In Her Element

As Terra stumbled down, the two mechanical assassins moved forward a step, then paused. One winced, and the other snarled. After a beat of silence, Pronus turned his head and nodded again towards his sister.

"Alright, we have to leave, you're right, my love. It is a pity, I'm sure we're so close to getting her cut off." He sighed. "We have to go. Another day then." together the twins gave her a last look, then turned their backs on the beleaguered terraformer. Barely a half step later, however, they both moved in a lightning flash of speed and perfect unison, showing the same sudden reaction time they'd first displayed when Terra had met them before. twisting about and sliding apart slightly, they darted back towards her, hands rising amongst a bevy of other cables and tracer-point lasers that poked out of their part cloud.

the storm of electrical bolts that poured forward towards her prone form might have been the end for Terra's battle, if she hadn't been prepared for some attempted trick or other. A few of the shots managed to connect with her already damaged form, but a moment later she had sunk into the ground and vanished. when she reappeared, the twins tried to correct their aim, but she had already moved too far away for them to readjust properly, and most of the spark storm missed her — no more than half a dozen of the numerous and dangerously accurate shots actually managed to find her. The assassins didn't slow, snarling and shouting viciously as they followed the first assault with several larger bolts of corrupted energy at her new position.

Two bolts struck, spreading more corrupting code into her, even as she cleared up some of the worst existing glitches. It was hard to tell what the first bolt was doing to her — it was something between her chip queue and activating them, but without any chips immediately to hands, Terra couldn't be sure of its exact effect. The other was more obvious. Her body began, quite suddenly and vibrantly to radiate a dancing rainbow coloured aurora that shifted and flared around her in an ever changing spectrum of hues. A bolt of red cracked off the edge of it, lancing out to hit Pronus in the shoulder as he pressed the attack. It was enough to throw off his aim, however,er as he levelled another glitch bolt at Terra, and had it diverted into the cave wall behind with another quaking rumble.

Coming in desperate to make their claim on her, another participant arrived on the field between them, unable to sit back and watch her navi in trouble any longer. Despite her critical condition, Carbide's desperation to be where she was most needed saw her appear between the attacking twins and Terra, passing her own defences to her navi instead while she faced them down.

The twins' eyes flicked between the two targets, reassessing now, and there was a moment of uncertainty between them. It was unlikely they were fazed by Carbide's sudden re-appearance, so much as deciding how to handle the new situation, but it was enough of a moment for Terra to reach out to Carbide with some support of her own.

The hesitation didn't last, but with Terra down on the ground, and critically injured, Carbide was able to more effectively cover her from each side as they attacked. Another hammering storm of sparks rained down on their position as both twins resumed the attack, spreading wider around them as they fired, but Carbide was able to cover her navi from one side of the attacks, even though this left her to take the other half across her own back as well. This time, a grievous number of the tracer shots sunk into her body; Covering Terra was her main goal, and that meant taking much of the incoming pain herself, at least until her navi could recover. She was going to recover, right?

More glitches riddled her small body, mounting on top of the lingering ones that still existed from her previous efforts against the twins, as stronger bolts followed the weaker ones. Still Carbide endured; her armour had worn away, and the healing she'd received from Terra was all but spent as well, while strange and alien sensations began to filter through her body from the bad code infusion.
Beneath her cover, Terra was hardening her body to stone, and a modicum of safety, but even as her defences rose, Fortuna reached out a hand ans swiped through the air, clawing at empty air before pulling back into herself.

"No you don't, you bitch!" the angry words accompanied the gesture, and Terra felt one of the spreading masses of glitch being torn out of her rough. The stone cracked and crumbled, and despite the hardness of her defence, Terra was forced into painful convulsion and the warning tone of her Undershirt activating. The casing that Carbide had given her was intact, but that hadn't stopped the removal of the glitch dealing its internally destructive damage to her as it tore free.

Now on either side of the two, Pronus and Fortuna both lifted their hands and put them forward together; the bright balls of crackling light were familiar now, as one of their stronger blasting attacks, and both assassins let out loud exclamations of effort as they released them. The balls of energy spiralled in and exploded over the navi and her SP, each shot spreading across the pair. Terra felt herself buffeted by each blast in succession, but the adaptive nature of her armour let it survive the first blast wave, and collapse only after the second had struck. Carbide, tucked in close to her navi, took one of the blast waves, and felt her Second Chance flash its final warning to her for the second time this battle. The other wave rolled over without harming her, however, by what could only seem like the sheerest of lucky margins and the returned bodily protection of Terra. Nevertheless, she was able to stand again, even if Terra currently couldn't, and put the battered stance defiantly between her navi, and the twins.

One more hit for either of them would be one hit too many, at this point, and there was a good chance that the assassins knew it. They were both riddled with bugs and glitches, and out of many of their tricks, but across the way, the twins had regrouped together and were heaving and panting heavily. steam and smoke rose from hem in equal degrees and many small parts like over-heated mechanics and blown fuses seemed to be popping out of several parks of their bodies. There was a clear sense of desperation and exhaustion in their eyes, and more than that... dismay. Carbide felt her senses blur, the glitches in her system clouding over. feeling went out of her extremities, then creeping inwards over the rest of her body, until she couldn't feel anything at all. Next, her sight dimmed and went dark. One by one each of her other senses fled; she couldn't' taste anything in her mouth any more, nor smell the ozone and fresh earth in their air. Strangely, though, her hearing remained, as the single thread connecting her to the battle still.

"No! No!! Damnit all... Why won't you just give up and die!!" The female voice; Fortuna sounded livid. The words came as panting, though, and she wasn't managing to hide how completely spent she sounded in these few moments. "Damnit! Not enough!"

"We can't stay any longer. Not if they're going to keep clinging on like this. that was the last chance, sister. Come." Pronus, too, sounded exhausted, but where his voice had been sinister and cruel in the early stages of the fight, he now sounded cautious and resigned, along with his fatigue. "We take the easy mark. Now."

Carbide couldn't hear either of the twins' voices any more after that, but Terra had a better view. With the glitches still keeping her down, she was only able to watch as Carbide took the brunt of the twins' combined attacks defending her. When the last blast waves had cleared, stripping away her last protections, she was left to watch her SP stare the assassins down unmoving in front of her while they panted and shouted. Carbide's armour was damaged in places, but with small crackles and sparks of purple corrupt ode, it seemed to be continuing to degrade further and further on its own, showing progressively more of the defender's skin as it began to fall away.

Even so, the pair across from them seemed honest in their frustration this time, and at the final words from the male twin, the storm of broken parts and electronic detritus enveloped them fully, then collapsed in on itself and vanished, leaving the two alone in the chamber. The other party had fled the scene and Terra and carbide were left alone on the battle field, but even so, it was hard to feel like they'd achieved a victory here. They had held their ground, at least, and all around them the spoils of their battle remained strewn across the the ground as fragments of broken code.

Devoid of most senses and sensory input, save her hearing, Carbide felt a bit like she was falling in a black void, an a small part of her felt the urge and need to be somewhere bright again, somewhere under the sun light and the open sky, where she could play and have fun. She could still hear, and it didn't sound like the two assassins were still around, now, but until the corruption in her code ran its cours,e the small SP couldn't even feel her own body. Terra was still beside her, though; that was a certainty that even her sudden sensory black-out wouldn't shake.

Known Effects

[???]: Target Details Fully Resolved!

Pronus — The Adapting Twin:

-Glitch Subtype abilities Glitch-Eater and Floating Point.
-Stores Strengthen, but does not use it.
-Responsible for the Reflect ability.
-Nullifies Electrical damage on his own, Absorbs it at a reduced percentage when with his partner.
-Has access to one of the pair's healing signatures, and one of their terrain signatures when alone.
-Gains Planar Armour when using their shared defence ability alone.
-Loves his sister more than himself.
-Prefers to be the more visible target when performing pincer attacks.

Fortuna — The Fate-Tossed Twin:

-Variable Subtype abilities Buff and Debuff
-Uses her brother's stored Strengthen to fuel debuffing when they are together.
-Responsible for Beat Support chip-stealing ability.
-Nullifies Electrical damage on her own, Absorbs it at a reduced percentage when with her partner.
-Has access to two of the pair's healing signatures, and one of their terrain signatures when alone.
-Has access to their shared passive status cure when alone.
-Gains Planar Barrier when using their shared defence ability alone.
-Fears for her brother's well-being.
-Stealthier of the two twins.

