Friday night stroll

Eyeing the scene and contemplating his arsenal, HangMan began the battle subtly, carefully lining up a trip laser between himself and the two Blazers. While he was doing this, the brush virus, perched on the refinery structure, made a small dabbing motion and the panel that the Volgear seemed installed to glowed more brightly, beginning to shine with a protective aura. The Volgear, in turn seemed to inhale, then exhale, as much as such a virus could, before a group of fire columns erupted from the poison around the Cragger viruses. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to actually connect with them.

As Hangman began to move away from his explosive, the two Blazers rushed him. They were slightly staggered, but he had managed to set his explosive blast up well enough that they both crossed the line in pursuit of him more or less at the same time. This meant, conveniently, they both exploded into chunks at more or less the same time as well.

A puff on his drug of choice later, and HangMan faded from sight in a cloud of smoke, observing as the two Craggers raised their fists, making efforts to smash the structure in front of them to pieces. One wasn't quite well-placed enough to hit what it was aiming for, but the other crashed a powerful stone fist down and ruptured the refinery, destroying a majority half of it in one traumatic blow. The pair had noted HangMan, he knew, but it didn't seem like it would take them very long to break the more smashable things, and then come for him.

Blazers are a modified strain of Fishy virus made to fully exploit their previous possession of Burner battlechip data. While they retain, for the most part, the appearance of a Fishy virus, their fins are more heavily rounded and there are a set of specialized gills on either side of their underbelly that can spew flames. In addition, all Blazers are now a stark reddish color, with the intensity varying from a charcoal-ish gray-red at the first tier to a violent intensity with the Omegas.

Craggers are pretty easy targets, given their size. They also move very rarely, and when they do they move slowly. Their dodge rate is abysmal. They generally rely on their HardBody defense, which reduces non-break damage by half, but doubles break damage. They have high attack power and AoE, but their accuracy is generally bad as their attacks are easy to follow and take time to deliver. Their attack is executed as a Drop Attack, and thus attacks from above, and not head-on. Targets caught underground within this attack's AoE range take an additional 50 Null damage that ignores all defenses.

He initially planned to work his way towards the refinery, killing off the Craggers first, but their assault on the refinery caused the invisible Navi to change his mind. To keep himself from being detected for now, HangMan sent a message directly to Holly.

Since the Volgear and Craggers seemed to be focused on eachother, he decided to let the stony viruses do all the heavy lifting; he'll deal with them later.

The first chip came in soon enough, which he activated immediately. If he weren't invisible, one could see his right forearm and hand had transformed into a CannonDumb-style gun, with a cylindrical targeting laser mounted near the barrel. Picking out the Volgear was easy enough, it's not like it was going anywhere, so the weapon theoretically would've locked very easily and pointed its barrel directly towards the fire breather.

His trusty shotgun materialized in his left hand while he confirmed his aim, then fired. The cannon went off with a loud boom, but with nary a flicker of muzzle flash nor wisp of smoke before it started to fragment and disappear. HangMan lowered his right arm and raised his left, to point the shotgun up and towards the Brushman. He didn't have any fancy targeting hardware on this weapon, but the BrushMan wasn't doing much to keep itself from being in HangMan's crosshairs.

After "drawing a bead" on the BrushMan, he fired his shotgun and sent a spray of energy shot in the BrushMan's direction. He activated another Invis chip shortly afterwards, to keep himself out of sight for a while longer and to let the Craggers finish their work. He lowered his left arm and let the equally invisible shotgun fragment into nothing and continued to watch the violence unfold.

Right after he had disappeared from sight, HangMan tossed out another hit towards the Volgear, aiming to pick off the threats one by one. It took the hit, and was surprised as it looked around in abject confusion. Meanwhile, the Brushman danced about a bit more, and one of the Craggers was spared from the poison bog's corrosion as a shining panel appeared beneath it. Unfortunately, the golems didn't really seem so grateful, and lifted their arms once more, smashing the refinery into smithereens and landing its two occupants into the poison. The destruction of the refinery caused HangMan's second shot of a Shotgun shell to miss, unfortunately, but he managed to keep himself out of sight still.

