Jeff Makov's homepage

As Broadside jacked in, the net immediately erupted around him. Ahead of him, the knight navi Jared had seen on Jeff's PET display was hit by shots from three sides, after which he fell off his beaver mount and was promptly EJO'd.

In the wake of his disappearance from the net, there was a lull in the battle just long enough for the smoke to clear, showing the battlefield in full. Suffice to say, it was much more than three DarkMechs and a good impression of Broadside. In fact, eight virus groups, each of three to four apiece, surrounded the center, all but the DarkMechs directly before him trained on it but appearing to have a hard time actually aiming. In the center, meanwhile, was the rogue antivirus defense system itself: a turret system that towered over the other viruses with eight swiveling cannon mounts that could be rotated to face in all directions. Right now, however, only half of them were aimed at the virus groups surrounding it, and the other four were all trained on the newest target: Broadside.

Three small turrets were also present on the edges of the battlefield: two in the distance on either side of Broadside, and a third on the far side of the viruses.

The moment Broadside and Ro arrived, the network exploded around them as artillery shells rained down from all directions. The two of them hunkered down almost immediately, covered their heads, and hoped that would be enough to keep them alive as the enemy shelled them. Through a gap in the barrage, Broadside saw the client's Navi gunned down and EJO to safety just a moment before another salvo of artillery fire blanketed the area. The shelling continued for several more seconds before it ceased suddenly, and left the area shrouded in billowing black smoke.

The two combat programs, still hunkered down to avoid the rising smoke, reached up to their helmets, and tapped their left ear covers. This caused metal plates to slide out from the front edges of the sides of their helmets to form lower face guards. Now protected against the possibility of damaging or debilitating smoke, the two stood up and quickly glanced around. While neither of them were able to see anything of the area around them, they were able to just barely see each other. The two quickly exchanged hand signs indicating they were unharmed before they turned their attentions back towards the slowly thinning smokescreen.

Broadside activated his long-disused battlecom protocols, and spoke to both Ro and J.T. through it in his usual neutral tone. "Update: Ally down; Enemy possesses excessive firepower; Numbers unknown; Visibility zero. Ro, status?"

Ro's voice came back over the three way private channel and replied simply: "Ditto, chief."

Just as Ro finished speaking, a fresh FastGauge arrived in Broadside's memory banks, followed quickly by an ElecReel1. His Net Op's voice came over the link a moment later. "There are more than two dozen viral signatures out there with the bogus anti-virus system. Broadside, I'm giving you permission to use heavy weaponry in this mission."

"Acknowledged." Broadside said as he reached up and tapped the emblem on his chest with his right hand. This action triggered Broadside's form shift, and printed the status message [Emergency Override: Engaging Combat Form Protocols][b][/b] across the PET screen. As the text faded from the screen, Broadside's entire body began to glow softly, as if he were about to jack out. The details and features of his form faded into a human-shaped mass of light. The mass of light soon lost its shape, and began expanding into an enormous sphere. The sphere eventually stopped growing, and contracted once again to form a massive glowing silhouette. The silhouette's features solidified into Broadside's true form: that of a massive 15 foot tall, heavily armed, and well armored Mech.

As the form shift completed, Broadside activated the FastGauge chip he'd received a few moments ago. When the chip was activated, Broadside's processor control settings went from normal operation mode to 10% over-clock. He took advantage of this increase in speed to load the ElecReel1 into his weapon systems, and launched all six of his H/K remote weapon platforms in the few remaining moments before the smoke finally cleared. The H/K's swiftly and silently flew through the air, and assumed a loose formation around Broadside as the dissipating smoke revealed a battlefield swarming with viruses.... And that blasted rogue security program.

A stray thought floated through the back of Broadside's mind as he got his first look at the huge number of enemies he was about to do battle with. When you pick your battles, you certainly don't pick the small ones, do you.... He certainly couldn't refute that dust-dry assertion, and didn't plan to try even if he could. Instead, he started painting targets with his fire control.

Broadside quickly raised his weapon arm, and brought it to bare against the massive towering structure that was the rogue Anti-Virus System with unusual quickness. The forward section of the arm split open to reveal Broadside's Rail Driver, and had already charged before the arm finished rotating upwards. The increased processing capacity from the effects of the FastGauge allowed the huge Navi to bring up his heavy weapon protocols without any of the usual performance loss he normally experienced whenever he employed the resource-intensive attack scripts. And it was certainly showing now as Broadside locked onto the target and fired, all in less than five seconds after the pillar-like arm began to move.

