Therapeutic Violence

((From ACDC))

MachMan's dark, angular form materialized on the floor of the network after crashing down in a beam of cyan light. His good eye scanned the field from beneath his opaque dark-cyan cockpit, which was followed by a buster-enabled right forearm and hand. This was a Chaos network, so he went in prepared to be dropped into a "hot LZ," so he was ready for battle from where he stood.

If the area was clear, the turbine engines embedded in his shoulders quickly spun up to full RPM as he got airborne with the help of his omnishoes NCP, then rocketed off in search for his first viral encounter.

((Ready for Battle #1))
The site Mach arrived in was dark, and occasional crackles of distorted energy lanced across the sky overhead, providing intermittent illumination into this dark corner of the deep forgotten nets. The coals beneath him were scalding hot, and there were signs of viruses all around his entry point. It looked to have once, long ago, been an old spring. There was a jagged path progressing forward, with broken segments and distorted turns, which he had not landed on properly, ending up just to one side in the coal pits that covered most of the ground. An archway just ahead on the path was broken down, its main cross beam lying at an angle over the path, and behind it the hulking shape of a very large Heavy that was already alerted to his arrival.

Aside the path, there were three pools of almost boiling onsen around him, two to the sides, just ahead, and a third directly behind where the path ended and he'd arrived. A statue about the height of a navi, dressed in traditional garb might once have been a representation of a shrine maiden or a spirit, but had now been defaced with a number of horns and tusks and claws, and made to look generally bestial in nature. It looked almost like an idol of worship, so deliberate were the alterations. Just behind the figure, in the steaming waters, a broad-lipped lark virus peeked its head out of the water, but a sudden hissing sound would draw his senses back forward to where an advanced and heavily armed marina-type virus was surfacing in the left pool, and something else was lurking forward, from behind where the up-ended broken half of an advertisement billboard had been wedged into the centre of the right pool. Another streak of corrupted data raced across the sky, temporarily lighting up the scene again. The viruses were restless, and Mach had better get to work.

HeaviestHeaviest (Heavy)

Heavy viruses move slowly, and only dodge when they attack. When a Heavy attacks, it teleports to a position to the left or right of the intended target, and proceeds to try to ram the target with a quick sideways motion. The number of times it will consecutively attempt to ram the target before teleporting back to its starting position depends entirely on the number of actions the virus has. Teleporting before and after the attack do not require an action. Movement and attacking are one and the same to this virus, thus even a non-attack collision with it is damaging.

-=Chaos Battle 1, Start!=-

The Navi entered a damaged, and equally hazardous area, which seemed almost appropriate in a pessimistic sense. Mach immediately rose above the coals, causing some of the glowing embers to swirl about his legs and body as he hovered. The embers seemed to be one of the few light sources in the dimly lit area, but his HUD provided a much clearer view of the terrain and viral contacts around him. As he thought, he landed directly into a battle just waiting to happen, so raised his energy shields and deployed two decoy drones before he identified his first target, then requested the chips needed to deal with said target. ["BigHammer and MeteorKnuckle!"] he commanded as he rocketed skyward, his engines roared and left a slightly brighter-glowing circle in the coals below his previous position. He pitched back as he climbed, to make him move back and over the shrine behind his previous position. The decoy drones that were left behind quickly assumed the holographic appearances of their master, and streaked towards the Heaviest with busters at the ready. Said decoys didn't immediately engage in close-quarters combat, but instead began to circle their target, with one or both occasionally diving towards it as if initiating a strafing run. ["On their way, FighterPlane and Knight inbound as well,"] Mazer responded, apparently looking to give Mach a numerical edge against the few, but very strong and dug in, viruses that surrounded his Navi.

Once he got clear of the shrine and gave himself room to intercept, his shoulders rocked down to angle his scramjet engines back down towards the ground and sent him careening towards the pool, and the Tark, below. His first chip was uploaded during his jet-assisted jump, prompting a hammer head, easily the width of a telephone pole but in a square cut, to materialize just ahead of him with a long metal handle attached. He quickly grabbed the handle with both hands, then swung the hammer down as he landed, in an attempt to deliver a crushing hammer blow directly on the Tark's position. Regardless if he hit or not, the resulting splash would've likely been quite a sight to see. Mach wouldn't have felt the warmth of the water that splashed against his heavily armored and/or prosthetic body parts, regardless he was focusing on other things.

The massive hammer disintegrated in a cloud of data and his program performed an automatic debug/refresh to deal with any systems issues, which prompted his right forearm and fist to sprout a pair of duplicate limbs, all arranged in a triangular formation like a trio of missiles ready for launch. Appropriately enough, Mach planned to use them as such after he steeled himself to boost away for the very likely counter attack; he swung his triplicate right fists towards the Tark, which he hopefully smashed with a giant hammer, then ripple fired two rocket-propelled fists towards the Tark at very close range. After his two rocket punches were successfully fired, he raised his right arm before he launched his third and final fist, which streaked off in a high arc in an attempt to hit the Heaviest, who was hopefully still distracted by the harassing decoys.

With the Tark hopefully destroyed, Mach hunkered down behind the shrine as he summoned the third and fourth chips. Two swarms of glowing data bits materialized nearby, which took only a second or so to reformat to their full forms. The first was a dark, angular twin-jet aircraft (like a slightly deformed Mach upper torso sans legs) which used every pound of thrust its two small engines could deliver to send it streaking up into cloudy, tumultuous sky. However, it didn't aim to stay there long; it gained altitude only to give itself enough airspace to set up a gun run against the dumb bell-shaped Heaviest virus. Its twin cannons barked loudly as it fired over a dozen super-sonic rounds down upon the virus's position.

