A question that flew into my mind a couple of days ago. Why do I RP? Why do others RP? We get pretty much nothing from it. Do others read your stories? Do you want others to read your stories? Why RP if they don't read it?
Do you like it when others praise your posts? Do you flaunt your posts whenever you've added one?
What caused you to start (and continue) to roleplay? Not just here, but on any roleplaying forum.

I'm a man of fewer interests than most... Video games, writing, reading, and fighting... and those are about it... So why not blend it all together into an amalgamation of pure awesome...?
RPing lets me do that...
I couldn't care less about the opinions of others and the like; as long as I'm entertained by the action brought into being with these RPs, none of that other stuff really matters...

B: I can finnally have some story to those little "side missions" that I make up for myself in the games I play (For example, I will activate cheat modes in an RTS so I can make my own "save teh squad under distress" mission.)

Ehhh, I'm aware that nobody really reads my crap. At least, when it's in a non-event situation. But hey, it's fun, and I'd probably be off smoking a joint somewhere if I didn't have something like roleplaying to occupy my time.

I'd say a big reason for me is for fun and entertainment. I love interacting with characters I wouldn't otherwise meet and many I'd never even dream of. Being able to wage war against good or evil as I see fit is awesome in its own way.
And, it reminds me a lot of when I played pretend as a kid. Before I used sticks as swords, now I get to use words.

In order, I do it out of boredom, I do it to improve something, I do it for fun.
I care if other people read my posts, it's nice when they do, and without it I'd lose an audience, but ultimately, it's for self-satisfaction.
Yes, I like it when I get praise. It should be a natural feeling, getting priase for your work. And when I get praise, I don't flaunt it. Sure, I gloat at the scene for a bit, but I don't hang it on my wall as a trophy.

Because it's fun simply...
I started about six years ago hearing about Roleplaying on Yahoo Chat, and did a Sonic RP mostly. I had start with small replies and went onto Kingdom Hearts Roleplay Forum or KHRPF which has been, and still is, one of the biggest Roleplay forums and longest active. I had roleplayed on a small scale, and by a small scale I meant a three para limit that I had became attatched to and over time I adapted to it. I hated reading and writing, but when it came to Roleplay, it felt good because it was like living another life full of surprises and anything could happen, where as Real Life is just dull and boring.
I love to roleplay and let my imagination run wild, plus I like to read other people's posts to see just how creative they'll be or perhaps see how they'll surprise me with a sudden twist (So don't worry EN someone's listening) and now unlike years ago, I love English and Reading more than I perhaps loved math and science which I was naturally good in, so in general roleplay gives me interest in something I never would've had and kind of completed me. ^^

I do it because it let's me just do whatever the crap I want to do in a different place. It also lets me see what others have as far as ideas go, and that gives me a better understanding of them.

I love writing, period. I want my career to have something to do with it. RE:RN is the best way to practice that I can think of; if you look, I've improved noticeably since last year.

Well, it started on Tenku no Rakuen. Then I progressed to GU, then to here. Also, a few months ago, I realized just how much I love to write.
In a nutshell, writing is like mental masturbation for me. It makes me proud of myself, it makes me happy, and it's very rewarding watching the zenny, chips, and various sigs/upgrades stock up.
I love writing, period. I want my career to have something to do with it. RE:RN is the best way to practice that I can think of; if you look, I've improved noticeably since last year.

Mostly because I love writing and gaming, and this is a mix of both.
Usually I don't care if others read my posts, unless they're REALLY good. It's mostly self-indulgence.

Well, I roleplay because I discovered this innate interest (thanks to one of my friends) that I LOVE to write, creatively. Roleplaying gives me a fabulous chance at that area and I get to meet a lot of people on the forums too. Even if people don't read my work, or I have bad days, I think I still try my best because if you're a writer, you just have to keep on moving forward.

I roleplay because I can. I've got a bit of writing talent, so dammit, why don't I use it? English assignments that I'm allowed to go nuts on are few and far in between, and I need some way to just keep writing.
That, and the community here is awesome and (relatively) noob-free, so I don't really have to worry about them.

Heh, I cant near F's in English, mainly because I can never decide what to write. Especially on assignments Im allowed to "go nuts on". If someone took out two pieces of paper and told me I had to copy one or the other, it would take two days for me to find out which one to pick. And thats when I have only two choices, and I dont have to come up with writing the paper itself (I cant write a full paper until I have the full paper in my head before I put anything down. Even putting me name on my paper slows me down).
RPing isn't like that for me, I can come up with things far past what Im putting down as I write it, instead of the "four days of being stuck on the second paragraph after the teacher nearly sent me to the office for not working AGAIN".

Hmm... I guess I do it because I enjoy experimenting with personality types that I wouldn't get a chance to use otherwise. I like getting into people's heads, and RPing is a good chance to do that. Plus, like Phoenix said, school writing assignments are usually so stifling.

I used to write for the purely selfish reason of receiving praise. I used to love it when people would comment on my stuff and say how good I was. But now...Meh, it's mostly out of boredom. Very few people read my stuff and it isn't all that good, so...I mostly write out of boredom. I like to show off my posts when they are especially crappy.

I use RP as a creative outlet. My drawing skills are much to be desired and I don't play any instruments. I do sing, but my biggest fan is my shower curtain. Plus whenever I see something out of the ordinary like a sci-fi movie or a video game, I always daydream about being in that 'world.' RERN allows me to partially enter the world of NetOperators and NetNavis in the Rockman.EXE universe.