Pronus-Fortuna — Assassin Twins:

-Share complete sensory knowledge and feedback with each other at all times in real-time, regardless of separation.
-Electrical element attacks and signatures, most laced with Glitch effect. Both twins retain access to their respective parts of these attacks regardless of separation.
-Planar defence is electrical only, and fails to function on any non-electrically aligned terrain.
-Think and plan together; very intelligent. What they say aloud, for others to hear, is not necessarily what they've planned to do in private communications.
-Cannot use chips of their own, and appear to be unoperated, fending for themselves.
-Are program cannibals in some way; can only sustain themselves by consuming other programs.
-Assassin contract work perhaps the only viable means for them to survive in this manner?
-Are able to assimilate the essences of those they consume, gaining a portion of their capabilities and possibly more.
-Prey on operated navigators and SPs by corrupting them to the point that their emergency systems are compromised. Ten simultaneous glitches on one target seems to be their threshold for achieving this.
-Seem to harbour some resentment towards operated navis, but genuinely do seem to mean it when they say it's "nothing personal".

The Glitches

Chip Slip (Negative Glitch): The victim's chip queue gets randomly scrambled. All the chips the victim uses in a single turn are randomised in the order that they actually activate. Other actions are unaffected. Lasts three turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Rainbow Aurora (Positive Glitch)(Mutable Glitch): The victim is surrounded by a bright aurora of shifting lights. Once each turn, this aurora strikes out to hit a random enemy with a bolt of elemental energy. This glitch is highly mutable and can interact with other glitches, as well as growing in strength on its own. The number of attacks, as well as the strength of those attacks, can both grow to a maximum of five grades. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Stability Pulse (Positive Glitch): The victim emits regular pulses of stabilising energy. While not particularly useful as healing, the effect can help allies hang on in dire moments. At the beginning of each turn, the victim and every ally within a Blast3 range of them recovers a single Hp. Lasts three turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

NC Mis-Read (Negative Glitch): The victim's Navi customiser suffers a glitch that causes various installs to read as other things, and induce those effects. Each turn, Every NC install that the victim has will behave as another part that has the same NC cost. If no other part has the same NC cost, the part simply stops working for that turn. For example, a victim with a Shield program, may find themselves generating FastArmour at the beginning of the round instead, and have no access to their shield. duplicates of stacking parts will stack correctly. If this glitch causes duplicate parts that would not normally stack (such as two undershirts), the duplicates have no effect. This glitch has no effect on SPs, though they do act as carriers. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Fly A Kite (Balance Glitch): Let's go fly a kite! Up to the highest height! Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring! Up through the atmosphere! Up where the air is clear! Oh, let's go fly a kite! When you send it flying up there, All at once you're lighter than air! You can dance on the breeze! Over houses and trees! With your first holding tight; to the string of your kite!!

Sensory Fall (Negative Glitch): The victim suffers an almost suffocating level of sensory loss. All of their senses will shut off completely, leaving nothing behind. Only one sense (randomly selected) will remain unaffected by this glitch. This glitch has no hard mechanical effect, but should be played out by the victim as appropriate. Your moderator my decide to enact appropriate debuffs as well, or simulate them in combat calculations (eg. imposing blind while sight is lost). Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Degrading Armour (Negative Glitch)(Mutable Glitch): The victim's armour begins to degrade and lose function. At the end of each turn, the victim automatically loses any Layer 3 defences they might have active. A visual cosmetic effect accompanies this glitch, in whatever way is appropriate for the victim. This glitch is highly mutable, and is prone to increasing in severity. It can increase to a maximum of five tiers. At second tier, the automatic layer loss occurs both at the end of the turn, and also no more than two actions after any layer 3 defence is activated. Third tier causes all layer 3 defences to be destroyed automatically after taking one hit, though they still block overflow damage unless struck with the correct piercing type. Fourth tier causes all layer 3 defences to be vulnerable to take double damage and overspill from all attacks, as though weak to them. Fifth tier prevents any layer 3 defences from being applied to the victim at all. The cosmetic effect of this glitch progresses with each tier as well. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Status Catalyst (Negative Glitch)(Catalytic Glitch): The victim suffers a temporary status ailment, randomly determined, and taking effect immediately upon application. this effect lasts only until the end of the turn. At the end of the turn, the Glitch checks for any Mutable Glitches in the victim's system. If none are present, the glitch is dispelled. If a Mutable Glitch is present this glitch interacts with that one, and creates a new, long-term glitch of a related nature to one or the other, or both. If the Mutable Glitch and the Catalytic Glitch are of different natures (Positive, Negative, Balance), the new form will be either Balance, or the nature of the Catalytic Glitch. If multiple Mutable Glitches exist, one is randomly selected. Glitch lasts only for the turn that it is applied.

Dead Still (Negative Glitch): The victim suffers a permanent Hold effect, preventing movement. Teleports and other forms of forced movement still work. The victim loses all feeling and sensation from the middle down, and loses the ability to stand upright. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Fissured Growth (Balance Glitch): The victim gains regeneration, recovering 5Hp per action through this glitch. The glitch records how much Hp it has restored. If this glitch is removed, it immediately deals direct damage to the victim equal to half the amount of Hp it has restored at the time of removal. This damage cannot be reduced or mitigated in any way, but will be blocked by Undershirt/Second Chance. If this glitch resolves out of combat, it does not deal any damage. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Corruption Step (Negative Glitch): The victim generates a Small Area of cracked terrain directly beneath them when they receive this glitch. At the beginning of each turn, they generate another small area of cracked terrain around their feet. At the end of each turn, if the victim has not moved from the place they began the turn, they generate a Small Area of Broken terrain, and will fall in if they do not possess the appropriate footwear. This glitch will not cause the victim to generate Cracked terrain if they begin their turn already over Broken, or in a Broken hole. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

SAS Wild (Balance Glitch): The victim suffers random instances of Sig Chill and Sig Burn each turn. Each turn, two of the victim's signatures will gain an additional turn of cool down, or be forced onto cool down as though they had been used, and they will receive two instances of Sig Chill to allocate to signatures already on cooldown. SPs with this glitch may allocate their Sig Chill to their navi, though the Sig Burn aspect will only take effect on signatures customised for the SP specifically. All instances of Sig Chill and Sig Burn created by this glitch may stack with each other on the same signature, increasing or decreasing the active cool down appropriately. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.[/b]

Ultra Analytics (Balance Glitch): The victim gains the ability to analyse anything and everything around them to a fantastic degree. At the same time, the volume of sense data available to them is almost overwhelming and they are easily distracted. Their general accuracy with all attacks is decreased by one rank, however, they gain one free use of Take Aim per round, and instances of Take Aim can stack on the same action — without limit. The more the victim analyses a single thing, the more certain their action becomes. The Blind status effect nullifies this glitch. Otherwise, Glitch lasts three turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Too Much Detail (Negative Glitch): The victim begins to notice extreme amounts of detail about everything around them, and has a tendency to fixate on these things. For every two actions that they take, they lose one action to obsessing over the details of everything a round them. Glitch lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Planar Reaction (Positive Glitch): The victim gains a rapidly adapting form of Planar Body and Planar Defences that respond to any and all elemental damage and terrain. The victim is always counted as being aligned with the element of terrain they stand on, and any damage they take from any source is always treated as though striking against an aligned target. The actual visible element of defences do not change (null elemental defences will appear null), except in the exact moment that they take elemental damage. Glitch lasts until combat ends or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Piercing Insight (Positive Glitch): The victim gains a preternatural insight into the coming actions and behaviours of any opponents they face, whether they be virus, navi or something else. They will know automatically how many actions any target arrayed against them has each turn, and will be able to accurately predict what the first two actions they take next round will be (Your mod will list these after each target). Glitch lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Quick Brace (Positive Glitch): The victim gains the ability to trigger the Brace action as a free action, twice per turn. Uses do not stack; regardless of when the ability is triggered, only one instance of brace may be applied to any single attack. For an SP, this Glitch causes any Defend action they take to be counted as a Braced Defend. Lasts three turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Numbness from Pain (Positive Glitch): The victim's skin feels less sensitive, but is also resistant to damage. They gain the effects of Damage Reduction 20. Break attacks ignore this, but they do not take increased damage. Lasts until over-written by another body effect, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Chip Recovery (Positive Glitch): The victim automatically refreshes one chip of their choice that has already been used this battle each time they successfully activate another chip. This does not allow any chip to be used more than once per turn. Chips broken or stolen by an opponent do not count as being successfully activated. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

SAS Overclock (Balance glitch): The victim's signature abilities are all immediately refreshed, and for the duration are treated as having a cooldown of only one turn. For the duration, signatures may not be targeted with SigChill, custom programs or any other means of further reducing their cooldown. After two turns of this, however, the glitch burns out, and the victim's SAS crashes completely for an additional two turns. Glitch can be removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect during its active turns, but is treated like a nerfing effect after it burns out, and cannot be removed until it expires.

