In Her Element

"Hey, Scar?"
"Mm?"
"What made you take up AI programming? It seems really-- I don't know, farfetched from someone with your job."

As Luke and Scarlet watched Scarlet's girls trek through the Okuden underground tunnels, the former posed a question. Scarlet waved her legs around as she pondered the answer. "I don't know, I guess it was just something to do. It's always fascinated me how AI runs the world for us now, essentially. It's replaced a lot of menial jobs, and yet most people don't know anything about how it works. Heck, I don't think the inventor knew how it worked. And it was fun, you know? Talking to everyone on the AI channel, learning and trying out all this cool stuff, making new friends. Like Hira, Raikiri, Cheese, Spotty... These two girls are my best friends now, though it's hard to say that to their faces."

Then, leaning her head onto Luke's shoulder, she continued, "... of course, I'm not leaving out this silly Electopian either, that calls himself ex-Shadow-underscore-259."

At the sound of the unnecessarily drawn out online handle, Scarlet felt the man next to her shiver. "Ugh, don't say the whole thing out loud AND lean on me, I can't tell if you're trying to seduce me or embarrass me to death."

---

Back in the tunnels, Terra surreptitiously lowered the volume on the audio link that had been left on, her face as red as a tomato. Luckily for her, Carbide hadn't seen or heard the sappy exchange, as she had sprinted ahead with her rocky buckler held at the ready, seemingly acting as a vanguard. Of course, Terra was also scouting the area with her tremor senses, but Carbide's enthusiasm was much more appreciated. It was hard to keep the "scent" of the beast out of her thought processes, however, so apart from keeping up with her operator's flirty antics and basic awareness, she didn't have much else on her mind. It didn't quite occur to her that the tunnels she was walking through seemed oddly diminutive compared to the behemoth she had witnessed earlier. It didn't take long for the area to widen up a bit more, however, in the form of a cavern.

"Oh hey, they've got some pools down here! Neat!"

As she entered the clearing, Terra's senses quickly picked up a presence, and she picked up the pace to keep up with Carbide's inquisitive exploration. "... Scarlet, the shield and the dragon, please," said Terra, anticipating a skirmish.

"You got it," responded Scarlet, though it seemed as if her voice was slightly quieter.

However, the two girls both halted in their tracks when they heard the rumbling movement from across the cavern. An enormous monster truck flanked by knights in green armor raised at least one eyebrow in the room. The three reacted shortly after the two had stopped walking, only to be accompanied by the rambunctious entry of two enormous jellyfish monsters, which apparently had a taste for flying fish. Fortunately(?), one of the Fishy seemed to have escaped, but was also heading in a beeline right for them!

"Finally, some action!" exclaimed Carbide, as she lifted her shield and leapt in front of Terra, attempting to intercept the attack. As she did so, she felt the ground beneath her rise up and collect around her torso and free arm, forming some heavy armor as well as an impressively tall tower shield, different from her own original buckler. "W-Whoa! Sweet! Thanks!" she said, augmenting the tower shield's integrity with her own strength, and preparing herself to take on a few hits. Behind her, the hum of a near-transparent jade-colored barrier indicated that Terra was also ready.

"... I'll be counting on you, then, Carbide."

Widening her stance, she spread out her arms and gathered some energy in her hands, causing them to glow brightly with a green shine. The ground about her trembled lightly as a faint roar echoed from her body. Terra focused intently on the mossy path in front of her, and the viruses on it. Then, without hesitation, she thrust her hands forward, summoning a dragon as a projection of light. The dragon roared again, this time more audibly as it darted forward between the two pools, eager to ravage anything in its path with impunity, while its summoner looked about warily, to see if any of her adversaries had any surprise flanks prepared.

With the enthusiasm of a child let out to play, Carbide was quick to take the fore and ready her defences in the protection of her navi, creating a surprisingly staunch roadblock on the stretch of ground that ran between the deep pools. She met the fleeing fishy head on, deflecting its fleeing charge with her shield easily and making it that much easier for Terra herself to avoid. A fresher, stronger shield replaced it as she faced down the tank and its escort, but good instincts pulled her back to cover Terra more closely, just as the two jellyfish creatures on either side pointed their tentacly appendages towards the navi and released streams of watery bubbles that burst and scattered in every direction as they struck... Carbide's shield.

Despite her quick reactions, however, the defence took a hammering and in a series of rapid-fire blasts it was beaten through. The onslaught of swift attacks began to chip away at Carbide's protective armour as well, but just as it gave out, the two meta-viruses seemed to run out of bubbles, at least for now. Instead, they paused, dexterous appendages waving in the air, then began to look as though they were drawing themselves up in the water instead.

In the gap, the metool in the comical tank waved its gun turret briefly, pointing it towards the ceiling two swordies of the cave. It seemed strange, but if Terra was paying particular note, she might realise that there were a pair of long metal tines extended from the top and bottom of the long muzzle, making extended barrel look almost like a giant version of a metool's pick-axe. Sure enough, the barrel slammed down again a moment later, driving the lower tine into the ground and sending a broad, earth-tearing shock wave forward across the ground. The metool 'Meep'ed happily at this, and seemed quite proud, but despite the relatively narrow space and lack of anywhere to really go, the shock wave itself managed to pass by Terra and Carbide both, without striking either of them. The metool didn't actually seem to notice this fact. It was just waving the gun turret up and down a little more, quite content.

Just after the wave had passed, the two swordies warped forward, appearing on either side of Terra and Carbide, and swinging their swords in unison. Both of them were a little bit off in their synchronised swinging, though; the first managed to clip Carbide, but not Terra, while the second struck Terra, but missed Carbide. Carbide had to take the grazing cut directly, out of other defences as she was for now; the blow scored its way across her shoulder and collarbone. Terra was spared this, as her protective barrier not only stopped the strike, but also reduced its power significantly in the process.

Her next action was to release her ground-altering dragon, but it came out seemingly a little confused at the unusual terrain, weaving and exploring briefly as it went on its way; there were a number of targets it might have hit, but it miraculously seemed to avoid all of them except for the metool on its tank. when it saw the dragon rushing towards it, the virus gave another, much ore startled 'Meep!' and made as though to duck down. What actually happened, was that its helmet expanded to gigantic size, growing to cover the entire tank instead, and creating a protective dome. this, of course, didn't actually stop the ground-bound dragon from ducking into the earth and damaging the tank virus anyway, as it passed underneath. The Mettank remained hidden, cowering under its giant metool helmet.

Just as the dragon had finished running its course and turned a good deal of the terrain, and even some to the edges of the pools, into fresh grass, the two giant jellyfish seemed to exhale again, and with the thumping sound of expelled water, the cavern suddenly flooded. the first wave came from the left, washing over everything and covering the ground in a foot of water; all of the other viruses, with the exception of the pale fishy, were buffeted by the onrushing flood and thrown about, but Carbide and Terra didn't escape the great wave either. Terra's barrier collapsed and carbide would have struggled to keep her feet and stop from swallowing water as it washed over. A moment after, however, a second thump sent and even grater wave back the other way, further flooding the low-ceilinged cave with an even stronger backwash of dark water. This deep underground, it was freezing cold and a dark, inscrutable black. some of the viruses were more prepared for the second wash and didn't get hurt by it; Carbide escaped further harm from the second flood, but Terra herself wasn't so fortunate, taking the brunt of the wave to her chest and face. Apparently the two meta-jellies were done toying with their food and just wanted to drown them all and be done. Another worrisome detail that Terra might now be aware of, if she examined them; the two had encased themselves in a protective covering of mist and bubbles, and it looked like a worrisomely thick shell. The ground was now solidly under at least a foot and a half of water, and everyone in the cave was thoroughly soaked, and probably cold as well.

"Grhk!! Pffff! Ugh!"

