Desert Deuce

[Previous Topic: Netfrica]

The entrance to the small ToiletComp's area lit up briefly, as the tall figure of SliceMan walked in from the transfer pad. The Navi looked rather uncertain as he looked around. It certainly didn't look like anything was toilet-themed in the area; everywhere looked as arid as the Netfrican deserts that his operator often drove through. "A-Are you sure this is the place, Norton?" SliceMan stuttered out.

"There's nothing else in the toilet that's got a jack-in point. Looks like it's way too dry in there. Must be something with the main processor that got hijacked by those little critters. Go check it out," said Norton, as he sighed in irritation.

"O-Okay... I'm going," said SliceMan, as he explored the area for any anomalies.

[Battle 1 - Ready!]
[SliceMan.EXE: 100 HP]
The dry arid climes of the netfrican... toilet, greeted SliceMan with an extra thorough blast of dry wind and dust. there was little around to see at first, but as he wandered ins each of the problem, a faint sound of rustling could be hear from somewhere off behind a rocky formation. without anything else to look at, drawing closer would reveal a distinctly odd sight for the cuisine-themed explorer.

"Meep?"
"...meep..."

A small cluster of viruses were gathered in a rough circle around a small pit in the dry earth. They looked mostly like regular metools, which was an oddity in itself, except that they all seemed to have added beige, dust-toned safari hats over the top of their own helmets, and they all looked quite dishevelled. Most had a few ragged twigs and leaves sticking out of various places on their hats. It looked almost like they were trying to mine for water, but with no success, judging by the size of the pit they were around, and their collection of hopeful and despondent looks.

One turned to face SliceMan and 'Meeped' with alarm. The others looked up as well, and they all turned, now jumping up and down excitedly and making small viral noises while they waved their pickaxes in the air. then one of them threw its pickaxe at SliceMan. It missed by a wide margin and the others all stopped, turning as one to look at the fourth suddenly. It looked back and shrugged. There was a beat of silence, before the other three started calling out again and throwing their pickaxes too.

"Ah, looks like you've met some friends," said Norton, as he craned over to the the sink to reach for a toothbrush.

As he had approached the rustling sound, SliceMan watched the Metools, who appeared to be... explorers? Judging from the attire, they looked rather hardy. Perhaps they had some long-standing history of exploration through toilets throughout the country, having ended up in this particularly arid one by sheer chance. They even chattered amongst themselves, and apparently deemed him to be a threat, throwing a pickaxe at him that went wide. But on the other hand, SliceMan's eyes began to glaze over, as his mind was filled with a torrent of ideas. Immediately coming to mind were some simple methods, such as steaming them through the helmet, or cutting them out and grilling them, or perhaps just serving them up raw.

"Hmm, doesn't sound like you're up to talk about it. Well, have fun with these, then," his operator said, as he sent up some battlechips, along with some toothpaste onto his brush.

Meanwhile, SliceMan mumbled under his breath, and received the chips. His hands retracted into the shakers, and tubes flew into the top half. Plumes of flame began to flow into the shaker, igniting the contents into a fiery lightshow. From his shoulders, two knives sprang forward towards the Metools, and SliceMan dashed forward to keep up with them. However, he wasn't about to catch them. Instead, he swung his fistless arms to match exactly with the knives' falling trajectory, propelling them forward with a burst of flame towards the Metools. The knives flew forward, tearing through anything in their path, and sliced into the ground, as if it was made of butter.

Shortly after, the ground began to melt into a red battleground as more of SliceMan's knives began to spring forward at the Metools in a relentless hail of projectile knives, though most of them were only dull knives that were meant to nick through skin slightly. Through the knife storm, SliceMan was dancing across the pool of lava. Lastly, there was one knife, amidst the barrage, that had a small surprise attached to it. Within its white handle, an explosive charge was attached, that would erupt backwards in a powerful collateral area.