Elemental Reflux (Negative Glitch): The victim suffers a backlash of elemental energy inside their body, which shifts wildly from element to element and grows stronger over time. On the first turn, the victim takes 10 elemental damage of their own element, or Fire if the victim is Null elemental. the damage increases by 10 each turn, and changes element at random. This damage is delivered on application, and then at the start of each turn, before any other actions occur (including passives). It cannot be reduced or mitigated in any way, but will be stopped by the Undershirt program. It is susceptible to being increased by the victim's elemental weakness if they have one. If the glitch ever deals 100 damage or more in one application, or if it triggers the victim's Undershirt, it is immediately burned out and removed. Otherwise, glitch lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Spreading Numbness (Negative Glitch)(Mutable Glitch): The victim suffers a creeping numbness of body, which makes it difficult for them to function in a coordinated manner. Melee and Slashing attacks are decreased in accuracy by 10%, and there is a 10% chance that any wielded gear will be automatically disarmed any time it is used or struck by an enemy. The victim's base evasion is also hampered by 10%. This glitch is prone to increasing in severity, and can increase to a maximum of five tiers. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Buster Crash (Negative Glitch): The victim suffers a short duration Buster Crash, as per the effect. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Charge Limiter (Negative Glitch): The victim cannot charge their buster at all, and cannot use any signature abilities or chips that require buster charges. This also blocks signatures with the Charge Burner nerf. This Glitch has no effect on victims who do not possess a normal Buster. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Lead-Foot (Negative Glitch): The victim's movements grow heavy; they cannot dodge or move effectively and dodges confer only the evasion bonus of a feint. Feints, in turn, confer only the evasion bonus of movement, and the victim cannot use the full Movement action at all. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Ocean-Drinker (Positive Glitch): The victim gains the Aqua-Eater effect, absorbing any aqua damage dealt to them and gaining 50% of the Final damage as healing. Their actual element does not change, so they may still take damage from other seemingly aqua sources, such as being submerged if their element is not Aqua already. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Ants in the Pants (Negative Glitch): The victim feels compelled to keep moving and running around, unable to keep their feet still. They must spend at least one action each turn using a Movement, and travelling as far as they can with it. This Glitch will not force a victim to flee from a battle, and they retain full control of where, when and how they move. The victim is also struck with the unshakable belief that removing all of their undergarments will placate the urge to move and run; this may or may not be true. Lasts three turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Jelly Shakes (Negative glitch): The victim's fingers (or other appendages) feel like they've turned to quivering jelly. For every turn after the first that they hold a piece of wielded gear, there is a chance they will drop it, losing the item. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Viscous Film (Cosmetic Effect): The victim's skin looks and feels like it is covered in a very thin film of some warm, slippery, viscous fluid that defies being removed. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed.

Power Swell (Positive Glitch): The victim feels a surge of wild elemental energy. Elemental damage dealt by the victim is increased by and additional 50% of Base to Source. Lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Piercing Eyes (Balance Glitch): The victim temporarily gains preternatural targeting ability, gaining the benefit of a take aim action on all attacks, which stacks with any other accuracy modifiers. After two turns of this, however, the glitch burns out, leaving their vision impaired for an additional two turns, and decreasing the accuracy of all attacks by one rank. Glitch can be removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect during its active turns, but is treated like a nerfing effect after it burns out, and cannot be removed until it expires.

Lingering Gaze (Cosmetic Effect): The victim finds their gaze lingering on the features of their opponents that they would normally find most appealing, and may have a hard time shaking this disposition. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed, plus one additional turn thereafter.

Auto-Custom (Balance Glitch): The victim's navi customiser automatically re-purposes itself; they lose 40 points worth of NC space, but each turn may reduce one of their active signatures on cooldown by one turn, as per the Custom+1 NCP. Lost NC space may result in the deactivation of other NC parts — the victim may choose which ones if so. This glitch has no effect on viruses or Support Programs, who simply act as carriers. Glitch lasts two turns, or until removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Cover-Fire (Positive Glitch): The victim gains access to two passive buster shots per turn, which they may use at any time. Glitch lasts two turns, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

Just A Little Closer (Cosmetic Effect): The victim feels the strong urge to touch or caress any target they attack, and may have trouble shaking this disposition. Lasts until the parent glitch is removed.

Hyper Sensitivity (Balance Glitch): The Victim's skin becomes extremely sensitive to the touch. They take an additional 15 points of null damage that cannot be reduced any time they take damage from an attack, however they also gain an innate 10% evasion chance against any attack, which functions on its own, or adds onto any existing evasion attempts. Lasts until combat ends, or removed with Status Cure, Glitch Eater or other similar effect.

It was almost like she was asleep. Her eyes were open, but she couldn't see anything. She tried to move, but nothing was responding. Touch, sight, smell. Nothing. All she could sense was a faint background sound, crackling like an old phonograph, eventually resolving into some distant voices. They were saying something. She wasn't able to understand them, but she knew they were voices, because she was trying to understand them. Was that related? Everything else was a haze of static, like she was swimming in a sea of needles.

What was she doing in here, anyway?
She had to do something important.
There was something she had to do. There was something she had to do with this warm thing that was now wrapping around her, protecting her from the sea of needles. Slowly, she started to discern things from the static, but not before a sharp pain assaulted her temples. Almost as quickly, however, the warmth caressed her head, ran its fingers through her hair, and let the pain melt into more warmth.

The nothingness in her eyes slowly faded, and feeling returned to her body. Tendrils of static coursed beneath her skin, and her face immediately contorted with the intense pain that it brought. Once more, the event from before repeated itself, and fingers delicately traced over the painful tendrils until they smoothly flowed out of her body. This time, however, she saw Terra's maternal expression above her, and felt her arms tightly cradling her cold body. Carbide's lips creased into a tired smile.

"Hey, Terra, I did it... Did you see? I was really cool, right?" said Carbide. She felt her head being brushed gently, and someone's cheek resting against her head.

"... Yes. You were amazing. Thank you, Carbide," said Terra, tightening her embrace as long as she could, before she allowed Carbide to dissipate once again, sending her away to rest in the PET for the second time. The geomancer Navi stood up to survey the surroundings. By all the senses that had been returned to her after she had devoted herself to clearing out all the glitch errors, she could not sense the assassin duo anywhere nearby. It seems like they really had left them to pursue something else. She didn't have any time to linger around much longer. Thankfully, the lead that she had been following was in the opposite direction of where she had seen the twins leave. Scarlet had, against her own protests, provided her with a healing subchip, so she was more prepared to start off as soon as she could, though the operator had herself protested slightly against her even continuing in the first place.

Even so, Scarlet herself was curious about the beast that they had encountered, and she had relented to Terra's stubbornness. Dusting herself off, Terra set off for the tunnel that she had come through earlier, before Carbide took her on the detour, eager to leave the area as quickly as she could.

As she set off, a small furry creature with an eyepatch and an armband peeked around the corner, and headed off as well.

[Z > 1545, BF > 680, ExF > 7.]
[Use SmallEnergyPack: Terra.EXE. Unsummon: Carbide.SP. Battle 16 - Ready.]
[Terra.EXE: 101 HP.]
Left in the quiet of the dark cavern, Terra had a few moments to recuperate with Carbide, before sending the brave little SP back home to rest up properly. For her own part, the terraformer wasn't done with her pursuit and still had a path to follow. The vague sense of the massive presence still tickled, ever so faintly, at the edges of her awareness, and she was able to pick the correct passage out of the broader cavern, slipping between the earthy columns as she went, and move towards it again.

The tunnel had stopped sloping downwards now, but as she walked, Terra would be able to sense that the feeling of pressure on and around the cave system was growing steadily the further she went. Earthen columns gradually faded through to stone supports, each of which bore signs of water erosion, while the moisture in the air began to climb. Condensation made the walls glisten, and built up deposits of drip and gather points formed squat stalagmites here and there on the ground, and thin, pointed stalactites on the ceiling above many of them. Individual points of light now seemed to come from faintly luminescent glitters in the the rocky walls. Thin veins of a shining material that seemed faintly crystalline in nature traced through the walls and ceiling in an erratic web that glowed, but didn't manage to cast any true light.