The Rail Driver crackled with lightning as it spat the Metool-sized Bunker Buster shell at the target. The shell broke the sound barrier before it was halfway along the Rail Driver's magnetic rails, and was shedding luminescent streams of smashed sub-atomic air particles as it exited the barrel at hyper-velocity. It left a brilliant spiraling trail behind, almost an afterimage, as the projectile lanced through the intervening space between gun and target in under a tenth of a second. As the shell reached its pre-defined attack range just beyond the target, the warhead exploded and launched the second-stage projectile directly into the ground beneath the target. The second stage projectile stabbed through the surface of the network, and bored deep into the ground. When it reached its pre-programmed depth, the tiny warhead broke the thin containment capsule allowing anti-matter and volatile plasma to mix. The resulting subterranean explosion shook the battlefield, and magnetized a huge swath of the battlefield's surface.

Without skipping a beat, Broadside and all six of his H/Ks opened fire as the towering Navi activated his ElecReel1 in the wake of his Bunker Buster MK-II attack. Charged particle beams shot out in ripple-fired salvoes from Broadside's quartet of shoulder cannons while each of the H/K's added a single beam of their own to every armor-smashing salvo Broadside fired. Just after this new attack began, Broadside flared his thrusters and rumbled along on his dash-rollers. One after the other, the Mecha Navi engaged entire groups of targets with a plasma storm of massed beam cannon fire as he blazed along the edge of the battlefield at high speed.

----

Just as Broadside was preparing to fire the opening shot at the rogue security program, Ro jetted forward and took a swing at the nearest DarkMech with his RageClaw. "Let's do this, ugly!" His slash came from high-left, and flashed down and to the right as his body twisted to add even more force to the swing. The move was intended to slam the virus into the ground and possibly take it out of the fight for a few seconds while it recovered. The SP completed his swing, bringing his body to into a low stance with his Riot Shield before him for protection against retaliation. Ro shifted his weight back, fired his jets at half-power, and boosted backwards, away from danger just as Broadside began his massive beam barrage. Ro kept his guard up as the range quickly opened, and ended his evasive retreat with a final boost-jump to the right to throw the enemy's aim off.

The moment Broadside shifted to his mech form, every one of the rogue antivirus's guns turned on him. He refreshed his armor and sped his systems just in time before they all fired, destroying his armor and barrier. Another shot from one of the side turrets damaged him once the armor fell. Broadside retaliated with a rail driver shot that hammered the main turret system, magnetizing the terrain beneath it and preventing the turret system from firing a third time.

Following up on this attack, Broadside summoned six H/Ks and fired on the entire battlefield at once, reducing one of the turrets and all but three of the virus groups to bugfrags.

Of the groups that weren't destroyed, only about a third of the viruses took any damage whatsoever. The plasma bursts aimed at the rest simply shot straight through as though they weren't even there. Indeed this seemed to be the case with the other groups as well, as while there were bugfrag remnants from a third of the destroyed viruses, the only evidence that the rest may have existed at all was plasma burns in the net where they had been.

This strange feature seemed to be emphasized as Ro attacked one of the undamaged DarkMechs, only for his rageclaw to pass right through as though the virus wasn't even there. The target of his attack fired one of its stun shots, but this too simply passed through Ro. The damaged one followed up the moment it was obvious the first shot had no effect, but Ro managed to dodge it.

The other virus groups continued attacking (and missing) the turret system, seemingly oblivious to the two.

Jared looked at the screen and smirked as Broadside's attacks passed through the majority of the viruses harmlessly. He'd seen this before many times in his years of tech support work. I should have seen that one coming. Those viruses are all fakes, which means that security system in there is one of those scam jobs. Mr. Makov, here, went online, found himself a website claiming it would give him a free virus scan, and clicked it thinking that was alright. He gets his scan, the scan tells him he's up to his ears in viruses, and provides a free download link for some anti-virus software. Jared sighed in disgust. It's all a lie, though. The moment he clicked that download link, he allowed the enemy in. I wonder just how much information they stole from him while they wrecked his PC. I really hate the people who do this. It keeps me employed, but it's just... A sad statement about humanity, I suppose. Jared frowned as he looked down at the screen and watched his Navi fighting the Trojan. "Broadside, the anti-virus programs are your enemy. Terminate them. Mark the viruses as neutral. They may be falsely labeled programs. If they become aggressive, defend yourself." As he finished speaking, Jared slotted in an ElementalRage1 battlechip, and mashed the [Send] key.

