Testing Run Part 2

Astraea appeared on the Net in a fairly standard beam of bluish-white light. She looked carefully around her before she check the shield on her wrist, the blaster at her side, and the little keyboard belted around her waist. Once she had assured herself that all the aforementioned gear was there and in working order she would begin her trek into the Net.

As the intrepid navi wondered back onto the nets with a song on her lips and murder in her heart, the quickly came upon a group of viruses, thankfully most of the ground was intact, but...there was something going on. A hole in the middle of the field with a soft green glow, the group of viruses huddled around it. Unfortunately for her, they were quick to figure out they were being watched by the navi and brandished their weapons (And tongues) in defiance of the navi, forming a loose wall around the open hole and green glow.

"Hey, what's that over there?" Alex asked, his voice loud enough to carry through to the greater Net. Apparently it was enough to alert the viruses because they were all quick to turn around and face her at that moment. At least the NetOp had the graces to sound embarrassed. "Oops! Oh well, I don't think we've seen these guys yet. There's another of those green things though, try not to blast it during the testing! Do you want chips now or save them for later?"

"Hold the chips in reserve, I wish to test my tools." Astraea said. She surveyed the area carefully with her eyes slightly narrowed and her mouth turned down at the edges. She was going to have to plot her moves carefully if the GMD was to survive. Her right hand reached down to the keyboard at her waist and tapped out a quick sequence.

A beam of light plummeted from somewhere in the upper regions of the Net to crash against the floor beside Astraea. It didn't last long, and as it faded away it left a rather unbalanced looking machine behind. A stereotypical flying saucer with a glass bubble in the middle wasn't flying, instead it was perched on three wobbly looking legs that surrounded a dangling chain that ended in a hook. For a moment it appeared empty, and then a pair of vaguely familiar eyestalks popped up in the cockpit as the pilot appeared. It looked like a badly drawn miniature version of Astraea, complete with pixellated outlines and an obvious quality of 2D-ness that made Astraea stare.

"What is that?" She asked as she pulled her raygun from its holster and fixed a joint on one of the legs. Alex unsuccessfully tried to hide his laugh with a cough.

"I think Mei put it there as a joke, when she upgraded the PET." Alex said. He sounded quite amused by the Astraea-impression. "I think it's like a place holder image! To give you ideas. I had nothing to do with it, I swear!"Astraea narrowed her eyes but said nothing as she turned her attention back to the viruses.

The ufo-pilot slapped a hand down on the console in front of it. The hook hanging underneath shot out towards one of the Swordy's, attempting to drag it away from the pit.

Astraea shook out the shield on her wrist and held it in front of her to hopefully catch any attacks coming her way. Once that was up she reholstered her raygun to type out another sequence. Another beam of light hit the ground, in front of her this time, and left one of her Cinder Turrents in its wake. The little red turret beeped quietly to itself at first as it took in its surroundings and then beeped twice as it spat two flaming blasts at the Spooky.

Readying herself to fight against the newly encountered viruses, Astraea summoned a rather comical-looking UFO with a crane hook, while one of the Swordies warped up to her and executed a wide slash that hit both her and the UFO. (-15) (-15) The UFO proceeded to pull in another one close to her, which then followed it up with another strike, that she managed to thankfully block with her hastily brought up shield. The UFO wasn't as fortunate, however, and took yet another hit. (-15) Joining the party, the Spooky also appeared to her right, lashing out with its massive tongue at her face. Fortunately, she was saved by the Cinder Turret, which she summoned in the nick of time to shoot a couple of fiery blasts at it. The last attack to arrive was an explosive shell, which landed slightly behind Astraea, courtesy of the Beetank far in the back. However, its explosion was indiscriminate, and caught her (-15), the Spooky, and her Cinder Turret (-15) in its explosion.

"Oooh, that doesn't look good. Glad we grabbed that upgrade." Alex said as he watched the viruses launch their attack. Things really didn't look good right now. At least Astraea was still moving. And her machines were still standing! More like barely standing. "I'm sending you some chips. I know you wanted to fight it out with your toys but that's not working out right now. Uh, where are you going?"

