Cuddles & Puddles

A large turquoise square blinked overtop the panelled floor of SciLab Net. It repeated three more blinks as Dignity's targeting system adjusted its position by centimeters, searching for optimal terrain to land the bronze colossus. So mighty was her filesize that loading Dignity.CMD took visible seconds to load from the feet up. Twenty-seven feet high her chassis rose, from her claw-like brazen hooves to the tip of her smokestack. She settled into stance, thrumming like an orchestra of brass.

Only when Dignity was settled did Phase's data settle into place. Phase's pilot armour was on in full this time, snug around her head and flappy around her ears like every pilot cap should be. "It has a hat!" was all Vincent and Yu heard before the PET radio dissolved into excited cackling. Vincent, for his part, just looked a little bemused, but happy enough to go along with it. It was not the expression one might expect to see on a man in a skintight jumpsuit, but the giant was doing a champion's job of holding a straight face.

Running the ignition sequence was getting faster and faster; twenty-five seconds of cranking levering cranking levering, and Dignity's engine was chugging merrily along, building and condensing steam in ways only the world's sore virtual steam physicist could imagine. Strapped into the cockpit and testing Dignity's hand controls, Phase shouted over the engine, "Which way are we going, Vincent?"

Vincent made to reply, looked back to Yu and his talking computer system, and laughed a little. "I, ah, don't really know? I think Yu's computer just scanned for somewhere good and out of the way and zapped you in, so I imagine you'll just pick a direction and start walking. Best wait for Critias, at any rate!" he suggested with a little shrug, regardless that Phase couldn't see it. A second passed, then a few more...and Phase called, "Right, right." Dignity's legs flexed their pistons up and down, clearly itching to really get moving.
Critias landed not too far away from the steampunk robot. The tall wyvern looked around, seemingly familiar with the environment. Once he had accustomed to the sight around him, the bat stretched around for a moment, pretty much giving away that Yusaku was controlling Critias movement.

"Alright. This is the area." They spoke in unison. Every second passing strengthened the link between navi and Operator. By now it was practically impossible to tell where Yusaku ended and Critias began.

"Looking at the virus report, the situation is nominal, with virus presence way under the safety level. Still, no one will mind if we go poking around a little yeah?"

One hop aided by a flap of his wings and the purple bat was back perched up on the Dignity's shoulder. He pointed the robot in their desired direction. "Over there PhaseVin! Try to keep up!"

He waited for the megazord to move before hopping off and zipping away at his own faster pace.

Outside in the ral world, the panel housing Vincent's location clicked and raised themselves up just a little to leave him a 1:1 view of his navi. He could see Yusaku down below scanning the area, while the entirety of the guy's laboratory faded, replaced by scilab net. Yusaku's suit was glowing slightly, indicating it was running and connecting operator and navi together.

*User:Vincent, would you like to activate your Full Body Feedback System and merge with your Navi?* Yusaku's Ai chimed.
"SciLabs has always been a bit strange. So I just flick this visor down and the dual-piloting restarts again, yeah? I'll do it in a sec," Vincent fiddled with the hinge of his helmet, leaning up against the console he was due to pilot. He was a little unpleasantly reminded of his college days when his outfit lit up, but did as the Ancient Netopians did and powered through with his story. "When I was an undergrad, I ran this week-long experiment using this region of SciLab Net. It was the weirdest place, it was like a virtual desert. Floor still worked, but that was about it. Not a scrap of data activity to be had; it made a great control setting. That's SciLab for you! Who knows what's happened here?"

From Phase's stirrup-seat at central stage, she could put Critias in her field of vision with a quick shoulder-check, seemingly reaching in towards the cockpit before his hand disappeared from the camera's view. "Alright, Vincent, I'm letting out the throttle," the pilot called, easing her butterfly grips forward. Dignity lurched into motion, pulling a shuffling pivot until she was level with Critias' pointed claw, and started a great wheeling gait forward. Seemingly in slow motion, her size was tremendous enough to put the mech's walk at a perfectly respectable runner's pace. At her tireless rate, it wouldn't be long at all before they happened across something.

As Critias and Phase moved out, there wasn't much of anyone around to notice the odd duo, at least at first. It did become readily apparent, however, that much of the net space in SciLab wasn't particularly designed with mobile two storey buildings in mind. For the most part they had to stick to the broadest thoroughfares, an occasionally find another way around where build alleyways were impossible to navigate, but the outing went mostly uneventfully all the same, at least for a little while.

After a short while, however, the pair trundled their way out into an open space beyond the edges of one high tech city block to find an open flat of metallic and electrical panels, threaded through by occasional light lines. Several sensitive pieces of equipment poked up here and there around the field, looking like monitoring devices of some description, though telling their exact purpose would likely be impossible.

On the far side of the open area, a trio of hovering cubes spun in the air once and began to blink red and blue as Critias and Phase arrived. On a second glance, only the ones on the outside were actually blinking; the middle one didn't even look like a proper cube, and it had just been painted blue and red, so that the colours seemed to alternate as it spun in place.