The second swarm of data formed into a towering, nearly black angular statue, like a gigantic Knight chess piece. Its equine eyes began to glow red as it activated, and pivoted towards the Wavegear behind the broken billboard. Not a half second later, the entire thing blasted off in a high arc towards its target with some unseen means of propulsion. Regardless, it then attempted to crash down upon the virus with enough kinetic energy to not only deliver a crushing blow to its target, but also to rock everything within close proximity of its impact zone.

Not expecting his attacks to go unanswered, Mach activated his thrust reversers, which caused several panels to open half-way down his engine nacelles. He went to full throttle and caused his entire frame to lurch back and rapidly pick up speed. He alternated closing the outboard thrust reverser panels of his right and left nacelles, which caused him to zig-zag as he quickly flew backwards with a slight climb.

Raising his energy shields immediately, MachMan took to the skies, while the Tark virus began the offensive, spitting out one of its blue energy shots at him, which he barely avoided, along with a frighteningly powerful geyser that the Wavegear had summoned. The submarine virus to the left pool sank into the depths of the abandoned spring, and released an anchor-bearing bubble at him, which swerved past him in the skies. Just then, he took out the massive BigHammer his operator had provided him, and rushed back down into rear pool, slamming it into the Tark's flat body and dealing a critical amount of damage to it. His limbs then duplicated themselves into a series of kinetic missiles. Two of them bashed into the Tark's face and deleted it instantly, while the remaining one hit the Heaviest virus, which had been distracted by his clone drones.

Mach continued the assault, summoning a pair of assistants to help him out. One of them was a roaring fighter plane in the form of the AirRaid battlechip, which screamed out its bullets at the Heaviest, nearly deleting it with the bullets it had spat out. It angrily tried to shake it off, having realized that it had been duped by Mach's decoys, but it only served to destroy the nearby decrepit archway. The other was the Knight statue, which dropped down onto the Wavegear. It roared in anger as part of its body was crushed by the black chesspiece, releasing another geyser towards MachMan. Fortunately, he was able to absorb the blow with his energy shields, along with a couple more bubbles that the Mariner-type submarine had sent his way, as he backed off slightly with his thrusters.

The mostly successful assault left one less target on the battlefield, with Mach floating just over the still rippling onsen below. he urged over his comm channel with Mazer.

As Mazer moved to upload the requested chips in the same order they were named, Mach finally paused in the air once he got a clear shot at the Heaviest. He pointed his right arm and hand, which quickly transformed into its buster form, directly towards the dumbell-shaped virus. In the moment Mach took to line up his shot, two decoy drones materialized at his sides to replace their fallen counterparts. Mach's buster went off with a subdued "Koom!" sound and a very faint cyan muzzle flash as the solid flechette-like projectile was fired towards the Heaviest's position.

Expecting a counterattack, Mach and his twin holographic decoys cartwheeled in the air to the right in near-perfect sync. Once the trio righted themselves, the two decoys then streaked back down to the ground; the first decoy had its buster drawn and buzzed the Wavegear before it began to orbit just slightly overhead. The second "landed" near the Marinee and attempted to weave its way towards it as if it was trying to go in for strike at melee range. Mach; however, remained more or less in place afterwards, since he had two more weapons to bring to bear. His right forearm and hand reformatted into a triple-barreled heavy rotary cannon, and put his crosshairs directly over the Marinee's position. The submerged virus would likely prove difficult to locate, but his enhanced targeting software would give him at least a best guess, and the high-explosive incendiary rounds might be enough to blow it out of the water.

He didn't hesitate to try "fishing with dynamite," and fired off the first round with a loud boom and a bright orange muzzle flash. His entire lower arm jolted backwards from the recoil, but his mechanical limb did well to manage and swing the weapon back into firing position. The onsen likely would've exploded from the round's impact and subsequent detonation, prompting Mach to shift his aim next to the Wavegear. The entire barrel assembly swung 120degrees with a metallic clunk, to bring the next loaded barrel to the 12 o'clock position. After taking a moment to refine his aim, the weapon went off with another deep boom, followed by an impact and fiery explosion less than a half-second later, and the thunk of the barrel assembly rotating about a second after. He swung the cannon back towards the Heaviest's position, expecting a viral corpse, but prepared to put one high explosive nail in that virus's coffin if needed. If there was nothing alive to target, he elected not to waste ammo and began to "holster" the cannon with a flurry of data.

Mach then immediately switched from high explosives to high voltage, and focused on the Wavegear behind the broken billboard. A split second later, a bolt of lighting, which seemed to just sprout off from Mach's "fuselage" itself, streaked down towards the target in an attempt to bring it down with a heavy dose of electricity. Just as quickly as the bolt traveled from Mach to the Wavegear's position, the bolt then arced up and towards the pool in which the Marinee lurked (if the pool wasn't already emptied/destroyed by the high explosive shell). It wasn't known if the bolt would fizzle out or cause the entire pool to get electrified, but if the Heaviest was still alive, it would soon find the mind-guided bolt surging towards its position next.

With Mach's salvo briefly over, his summoned comrades were given the green light to attack at will while he moved to avoid any inbound counterattacks. The orbiting FighterPlane had previously set up a rather shallow bank to keep itself close to the battle, but with the silent "Cleared Hot" command received from Mach, it banked away sharply to set up a gun run against the Wavegear. It rolled in on its target and went wings-level, then opened up with its twin cannons in one short burst in an attempt to perforate the Wavegear. Meanwhile, the Knight piece rotated in place, grinding against the bottom of the onsen pool with its base until it faced the Marinee's pool. It then catapulted itself out of the pool then careened towards the sub-shaped virus in a tall arc, and landed with a tremendous splash with intent to crush and pulverize.

