"Tch." Aurora clicked her tongue in exasperation as she drew back slightly from the IronGuard, her sword dissipating into thin air. With a little growl, Sparky drew back slightly as well, carrying his rider with him. The shield virus was a lot sturdier than she would've expected, being able to deflect such a fast strike. Perhaps it was more intelligent than she gave it credit for.

"MediumCloud, AquaTower!"

The sound of their operator's voice buzzed in through the audio link, and Aurora's immediate vision was tinted slightly red, with a triangular-shaped "WARNING: PROXIMITY" sign a little below her focal point. At the same time, she identified the source of the attack as being from her own side. "Sparky, back!" she exclaimed. The hoverboard managed to inch out of the way just slightly before a torrent of water burst out from the sky. The splashback was as powerful as the falling water itself, thanks to the AquaTower. All in all, it was a vicious pincer attack from above and below-- there was little chance that it would survive.

Despite some difficulties with her own angle of approach, Aurora remained tactically aware, and knew when to back off, letting Eternalis execute two more chips in quick succession to try and finish off the ridge-guarding sentry. Between the marching pillars of water bursting up from below, and the sudden downpour above, the virus was resoundingly rinsed and the battlefield finally settled down.

The two, plus hover dog, were free for the time being to collect whatever useful bits and pieces they could from the battle scene, and between them they were able to recover a moderate sum of zenny, some frags, and, though it might seem like a strange thing to pick up, the Snoozier's extra fluffy sleep-inducing pillow. They'd added one notch to their bounty request, and were well in fighting shape to pursue more, as well, so that was also positive.

TitanTitan (Gigas)

The Gigas are a clan of 8 foot tall viruses whose semi-humanoid bodies are made of a durable metal alloy. Gigas lack legs, and instead roll around on a 3 ton solid steel ball 2-feet in diameter that rests in a cupola. Rising from the top of the cupola is an alloy pillar that supports their metal bodies. The Gigas fight with their huge iron fists, which are provided their immese striking power by large barrel-like forearms. Their great-helm-like heads sit directly atop their shoulders with their blocky hinged jaw slanted in a sneer while their neon-red eyes radiate their hatred of all things Navigator. It is speculated that Gigas are a hacked derivative of the Bladia viruses spliced together with fragments of other viruses and a healthy dose of battlechip program data. This would account for their size, strength, and malicious nature. Where and how this was possibly accomplished is unknown. Gigas move at increased speed, but dodge at a slower than average rate. Gigas viruses prefer to pummel the life out of their foes with their bare hands (even though using the ball-and-chain in melee range would be more devastating), but if they find themselves surrounded or at a great distance to their target, they will use the ball-and-chain to perform a HammerToss. If an object blocks their path, they will either send it flying with a GigasArm attack, or smash it to dust before continuing on. Gigas will sink like the lead weights they are in liquid, and they know it. They will avoid liquid terrain entirely, if possible, and will never appear near these types of naturally occuring terrain for this reason. Only a Gigas' body is damageable. Striking a Gigas' cast iron arms will not damage the virus or the arms themselves, no matter what you hit them with. The Gigas' will not intentionally defend themselves with their arms, as they should be too busy pummeling or hurling something to bother. Do not abuse this.

BombWorkBombWork (BombLab)

BombLab viruses attack by summoning a huge cube-shaped explosive, called a BoyBomb. They push this bomb towards their enemies, using it as cover against incoming fire as they do so. It takes a BombLab virus an action to summon a BoyBomb, and another 2 to push it into attack range of the enemy. Once the explosive is in range, it will explode the very next turn. BoyBombs have StoneBody, and can be moved with special abilities, such as Knockback, Microburst, Pull, Gravity, and Telekinesis. BoyBombs will explode if physically picked up, however (EX: Rageclaw or similar means). Bomb Lab viruses jump, not teleport, back to their starting position after setting the BoyBomb.

SnoozierSnoozier (Snoozy)

Snoozy are about 2 feet tall, and are shaped like a white translucent blob of goo, forming a basic head, body, and arm, with the body trailing behind. The head has an oversized nightcap covering most of it, colored dark blue, with white dots as stars. The end of the nightcap has a hanging moon from it. The lone arm carries a thick white pillow by the corner, with some down leaking out of a tear. The coloring scheme of its main body changes with its version. Snoozier are red, and Snooziest are blue. A menacing black Snoozy DS has an additional feature of serrated teeth forming a giant jaw. EX forms are darker shades of their originals. Snoozy attack by flailing their white pillows around and spreading their apparent sleepiness around. They start their attack by teleporting up to their targets. The teleport counts as a dodge if utilized correctly. They then teleport back to their original spot, and do not move otherwise. They may use their secondary full-heal at any time, though they are more likely to do so when they are injured. Snoozy viruses only appear when there is cover to hide behind, and will stay behind this cover for the entirety of the battle except to attack. They will not appear otherwise. If their cover is destroyed, they will attempt to flee starting next turn if they do not have a specified object chip to be dispensed first.

"Alright, that was a little closer for comfort than I would've liked, but good job," said Aurora, as her partner approached with a guilty-looking grin on his face. In her hands, she was holding the Snoozier's pillow, which looked somewhat out of place in the middle of the snowscape.

"Sorry, sorry. My bad, I'll be more careful next time-- What is that?" asked Eternalis, gesturing towards the thing that Aurora was holding in her hands.