Clustered around a piece of equipment much closer, another trio of viruses turned to face the newcomers; these ones were rat-like, and they all began squeaking and... beeping... in erratic bursts. They could spy a small handful of other viruses scattered about the area as well; a cold-head virus swivelled, over on the right hand side of their view, while something that might have just been another piece of scanning equipment revealed itself to be a satellite as it activated. Directly in from to them, a Billy dropped out of the antenna of an upright extension and began clicking its prongs together at them in a way that seemed quite menacing.

Vincent hummed to himself as they proceeded, ever the thoughtful scientist. He grinned and nudged Yu as Dignity nearly got herself stuck in an alley. "Relatable," he quipped, before his PET began pinging alerts one after another. "Well well, what's all this then? See something, Phase?"

Screens were flashing in Dignity's cockpit, Phase speed-reading each in turn with rapid jerks of her head. "Viruses - a lot of viruses," she murmured, voice a little quavery despite the several tons of brass and steel cocooning her. "But where...ah, Vincent, look! The floor!" From her perspective, the ground almost seemed to come alive, little shadows crawling out of the metalworks like insects from a nest. Critias, at least, was easily-recognised, a bright ripple of deep violet amongst grey and fluorescence. One virus in particular was painting the screen around it with warnings; Phase squinted at it. "It's saying this one is...Elec? Vincent, I don't know what any of this means!" she complained, throwing her hands up.

Vincent hissed air between his teeth. "That's not good, that means Dignity's at a disadvantage," he murmured, thumbing through his Battlechips while he could still see them. A hole in the logistics became apparent to him. "Yu," he called over, "if I'm to drive Dignity, how am I supposed to slot in Battlechips when I've got the visor on? I can't see what I'm doing!"

"Vincent! We need to do something now! Just give me something and walk me through it!" Phase shouted through the speaker.

Desire to pilot the mecha warred with trust in his most loyal assistant, with Worry For Phase jumping the ropes and mucking everything up. Ultimately, he left his visor up, and slotted in the strongest single attack they had available. "Okay, Phase, this one is called SonicWave," Vincent held the PET right up to his mouth like a radio, squinting into a tiny holoscreen as he did. "That one sending the alerts off, that's going to be your primary target. But before you do anything, okay, you're gonna want to let out that clutch built into your seat there. Should be just beside your right hand."

The lever extended from a magnificent-looking bulkhead of intermeshed gears, burnished to a golden shine. Phase's trigger finger found a silver ring built into the top, that clicked just so when she settled her grip. The lever pulled like it'd just been oiled; Dignity's engine thrummed, a whole other chamber opening that hadn't existed before. The seat beneath her rumbled with power. "O-okay, now what?" Phase's voice shook in equal parts awe and terror. Her knuckles were white against the plush leather grips.

"See that big ol' crank wheel by your left hand? Crank it counter-clockwise, as far as it'll go," Vincent instructed levelly, albeit through a large smile. He turned to Yu; if what he'd said about the suit was true, somehow he was seeing him in the Net and Critias' perspective in the Net at the same time. Deciding to test that, he called to the man, "Remember what I said about Dignity's engine having more to show off? Watch this!"

The titan, for lack of a better term, erupted. Water gushed from nowhere into Dignity's reservoir tanks, pumping through overspill drains all across her torso in great gushing, splashing geysers. As Phase cranked, the water grew colder and colder until it steamed on contact with the virtual environment. Bottoming out her refrigeration turned it straight to rime; moisture so cold it immediately grew onto the nearest surface as ice. In seconds, Dignity's entire chassis was laden inches-thick, wrapped in glacier-like ridges down her arms and legs. Looming like a lighthouse, her high-beams cut a shimmering gold river through the frosty air.

"Okay," Phase sounded a little faint, "that was pretty cool, but we still need to attack, right? Dignity does that too?" Her hand finally relaxed off the clutch as the otherworldly rev spun back down; the temperature crank slowly retracted back to neutral. A screen was blinking that hadn't been before, displaying a red-hued Metool swinging its mattock. "Ground attack...? Vincent?"

"Right! Right, the chip!" The tinny voice snapped Vincent back to reality, from where he'd been gazing lovingly into the hologram of Dignity. "What you've got there is a SonicWave; the lads in class explained it as like a small earthquake with directional control. Shoddy physics aside, it should be loaded through your lead foot. You can load an aiming track with the screen there; to attack, just use your grip trigger and take one step forward. Simple, right?"

Phase took a long look over the control bank. There were more controls present than she had fingers...and toes. "Right...simple," she muttered, looking back up at the screen. The Billy, as the screen was calling it, was still lit up with an exclamation mark; she set it as best she could in the centre of Dignity's sights with feather-touches to her hand grip, forward with one side and backwards with the other. The titan edged on its feet with the industrial-sized screeches of giant metal feet against ground. "With the screen..." she murmured, tapping the screen experimentally. With a flash, her viewfinders lit up with a parallel blue railroad track highlighted on the floor, directly out from the point of Dignity's prow. "So it just goes forward?" She peered over her seat, hands ready on the controls. "Is there a range limit?" she asked, peering into the shadows where, she knew, more viruses lurked.

