Desert Deuce

Finding his way through the twisty, turning network that was Netfrica, vines hanging overhead and sand everywhere across his path, he managed to come across a small clearing full of viruses, two Swordies with flaming blades hacking across the grass as they wondered their way around aimlessly, a Viney shuddering and shaking as the two swordies nearly cut it in twain, a giant shaking weight slowly sliding across the way and then a Totem virus, what he was looking for in the first place. Unfortunately, as he took a step on a normal panel, the viruses all swiveled across the field to face the chef's navi and as that happened, battle routines immediately set in for the navi. And then, across the way, behind the gaggle of viruses, a spinning green data cube that he could see glinting in the sunlight, rotating wordlessly.

VineyViney (Viney)

Viney viruses do not move or dodge. Viney viruses require the presence of Grass, Soil, or Mud terrain in order to appear in battle, and they always appear on these terrain types. Vineys are rooted in place, and cannot be moved. The main body of a Viney is immune to any and all forms of attack except fire element damage, but the vines the viruses uses to attack with are vulnerable to all attacks. The virus attacks by using a group of thorny vines to creep up out of a nearby panel, then move towards the victim in hopes of capturing them. Once the vines make contact, they wrap around the victim, and hold them in place while causing damage. The vines can only be escaped from by the target if the target dedicates an action with decent roleplay attempting to escape. The vines may also be cut or burned in order to allow the target to escape, but in the case of fire, the target sustains double the fire damage of the attack used to burn the vines. Summoning the group of vines requires an action, moving the vines requires an action, and damage is dealt to a captured target for each action the Viney spends trying to hold the target in place. Both the vines and the virus itself are damage zones. Any damage either one sustains counts against the virus' HP. Both are subject to terrain effects and those effects stack as if the virus were in two places at the same time (because it basically is).

Attack Description: Seeks and wraps enemies by sticking writhing vines through the ground.

Possible Rewards (Per Virus): Rope1, Zenny
Special: Bind: This is a virus-only form of instantly-activating Hold that does not count as a status effect (thus cannot be removed with status cure). Bind works on a per-action basis, instead of per-turn, and is maintained by physical contact with the source. A target suffering the effects of Bind also becomes weak to Fire. Bind is canceled by attacking the source with Fire or Slashing damage, or spending one or more actions to escape with good RP quality. Using Fire to remove the Bind source also damages the trapped victim.
Special: Immobile.

HeavyHeavy (Heavy)

Heavy viruses move slowly, and only dodge when they attack. When a Heavy attacks, it teleports to a position to the left or right of the intended target, and proceeds to try to ram the target with a quick sideways motion. The number of times it will consecutively attempt to ram the target before teleporting back to its starting position depends entirely on the number of actions the virus has. Teleporting before and after the attack do not require an action. Movement and attacking are one and the same to this virus, thus even a non-attack collision with it is damaging.

Totems always begin in attack mode. They switch modes (spin around) when they take damage. Mode switching is automatic, and doesn't require an action. When hit with a Multi-Hit attack, the Totems will switch modes for however many times they are hit. An even number of hits will result in no change, and an odd number of hits will leave the Totems on the opposite mode. Multi-Hit attacks happen quickly enough that the Totems will not take an action in between the multiple mode changes.

-- Battle 1 Ready? Start!! --
"Uuuuh... These vines are really getting in my way," muttered SliceMan as he went through the sandy Netfrican network, cutting down the vines where they impeded his path. He wondered if he was to find any viruses in the first place. It seemed like the bounty hunt wasn't needed much at this rate, he thought. Fortunately, however, he came across some adversaries relatively quickly. The spread of viruses didn't quite inspire much enthusiasm in him, however, as none of the viruses seemed particularly edible. The only exception was the Viney, and he'd had enough of vines for the moment.

"Um... Do we have any area-clear chips, Norton? I'd really like to just get this over with..."
"Mm."