Aurora held up her prize. "This? One of the viruses dropped it. Seems like a pillow."

"Virus designs sure don't get any less weird..." muttered Eternalis, as the pillow disappeared into the air and was converted into chip data. "Anyway, you were saying something about a settlement earlier?"

"Yeah, just up ahead. Let's go see what they've got. Come on, Sparky," said Aurora, beckoning the hoverboard forward. Sparky's head barked joyfully as his boosters fired up again, and he lunged rapidly towards their destination without so much as a warning. His rider was less than pleased as she rocketed along with him. "W-Whaaaaaa! Down, Sparky, down!"

With both of his Support Programs vanishing into the distance, Eternalis was left awkwardly sitting in the snow. "Heheh, you'd better not get left behind, Eternalis," commented Harke. The operator received a sigh and a resigned chuckle from his Navi, who promptly disappeared into the air, rapidly traveling in the same direction as well.

[Rogue Battle 2 - Ready! Bounty Set: MetalCragger.]
[Eternalis.EXE: 400 HP, Aurora.EXE: 100HP, Sparky.SP: 60 HP.]
As the group moved on, Sparky in particular eager to be off, they ended up moving more or less towards the lights in the distance that aurora had seen. The weather had cleared up a little bit, as much as it ever did in this deeper part of the Sharo Rogues; it wasn't snowing at least, but it was still heavy with clouds and a chill wind. The ridge on their right gradually fell away as they walked, until the settled into more level terrain, and what looked like the broad expanse of a flat ice-field beyond — it might be a lake or something similar, if it ever wasn't frozen.

Ahead, near the edge of the ice flat, the lights they'd been moving towards resolved into what did, indeed, look to be a small settlement of some sort. There were buildings with lights in the windows; small, blunt structures designed to withstand raging weather and heavy storms, and all constructed out of a white material that blended well. The trio could get a decent look at the place as they drew nearer because it was on a slight downward slope to their position; otherwise the village would have been obscured by some fairly well fortified-looking ice block walls that were reinforced with pack snow, and what looked like some sort of auxiliary bracing structure on the inside, from the parts of the wall they could see over.

There were also, a keen eye might notice, an array of defences and weaponry monitoring the wall of the village in a full circle, apparently ready to protect from incursions, though they were too far to make out any salient details just yet. There were a couple of shapes moving around inside, between the sturdy little buildings — they looked like navigators, probably.

There wasn't much time for the trio to take in any more details, for now... pressing matters were between them and the village in the form of more rough and heavy-looking viral foes. To the left and a little further down the slope from them, a lone Fortwarrior had built up a retaining embankment of hard snow to create a level space for his snow fort, on the slope. It had been facing the village below, but now the virus was quickly rebuilding more of the fort wall around to face Eternalis and his allies instead.

From the right, near the edge of the ice, an Aquagear had begun to bustle towards them as well, and stopped once it reached the snow, sizing the trio up. More worrisome, perhaps, was a heavy duty gunnery turret that was partially camouflaged between a couple of weathered pine trees. Like the fort virus, it had been pointed towards the village walls, but now swivelled in place, bringing its gunnery to bear on the closer threats instead. Directly ahead of Eternalis, a rumble in the exposed rocky protrusions announced two more MetalCraggers unearthing themselves from the ground and shaking off errant rock, ice and snow.

The wind at their backs howled louder for a few moments as the viruses squared themselves up in a hostile manner and with it several chunks of the icy ground behind them fell away into blackness. A dark shape rose from the void, shadowy sword ready and with a single eye that glared at the three in turn. Diplomacy was probably off the table for this one.

FortWarriorFortWarrior (FortFighter)

A short little humanoid virus no more than 2 feet tall, the FortFighter uses it stature to its advantage in its combat style of choice: snowball fighting. Being able to endlessly produce snow forts and snowballs, FortFighter will harass you endlessly with below-freezing balls of pain. Its body is outfitted in miniaturized winter gear, including a snow cap, winter coat, and snowshoes. Its only exposure comes from its head, which is just a grey sphere with two big eyes on it. Its hands, which only have 3 fingers each, are a bit disproportionately large compared to the rest of its body. The difference between the virus levels is the outfit: FortFighter is green, FortWarrior is blue, and FortChampion is red.

Teleporting before and after their attacks does not require an action. They will always end a turn while floating over Missing or Hole Terrain. Basher viruses are the top-tier of the stationary gunnery viruses with an unmatched single-shot damage output among the normal viruses. They are also the rarest of their class, and appear only after battle 5. They also never appear in large numbers in a normal battle, meaning the ratio of total viruses to Bashers should be at least 4 to 1. The attack cycle of Bashers is 2 actions long, regardless of which attack they use. The first attack requires one action to charge before firing, and the second attack executes twice in succession. If they are stunned, they resume their attack cycle where it was halted once the stun wears off. They don't move, and don't dodge.

As Eternalis dropped in next to Aurora and Sparky, who were idly hovering about the slope into the settlement area, the trio looked around, with the only noise being a gentle wind, as well as Sparky panting from his sudden rapid sprint. "Yeah, those definitely look like buildings... though it's hard to make out what they look like even from here. Hope they don't mind if we stroll in for a visit?" said Eternalis, craning his head forward slightly.

"Well, those walls don't look very welcoming at all. Hang on, I think... hm. Kind of looks like a bunch of defensive installations inside, too. They seem to have the place pretty well-fortified. Is this a public sector, Harke?" said Aurora.