"Not as far as I know, no. It'll go until it can't go any more," Vincent shook his head, looking up to Dignity. The mech had begun side-shifting to starboard, maintaining a steady radius around the point where the Billy stood. "Going for extra credit?" he teased.

"Well," Phased huffed. Both butterfly grips were shunted as far to her right as they could, while she feathered just forward enough to send Dignity shuffling in a great circle, while keeping the Billy in her central sights. Behind the Billy, darting in the shadows were the Rattys. To try and keep up with one of their movements alone would be madness, but if Phase squinted a little and put her vantage point to use, she could see how their scurrying kept within a certain quadrant of the field. The titan rumbled and flexed, braced for action; the sharp point of her prow looked fit to cleave the Billy in two. It was as good a moment as any - she gunned her hand-trigger, and punched the grip forward. "Critias! Incoming shockwave from Dignity, avoid her line of sight!" Phase cried out, as the cockpit swung in its socket.

With Phase guiding the titan's arms up, stretching her tall, Dignity raised a leg skyward. Steam-powered hydraulics froze her stance long enough for Phase to regain her bearings - and the same hydraulic power then slammed the titanic foot down with might that registered in tonnage. The earth danced and rippled around Dignity's hoof - it was just, Phase noted, like Vincent had said: an earthquake that swept across the ground like a wave. A shock-wave - how very fitting. In all the shaking, she'd lost track of Critias. "Can you hear me? We'll need to work together to get through these things," her voice rang out. "How do you and Yu do it, when you're busting? You've done this before, haven't you?" Dignity returned to a neutral stance, balanced and ready in her frozen armour to take on all comers.

Yusaku was kinda enjoying the old man's antics and his ancient machine. "Hey Crit, the're slotting in actual chips." He said, the bat observing the sheet of ice around the robot being jerked out of his own thoughts. Critias chuckled. "It's their first time, Yu, give em a chance."

Yusaku walked a few steps forward. "SYSTEM COMMAND: BATTLE ROUTINE"

*Setting Battle Routine...chpfldr.iso loaded. Standby for execution.*

"Using Chips...pfft." Yusaku chuckled again, feeling his suit tighten around his body. On the net, Critia's body buffed up and darkened. Just like Dignity had its ice, Critias had his scales. From a matte purple, Critisa's hide cristallized into a deep amethyst shine. "Watch and learn, old man. This, is the power of the new gen."

A bluish circle composed of individual virtual cards appeared around Critias, spinning at a rapid pace. One of which flew out, up high into view as the young man called. "RageClaw , Battlechip in!"

The holochip dispersed into Critias' clawed hands, enlarging them to about twice their normal size. "You don't need Physical chips, Princess. Just call out what you need. We scanned your stuff in earlier. ISAC can handle the stuff."

With that, Yusaku had his navi High jump over the shockwave, before the two rushed to the viruses behind the other attack. The first target was the Billy, seeing as it posed a problem for the ice riddled mech. Critias faked a trip with his tail, before delivering a pouncing swipe of his claws with Yusaku guiding his navi's movements. Then, the bat's coat began shimmering with all the colors. The navi concluded their pouncing attack in the middle of the viruses.

If anything, both the navi and the human pilot both were very acrobatic.

"You may want to stay back now." Yusaku shouted to Vincent. Then, one roar later, Critias' pelt exploded outward. The attack didn't seem to carry any damage, but something else seemed foul.

Action 1: 30HP Casing
Action 2: RageClaw1Damage: 40 + Slashing (Attack) OR 20 + Impacting (Throw)
Accuracy: B / B then B
Description: Creates an impressive bear claw. Can be used to slash or throw enemies or objects.
Duration: Until Overridden/Broken. Breaks automatically after 6 uses.
Element: Null
Special: Throw: The wielder must first grab the target to be thrown, then the target is thrown in the direction/area indicated. A second check is made if against another object/enemy. Throw deals damage to both thrown object/enemy and the second object/enemy. Damage occurs at point of collision with the ground/wall/ceiling/etc. or an object/enemy, not during initial grab attempt. Objects deal their max HP in damage (instead of the chip's damage) if they hit an object/enemy, then break. If they miss, the object just takes the chip's damage. This chip has a variety of uses.
Trader Rank: D
: 40 + Slashing (Attack) OR 20 + Impacting (Throw) (Acc: B / B then B) at Billy.
Action 3: Blast 3, Glitch
Both old and new showed off their stuff, with the towering Dignity encasing itself in a frosty layer of rapidly hardening ice, and Critias covering himself in a shiny purple carapace of scales. Two of the Ratties at Dignity's feet were quick on the response, shooting out two spinning red bombs that scuttled about on the floor. They raced towards Dignity and Critias rapidly, crashing into them nearly instantly with their speed. The bombs made a skittering noise as they exploded, cracking through Critias's scales and heavily damaging Dignity's icy cover.