With Norton's vague-sounding grunt, SliceMan felt a couple of chips manifest themselves inside of his processes. The first chip activated itself, materializing as a yellowed iron kettle in his hands. SliceMan's eyes narrowed in confusion. "... Um, what..." Unaware on how to use the odd new weapon, he muttered to himself, turning the kettle around to inspect it further. When he turned it about, the LittleBoiler's shark-toothed face presented itself. "W-Whaaa!" he yelled in shock, reflexively tossing his arms up, and sending the Boiler flying towards the horde of viruses. The kettle's ascent was accompanied by a host of knives shot into the air with it, which would most certainly leave it with a few more holes than what it originally had.

"O-Oh, no!" blurted out SliceMan. Attempting to fix the problem next, he pulled out a pair of knives and held them at the ready while he activated the second chip. Summoned in its natural habitat, the Sandworm emerged from the sands. Unfortunately for SliceMan, it had not much interest in the kettle that he had thrown out accidentally, and started wreaking havoc on the enemy lines instead. The steam emitting from the kettle started to become quite deafening as the Navi slowly backed away, hopefully just escaping the ensuing steam explosion.

In his sudden panic at being given what looked like a live virus, SliceMan's initial throw of the kettle fell rather abysmally short, and worrisomely close to him still as it began to whistle and percolate with the rupturing effect of his reactionary knives. Worse luck, he was so distracted by this that the Heavy's sudden warp to the side and following swipe completely blind-sided the chef navi.

He prepared his own defensive stance quickly, but seeing raised blades seemed to really tickle the two Swordy viruses who, with a brief helmeted nod to each other, both warped forward to engage him at once. The first came in with a long piercing stab, leaving some distance between itself and SliceMan; the less common position was enough to let it come very close to slipping its blade past his guards; SliceMan took a tiny scratch, nothing more. the second appeared a moment after, directly in front of its counterpart and much closer, swinging its sword with a broad sweep, but SliceMan was able to fend this one off much more handily.

Wile he was engaged with these foes, his helpful sandworm sprung a surprise attack from behind, diving from the back in a line that aimed to punch through both the sought-after Totem, and the Viney as well. The first was a clean strike, and it easily destroyed the targeted virus. the second, however, proved harder to hit, and the snake plunged back into the ground without quite connecting.

As SliceMan began to back off from the violently boiling kettle, The Viney behind it shuddered again and a series of whippish vines burst up from the ground beneath him, binding tightly and restricting his movement. It didn't last too long, however, as the boosted boiler blew a second later, covering the nearby area in a furious blast of steam and boiling water. SliceMan himself shrugged it off, and the vines encasing him quickly fell away, allowing him to back off further. When the steam cleared, however, he found himself alone on the battlefield. He may have been a touch closer to the kettle than he'd have liked, but it was good fortune in the end; several of the viruses clustered around him were also far too close and the result was a swift victory. And also a lot more mud than had been here previously. Oh well.

On the bright side, he now had some more spoils to collect up, including what looked like some easily convertible chip data from the Totem virus. there was also the question of the green crystal, just a little way off, which was now his to deal with at leisure.

"Ow ow ow, that was super hot..." said SliceMan as he lowered his knives, and looked around. There wasn't much to harvest, again, in terms of ingredients, except for the vines, and he'd already gotten plenty of that. One of the Totem heads remained from the battle, and SliceMan looked rather incredulously at its ridiculous expression as he picked it up. "Eh..." he muttered, deciding on whether he wanted to bring it along or otherwise, when a green glint in the back caught his eye. Seeing its gleam as a source of interest, he wandered over to it to confirm it as a green Mystery Data crystal, which began to decrypt as he approached...

While the battlefield proved less than inspiring, fortune was with the culinary searcher: Decrypting the Mystery Data ended up providing a chip, and, on what might be considered prosaically slim odds, it looked like one he might appreciate.

"Oh! This looks much more promising!" said SliceMan, as he hoisted up the red apple to examine it. Certainly, it seemed like a very high quality fruit, packed with restorative energy. A cornerstone of any budding battler's diet, no doubt. Easily convertible to battlechip data too, it seemed, as he watched it disappear into the air, and reappear in the corner of his eye as a tiny "Chip Received" notification. Norton didn't seem to have acknowledged it much, however, though he did remember hearing that the man was busy.

"Well, I can't very well cook with just an apple, let's see what else we can find!" he said, enthusiastically setting out once more, revitalized in his motivation.