If the sneaky submarine virus somehow managed to evade deletion at that point, Mach still had one more plan. He remained perched in the air as he pointed his open right hand towards the pool or the Marinee itself. The front digits of his fingers mechanically snapped forward, which seemed to trigger a beam of magnetism to zoom down to the pool in an attempt to find and subsequently seize the virus in a "tractor beam"-like pull. If Mach managed to get a bite on his magnetic fishing line, he yanked his arm back as the force of his magnetic beam increased in an attempt to 'reel in' the virus and pluck it out of its refuge. Mach had pointed his engines and thrust vectoring panels downwards in an attempt to keep him from simply getting pulled down towards the virus instead, because he wanted to not only deliver a stunning bolt of electricity once it got close, but more importantly to leave it exposed to what came next.

As soon as the virus was briefly electrocuted, Mach snapped his engine nacelles and the rest of his body down to face the hopefully airborne virus. Without the magnetic pull, his target was now falling, so his engines immediately went to full afterburner and sent him careening towards the virus at incredible speed. The acceleration was so great, a veil of pressurized air formed over his entire body like a roughly conical shockwave, to essentially form a battering ram made of kinetic energy. His goal was to bash into the virus long before it reached the ground, and giving himself enough room to avoid impacting the ground himself.

Soaring up into the skies to get a better view of the situation, MachMan was suddenly greeted by the sight of the Heaviest warping in directly next to him. Fortunately, he was able to shoot it down with his buster as soon as it appeared, executing it before it could ram into him. Anchor-bearing bubbles continued to float up to him, though their slow floaty movement meant that his rapid rocketing allowed him to easily skirt by the bubbles, and he wasn't even in any need of his shielding. High in the skies, the Wavegear was also rendered mostly inert with its geysers, as it switched to more defensive tactics. With good timing, as MachMan switched over to more brute-force tactics and brought out a heavy rotary cannon that blew away the terrain. The 'Gear's evasive maneuvers allowed it to avoid the cannon shot easily, but the submarine virus wasn't so lucky, and was unceremoniously ejected from its hiding spot. However, the geyser-summoning virus wasn't so lucky afterwards, as it received some high-voltage love that roasted it quite thoroughly, with the lightning arcing over to the Mariner as well, taking them out in one fell swoop. All that was left was the carnage that he had left behind, as well as some interesting chip data...

Battlechip, 3600z, 51 BugFrags
The FighterPlane and Knight immediately disengaged when both of their respective targets flat-lined, leaving Mach a relatively still battlefield through which he could pick up the rewards. He eased down to the network floor, but kept a safe half-foot off the floor buffer to prevent damage to his mechanical feet. He occasionally reached down to pluck data packets containing zenny, bugfrags, and even one quite powerful battlechip. He didn't make any comment on the battle or the chip, he instead went back to cleaning up whatever recoverable data remained.

Mazer; however, gave a quiet whistle when he looked over the chip's stats. [I obvious shoo-in for our arsenal...] he thought to himself as he slotted a blank chip in for download/printing. As the PET worked on imprinting the blank chip with the new data, Mazer tried to take in some of the details of the battlefield, namely the statue. Mach might not have paid it much mind other than the fact it was an obstacle, but the markings seemed too deliberate to ignore, and it seemed to pique Mazer's curiosity. ["Hey Mach, before we move out, care to check out the statue at your 5 o'clock?"] "Why?" the Navi curtly responded, and didn't stop picking up the last of the zenny and bugfrag datapackets. ["Just humor me for a second, this area is obviously this way for a reason, and this statue might clue us in to who or what are the new tenants."]

Mach downloaded the last of the zenny to the PET, and grumbled before he floated to the statue to get a better look. He gave the statue a decent once-over, but he wasn't exactly motivated to find it interesting or put significant effort into theorizing or understanding the statues markings. If he didn't find anything immediately alarming, like a switch, coordinates, or references to someone/something he knows, he floated past the statue with his eye set on whatever lay deeper in the network. "Nothing worth noting," he commented as he throttled up and began to take to the sky in search of more targets.

((Ready for Battle #2))
As Mach moved deeper into the poorly lit ruined network, the forgotten spring vibe continued, leading out into a large, broad pool that may once have been pleasant but was now almost entirely degraded into a thick, sludgy pool of virulently glowing purple poison. The ground around the pool was cracked and unstable, and it looked as though the pool itself may have once been a series of several smaller springs, which had, one after another, been broken down as it feel to destruction and neglect. Partially broken pathways led out into the large pond, looking as though they might once have served to separate the springs, but were now incomplete and sank into the poison.

There were viruses here too, of course... why wouldn't there be, in a place like this? Most obvious to sight were a pair of bright red and brown mudfeesh-types; these ones, however, had the bright colourings of dangerous creatures, and seemed to be revelling in the mass of unsightly poison, spreading it wherever they went. A whirly-type also seemed to be residing in the middle of the sludge pond; it looked a bit sickly, but the poison didn't seem to be affecting it. Elsewise, rather large Shrimpy virus hovered above the ruptured ground to Mach's right, and, about halfway across the pool, on the left hand side, another Wavegear sat in the middle of what looked to be the single remaining pool of Onsen that was still disconnected from the poison by a thin strip of cracked ground.

The other thing that Mach would notice, if he was sharp and paying attention, was that there was an unusual purple lump in the back right of the poisoned pool — it was glowing as well, but shed its own purple light alongside the unhealthy pulsing glow of the poison it was mostly submerged in. The poison itself looked like it was beginning to poc-mark and corrode whatever it was, so if Mach wanted to see what the familiar shape contained he'd need to get it out of there quickly.