Critias was the first to respond in kind with his attack, thanks to his operator's rapid battlechip processing. The Billy was his target of choice, and he struck with the RageClaw to heavily injure it with a pouncing swipe. The attack coincided with the Billy firing off lightning bolts at the two, dealing an amplified amount of damage to Dignity's ice and slightly wounding Critias. (-10) At the same time, the spinning red cubes flashed a loud warning horn before firing off lasers to follow up the lightning attack, finally managing to crack Dignity's ice and injuring Critias further. (-20)

His response was to explode his hide outwards, infecting a couple of the viruses around him, as well as himself with some erratic effects. One of the DBLCUBE viruses started spinning extremely rapidly, and the Billy in front of him... grew some white hair, for some reason. Critias himself also suffered some strange effects; the claws he had equipped felt like they extended further into his arm quite painfully, feeling like they were growing up his arm.

At long last, Phase was now able to fire off her own attack, unleashing the Sonicwave battlechip onto the trio of Ratty. By a stroke of luck, she was able to line all of them up perfectly with the wave and took them out with a single strike. The last of the viruses to not act yet simply sat in place for the moment, though one could see a small green laser sweeping the area coming from the Satellite, which didn't seem to do much. Suddenly, the ColdHead's mouth snapped open, with a hiss of cold air escaping its maw, pointing itself at Dignity's now-exposed exterior!

An explosion buffeted at Dignity's armour, rocking her momentarily off-balance. Phase shrieked a little despite herself, hands flying up instinctively to cover her head. Her screenbanks flashed white; a loud buzzer sounded off somewhere in the nest of controls. "You wanna explain what's going on in here?" she snapped.

"I can do you one better," Vincent stepped into his own stirrup seat, taking up the butterfly grips, "I can drive. That buzzer was Dignity's weakness getting triggered, but we're still sitting pretty, we are." After a moment, his voice went soft. He held the PET closer to his face. "They're saying I don't need to slot in chips, so I can take the wheel. That is, if you're alright with it, that is."

Phase breathed deep. The muscles in her forearms slowly released their tension. "Alright. I trust you," she said simply, and after a few moments more she felt Vincent's guidance settle into her bones. The skate of her eyes down the screens felt more practised, somehow. Unbeknown to her, the massive man was scanning down his nose the same as though he were heading his classroom at Electown West: a well-practiced, sweeping lookout for danger. Phase did her best to follow along; he'd paused staring down the blue bobblehead, which the screens were helpfully labelling a ColdHead. There was a peculiar round aperture in its open mouth, which to the Navi of Professor Steampunk himself almost looked like -

"CANNON FIRE!" Vincent hadn't slipped the visor on for three seconds before he was bellowing at the top of his lungs A 7'8" man, it must be said, had a lot of lung capacity to offer the world. Already his hands were flying across the mock-console, directing Phase to a NaviCust readout blinking on an embedded screen. Flipping switches and cranking on the temperature wheel for all he was worth, he yelled heartily, even merrily, "TAKE COVER!" and shoved into his controls.

Dignity lurched into sudden motion. Creaking tremendously as the last of the ice was crushed between a thousand gears, she was shifting right even as ice bloomed underfoot. The same rapid creation that had armoured the giant was now spreading like something organic across the ground, following whatever mysterious instructions Vincent had punched into the console to form a wide, carving sweep of ice. With so much weight on her side, the momentum of one step was enough to keep her to an inexorable skid down the track.

"Alright, Yu, here goes nothing! Critias, that Billy's fit to roast Dignity if you don't get through with it!" Vincent took a deep breath, thought about all the professional NetBattlers he'd seen on TV. Phase's left thumb primed a hammer built into her grip. "CANNON: SLOT-IN!" he shouted. Wonder of wonders, the console chimed as a CannonDumb's mugshot appeared on-screen. Technology was incredible! "RETURN FIRE!" Vincent cried out, invigorated all over again by Yu's technological wonders.

The main gun capping off Dignity's left arm was wide enough for a man to crawl inside. It amplified nothing but the sound as Dignity's arm was levelled at the ColdHead, but what it could amplify, it did so with aplomb. The Cannon announced itself like a brass church bell; Dignity's arm recoiled with the force of the shot. Science-minded as ever, Vincent jinked the motion controls once more, trying to see if he could extend the Cannon's recoil into Dignity's skid, which had not stopped since he'd started into motion. "Phaaase," he groused as they went, hunched into the butterfly grips, "you aren't getting into this at all! Was it more fun when it was just you and Critias?"

Phase grunted with the effort Vincent was forcing through her arms. "Playing tag with Critias," she heaved, grateful at least for getting to keep her voice, "didn't involve getting shot at." Still, she had to admit, Dignity was moving a lot smoother under Vincent's hand so far. There was a logic to it, she knew, that she just wasn't seeing yet, but it was clear in the way Vincent barely had to think to move the controls. From her Operator, she would expect nothing less.

Critias and Yu winced slightly at he wounds that had been inflicted, but that wasnt going to stop them. Oh no. They were a relentless force to be reckoned with.