There was a very faint movement of air in the passage, and it felt damp and cool. It made no sound, but Terra could feel it flowing in long shifts, first towards her for the better part of a minute, then away from her again as the flow changed direction. All around, the sense of overhead pressure clarified into a gradual wave, along with the distant sound of rolling water; the shift of a tidal current, perhaps. The presence she was following was further on, however, and as Terra moved, selecting the right path wherever the tunnel system branched or split, she could feel that it was still... far away still, and faint on her perception, but not drawing away any more; either resting, or perhaps waiting.

It was a while before she encountered anything other than herself in the meandering caverns, but eventually a faint sound of rocks shifting and the crack of stone brought her attention to something nearer by, and notably more active. The most obvious creature that Terra would see first, was a very large, angry-looking insectoid creature of some sort. It was hard to make out any proper details in the low light; the faint glows of the mineral seams only really let Terra work out its shape, and suggested that it might be a faint sky blue colour, although that could just as easily have been the tone of the glow itself, which was also a faint blue. The creature was cutting and clawing at one side of the rocky passageway. It had many legs that clacked and tapped against the ground as it moved, quickly and rapid, hissing and shifting with aggression, though she had no immediate sense of what had its attention just yet.

Another movement of rock, a crack and a hiss of water forming a spray; shapes moved in the darkness as something lashed out from the damaged cavern-side and the insect creature leaped back and then darted in again. Tera could sense that there was something large on the other side of the cavern wall, from the tremors of the limb it had thrust through the rocks, but it was hard to get any further sense of it than that; it wasn't open air or ground on the other side of the rock.

Amidst this apparent conflict, more rocks spilled down or broke off, and the hiss of water became a more pronounced gurgle. Small splashing sounds, like writhing eels in mud circled the damaged section, moving in random patterns about the floor. Two shapes, small, compared to the goliaths that seemed to be in conflict above and around them.

Suddenly, a glint of light lit the cavern chamber for a moment; Terra got a clear glimpse of a data crystal, shedding blue light, as it was pulled from the wall by what looked like a metool with a gun muzzle instead of its normal tool of choice. She'd not sensed the critter earlier because it seemed to be riding on another virus that was supporting it easily as it hovered in the air, about two thirds to the top of the cavern. The met seemed pleased with its find, but also acutely aware, a moment later, of the attention that this had drawn. It tapped one foot on its companion's head and the hovering virus turned, both fists spinning one to deflect a long, thick tentacle that was reaching out from the cracked wall towards it, before humming away at high speed down the passage away from Terra.

The tentacle drew back, and then a solid thump resounded through the walls of the cavern. the rock wall breached slightly, and large chunks of stone began to fall, until half the passage had been obscured. The glint of light was mostly cut off by the rubble, though in the last glimpses of it, Terra could see a large, shaggy shape further down, just now standing up on its hid legs and roaring to swap at the fleeing virus pair. Nearer to her, a faint giggle alerted her to a spooky that was watching, but now waved its tongue at Terra instead, and she caught glimpse of a worm virus, pallid in colour, with blind eyes, hanging from a slender silken cord, from the ceiling. The aggressive insect virus turned wildly, setting its sights on a new target now, seemingly indiscriminate in its anger, and began to rush at Terra instead.

-=Battle 16, Begin!=-
The nagging feeling of her being possibly trailed by the assassin twins still lingered, but the massive presence that she felt from the primal beast overpowered it by just a hair. The tunnels that she passed through felt alive -- more so than the usual. The life she had felt through the ground on normal territory could be compared to the faint warmth emitted from an animal at rest, but what she felt now was more akin to heated breathing, feeling the pressure draw itself in and out. The air felt sticky and humid, and she unconsciously tightened and loosened her fists periodically. Darkness ruled now, this deep into the earth, as the only points of light came from some faint shining material that seemed to twinkle from the ceiling. Nothing but the quiet drip of water and the crackle of Terra's footsteps against the wet soil could be heard.

"Hey, Terra," said Scarlet, breaking the silence.
"... Yes?"

"Did you really mean it when you said you didn't know what you were going to do when you meet that... whatever that thing was?"

A small pause. "... I'm not sure myself. All I know is that my curiosity won't let me rest until I meet it again, to see it again with my own eyes. I'm sorry if I'm being selfish and worrying you."

"You sure are! That last fight really scared me, you know!" scolded Scarlet, her voice cracking slightly, as she took a moment to catch her breath. "Still, I trust you not to do anything life-threatening. You've got a good head on your shoulders, right?"

In the inky darkness, unknown to anyone, Terra's eyes widened, and she tightened her fist even harder than before, with her fingertips digging into the palm of her gloves. "... Thank you, Scarlet. I'll try to earn that trust."

Then, all of a sudden, a sound other than the background noise that she had been hearing. Terra tensed up, as two large shapes registered on her senses. Something was nearby, and it was not happy. From what she was able to make out with the faint luminescence around her, one of them was some huge insect, though the other was still indeterminate. What she could be confident of, however, was that they were likely to not be anything as sentient as Navis, probably merely viruses.

"... Viruses."
"I can't see anything. Do you need any chips?" responded Scarlet immediately, her fingers hovering over her folder's chip icons.

"... Wait, not yet," said Terra, as she kept both of her sets of "eyes" open, scanning through the deep cavern to discern the extent of the battlefield further. The trails of water coursing through the earth flowed like the bloodstreams through a living being, and as she tuned into it, it was almost as if she was being absorbed into that living being, her heart beating in sync with the earth. Following through its little capillaries of life like a salmon returning to its breeding ground, Terra waited for a moment, until a sparkle of light broke through the deep darkness. A blue mystery data crystal, being carried off by a Metool and an odd-looking floating platform; the fact that none of them touched the ground explained why she hadn't managed to sense them earlier. With the two bigger viruses' feuds, however, more viruses began to appear here and there, and Terra quickly found herself facing a lot more enemies.

Terra's eyes gleamed for a moment as she made her decision, and she crouched slightly before disappearing into the ether. Immediately, she appeared next to the fleeing viruses, her blue-green eyes still radiating a dim light. Briefly suspended in midair, Terra reached out for the crystal before she punched forward with a twist of her upper body. The air in front of her fist exploded towards the floating platform, aiming to precisely blast it away along with its rider, and claim their treasure for herself.

Then, curling up her body to protect her ill-gotten booty, she rapidly transformed her body into stone, increasing her density several fold. Terra landed with a thump, and a loud rumble started soon after beneath her. In the dark cavern, the earth split open as a gush of water flowed in, and a gleaming blue light began to swirl about the statue-like Terra. As if providing a divine blessing, the spiral of light protected Terra, and began to patch up her earlier wounds further.

Even though Terra couldn't see much of anything clearly in the low light, and her affinity with the ground was only giving her a small amount of extra detail, the blue sparkling light of the data crystal being carried off was hard to ignore. Her fist action was to warp immediately to cut off its escape, just as the seemingly irate scuttling virus unleashed a blast of freezing spray towards her. It froze over the ground where she had just been, but Terra was already long gone.

Instead, she appeared in the air, further down the tunnel, at just the right height to deliver a concussive burst to the fleeting platform virus and send it careening backwards. Both the floating virus, and its metool passenger took shots at her as she appeared, but while the wider spread of bolts from the carrier let one connect with her, the unstable spinning of its ride left the metool firing off into the darkness wildly.

The mystery data hung in the air for a moment, but as Terra reached to claim it, hers weren't the only pair of hands grabbing for the prize. From the darkness below, even as she and the crystal fell, a set of massive bear claws snatched out to try and grab the crystal as well, and a growling filled Terra's ears. Fortune and speed were with her, however, and Terra managed to grab the crystal and slip between the claws to the ground, while they clutched at air. The soft feeling of fuzz at her back as she landed might have been comforting, if it didn't belong to a massive, angry teddy virus. Terra's own quick response was to protect her rescued prize and harden her body against further harm for the time being.

Before any of the other viruses could act further, the heavy thumping from the other side of the cavern wall gave way to a deed crash, and a sudden explosion of rushing water that filled the cavern up to Terra's waist. A very large gelatinous shape, about the same size as the huge, scuttling creature, burst into the area, bringing what seemed like half a sea with it as it did. Most of the viruses floated about the water, but it crashed around Terra's solid form, and also buffeted the teddy virus behind her, and the other behemoth virus. Both were driven backwards by the force of the water, but for a brief moment there was the image of a protective field about the scuttling one that parted the flood of water around its form.