Astraea zapped her Cinder Turret with her raygun and then immediately moved away from the group of her objects. She was certainly looking worse for wear. Her raygun became green from chip data and she aimed it at one of the Swordy's in front of her and fired. Once that was done she was quick to beat a retreat away from the mob that had formed by walking backwards and throwing random swerves in an attempt to keep away any swords aimed in her direction. "Away from their blast range, I rigged my devices to self-detonate when they are destroyed."

Beep! Beep! Two shots from the Cinder Turret to the Spooky.

"...I am concerned.. " Alex said after a long pause. He slotted in their only healing chip and sighed. "Try to not die now."

"I think the situation is almost stabilized." She said. She let the healing data wash over her as her fingers tapped out instructions. The UFO shifted towards the tank and swung it's hook out in an attempt to drag the Beetank closer. Astraea smiled grimly.

Astraea had more faith in her mechanical expertise than most gave the wobbly creations credit for, and she set her contingency plan in motion while taking a crack-shot at one of the Swordy viruses. A satisfying direct hit obliterated it. The spooky shook one tiny fist at the Beetank, which was arcing in closer to line up another shot, and then reached out with both hands, grabbed its own over-sized tongue, and proceeded to scrub the char and blast marks off its face with it. How peculiar. It had only just finished cleaning itself up, however, when valiant CTA popped it with a couple of small cinder rounds, spoiling its freshly restored complexion.

The remaining Swordy virus reared back its weapon and made a long thrust, aiming to skewer both Astraea and her cinder turret, but the little alien girl was already scuttling away, beating feet to safety some distance off. The cinder turret took the weapon with a shudder, but held its ground in defiance. It had a job to do, and it was going to do it, come bombs of blades.

Alongside it, the very wobbly abductor launched its hook again. The tank had been moving in for a better shot, but just as it prepared to fire, the hook latched onto it and began dragging it in closer. this was not expected. The Beetank hurriedly tried to get is shot off, aiming down the chain at the UFO and its amiably cartoony pilot, but the distance was rather nearer than intended. The blast hit the UFO, that much was certain, but it also engulfed most of the rest of the cluster, viruses and constructs alike, including the Beetank itself, now that it had been dragged in.

What happened next, while Astraea healed herself from afar, was a chain reaction that no-one aside the alien engineer could have been expecting. The blast from the Beetank injured and damaged many targets, but the Abductor at the centre exploded violently, washing all and sundry in a second blast wave. This in turn was the last straw for her Cinder Turret, and with a furious roar of fire, it, too, exploded. When the percussive sound-wave rolled past and the smoke cleared, Astraea would be able to see the scattered wreckage of both of her constructs... And one very damaged looking Beetank that seemed confused by exactly what had just happened.

Alex wasn't sure what was more surprising: the chain of destruction he had just watched or the smile on Astraea's face. He recovered quickly enough to to tease her about it. "Is that, can it be? A SMILE on your face?"

Astraea pointed her raygun at the Beetank and fired a bright green blast of energy at it. PEW. "I do not understand why you are making a big deal out of this."

"Dude, I've seen you outright smile a grand total of one times now. I'm honestly kind of surprised you can!" Astraea shook her head as she padded forward towards the pit with the GMD while tracking the last known location of the Beetank out of the corner of her eyes.

"I believe the fact that this testing run, despite a rough start caused by my lack of understanding of the enemy's nature, has completed successfully to be the major factor of this." She raised her raygun again and gave the Beetank (or remains of) one last volley of energy.

PEW.

Open GMD?

"Wow, I didn't know you were a fan of overkill." Alex said with a tone of admiration and approval as the second shot from Astraea's buster obliterated what little was left of the Beetank.

"Justified precautionary measure." Astraea said blithely. The smile was still on her face as she collected her winnings, sending the new chip data on to Alex with barely a second look at it. Her real concern was the GMD and she trundled almost straight to it.

"Y'know, I'm pretty sure the moment you have to stick justified into a sentence you're suppose to reconsidered what you've done, or are going to do, or something. Who cares, that fight was pretty cool!" He said as he lazily grabbed a blank chip and slotted it in.

Astraea nodded in the way of someone who wasn't actually paying attention and reached out to touch the green crystal.