-------

"Acknowledged." Broadside replied as he slowed down from full dash speed, but continued circling the field in the wake of his attack. He sent out a recall order to the H/K remote weapon platforms, and returned his shoulder cannons to their storage positions. While the H/Ks were docking with the hangar on Broadside's back, the Type-B repair subroutine identified which damaged armor plates were warped or disintegrated beyond repair, and ejected them only to form fresh plates in their place. The remaining armor reformed itself while the barrier generator cycled up and projected a new defense field.

While Broadside's defenses restored themselves, the mecha Navi readied his his next attack. He shunted the MagBomb1 data into the mortar in his upper torso, and the Shotgun data into the cannon in his lower torso. The armored panel on Broadside's upper torso split, and opened to either side before swinging back into his armor chassis. The mortar deployed just as he rotated his torso to face the Antivirus Turret System, and fired a moment later. If I time this right, the enemy will have to see through a wall of plasma, deal with the effects of electromagnetic interference, and shoot through a cloud of steel. And that is not even talking about what this should be doing to them at the same time...

As the MagBomb1's mortar shell arced through the air towards the target, Broadside deployed the cannon that was kept hidden behind a drop-away section of blue colored armor at the bottom of his central torso. Trajectory calculated... Target locked... Fire! Before the MagBomb1's shell could directly impact with anything, Broadside fired a high velocity RAP shell from the lower torso cannon, and intercepted his own mortar round mid-air. The bomb exploded into a large sphere of highly disruptive energy that would grow to engulf a sizable area while it wreaked havoc upon all caught within, while a large, dense cloud of heavy guage buck-shot burst from the center of the explosion.

After launching the combination attack, Broadside altered his course and began rumbling towards the zone of Magnetic terrain his Bunker Buster attack had created a short time ago. He retracted the mortar and the cannon back to their storage positions, and closed the armored panels behind them before he ignited his thrusters to surge ahead. As Broadside accelerated, he shunted the freshly received ElementalRage1 chip data into his remote hanger, and gave the command for three of the H/K's to launch. One after the other, the six-foot long silvery-white obelisks dropped from their bays and towards the ground. However, none of them actually hit the ground, as their gravity drives kicked in and propelled them suddenly up and away. Once they had a clear line, each of the three, one after the other, angled to point towards their individually assigned target before attacking. The forward two-thirds or so of each Hunter/Killer opened to reveal a 4-way split barreled cannon that charged and fired a particle beam at the enemy. After attacking, the remote weapons closed their cannons, and returned to dock with the hanger on Broadside's back once again.

----

Ro, meanwhile, wasn't buying this DarkMech being anything but a DarkMech. "Yeah, uhh... no. If it looks like a DarkMech, it moves like a DarkMech, and it throws thunderballs like a DarkMech..." Ro shouted as he dodged the thunderball in question. "...Then chances are, it's a DarkMech." With that, the SP rushed the virus and took a swing a it with his RageClaw1 as he dashed past. He then ignited his powered armor's thrusters and blasted away from where the DarkMech had been in a prolonged low-trajectory jump towards the next closest virus group; the Bashers. And I've got a plan for what to do with them once I get there...

Before Broadside could do anything, the turret system charged up another shot and...shorted.

In the time the magnet terrain prevented the rogue antivirus from doing anything, Broadside restored his armor and readied a barrier, then launched a mortar at the turret system. Being immobile, the antivirus of course couldn't dodge, but instead of waiting for it to get hit Broadside readied a shotgun blast and hit the mortar with it. Perhaps the breaking attack wasn't such a good idea, though, as instead of causing the bomb to explode in mid air, it shattered it, sending shrapnel from both the bomb and shotgun in all directions. Both remaining turrets were hit and affected by the magnetism, as well as the damaged DarkMech and Basher, but the shrapnel explosion missed the turret system entirely.

Broadside then launched himself across the ground toward the turret system. As he did, six more viruses appeared on the homepage, as well as a turret that popped out of the ground just after Broadside passed over its location and came to a stop on the edge of the magnet terrain. One of the viruses, a snowblow, appeared several feet away from its intended location and landed on the lone cracked section of the homepage, falling through. Its partner, which appeared where it was supposed to, didn't seem to notice and began firing mechanically at the turret system. The other viruses, at least some of them, seemed to have finally noticed Broadside's presence. Though the damaged basher failed to fire, the others pummeled Broadside with magnum shots, though only one hit and another flew through him harmlessly.

In addition to blowing away Broadside's barrier, the shot that hit also tore a hole through the floor of the net, revealing a second level below the ground.

The weakest DarkMech, also rendered useless by the shattered magbomb, tried in vain to escape from the slashing arc of Ro's rageclaw, but failed. The other two that had been there did nothing, as though realizing that they had been found out, while the two new arrivals fired electric bursts at Ro, but missed as he charged toward the Bashers.