Mach noted the change in scenery as he cruised ahead, along with several data signatures that popped up on his "radar." The flooded pool of sludge didn't seem to deter the viruses that wallowed in it, but it certainly wasn't something he'd partake in. However, amidst the sludge's pulsating glow was a single, faint, steady-state glow coming from an odd lump in the ooze. It's glow, rough shape, and data readings suggested it wasn't a virus, but instead some sort of Mystery Data packet. It was too conspicuous to remain hidden, and considering his last fight included a lot of explosions, he didn't want his attacks to end up burying the MD under an impassable layer of toxic sludge.

He quickly developed a strategy, then called out to his NetOp for chips. " MagBolt1Damage: 90 + Stun + Magnetic Pull

Still curt, but his tone didn't sound as thorny... Regardless, Mazer popped the trio of chips from his "magazine" and began to slot them in. Meanwhile, Mach summoned both of his decoy drones, which projected their clone holograms before they were silently cleared off to harass the enemy. Mach began a sudden dive as well, but his focus was on the glowing lump in the sludge that he assumed to be a mystery data. He tried to keep his speed up as he dove towards his objective, and utilized the thrust reverser vents that ringed his engine nacelles to slow him enough to safely approach the PMD without plunging into the toxic pool below. He extended his left arm and open hand down towards the surface of the sludge, and leaned his body appropriately as tried to glide past. His spindly fingers splayed outwards in an attempt to pluck the PMD out of the pool, even if it meant dunking most or all of his hand into the caustic water.

He expected the sludge to start causing gradual damage immediately, even though he wouldn't feel it, and attempted to shake whatever toxins that remained off both his hand and hopefully the PMD as well. In an attempt to mitigate the damage, he activated his system refresh subroutine to prevent the toxins from working their way into his systems, then held the PMD in the hook of his arm and braced the other side firmly against the corner of his mostly vertical abdomen and mostly horizontal fuselage armor. He anticipated his sudden arrival would cause the viruses to immediately react with violence, so he attempted to jet to the side by angling his upper body and the thrust vectoring panels on his engines in the hope of avoiding enemy fire while his energy shields came online.

A quick glance showed two of the three requested chips had been successfully uploaded, which prompted Mach to immediately shift to an attack posture. He attempted to visually re-acquire the Shrimpy virus while it was being aggressively charged by one of his decoys. Upon doing so, he punched his right arm forward, but his hand remained open and his palm faced directly towards the virus's position. The front digits of his fingers mechanically snapped forward, which triggered a beam of magnetism to zoom towards the Shrimpy with the intent seize the virus before dragging it back as if tethered by an invisible chain. Once it got close enough for the rapidly building electrical energy in his right hand to arc, the virus would immediately be subjected to a debilitating jolt of electricity.

Regardless of whether or not the Shrimpy got grilled by the sudden shock, it wasn't over yet. Another white-hot bolt of electricity, this time originating from his "fuselage" itself, zipped towards the aquatic virus to deliver an even stronger burst of electrical power. If it hit, the bolt seemed to leap from the Shrimpy in a shallow arc towards the Wavegear. Ironically, its apparent attempt to keep itself safe from the poisonous sludge left it vulnerable to the power surge that rocketed towards its position. After hopefully giving the virus a thorough cooking, the bolt jumped yet again, but this time towards the hovering Spiraly virus. The decoy drone that weaved through and around the pair of Sludgefeesh viruses didn't pause as the bolt likely streaked past its position as it bee-lined towards its last target with deadly intent.

Though the bolt's total flight time was only about one second, Mach didn't waste time to momentarily shift from attack to defense. His right arm began to reform into the trusty three-barrelled rotary cannon as the rest of his body rocketed backwards not only to avoid incoming fire, but also to keep his remaining foes from surrounding him. The bright cyan plumes of flame from his thrust reverser vents caused his glossy canopy-shaped helmet and lightly polished armor panels to flicker in the light, while his legs and ruddervators moved ever so slightly to keep him upright while he attempted to dodge the counterattacks sent his way.

A moment later, the vents closed and the cyan flames instead burst from the backs of his engine nacelles, which brought him to a very abrupt stop. He leaned over slightly out of reflex to shield the PMD with part of his body as he swung the rotary cannon into position. A crosshair had already materialized on his HUD, which followed the boresight of his cannon as he trained his aim on the first Sludgefeesh. As soon he obtained a clear shot, he fired the cannon. His canopy did well to shield him from the muzzle flash and muffle the sound of the weapon going off, but he could still feel the shockwave pass across his body. The high explosive incendiary round burst from the barrel in an almost perfectly flat path towards the Sludgefeesh, and regardless if it hit or not, the round would eventually explode with a fireball upon impact.

The barrel assembly rotated immediately after firing the first shot, and Mach attempted to aim towards the second Mudfeesh as soon as he mitigated the weapon's recoil. He didn't want to give any of the viruses time to react, so he moved as quickly and efficiently as he could to deliver a second round with as much to surgical accuracy as possible. With another loud boom and flash of orange fire, his second explosive round was sent towards its target at muzzle velocity. He tried to keep up his unnervingly quick mechanical pace as he aimed towards the Wavegear, if there was anything left. If he had a clear shot, he would've waited only for the barrel to rotate into its firing position. As soon as both perimeters were met, he fired the cannon for a third, and final time, at least for this engagement. The then trio of heavy cannon blasts likely would've caused the flooded, toxic pool to become active with shockwave-induced ripples, which would've contrasted greatly with Mach's very still frame (even while floating). All three barrels of the rotary cannon continued to ooze smoke and heat, but unlike previous iterations of this weapon, this one didn't eject massive shell casings. In this situation, it appeared to be a good design choice, that "fluff" likely would've gotten him splashed with the toxic muck below.