Pulling up a diagnostic screen, Harke scrolled down on it to read one of the lines. "Hmm... I'm pretty sure you guys are still in public address space. It is Rogue Sharo, though, so better safe than sorry. Try to clear out of there and see if there's anything on that ice lake instead."

Eternalis continued to peer at the little walled-off area. "Hm... I'm so curious, though. I think I can see some people walking around in there, too. Can't we just walk up to the gate and ask? Though I guess I don't want to get into any trouble."

"I think we're getting a few troublemakers anyway -- we've got a few more viruses around the place," said Aurora. Sure enough, a rumble in a nearby rock formation revealed two more of the Craggers. The swiveling motion of a gun turret over yonder, the sound of ice crumbling behind them, and before long, they were thoroughly surrounded by a veritable posse of threats.

Eternalis whistled. "Well, these all look pretty tough. Nothing we can't handle, though. Priority, Aurora?"

"I'm taking out that Aquagear in the back. It's actually got a lot of punch if we let it loose. StepSword, Harke?"

"On its way," replied the operator. With his response, Aurora turned towards her partner and nodded. The board beneath her feet whirred in readiness as she tapped her foot on a certain point on it. Immediately, the dim whir turned into a deafening blast as she and Sparky blasted forth towards their target. The trip didn't take very long -- a normal sprint by foot would have taken them a bit more than 5 seconds at full speed. However, by the end of the millisecond, Aurora was already brandishing the StepSword's gleaming blue sword at full length in front of the Aquagear, striking at it at with a sweeping horizontal slash.

The sword vanished into fragments of light at the end of the slash, though Aurora wasn't quite done yet. "Arf!" barked Sparky, as he swerved around the virus, allowing Aurora to use the momentum from her sword attack to segue into another, releasing two charges of electricity towards the Aquagear's flank. By the end, the highspeed assault was punctuated by another trip up to the skies, utilizing Sparky's unfathomable bursts of speed to their fullest.

"Alright, I'll take the Katana and GolemHit for these two -- I'll leave you to decide for the rest, Harke."
"Got it."

Meanwhile, back on the ground, Eternalis was wielding his own sword, though it looked a lot more solid, being formed out of his gelatinous body into the shape of a bastard sword. With the support system from Aurora already on a small screen in his periphery, he was prepared for the black shadow that had just flanked them, and lunged at it with weapon at the ready. One diagonal strike, followed up by a sweeping horizontal slash completed the attack on the Blackmare, and he directed his attention to the rocky golems that had emerged just ahead of them.

"C'mon!" he taunted, as he turned in a rapid spin to kick up a bunch of snow near his feet. However, the snow wasn't simply for show -- it contained a piece of his own slime inside, and began rapidly gathering up snow around it to form a gigantic fist made of frost. The frosty fist sailed through the air before landing near the golems with a solid crash.

As the ground beneath him rumbled, Eternalis' little screen beeped once, showing the position of another nearby enemy. He hadn't quite noticed it before, but there was a small virus hiding behind a little snowy fort it had made for itself. Suddenly, his left side began to transform, producing a wide-mouthed cannon barrel out of its chaotic structure. The voice of his operator piped up through the crackling voice link at the end of the transfer.

"Got you two more. Lay it on 'em!"

"All right!" he responded, releasing the power of the PhoenixShot towards the fortified virus in the form of a gout of fire. The fire seemed to have a mind of its own as it flew forward, headed straight for its target like a hungry bird of prey. Aurora's screen beeped once again, and his eyes led him to the hidden gunnery turret snugly sitting between two tall pines, its colors slightly masking it with the trees' colors.

Not wanting to waste any more time, Eternalis then vanished into the air, teleporting all the way across the field towards the turret's flank. Reappearing in mid-air, his pose was that of a martial artist in mid-kick as he swung his leg out in a wide arc. The attack was more than just physical, however, as it expelled a powerful gale of wind from the bases of his feet in a shockwave in front of him. As he landed from his spinning kick, Eternalis' body undulated in response from the wind's kickback, swirling about in his vaguely humanoid form to repair any holes blasted in him while he took a breather.

Curiosity about the unexpected settlement aside, the trio had their hands full with a new group of hostiles and they quickly set to work. As they surveyed and planned first tactics, the tiny snow warrior built up his fort, then did what many little snow wielding brats are known for, and hucked a snowball at the cute girl. Aurora, uninterested in these antics, was already off like a shot, and left the little hooligan in the dust. Her sword strike connected cleaning, slicing into the Aquagear even as it sized up its targets, and it revised its initial plans, trying to turn to face Aurora and sparky as they circled around.

Back where they had started, the Blackmare warped up close behind Eternalis' back, creating a dark hole in the ground beneath itself as it did, but before it could try to swing a weapon, Eternalis rounded on it with a series of quick, efficient slashes of his own, dicing the shadow into fragments.

Attempting to track with the orbiting programs in its face, the Aquagear grew frustrated and summoned a potent geyser of water to erupt from the frozen ground, trying to douse the pair of them before they could escape, but sparky was quicker, gaining altitude as he spiralled up and out of harm's way while Aurora retaliated with a couple of quick shots that were enough to put an end to the aggressive virus..