===
Open? Yes!
More fixated on the crystal before her than listening to her operator, Astraea's intuition for value proved to be on the mark. The crystal unpacked itself and reconfigured smoothly under her attention, and swiftly resolved into a shiny and well-maintained hand-cannon, complete with a high-tech targeting graticule and other slightly more superfluous bits of complicated-looking gadgetry.

GMD: MarkCannon1Damage: 70 + Seeking + Lock-on

The look that was fixed on the hand cannon was full of awe and greed. It was a well designed tool of violence and she had need of such tools now. She reluctantly sent the chip data on to Alex then made her way deeper into the Net.

(Searching for Battle 2! Astraea: 105 HP
Astraea came upon a fissure in the ground. A good deal of the terrain looked like it was cracking outward from the fissure. Between the fissure and the navi were a few viruses. A Metool virus hefted a hand cannon towards her. A bat perched on some of the cracked ground nearby. A turret rotated to face her, its foundation having cracked. And the closest to the navi was a bush-like virus that peeked out from behind a stone block. It looked like she might have a fight on her hands before too long.

-- Battle 2 Ready? Start!! --
Astraea's ambling around the net soon brought her to yet another group of adversaries. She was familiar with the abilities of three of them, while the fourth virus looked like a variation of a kind she was familiar with.

"Hey! It's another of those plant-dudes! I wonder if this one will be helpful like the last." Alex said as he shuffled around their slowly growing store of chips. "You still want to test your gadgets or do you want to try out our chips?"

"I believe that previous instance was a case of highly unusual circumstances." Astraea's mouth turned down in a slight frown as she observed the scene in front of her. As much as she wanted to test her new toys there were quite a few enemies arrayed here and she wasn't eager to repeat the painful beginning of her last fight so easily. "My untested machine should help me deal with the fragile nature of the floor here and make movement a little safer." Astraea gave a practiced flick of her wrist to unfold her shield and moved it in front of her.

"Alright, I understand. You just want to play with your new toys!" Alex chuckled.

"Test the new design." Astraea corrected under her breath, her fingers tap-tapping away at the little keyboard on her belt. A sphere of light appeared in front of her, swiftly congealing into silvery metallic box-like shape with rounded corners and a little nub supporting it at each corner. A small iris door spun open in the middle of it's top from which a plain black antenna with a red ball on the end rose up. The ball flashed once, twice, and then abruptly flashed green as grass began spreading outwards from the machine's position in a circle. Once the grass had finished spreading the little machine opened a horizontal door on one side and out hopped a smaller version of itself. The mini-terraformer raced across the field to the PulseBat and flung itself at the virus, the little terraformer's data destroying itself in the attempt.

Seemingly satisfied with the work done Astraea surveyed the area again, her eyes narrowing when she looked at the bat. That could prove to be quiet the troublesome adversary, especially with what she knew it could do to objects on the field. It was best that she get rid of it now before it wrecked havoc with her machines.

"Alex, change of schedule. Send me the chip we received from that anomalous data object we encountered."

"Changing plans already? You got it, MarkCannon1, Slot-In!"

Astraea pulled her blaster free from it's holster as the chip data transformed it into the image on the chip. She lifted the weapon and aimed it carefully at the bat before pulling the trigger

BOOM!

Summoning a shield to aid in her defensive prowess, Astraea would quickly get to work, the CannonDumb immediately taking a potshot at her and breaking the shield as she summoned her terraformer to the field. The Terraformer quickly creating a lush field as the cracks in the terrain began to slowly form up...but it wasn't all the cracks she began to fill, as some of the missing terrain was quickly overwritten by the invading grass just the same, soil filling in the empty holes in the network and patching them up. It also took a potshot at the PulseBat, who did not enjoy it so much, as it opened it's wings and sent out a sonic wave of green circles at it, hitting and damaging it as it reverberated about the object. Not to be outshone, the Shrubby quickly peeked out from behind it's stone shield and vomited up a log, tripping the navi up (-10) upon hitting her. But she did manage to get a lock onto the PulseBat and sent a retaliatory shot, smacking it before it could try to evade her attack. But the Metool, on the other hand, just up and hid under it's shiny, shiny helmet, waiting for the worst to be done and over with before even trying to do anything.