Moments later, the cannon quickly reconfigured as his last chip was activated; the barrels appeared to have fused into one larger barrel, with a small tube holding a pilot light just past its cylindrical muzzle. The rear of the weapon, where his elbow would normally be, took the shape of a rounded fuel drum. Though his targets were roughly the same as before, he tried to adjust his aim so he could get all three in one sweeping shot. As soon as he got a targeting solution, he "pulled the trigger," which prompted a stream of fire to burst forth from the flamethrower's muzzle, and sail towards the Mudfeesh in shallow arc. While the flamethrower was still spewing fire, he smoothly panned the weapon to the side, and towards the Spiraly, with the intent to leave a trail of fire that covered all three. He wasn't sure how effective the immolated fuel would be when dumped on poison, but he was certain the viruses wouldn't fare well regardless.

DecoyA: Draw fire from Shrimpy
DecoyB: Draw fire from the Sludgefeesh
Seeing the little bit of reward data sticking out in the middle of all of the hostiles, MachMan set to work in swooping in to grab it, deploying his decoy drones to distract the enemy. They were quite successful in luring out the first of the viruses' onslaught of attacks, while MachMan was easily able to retrieve the purple data crystal from the toxic bog, avoiding a charging Whirly in the process. With his retrieval operation turning out as a success, he brought his shields online to intercept incoming attacks. The mudfish-like Sludgefeesh viruses the whirlpool-riding Whirly crab weren't all too happy about missing their mark earlier, and flopped their bodies against his shields. Two of them missed entirely, but one of the Sludgefeesh bounced against the energy shield and invaded his processes with debilitating poison through them. (Poison10)

The Wavegear summoned a geyser that was deflected by his energy shield as well, just as he pulled out the MagBolt chip to pull the Shrimpy closer to him. Unfortunately, the shrimp-like virus was too deft, and swerved just barely out of the way into the hot spring pool to counter his attack with a ballistic bubble blast. His shields continued to hold as he pressed the attack with the Synapse chip, this time managing to hit the Shrimpy and roast it outright. The hits ended there, however, as the Wavegear evaded the incoming lightning bolt. The Sludgefeesh and Whirly continued their attempts to collide with MachMan, one of which was foiled by MachMan's swift moves, and the other two simply by the viruses' attacks not being accurate enough.

The Wavegear retaliated with another geyser, which MachMan managed to deflect with his shield, before he unleashed two more powerful fire chips against the viruses. Assisted by his accurate targeting system, all of them hit their mark, dealing a significant amount of damage to his opponents, with the Sludgefeesh taken out, and the remaining two viruses quite badly hurt.

His shields managed to hold, but one of the Mudfeesh managed to spread poison to his program. He punctuated this by jolting his throttles forward, causing his engines to howl and send him rocketing forward. His ruddervators angled down while his thrust vectoring paddles angled up, which threw him into a rapid climb. His left arm continued to clutch the PMD firmly while his right arm, which was still in the shape of a large flamethrower, held a 90 degree angle at the elbow and remained steadfast as he waited for the next chip finish its upload.

A second or so later, he got the notification he was looking for, followed by Mazer's voice. ["Uploaded, mop em up,"] he said, without showing the building frustration he too was feeling. After he briefly went vertical, he kicked the vectoring paddles back to make his body somersault backwards, so he could face back down to the viruses below and bring his next weapons to bear. The crosshair in his HUD slid over to the Wavegear as his right arm pivoted towards the virus, even while almost his entire limb was mid-transformation. A split second later, the flamethrower changed into a another large, single-barreled weapon, but this one contained a single high-velocity shell instead of a tank of highly flammable fuel. The barrel extended a good three feet from the tank turret-like block where his elbow would normally be, with it's rifled bore pointing directly at the Wavegear.

MachMan braced himself, namely to prevent dropping the PMD, then fired the cannon. A white condensation ring briefly flickered around the end of the muzzle and the orange plume of flame that blasted forth, which announced the staggering "BOOM" that likely caused the lake of poison to quake from the shockwave. The entire barrel retreated nearly a quarter-foot into its housing to mitigate some of the recoil, leaving the rest to be absorbed by his mechanical arm and shoulder. The onsen pool likely would've exploded in a spray of water the very instant the cannon went off, due to the close range, and hopefully left nothing more than a Wavegear-colored debris field behind.

Hopefully that would only leave a single virus remaining, and he had just the thing to deal with it. Instead of his right arm reformatting yet again into some other heavy weapon, a single rocket materialized under his left engine nacelle near his "armpit." The rocket had two sets of four fins, one set was positioned just behind the pointy, seeker-less nose cone, while the second set ringed the solid fuel motor at the back. The crosshair on his HUD jumped to a different position, and moved along with his upper torso, instead of just his arm. He jetted briefly to the side in anticipation of return fire heading his way, which also helped him angle his body towards the Spiraly.

Once his crosshairs stopped over the virus, the rocket's motor ignited and sent it zooming off the mounting rail and streaked towards the virus, leaving a thin white trail of smoke behind. It had no homing ability, but its fins made its route of flight as straight as one could hope for an unguided rocket. As soon as it impacted, whether it be the Spiraly or the lake below, the warhead exploded with a very unimpressive flicker of light, but the poison in the immediate area of the Spiraly's position likely would've briefly formed a large spherical crater. It carried a concussion warhead, with more than enough power to send most programs flying, or driving them down straight to the bottom of a poisonous lake, in the Spiraly's case... at least, that's what Mach intended to do.