The two craggers, slow as they were, had only ow approached Eternalis and raised massive fist in an effort to crush the amorphous navigator. they weren't particularly accurate, but between the two of them, one managed to connect a shuddering hammerblow on him with a wet slap. the force sent the snow flying and traced the ground below with cracks. The frozen ground creaked threateningly. Eternalis, unfazed by heavy blows, had an answer of his own, paying both of the heavy metal viruses back in kind with a strike powerful enough to destroy them both.

A snowball flew past him a second later, thudding into the snow as the little warrior turned his attention to the nearer target, and Eternalis answered back with a scorching phoenix shot. The fortwarrior was perhaps a bit more resilient than expected, however; the shot destroyed his snowy defence, but in doing so, converted the ground below to solid ice and raised an obscuring mist all around the area where the virus was playing. It began to rebuild its fortress from the suddenly sturdier packed snow and ice, unharmed.

More importantly, while all this had been going on, the heavy artillery had been making slow powering-up sounds as it charged a series of devastating shots, picking out tracer lines for each of aurora, Eternalis and Sparky. Eternalis teleported behind it, but he wasn't quite fast enough in his strike to stop it from firing. the shot targeting Eternalis himself missed as he evaded its targeting sight, and aurora, with just enough visual notice from their high vantage point, was able to twist her way out of the path of the shot meant for her, with Sparky's nimble assistance. The ever helpful SP, however, didn't spare enough time or consideration for his own safety and the third round impacted with his underside as their evasive manoeuvres didn't quite avail him.

Eternalis' windracket, an instant later, was enough to topple the turret and break it utterly, as well as obliterating the two pine trees it was camped between, but as much as he had healing power to spare, there was just no time to send any of it to sparky as the crushing blast knocked him from the sky and the net in one fell blow. Unfortunately, this also left Aurora falling towards the ground, but the blast impact had also thrown her to the side as well, and it looked like mostly soft-ish snow below, so she would probably land okay.

"Gah!" exclaimed Aurora, as she felt the footing beneath her feet suddenly become unstable and vanish in the space of a second. The powerful blast that the Smasher slug had fired her way had barely missed her, but it had decommissioned her ride, and she was rapidly losing altitude. The wind blasted past her cheeks as she plummeted towards the snow below, but she was high enough that she managed to blurt out one short exclamation. "Harke, DashAttack!"

Almost immediately, the chip found its way into her processes, and was activated immediately. Invisible forces contorted her body into a straightened pose as they boosted her already increasing kinetic energy into even higher levels. "Rrrrrrgh!" grunted Aurora, as the burst of speed stretched her body to its thresholds, directing the velocity she had already picked up into a powerful charge. Rocketing through the air, Aurora managed to swerve off her initial trajectory, barely skimming the ground as she flew towards the last virus on the field. Crackling energy filled her field of vision, and two balls of electricity gathered within her balled up fists. Headed on a crash course for her last target, she drew back her arms, before launching the electrical charges forward, in order to coincide with her bodily missile attack.

Reacting quickly to her unexpected peril, Aurora get the chip she needed to pull out of her fall and make use of the momentum. Nevertheless it was tricky to guide that into an attack that was useful, and though it brought her safely to ground and close to the remaining virus, the burst of speed wasn't controlled enough to actually strike the snow-wielding creature while he finished reconstructing his temporary fortress.

Aurora wasn't done with him yet, however, and laid in with her crackling electrical attacks. Either one would have been enough to finish the virus off, but even though her strikes were precise and accurate, the more solid construction of the icy fort withstood both of her assaults before it collapsed; the ice it was made from had proven much sturdier than simple snow.

The virus, seeing such a certain violent end in its future with aurora, began to run as soon as its fort gave way, hurling one last snowball over its shoulder at her as he moved away. It sailed past her harmlessly, Looking back over its shoulder towards her as it ran, though, the virus didn't see the slim bead of red light latch onto its chest, coming from the defences of the nearby village. There was a distant thump of sound as something fired, before the running virus exploded in a sudden burst of data and scattered snow.

This would leave the two navigators on a cleared field, though sans their canine companion. Far off, a figure on the top of the village wall had appeared, and now seemed to be waving towards them. At this distance, it was hard to make out, but it seemed to be gesturing for them to approach with some urgency.

With the last bit of her attacks landing on the virus's fort, Aurora stumbled into a nearby snowbank, cushioning her fall by a little bit. The cold snow brushed up against her cheek as she pushed herself up, only to find the last virus starting to flee. A snowball sailed over her shoulder as she watched it scramble around to flee from the area. However, the faint trail of a laser sight landed on its back, and Aurora could only instinctively shrink back into her snowbank before it erupted into a mass of data.

The deafening silence that followed was brief, as it was punctuated by a voice coming over the communication link. "Hey, are you guys okay?" Soon after, Aurora saw Eternalis' form materialize over her position, extending a hand towards her.

"Thanks," she muttered, pulling herself back up to full height. Eternalis smiled as best as his jagged maw could manage, and turned towards the video feed that had just opened between them and their operator.

"We're all right, Harke. Someone in that facility just shot out some artillery support for us. Seems like they want us there, judging from that guy waving at us," said Eternalis. Aurora raised an eyebrow, looking in the same direction as her partner. Sure enough, there was a small figure out in the distance that was waving to them. At that distance, her analysis couldn't confirm much of anything, but it was most likely a Navigator signature, and they didn't seem to be hostile.

"Is Sparky all right?" chimed in Aurora, looking past Eternalis' shoulder to the feed window.