The turret system, meanwhile, finally managed to get off a shot, crippling Broadside's armor again. Broadside and a trio of H/Ks retaliated with a particle beam attack that further damaged the main turret system and destroyed the magnet-locked smaller turrets. The turret system fired a second time and missed, while the new and now only remaining small turret fired off a weak shot as an afterthought, but hit.

As a magnum blast blew through the barrier protecting Broadside, and a second blasted a hole in the ground, Ro's voice came in over the comm link: "See? I told you they were viruses."

Jared nodded, quietly happy they really were viruses since that meant Broadside hadn't been blowing away Progs. "Yeah, I see that. And that trojan horse is downloading more viruses." He reached around to the chip case he wore on his belt, and felt along the case until he'd counted six markers. He grabbed the chip in slot six, a TwinFang1, and slotted it in after looking at it to make sure it was the correct chip. Jared mashed the [Send] key before he reached for the next chip... "Deal with it before you're swarmed."

----

Broadside didn't have a spare moment to respond to his Operator as the central turret nailed him with a cannon blast that damaged his armor badly enough to cause it to fall away. That's when the newly summoned turret made itself known by firing a shot right into his backside. The giant mecha Navi was startled by the unexpected attack, and then felt moderately embarrassed that he'd be caught like that. The thought that coursed through his mind unbidden did not help matters at all. Hahahahahaaaa! The 'mighty' Broadside got spanked by spyware. Right about now, he wished the voice in his head would just shut up, yet it was a vain hope.

About the time the TwinFang1 data arrived, Broadside had moved on from embarrassment to irritation as indicated by the frown on his face. His armor had just repaired itself and the barrier generator was cycling up to project a new defense field when the Navi's weapon arm split to reveal the Rail Driver. Broadside twisted his torso slightly and rotated his arm to point backwards and down at the sub-turret. He was able to detect the target with his sensors, and once the weapon was properly pointed at it, see it through the scopes built into the tips of the cannon's two halves. Once the offender was in his sights, Broadside fired a steel spike from the Rail Driver.

Broadside was still somewhat irked afterwards, as he stared right at the source of his current troubles. He rotated his weapon arm forwards and up; bringing it to bare against the central turret. The Rail Driver spat the second steel spike from between the two halves of the barrel with a discharge of electricity and a sonic boom as the projectile broke the sound barrier. The spike left a glowing double helix spiral of smashed particles in its wake as it shot across the intervening distance faster than the eye, or even Broadside's sensors, could follow.

Broadside lowered his weapon arm and deactivated the Rail Driver as his legs stomped around to face to his left. He performed this action while his body remained facing the trojan turret. He then ignited his boosters, and accelerated away in a side-ways dash. He was considering firing the lone ZapRing1 still sitting in memory at the target when a fresh ElecReel1 arrived in his memory banks. Now that certainly beats a ZapRing. He redirected the data to the various weapon systems he'd employed in the first ElecReel attack, and began lighting up targets with his fire control. As he did this, he spotted Ro moving towards the Basher group. "Ro, break off approach. Bombardment commencing in 5."

----

"Roger, Broadside." Ro responded as he killed power to his thrusters, and slowed to a jog. Figuring he'd make himself a target if he just stood there and waited, the SP shifted direction to the left and began a run-up. Once he was moving at a decent clip, he flared his boosters again. Ro performed a quick evasive dash before killing power to his thrusters once again. As he scrambled to a stop, the SP turned to face the viruses, and readied his rifle to take a shot at any tangible survivor that caught his eye. Can't let the chief do all the work, now can I?

----

Terminating with extreme prejudice. With that thought, Broadside fed the targeting data to his H/Ks and ordered all six of them to launch. A moment later, and the barrage of charged particle cannon blasts began suddenly. Broadside's four shoulder cannons fired in no particular order at the viruses while the H/Ks added their own shots to the attack. The beams lanced out at the viruses one after the other as the particle cannon bombardment tracked its way across the programmed firing arc. At the end of the attack, Broadside recalled the remote weapons, and returned the shoulder cannons back to their storage positions as he deployed his massive Tower Shield to cover against viral retaliation. Somewhere off to his right, he heard Ro's rifle fire.

Broadside restored his armor and barrier just in time before the Bashers opened fire again, though only one hit, blowing away his newly refreshed barrier. The turret system once again shorted due to the effects of the magnet terrain, giving him time to prepare and fire two spikes in opposite directions, which plowed into their respective targets.