The lure of potential culinary experimentation called to SliceMan as he began his assault of the exceptionally lost metools. For the most part, their enthusiasm seemed to fade when they saw him coming at them. Given his violent appearance, this was probably understandable. Before any of them could react, shaker-assisted fiery fury was raining down upon them; one met was incinerated with the cut off beginnings of a shocked 'Mee-!', and the one beside it attempted to attack the crazed chef with a shockwave, but was too off balance to make it connect. It, too, caught fire a moment afterwards.

These two victims weren't alone in the raising temperature, as the dry land beneath them went from baking hot, to boiling pain, molten rock replacing the hard earth. a bevy of smaller knives scratched the remaining two metools, but they were more concerned with their suddenly burning feet to notice. One reached behind itself and pulled out what looked like an over-sized safari net, flinging it in sliceMan's general direction, but the whirling dervish of bladed pain was having none of that, as it passed wide and landed in the lava, where it swiftly caught alight and burned up. The other threw his pickaxe, but this, too failed to connect as sliceMan dodged away, then came in again to deliver his coup de gras in the form of an exploding knife that lanced through the pair of explorers with an almost sickening finality.

As the razed remnants of all the Metools hit the lava, SliceMan got to work, and dashed all about the pool, gathering up the bits of helmeted mini-virus that he could find. Scarcely more than a few moments later, SliceMan was hunched over the pool, with a pile of yellow hardhats off to the side, and a long barbecue skewer held over the red-hot rocks. Lifting up the skewered meat on it, he inspected it briefly, before nodding to himself. The skewer disappeared in a beam of light as he stood back up with a little happy hum.

"Slice, I'm glad you enjoyed that cooking session, but I'm not really in the mood to wait for too long," said Norton.

SliceMan jumped slightly. "A-Ah, I'm sorry! Hold on, I think the program is somewhere around here," he said, wandering about before finding the main program, which seemed to have had a pickaxe stuck into it. SliceMan pulled it off, and its processes began to restart. "Um, i-it should be good now."

Norton tapped on the screen slightly, before it lit up, along with his face. "Great! Good work."

"I-I'll scout out the area to see if there are any others," said SliceMan, heading off in another direction again, though really, it was just a ploy to continue his own search. There was no way he wasn't going to pursue any more, now that he'd gotten this fired up.

[Battle 2 - Ready!]
[SliceMan.EXE: 100 HP]
SliceMan came upon a land of loose soil and rock. A skeletal virus in a chef's hat was cooking something upon a stove virus in a big pot, stirring the contents with a bone. Upon seeing the navi, the stove virus blew its top, causing the skeletal virus' dinner to be thrown to the ground, pot and all, ruined. Enraged, the skeletal virus threw down its chef's hat and turned to the navi who spooked the stove virus. It waved his bone stirrer in a threatening manner while the stove virus belched out some fire.

That was to the east of SliceMan's position. To the far west, two snake-worm-things popped up out of the dirt and looked around. They spotted the navi and thought that he would make a good meal. They dove back into the ground and began moving towards him.

A gleaming green light came from a glowing crystal stuck within a rock to the north-west.

"I-Is this network connected to the main network somehow...?" stuttered SliceMan, as he skulked around a rather large rock within the computer's internal netspace. Certainly, the area seemed too large for a simple smart toilet's netspace.

"Maybe some virus tore open a backdoor or something, beats me," grunted Norton as he did his business.

"O-Oh! That would make sense," said SliceMan, just as he happened upon the viral cooking duo. His eyes widened as the skeletal virus stirred the pot, filled with whatever was inside. "... Some kind of broth?" muttered SliceMan, hazarding a guess to himself from how the pot sounded, as well as the scents that were coming from the pot. He looked to the sides nervously, and shook his head in resolve. He would approach them to ask about whatever it was that was being cooked. There was no sense in trying to cook them anyway, dessicated skeletons and living stoves didn't seem particularly like they could make any kind of good broth.

Unfortunately, as soon as he revealed himself, the stove virus blew its top and sent the pot flying, along with its contents. As the pot's murky contents spilled out onto the arid soil, SliceMan dejectedly watched it seep into the ground, mostly ignoring the threatening poses. His face clouded over as life seemed to drain from his eyes. "Norton, I'm seeing a few more viruses," said SliceMan, as he readied his stance.