Coughing out some water that she had accidentally choked down, Carbide reeled as she reinstated her shield and raised it up against the two giant jellyfish in front of her. Having been nearly drowned in the dark, claustrophobic cave might have broken other spirits, or perhaps rooted them in fear of being buried. However, Carbide's eyes still lit up with an energetic flame as she bellowed out to the two enormous monsters. "That all you've got?! Can't even knock me down?!" she yelled. Of course, it might have been little more than a bluff; a burst of rebellion against her visibly shaking legs.

"Scarlet, Moonblade."

Suddenly, behind Carbide, a crackle of activity echoed out, with the sound of rushing water powerfully making a statement to their adversaries. Carbide didn't have enough time to turn around before she felt herself being hoisted onto Terra's shoulder like a sack of rice. "W-Whoa!" exclaimed Carbide, as she adjusted her position slightly. Looking up, she stared at the Fishy that had sped past both of them, and her peripheral vision was filled with the sight of gleaming green blades and armor. Before them, however, stood a dim blue light, indicating the water-elemental barrier that Terra had erected to protect them. Nevertheless, Carbide still raised her shield, trying to catch any attacks that the viruses would have had to flank them with.

"... Recover and RemotePlug as well, please."

Terra stuck out her foot, tracing out a circle with the tip of her boot. Almost as if tracing her movement, the ground around her rumbled and shook, before a sharp metallic ring rose from the ground and swiveled in place around her. Like a deadly guillotine, it swung about Terra's position, cutting down any of the unlucky viral trio that happened to still be around her. The ring then fell back into the water with a splash as Terra kicked off.

A dim green glow bathed Terra's body with restorative energy as the knee-deep water continued to swirl about her. Then, she abruptly stopped, and a brief crackle of electricity arced from Terra's forehead, before balling up into a tiny, energetic sprite. The golden ball of energy erratically sprung about before hurtling itself directly at one of the Tsunami. Contrary to its diminutive size, however, an extremely thunderous crackle echoed out from its pursuit, belying its true strength.

With the water level suddenly flooding the floor and rising, Terra secured the safety of her SP with a quick scoop a she refreshed and restored her other defences, giving Carbide the perfect position from which to catch things with her shield. It also gave her an excellent view of the way Terra's lightning quick sword-work sliced apart the trio of viruses surrounding her with an efficiency that gave them no time to react or respond at all.

The larger meta-viruses were more of a problem, however, and their attentions were now focused entirely on Terra as the most important threat. Well, the Tsunamis were, at least. The Mettank was still hidden under its dome, but the sound of crashing waves appeared to have piqued its curiosity, as the giant helmet receded a moment late,r returning to its normal size and position on the metool-driver's head. this, of cours,e let the water in, and it gave an alarmed 'meep', beginning to panic as its tank was inundated. Despite the little guy's worrying, however, the water didn't actually seem to hinder the vehicle at all. While he panicked, the turret of the machine waved around, and then launched an explosive, stunning shell. It launched it more or less directly at the ceiling, being at a high elevation when it fired, and all that happened was a deep rumble in the cave system, and the falling of several large chunks of rock into the water below, and nothing more. Even so, the diminutive pilot flinched away from this, looking more than a little sheepish.

Less flustered, the two jelly creatures were mostly focused on Terra and her partner, and one of them rose up to create another swelling wave as it attempted to flood the cave further. Terra was able to avoid the worse of the wave crash, and it didn't seem to affect the tank this time, but the water level only rose a short way. If carbide had still been on the ground, she'd probably be treading water by now, but Terra herself was still able to stand, and it didn't look as though they would be able to flood the cavern much further than that.

The other one pointed both of its primary tentacles out towards Terra and launched a rapid series of watery bubble attacks. Carbide was ready, leaning out from her perch to get her shield in the way for Terra, but she might have been a touch over-zealous in the defence, given her own condition; the first two bubble shots struck her shield, and it crumpled, but while one of the remaining two drifted wide, the other caught Carbide with a splash as she defended her navi.

Terra had a good answer to the over-sized jellies, however, and after taking a moment to heal herself, sent a deceptively powerful spark of electricity towards one of them. It didn't look like much, but as the spark crackled through the creature's watery aura, the current spread and amplified, arcing back and forth through the water at what looked like an exponential swell. The creature reared back, writhing and twitching as sparks covered it and lanced through its body, then fell back with a splash, deflating and spreading out as it began to dissolve into the water.

Momentarily distracted by her potent counter, Terra didn't quite catch what was happening at the other end of the cavern, however. The Mettank had been revving its engine, and pointing itself towards Terra carefully. Suddenly, with a short viral shriek that might have been anything from excitement to terror, the tank shot forward. As it began to move, the metool ducked, and its helmet spread out again, covering the entire tank in what was now a dangerously mobile dome. There was absolutely no way it could see where it was going while the dome was down like that, but it had lined up before hand and rocketed along its trajectory to crash into Terra with a great deal of force. Her barrier caught the blow, however, and with a little bit of help from Carbide, it managed to hold itself together, just barely. Just past her, the tank stopped and the dome receded again, leaving a very dizzy looking metool, swaying slightly in its seat.

The remaining Tsunamia wasn't interested in these shenanigans, and proceeded to send another series of water blasts in Terra's direction. the bursts were quite accurate as they struck her one after another, but the elementally aligned nature of her defences kept the damage to a minimum. Her barrier failed after the first hit, but the casing soaked up the remaining three with integrity to spare.

Having taken a blow from her earlier attempt at defending Terra, Carbide recoiled back slightly, reforming the shield on her arm. Though she wanted to be useful, she had overstepped her boundaries and paid the price as such. "It's alright, Terra, you can let me down now," said Carbide. With the bit of energy that she had left, she semi-vaulted over Terra's shoulder, ending up in the water behind Terra. As soon as she touched down, she heard the sound of water rushing about her, and saw that some of the water had crept up to her body to protect her from harm. In front of her, she saw Terra's sturdy back being quickly enveloped by the protective blue light once again.

"Thanks, Terra."

"... You can watch my back," said Terra, as the water around her swirled about even more violently. "... Scarlet, I'd like the Rages, and the DoubleShot."

Scarlet obliged quickly with her Navi's chip requests, adding, "Looks like you're wrapping it up. Do I send in the Bandcoon?"
"... Is that appropriate right now?"
"I'm sure it can swim," pitched in Luke with a chuckle.

Terra could only shake her head subtly for a moment, before her chips arrived, and she activated one of them immediately. Before her, the eyepatch-wearing Bandcoon materialized in the water, this time with a scuba mask and flippers, though there didn't seem to be any appropriate oxygen cylinders on its back. It nodded briefly before diving into the knee-deep water, headed towards its target of the titanic tentacled threat. Terra then raised her foot, and stomped it onto the flooded floor. As if mimicking some prophetic moment, the floodwaters parted before her, cutting through the water and opening up into a widening aperture behind her, including where Carbide had dismounted. The ground that was revealed, however, was not the mossy ground that had been there before, but a dry metal floor.

"... Let's go, Carbide," said Terra.
"I'm on it!"

As if on cue, the metal floor started to glow brightly as Terra and Carbide both lowered their stances and brought their hands to the side. Bright blue sparks began to flow from the floor to the girls' bodies, traveling up their legs and gathering in their hands. Static filled the air as the girls prepared their attacks, before releasing twin bolts of lightning in tandem, with Terra's attack leading Carbide's.

As the rapid discharge cooled down from Carbide's end, Terra wasn't quite done just yet. Behind her, the gleaming panels warped and pulsed, before two bright yellow orbs popped up from them. The orbs shook about with vigor before rocketing forward towards the jellyfish monster for the second round of fire. With all of the electrical forces being unleashed, Terra could smell the distinct ozone in the air as she surveyed the fruits of her assault on her remaining enemies.