The turret system retaliated with two cannon blasts, which Broadside evaded, but only barely, making full use of the FastGauge's power.

As he charged up another ElecReel attack, Ro stopped running at the Bashers, which unfortunately drew the attention of the DarkMechs once again. He made to dodge, only for it to be pointless as the one that attacked happened to be one of the fake viruses, and countered with a weak attack that managed to find one of, if not the only real one.

Broadside let the ElecReel attack fly, destroying what was left of the turret system and badly damaging the remaining viruses. As the turret system exploded in a shower of sparks and shrapnel, one each of the newly arrived viruses as well as the ones that had already been revealed as illusory appeared to flicker out of existence for a few seconds before being restored, while the remaining SnowBlows vanished completely. Of course, in the case of them and the Bashers, the lightning had passed straight through one of them anyway. Though perhaps of more concern was the fact that the fake virus images were restored at all, rather than simply disappearing when the turrets were destroyed.

The real, undamaged DarkMech took the opportunity as Broadside set up his tower shield to fire a stun blast and rush at the mech. The blast, along with both slashes, merely bounced off the shield.

Above the remains of the turret system, a faint number "4" flickered in the air half a second before disappearing.

As the particle cannon bombardment ended, Broadside twisted his torso to face the remaining Basher. He deployed the cannon in his lower torso, and shunted the ZapRing1 residing in memory into the cannon's capacitors. The weapon immediately spat a single disc shaped ion bolt that spun on its horizontal axis as it flew towards the virus at high speed. The snapshot came off fast enough that the ion shot was already in the air when Broadside's defensive protocols, both working on a timer, reached the beginning point of their next cycle. The barrier generator cycled up and projected a fresh barrier, like clockwork. The armor repair protocol, however, detected no damage and went into standby until the end of the new cycle. The H/Ks returned to their docking slips in the hangar during this time.

At about this time, a fresh selection of chips, including a Shotgun, a MagBolt1, and a Thunder1, appeared in Broadside's memory. He quickly selected the MagBolt1, and shunted it into his Tower Shield. Broadside grabbed hold of the handle on the back of the Tower Shield and unhooked it from the shoulder mount it was usually attached to. He then hunched forward slightly, and ignited his thrusters. The moment the thrusters flared, Broadside triggered the MagBolt1 and braced the shield against his arm. The Tower Shield glowed golden as megawatts of electricity surged openly across it's surface. As the Mecha Navi surged forward, the shield pulled at the DarkMech like a giant electromagnet. Batter-up, little virus~ A moment later, Broadside twisted his torso and swung the Tower Shield at the virus in a grand rising arc.

----

Ro, meanwhile, saw the DarkMech rush Broadside, and decided not to fire at it a second time. He instead shifted his aim to the sole remaining Basher, and fired off a quick shot at it... only to see an ion blast streak into view towards the virus. The SP quickly shifted his aim back to the DarkMech, but didn't fire at it as he saw Broadside rush the virus. Ro lowered his rifle, and watched the proceedings with the same morbid fascination humans had for watching imminent train wrecks.

Broadside's ZapRing hit the Basher dead-on, deleting it instantly. As it collapsed, the remaining magnum viruses faded into nonexistence.

He then proceeded to rush the DarkMech, which fired a stun blast and rushed right back. The stun bold bounced harmlessly off the shield, but Broadside countered anyway with a magnetic shield bash which, for some reason, split the virus in half on the edge of the shield. Like the bashers before it, the illusory DarkMechs faded into nonexistence.

Ro fired off a shot at the remains of the Basher that Broadside had just destroyed for good measure, but it didn't become any more dead than it already was. He then watched the carnage as Broadside finished off the last of the viruses and stood in the middle of an empty homepage.

Though no viruses appeared to remain, he would get the feeling that the battle wasn't quite over yet, if for no other reason than the number "3" flickering over the remains of the turret system.

As the last of the viruses fell, Jared's voice came in over the PET's communication link. "Broadside, You and Ro go ahead and gather up the remains of the viruses you've deleted then jack out."

"Explain?" Broadside said as he recalled his Hunter Killers, and returned his weaponry to their standby states.

"If my guess is correct, you have until that counter hits zero before that trojan program regenerates."

"Are you joking?" Ro chimed in as he turned to look at the smoldering remains of the Anti-Virus Turret System. The SP raised an eyebrow at the number floating above the battle scarred terrain. "Bossman toasted that thing, and you're telling us it's making a comeback?"

"Uhh... yep. That's my guess." Jared didn't sound happy.