As mach climbed upwards into high-altitude, the angry viruses attempted to attack him futilely with their ground based attacks. The Wavegear causing waves of water to fly as Machman would take aim at the virus, blasting it out from the air and splattering it's junk data across the onsen. The Whirly would try attacking just the same, spinning around and around again right under Mach's position, hopping up and down as it swore at Machman, waving it's claws angrily as he blew the crab out of it's tornado of water, dying futilely as it tried in vain to hurt the navi. Rewards were scattered about, including a series of bubbles on the onsen that looked like it could make chip data. Now Mach had the choice of opening up the PMD or carrying it with him for the foreseeable future.

His last two attacks hit their marks and finally brought them down, allowing him to carefully skim just above the poison lake, gathering up zenny, bugfrags, and a chip as he went. The data was downloaded as quickly as it was gathered, and Mazer watched as the zenny and bugfrag totals climbed steadily. Mazer focused on the bugfrags in particular, and scratched the side of his head as he pondered what to do with them. The quickest answer was to use them on a new SP, but he wouldn't be surprised if Mach would be resistant to one; the "wound is still raw" as it were...

Mach efficiently scoured the area for loot, and once the data was recovered, he then shifted his attention to the PMD. He held it out with one hand, then attempted to open it.

((OPEN PMD))
Having scoured the field for the spoils of battle, MachMan then set out to decrypt the Mystery Data crystal that he had just obtained. However, as soon as he began decrypting it, the crystal exploded in a cloud of black smoke! The smoke cleared relatively quickly, but when he was able to see again, the crystal had vanished from in front of him. Suddenly, a static-garbled cackle would quickly demand his attention--the crystal had reappeared in one of the springs, bisected horizontally to reveal a shadowy core with bright red eyes peeking out from it: a Mimic!

The eyes shone brightly, covering the field in a brilliant red shine, which then rapidly receded to reveal that a host of viruses had been summoned. The Wavegear he had deleted earlier was resurrected next to the Mimic in the springs, while a pair of four-legged Magneaker-type viruses stood just at the edge of the toxic bog next to it. In the poisonous pool itself, a Tark hovered gently in the center of the purple slurry, its googly eyes focused on MachMan's figure, while a dumbbell-shaped Heaviest was... half-submerged in the poison, its square-ish face sunk into it in a rather unfortunate-looking pose.

A Mystery Data bisected horizontally, with a shadowy core binding the halves together. Two menacing red eyes leer out from the shadows in the crack between them, and a swirl of dark energy of the same color as the data whirls around the entire virus constantly. A Mimic only spawns if an MD is present, and the roll to check contents comes up as a Trap. The MD then becomes a single Mimic. Mimics do not ever appear otherwise. Once triggered, a Mimic either mass summons Viruses, Navis, or other Battle Programs for the next battle number, or mass teleports all allies to the location of the next battle (which is always within the same network area), and the battle begins immediately. These mass summon and mass teleport abilities are unique to Mimics, and cannot be emulated. When a Mimic is defeated, it reverts to MD form. At this point, it becomes ethereal, and cannot be damaged in any way.

Mazer briefly paused mid-slotting of the first chip, then got back to work. [Hm, I don't think we've used that one before...] he thought to himself, then paused again after he slotted it in. [Wait, we used every chip we had against that thing that took Aera and Vector... but it was all a blur... I couldn't keep up.]

MachMan had raised his mostly transparent energy shields, which also seemed to "spawn" his two holoprojector-covered decoy drones behind him at the same time. In the blink of an eye, both created exact copies of their host Navi then rocketed forward in a zig-zag pattern towards the viruses ahead. Meanwhile, hopefully undetected thus far, a wall of bushes seemed to grow up out of the floor and muck behind the viruses. Without warning, sharpened bamboo lances shot out from the bushes at incredible speed like incredibly long spears, in an attempt to skewer every enemy target on the field. Mach's priorities were the two Magnoids, the Tark, and the Heaviest, so the rest would be just icing on the cake. Regardless of their accuracy and reach or lack thereof, the lances retreated back to the bushes and they all disappeared just as quickly and silently as they arrived.

Though he hoped the assault brought down at least a couple viruses, he assumed the attack wouldn't go unanswered. He pitched his upper body to right as his thrust vectoring paddles angled upwards, so when he hit the throttles, he began to climb up and to the right. His entire body then started to roll with the help of his ruddervators and limbs, allowing him to execute a true "barrel roll" and trace a corkscrew-shaped path in the air in an attempt to dodge incoming fire. As soon as he went back to being fully upright, he tried to line up the Wavegear, the Purple Mimic, and the Tark, before he firewalled his throttles and kicked on the afterburners. Twin 4-foot cones of deep purple and blue cones of flame spit out the back of each engine with a frenzied howl, and sent him careening towards his targets. He moved so quickly the "air" around him couldn't move out of the way fast enough, creating a cone-like battering ram made entirely out of hyper-pressurized air, with which he planned to bash the Wavegear, Purple Mimic, and Tark into.

He rocketed through their position like a missile, then suddenly disappeared in a flash of cyan light, only to instantly re-appear from another cyan flash a few feet back in the other direction. He'd teleported back closer to the Mimic and its Wavegear guard, but had also somehow reversed his direction without slowing his momentum, hopefully allowing him to blast back through the two viruses while the chip was still active. The chip's power ran dry quickly, and he eventually was forced to slow down. The cones of flame shrank then disappeared as he shut off his afterburners and used his thrust reversing panels to provide some "braking" before he attempted to turn back around to face his targets.