"Well that went a lot better than last time!" Alex said as he looked at the health bars on the screen. Sure Astraea hadn't actually killed anything yet, but at least that one virus was barely hanging on.

The Navi grunted an affirmative, moving away from her object so she was out of the blast radius. Her eyes squinted at the RockCube and the pest hiding behind it. "Requesting Shotgun chip data, Operator."

"How many times do I have to tell you not to be so formal? I'll send you a little extra firepower! Shotgun, Cannon, Double Slot-In!" Alex slipped the chips in quietly and efficiently. Astraea's ray gun glowed bright white then shifted, the barrel splitting in two. She pointed it at the RockCube and pulled the trigger, hoping the force of the blast would annihilate the little wooden menance as well.

The Terraformer spit out another tiny bot that attempted to ram Pulsebat despite the fact that virus was currently flying. Astraea snorted at the foolishness. Her weapon reconfigured back to its normal form, the bright glow of chipdata in its depths. She raised it towards the CannonDumb and pulled the trigger, sending a ball of white light speeding in its direction.

With her operator pleased with her efforts, Astraea moved on out of the way of the nearly-destroyed Terraformer, as she retrieved a Shotgun attack from Alex and fired it towards the Shrubby. Unfortunately, her aim was slightly off, as the shot bounced off of the cube's hard exterior and into the distance. Taking the initiative, the Shrubby exited its cover and threw a wooden log her way at breakneck speed, clipping her shin with its weight. (-10) Meanwhile, being severely injured, the PulseBat didn't seem to want anything to do with things for the moment as it took to the skies, entirely evading the last attack from the Terraformer that Astraea had set up.

The Cannondumb turret slowed down its attacks for the moment, opting to instead mark Astraea with a laser sight to enhance its attacks, before being blasted into pieces with the Cannon instead--rather rotten luck on its part. For some reason, the NeoMetool took this as a chance to strut its stuff, leaping out from under its hard helmet cover to fire a small pellet at Astraea--which missed as it whizzed past her shoulder instead, and into the Terraformer. (-10) However, it seemed like it wasn't enough to destroy the little thing outright as well.

The Navi's face creased with a frown Alex was starting to become way too familiar with. A smaller frown appeared on his own face. His Navi was really trying to work things out on her own, but he'd still better give her a hand-er chip. Although he had a hand chip he could slot in too!

"Healing coming your way!" He said as he slotted in the Recovery Chip with a flourish. They sure were getting a lot of use out of it! Maybe he should contemplate trying to find a better variant? Or maybe Astraea just needed to consider defenses when she next tinkered with things.

A bright green glow enveloped Astraea, repairing much of the damage she had taken. She closed her eyes as she felt the pain being washed away. What should she do? Her Terraformer would obviously need to be directed to a target it could easily hit, but beyond that she wasn't sure. Considering the only partial success with chips last round maybe it was best she stick to her initial decision to test her machines. It would take longer, she already knew now that the damage output was horrendously low, but what was the best order to use them in?

She sighed and opened her eyes, her fingers dropping to her belt as she tapped out a couple of commands and then moved with awkward, halting steps away from the Terraformer. Her Abductor unit appeared in a pillar of light beside it, the tiny mockery of the Navi's form waving its arm before it's ride tossed out the hook in an attempt to catch the bush-like virus and drag it in close.

Meanwhile the Terraformer, sent another of it's adorably insubstantial minions at a run towards the NeoMetool. It's creator didn't know if it would reach the virus before the dang thing hid under its hat again, but at least it was better than trying to hit a flying bat.

The best things was to stick to testing procedure and rely on her actual constructs, so Astraea decided. Well, mostly. The healing chip helped. As she attempted to move away from her Terraformer, the Pulsebat swooped down again, ready to blast the damaged device with another sonic wave, however it was momentarily distracted by Astreae's own movements away, and against al odds the sonar pulse was misdirected, and diffused before it could do any harm to the little device, clinging on as it was.