"Acknowledged." Broadside replied as he returned his tower shield to it's standby position at his side. The mecha Navi then issued a command for the H/K's to launch and sweep the field for data fragments. It wasn't long before the remotes completed this task, and returned to the hangar on Broadside's back. The Navi and his SP exited the virtual space immediately after.

((To: Sharo))
((From: Sharo))

Broadside and Ro entered the virtual space of the PC as a pair of falling beams of light. The smaller of the two struck the ground, and resolved into the Navi-sized form of Ro.SP. The larger one hit and resolved into the massive form of Broadside.EXE's mecha frame, which towered over the SP by a good 3 meters.

Just then, Jared's voice came in over their com link. "Broadside; Ro; I want you two to find the core of this Trojan, and delete it. That program you deleted earlier was just a satellite. You can kill those all day long, and they'll just keep coming back until you take out the core. Data recovered from the last battle suggests it's most likely not on this level of the harddrive either. You may need to break your way into another sector to find it. Take anything out that tries to stop you, but keep moving. The more time you take geting there, the more time this Trojan has to spread through the system." Jared paused and smiled. "The good news is, I've severed the link with the network. The Trojan can't download anymore viruses, and bury you with sheer numbers. It's not much, but it's a start."

Ro piped up: "I'll take what I can get."

"Acknowledged, and appreciated." Broadside nodded as he began to move forward, weapons ready.
The damage from the last battle, Broadside would notice, had not been restored from when he jacked out. The remains of the deleted viruses had dissolved, but the wreckage of the turrets still remained in the positions where they had been destroyed. The destroyed turret system still sat in the middle of a magnetized section of the ground, and the holes torn through the network by the Bashers continued to give Broadside a partial glimpse of a sector below the homepage.

The smoke obscuring the background of the homepage had lifted, but instead of a standard background Broadside could see across to other areas of the harddrive it was stored on, though none of these other areas appeared accessible.

In his absense, a single small turret and six viruses had appeared on the homepage, but either hadn't noticed the other or had dropped the act, as all were sitting idly before Broadside arrived. The viruses likely were downloaded before the network connection was cut, but as Broadside watched a second turret appeared on the opposite side of him from the first.

After the new turret appeared, a "0" flickered above the ruins of the larger system. Magnet panels and rubble broke apart and were cast aside as a new, undamaged system rose up to replace the old one.

>BATTLE START<
As Broadside surveyed the scene, he processed the current situation through a set of filters... Those filters were his 'orders' and 'intelligence data' he'd received from Jared. As he did so, his external armor casing materialized over his frame, and the barrier generator pulsed a defensive field around his SP, Ro. By the time the defenses were up, Broadside had come to a decision about how to best carry out every aspect of his 'orders'. Which meant he had only one question to ask his operator: "Jared, is there any data on this sector of the hard drive that could be considered critical to the client?"

----

Jared hesitated a bit before answering. He actually double checked the drive diagnostic tool before finally uttering a cautious "Err, no?" He then tabbed through the menu with practiced quickness, read the specifics of that drive sector, and answered again with a bit more confidence. "No, there's actually nothing in the area but you..." As Jared finished speaking, he hit the [Send] key, and transmitted the half dozen chips he'd loaded into the PET earlier. I think I'd better mute the speakers....

----

"Good." Broadside said as he deployed hos tower shield and launched a trio of his H/K's to harass some of his enemies. The remote weapons took to the sky, and flew quickly over the enemy formations. They then swooped down upon both of the cloudy viruses and the main turret system, opened, and fired a bubble trap's glass shell from their miniature rain guns. The remotes pulled up and away with speed only small unmanned craft were capable of, and quickly returned to their docking slips in the hangar upon Broadside's back.

Broadside, meanwhile, took a half step back, and deployed the anchors in his feet and lower legs to secure himself firmly to the ground. Ro heard the anchor mechanisms working, and retreated quickly to the area behind his Navi master. No sooner had he darted away from the viruses, than the H/K's had returned from their strafing runs and began docking. It was at this time that Broadside raised his coffin-like weapon arm, and pointed the blunt end at the towering structure that was the main turret for this drive sector. The forward two thirds of the weapon arm split horizontally, and separated vertically; wide enough for a metool to stand comfortable between the two halves of the deploying weapon. The two pairs of rear safety locks that kept the weapon from operating sprang into view, and the cannon's split tines extended to double their original length. Another two pairs of glowing blue locks deployed, and the Deletion Cannon's weapon system came fully online.

Time seemed to slow as the energy collection grids opened at the back of the arm, and the giant cannon drew in power from the computer's own supply. The space between the cannon's split barrel halves began to glow. As the glow intensified, the light of the virtual space and everything around it seemed to dim. The charge peaked... Time halted...