"Tsk," HangMan remarked after his shotgun didn't hit its mark, but to his credit, his target was actively tumbling to the ground due to its perch's destruction. However, now everything was on ground level, which opened up a few more attack opportunities. He sent a message to Holly, while he was still under the veil of invisibility.

next.
After the first chip was uploaded, a trio of Molokos materialized seemingly out of nowhere. They briefly looked around to find their targets, then bleated out a battle cry and began to charge in a flurry of hoofs, fluff, and horns. One galloped directly towards the injured Volgear, then lept from the side of the shore like a down-covered missile in an attempt to collide with the virus horns-first. The second and third, who trailed slightly behind, adopted their comrade's tactics and hurled themselves from the shoreline in shallow arcs towards their targets, instead of trying to wade/swim through the river. One attempted to careen into the Cragger atop the holy terrain, while the other tried to run down the Brushman that created said terrain.

HangMan followed behind his first attack wave, but didn't follow the sheep to the point of jumping into the river. Instead, he stopped just short of the cracked panels that made up the shoreline. Knowing his invisibility was likely going to time out soon, he summoned his next loyal virus. This time, a dark gray, tombstone-like Dominerd rose from the ground in front of him. The virus's arms were crossed in front of its closed Maw and appeared to be laying dormant, but a mere tap from the enemy would be countered with a sudden, crushing bite.

Hidden under his smoky technique, HangMan summoned up a herd of Moloko that began to charge madly towards the viruses, with varying success. The Volgear, having lost its higher ground, was immediately trampled, and the nearby Brushman also suffered the same fate, albeit not quite enough to delete it entirely. Unfortunately, the third Moloko missed its target on the enormous Cragger by some streak of luck. The Brushman immediately set about protecting itself from the poison by converting it into a gleaming Holy panel, while the Craggers set their sights on the source of the Moloko rush--only to find that their target had moved in the confusion.

Their fists rose in response, and crashed into the Dominerd shield he had set up, piercing through the defense and dealing him a significant bit of damage. (-30) (-30) The Dominerd vanished into the ether, only to show up, half of its face completely shattered, and sank its teeth into one of the Cragger, leaving it teetering on the edge. With most of the combatants now at critical levels, it seems that it could be anyone's fight.

HangMan's normally toothy grin changed to an equally toothy grimace after he took the brunt of the Cragger's stony fists. They've outlived their use, and now have earned the Navi's ire. However, instead of throwing a fit of rage, HangMan took a long drag from his cigar, and held the smoke in his lungs for a second or so. He then exhaled while somehow directing the smoke downwards, which seemed impossible due to the fact his jaws were still tightly shut. Regardless, the smoke cascaded downwards like a slow-motion waterfall, and rolled over the floor as the very ground started to change beneath his feet.

Soon the field changed from a combination of caustic poison and divine protection to what looked like a windswept plain, with sickly tan and brown grass and weeds. Though it looked desolate and lifeless, HangMan felt oddly "at home" in his new surroundings; his grimace reverted back to a manic smile as he rocked his neck to the side with a few stiff *pop* sounds. "Nah let's try that new Break Knife, if you would be so kind," he requested of his NetOp before his eyes glared through his highly reflective sunglasses towards the BrushMan.

The noose around his right cuff loosened and extended to the floor, and HangMan set his sights on the thin BrushMan virus. He brought his right forearm horizontally against his chest, then swiped forward to whip the tarnished brass noose out on its rapidly extending lead in an attempt to lasso the virus or get a "ringer" as if he were playing a game of horseshoes. If the loop of his noose surrounded the virus, he pulled his arm straight back and quickly removed all the slack in his rope to cinch it down before several of its threads began to glow red and siphon energy from its victim.

A few moments later, a heavy, cleaver-like blade materialized in HangMan's left hand. Even if his noose was still vampirically feeding on his first target, he quickly moved in to attack the healthiest-looking Cragger; he'd effectively created a plain in the middle of a river, so it was only a matter of time until the poison seeped back in. He left a wispy trail of smoke from his cigar as he moved in, then delivered a simple, yet hopefully effective, vertical chop towards the rocky virus in an attempt to smash it to pieces.

After swinging at the first, his head snapped towards its more injured counterpart. He continued to brandish the heavy-looking cleaver, but he'd rather expertly flipped the handle in his fingers so the blade was pointing straight down in his hand. He tried to descend upon the virus like a murderer, leading with a vertical stab aimed towards the virus's boulder-like skull.

Changing the landscape to a rather dead-looking, but comparably more hospitable environment, HangMan was more in his element. Starting with a strike against the nearby Brushman, he eliminated it before it could revert his changes to the field, as well as restoring some of his vitality. (+15) (+5) He then summoned up a heavy-looking cleaver to strike against the Cragger viruses and defeat them handily. However, the weight of the cleaver threw his strikes off balance, as he was not quite used to the weapon yet. (+5) Luckily, it somewhat worked in his favor, as the first Cragger's downward smash missed him by a hair, though the team-up between the two Craggers caused him to be unable to evade the second hit. (-30) The ground underneath him cracked, but there was a silver lining--his proximity with the two golems caused the second strike to also damage the golem's ally for a not-insignificant amount of damage.