"Hm? Oh, fine, here's a couple of chips. Don't spend it all in one place," replied his operator, as his prosthetic arm brought up a floating screen, and a Battlechip was provided wirelessly to his Navi.

With the Shotgun chip loaded into SliceMan's systems, the salt shakers on his arms began to revolve and click. Raising his hand towards the skeleton-stove duo, the energy burst was brief enough, before SliceMan himself took off in order to avoid whatever retaliation would go his way. Knives began to launch from his shoulder blocks as he darted about, attempting to avoid any incoming attacks. However, as he moved, he noticed that a few more viruses were also heading his way: a couple of sandworm viruses. Almost immediately, his eyes lit up once again as he saw them for what they were: fresh stock!

A trio of knives shot up from his shoulders into the air, right between his fingers. The Navi caught them deftly as he swept the soil in front of him with the heel of his boot, igniting it with fire. The fire didn't last for too long, but the soil had already collapsed into the ground, melting into a lava-filled battlefield around him. If the worms had approached him in that unfortunate window of time, they would have felt a rather sudden cooking sensation.

Disappointed at the loss of potential culinary secrets, SliceMan was quick to set about eliminating the less interesting targets while he awaited the more... delectable ones. The Skarab wound up to throw a bone at him, but the navi was quicker on the draw, blasting it with his shakers and rendering the virus into a pile of bones. It looked down, but it wasn't defeated quite yet. The same couldn't be said for the stove virus, which had been lining up to unleash its own brand of cooking upon SliceMan; the salty assault tore the virus apart before it could open its grate again. The small assortment of flying cutlery thus, couldn't seem to affect the the collapsed scarab and had little else to zero in on, though SliceMan was keeping nimble regardless. The snakes rushed in, swimming through the ground of the network with a fluid speed that might surprise even the quickest of navis; even as his knives flew at the more obvious foes, the two serpentine viruses had closed the distance.

They burst out of the ground behind him a moment later, diving at his back one after the other. Both were deadly accurate with their sneak attacks, and gave very little chance for him to avoid their strikes, but against all of the predictable odds, SliceMan caught wind of their antics just a moment ahead of time and moved with unexpected agility to avoid both of their lancing strikes in turn. The twin snakes circles under the soil to come back for another round, but SliceMan had a surprise for them, turning the ground all around to molten rock. There came two sounds of viral distress as the snakes were suddenly thrust up out of the lava, to the surface in the wake of the terrain changing, but though they writhed for a few moments, they looked to be quickly recovering. SliceMan would need to be quick if he wanted to capitalise on their exposed state, before they dove under again.

"So lively! So perfect!" exclaimed SliceMan as he watched the sandy snakes flail about in his giant makeshift desert grill. The heat bearing down on them from the unforgiving desert sun, combined with the completely natural, definitely not artificial heat of the earth, caused SliceMan to shiver with delight. While the net didn't exactly have a good equivalent of eels, the snakes were close enough in structure and taste that they were prepared in much the same way. In the heat of battle, though, he couldn't exactly afford to slice them apart that carefully, and would have to act quick to incapacitate them. Perhaps it was a compromise in taste, but he couldn't spare the time. "Norton! FireSword, please!"

Norton jumped slightly on his seat. His eyes lingered slightly. "... Ah. Um, I forgot to tell you about that. See, I kinda forgot the chip folder I bought for you back in the hotel."

"... W-What?"

"N-Now hold on, come on, I'll buy you some to replace those. Just make do with the ones we have for now," said Norton, as he sent what little left he had to his Navi.

With the first chip, his hands retracted into his arms once again as they filled themselves with flames. SliceMan looked down at his armaments rather dejectedly, before focusing on the wriggling snakes in front of him. That's right, there were ingredients to prepare! Pointing his right arm forward, he launched a ball of fire at one of the snakes, which then morphed its shape into a fist. His original right hand returned just as a salvo of knives were fired from his knife launchers, and he sprung into action. Leaping forward, he caught three of the knives in his right hand, which then somehow merged into them to create a fearsome set of claws. The rest of the knives flew towards the one he had been attacking, which would then neatly skewer it into prime grilling position.