With their foes dramatically reduced in number, it was only a matter of dealing with the two large foes that remained. Carbide was done being a carried weight for now, but Terra wasn't about to let her go off without any extra protection. As they split up, however, the nearby Mettank turned in place, the dizzy little metool pilot shaking its head and clearing its eyes. Despite all sensibilities to the contrary, it decided that the whole helmeted ramming thing was worth another go, and revved the tank's engines again, before bull-rushing back the way it had come with its helmet lowered over the tank again, effectively blinding it. As it turned out, this didn't really go very well the second time around either, and it passed back up the raised section of land between Terra and carbide without hitting either of them, and only succeeding in throwing great waves of water to either side in its wake. the vehicle, helm included, seemed to spin around a few times towards the end on its dash, and when the MetGuard receded again, it was to reveal a metool even more disoriented than before.

Terra, after watching the out of control vehicle shoot by, raised up the central bridge from the water again, this time covered in strong, solid metal, but the Tsunami responded almost immediately with an angry sound and another great thump of rushing water. the crashing wave washed around them, but it only managed to wear down Terra's defences, while Carbide escaped completely unscathed. Less fortunate was the other meta-virus, whose monster-tank rocked badly as the wave washed over it. More to the dismay of the giant jelly virus, however, was the fact that the land touched by Terra's transformative energy was remarkably resilient to the attempted change; the water sloughed off and away again, leaving the metal panelling in place.

This was just what she needed to take full advantage of the jelly's crippling weakness to electricity, however, and the two bolts of energy that lanced forward from the girls both connected with a zap fierce enough to fry the virus where it swam and delete it for good. At the other end of the field, the Mettank tried again, and failed again, to launch another of its stunning shells towards Terra and Carbide; it would be hard for Terra to later assess what sort of threat the strange meta-virus posed, since it seemed to be so universally ineffective at doing anything. in its dizzy state, this bomb launched off into the open water far to the side of the girls, and detonated with a small thump and ringing sound, well underneath the water's surface.

Terra was more accurate, and with the Jelly taken care of by the first two electrical blasts, she was able to send the next two bolts of energy towards the only remaining foe instead. Stripped of her terraforming protection already, it did leave a couple of nasty holes in the terrain nearby, but the twin strikes did their work and bashed into the monster tank with a satisfying crackle. It smoked and steamed, then one of the wheels popped off and rolled into the water, while the tank tilted, then collapsed with a crunch. The little metool on top seemed quite distressed by this development, and jumped off onto another part of the tank, tyring to furiously fan at it and run some kind of damage control. Somewhere off to the side, the snorkelling bandcoon splashed back to the surface, unharmed. It was carrying something with it, but at this point it was hard to see exactly what.

"... Phew," exhaled Terra, as she surveyed the state of the battle from atop the metallic bridge. Confirming that the jellyfish monster had been well and truly defeated, the tension in her body released itself all at once. She did notice the busted Mettank at the edge of the field, but since it had been largely ineffective at doing anything to them besides a few failed bull rush attacks, she paid it no mind.

"Nice one." "Really good work, Terra. Get ready to head back."

With the audio link opening up, and near-synchronized compliments arriving from Luke and Scarlet respectively, Terra seemed to glow, as she welcomed the arrival of the earlier Bandcoon that she had sent out. It shook off the water happily as it nuzzled up to Terra's foot, clearly eager to show off its spoils. The Navi was more than happy to oblige its need for acknowledgement, and crouched next to it to give it a few congratulatory pats. However, Carbide seemed a bit concerned about something else entirely.

"What about that last one, Terra?" she asked, pointing towards the defunct tank. Terra watched the distraught Metool attempt to fix its trashed ride by jumping around and fanning it at various places, and shrugged.

"... Leave it be," the Navi said, turning back her attention to examine what the Bandcoon had brought her.

"Aw, that's no fun," said Carbide, as she puffed up her cheeks. Disengaging her shield, she watched the little Metool hop around in a panic, and idly kicked a stray piece of rubble towards it. She had no real intention of attacking it, but having just endured a high pressure water jet's worth of attacks, her concentration was slightly off as she put in a bit too much power into her kick. "O-Oh, crap," she said, watching the rubble sail through the air as her Navi obliviously had her back turned.

With the battle concluded, Terra turned to look at her returned friend, receiving a gift from the little guy in the form of what looked like a very large, very valuable pearl. It was probably worth about 700 zenny, and would convert as such if she wished. there were other spoils of battle to claim along the way, including a large amount of other zenny, and, amongst the drifting flotsam left over form the battle, a chip that Terra might consider herself lucky to have recovered from the the remains of the large jellies.

Unseen by her navi, carbide vented some of her excess frustration, kicking a stone with far more force than she probably intended. Down the way, the small metool looked as though it was about to slip off its helmet to better fan at one of the open engine ports on the body of the tank, but before it could take it all the way off, the rock that Carbide had kicked struck the mostly defenceless virus square in the back of the head, and it toppled into the mechanism with a startled 'Mee—!' which promptly cut off amidst the sounds of some sparks and an uncomfortable-sounding crunch of machinery. Not his lucky day at all, it would seem.

"?"

Having just retrieved the large pearl from the Bandcoon, Terra jumped slightly at the unpleasant sounds of machinery crashing. Turning her gaze, she found a pale-faced Carbide, whose limbs seemed to have been frozen as she stared at the wreckage of the Metool-piloted tank. "Carbide?" she asked, causing the diminutive girl to leap up in a panic. Waving her hands about frantically, she began to rattle off sentences in rapidfire. "I-It's not my fault I didn't mean to hit it I just kicked this piece of rubble but I didn't want to actually hit it I just figured I'd kick it into the water or something!"

Terra's brow furrowed slightly. "... Well, alright, as long as you're okay. I'd like to take a rest now for the moment, so let's go," said Terra.

Carbide's panicking abruptly came to a halt. "O-Oh, um, okay."

At the same time, Terra lifted the pearl into the air, and allowed it to disappear as it was transferred into the PET. "... I'd like to start the Bookmark here. Is that all right, Scarlet?"

"Well, it looks like a decent area. Sure, I'm sending it down," said Scarlet. A short moment later, a beam of light streamed down onto the metal platform, and the panel that the light had shone on warped into something that looked similar to the transfer pads that brought them here. Motioning Carbide to step onto the panel with her, Terra and her partner thus blinked out of sight, taking the beam of light with them and leaving no trace of their presence behind, save for a dim circular mark on the metal floor.

The Bookmark marker glowed briefly for a moment once more, before withering away as it formed a small telepad. Through the telepad, Terra and Carbide stepped through, before the telepad vanished, and they were back where they were before.

"Alright, keep going, but keep an eye out, something tells me that this place is bound to have one or two big ones lurking around."

"You got it!" said Carbide cheerfully, while Terra stayed silent, scouting about the area before proceeding cautiously.

[Bookmark Used! Battle 15 - Ready.]
[Terra.EXE: 170 HP, Carbide.SP: 70 HP.]
Returning to the deep depths of Okuden, Terra and Carbide would probably welcome the cooling sensation of being deep in the earth, after their recent, much hotter adventures. The passageway they'd left from had quieted in the time since their departure, and seemed mostly calm now. Only the occasional sounds of large creatures scuttling deep beneath the ground in tunnels of their own could be heard, muffled through the rock and earthen walls, while the pools to either side of them were deathly still, revealing only blankness in the depths of the underground lake below.

Once she managed to get her bearings and head forward, Terra would find the tunnel sloping slightly down and curving to the right a little, before beginning to split up into a delta of false tunnel branches that all looked through to each other through gaps in the walls. Picking their way through didn't take too long, unless either of them felt like stopping to look more at the glowing subterranean plants that luminescent on the walls and ceilings in scattered patterns. Most of them glowed with bluish hues, and comprised primarily of mosses and fungal shapes.

Before long, the walls separating the tunnel delta thinned and degraded more, until they were in an uneven but progressing cavern riddled with individual columns of rock that supported the ceiling about fifteen feet above them. And then, a light source — a proper one, beyond the glowing plants.

It was coming from off to their left somewhere, and creeping closer would lead the pair to what seemed like a more pointed side passage from which the light glowed a warm yellow. As they got closes, the sounds of mechanical movements and sparking electronics filtered through the air, as well as voices.