CraggerCragger (Cragger)

Craggers are pretty easy targets, given their size. They also move very rarely, and when they do they move slowly. Their dodge rate is abysmal. They generally rely on their HardBody defense, which reduces non-break damage by half, but doubles break damage. They have high attack power and AoE, but their accuracy is generally bad as their attacks are easy to follow and take time to deliver. Their attack is executed as a Drop Attack, and thus attacks from above, and not head-on. Targets caught underground within this attack's AoE range take an additional 50 Null damage that ignores all defenses.

"Hrm," the Navi grumbled as attacks went embarassingly off-target, while he himself was hit with a crushing response from one of the craggers. A quick glance down would've revealed he was no longer on solid footing, so he first prioritized getting himself out of a potentially bad spot. He tried to maneuver and slink around the closest cragger, and whatever stone fists thrown his direction, to the nearest patch of brownish grass while he called out to his NetOp. "I'll need thaht RageClaw1Damage: 40 + Slashing (Attack) OR 20 + Impacting (Throw)

next, please,"
he asked with a notable urgency in his voice.

After slipping away to hopefully more solid ground, HangMan made a point to wrap both hands around the heavy cleaver's handle, brandishing it like a broken long sword as he lined up his target. This time, he brought the cleaver up above his head with both hands, then tried his best to deliver a perfectly vertical downward swipe towards the Cragger. He aimed to cleave the virus in half, even if the weapon shattered in the process. In fact, he planned on it.

After his weapon eventually broke off in the Cragger's corpse or the ground below, he let go of the handle and splayed the fingers of his right hand outwards. That was the cue for the RageClaw1's activation, which caused his already spindly fingers to further elongate and stretch into a set of nightmarish-looking black claws. This weapon was much lighter and more familiar to the Navi, so he simple turned on his heel to face the more wounded Cragger and brought his clawed hand and arm back.

With the Cragger in his sights, HangMan took a step forward as he swung his arm in a diagonal diving slash in an attempt to rake his claws across the Cragger's hardened body. If he managed to hit, the shrieking scrapes of metal-on-rock and accompanying sparks would suggest the claw had an unsurprisingly difficult time digging into his target, but all he needed was just that little extra push to send the Cragger proverbially tumbling into oblivion.

Maneuvering around the Craggers was no small feat, as due to his proximity with them, he was pretty much trying to evade giant lumps of rock being hurled at him. His first attempt ended in abject failure, with the less injured of the Craggers taking a swing at him and crushing his side with the rocky attack. (-30) Getting onto the grass helped mitigate the damage (+5) as he brought down his cleaver onto the golem in retaliation, smashing it and his weapon into pieces at long last. The second Cragger smashed down on him just as he got in a tick of recovery from the grass (+5), which negated pretty much all of it (-30), though he was saved by a hair thanks to his Undershirt program kicking in and saving him from EJO. Clawed fingers raked through the heavily damaged golem, finally giving him reprieve from the tough fight at long last.

HangMan was left with more than just a bruised ego, but the battle was finally over. "Tch, nah that was just plain embarrassin'." HangMan muttered from behind his broken cigar, then started to gather up the rewards from the battle.

Back in the real world, Holly's icy gaze combed over the PET, not happy with the flashing "WARNING" screens that appeared due to HangMan's critical HP state. ["That was sloppy; replacement Navis aren't cheap, be more careful next time."] HangMan briefly paused as he was hunched over picking up a zenny data packet. "Of course, my mistake," he replied and got back to work. HangMan was obviously disappointed in how the battle turned out, but at least it sounded like he wasn't as disposable as he'd initially feared.

While the thought was mentally comforting, it didn't do much for his body. He picked up the last zenny packet, then looked towards Holly's POV. "If it's alright with you, I think this is quite enough foah tonight. It's gettin' late, so I can tie up some quick odds 'n ends in the NetSquare, with yoah permission of course." Holly looked at the PET's clock, she was a bit surprised her parents hadn't already called her down for dinner; they were probably still at work. [Ugh, I hate cold leftovers] she thought to herself before addressing her Navi. ["Fine, I'll send you in."]

A couple moments later, HangMan disappeared in an inky black streak that shot up into the air, almost like a spout of oil.