Caught up in her own planning for the time Being, Terra had just been readying to change the floor of the cavern to sea herself, and it now proved unnecessary, but even so, she was able to spread her own influence through the freshly converted ground; the freshly flooded floor wasn't going anywhere now. While this was going on, the two mudfeesh had been happily washed about by the currents, seeming to flow with them and not take any harm. They seemed quite happy about the development, as far as such amiably dopey creatures could be, and splashed up alongside Terra, attempting to coat her in an extra thick layer of mud. They both scrubbed up against her hardened form, messing her thoroughly, before the terrain expert restored her defences and pushed them away again.

The barrier came up just in time to block a heavy chunk of ice launched at her by the increasingly furious meta-virus with all the legs. A moment later, and the attack might have dealt serious damaged to her stone form; as it was, the chunk was heavy enough to dash her barrier, despite the elemental alignment. Safe, and still protected behind her remaining armour, Terra held the data crystal close while she healed herself. She had to turn to cover the prize from the appreciative licks of the spooky, and the Tsunami that had broken through the wall took the opportunity to pelt her with a stream of bubbles that managed to leave a minimal amount of scoring across her body, before the stone hardness faded back to normal. The worm virus had whisked up and away on its silken thread, somewhere, but it would no doubt make itself known again in a moment.

With her body now returned mostly to its regular state, Terra was more vulnerable to the viruses around her, and she took preemptive measures, with her defenses giving off a faint glow in the darkness. The water splashed about beneath her feet as she tried to distance herself slightly from the grappling bear virus, which had almost stolen away her ill-gotten goods. She had to clear out the viruses before she could access the crystal, though one obstacle still stood in front of that path.

"What did you do, Terra? I can't see anything still," complained Scarlet, still blind to the situation.

"... Hm, that's a problem. I can try something; could you send me the PanelGrab?"

"Sure, hang on."

As Scarlet sent in her Navi's request, Terra's body lit up, and the chip fused into her skin into the circuitry that had been established through her body previously. Then, a series of high-frequency vibrations burst out from her body and spread throughout the cave. While the vibrations were soundless, every virus there would certainly be able to feel it, as Terra was able to receive feedback from all of the viruses present in the cave, compounded on top of her original observations. The feedback was funneled back into Scarlet's screen, showing up as a wireframe over everything. The first thing Scarlet noticed were the two huge viruses taking up about a third of the screen, one of which had a relatively high HP count.

"Much better... but that doesn't look good," said Scarlet. The virus's design vaguely reminded her of something, but she couldn't quite place her finger on it. Slotting in a few more chips, she gave some general directions as well. "Alright, let's try to take that thing out first, maybe take out the others as collateral."

"... Okay," said Terra. The waters underneath her feet then lit up, as if a lamp had been turned on somewhere underneath it. The light quickly vanished, before the crackling sound of electrical discharge burst forth from underneath the Scuttle, giving it a small warning period before the crackle turned into a thunderclap. The attack seemed to have started off a chain reaction as well, as the waters that had flooded the cavern began to swell rapidly. Sounds of rolling thunder began to echo throughout the area as the scenery transformed into a stormy underground sea, with powerful rolling waves crashing into everything without discrimination. Even the cavern itself started to shake as well, the rocky ground underneath the waters cracking open and threatening to swallow anything that came through.

At the center of it all, the waters calmly swirled around Terra, her body being the only safe haven in the weather anomaly that was occurring as she clutched the mystery data crystal in her arms tightly to protect it against the mayhem that she had caused.

Prize in hand, Terra was ready to light up the field and clear out the rubble and rubbish. She was quick to restore her protectives amidst the waist-deep water, ducking low as the many-legged virus furiously blasted a jet of frigid water at her. The clinging mud from the two messy fish clung to her and dragged in the water, though, and her efforts to duck away from other viruses was less effective than she might have hoped.

The Tsunami blew a stream of bubbles her way; it was an attack she'd seen before though, and they only managed to weaken her barrier slightly, no more. Still far too close to her for comfort, the Teddy lunged, growling through the wash of tidal water, and managed to wrap its paws around her before she could out distance it. With a heave, the giant bear lifted her up, collapsing the rest of her barrier so it could hold her properly in its claws, and hurled her across the tunnel, to crash solidly into the airborne Metool that had just ducked under its helmet with a startled 'Meep!' The collision left some substantial damage in her armour, and knocked the NeoMet off its perch, to splash down beside her in the water. It dragged itself out onto the rubble pile in a hurry, ducking under its hat and shivering wetly.

The CrazyRazy righted itself after a moment, spinning around once, then sent a trio of beams out to its allies, lending them further strength. In this case, its allies were apparently only itself, the NeoMet, and more begrudgingly the Spooky virus that was hovering up and a little further away from the brawl as stealthily as it could.

Terra, on the other hand, was just getting started; the major part of her next attack lanced out towards the Scuttling meta-virus, blasting it with an amplified bolt that blew through its aura and made it screech and scream loudly enough to shake dust from the ceiling of the cavern. Vaporised smoke rose from its body as it staggered towards her, still seething with fight and the need to kill the thing that had just harmed it so badly. With a sweeping motion, it blasted a solid chunk of ice back at her, which slammed into Terra's midsection and knocked the wind from her. Her casing crumbled away, having done its duty and protected her from the hit, but it still smarted.

From the shadows, high up above Terra herself, a small line of dark energy zipped down, surrounding the enraged virus and soothing some of its electrical burns, though if it was grateful to the Spooky for aid, it certainly gave no sign of the fact. Terra's next assault was an effort to finish off the hostile meta, but while her wave crashed into it, the water didn't do as much damage as she'd have hoped, and between that and the Spooky's interference, the many-legged foe remained, churning the water around it in fury. The wave had the side effect of washing many other viruses on the field clean away, too, though the great Tsunami merely floated up over the wave peacefully and seemed unaffected this time. It blew another stream of bubbles at Terra, and with no more defences, these ones stung slightly as they burst against her body.

Her final attempt, with a more solid ground wave, pushed the Tsunami up against the rock wall and seemed to do some decent harm to it, and finally toppled the seething Scuttle as well. Other than the jellyfish meta, however, the Spooky remained, and the worm virus still hadn't shown itself from the ceiling of the cave, almost as though it was afraid to come down. Who could blame it? The mudfeesh had been reduced to junk data somewhere along the way, so Terra would receive no more muddy snuggles from them, and the poor metool had been washed away along with the rubble pile it had tried to shelter on.

With the area mostly cleared of the tougher enemies, Terra was free to survey the battlefield with a more leisurely stance. "... That was a good call, Scarlet," said Terra, surveying the broken-up remains of the Scuttle virus. Its previous attack didn't do much to hurt her thanks to her defenses, but she could still feel the power behind it.

"Thanks! Let's try to finish this now. You need to heal up too," said Scarlet, selecting a few of her chips as Terra looked up at the Spooky hovering over her. Behind her, a small array of needle-point swirls appeared in the water, making no big indication of their existence except for the nearly imperceptible sound of water rushing inwards. Then, it spat itself out in the form of a salvo of thin watery bursts. The release was fairly slow, however, and a more observant Spooky would easily be able to dodge it, but Terra was banking on it being distracted by her gaze instead, while she protected herself with her own double-layered defenses as usual.

With that particular enemy settled, Terra turned her attention to the Bagworm far above. "... Scarlet, could you send the Pickpocket over too?" she said. Scarlet traced Terra's line of sight to the virus she was looking at, and nodded to herself in approval. Soon after, Terra was raising her free hand towards the pinecone lookalike virus, relegating her other hand to protecting the Mystery Data crystal she was making off with. She then clenched her fist as hard as she could, causing the rocky casing around her arm to expand outwards rapidly into a barrel shape. Peeking out of its exit, the familiar eyepatch-wearing Bandcoon looked down at Terra and squeaked in greeting, before saluting her and nestling into the barrel.

The barrel erupted loudly as it launched its payload, a rocky tank shell with the Bandcoon bravely riding it towards the ceiling. Whether it achieved its mission or not, Terra couldn't quite tell, as the cannon shot crashed into the ceiling, and caused a great deal of dust and gravel to form an earthy cloud that obscured her briefly enhanced senses. She was already preparing the third round of her attacks as well, as the knee-high water around her parted in a circle around her, accompanied by a phantom wind. The earth that had been under the water was replaced by shiny metal paneling, emitting brief sparks of electricity here and there as the water swirled about.

The sparks rapidly became stronger and more violent as the parted water raged around. The titanic Jelly-based virus would feel a small pull towards the geomantic Navi, and the sparks developed into full on lightning arcs. While the localized storm blew Terra's hair around wildly, the lightning flashes concentrated into three spots, before they launched themselves at lightspeed towards the Tsunami virus, which would only barely be able to withstand only one, let alone two.