"That's a bit better, yes..." a female voice, smooth and mature, but still sounding quite young. No readily discernible accent to it, but it sounded tired, more than anything. "What I do not understand is why it left us..." More electronic sounds as some kind of intricate work was presumably done, before another voice answered, this one a similar-sounding male.

"I'll let you contemplate the tides of fate, sister dearest... Leaving us alive was its own mistake. In survival we adapt, and we recover. It might have destroyed us, but it left, like it had lost interest, and now we repair, and we improve. Ah! Yes, ah, that's much better. I've no idea what it was, but it certainly wasn't our mark." Like the first, this voice sounded weary, but there was also a hint of both concern, and determination in it.

"No, my love, and this set back will slow us down... It will take time before we are fully recovered."
"Time, yes. But not too long. We rest for now, and repair ourselves. Once we are at full strength again, then we will pick up the trail. We will adapt to adversity, my dear; it is who we are."
"Of course, Brother. Fate will guide use on the path, and with luck and care, our mark will be deleted before he has a chance to pass on his information. I amuse myself wondering how this one's data will taste... so noble a figure, after all."
"Focus, my love... Now how is your arm... Let me just..."

The voices continued, talking quietly and jumping between some kind of assassination contract, the repairs they were apparently doing on each other, and concern for whatever it was that had apparently nearly killed them, before wandering away. Terra and Carbide could stay and listen for a little while longer, perhaps, but if they hesitated out of sight for too long, they'd hear a small, sharp intake of breath from both of the voices at once.

"Someone is out there... in the caves, that way..." The voices were more hushed now.
"I'm not reading any other viruses nearby. Who else would be down this deep?"
"Shh..." The sound of mechanical and electronic repairs fell silent.

-=Battle 15, Begin=-

"There's a lot less viruses here than before," commented Scarlet.

"Yeah, though it's a lot more of a maze now... Like a big spider web. Kind of feels like we could get lost at any time. It's a good thing we have Terra, though!" said Carbide, looking over to Terra, who only responded with a smile. As the area opened up a bit more, with the walls degrading to reduce all the interlocking branches into one enormous cavern, Carbide was the first to notice the artificial light coming up ahead. "Hey, what's over there? I think someone's down here with us," she said, running over to where the sound was coming from.

Terra reached out to attempt to catch her by the shoulder, but the little girl was already far gone, hiding against a wall as she listened in on a conversation. The Navi sighed as she joined in, though whatever was being discussed didn't seem to have anything to do with them. She began turning around to continue on her trail when suddenly, Carbide peeked around the corner through the passage. "Hello? Anyone home?" she said.
Irrepressible as ever, Carbide was quick to begin eaves-dropping on the voices, and then peeking in just as Terra was about to move on. In the small girl's defence, it sounded like the pair had already been alerted anyway, and it was the female voice that called back first as the SP announced herself.

"Hello there little one... you can come into the light if you want, don't be worried. You aren't down here all on your own are you?" The sounds of mechanical work and crackling electronics started up again, as though the two had relaxed and returned to whatever they were doing. what Carbide would see, if she peeked into the tunnel, was that the space itself terminated in more of a cul-de-sac than an actual branch, and the beings settled inside were very out of place for the surroundings they were in.

The floor of the immediate circular area had been converted to metal panelling, which was busily popping open in places with various probes and tools as they were reached for by either of the two entities in the middle of it. If one started looking at them from the head down, they looked mostly like a pair of highly humanised androids. Well, one android and one gynoid, to be more specific. The male had metallic steel blue hair that lay back neatly and fell to his shoulders, with smooth skin in a chromatic silver and bright yellow eyes. He had even, well proportioned features; one might say his face was accented to stretch beyond merely handsome and into gosh-darn pretty territory. Below that, his form continued with a lean, toned build, obviously metallic, judging form his skin, but it moved and flexed in the same way one would expect organic skin to. He was without any kind of shirt, and the definition of his chest and abdominal area was visible, but refined and delicate; he seemed to have some of the normal humanoid features, but lacked others; clearly he had small nipples on his chest, but didn't appear to have any kind of navel, for example.

His 'sister', if the words they used were true, was alongside him and had hair of a similar colour that fell about twice as far, to about her mid back. Also like her brother, she had smooth metallic skin, beautiful, toned features, and radiant yellow eyes. Slightly more embarrassing for those who were prudishly inclined, she also matched her brother for the lack of a shirt, and while bare breasts might not be an issue on a less detailed being, hers had what couldn't really be mistaken for anything other than fully detailed nipples, and they seemed to move with a realistic amount of weight and softness. that said, she was only endowed to a point that matched her overall lithe figure, and whenever she shifted they behaved as though there was a sufficient amount of support restraining them from excessive pulling or jiggling, even though none was visible.

Below the waist, things got a little more complicated; a large mass of mechanical cables, probes and other machinery formed something of a nest about them, obscuring them from the waist down. It seemed fluid and amorphous, shifting as needed around the two, and at times as they worked, and their bodies came apart, it seemed to at least partially split between them, though it never quite disconnected. In flickers between the machinery, Carbide, and Terra if she approached, would catch glimpses of the rest of their bodies; as much as they couldn't' really be seen, it looked as though they both possessed full bodies for their lower halves as well, with the usual limb arrangement; it was simply that the mass of extra mechanical and electrical construct continuously obscured them.

The other most notable feature was that the pair looked badly damage,d as though they'd recently been in a fight. Crushed and dented parts of their bodies had been peeled open or parts removed while intricate electronics were worked on; the damaged bits were either being repaired, or had been subsumed by the storm of machinery below. The twins were working on each other with a smooth efficiency that spoke of an absolutely knowledge of what the other was doing, and where they were at all times; they were partially entwined with one another, the female with one arm about her brother behind him and the finger tips of her other hand working on some part of his neck, while he lay his head back and to the side for her, even as his own hands and an additional small cable probe tinkered delicately on the very arm that she was using to work on him.

"Oh, I see... you are a support program! Tell me, small one, is your navigator nearby? They must be very powerful to be adventuring down this deep..." This was the male speaking, though, like his sister, they both sounded calmly self-assured, like one might talk to a child or a pet.

The female finished whatever she was doing with his neck, then turned to face the way that Carbide and Terra would need to come from, looking at each of them briefly if they had indeed stepped out. she turned her back next and reclined; the nest of machinery and electronics shifted to support and cradle her as she pushed back and lifted one leg up out of the mass, setting the foot against the male's shoulder. she smiled in what might have been a reassuring manner, her face upside down and her hair spilling out onto the ground as her twin started repairing some part of her exposed upper thigh next; her right arm rested its elbow on the edge of the mechanical nest in a lounging position, but her left kept working busily at something below the visual edge of the mass.

"Really, tell us all about yourselves and what makes you strong... We'd love to hear your stories! - Ah! That's good, but not quite... still fluctuating... do that part over, brother..." Her eyes flicked closed briefly as she spoke the part directed to her twin, rather than at Terra and Carbide. The pair seemed to be acting friendly, but there was something just a little bit off-putting about their words, even if one was comfortable looking past their appearance and behaviour. There was also the consideration, if this risked turning hostile, that the pair were repairing themselves every moment that they kept talking. Oh, and also the bit where they'd been talking about assassination and what their targets' data tasted like, too... so the question of how friendly they actually were was heavily debatable.

Discovering what was beyond the corner, Carbide's eyes widened as she drank in the spectacle laid out before her. Having only been exposed to a relatively low number of human figures-- that is, three in total, the starkly divergent robotic figures before her seemed both terribly beautiful and terribly unsettling. With the way their refined metallic bodies shifted about in telegraphed movements, it was hard for her to decide whether she was aroused or terrified. One thing was for sure, though, she was hard at work etching all of their curves and features into her mind, trying to eke out important details, like estimating how large the female's bust was, and how well-chiseled the male's bodice was, and how smooth and pliable their features appeared to be, despite the metallic appearance.