Sliceman, continuing on through the jungle-like area, would very soon come across a clearing, three large trees of about six feet worth of thickness and two feet around, he would come across a Whomper jumping off a tree to the most northern part of the area, caught mid-fall as a Spidy would skitter about behind a second several feet closer to Sliceman and then a Totem to the left of a final tree on the edge of the soil area. But before the walking sword could make a move, the Totem virus breathed out a large spray of fire, Sliceman barely avoiding it before an Oldstove, Volcano and Elemperor popped out of the sand, shaking it off and getting to their places, before a spinning green treasure chest in the form of a Mystery data would rise to the surface of the sand, Oldstove and Volcano flanking Slice from either side.

Elemperor viruses are Planeswalker viruses: their attacks and abilities all depend on the terrain they stand upon. All Elemperor are immune to any adverse terrain effects... except damage multiplication, of course. They attack every action they are able to.

SpidySpidy (Spider)

Spider viruses attack by setting webs on panels, objects, and other handy surfaces. The webs may even be strung between surfaces, such as blocking doorways. Anything that touches the webs triggers them detaching from whatever surface they were attached to and wrapping around the target. The webs cause a slow effect, as well as dealing damage for every action the target uses to dodge the following turn unless the webs are burned off, cut off, or removed by some other means. Status cure will not remove the webs, or the slow effect they generate. Spiders do not attack directly, and they may lay one panel's worth of webbing each turn for every action they possess. They may lay webs while moving. Spiders are immune to the effects of ANY WhiteWeb attacks, be they generated by Spider viruses or from battlechips. Webbing causes the target to become weak to fire, thus the next fire attack will deal double damage if the webs have not been removed first.

This type of virus cannot attack while moving, and moving requires an action. Attack power doubles on Coal and Lava.

"W-Whoa! I-I'm not the one that needs to be roasted!" yelled SliceMan, as he barely avoided a gout of fire from the nearby Totem virus. Seeing the viruses swoop up from the sands one by one, SliceMan's expression changed slightly. "Hm, at least it seems a little more promising," muttered SliceMan, as he surveyed the surrounding area to evaluate his potential catch. A skittering spider sweeping about on the sands, and a rounded-looking fellow wielding a wrecking ball. While he could easily imagine the former in a dish, the latter slightly intrigued him. Of course, there was the problem of first getting it down from the tree it was currently situated in. No real problem there, though. "Time to get to work."

Two knives erupted upwards into the air and were deftly caught in SliceMan's hands as he entered a deeply concentrated state. Any sound or movement that entered his immediate presence turned into a sharp prickle against him, causing his hands to immediately intercept the source of the disturbance with a rapid knife whip. Meanwhile, elsewhere on the field, a rumbling underneath the savannah's soil revealed a pair of sinkholes, from which two strange objects emerged. One appeared to be a carbon copy of the Totem virus, aimed at one of the trees which the Whomper was in, and another was... a gleaming red apple? The Totem facsimile belched out a stream of fire towards the tree, while the apple... continued to show no sign of being anything but an apple.

Back to SliceMan's side, a sudden burst of noise erupted from his shoulders as a salvo of knife missiles were fired, launching themselves directly towards the apple that had been summoned just earlier. SliceMan himself was still unmoving, save for his defensive stance. A brief glint shone off of his eye as his environment transformed itself. The soil beneath him rapidly increased in temperature, to the point where the dirt clumps started to melt into each other, quickly turning the ground about him into a gleaming red. The newly created lava puddle then inexplicably erupted out from his position in a forceful wave, consuming anything in its path as it quickly covered the entire area in searing hot temperatures.

Having shown up and arrayed themselves against the culinary navi, some of the viruses suddenly realised that they were particularly out of their normal comfort zones. this caused the Vlcano to forgo attacking for the time being, while it desperately created a small patch of lava beneath itself in order to call home; it just couldn't bear to go on if there wasn't at least some lava nearby after all.

The presence of the new lava puddle also seemed to calm the Elemperor somewhat, as it had also been expecting there to be some around somewhere, and it began making its way over to the panel to confirm it. As it went, however, it turned briefly to spout a great arc of sand towards SliceMan, dumping it all over him in comical fashion. Fortunately, Slice himself was able to shrug off the torrent with minimal discomfort and prepare himself for dealing with the true threats.