Foes mostly dispatched, Terra set to work cleaning up the remainder that she could still see, starting with the Spooky that had been attempting to heal its allies during the fight. Slow as the swarm of watering darts were, Terra's luck was in and the ghost virus didn't notice them until it was too late for it to escape being swarmed and rapidly shredded and drained. The return of energy to Terra accompanied the renewal of her defences.

As she sorted this out, the worm virus that had been absent all this time, dropped down on its silken thread again, checking to see if the coast was clear before calling up a spire attack through the waist-deep water to try and skewer the navi that was rocking the cavern so badly. While the assault connected, it was mostly stopped by the outermost layer of her defences, with no further effect. If Terra glanced up at it, she'd be able to see that the worm now sported a whirling mass of protective leaves that spun about its cocoon. too; it must have put the shield up while it was hiding away in the ceiling.

The Tsunami continued trying to overwhelm Terra with its rapid series of water jets, but her casing , aligned to the water as it was, wasn't too badly affected by the weak attacks; the Metavirus would need to try something harder than that to really make a dent on her. Terra herself was more interested in her efforts to deal with the worm virus that had skipped out on most of the fight so far. when she launched her attack, her bandcoon ally struck first, scrabbling to hold on as it scrambled about the virus and beginning to jump and grab at the various leaves that swirled about it. The impact from the cannon shell itself shook the worm on its slender thread, and sent it rocking back and forth wildly, and before long its furry passenger lost his grip and dropped back to the water, though it seemed to have gotten a good quantity of the leaves, which it had stuffed gleefully in its mouth for the swim back to Terra.

A moment later, the ground rumbled again, and the wading levels of water were usurped by a broad expanse of solid metal plating. The Tsunami was very unhappy with this development, floundering on the steel for a moment before erupting with a rushing thump of water that re-covered the ground. Under normal circumstances, the virus might have been able to easily right itself again, with fresh sea flooding in, but in this particular case, the water drained off again as quickly as it had come, and the metal endured, Terra's own force of will on the ground too strong for it to shift. Before he giant jelly virus could decide what to do next, Terra unleashed and electrical wind storm on it, the arcing bolts leaping back and forth and amplifying themselves to an almost terrifying degree, and leaving very little behind, save a few charred and melting chunks of jelly.

The Bagworm had just about stopped swaying from the blast that had stripped off its shield, and with a glance at Terra, squeaked, and looked as though it was about to climb its thread again and leave this particular lost cause well enough alone. The bandcoon, now on solid footing again, but still decidedly soaked from the water, sat up to present Terra with a very large mouthful of wet and slightly slimy leaves. She wouldn't be able to tell right away if there was enough there to make a chip out of, or if it would just serve as raw value, but she'd be able to inspect it properly in a moment or two, most likely.

"Good work, Terra. One more left."

Terra returned the praise from her operator by wordlessly flashing a thumbs up. However, as she stared up at the lone remaining virus and heard its terrified squeak, she proceeded to ignore it instead and crouched down to pat the very much soaked Bandcoon. The little critter shook its body rapidly to dry itself off, providing Terra with an impromptu shower. Fortunately, the water splashed off of her barrier, which she had managed to get up just in time. The result was a very overfluffed raccoon virus spitting out the leaves it had gathered onto the metal flooring, which elicited an amused giggle from the Navi.

Scarlet watched the scene, giggling slightly herself. The remaining virus seemed to be fleeing well enough on its own already, though she still had to confirm. "Are you leaving that one alone?"

"... Yes," nodded Terra, as she gave the pinecone virus one last glance before she took out the mystery data crystal in her arms and set it down on the floor. She then tapped on its top end, giving it the command to decrypt its contents to find out what kind of treasures it held, if any.

[Allow Bagworm to escape, check Pickpocket and BMD.]
Letting the remaining virus flee for its continued existence, Terra turned her attention to the battle spoils, and to her little friend's efforts. As it turned out, there were just enough pieces of leaf matter for Terra to successfully reconstitute some viable chip data from it, and as an added bonus the mystery data was also safe to open. All together, the battle spoils weren't half bad.

"LeafShield... That's going to be useful. Stay safe, Terra," said Scarlet, as she sorted through the chips that came in, opening a BBS post on the side as well. The wireframe that had covered everything began to fade, and the screen that she had to observe Terra was once again overtaken by darkness. All she could do was listen to the sound of Terra's footsteps echoing through the caverns, and pray for her safety as her Navi forged onwards, adamant in her quest to explore the depths of the network in search of the elusive beast.

[Z > 3745, BF > 750, ExF > 10.]
[Battle 17 - Ready.]
[Terra.EXE: 170 HP.]
The heavy, warm air that moved back and forth through the intricate cave network continued to make long, sighing susurrations as Terra moved past the scene of destruction she had crated and pressed forward after the growing sense of the great beast she was trailing. It still felt faint and far off, but it was clearer to her senses now, and it was definitely waiting. The dampness in the air gradually began to fade the further she walked, and, oddly, all of the various branches of the tunnels and splitting forks in the passageway she was moving through all began to trend upwards gain, to varying degrees. If she was reaching out to sense it, the unbearable weight of water all around and above was gradually passing behind her.

The earth softened beneath her feet again, turning from hard stone to thick mud and soil, and eventually, signs of that same verdant moss that she had seen before, when she'd been closer to the colossal beast. The gradual upward incline flattened out for a time, and the sounds of the air moving around her began to carry more discordant notes with it. Thumps and crashes, shrieks from large monsters and viruses, intermixed with shuffling, heavy steps and impacts. Eventually, as the sounds grew larger, Terra found herself stepping out into a broad cavern space, with a high ceiling, and many raised steps unevenly spread across the ground. Some were platforms small enough for her to step up onto, others rose several of her own body height, in sheep, slanted blocks, as though they'd been forced upwards.

The sounds of conflict were loud here, and through the dimly lit gloom, Terra could see massive shapes moving about each other, darting in and out, rushing and striking. Occasional flashes of fire, of lightning, thunderous impacts of massive weights hitting the earth. It was hard to see details; between the low light and the obscuring, uneven terrain, but at least one of the shapes was almost certainly another of those many-legged scuttling viruses... though this one looked to have more yellowish overtones, in the brief flashes of light. Another of the titanic viruses looked to have a mostly humanoid upper torso, but was moving on a more ambulatory single base, as far as she could glimpse in the gloom. It bore weapons for arms that seemed to spit fire at regular intervals.

There were other shapes in the dark, but they were hard for her to identify immediately. Her senses told her where most of them were; one was in a strip of shallow water, off to her left. Another had burst up from the soil a short way directly behind her. there was a third very large entity, further back into the cavern, and a fourth, long, thin one somewhere in the middle too. It was then, also, that Terra realised that the conflict that was going on seemed to have baked and cracked the ground here, and it wouldn't respond to her usual defences directly without at least some amount of rejuvenation first.

Before she could think about much else, the long, thin creature slithered forward over one ledge and down to the ground, rushing towards her, and she was able to see that the virus that had been a shape to her senses before was indeed a large anaconda virus, coming her way. A giggling laugh from the dark overhead was the only other warning Terra had, before she felt all three of the much larger viral shapes break off from their conflict and turn in her direction.

The virus is able to defend against attacks from up to two directions at a time by positioning the 3 parts of its body in various formations. Any Non-AoE or Non-Phasing attack that hits a body segment is completely stopped, and has no effect whatsoever. Attacks with area effect can still hit the head even if they strike the body first, and phasing attacks pass right through the body as if it were made of objects. Terrain is a series of uneven ledges of various elevations, with flat tops, but slanted angles. Treating Terra's start point as ground level, a square platform is forward and left of her, raised more than a body-length above her head on the high side, and about her own height on the low side, with sheer sides, and sloping inwards towards the centre. A longer, L-shaped platform occupies much of the right side of the cave, tilted away from Terra, her own height at the high point, and close to ground level at the far end. A third, ovular section thrusts up from the back centre of the area, about two body heights in total, and tilted only slightly towards Terra. Other minor obstructions make the floor uneven and awkward to travel over easily, but aren't severe enough to note.

-=Battle 17, Start!=-
Traversing through the tunnels, it didn't take long for Terra to realize that she was no longer on level surface or descending, but walking upwards now. While the pressure of being so far underground was gradually seeping away, she was still quite far down, and a different pressure lingered about now. She began to notice disturbances in the air amidst the quiet echo of her crackling footsteps, which eventually turned into faint noises in the distance. Even so, she wasn't distracted by the newer noises, not while she was still hot on the trail of the beast. If it was more viruses like the rest, all she had to do was wash over them and proceed. However, if it was another encounter like before, she had to hedge her bets and try to find another way around. Without Carbide, she was still lacking in combat strength.