A spirited bark in the background half-answered her question, though Harke proceeded to respond nonetheless. "He's all right, just a bit shaken. Seems to want to go back in, but I'll fix him up a bit so he'll be a bit more durable next time you go in. Try to see what those guys want in the meantime."

"Got it," said Eternalis, allowing the feed window to turn inactive. Turning towards Aurora, he gestured towards the fortified area ahead. "Looks like we're going there anyway," he said.

"Maybe I should scout ahead with the camouflage. It'd be better if we don't fall into some trap," suggested Aurora.

Eternalis shook his head. "No, they had to have already seen you anyway. If they're the shady sort they'd be a lot more suspicious of us being one member short. C'mon, let's just go," he said. Aurora shrugged as she followed through the snowscape, curious as to what lay ahead of them in the settlement.

[Rogue Battle 3 - Ready? Bounty Set: MetalCragger.]
[Eternalis.EXE: 400 HP, Aurora.EXE: 100HP.]
Once Aurora and Eternalis had sorted themselves out and checked on Sparky's condition, this left them with the issue of the fortifications that had assisted them, albeit waiting until the last moment to do so and too late for Sparky's untimely exit from the network. They agreed that the best option was to approach openly rather than trying anything subvert and as she pair moved towards the settlement there was the inevitable feeling of a number of automatic defences clocking them. None seemed immediately hostile, however, and they arrived at a reinforced gateway before long. Up closer, the settlement seemed larger than they might have guessed from earlier glances, but it blended in with the snowy backdrop well, and would have been surprisingly easy to overlook if they hadn't been on the fairly precise path that they had approached from.

A navigator phased out through the gate, and a keen eye would be able to guess that what they were seeing was either a decoy or an illusion, with the navi responsible for it still safely behind the closed gates for now. Despite this, he waved, then put one hand across his chest and inclined his head. He looked to have slightly more human details than an average normal navi, but as far as custom designs went he was likely very much on the low end of advancement; either a very low grade design, or else a very old one that had never been upgraded. His body suit and armour was mostly shades of green.

"Greetings, and sorry for the weapon turrets. What brings you to this location? We seek no trouble, but we will defend ourselves from aggression. If you are unoperated and seeking refuge, we can provide sanctuary, but please understand that we must look to the safety of this haven first." His tone was formal and polite; there was a slightly apologetic edge in it that suggested he guessed Eternalis and Aurora weren't here to make trouble for them, but still intended to do the proper checks. He rolled his shoulders, then made small gesture as though brushing the formalities aside.

"I'm sorry that we didn't respond fast enough to assist your other companion, but I've been informed that an emergency jack-out was traced, so I suppose that answers my first question on its own. What can we do for you? If you're operated navigators out busting and looking for challenges, there may be some issues you could assist us with nearby." With the formalities out of the way, his voice grew a little friendlier, but it seemed as though they weren't about to be let inside right away.

"Thanks for having us," said Aurora, feeling the cursory glances of the settlement's defensive array on her to be slightly unnerving. Having been mostly operated in the shadows of Sharo Net in the past, the amount of locked-on warning circles that faded in and out of her visor's HUD only served to add to her anxiety. Her midsection began to emit an odd gurgle, fluctuating into some fluid form as she stole a few glances here and there. Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder and jumped slightly, though she didn't have to turn to know who it was.

Eternalis stepped forward slightly, keeping his hand on Aurora's shoulder as he spoke. "We're operated, yes. You guys called us over and we responded, so I assumed we had something we could help you out with? The place doesn't seem to be burning up in flames or anything," he laughed.
Still standing in front of the gates, the decoy navi nodded his head to the pair again, and after a few more moments the majority of the instalments along the wall returned to neutral positions.

"Well, I'm glad you're not hostile. Things have been a bit on edge lately, and a lot of people have been worried that the sanctuary might be in danger. Have to be careful, you understand. Let me start over. You can call me James; it's the name I take for myself. I am the public liaison for this community. We represent a safe place for navigators without operators to find refuge and protection from dangers that might be seeking them, and most only stumble upon us if they know where they are looking for already. If you are just randomly busting, then you've been unusually lucky. If you were here to cause harm to anyone inside, then I'm sure you would have made a move by now, but please understand that, as you are operated, we must still be cautious. I mean no offence." Here, the illusion folded his arms and appraised the two of them again, nodding to himself. He hadn't made any offer to shake their hands as yet, but it might be safe to assume that was a more difficult process if he was only presenting a decoy to them on the outside of the gate.

"As it is, there is a matter you could help us with, possibly, and if you're out virus-busting for your own benefit, I'm sure investigating it will be worth your while, as well as having our thanks. The reason we've been so on edge just recently is that the normal viruses of the area have been almost overwhelmed by a sudden upsurge in the population of one particular virus family, and many people inside fear it might be something orchestrated by someone who has discovered the sanctuary and wishes us harm. It's not an unfounded worry, for some of the navigators we shelter here. If you're interested in looking into it, I'd recommend you circle around the town and then head west, further into the mountains. That's where the thickest density of the Craggers seem to be coming from." After a moment looking in that direction, he glanced back and then sighed softly.

"We run a fairly tight means set-up here, and we don't really have any resources spare to reward you for helping, I'm afraid, but I understand that, for operated navigators, the things you're able to obtain from the virus busting itself are usually considered reward enough for the effort. You would be doing us a favour if you looked into it, though, and you'd have our gratitude if it can be resolved."

with the business end of the greeting done, James waited to see what Aurora and Eternalis might have to say, but if they both felt like following the lead offered, he'd let them go with a nod and let the clone fade from sight when they stepped away from the gates. If they wanted to stay and talk more, or ask questions, he seemed perfectly happy to chat — it did appear to be his job, after all.