At some point, she realized that they were talking to her. She tried to reply to their inquiries, but her voice caught in her throat. As much as her fascination nagged at her to approach them, as they were beckoning her to, the uncanniness of their appearance and the way they talked tore at her screaming instincts. Even so, she realized how hot her face felt, as she stammered out a flushed "U-Um..."

Suddenly, she felt a firm hand on her shoulder. Though she didn't need to turn to see who it was, Carbide raised her head anyway, to see Terra's resolute, calm face. In a way, it almost felt eerily similar to the unsettling nature of the robot siblings' expressions. However, Terra's expression changed subtly, with a small hint of a smile appearing at the very ends. That, and the warmth of her Navi's hand on her shoulder convinced Carbide otherwise, and a feeling of security came over her instead.

"... I apologize for intruding on your repairs. I'm the one responsible for this little girl," stated Terra. "We came down here in search of a large, possibly abnormal creature that we stumbled on in our exploration. It was mostly made of plants and earth, and had a somewhat undefined form, though it did have something resembling a head, with a pair of very large eye-like emeralds. Have you come across it, by any chance? It isn't in any way urgent, so we may exchange some assistance in your current situation for any information that you might have. If not, then we're sorry to have taken up your time."

As she explained their presence there, Terra's senses were silently scouring the area, trying to see how large the enormous nest of machines that made up their lower bodies actually was.
As Terra stepped into view to join her flustered SP, the female smiled more broadly and rolled over in the mass of mechanisms. Her brother finished with whatever he was doing on her thigh and the leg slipped past in front of him with a languid grace as she turned. This left her propped up on her forearms, with the curves of her breasts visibly on show, and the smooth curve of her back showing all the way to her behind, as though she were kneeling.

"It's no intrusion, really... Hello! So nice to see such a sweet-looking girl! You must tell us all about yourself!" Her hips swayed slightly as she smiled, looking at Terra now, but stilled again when the male figure moved in behind her, pressing close so her could lean forward over her back and begin working on a damaged section just below her shoulder blade. He had to lean over and it was clear that his hips were in direct contact with her behind. The position was easily the most... questionable... one yet, while they repaired each other, but neither seemed to pay it any heed. After opening the damaged panel he pulled out a few pieces of broken tubing and selected a new, complete one from the mass of machinery. With a small smile he placed his other hand on the female's shoulder.

"Be still for a moment, sister... I'm just inserting it now..." Her eyes rolled up, unfocused for a few seconds as he fitted the part and the male looked up from what he was doing. "We were just saying to your adorable little support here, we'd be very interested to hear the stories of your strength and how you battled, coming down here, while we work. The company would be much appreciated..." As Terra explained more about the events of earlier ventures in these tunnels, the female blinked and refocused her vision, sighing in along, breathy way.

"Ohh... It sounds like you've seen the same beast that harmed us!" Her eyes flicked between Terra and Carbide for a moment. "What are your names, beautiful ladies? I am called Fortuna, and my brother here is Pronus. You must tell us everything!" Her hands reached out in an imploring, pleading gesture, that coincidentally squeezed her breasts together further. Pronus finished what he was doing to her back and stretched his arms.

"Yes indeed, did you fight with it? What can you tell us of its abilities? And yours? We are very curious..."

While they chatted, watching the way that the machine part and loose cables moved was at least somewhat informative; the nested mass was mobile and not, on the surface of appearance, connected to any greater or larger mass beneath. They had converted the area of terrain around them into an impromptu repair bay, true, but once the change was set up, it didn't seem connected to them at all. Further, from examining the way it shifted and moved, Terra was able to learn that the twins were indeed a complete and separate pair of entities with full bodies, but that the mass of mechanism that surrounded them was also a part of their twinned being and wouldn't come away from them completely.

She could guess that, though any scan or reading she took displayed the twins as a single entity, they were still individual bodies, and were capable of moving apart from each other if they chose to — what that would do for the machine nest was hard to guess for now. Chances were, if they were attacked in their present state, they would take damage as a single entity, but that might not be the case if assaulted while they were apart. This was as much as Terra had the opportunity to learn before the conversation had reached a point of waiting on her to respond to the twins' questions.

"... My name is Terra," said the Navi, gesturing with her head towards her SP to do the same.

"And I'm Carbide, Terra's support program! We're maaaadly in love!" exclaimed Carbide, receiving a prompt chop on the head after her last sentence. "Ow! W-Well, the last one is probably pending revisions-- Owww!" she continued, receiving another precise strike in the same spot for her troubles.

Terra continued, as Carbide rubbed her head with a bit of pained grimacing. "... In any case, we did not fight the beast. We only defended ourselves against a large spider, whose nest it was ravaging prior. Before that, we found a few mutant viruses that seemed to have amalgamated from a few others. They were tougher than most other viruses, so it was somewhat harrowing, but we managed to pull through and come further down here. Carbide has helped me quite a lot in these battles."

"Oh! Yeah! I can make shields! Look!" said Carbide, crouching down and flexing her arms with a powerful grunt. The grey spires on her arms burst out in two directions, expanding upwards about twice her height before stopping. The one on her right began to glow with a white light before it transmuted its material from rock into a smooth metal shield. Setting them down on the floor, the shields made quite an audible thump as she grinned proudly. "Oh! And Terra can... u-um... d-do a bunch of stuff! You show 'em, Terra," said Carbide, noticing that the sibling droids had moved into a rather questionable position. Blushing rather visibly, she awkwardly averted her gaze to Terra and gesturing with one of them towards the Navi. Sighing, Terra slowly bent down to touch the metal flooring at her feet, and made a motion of "scooping up" something from the floor.

-- Except that her fingers sank through the metal, rippling lightly through the metal as if it was made of liquid, and she easily scooped up a tiny "puddle" of shining metal in her hand. The liquid metal began to revolve in her palm as it coalesced into a little ball, which floated slowly into view above her palm. She lightly touched the ball with the tips of her fingers, allowing it to rotate within her hand as it morphed into a cube, and a cylinder, and a ball, and a prickly urchin, and a ball again. Then, she allowed it to float back down, and gently enclosed it within her hand again. Clenching her fist -- though no crushing sound was heard -- Terra then allowed the liquid metal to flow from between her fingers into the floor below, returning it to its original place as if nothing had happened.

Her previous embarrassment turned into awe as Carbide's jaw picked itself off the floor after a few seconds, enough for her to comment. "T-That was pretty cool, but I was thinking more of you changing the floor into something or showing off some cool sword attack," she said.

"... I wouldn't want to ruin this repair facility, Carbide," smiled Terra, almost matter-of-factly.

"-- Oh! Good point. I guess it's not exactly a good place to show off our cool attacks. Sorry, guys! These shields are awesome, too, though, right? Right?!" she said, brandishing the enormous tower shields as easily as if they were made of feathers.

// Summary
[Ca.1] Sig: Terraforce: Knight of Nature: (3+1)-Hit Shield + 3-Hit Planar Shield @ Self (Reinforce, Metal: Elec)
// Turn Splice: 5/5 Terra, 1/2 Carbide
As Carbide gave her own impression of her relationship with Terra, the metallic woman chuckled softly, smiling and reaching out from her nest of mechanisms to lightly tousle Carbide's hair with a smile. The action moved her chest forward off the edge of the other materials, and the sudden addition of extra gravity emphasised the softness and pliability of certain body parts, regardless of their apparently mechanical nature, though Carbide was really the main one getting the show. The pat and the grin, however, were probably more soothing and less fluster inducing, in contrast to the well intentioned little smacks she was getting from Terra.