The cannon fired.

----

Jared's view screen flashed and died. The video drivers had gone into safe mode temporarily, and were now in the process of rebooting. I am somehow glad Jeff didn't see that.

The new turret system wasted no time firing on Broadside, breaking his armor as soon as it was refreshed. Before it could get off another shot, however, he had raised his tower shield and the turret itself, as well as the two cloudy viruses, were encased in bubbles from three of Broadside's H/K units.

As he anchored himself to the ground, the two turrets fired on Ro. Both hit, but their weak shots did little more than collectively destroy the barrier cast on him. He retreated behind Broadside, but not because of the attacks. Rather, he was smart enough to get the hell out of the way while the oblivious viruses tried to attack. The Bashers only managed to heavily dent the tower shield, while the Shellgeeks fired at where Ro was before moving and, of course, missed.

Meanwhile, Broadside unveiled the massive Deletion Cannon and aimed at the trapped turret system. Time slowed to a stop as the weapon charged....then fired.

While Jared's display was rebooting, residual electricity from the blast arced across the ground, spreading from the targeted turret system to both satellite turrets and all of the viruses. When it had nowhere else to go, it went into the ground itself, shattering the surface and collapsing it, dropping everything to the level below.

When the smoke cleared and the arcing electricity faded, Broadside found himself deep in the harddrive and face to face with a glass cylinder taller than he was, stretching as high as where the ceiling would have been had he not shattered it. Inside was a column of machinery with fiber optic tendrils spreading through the ground to other areas of the had drive. The turret system above had fallen into the glass case, and as Broadside watched the trojan core fed data into the turret. It disintegrated, and rematerialized on the ground outside, the damage it took from the Deletion Cannon only partially repaired. A second turret system rose from the ground on the opposite side of Broadside, fully functional but looking somewhat unfinished. Two smaller turrets also appeared, just beyond a pair of prism objects flanking the glass casing.

WARNING: AREA IS FILLED WITH SENSITIVE DATA

Chips refreshed. FINISH THIS THING!
As the floor gave way, Broadside retracted his anchors and returned the Deletion Cannon to its closed storage configuration. This spared both the anchoring system and the cannon from sustaining unnecessary damage from flying debris. It also served to make any potential landing less likely to be a bad one, as the anchors would have struck first and most likely been broken and mangled beyond repair. The same went for storing the Deletion Cannon, as having that weapon deployed would have badly dislocated Broadside's center of gravity. The potential negative effects of landing badly on it were something Broadside earnestly hoped to avoid.

The Navi and his SP plunged to the floor below....

----

Meanwhile, in the real world...

----

Broadside's memory banks performed a data dump in the aftermath of changing sectors in the hard drive. His systems had temporarily exited battle mode as he crossed the threshold... He was slightly less than happy to discover his combat protocols had come back online again, as it most notably did so with an empty chip register. When the smoke and EMI cleared, Broadside discovered he'd really been stuck with the short end of the stick. Still, he was fully prepared to fight with what he had available to him, and was just about to do just that when a flood of fresh chip data entered his memory banks. The new chips included a pair of MagBolt1s, a pair of BubbleStar1s, and a pair of Heat-Vs.

Bless the man! An unbidden thought all but cheered in the back of Broadside's mind. Jared really comes through for you in the crunch, big guy.

Indeed. Broadside wasted no time in feeding the BubbleStar1s to all six of his H/K attack units. As soon as the first three were loaded and ready, he designated the core and both of the larger turrets as targets and gave the order to launch. The remotes dropped out of their hanger slots in a wave, stopped just short of striking the floor, and took to the sky. Once they had a clear line of sight upon each of their targets, the split barrel rail canons that made up the front two-thirds or so of each of the flying weapon platforms opened up. The rail drivers charged up, and each H/K spat a single glassine shell filled with the aqua based substance that would form a bubble trap around and of the targets they managed to hit.

As the H/Ks launched and attacked, Broadside charged up his Gigas Fist with MagBolt1 data and deployed the rollers he used for ground dashing. As the remotes finished their attack runs and began retreating to the hanger, he deactivated his tower shield, and returned it to its storage position at his side. Once the shield was no longer blocking Broadside's right arm, he raised his glowing right hand towards the Core, and allowed the strong electro-magnetic pull to draw him forward. Unless something went horribly wrong, Broadside would glide forward on his rollers, and his enormous mecha fist would plow right into the tempered glass structure surrounding the Core.