Then, with a landing roll on his forward leap, he then pivoted towards the the other snake, and launched another fireball from his other arm. Everything fell neatly into place as SliceMan then raised his clawed hand, and swung it in a wide sweeping arc, aiming to smack it sideways across to its partner. With luck, they would both be skewered into each other, creating a beautiful double set of grilled snakes, ready to cook over his grilling tray of molten rock.

Not willing to let the opportunity go to waste, SliceMan made the best he could with inferior tools and socked the first snake a solid blow before it could duck back into the lava. Strangely, once it did, it appeared as though the lave itself wasn't really harming the virus at all. the volley of knives that followed from SliceMan splashed into the molten rock but didn't manage to strike as the snake moved swiftly under and away.

The other had also disappeared beneath the lava, and for a moment he was left knowing that the two viruses were circling somewhere below him, without really knowing where. This lasted until, in a sudden lunge, the two snakes leapt upwards towards his back from behind. SliceMan managed to dodge away from one at the last moment, but the other clipped him as it passed. His attempt to control the situation went further awry as the second snake deftly avoided the fireball meant for it.

It peeked up again from the surface of the lava, but trying to taunt the master chef proved to be a mistake when his skewering knives darted out to grab it. the snake hissed and flailed, to no avail, as he yanked it from the lava and deftly flung the serpent at its partner in crime. The impact proved to be too much for the first snake. It had also popped up for a moment to get its bearings, and was met with the flying body of its fellow virus, tangling the two together in a heap. At the end of this, however, only one of the two snakes was still moving. Just beyond the edge of the lava, the Skarab was reassembling itself, and would probably be quite surprised by the change in situation since it collapsed.

"Ah! I-It hurts..." said SliceMan, as he felt his cleaver body being slightly dislodged by the snake's body slam that had hit him earlier. Surveying his ingredients, it seemed like one of them had been deleted from being slammed into the other earlier. The last one was still standing, but it was weaker, and would be prime for a well-placed cut across its neck. Then, after that, he could get around to properly gutting and slicing it up. Maybe he would be able to properly prepare them after all! The thought made him shiver, but another movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. It seemed like the cooking skeleton virus from earlier had gotten back up; he'd have to deal with that as well.

"Norton, do we have any more chips? I just have one more item to prepare and I'll be returning."

The old man grunted. "Mm, just one. Enough?" he said, as his finger tapped on the screen.

"Hopefully," the Navi said, figuratively licking his chops as his knife-claws were readied. A quick slice to the back of the head should be sufficient, he thought, as he moved in for the final strike. Having observed the snake's movements earlier, he realized that they were likely to aim for his back. Thus, he intentionally left his flank open in order to lure the slithering snake in, before twirling rapidly with precisely-aimed cuts. The molten rock beneath his feet glowed in time with his dance, raising little flecks of superheated dust. Finally, he turned his attention to his final target, leveling his arm towards the Skarab virus. It clicked and rotated, retracting his hand into the arm. Near-simultaneously, SliceMan then fired a powerful energy cannon shot at the skeleton, along with a trio of knives from his shoulder-mounted storage.

The benefit of live ingredients was that you literally could not get fresher source for your cooking. The trouble with live ingredients, was that annoying propensity they had to fight back while you were trying to prepare them. So it was with SliceMan as his first effort to begin cleaning the remaining snake was confounded by its rapid movements. His second slice landed more solidly, and the snake was sliced open before it could duck away from the blow.

While SliceMan was dealing with this irksome piece of produce, the reformed skeleton hurled a bone in his direction, with the chef of the hour nimbly dodged. The bone kept spinning, however, and began to curve in the air without fading away. Despite this, he responded with a long range shot that rocked its bones again, sending the virus collapsing back into a disassembled pile. Annoyingly, though, still alive. His knives bounced and plinked off the collapsed bone,s but sadly didn't seem to have any further effect while it was in its disassembled state.