But first, they needed to bolster their defenses. They were kinda in the middle of the fight, purposely takig most of the aggro, so that Phase and Vincent would get an easier time synching together and fight. A translucent bubble popped up the moment the duo heard the deafening roar of a cannon shot. Apparently, Dignity had made its move. Now it was on them

Yusaku brought the Billy back into his field of view. He stared at it and lined up his next move. God he wanted that thing soooo dead. Critias roared, pouncing at the virus with all his bodyweight, trying to pin the elec virus down. He'd waste no time in opening his maw whide and chomp down hard on the virus, trying to consume both its life force and its beneficial glitch. He would take that for himself.

It would occur to Vin and Phase both to finally notice the navi's true nature. A glitch eater. Probably one of the few rather functional and not completely erratic.

If the prey was caught, the bat wyvern would purposely bite down harder, wounds closing up and muscles buffing up rather visibly. He'd get about twice his width. Critias would repay the little viruses for the pain they gave to his netop by inflicting as much pain as he could on his own.

Action 1: 30hp Barrier
Action 2: Aim at billy
Action 3: 20 null Lifesteal at Billy (melee range)
As the ColdHead locked itself onto Dignity's enormous exterior, Vincent took over control and created a sheet of ice for the massive mech to slide through, causing it to both miss the ColdHead's cannon fire, as well as the wayward sweeping green laser from the Satellite. The return cannon fire summarily destroyed the ColdHead with a powerfully recoiling shot. Critias had the enviable job of taking aggro from the one thing on the field that would be able to critically damage Dignity, and thus faced the Billy with a translucent protective bubble. He didn't really seem to need it against the Billy, though, as he pounced at the virus. Unfortunately, he came up short, as it did a backflip and posed in a strange dance before releasing its signature electrical ball. The ball did little except to hover slowly across the ground, so that wasn't really an issue, making them both look a little silly.

What wasn't as silly, however, was the barrage of beams that came from the DBLCUBES in the back. The first one fired beams that whizzed past a quickly moving Dignity that was sliding across the ice, and was absorbed by Critias's barrier, but the second one seemed more erratic in its firing pattern, and began firing on its own comrades as well, and even reflected one onto itself! One of the beams went past Dignity again, which Vincent was happy to evade for Phase with his forced motion controls.

All the chaos of combat looked different when observed from a solid twenty feet off the ground. Dignity's wraparound screens made for a beautiful panoramic view of the Net; having enough height to make everything look like a war room's tactical map didn't hurt when she had to get her greaves dirty. Thanks to Vincent's practiced eye, Phase swivelled in her seat to catch everything as it happened - including, as the case may be, her busting partner taking a nose-dive like a cat after a laser pointer, and the faceplant that ensued. She tried, she really did, but Dignity's loudspeaker still caught her muffled 'snrk', and projected it for all to hear.

Vincent was a little less polite about it, and a lot less quiet. The giant roared with laughter, eyes falling shut as he slapped his knee. "Oh, that was classic!" he crowed once he had the breath. Peeking under his visor for a brief instant and seeing Yu face-down on the floor in front of him, whatever he'd meant to say dissolved into a fresh bout of chortling.

Phase loved to hear her Operator laugh, that was a fact, but when Vincent's humour came at the expense of her vision and dignity, the sound began to wear a little thin. "Snap out of it, Vincent, we need to keep going!" she snapped, still mirroring his antics in the cockpit. She didn't want to know how much clapping and knee-slapping the loudspeaker had decided to catch, though she suspected all of it. Speaking sternly while you were pantomiming someone else's glee felt bizarre, but Phase was an old hand with the Scary Teacher voice. From out the loudspeaker, she barked "C'mon, Crit, quit screwing around and put those big claws to use!"

Metal feet screeched to a halt on the ice. The vibration was strong enough that Phase felt it through her seat, two stories above the ground. "Alright, alright," Vincent gasped, fighting to regain composure enough for the both of them, "we need to do something about these...D...B...Disco Cubes. Too many of those lasers and I'll be too blind to Operate!" He squinted down the icy line he'd just carved, shifting Dignity back and forth until he had his line plotted. He was just beginning to lean in when a buzzer sounded, startling Phase. He broke out in another wide grin. "Have no fear, that's just the engine recharging. Let's give her another crank!"

While the giant seemingly reached out towards nothing, Phase found that for one who knew to reach for it, the golden lever's placement was utterly optimised. Pulling it felt as smooth as pulling on her own arm. The physics of Dignity's cockpit started clicking into place in her mental catalogue, one cogwheel at a time. The crank by her left hand was for temperature; counter-clockwise for ice, and presumably steam if you went the other way and had all the right software in place. The lever was like the pedal on a manual car: engage the clutch, and from there punch in orders - in this case, mass-produce ice for defence. Possibilities danced in her mind as Dignity froze over. "What else can she do?" she murmured, mostly to herself.

"Well, this for instance: RageClaw: slot-in!" Vincent offered, leaning in and restarting Dignity's walk cycle. Immediately upon activating the chip, supercooled water flowed down Dignity's cannon arm, dripping down a projected wireframe around her bayonet and freezing into place. Within seconds, a scoop of interlocked crystalline bars was brandished before the cockpit's front screen, looking remarkably like a frozen cowcatcher. "You like it?" his expression was hopeful.