Unfortunately, its good fortune couldn't last forever, as the metool virus cast one eye up at the pulsebat, then proceeded to fire a much smaller bullet of its own in the machine's direction. It didn't do much damage, but it was enough to topple the test construction and cause it to break down for now. It had only just fallen silent, however, when Astrea's adorable abductor unit was beamed in alongside it, bolstering her allies once more. The shrubby popped out to roll a log, but seemed momentarily taken aback by the hook flying quite suddenly towards it. The log bounced away, going wide, while the Shrubby itself was very promptly taken a-forward again, this time by a very uncomfortable hook on a chain.

"If you're not using chips I'm going to get a drink!" Alex declared.

"Understood, Operator." Astraea said as she summoned her every reliable fire turret to the field a short hop and a skip away from the Abductor unit and the Shrubby. For a moment she considered having the reliable turret take fire at the Pulsebat, but with how close that particular virus was to the ground perhaps she could save it's firepower for the Shrubby.

The Abductor's pilot gave a wave as orders reached its little command seat and then it began to manipulate the controls in front of it. The seat in the cockpit spun wildly once, twice, then came to a screeching halt once the doppleganger was facing the Pulsebat. With a quick manipulation of the controls the hook was swung rather haphazardly towards the battered virus, maybe on contact it'd do enough damage to wipe it out completely.

Would it be considered cheating her test if Astraea used her buster? Testing out the functionality of the upgrade she had gotten was important too. She pulled her raygun and held down on the trigger, letting power gather in the barrel. Her newly summoned Cinder Turret spat out a pair of firey bullets at the shrub-like virus. Astraea was slower to fire, she took longer to aim but in the end she still fired at the same target. It wouldn't be enough to finish the Shrubby off outright, but it should leave it smarting.

Having delivered its latest assessment of the field, vocally and with force, the Pulsebat attempted to wing its way back into the higher reaches of the area. As it went, however, the abductor unit's hook flew after it, latching into one of the slots in the grill of the virus' helm and yanking it forcefully back to the ground. It crashed hard and the abductor drew the remains of the virus towards itself while the tiny cartoony image of Astrea pumped its fist in exultation.

Not far away, Astrea was calling in her cinder turret, and it primed itself bravely for the next fight. The turret remained entirely stoic, right up until the point that Astraea gave it a touch up and bolstered it with some mechanical TLC, at which point the turret shuddered and gave a series of happy hums and beeps, and almost seemed like it was trying to snuggle up to its creator.

It might well have continued its limited attempts at displays of loyalty, but its duty and its job would not be neglected, and when the panicked shrubby took its chance to flee from the abductor that had tried to grab it once already, CTA honed in on its retreating form, launching two swift cinder bursts that ignited its vulnerable leafy body. Not just the shrubby, in fact, but the patches of grass it was in the process of fleeing rapidly over, and the two small bolts crated quite a pronounced conflagration. CTA could be quite proud of its work this day, though it hadn't quite managed to finish the virus off on its own, it had come close, and managed more than had perhaps been expected of it.

Astraea charged a quick shot on her blaster, and seeing the glow, the NeoMet ducked down under its helmet for safety; her aim was actually at the retreating shrubby virus, however the blaze of fire that had almost scorched it off the net created more of a smoky haze than anticipated, for the few seconds as she fired, and the shot missed by a hair. CTA beeped to its creator in consolation; not to worry though, it would soon have that no-good virus dealt with for her!

CannonDumbCannonDumb (CannonDumb)

CannonDumb viruses attack any targets in sight every action they are able to. They can and will attack objects, but only objects they can damage. They will not waste cannon fire on IronBody, Shadow, or Invisible targets. The exception is Canodumb DS, which will fire at anything with its DarkCannon's beam blasts. All CannonDumb viruses may opt to spend one action prior to attacking marking their opponent with target lock. They gain the 10% accuracy benefit of Take Aim against this opponent for any and all follow-on attacks until they lose sight of the target, or switch targets.

ShrubbyShrubby (Shrubby)

Shrubby viruses take cover when they are not attacking. Shrubby viruses teleport from behind cover when attacking, but never at any other time. Later versions of the Shrubby virus carry rockcube chip data, and will use that to make new cover when none is available.