While she spoke, the male twin watched her with a thoughtful expression. He'd finished doing... whatever it was he had been doing, behind his sister, and shifted around to address Terra more directly. This involved a slide of movement that spread the mass of mechanical detritus around their lower halves, until it had thinned out considerably to allow him to stand beside her while still being at least partially ensconced in it. Not completely enough, as it turned out, since now the swirling cushion of parts only came as high as he knees and no longer hid the fact that the waist region of his anatomy was far more 'correct' than his lack in other areas. It was a nice, well proportioned specimen, without being dramatic or focal in any way, but it wasn't likely that Terra was particularly interested in making a close observation. Pronus himself didn't appear self-conscious or even particularly aware of the normal standards of decency as he folded his arms and tilted his head to chat with Terra more.

"Some of the amalgamations that arise in the deeper nets can be quite a handful, yes. There are many that were made by the hands of humans, of course, but a surprising number that seem to have come together all on their own too. It's quite fascinating, don't you think? I'll say it's good to learn that you bested one of the hive queens that defile some of these lower reaches of Okuden with their nests. Nasty creatures indeed. Knowing that you killed one of them with just your own SP for help is very timely knowledge indeed. Did you hear, sister?" He glanced past her to where Fortuna had moved further and closer in, circling around to the far side and crouching low to talk more with Carbide; the twins were now on opposite sides of Terra and her Sp, and the nest of connecting material had stretched and curved to allow them to be that far apart without fully disconnecting. It looked as though they twins themselves could move apart freely, but that the technological mass would try hard to remain connected to both of them without fully separating.

"I heard, my love. Fate smiles, it seems." Fittingly, she was smiling as she spoke, her eyes darting up to her twin for a moment before coming back to Carbide. "That's a very useful skill, little one. you must be so much stronger than you seem to wield gear like that so easily! I'm sure Terra must think the world of you, and be very grateful of your help and support! Not to mention how adorably cute you are too! You look positively delicious!" Similar to her brother, their separation had caused the covering ward of mechanical bits and pieces to thin down enough that Carbide would be able to see more of the woman's form that just her exposed chest now — the smooth metallic skin of her body continued flawlessly down to well-appointed hips and a private region that lacked any kind of covering, clothing, hair or otherwise, but visibly maintained the kinds of biologically correct details one might expect to see in such a location. Also like her brother, she didn't seem bothered, or even particularly aware of her exposure.

It was about this time that Terra showcased one of her more interesting talents and the sight of it got a clear reaction from both the twins — Fortuna looked around to see in the same instant that Pronus watched Terra alter the ground with ease.

"Oh, I say... You're a ground-weaver! And a very skilled one, too, by the look of that control. That's exquisite, don't you think, my love?" He had pressed his hands together, smiling broadly in appreciation for the show.

"Oh yes, that will be most useful indeed, brother dear. That might be just what we need. I do so love it when the fates bless us!" Seemingly on instinct she reached out to give Carbide a quick hug that would squeeze the girl to her chest for a few moments before letting go, if the SP allowed it.

After a moment, the pair drew back slightly and moved around Terra and Carbide, getting a more complete look at the two. In the process, they moved behind them as well, coming to a stop in the entryway to the small cave together, and leaving Terra and her SP on the inside of the space. Interestingly, as they performed this manoeuvre, the technological underlay reached out ahead of them both to link up, before relinquishing the connection on the near side of them; it allowed the twins to encircle and move past the two on opposite sides without forcing Terra or Carbide to have to move their own feet, or step over anything.

Pronus and Fortuna came together by the entry way in an embrace that lasted just a moment longer than was probably proper for being in company, and involved a pair of kisses on each others' necks that were, it had to be said, far from sibling in appearance. Still embracing, they both turned their upper torsos slightly to look back at Terra, smiling warmly. The brother spoke first.

"We're so glad to have met you, Terra,"
"Carbide..." The sister chimed in with a delighted giggle.
"It has been a refreshing and informative exchange, and we thank you for it." He looked back to his twin.
"Shall we begin, sister dearest?"
"Yes, I think I'm ready." Now her face turned to watch Terra instead. "We have to say good-bye now, you see. Our contract won't wait around forever."
"And the truth is... we need you power, and your skills." Pronus turned his head as well, so both pairs of glowing yellow eyes were watching the two of them.
"It's nothing personal, you understand. It's just what we do..." They were both smiling broadly now, and their eyes began to crackle softly.

-=Know Effects=-

[???]: Target may have unknown attributes or effects that can be discerned through experimentation, or by actions taken to deliberately observe/scan or otherwise learn.

- Targets have separate bodies and could, in theory, be damaged independently, despite appearing to share a single Hp value.
- Targets appear to have full knowledge and sensory sharing with each other at all times
- Targets can move apart form one another, but will always remain at least partially connected by the mass of technological cast-offs that swarm about their lower portions.
- Targets seem to be more anatomically correct than is strictly necessary for androids/gynoids. This likely has no combat relevance.
- Targets were interested in learning a lot about Terra, Carbide, and how they fight - and seem to be satisfied that they have done so.

With Pronus and Fortuna separating from each other and exposing the full anatomical detail of their structure, Carbide's flushed state went into overdrive, as she was torn between wanting to hide her embarrassment at being shown such a spectacle so casually, and drinking in the entire sight. Covering her eyes wasn't much of an option either, as both of her hands were currently occupied with holding onto the enormous tower shields. As such, she was reduced to having her eyes wildly dart about, with whatever conversation being lost to the winds for her.

Terra, meanwhile, seemed to be much more level-headed than her companion, skeptically regarding Pronus in particular, who had moved in towards the entrance that they had come through. Carbide's attention was drawn elsewhere; with the android half of the pair moving on to the other side, her field of vision was mostly limited to Fortuna's metallic curves, and her elegant wineglass curves that flowed right down into a forbidden valley, exclusive to her eyes.

Then, Fortuna came to embrace Carbide, causing the little one's confused arousal to peak. The hug was itself the strangest sensation of all in the experience. Warm, pliant, and bountiful -- yet slick, metallic and soulless. What was this? This wasn't right, her instincts told her. The gesture's uncanny valley tipped over her excited state into a state of fear instead. As the gynoid drew away to join her twin, she unconsciously tensed up, her chest thumping with apprehension. Each of their movements now caused her to retreat further behind Terra, whose stance was still unmoving, and her fists were now clenched.

"... We'll be happy to demonstrate our power, then," said Terra, drawing back towards Carbide. Reaching down towards her trembling arms, she lightly clutched one of her partner's arms and gave it a firm squeeze. "I'll be counting on you, Carbide," she said, looking down towards Carbide, who returned the gaze with eyes as wide as a doe's. The little girl's shaking subsided, and she stared up at Terra's subtle smile. A fire welled up from within herself.

"O-Okay!"

Before she knew it, she was standing between Terra and the droids, as she held up the grey shield towards the duo, and the shinier metal shield towards the rear, pointed downwards towards the ground. Though the shields appeared to have many faults and cracks snaking through their surface, in reality, the shields were unquestionably immensely sturdy. The greyish rocky shield even moreso, as it appeared to be have additional reinforcement structures around its edges. With her feet firmly planted onto the metallic paneling, the spires that jutted out of her body seemed to respond to her will as a sentinel, growing outwards as if they were breathing in sync with her small chest.

"That girl sees so much in you, I'm kind of jealous," said Scarlet, as she selected the chips for their reception of their enemies' attack. "We don't know what these two can do, so we'll try these out."

The chip selection was quickly accepted by Terra, whose systems began to rapidly associate themselves with the proper attacking parameters. "... She's not alone in having someone to admire, you know," she said, firing up her own defenses, with a shimmering yellow glow enveloping her and a thin metal undercoat beneath her leotard. Her senses were now magnified, thanks to Scarlet's assistance, with every bit of movement around her open to her "eyes".

The yellow glow of her barrier then began to swirl about, forming spirals that floated about her body, with one particular one growing to quite a prominent size near her waist. The spiral projected itself from her barrier as a head-like shape, reminiscent of the Megalians she had fought earlier. The spirit-head exhaled in a ghastly voice as it careened forward towards the robots. Its groan appeared to have summoned a windy draft as well, which began to draw in Pronus and Fortuna as three more barrier spirals ejected themselves towards them.