Of course, if they wanted to keep the level of challenge to something more sedate, the duo could also use this information to politely decline and take their wanderings in a different direction, and avoid the apparent source of the over-populated viruses.
As the automated defenses retracted one by one, Aurora could feel a weight being lifted off of her shoulders, and a small relieved hiss escaped her lips. Eternalis' hand left her shoulder as well, almost as if on cue. The explanation that followed made her raise an eyebrow, though her eyes wandered slightly as she listened on. Instincts caused her to idly work out potential breach points and security posts, though from what she could tell, the place was indeed as well-fortified as it looked. "Ah, okay. We've been hunting those Craggers ourselves on a request, it's probably not sheer luck that led us here. Word has gotten out about the infestation, apparently," said Eternalis. "If it'll help you guys out, we'd be happy to root out whatever's causing the infestation. How about it, Aurora?"

His partner blinked slightly, snapped out of her brief fugue into mental penetration testing. "O-Oh, sure, I'm all right with helping out," said Aurora, still half-aware of her situation.

Upon her agreement, Eternalis cheerfully patted Aurora on the shoulder and turned heel, heading towards the indicated western direction. "Great! We'll be heading out, then. If we find our way back, we'll brief you on what we find there," he said, with Aurora on his trail. The start of the trek was rather quiet, but after they had covered a bit of distance, Eternalis piped up, "You all right?"

"... Mm, yeah, I'm fine." A brief pause, then she continued, "... It's just a little unnerving to see so many of those automated defenses pointed at you after so long out of the trade. Sorry. I don't exactly have an endlessly regenerating body like someone here," before punctuating the end of her sentence with a playful jab at Eternalis' arm. Her fist bounced off of the pliable material. Eternalis laughed, returning the mock punch with one of his own as they made their way towards the indicated area.

[Rogue Battle 3 - Ready. Bounty Set: MetalCragger.]
[Eternalis.EXE: 400 HP, Aurora.EXE: 100HP.]
With their minds made up, Eternalis and Aurora headed out in search of the source, or at least the suspected source, of their bounty problem. Heading further into the mountainous region left the pair climbing steadily through low, snow-covered hills and having to pick their path between the thicker drifts with varying degrees of care. The weather, at least, had cleared up a bit by now and it was no longer snowing, but the wind was still typical Sharo biting, and showed no signs of easing up.

"Heey! Wait up!!" A small voice carried through the winds from behind them, and if either looked back they'd notice that, as well as the settlement already being out of sight due to the obscuring terrain, a tiny shape was nipping nimbly through the snow towards them, jumping up high every few moments to wave an arm. It was hard to make out any solid details at first, because the predominate ones were that she was small, and covered in perfectly camouflaging snow-white fur. A more careful eye would be able to pick out features that made her look a lot like a snow-bunny of some kind, including the long ears and whiskers, and if one had the memory for odd occurrences, might certainly recognise her as the same girl that they'd encountered before. Despite the climate, she was wearing a simple white band top that only covered her chest and left her shoulders and midriff bare, and a long white duster skirt, both of which blended in with her fur, and the snow, remarkably. Given the fur, she probably wasn't cold anyway.

"Wait a second!!" Whether they particularly wanted to or not, the tiny creature caught up to them with surprising speed, and ended up standing only about three feet tall when she drew near enough to wave in a more friendly manner. "Before you go, I just want to give you something. I'm sort of off duty now, I was just visiting, but those guys back there, they don't like to ask for help and try to keep it all hush-hush and hidden, so, I wanted to thank you both for looking into this! These are from me." She handed each of them a small wrapped item that appeared to be a chocolate replica of a snow rabbit, wrapped in protective white fabric, with a red ribbon. She grinned and winked "It's a tradition. Don't worry, this part will interest you more..." With that, she pulled a tiny blue crystal from the front of her top and flicked it onto the ground where it quickly began to unpack itself into chip data that Eternalis would be free to collect right away. "Hope it's a good one, and remember: it doesn't matter if you believe in mystical gift-giving bunnies or not. What matters is that they believe in you, hehe!" The strange girl stepped back, giggling then waved to them both and turned, dashing back into the snow and quickly disappearing as her camouflaged colour scheme quickly blended into the background.

With the strange anomaly passed, the duo were free to continue their search, but it didn't take long before they were interrupted again, and this time by figures far less friendly. The first things to see were a pair of signal probes perched ont he beaks to the two highest hills directly in front of them. They looked metallic and highly technical as they scanned the area, a number of small lights flickering off and on in different patters as they scanned. Closer, set into the the crags on the left, a ColdHead virus rested, while slower still two particularly sleepy looking viruses had settled into the snow; one was squishy and cuddled a pillow behind a broad bank of snow, while the other, beside it, looked more like a large, shaggy, snow-covered mound that breathed in and out with long, greatly exaggerated breaths.

In the gap between the two hills, a single Puffy-type virus drifted, though it faced the duo as they approached and prepared to launch its signature bubble attack as it saw them. the other hill looked mostly clear, at first, until another, fairly large, MaetalCragger pulled itself out of the drifts and raised one fist threateningly. Higher up on the right hill, a small glitter of blue amidst the snow might also catch their eyes.