"I like it fine, it's just -Vincent, STEP!" Phase shouted, barely spotting the machinery as Dignity made to bulldoze forward. It was as classic a line as had ever been yelled by Phase, as one ungainly colossus taught another how to step on everything beneath knee-height. Thrown off-balance, Dignity threw her arms out for balance as her lead leg was forced to step far higher than what made for comfortable driving. The phantom motion made Vincent reel back in his seat; the paradox of feeling himself both at rest and wildly out of control was enough to turn the giant green. The mech crashed back down; what might have been a smooth, skating journey down the ice was rendered rather more perilous.

The DBLCUBEs loomed, blinking three - no, two in a row? Vincent's vision was still lurching back and forth, it was somewhat difficult to tell. Perhaps it wasn't the best time to be Operating heavy machinery, but there was nothing for it. He squinted to prepare for the laser light show he'd just given himself a front row seat for. Dignity's arm came up; the angle wasn't right to try for anything fancy, so Vincent just opted for the simplest strategy of raise heavy object, let drop. The lead edge of the RageClaw glimmered as Dignity wheeled around, steam engine hissing and chuffing. Her massive arm was hoisted higher and higher, hydraulics pushing the arm as high as the machine could reach - and all at once, gravity finished the work for her, icy claw slamming down to earth.

Both Yusaku and Critias turned around and gave the busting couple one hell of death stare. The amount of feral rage was immeasurable. The bat wyvern was being ridiculized by a stupid virus. That was not going to stand. This time no graph would be needed to measure just how pissed and butthurt Critias and by proxy Yusaku were. "You shut up!" they snarled, pouting. "We're trying." They added, forgetting that they were supposed to be the "pros" at Full Synchro fighting.

Then, the bat wyvern was swiftly back up on its feet claws, just in time to avoid being squished by the looming pile of bolt and ice behind him. Thankfully, Yusaku's one handed backflip was more than enough to clear the space between Critias and the robot, the purple navi ending the motion on all fours, roaring at the viruses. Man were they angry.

This time, he would fail. Critias' jaws would snap tight on that stupid Billy. If the thing had a jugular Critias would love to rip it out. First, he'd better consume the beneficial glitch the virus had for himself. With that done, the navi attacked and attacked and attacked. The thing needed to be dead. The cube didn't matter. That Billy needed to be stabbed, ripped to shreds. He wanted the fucking thing murdered. He wanted it dead. He wanted it completely annihilated.

They wanted its existance to be erased. No one makes em look stupid and live to get te tail. As such, once again, Critias' scales would harden in response to Yusaku's adrenaline rush. They didn't even try to move out of the way of that attack the Billy launched. Oh no. They would simply going to power through it.

With Critias mad as hell and Phase gradually growing accustomed to the placement and operation of her and Vincent's huge new toy, the viruses they were facing might feel slightly overwhelmed if they knew the number of individuals they were facing, despite the appearance of just two targets.

As they both restored and hardened their respective defences, the Billy released another twin bolt from its prongs. Critias took it face on without any attempt to avoid, and while the Dignity made some effort to move away, it wasn't particularly agile – at least not enough to avoid the jolt of shock that cracked against some of its icy overcoat.

Critias was ignoring the attacks of his foes and lashing out at the billy in front of him, but as he swung his first strike, a second shuddering jolt struck him from a blind angle, throwing off his attack. It wasn't enough to break through his defences, though he could feel the tracers of electricity coursing into him all the same, and he powered on to slash again, this time putting the electrical virus to bed for good. The aftershocks began to make his body lock and seize up a little, even if his defences had stood up so far, it still managed to sting.

Meanwhile, Phase and Vincent had crossed the field to the line of cubes, and prepared to start swinging. As they approached, the two cubs both released another blinding volley of red laser bolts. They each fired three; one each towards Critias and the Dignity, and a third one from each of them as well, that seemed like they might have been trying to aim at something in Dignity's location, but couldn't find a suitable line. Dignity itself was too large and in the way to avoid the slim red bolts, but its icy casing held up, just barely. Critias bore one of the two aimed at him, his outer hardened scales cracking away in the process, but fortunately the second beam missed him.

Then phase and Vincent clocked one of the cubes mightily, making it spin in place all the faster, until it settled on showing its blue faces to them instead. While all of this was going on, the satellite continued to sweep the field with its scan laser, but somehow, despite Dignity's extreme measurements, failed to get a proper lock on anything.

Amidst crashing ice and hissing steam, a whooping scream echoed. Vincent, who was fluent in Phase-speak, immediately recognised it as part of her extensive 'excited by experiments' repertoire, and grinned broadly. Like any good steam engine, they just needed a little time to gear up to speed. "Come on Vincent, work those skinny arms!" teased his PET in a crackly squawk.