Terra herself also appeared to be busy conjuring up more attacks, with her arms outstretched far out to her sides. The metal panels scattered about the area responded to her will, drawing themselves up in blobs of liquid metal, before hardening into crude iron shards. Two of them, a little ways to Terra's sides, shaped themselves into spear-like spires. Another twisted up into a tendril-like drill, hiding from sight directly behind the robots' collective body. At her command, all of them made an extremely rapid lunge towards their prey, in an overwhelming display of force.

With the twins making their intentions clearer, Terra took a moment to reassure her staunch protector, and the pair quickly set up their defences in preparation for a tough conflict. the twins, still embracing, decoupled slightly to face hem and the male, Pronus, stretched his arms and rolled his neck, still smiling in an unnervingly friendly and relaxed manner. On his left arm, a gleam lit up and fanned out, unfolding itself into a slightly concave kite shape for a few moments before fading from sight, while beside him, Fortuna raised her arms above her head in an equally luxuriant stretch, that culminated in a happy sigh, and a storm of electrical particles that covered the twins and glittered softly on their skin, as well as dancing in the air about them like a protective bubble.

"It's a pity you want to fight, dear... Really, I think my brother and I would prefer it much more if you just went on your way, and let us take you unawares. It's so much cleaner that way." She pouted softly as Carbide interposed herself, both shields ready to cover as many angles as she could. Pronus chuckled.

"Oh, you've upset my dear sister, little girl. She's taken quite a shine to you, you know. I think it hurts her feelings to see such a cute little one setting herself against us." The pair moved subtly as they bantered, shifting in rhythm from side to side while the mass of electronic parts around them swirled. Both sets of eyes continued to watch carefully, taking in each detail of Terra's actions.

Neither flinched as the empowered aura strike flew at them, or even blinked at all as the potent attack struck. It hit the outer shell of dancing sparks, and though they scattered away, the attack stopped there and had no further effect. Pronus held up one hand, moving a finger-tip back and forth.

"Ah-ah... Let's not rush the meal now, Terra darling... Artfully done, of course, but I'm sure you can do better. Remember, presentation is important!"
"Let's have a closer look..." His sister cut in, and then as one the pair were moving, very, very suddenly. They split, gliding around Terra and Carbide in opposite direction while the nest of mechanics divided and reformed in a circle. As they passed around, though, each twin extended a hand and released a bolt of bright electricity, shot through with crackles of blue and red. Each was aiming for a separate target, but Carbide was both quick and ready. She was able to block the shot directed at her by Pronus, and cross the small gap to get her other shield in front of Terra as well, a single layer of defence peeling off each shield, but sparing them both from harm.

Slightly less expected, though, was the seeping feeling of corrupted code working its way into the small support-program's code from each of the bolts. As she landed from the quick defence, Carbide began to feel suddenly stronger and stronger. Her shields weren't just light... she felt like she could probably level a building with them now. She also started to feel a strange affinity for the metallic plating beneath them, and a sense of familiarity with the effusive electricity all around them that she hadn't felt before. Both twins looked at her, as though measuring their handiwork.

Terra wasn't giving them any more time to chat idly, though, and the gale whipped up by her moaning attack before began to pull the twins in closer once they rejoined each other in front of her. Before the winds could do either of them any real harm, though, Pronus raised his arm to the wind current. The glimmering shield on his left arm came into view as it re-directed a portion of the blast around them and directly back at Terra instead; it hammered against her barrier, but Carbide's influence on the defence kept it form collapsing altogether. The rest of the winds only managed to scour off the remaining electrical field covering their finely detailed bodies, without harming either twin, but it did draw them in suddenly closer, which may or may not have been something Terra or Carbide expressly wanted.

Desired or not, Terra found herself chest to chest and face to face with Fortuna, and felt the same strange give an softness in her body that Carbide had experienced before. the woman took the opportunity to slip her arms about Terra for an extra moment, giggling quietly as she pressed strangely soft, warm breasts against her, before stepping back just a little bit. The maelstrom of parts had allowed Terra in as she pulled them close, and in any other circumstance it might have seemed a bit improperly intimate, given her state of undress and the way the nest seemed like a part of her.

"You act like you want to fight, Terra, but are you sure that's what you really want? I really think you'll enjoy being with us!" The gynoid still sounded more like she was playing than fighting, but the twins had already made at least partially serious assaults, so it wasn't a stretch to imagine that the banter was a deliberate disarming tactic.

Holding her course, Terra continued her attack, beginning to draw up two more sections of the ground in front of her to attack with. As she did, though, Fortuna leaned in even closer, running her hands over the elementalist's arms and purring softly.

"You simply must share your toys, dear.... It's only polite..." She drew back suddenly, the mass of parts swirling around Terra again to exclude her from the intimate position, and as Fortuna drew back to her brother, the other woman would notice that somehow she had lost control of the two metal shards; Fortuna had begun making small gestures similar to Terra's, almost in mimicry, but now it became clear that her gestures were the ones in control, and the two shards suddenly lanced towards Carbide instead. the smaller girl managed to get her stronger shield up, but the two chunks struck hard, empowered by the ground they came from, and the shield broke under the force of the second one, which went on to shred away most of her protective casing as well.

"We should share ours too, sister dear, don't you agree? Share and share alike, as they say..." Pronus had moved to be opposite his twin, once more putting Terra and Carbide between them, and as they made a quick gliding spin about the pair this time, the bolts of electricity they released carried significantly more range. the blasts were aimed at Terra and Carbide respectively, but both had the power to envelope not only the navi and her SP, but also scattered over the twins as well.

In the moment that the light subsided, Terra was able to see something potentially concerning about the twins. As the wash of electricity passed over them, Fortuna let her head roll back, sighing softly and closing her eyes for a moment, while Pronus gave a soft groan of satisfaction. A small amount of the dented and malfunctioning parts they both displayed seemed to click back into place as the wave passed.

Carbide, meanwhile, had managed to block one side of the blast with her remaining shield, its electrical alignment drinking in the attack without damage, but it had been left to the remains of her armour to take the hit from the other side. Terra had also taken both blasts, but her own defences were up to the task of withstanding them.

As before, a series of garbled and broken code fragments accompanied the attacks, and it seemed as though everyone in the room was dealing with a new selection of oddities. Terra found her vision sharpening acutely; in some intrinsic way she could see and feel where the best ways to strike were... unfortunately this enhancement also drew her attention to the more appearing curves and shapes of her enemies, and it was an effort not to linger and enjoy the sights. More worrisome than this, though, was the way part of the glitching effect was wreaking havoc with her customiser, as though it were reconfiguring itself on the fly, against her will. Space rapidly disappeared, filled up with junk, and she could only keep some of her abilities working, while at the same time the junked space re-formed itself into a support system for her signatures, helping them recover more quickly.

Carbide, Meanwhile, was struck by the feeling of being suddenly coated in a thin, warm layer of viscous fluid that no amount of rubbing or scraping would remove. Her hands shook and her fingers felt like jelly, and it took all of her effort to hold onto her remaining shield without dropping it.

The twins also seemed to be dealing with an assortment of oddities, though the pair seemed used to the process. They glanced at each other, then at Terra and Carbide. Fortuna darted closer, bending down to bring her face close to Carbide again, and reaching out to stroke her head. There was a soft tingling sensation as one of the anomalies in carbide's system faded — Her new-found electrical affinity dissipated almost as swiftly as it had come.

"There you go dear, much better!" she cooed, attempting to pinch the SP's cheek with a grin. Pronus stood by her a moment later as well, not kneeling down and giving Carbide a rather unfortunate eye-view. Instead he reached out and placed one hand more firmly on her head.

"And we can't let you have that one either. Allow me..." A much more unpleasant sensation followed for the little SP as a feeling like having part of her code sucked out accompanied the android's touch; the glitch giving her inhuman strength and power was drained away while he smiled down at her.