"What's that noise?" said Scarlet, finally picking up on the distant noise after it became loud enough to be perceived through her PET's speakers.

"Sounds like a party's cooking up," commented Luke, peeking in from the side.

"... More viruses, most likely," reported Terra, as the noise became more distinct. Crashes, shrieks, impacts, all signs of a fight. Her steps became more wary, and she found herself approaching slower than usual. Eventually, the path she was taking opened up into a huge cavern, and she was able to properly scan the area. From what she could see, all of them emitted viral signatures, and none of them gave off the feeling of a truly sentient Hikari AI. Even better, was that the area was relatively open. While she wouldn't be able to sense the airborne ones, that could be resolved later.

"... Scarlet, the usual."

"Got it."

Closing her eyes, she put her palms together and began to concentrate. The hardened soil began to light up as dim streams of energy began to swirl about into her body like a funnel. Her body began to harden rapidly, starting from her arms all the way down her body, and the circuitry that had engraved itself into her body revealed itself once again. The ground began to crack open, and red-hot molten earth seeped out at a rapid pace, eventually creating a pool of magma around the hardened statue of the geomancer. Red lines snaked through her body, and an aura of crimson light protected her, while an extra layer of stone formed around her body itself. With her defenses formed, the red lines thinned out and spread near-instantly throughout the cavern, before disappearing, giving Terra a relatively decent layout of where the viruses lay.

The ground began to shake once more as the cracks in the earth quickly expanded its area to span the entire cavern, with boiling heat and gleaming magma peeking through. Then, without warning, as if the event had been building up for many years, the artificial volcano unleashed its terror, expelling wave upon wave of superheated rock. Thrice did the earth eject its contents, before the lava sank back into the cracks and closed back up, as if they had never existed. However, what the creatures above turned out as still remained to be seen.

With her senses revealing a chamber full of fearsome bests, Terra was quick to firm up her defences and prepare to clear out as much of the field as she could with a few waves. While she was readying herself, however, the shelled virus to the side retreated into its protective covering, and the worm virus far above whisked itself away into the higher reaches of the cave... was it the same one she'd let go before? It was hard to tell...

The mushroom virus behind her was very suddenly much closer, nuzzling right up to her at the edge of the soft soil before expelling a virulent cloud of spores. Fortunately, Terra was able to avoid breathing in the fumes, and it had no effect on her. Far off, the over-sized chess piece gathered itself, then leapt high into the air, fading into the darkness above while the two closer titans bother turned to look at the new arrival with obvious malice in their stances. The one on the raised left platform didn't move towards her just yet, but the four floating options around its upper torso all turned their bases towards her and launched a salvo of small fire bolts.

It was only a probing attack, and didn't manage to do much on its own, fortunately; between the sudden out-surging of magma across the ground floor, and Terra's own protectives, the three darts of fire that were on target merely crashed against her barrier without punching through. From where she was standing, Terra answered with her first wave of lava, though it wasn't able to quite crest up to the ledges that several of the viruses were on; it coursed across the ground level and carried part way up some of the sloped edges, but couldn't directly scale the bluff straight edges that it met, funnelling instead across the rest of the cavern.

The snake that was rushing towards Terra was washed over by the lava, and no positioning of its many body segments could protect it enough from the fierce burning. By some fluke of timing and position, the mushroom virus behind her avoided the main burn, though it clearly wasn't happy about the molten rock suddenly beneath its roots. The only aquatic virus on the scene was safe in its shell, and her wave couldn't reach anything else, where they currently were.

On the bright side, the many-legged meta virus decided that Terra herself might be a bigger threat, and with a screech, flung itself from its own raised ledge to land in front of her and blast a wave of electrical energy that would have been quite dangerous, had it not simply scattered off the remnants of her outer-most protective barrier. Amusingly, her body also blocked the Mushroom virus behind from being obliterated by the attack, but Terra's second wave incinerated it before the squishy little thing could thank her. It also put paid to the anaconda before it could manage to attack her itself, and as it washed around the scuttling virus, she could see the lava wave split first, then wear all the way through the protective aura that it bore.

The momentary victory was answered by the one that looked like a souped up cirkill launching one of its option bits at Terra directly, still form high on its ledge. The bit struck her with what felt like a brutal amount of burning, breaking force, flames licking everywhere as it collided, but thankfully her second layer of armour was enough to absorb the impact. The bit hastily retracted back to the main virus before her next wave could catch it, but less fortunate was the Knight virus which had landed just a moment before the third ripple launched. It wasn't close enough to catch Terra in its crash down, but her wave was certainly wide-spread enough to hammer the bronzewood piece, dealing a surprisingly devastating amount of damage to it.

The Scuttler leapt back just enough to avoid the wave as it rolled out, before launching a dense, heavy ball of electricity back at Terra with another screeching roar. This one connected with her hardened body and the solid resistance did her no favours, amplifying the crushing power of the bolt to a nasty level (-120). As the lava wave faded away, a small giggle from somewhere above, in the dark, was followed by a purple trail of energy feeding itself to the scorched chess piece, which then restored its leafy barrier. The ground continued to rumble slightly from where it had crashed down, but already the virus was looking as though it was preparing to gather itself for another jump. Nearby, the electrical virus crackled as its aura reasserted itself.

15% Broken [Two long strips about halfway across the area]

As the stony exterior of her body faded into her original human self, Terra stumbled slightly, clutching her flank as she did so. The Scuttler's bolt attack had dealt a good deal of internal damage to her, while she proceeded to absorb energy from the ground in order to patch herself up and execute her defenses. Slabs of rock slid into place as they clicked and fused together while Terra caught her breath and surveyed the area. While her attack had usually been relatively effective against most of her enemies, the presence of multi-tiered terrain here was detrimental to its effectiveness, not to mention the few viruses that were in the air.

"... Any ideas, Scarlet?"

Scarlet's brow furrowed as she scanned the list of viruses detected on her screen. "Need to take out that yellow bug virus first. You've taken a lot of damage; even considering that you took an extra beating from your stone form, it's got a lot of punch to it. Some of the fliers need to be put down, too, so I'll send you something for that."

"... Understood," said Terra, as she quickly received her operator's battlechips, and activated the first of three. High in the air, all the way up in the cavern's ceiling, water began to drip down. However, it never reached the ground, and the water was caught in an invisible catchment that began to fill up as the dripping rapidly accelerated. Soon, three blobs of clear water were gathered high above. Linked to Terra's consciousness, they were suspended in mid-air, before her mental command allowed them to fall down towards three of the viruses.

"Take cover from that gunner," warned Scarlet.

Terra nodded, and crouched slightly onto the lava, before her body was consumed by a red light, fusing with the molten rock and rushing past the Scuttler in front of her. She reappeared moments later slightly off to the side, underneath the platform where the RapidFire virus was stationed. Thrusting her hand forward and grabbing her wrist with the other hand, she activated the two remaining chips. Her palm lit up with an emerald light as a roar reverberated about the cavern. Not long after, a translucent serpentine dragon reared its head from her hand, and rushed forward in a spiral, crushing all in its path towards the Scuttler virus, even tossing up some large chunks of earth in its wake that would undoubtedly also cause a not-insignificant amount of damage to anything that they would hit.

Terra shook off the assault she had taken and revised her strategy quickly while her defences reformed and she drew in the energy needed to heal some of her injuries. These were not the first greatly oversized viruses she'd fought, but the combination of their elements together, and the difficult terrain was making this a much more challenging engagement than it first appeared. True to its name, even as Terra took a short breath to restore herself, the RapidFire virus sent another volley of small flame shots streaking towards her. They splashed off her newly formed flame-aligned barrier just moments after the protective had stabilised, and if Terra's attention was drawn by the relentless stream of attacks, two more coming in from the side suddenly, courtesy of the now opened Shell virus, were enough to scatter the ethereal field again.

The onslaught might have thrown Terra's next efforts off sightly as she sought to control and then bring down her next attack from above; the immobile ShellGeek, on the ground, took the full effect of the water pulse meant for it, swiftly destroyed as the water flash-steamed against the lava beneath. Despite the lack of extra warning, however, the Spooky virus avoided the one directed its way, and the RapidFire was moving about on its platform in small ways just enough to avoid the falling attack.