The Spidey was not really one of those. It skittered past him and laid a track of sticky white webs behind it, but it wasn't precise enough to actually coat the navi himself with its binding,s and the webs remained stretched on the ground, ready to spring free and ensnare anyone who stepped on them. This continued display of poor competency was continued as SliceMan's own totem exhaled a blast of fire, but managed only to catch the tree, which could not dodge, while the Whomper smoothly repositioned itself out of the way and prepared a counter attack of its own. It, too, failed to meet expectations, however, as the cone of fire and magma it blew out once it dropped missed SliceMan completely... though it did clip his totem for some minor damage, and flipped it over into its healing mode.

SliceMan had a snack mid-fight, topping off his health with a tasty apple. At least nothing went wrong here. The real totem tried to interrupt his treat and steal it for itself, but was both too slow, and too inaccurate to do anything more than blow more ineffective fire here and there. After his meal was finished, Slice was done playing and with a quick change spread a broad pool of lava under himself and most of his foes, then unleashed it in a violent wave of magma that thoroughly obliterated most of the things that weren't SliceMan himself. The only survivors of this magma-masacre were the Volcano, around who the wave had managed to pass without harm, and also the Elemperor, though exactly how the wave had missed it was a difficult question to ponder.

WhomperWhomper (Whomper)

Whomper viruses drop down from way up high, execute a breath attack, and rise back up. Dropping and attacking is an action, while moving back upward is a second action. They may also adjust where on the battlefield they drop next while in High Altitude as a free action. These are the only actions this virus family performs.

Attack Accuracy: C
Attack Description: Uses a scorching hot breath weapon to slag the enemy and the ground.

ElemperorElemperor (Elmperor)

Elemperor viruses are Planeswalker viruses: their attacks and abilities all depend on the terrain they stand upon. Pay attention to the special sections of their stat sheets, as those will tell you what types of terrain must be present for an Elemperor to appear (this terrain requirement naturally overrides the Network's terrain selection).

VolcanoVolcano (Volcano)

Volcano viruses only appear if there is Lava Terrain present on the field, and only 1 Volcano virus may appear per panel of Lava Terrain (usually 5%). Volcano viruses move and dodge at average speed. Volcano viruses have the ability to fully heal themselves no matter how much damage they have taken if they move to Lava Terrain, and spend an action on it for this purpose. This type of virus cannot attack while moving, and moving requires an action. Attack power doubles on Coal and Lava.

TotemTotem (Totem)

Totems always begin in attack mode. They switch modes (spin around) when they take damage. Mode switching is automatic, and doesn't require an action. When hit with a Multi-Hit attack, the Totems will switch modes for however many times they are hit. An even number of hits will result in no change, and an odd number of hits will leave the Totems on the opposite mode. Multi-Hit attacks happen quickly enough that the Totems will not take an action in between the multiple mode changes.

With the blazing lava flood coming to a close, SliceMan lowered his knives from his defensive stance, narrowing his eyes as he found that two viruses had survived the purge. His hands glowed a dim red as the knives he had been holding began to heat up rapidly. Then, leaping backwards in one quick movement, he tossed out both of the knives in quick succession at the remaining lamp and volcano virus. Immediately afterwards, just as he was making his landing, the lava began to rumble. Suddenly, the lava split open, and a worm-like creature leapt forth from the depths, ready to devour either of the remaining morsels that remained.

Most of the threats and potential food sources were dealt with no, and it only took SliceMan a few quick moves to complete the clean-up. Each of his blazing knives made good on their separate targets, and the volcano wasn't able to retaliate with any kind of accuracy. The lamp virus managed a quick shot at him, which SliceMan couldn't get out of the way of — rather than sand, this time, the lamp spewed molten rock, and the chef's best efforts at avoidance came to naught, however, a moment later his slightly more sneaky ally erupted up and speared through both of the remaining targets, skewering the pair and putting an end to their resistance.

Variously roasted bits and pieces of the viruses remained, bobbing about in the pool of lava he had created, but in amongst them, and the odd scattering of viable zenny that he found, ZliceMan would also retrieve a piece of chip data that held the same adaptive elemental properties the lamp had shown earlier.