Terra wasn't putting up with this and launched a surprise final assault. The last spike of metal struck while they were distracted, but a slight catch of breath from the female was followed by a flash from her eyes just before the attack struck. It still landed, striking through the male twin's shoulder and piercing it in the first really respectable damage that Terra had managed, but even then, it didn't seem to do as much as it ought to have; it seemed as though Fortuna had weakened it in some way just before it hit. Pronus, for his part, grunted in what was likely a quite genuine expression of pain and he and his sister drew back, keeping the torn-open hole in the metal repair bay between them and Terra for now.

"All right, little girl, all right... Fine..." His voice sounded less amused than it had, though Fortuna was still pouting softly instead of looking serious.

-=Dark tunnels=-

40% Soil [Most of the ground]
35% Metal [Scattered sections of degraded panels, including most of the side passage]
20% Moss [Evenly mixed with the earthy ground]
5% Broken [Small area between Terra and the Twins, in the middle of the side passage]

Moss: Acts in all ways like Grass terrain, but does not amplify fire damage (though it is still consumed in the same manner)

Area is an array of columns made of stone and hard earth, supporting a large, gradually sloping area. Terra and Carbide are close to one more solid wall, with a properly formed tunnel leading off it, into a well lit area beyond, out of sight.

-=Know Effects=-

[???]: Target may have unknown attributes or effects that can be discerned through experimentation, or by actions taken to deliberately observe/scan or otherwise learn.

- Twins exhibit aspects of both Glitch and Variable subtypes.
- Appear capable of both stealing their opponents' chip data directly, and also turning attacks back on their enemies.
- Seem to generally attack in tandem, favouring Pincer attacks.
- Seem to be able to convert electrical energy into repair power at a greatly reduced conversion.

- Targets have separate bodies and could, in theory, be damaged independently, despite appearing to share a single Hp value.
- Targets appear to have full knowledge and sensory sharing with each other at all times.
- Targets can move apart from one another, but will always remain at least partially connected by the mass of technological cast-offs that swarm about their lower portions.
- Targets seem to be more anatomically correct than is strictly necessary for androids/gynoids. This likely has no combat relevance.
- Targets were interested in learning a lot about Terra, Carbide, and how they fight - and seem to be satisfied that they have done so.

The Glitches
Jelly Shakes (Negative glitch): The victim's fingers (or other appendages) feel like they've turned to quivering jelly. For every turn after the first that they hold a piece of wielded gear, there is a chance they will drop it, losing the item. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Viscous Film (Cosmetic Effect): The victim's skin looks and feels like it is covered in a very thin film of some warm, slippery, viscous fluid that defies being removed. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed.

Power Swell (Positive Glitch): The victim feels a surge of wild elemental energy. Elemental damage dealt by the victim is increased by and additional 50% of Base to Source. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Piercing Eyes (Balance Glitch): The victim temporarily gains preternatural targeting ability, gaining the benefit of a take aim action on all attacks, which stacks with any other accuracy modifiers. After two turns of this, however, the glitch burns out, leaving their vision impaired for an additional two turns, and decreasing the accuracy of all attacks by one rank. Glitch can be removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect during its active turns, but is treated like a nerfing effect after it burns out, and cannot be removed until it expires.

Lingering Gaze (Cosmetic Effect): The victim finds their gaze lingering on the features of their opponents that they would normally find most appealing, and may have a hard time shaking this disposition. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed, plus one additional turn thereafter.

Auto-Custom (Balance Glitch): The victim's navi customiser automatically re-purposes itself; they lose 40 points worth of NC space, but each turn may reduce one of their active signatures on cooldown by one turn, as per the Custom+1 NCP. Lost NC space may result in the deactivation of other NC parts — the victim may choose which ones if so. This glitch has no effect on viruses or Support Programs, who simply act as carriers. Glitch lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Cover-Fire (Positive Glitch): The victim gains access to two passive buster shots per turn, which they may use at any time. Glitch lasts two turns, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Just A Little Closer (Cosmetic Effect): The victim feels the strong urge to touch or caress any target they attack, and may have trouble shaking this disposition. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed.

Hyper Sensitivity (Balance Glitch): The Victim's skin becomes extremely sensitive to the touch. they take an additional 15 points of null damage that cannot be reduced any time they take damage from an attack, however they also gain an innate 10% evasion chance against any attack, which functions on its own, or adds onto any existing evasion attempts. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

The battle was looking quite favorable. For the moment, the rocky duo didn't have a scratch on them, and their opponents had sustained a relatively strong hit. However, both Carbide and Terra seemed to be breathing heavily, and had drawn back slightly from the attack. Terra had her arms crossed over herself, while Carbide was struggling to keep up her remaining shield. The latter's shields had sustained a huge amount of damage, and her arms were trembling, but she had been successful in defending Terra to the end of the first bout of attacks.

"Haa... haa... H-Heh! You're gonna have to try harder than that to get past me now!!" exclaimed Carbide with a forced grin, as her fingers began to flex and curl involuntarily around the handle of her heavy metal shield that still remained. Her eyes were locked onto Pronus's distressed face, feeling smug that they had the upper hand for now. Internally, however, her mind was fraught with panic, as she experienced a strange mix of weakness and strength. It felt as if all of her strength was being redirected towards her core, and her limbs were losing their strength -- almost as if her skin was being covered in some kind of slippery jelly. I-I can't hold on to my shield! What's going on?! Ugh! she thought frantically.

Then, she felt a warm glow coming from behind her. As Carbide was about to turn around, she felt Terra's hand on her arm once again. The gentle grip glowed dimly before Carbide felt strength returning to her extremities, and she grasped the shield she was holding tightly once more. The slimy feeling was still there, but she didn't feel as if she was going to drop to her knees at any moment now. "... Thank you, Carbide," she heard Terra say. Her heart filled with pride as her forced smile turned into a newly resolute one, and she raised her shield in preparation for the next round of attacks.

"Leave it to me!"

Terra withdrew her hand, her eyes still straight forward. Once again the ethereal glow from her hands became visible, but this time, as she had withdrawn from Carbide, the glow spread out through her own body, refreshing herself of one of the effects that had plagued her from the twins' attack. For some reason, her eyes felt both irritated and focused at the same time. As she tried to observe the male half of their adversary to avoid missing any details, she suddenly found herself unable to tear her sight away from Fortuna's body instead. As much as she tried, she was forced to examine her enemy's enchanting bareness, just as Carbide was earlier. With even control of her own sight wrested away from her, Terra recalled her Support Program being embraced by the female droid earlier, and immediately understood her reaction. Despite how enchanting their movements were, she could not tear away the sense of unsettlement in her heart, and this only further cemeted her feelings. Her boots scratched against the metal flooring beneath her, with the golden shine of her elemental barrier returning to its normal state.

Then, at the back of her mind, a brief crackle predated the opening of a private audio link. "Terra, I think I've gleaned enough out of this. I'll send in the main force. Any objections?" Scarlet's voice rang loud and clear through her mind, allowing her wash away her fears, if even for a moment.

"... No," replied Terra, with unmoving lips. The audio link turned passive as she received her armaments, and the green-clad girl set to work. Beneath her, the metal paneling began to warp and shift around her boots, glowing red-hot as the heat began to spread out in a circle about her. The circle rapidly expanded into a pool of molten metal, radiating intense heat with an eerie red glow. The defenses that the duo had put up changed just as quickly. Carbide's shield turned into one made of obsidian, with glowing red cracks all about it. Terra herself had a glowing red barrier, and her usual crimson under-armor defense.

She leapt back slightly, loading up the battlechip into her hand as an array of half-molten metal chunks from under her feet began to revolve about her wrist. The rocks clicked and shifted together, assembling themselves into the dark red barrel of the LavaCannon battlechip. Heat began to gather rapidly within the cannon before it erupted with a thunderous noise, blasting out a blood-red sphere towards Fortuna.