The large, bronze-wood chess piece was gathering itself again, further across the field, but the rumbling in the ground from its previous landing hadn't yet subsided, and in an unannounced burst, several thick spires of jagged stone thrust themselves up out of the ground from where Terra had been standing just a split second before. Terra had, in fact, disappeared from the spot just as the lava burst open, escaping harm with her timely teleport, to a safer-seeming location where fewer of the viruses on the field could easily see her.

There was not time to catch her bearing though, as the worm virus, until now hidden high in the ceiling of the cavern, dropped down on a slender thread and moved in a way that seemed to be some kind of effort. A moment later another spire-like attack shot up from the ground and though the elementalist twisted away from the wooden pillar, it still managed to shear through her second layer of protection as it rose. If this really was the same one from before, it didn't appear to have cherished her mercy over much.

Unable to see exactly where Terra was, the scuttling virus used one of its other tricks, and attempted to call down a bolt of electricity form the roof of the cavern, guessing her location, but its aim wasn't quite accurate enough; the bolt split the freshly made wooden spire, but Terra herself had managed to step aside from it already. Her response came swift and loud, in the form of a raging forest dragon that curled up over the ledge, and driving through the RapidFire, before sliding back down the far side and slamming the rest of its force into the electrical meta-virus. It gave a pains screech and a series of wrathful hisses, but couldn't do anything to attack the offending dragon before it ran its course and faded away.

Up above, the RapidFire had taken the hit as well, but its Aura had worn the brunt of it, collapsing, and yet sparing the virus itself from harm. It shifted quickly to Terra's edge of the ledge it was on, trying to get a proper lock on her, and when the angle proved difficult, instead released a long, broad flame-thrower that scorched over the edge and down the wall. Fierce as the scorching fire was, it might have been disastrous for Terra, right at the moment, but by good fortune and a desperate evasion, the flame jet didn't quite manage to reach her. it scorched at the grass, as well, but that proved just a bit too freshly virulent, under Terra's protection, to burn up right away.

Above, another small giggle heralded another slim purple trail of dark energy the fad its way to the badly damaged scuttle meta, repairing a small amount of the devastating damage the dragon had wrought, and the Scuttle, twitching and scanning for its target screeched in frustration when it couldn't' see her. Terra answered its distress with a double volley of grassy masses, sent hurtling in its direction under her power. The solid was already shaken from the RapidFire's attack, and when she pulled the clumps loose, they left a sloped ramp between her position and the upper ledge. More importantly, the two projectiles sought out their target, but the first one slammed down into the lava as the virus itself leapt up and back, dodging out of the way as it returned to its higher vantage point on the l-shaped ledge, trying to find its new prey. The second shot tracked with it, and slammed home more accurately, pulled another infuriated shriek from the virus, but unfortunately for Terra it was still standing, and a moment alter both its electrical aura, and the burning one around the Rapidfire reformed themselves. At some point during this exchange, the Knight Metavirus had leapt upwards again, almost out of sight near the top of the cavern, and left behind a rather suspicious looking patch of soil where it had been.

Having avoided certain death from the bursts of flame expelled by the RapidFire as well as the pincer attack from the Bagworm, Terra stopped for a moment to catch her breath, and surveyed the area. From her lower vantage point, she could see a few of her attacks had severely weakened the bigger viruses, but none of them had been deleted except for one lone Shellgeek off in the corner. As her defenses re-established themselves, and she was once again enveloped in a sphere of red, a thumping noise suddenly rocked the cavern, and Terra spotted the Knightmare's enormous body hurtling itself into the air.

"Shoot it out of the sky!" said Scarlet, as she slotted in a few more chips for Terra. The green-clad Navi nodded, turning her attention skyward as she raised her hands to match. Lines of light snaked through her arms into her palms, as they glowed with a red and white light, fueled by the battlechips that had been supplied to her. However, as the MarkCannon's data was downloaded into her, the heightened awareness that it granted allowed Terra to notice the small, almost insignificant little Spooky near it.

"... I see you."

Adjusting her aim to match, she split the firepower between it and the Knightmare, releasing twin bursts of energy into the air with a resounding noise. Subtle trails of smoke hissed from between her fingers as she snuffed them out in her fists, and made herself slightly more scarce from the viruses' attacks. Molten rock splashed around her boots, their soles glowing red-hot as she hopped to the side from an attack, and resumed her focus on the Scuttler. It was badly damaged, perhaps only one attack away from deletion.

"... Send me the Rope, Scarlet," she requested.

"Got it," responded Scarlet. Little more than an unspoken internal confirmation was needed to activate the chip as it came in. Resonating with her command, the ground beneath the Scuttle virus would split open and spit out thick vines at her target. The summoned flora rapidly grew out of the ground, entangling any that it could find in its grasp and crushing them with its powerful binds. With those attacks sent out, Terra could now focus more on the others, keeping herself aware of any further counterattacks.

Moving more nimbly now, and seeking to avoid the worst of the powerful assaults directed her way, Terra began picking her shots more carefully with an aim to eliminating her most troublesome foes in a more certain manner. As she assessed, the RapidFire, above, shifted to the side, trying to get an angle on her down the freshly created ramp, and launched one of its hovering bits in another flaming, impactful drive. Caught in her planning, Terra did her best to duck away from the attack, but it still managed to crunch into her barrier field before retracting back to the virus. Despite being of an element that her barrier was equipped to handle, the assault was strong enough to collapse it immediately.

Even so, that was what her defences were for, after all, and it gave Terra the time to line up her shots carefully and snipe the tiny spooky that had been healing the other viruses with a clean shot that scrubbed it from the net, and focus then on the high-arching chess piece. The KnightMare was not presenting a difficult target, most prominently because it was rapidly growing larger, and larger in her field of vision. Before she could take the shot at the meta-virus, it slammed down onto the ground right where she had been aiming a moment before. Terra ducked away, avoiding its crushing landing, and then retaliated with a point blank blast of lava that incinerated the virus with a satisfying grade of thoroughness. Behind her, for who knew what reason, the dangling worm virus decided that this would be a good point in time to raise a similar, if smaller leafy barrier of its own... because that had worked out so well for the KnightMare, apparently.

Across the field, on the other raised ledge and still unable to see clearly what was going on, the Scuttle virus shrieked and tried again, dropping another bolt of lightning onto the area where Terra was. This one missed as well, and the aggressive attacker continued to make increasingly frustrated sounds of rage and violence. Closer, the retracting bit that the Rapidfire had launched had helped to tear open more of the earth on Terra's side of the platform, giving the virus clearer sight of her, while making the slim ramp up broader and easier to traverse. It backed off from the top of the ramp, gaining a little more distance while its options launched another volley of smaller fireballs at her.

Two of the four splashed against her fire-aligned armour, dealing minimal damage to it, but Terra was focused on the far threat still. It leapt down from its ledge and began scuttling across the gap towards where she was hidden at an alarming pace, electricity crackling over its body as it raged, but just before it could reach her to spray another cone of electrical breath her way, a series of viney growths lashed up from the ground to loop over it, bind its limbs and wrap about its massive form. The virus thrashed against them, shrieking louder as they crushed through its aura and tensed, pulling down and straining at each of its limbs. Something cracked and the virus screeched, in pain this time. Another sharp crack and one of the vines whipped free suddenly, coiled around a long leg that had torn loose. Other vines began to pull outward as the tortured cries of the virus dulled, until most of its limbs had been variously torn off by the reaching plants and the hulk went still, beginning to disintegrate. Two large targets down, one to go.

"Wow, that's gruesome," noted Luke, as the death throes of the Scuttler virus played through the PET's speakers. Scarlet paid the commentary no heed as she continued to feed chips to her PET through her screen interface, selecting the image of an Elemperor as well as a Nightmare in succession.

"Bagworm behind you next, then the last one," she relayed to Terra, while the ElementalRage chip began to infuse her with energy, and the red glow of her barrier crackled about her body. Terra cocked her head slightly to get the pinecone-riding virus at the edge of her peripheral vision before she swept out her arm in a wide arc to her side.

The red light of her barrier parted with her swipe, and rapidly coalesced within her hand until it ignited, creating a brilliant trail of explosive air. Then, with a flick of her fingers, the trail left her hand and soared through the air like the breath of a flamethrower towards the hapless leaf-encased virus.

Then, with the attack thrown out, she leapt forward and up, making her way towards the last and most dangerous of her enemies. As she did so, her body's figure began to melt and darken, until she was little more than a shadowy blob, darting up the ledge and leaving behind little bits of black residue. The residue suffused into the ground and cracked it open. From the cracks, a blackish liquid began to bubble and flow out, immediately coating the area where she had come from with it.