Once he did so, a brightly glowing orb of light materialized above his dark cyan canopy, like a miniature star. A second or so later, a very bright beam of light shot from the glowing orb, carving a perfectly straight path across the battlefield towards the Purple Mimic. The beam was sufficiently concentrated and powerful enough to simply burn through everything in its path, so Mach attempted to direct the beam's line of fire to not only punch a hole in the Mimic, but to catch the Wavegear, Tark, and even the Heaviest in its path as well if possible. The orb shrank significantly once it fired the beam, then eventually ran out of energy and disappeared, causing the beam to vanish along with it.

If the beam of concentrated solar energy wasn't enough to bring the enemy down, he'd just have to deal with them in a much less refined, but equally effective, manner. Glowing white ripples of energy coursed over and through Mach's body, armor, and prosthetics to correct any glitches or ailments to his programming, then shot forward again with a second super-sonic charge. Just like a few seconds before, his engines roared and his body seemed to look more like a dark blur than a Navi. He attempted to bash every remaining virus in his path to smithereens using the sheer kinetic force of his body, as he ripped along the battlefield at speeds quickly exceeding the speed of sound.

With his prize delayed, Mach set to swift work re-killing things that wouldn't stay dead and sending other new arrivals to keep them company. A few of the unexpected viruses managed to get the lead on him, purely from their sudden appearance, and the Heavy, half submerged in the poison muck and looking like it was eating into the metal, warped swiftly in an effort to blind-side Mach and both of his decoys; it had clearly been deceived by both of them, but that just made the initial cluster as they phased in seem all the better a target for the weighty virus. Fortunately for Mach, its attention was divided enough that the heavy sweep it made across the field only swept through his two fakes, and missed Mach himself entirely.

Mach took some air to prepare just as the Wavegear in the onsen below created a column of spray intended for him; it fell short of reaching Mach, already too high for the virus to get to with its ground based attacks. As the navi powered up his shielding, however, the purple crystal gathered a chunk of corrupted data from within itself and sent it trailing after Mach — quicker than he'd seen from weaker mimics. It was only with a sudden, scrambling reposition that Mach avoided the glitchy ball, and he knew it would have enough force to make another pass at him soon.

Down below, the two 'neakers launched stun bombs up in Mach's direction, but the shot was hard to make and not a good angle for either. The bombs went wide, busting harmlessly in the air and just barely missing a couple of their allies as well. The explosions covered for a sneakier, more accurate jet of water being shot his way by the Tark, down below, but once again Mach had just enough time and space to scramble clear.

Still watching him, the two bug viruses attempted to reposition themselves for a better shot, moving evasively, but Mach's response was perfectly tailored to eliminate the pests. Despite their best efforts at avoiding his attacks, the sudden spear bursts from behind caught both Magnoids off guard and they were run through and destroyed with a couple of small shrieks. The Killby group had enough spears to get attacks in on the Tark and the Wavegear as well, but for now that was all they managed to reach before fading back into hiding.

The Heavy rammed back again, having another go at the one Mach that remained, but it couldn't seem to connect with the nimble navi; it looked like it may have been about to, but Mach suddenly blasted forward, having lined up his trajectory to charge a number of the remaining viruses. With the field trimmed down a little, Mach's best line saw him striking out at the Wavegear, the Mimic and the Tark. His line looked good, but as he approached, the Tark spat something dark at the on-coming mech. The glob turned out to be a mass of blinding sludge that his own capabilities quickly cleared away, but it seemed it had been partially responsible for him missing the purple crystal on his first pass. The Wavegear and the Tark itself had been reduced to data smears, though, so that was something.

As he passed, the Mimic gave an alarmed chime sound, causing a field of purple energy to spring up around it, but as Mach came to the end of his first attack run, the Heaviest seized its chance to finally nail the overly mobile enemy. Only to have Mach vanish, again, right before it connected. Mach himself hadn't slowed down, but the teleport sent him screeching back the way he'd come, making a second pass at the Mimic without warning. This time he connected, spinning the virus around to the sound of an angry screech like cracked glass. The mimic, however focused its eyes on the retreating back of Mach, and with a response of rage, the front of the crystal unfolded to emit a bright bean of rending energy that chased him down and struck him in the back before he could right himself. He turned himself to face the Mimic again a moment later, and bring his shields to bear, but the scorching pain in his back was a reminder that he'd not been quite fast enough.

Of course, one good turn always deserved another, and Mach had a bright beam attack of his own to answer with, blasting it right back at the surprised Mimic, and catching the unfortunate Heaviest in the line of fire as well. The mimic was showing signs of small cracks beginning to lace its structure, but the heaviest was barely holding itself together. It wobbled and faltered, dragging across the ground partially as it failed to warp back to its original position and instead half-rolled, half tumbled back into the poison pool without really seeing where it was going. It gave a few more distressed moans, before the poison did the rest of the work and the virus melted into silence.

This left Mach alone with the mimic, and he took another charge at it for good measure. Something about the other factors on the battlefield threw him off for a moment, though, and he didn't connect. Even so, the trickster was now the only thing standing between him and the rewards he'd earned.

The number of times it will consecutively attempt to ram the target before teleporting back to its starting position depends entirely on the number of actions the virus has. Teleporting before and after the attack do not require an action. Movement and attacking are one and the same to this virus, thus even a non-attack collision with it is damaging.

Purple MimicPurple Mimic (Mimic)

At this point, it becomes ethereal, and cannot be damaged in any way.

he growled before he activated his lone recovery program.

Within moments, the airtight armor briefly filled up with recovery data, which permeated what was left of his "original" body and spread to the rest of his armor and prosthetics to repair the damage inflicted by the Mimic's beam. The burning pain in his back quickly subsided as the regenerative energy got to work, but he didn't take any time to relax or fully appreciate the relief; he anticipated the Mimic would've caught on to his attempt to avoid its attacks using speed, not to mention the swirling data projectile that had turned back to make another pass at him.