Well, with an invitation like that! "Right then, Yu, I'll keep up the pressure!" he called across the room. He reset his stance, arms up at chest height, elbows at right angles, looking for all the world like a mime holding the world's largest steering wheel. "Might want to fall back a little; Critias is starting to look worse for wear, he is." Peering down, Vincent could see electricity crackling across the drake's scales. Having more options to cycle through meant Critias' defences were faster than Dignity's, but broke much easier too. Conversely, the last shivers of ice still clung stubbornly to the mech's hull like frost on a window, even as she wheeled back for another hammer-blow.

The process of winching Dignity's arm up, wheeling her torso around to add centrifugal force, and slamming her clawed bayonet over the DBLCUBE took visible seconds - seconds enough, Phase began to realise, for a virus to counterattack. "Vincent! You can't just stand still without shields up, Dignity's too big! She needs to keep moving!" she hailed midway through pulling down the butterfly grip. In lieu of verbal acknowledgement, her whole upper torso lurched forward and right. She caught an ill-placed lever to the ribs with enough force to make her eyes water, even as Dignity strafed right with great skidding sidesteps. "She's pretty light on her feet for such a big ship!" she shouted over the metal-on-ice screech; would she ever get used to that racket, or would it always pierce her ears so keenly?

The noise affected Vincent significantly less, by virtue of being a world away and having some moderate hearing loss for dampener besides which. "So long as you keep her on ice!" he quipped in reply. The initial skid had put Dignity facing perpendicular to the line of floating cubes; with one massive step of her left foot, she skidded into position. Her feet swivelled on the ice as her torso swivelled atop her legs, accelerating her RageClaw exponentially as it was brought to bear once more. "If I've not misread these numbers," Vincent gritted his teeth, fighting the phantom sensation of pushing an invisible lever. His arm finally extended full out, reaching first low, then punching high, "...then this should about...do it!"

Claw out, the mecha worked its arm in a bizarre parody of a modern excavator. Dipping low enough to scrape icy claws against the ground, the mech finished its sliding one-two with a great sweeping uppercut. Anti-gravity or not, that much force would take the cubist virus for a ride straight into its neighbour, if Vincent's eye was on-target in that moment. The claw was showing wear, the tips of the frozen claws splintered off, but Dignity was settling back into stance, ready to demonstrate there was plenty more where that came from.

"Critias, are you able to get off that magnetic ground?" Phase's voice rang from the bronze titan. Head-mounted floodlights lit up a wide cone of metallic ground around the wyvern. Helpfully, Vincent turned to face him as she continued, "That claw won't be much use if you're stuck where you are. Get to somewhere safer, and we can work together to deal with what's left." With the benefit of her Operator's guidance and several tons of frozen metal, her voice was steady.

Both Critias and Yusaku growled, the man and the bat fighting against the paralyzing attack. Thankfully, he didn't need to move for his own barrier to regenerate.

"We're a bit...stuck at the moment" the couple said, finding it hard to even speak. They could only follow Dignity's movement with their eyes. Stuck like that, they could just brace for impact and hope flr the best. Well, technically there was a thing they could do.

Yusaku and his partner cloed their eyes and concentrated. Their body was under the effect of a glitch, yet they were naturally resilient towards it due to Critia's nature. The bat's code would continuosly rewrite itself over and over, integrating the glitch code into itself. It was able to slowly fight off any kind of glitch on their body and turn it into strength.

"You guys doing great over there, don't worry about us. This ain't nothing compared to the undernet..."

Free Action: Glitch Eater on themselves.
Action 1: Barrier.
The paralysis incurred from the earlier attack meant that Critias was a little stuck in place, being only able to regenerate a defensive barrier while repairing the effects of the earlier glitch inflicted on him. The Satellite seemed to take the chance and swept its targeting laser onto him, quickly confirming a lock. It shot up into the air, with the whir of its minigun whispering distantly in the skies. On the more mobile side, Vincent took the very thinly defended Dignity for a ride, taking Phase away from a laser shot out of the red cube. Its range was within Critias's position, but the laser it fired his way was thankfully reflected off of his barrier. The clawed bayonet that was swung onto the other Cube hit home, before making its best impression of an out-of-control excavator arm to launch it towards its comrade. The thrown cube was summarily destroyed, while the other one that was hit was only barely chipped, spinning about before glowing a distinct blue.

Upon Dignity's screenbanks, Phase watched wireframes wrap in concentric rings around Critias, a little blue plus painted over his chest. She didn't need to know Vincent's shorthand to understand the significance of the bulls-eye. Well-trained to report incidents as they were discovered, she called out to Vincent, "Something's just activated! Critias is in trouble, can we reach something high up?"

Vincent hrrmmmed and took the both of them for a chin-rubbing. "You know," he mused, "I think we can. Stand-by to gun the engine, Phase; this time we're not touching anything but the lever." He reached out to brace himself against a lever only Phase could see. Critias was hunched over down below, visibly bracing and concentrating his power. Across the room beyond his visor, he could hear the clinking of Yu's suit as he mirrored his Navi. To the pair he barked, "You'll want to bunker up, you will! Dignity's got firepower enough for the one sighting you, if you can get this last ruddy laser-box!"