LowBlowLowBlow (SnowBlow)

SnowBlow viruses are immobile. Snowblow viruses attack by first inhaling to draw the enemy to themselves and their viral allies, and then spit a series of 3 tornadoes at their foes. The inhaling phase of the attack requires an action, and the tornado spitting requires a second action. Thus these viruses require two consecutive actions to complete one attack. All SnowBlow viruses have access to Northwind battlechip data.

MetalCraggerMetalCragger (Cragger)

Craggers are pretty easy targets, given their size. They also move very rarely, and when they do they move slowly. Their dodge rate is abysmal. They generally rely on their HardBody defense, which reduces non-break damage by half, but doubles break damage. They have high attack power and AoE, but their accuracy is generally bad as their attacks are easy to follow and take time to deliver. Their attack is executed as a Drop Attack, and thus attacks from above, and not head-on. Targets caught underground within this attack's AoE range take an additional 50 Null damage that ignores all defenses.

"Hmm... Doesn't look like anything's happening up these hills," said Eternalis, his head bobbing to and fro like a strange-looking bobblehead as he surveyed the area. With Sharo being the blank landscape that it was, it was difficult to see if they were even following the right path that they had been pointed to. Nevertheless, they continued forward, with their only indicator being the slow incline that they were on.

"Nah, don't worry, if you guys keep an eye out, we'll probably find it eventually," encouraged Harke.

Meanwhile, Aurora was quietly focusing on her displays, with one of her hands brought up to her earpiece with a concentrated expression on her face. Moments later, she elbowed Eternalis, gesturing behind them. With all the snow in the way, Eternalis found it difficult to tell who they were being followed by, but judging from Aurora's slightly relaxed stance, he felt it was less of a threat than it seemed. Their prediction proved to be correct, as their visitor turned out to be another rabbit Navi. "Oh, er, it wasn't any big deal..." he said, before having a small wrapped chocolate rabbit shoved into his arms. Confused, he began to turn it about and examine it.

"A traditio-- What are we supposed to do with these?" he said, watching Aurora receive one as well before the rabbit pulled out her real gift, which decrypted rather quickly, and transferred itself into their PET.

"Oh! I think I remember those, some cousins of ours used to hand those out with some chocolate eggs for a Netopian holiday or some other; you don't really do anything with them other than eat them, I guess. Can't remember what the holiday was called, either," commented Harke. "Wish I could eat those, they look pretty good."

"... I think I'll save it for later," said Aurora, transferring her little wrapped rabbit to the PET. As she did so, she looked to her side, where Eternalis was unwrapping the rabbit for all to see. The delicate carving details would have been much more impressive, had they been in the real world. Unfortunately, nobody really had the time to appreciate them now, as Eternalis gently lifted the bunny by its bottom and shoved it down his gullet, almost literally in one gulp. The expressions on Harke and Aurora's faces weren't quite able to be described, but they most certainly turned to mirth a few seconds later, when the rabbit continued to float about inside of the blue Navi.

Their small skit ended relatively quickly with the arrival of new adversaries. The Satellites' laser targeting blips were quite visible against the snowy ground, prompting Aurora to began shifting into the landscape herself with her camouflage function. However, her voice was still loud and clear to Eternalis and Harke through the voice link. "So, how are we doing this?" she said.

"Those three out in front seem like good targets, WindRacket them and we'll go from there," said Harke, with the appropriate chip immediately slotted in.

"Alright... I'll take the ClusterShot too, then. We'll also need a Sensor to deal with either the blue baldie, or the Cragger," said Aurora. "We'll flank that Satellite up there and figure things out from there."

"Pull the Satellites together with a MagBolt and then do your thing, sounds good?" said Harke.

"Sounds good, I'll tag you in on my signal, Aurora," said Eternalis, already receiving the chip data from his operator. Without wasting any time, he dashed in, his left side morphing into a giant hand fan-like structure. With the Sharoan winds as blustery as they were, it was easy to leverage its strength as the winds flowed under its spread. With the snowbank in his sights, he threw the Racket out in a large arc, creating a huge cutting gale through the enemy lines.

"Aurora!" he yelled out, reaching out with his hand. As soon as he felt the invisible touch of his partner's hand, he leapt into the air, vanishing in the blink of an eye. The warp's destination was soon revealed to be atop the leftside hill, where the blue warrior made his appearance. His WindRacket had expired, and in its place, an enormous horseshoe-like arm began to charge up, before being pointed towards the Satellite on the other side of the hill. Behind him, a small orb of electricity began to materialize, splitting up into eight smaller orbs that began to revolve around each other. They didn't stay that way for long, however, quickly lurching towards the other Satellite, as well as the Buffy down below.

Eternalis' magnetized arm exhausted its current quickly, making way for yet another weapon-- a huge curved scimitar, its edge still quite lethally sharp despite being made out of his pudding-like body. The blade was tossed out quite haphazardly, with Eternalis relying on its weight to crush the mechanical Satellite viruses, which would ideally have either been grouped up by his MagBolt attack, or halved in numbers from the outset by Aurora's ClusterShot barrage. His body shifted about oddly as he attacked, absorbing damage as it did with relative impunity.

While Eternalis was demonstrating his best impression of a medieval berserker, the snow next to him began to shift, and a tiny KillerEye rose from under the snow. Its eye was pointed down the small hill, towards the blue ColdHead on the side of the hill.