With the hopes to foul any attempt by the hostile PMD to "lead" him or let the glitch ball catch up, his upper body pitched upwards as if he was looking to climb in a hurry. Indeed he did, his entire body shot up nearly a dozen feet as his horizontal velocity plunged due to his entire body acting like a large speed break, but he briefly his throttles and caused his climb to slow as well. His thrust vectoring nozzles and ruddervators angled to Mach's left, and he bumped up his right engine separate from his left, causing his body to rotate counterclockwise, so the front of his pointed armor swung from pointing directly up to straight down to the "ground" below in about 2 seconds.

Briefly obscured by his own engine nacelle, his right forearm and fist multiplied into three triangularly-arranged triplets, but they soon came into view as body tilted up to face the Mimic again, as he was now somehow flying backwards. That said, his speed gradually fell like he was coasting, which kept him steady enough to lock all three cross hairs on the Mimic. As soon as he did so, all three of his right fists catapulted themselves off his upper arm, each propelled by a solid rocket motor and sent them arcing towards the lone enemy. Mach planned to use the trio of rocket punches to further soften up the virus, and give him an opening to charge in yet again. Twin cones of flames erupted from his engines, causing him to stop in an instant and rocket forward at alarming speed a split-second later. His accuracy had been an issue so far this battle, but now that he had no other viruses to deal with, he felt he could at least focus solely on the Mimic.

He attempted to blitz through the virus's position using the pressurized air veil like a battering ram while his systems refreshed, and regardless of his success, he disappeared with a cyan flash, leaving two fresh decoys behind. Both doppelgangers banked away from each other to turn back towards the Mimic, with engines roaring and fists drawn back, as if they were preparing to initiate a scrum with the virus. With the Mimic hopefully focusing on the two approaching decoys, Mach reappeared behind his target in a flash of light, but also accompanied with an ear-splitting sonic boom. He essentially passed through the sound barrier twice, once to accelerate, then again to come to a complete stop, and did so within punching distance of the virus. The sheer kinetic force hopefully sent a shattering shockwave through the Mimic, with a suddenness that Mach hoped would leave his foe shocked at least long enough for him to bring the hammer down... literally.

While his arrival was sudden, he also appeared with both of his spindly arms raised over his head, which gripped a nearly 4 foot-long handle that supported a massive rectangular pillar-like hammer head at its end. His body strained, but held up to the extreme torque as he didn't waste time swinging the hammer down over the Mimic's position with all of his might. It probably looked odd to see such a sleek, angular Navi use something as metaphorically and physically blunt as a giant hammer, but Mach only cared about terminating the Mimic with extreme prejudice. The hammer weighed nearly as much as he did, and the momentum of the swing briefly caused his body to rise when he brought the hammer down.

If he missed, or the Mimic managed to survive the kinetic onslaught, he rocketed skyward in an attempt to avoid a retaliatory beam or glitch shot, then zoomed off to the left. He still had more than enough chips to deal with the lone enemy, but he likely needed at least a brief moment to "reload" before diving back in to finish it off.

A brilliant lightshow ensued as MachMan rocketed off to avoid a barrage of glitch-ridden energy balls and powerful purple lasers, patching up his body in the process. The sneak-attack warp was the clincher of his attacks, shattering the crystal with the sonic boom that ensued from his teleportation alone.

The Mimic fell from the sheer force of his arrival alone and shattered with a fountain of zenny data, prompting Mach to deactivate the hammer while it was still raised above his head. The weight instantly lifted off his shoulders, allowing him to do one last visual sweep of the now quiet battlefield before he got to work gathering up the spoils. Mach noted the sheer amount of zenny that was left behind, but didn't do much to acknowledge it beyond downloading it all to the PET. Mazer, on the other hand, raised his eyebrows and uttered an impressed ["Woah,"] as the zenny poured in.

A decently powerful chip data was the 'cherry on top' of the sizeable loot pile, leaving Mach in a quiet and barren battlefield. Mazer started to grab a blank chip upon which to burn the new data, and spoke to Mach as he was looking down at the fresh blank chip in his hand. ["Still up for more?"]

Mach didn't say anything, instead he throttled up and climbed as he picked up speed. That's really all the answer Mazer needed, since Mach was now back to cruising deeper into the network.

((Ready for Battle #4))
After having a veritable mother lode of zenny deposited into his operator's account, MachMan went further in through the area. Then, among the wrecked, decrepit set of hot spring areas, he found something rather interesting--an untouched, almost pristine-looking pool, that looked as if someone had been taking care of it. White pebbles decorated the area around a pool with circular stone slabs forming a pathway into the pool itself, with a pile of hot coals gathered up in the very middle. Atop the coals, a stone statue of a lion poured out hot water from its mouth into the pool: it was quite a well-cared setup.

There was no sign of any such caretaker that had done so now, though, as a few viruses had taken up residence in the pool. Swimming in the pool itself was a Piranha-type virus that raced around the pool, while further back, a Shellgeek-type half-submerged in the water peeked out of its shell before slamming it shut. Immediately in front of him on top of one of the circular slabs that made up the road, a Cannondumb swiveled its turret head to meet MachMan's figure, while a Windbox-type right next to it began to start up its fans. Lastly, a swarm of mosquito-like Skeetur could be seen hovering above the lion, also eyeing up Mach from a distance.

Piranha3Piranha3 (Piranha)

Piranha viruses work as a hive-mind. They all move at the same time, attempt to detect targets at the same time, and once a targets is detected by any of them, they all attack that one target at the same time. Moving and searching for targets takes one action. Attacking takes another. Any Piranha just recovering from a status effect that prevents normal operation will resume acting in unison with the rest of the group.