As Vincent pulled, Phase felt Dignity come alive around her ears. The sound was akin to giving a heavy machine's accelerator a good punch and letting it rev long; the engine Vincent had named for her was building up steam in thunderous rumbles, thrumming through Phase from her underbelly straight to her toes. Her breath caught in her throat. "Vincent," she gasped, body trying to pitch forward. She hung from her Operator's phantom grip a moment, looking momentarily lost before coming back to herself, voice only a little strangled as she asked, "alright, alright, now what?"

"Now?" Upon hearing her Operator speak, Phase's arms were rising over her head. Dignity's cannon arm winched high, high into the air, tracking the Satellite by the tip of the many-pronged bayonet. Her other arm rose beneath it, bending ninety degrees and locking a hand just inside her left elbow with a heavy clang. "We try our hand at being an anti-air battery. AquaNeedle, slot in!"

The chip brought Dignity's shoulder mortar online, painting Dignity's viewfinders with ballistic arcs and target zones that dizzied Phase to try and take in all at once. "The one targetting Critias has done us a favour, it has, and shot up to a very convenient angle for us to pop. It's just a matter of using Dignity's arms to track..." Talking as he worked, Vincent took Phase's hands off the butterfly grips and left Dignity immobile but for the mortar, which swung as he spun a crank to and fro on the console deck. On finding his mark, he took up the right grip once more and thumbed a hidden trigger. Over the first muffled boomph, he shouted, "and there you have it!" before being drowned out.

Twice more the mortar fired, muzzle puffing white smoke. Vincent's masterwork engine was precise enough to carve into each icy missile a host of fins and rifling, giving the artillery strike a spiraling flair. They ascended to their peak in a perfect line, only deviating into a blast pattern above the Satellite once gravity and wind had reasserted control. Already, Vincent was reaching for the gearshift. "Wait!" Phase called suddenly, halting her own limbs in their tracks. Frantically, she explained, "Dignity's okay, Vincent, you don't need to keep blasting ice as fast as you can work the lever. Just...just make sure the job's done, before anything else."

For a long beat, Vincent was silent. Inwardly, he was beaming with pride, thinking 'yes, yes, she's taking control back, she's okay, my girl is Okay.' More vocally, he acquiesced with a simple, "Well alright, then." With Dignity still frozen reaching to the skies, it was the work of a moment to prime the left grip and get Dignity's cannon arm back online. Without any proper ammunition, the mecha's systems fell back on their factory defaults, which weren't quite enough to form a recognizable stream from the cannon on their own. What manifested instead from the barrel was more like a bullet of air, projected from excess steam pressure without any of the actual moisture. It nonetheless carved a visible trail of rapid distortion through the air, physical enough, at least, to serve as the proverbial cherry on top of the melee. Only then did Vincent maneuver the grips back to rest position, letting Dignity idle as he scanned the landscape for a jewel-bright violet ripple.

In the meantime, Critias and Yusaku were deep in one of those trance like states. It happened alot when they fought together. Their thoughts and actions all blurring into each other's as the human piloted his partner through the advanced motion suit.

Once again, Critias' scales hardened. The navi seemed to regenerate incredibly fast. The navi was like a snake. It constantly shed his scales for new ones. Perhaps a trait of a battle hardened navi.

"Battlechip, shotgun!" The human called, the navi reeling in a big breath before sending a wide cone of ultrasound waves at the cube Vincent had asked Yusaku to take care of. The madman Yu had even customized his own chip attacks. There was just no limit to the amount of obsessive detailing the guy had done on his navi.

Critias grinned, preparing himself to bob and weave. Soon their position would be strafed with bullets and they shouldnt be there a second more. Thankfully, their muscles weren't locked up by elec attacks no longer. They could move again!

With only a small remaining threat left on the field, Vincent and Phase prepared to finish it off while Critias refreshed his own defences against the impending barrage that was heading his way from above. The satellite began to fire, and though it target tried to get away the magnet panels beneath Critias' feet gave him some real mobility problems. Fortunately, as he was showered in the stream of tracer shots, his barrier held out just long enough for the virus to expend its charge.

It clicked back into its targeting mode and began to settle back down to the ground, but a volley of shots from the Dignity hammered into it one after another as it dropped, knocking it about and causing the virus to land poorly, broken and barely continuing to function.

The remaining cub began to glow a brighter blue once more, but before it could send out a restoring bolt to the damaged satellite, a shotgun blast from Critias ripped through it and threw the cube back and to the ground where its light dimmed and faded and it began to break down. After convincing her operator that she didn't need to be too precious about herself or her dignity, Phase punched in the controls to take a finishing shot at the last virus, breaking it apart once and for all and leaving just the two navigators in the clearing, along with the poorly disguised mystery data that had managed to survive the exchanges of fire power.

Primary Attack Accuracy: C

Special: Immobile outside of its primary attack.
Special: This virus will repeat its primary attack until it finds a target, after which it will be able to use its secondary attack once. Notes: Triggering invisibility or an illusion, or moving the Satellite forcefully after Lock-On is achieved does not allow a target to escape Lock-On. Lock-On is a shift in the Satellite's state, not a status inflicted on its target, and thus cannot be removed.