As the Navi lurched forward, the second wave of H/Ks were fed targeting data and launched. This wave was programmed to strafe the Core and both of the smaller turrets flanking it once Broadside's initial Magbolt attack ended. As soon as the remotes completed their attack runs, Broadside planned to charge his fist with the second MagBolt1, haul off, and strike at the Core with everything he could throw into it....

----

Ro, meanwhile, realized there really wasn't a whole lot he could do in this situation except pray he didn't get shot to pieces. He'd already observed how the smaller and larger sized turrets operated. And with two of the larger variety on the scene, the Support Program knew he was terminally screwed if even one of them decided he was a target worth shooting at. Evasion was completely pointless at this range. Instead, the SP stood there quietly for a few moments, and hoped letting the much larger and more immediately threatening Broadside act first would spare him from 'viable target' status. Once Broadside began to act, Ro raised his rifle quietly and took aim at something more his size... namely, the closest of the smaller Turrets.

The smaller turrets opened their fire on Ro, seeing it as a weaker, and therefore easier target, but were thwarted by the projected barrier Broadside protected the SP with. (DefenseEX down) The Turret Systems were about to unload their bullets on Broadside, but were suddenly trapped, as Broadside's H/K units fired their shells at the systems, trapping them without much difficulty. (20 to Glass/SystemA/SystemB) Then, charging his Gigas Fist with a healthy dose of electrical power, Broadside slammed into the glass protection that enveloped the core, sending a crack straight across its cylindrical length. (110x2 to Glass) The core seemed to object to this, as a tendril of fiber optics sprawled out from behind Broadside, and took a pot shot at him. Fortunately, that, too, was averted, by Broadside's thick armor. (10 to Casing) Then, Broadside launched another wave of H/Ks of the same design as before, which sent their shells towards the small turrets instead, as well as the core. (20 to Glass/TurretC/D) Then, his gigantic electrically-charged fist crashed forth on the trojan core once more, finally breaking the glass protection on the core. (260 to Glass, 70 to Core) The trojan core responded in anger, its many lights turning red, sprouting ever more of the fiber optic tendrils. Screens appeared around it, stating for all to see in bolded red: "DELETION THREAT. INITIATE ELIMINATION MODE."

Meanwhile, Ro, trying to look as small a target as possible, shot one of the turrets to deletion with ease.

As soon as the glass shattered, Broadside took half a step back, and shifted his right shoulder cannon to the ready position. As soon as the barrel locked into place, the Navi loaded the Heat-V's data into the magazine's firing queue, and aimed the weapon at the Prism to the right. As soon as the cannon's barrel aligned with the target, the cannon fired a volley of flaming fragmentation rounds at the Prism. If all went well, the Prism would redirect the entire barrage at the nearest target.... namely the Core.

With the Heat-V away, Broadside raised his weapon arm to point at the Core. The weapon split horizontally, and separated vertically to reveal the Rail Driver, which was already charging. The Mecha Navi queued up a MK-II Bunker Buster shell, and loaded it into the weapon's 'chamber'. The shell floated into the space between the two electromagnetic rails, and hovered there, locked in place by opposing forces while the driver finished coming fully online. Once the rails were fully charged, the Rail Driver fired the shell at the core at point blank range, at speeds approaching C. There wasn't even enough space between the cannon and the target for the usual brilliantly glowing streamers of smashed subatomic particles to properly show up in the wake of the shell's passing. The range was simply too short.

Almost immediately after the cannon fired, the second stage warhead had already triggered. The ground rumbled, and the terrain beneath everything in a large radius around the Core changed to Magnetic. If this didn't kill the Trojan off, it certainly would make life more difficult for it....

----

Ro, meanwhile, took aim at the newly appeared turret behind Broadside, and fired a couple of shots at it.

Launching a few fiery threats at a nearby shiny rock, Broadside refracted all the power of the Heat-V into the Prism, causing it to fire a massive laser beam at the trojan core, damaging it heavily. (280 to Core) Already, vital parts of the machine were falling off, and becoming inactive mush. Just as it was about to do something about it, it was staring down the barrel of Broadside's Rail Driver, charging to fire one of Broadside's many heavy artillery choices, the MK-II Bunker Buster shell.

The surroundings rocked with the force of the blast as a large hole was bored into the trojan core. The turrets and their respective systems, which were about to fire, immediately stopped working, whirring down and exploding, in typical cyberpunk style. The tendrils of fiberoptic lay still on the ground, their master completely destroyed into pieces. The core's numerous lights and beacons were all unlit. Finally, after some time, the core absolutely fell apart, disintegrating into minute junk data that spilled out on the floor like some misplaced caffeinated drink.