SnakeArm viruses are among the fastest moving viruses in MMBN, and thus have 2 free Movements each turn. They move by burrowing underground at high speed, and only occasionally pop out of the ground to get their bearings. They just about treat the ground as if it were water, and are normally only hittable by most forms of attack when they are above ground. They are able to move through any kind of terrain with the exception of Cracked, Broken, Missing, Glass, and Metal. They are not subject to the adverse effects of the terrain they are moving through, with the sole exception of Poison. As is normal, Snakearms are subject to damage by Ground attacks, terrain changes, etc while they are burrowed. SnakeArm can attack airborne targets, and their attack can pass over the terrain types they normally cannot burrow or swim through.

"Tsk, a little off-center," muttered SliceMan in a low voice, as he saw the second snake fall to his attack. As the meat dropped onto the lava and began to sizzle, he was about to approach it, when he saw that the Skarab virus's signature hadn't quite yet disappeared. Annoyingly, the bone it had thrown earlier didn't have the dignity to bow out, and was coming back for him. He looked down at his clawed hand, and at the spinning bone. An idea sprung into his head. The Skarab would reform shortly, as he had seen prior, so all he needed to do was attack it as soon as it came out of its collapsed state. Of course, that wouldn't be quite as fun, and as a Chef, he felt he had an obligation towards pleasing the customers. Though there weren't any here at the moment, it would be some interesting practice.

Focusing intently on the spinning bone, SliceMan lowered his stance to ready himself to dash to the side as soon as it came, and grab the bone in his hand. If all went well, he would obtain a lovely souvenir for himself, or just a simple flourishing finisher.

To his credit, SliceMan did manage to grab the bone out of the air before it could strike him. Unfortunately, he also made a bit too much of his namesake, between a combination of zeal and the sharp blades of his claws; the bone was cut into several pieces in his grip. There was a moment or two for him to process this disappointment, before the bone-flinger managed to reassemble itself, just in time to be dealt with.

SliceMan looked at the broken pieces of bone that were scattering around him, dropping into the lava under his feet. The pieces sizzled on contact with the molten rock, as did the slices of snake meat that were off to the side. While the Skarab virus reassembled itself, SliceMan stomped his feet angrily. "Arrrrgh! I can't make anything with this! Crumbling bone with absolutely nothing in it!" he loudly complained. He then focused his attention onto the upturned pot to the side with despair in his eyes, before he realized something. The pot hadn't entirely emptied its contents.

"Oh!" he exclaimed. With a sparkle back in his eyes, he then turned to the pile of bones right next to it. "I'll be taking that pot!" he said, as he dashed in to sweep it up with his unclawed hand, and planted his foot on solid soil. With a flair in his step, he violently spun twice to obliterate the skeleton's last remains, so that he could be done with its meddling and examine his spoils.

This time things went a little better, and SliceMan managed to rescue the pot and the remains of the broth that had been bubbling away inside - there might be enough left there to work with, perhaps. He was also able to finally dispatch the Skarab before it could attack him again, leaving him with a clear battlefield and some peace and quiet. the question was, what did he want to do with it, now that he had a breather? The data in the nearby rock chunk glowed enticingly, but those snake fillets also begged for attention.

As the claws disappeared from his hand, SliceMan stood back up, and stared at the pot in his other hand. In the heat of the moment he had grabbed it without much thought, but now that he looked at it, there was actually a fairly reasonable amount of broth still left in the pan. Unfortunately, because of its unknown property, he had no way of identifying what it actually was in terms of usability, and he couldn't exactly taste the broth with his lack of oral cavity. Looking at the browning snake meat spread out over the lava pan that he had constructed, he shrugged, and scooped up the meat in his hands. The meat sizzled as it was lifted off of the molten rock, somehow not being completely turned into charcoal at this point. It was actually looking rather well cooked.