The LowBlow starts the battle off by inhaling, pulling Eternalis and Aurora closer to it. Which is just fine for Eternalis as he whacks the LowBlow, the Snoozier, and the entire left side Snow Bank with a WindRacket. When the flurry of snow settles down, the ground is covered in an icy sheen, and the LowBlow, the Snoozier, and the Snow Bank were all gone. Aurora went invisible and slow, as the ColdHead2 stood there, guarding itself by keeping its shell closed. And finally the MetalCragger moved its arm ponderously downward, sending a stone fist falling from the sky. The big hand missed the two navis.

The next thing to happen is Eternalis and Aurora teleporting behind the currently inactive Satellite2 A. Surprisingly, it immediately activates and whirls around to the try to get a Lock-On. A laser beam targeting system sweeps through the area that Eternalis and Aurora occupy, and highlights Aurora. The beam ignores Aurora's invisibility, and since she is slowed down by both her signature and being on the snow, she is struck by the light. Her invisibility is nullified, leaving her quite visible with a target painted on her body. The Satellite leaps high into the air and sends a barrage of energy bolts down upon Aurora. Six out of ten shots hits Aurora (-36). The floating Buffy-A spits a bubble at Eternalis and Aurora. Even coming out of the teleport, the bubble pops onto Eternalis, and spreads onto Aurora, who fails to dodge again (-20 to both). Thankfully, the water doesn't freeze the navis in the snow.

Eternalis pulled out an electromagnetic attack on the second Satellite2. Which struck soundly and pulled the virus over the gap between the hills and deposited the virus near the first Satellite2 as it landed. It was getting kind of crowded on the left hilltop with two navis and two viruses sharing it. Aurora launched eight electric orbs, divided into two groups, at the Buffy-A and Satellite2 B. One of the two orbs hits the Buffy-A floating over the ice, and burns it severely, cutting its life in half. The Satellite2 is much less lucky, and five of the six slam into it, deleting its already damaged body. The Cragger attacks for a second time, but its inaccurate dropping-palm attack is just as ineffective as before, and hits no one.

As the Buffy-A prepares to blow a second bubble and the ColdHead2 charging its cannon, Eternalis attacks the grounded Satellite. With two swings of his katana, and three slashes appearing on the body of the virus, the Satellite2 is deleted. The Buffy-A spits out a bubble while the ColdHead2 fires its cannon. The cannon shot misses, but Eternalis gets wet (-20), Aurora managing to finally get out of the way of an attack. Thankfully, no freeze effect on Eternalis.

Eternalis ended the first Turn with deploying a Sensor2 and setting the trip-beam between him and the ColdHead2. Anything that moved through the trip-beam would suffer a terrible fate. He also healed himself up to full (+40).

SnowBlow viruses are immobile. Snowblow viruses attack by first inhaling to draw the enemy to themselves and their viral allies, and then spit a series of 3 tornadoes at their foes.

As the Satellite's attack wound down, and the Buffy's bubble had erupted, Aurora winced as she retaliated towards the rotund Buffy with a pair of rapidly-fired thunderbolts. As the deafening sound of its power echoed through the small valley between the two hills, and the sweet, pungent smell from the rapidly ionized air stung her nose, she stopped to examine the damage on her body -- only to find that the large gaping holes blasted through her torso had closed up completely. Turning around, she saw her partner flashing her a thumbs up, as he fired a similar-looking thunderbolt down the other side of the hill.

"Eternalis, StepSword and GolemHit coming your way," Harke's voice said over the link.

"On it," said Eternalis, hopping to attention as he vanished from the hilltop, reappearing swiftly before the iron golem. His body was twisted in the middle of a leap, with his right hand grasping a large sword made of blue slime. The blade sliced its way through the air with ease, and as it completed a single slash, the blade disintegrated, but Eternalis continued spinning, his sight locked on the golem as he executed the follow-up attack. Now, his left side gurgled ominously as it stretched far out from his body, with the end forming a massive ball of goo.

Spikes jutted out of the ball, and the tether morphed into a plain chain design, revealing his weapon as an enormous morningstar. The spiked ball crashed down onto the Cragger, causing the surrounding snow to erupt upwards in a magnificent display of force. The blue warrior landed on the snow neatly afterwards, his summoned weapon dissolving back into his body as it began to repair itself from any possible damage it had incurred during his forceful attack.

With Eternalis backing her up and patching her injuries, Aurora was quick to snipe the Buffy virus before it could attempt to douse anyone else, the electrical arcing of her attack more than enough to take care of it. In the same moment, Eternalis took a shot of his own, hammering the ColdHead that had missed him before with a bolt that slammed home before it could close its guard again.

This left the two of them free to converge on their final, hard-bodied target. Aurora took another quick shot, though it shrugged off a large portion of the attack's power, while Eternalis teleported in to slice at it from much closer range. Solid exterior or not, the powerful sweep still cut deeply, rending and damaging the virus despite its rock hard construction. The Cragger turned on Eternalis and attempted to retaliate with a devastating pummelling of its own, but the gooey wonder was too mobile for it to hit cleanly despite good aim on its part. A second later, Eternalis responded with a supremely overkill amount of crushing force that shattered the already damaged virus into just so much detritus and rubble.

The hillsides were cleared for now, and the pair would be able to press forward for more of the over-populous virus after collecting their spoils of battle.
