Humor and you

This topic has been on my head for a small while. . . . The purpose of Humor for a character. You see, while I was on the chat I was thinking that my navi's antics may be hurting my Role playing stride. I'd like to see what people thoughts are of the nature of Humor to a person. . . . .
Back in the day, there was a navi. I believe Saloonman was his name. He was rp'ed brilliantly, full of whacky antics all the time.

Then he quit, and I was sad.

Anyways, as long as you like the humor, and it isn't hurting your rp style, then I think we have plenty of overly serious types. We could use a new saloonman.

*trips over flask and rushes past dnr, tackling a deadly met behind him in the process*
Hey! I was going to kill that with my Cannon!
Yes, we shall always keep Retrosmith in our hearts. <sniff>
So, as long as it's completely and utterly hilarious, it's fine.
*Raises flask* To Retro! He was the jester to my knight. The fall guy to my straight man. The...Funny guy as opposed to my serious character. He shall be missed.

As for you DNR, do what you like. If you feel that your Navi is a comedic character, then that is perfectly acceptable. However, keep in mind that using funny language and having oddball dialogue is no excuse for poor RP quality. Therefore, I expect you to increase your skills and master the art of the funny....Or else I shall kill you.
To be honest, if it's in-character, then the wacky-ness really works. But if I was to, say, make Hisai have a few jokey moments, then it'd just feel strange and forced. In my opinion, bein in-character adds to how enjoyable a post is.
Very early Druidman/Steve interactions had then shooting wise cracks back and forth with each other, but I later dropped that part of Druidman's personality, focusing more on his laid back attitude. Steve still isn't below making a stupid joke now and then, although Druidman would probably end up being confused with the punchline.
I don't think having a serious navi automatically precludes you from having humor in your posts. On the contrary, having a "serious" navi placed in a comical situation can be an enjoyable experience - even more so than if a happy-go-lucky navi were placed in a similar situation. If Brooding Badassman were to, for example, be jacked into a swanky Electown nightclub, hilarity would ensue. Just because your character has a one-track mind doesn't mean that you, as an RP'er must follow that... and it's always a fun little sidetrip to step outside your navi's comfort zones so you learn more about your characters, and maybe yourself in the process :P.

As for the purpose of humor in RP, I don't think there needs to be a specific purpose at all. It makes posts fun to read and helps add a bit of realism and color to the RP world - after all, the real world is filled with the colors of laughter and humor, so why not populate our own imaginary world with that sort of thing?

...of course, drama is also nice too.
Hell, American and Bo always had a bit of a zany antics relationship. Like that one time .... and then the other time .... Oh and the third time also. Use humor to your advantage, most mods don't read the wall of text. Unless you implement things that would make reading two pages from a book enjoyable.
Sky puts up a point that's pretty applicable to my own posts. Triggerman and Marlowe are nigh dead serious, yet I'll often make use of dark humour and stoic one lines to get across some semblance of comedy. Some of it revolves around the mutual sense of disrespect the navi and op have for each other.

It was also that contrast between a gravedigger personality and a happy-go-lucky character that allowed me to RP with Dimensionman well enough, back in the day.
That comfort zone idea always brings me back to when Runeknight fell face first into Persephone's tender bits. Stoic character + Uncomfortable situation = Funny.
I can do a bit of fun stuff with my characters when they're not in battle. Haven't taken much advantage of it yet, though.

And SaloonMan stood on a side while laughing.

I also remember the time with Soryu and Persephone that I was doing a mission Demonstar was modding for me. We had to 'clean' a server from viruses, but what he didn't tell me that it was from a porn site. It was still a funny situation with a Navi that's usually angry.

BULLSEYE.

Well. SOMEONE caught on. Lol.

Anyway, yeah this is my opinion in basic, cept that if you think it's taking away from your RP then it's not that great an idea.
Meh, i mainly have Timmy and Nikko make wisecracks at each other, mainly from the stuff that has happened, it will get more into their past as i get the sub-plot all ready for them, but other than that......they are a duo that cares for each other......under all of the wisecracks that they make at each other.
If it's not a tasteless joke involving babies, necrophilia, or some combination thereof, it's not funny.
Apparently Jaden doesn't like how Shadow is cold and merciless yet has to be taught not to look at Playnavi of they year...Humor is good in the right doses.