Kicking away some of the bone shards scattered about his feet, he walked over with a low hum towards the black pot, and spread out the meat to season with some of his own salt and pepper. A knife flew out of his shoulder, deftly caught between his fingers, and he expertly used it to carve up one of the fillets into smaller pieces, enough to fill the pot and its unidentified broth. He waved his hand over the other three cuts of meat, and they vanished before him, transferred into the PET for later experimentation. He then lifted up the pot, swishing its contents around slightly, and placed it gingerly onto the flaming terrain he had made. The pot's contents began to waft up with its scents, and SliceMan stood and waited, satisfied.

A voice piped up from a video link, which opened up just then next to SliceMan's face. "Good job dealing with those viruses, SliceMan. I think you're done in there--" he started, before he saw the bubbling pot. "Never mind. Come back to the PET when you're done with that."

"Thanks, Norton, I'll do so," said SliceMan happily as the video link was cut. The Navi looked up from the pot and surveyed the area for a bit. It did look like he was safe for the moment, so he could wait for a bit. His eye caught a glimpse of a green shine behind some rocks, and his eyes widened slightly. Looking back down at the pot, he figured it wouldn't take too long for him to just check out the data crystal, and walked over to it. As it rotated in midair before him, he touched its gleaming surface, and the crystal began to decrypt itself.

And it decrypted...and decrypted...and decrypted...wait, why wasn't it turning into anything? Was it...a Mim-oh wait, there it was.

"Oh! This is nice," said SliceMan, as he transferred the cache of zenny towards the PET and walked back to the bubbling pot. It seemed to be cooking nicely, though SliceMan himself had no real way of finding out. Sighing, he wondered if it would be a good idea to ask Norton for an assistant taster after he'd opened up his restaurant and proven his worth a bit more. Taking the knife he had ejected out earlier, he began to stir with excitement, wondering what kind of stew the mystery broth would result in.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the zenny transfer ended with a brief ping on Norton's arm, as he was finishing up on brushing his teeth. The man glanced at the display on his arm and raised an eyebrow.

"Hm? What's this extra nineteen hundred, Slice?"

"Oh, um, I found it in a data crystal, Norton. Hope you don't mind."

"Hahaha! Well, it's not every day that you find a twenty lying around like that." said Norton, tapping the screen to put away the notification. "Are you done yet? Jeez, just transfer it up to the PET already, you don't have an automated cooking station there for nothing. And where did you get that ugly-looking pot? It looks like it was made out of backed-up camel shit."

"Y-Y-Yes sir," said SliceMan, sadly tapping on the pot and causing it to disappear in a flash of light. Perhaps he would check it out later. He readied himself to transfer back to the PET, when Norton interrupted him. "... Hey, Slice, did you get any good ingredients?"

SliceMan's eyes immediately lit back up. "Yes! Those Metools were fantastic! I never knew that such a variant existed! And the snake viruses would be prime material! Such wonderful ingredients in such an unexpected place! Thank you very much!"

Norton recoiled slightly at the over-enthusiastic reply, and grinned half-heartedly. "Well, I mean, that's good that you're so enthusiastic. If you want to search for more ingredients while I get ready to go, I can--"

"Yes! Right away! I would be thrilled! Please allow me to do so!"

"R-Right... Well, I'm pulling you out of this shitbowl. How does Dentech University's network sound? I hear they've got some interesting life there."

"That sounds good. Please do so," said SliceMan, as he excitedly initiated the jackout sequence himself, and disappeared in a beam of light.

In the midst of the arid sand dunes, a small transfer pad was nearly swallowed up by the gritty sands. However, it lit up briefly with a flash of light, before the silhouette of a tall, imposing Navi stepped through. SliceMan appeared through the pad, and sighed as he looked around. The area reminded him of the ToiletComp he had just been in, though thankfully now he wouldn't have to deal with the mental image of being stuck operated by a pantless Norton. Unlike the small device from before, SliceMan could clearly see a main road that led out towards much of the network's main facilities, among them being his destination. Without further words, he forged onwards through the desert network, looking out for any viral ambushes that the area might have for him.
