As the last of the viruses fell, Jared's voice came in over the PET's communication link. "Broadside, You and Ro go ahead and gather up the remains of the viruses you've deleted then jack out."

"Explain?" Broadside said as he recalled his Hunter Killers, and returned his weaponry to their standby states.

"If my guess is correct, you have until that counter hits zero before that trojan program regenerates."

"Are you joking?" Ro chimed in as he turned to look at the smoldering remains of the Anti-Virus Turret System. The SP raised an eyebrow at the number floating above the battle scarred terrain. "Bossman toasted that thing, and you're telling us it's making a comeback?"

"Uhh... yep. That's my guess." Jared didn't sound happy.

"Acknowledged." Broadside replied as he returned his tower shield to it's standby position at his side. The mecha Navi then issued a command for the H/K's to launch and sweep the field for data fragments. It wasn't long before the remotes completed this task, and returned to the hangar on Broadside's back. The Navi and his SP exited the virtual space immediately after.

((To: Sharo))
((From: Sharo))

Broadside and Ro entered the virtual space of the PC as a pair of falling beams of light. The smaller of the two struck the ground, and resolved into the Navi-sized form of Ro.SP. The larger one hit and resolved into the massive form of Broadside.EXE's mecha frame, which towered over the SP by a good 3 meters.

Just then, Jared's voice came in over their com link. "Broadside; Ro; I want you two to find the core of this Trojan, and delete it. That program you deleted earlier was just a satellite. You can kill those all day long, and they'll just keep coming back until you take out the core. Data recovered from the last battle suggests it's most likely not on this level of the harddrive either. You may need to break your way into another sector to find it. Take anything out that tries to stop you, but keep moving. The more time you take geting there, the more time this Trojan has to spread through the system." Jared paused and smiled. "The good news is, I've severed the link with the network. The Trojan can't download anymore viruses, and bury you with sheer numbers. It's not much, but it's a start."

Ro piped up: "I'll take what I can get."

"Acknowledged, and appreciated." Broadside nodded as he began to move forward, weapons ready.
The damage from the last battle, Broadside would notice, had not been restored from when he jacked out. The remains of the deleted viruses had dissolved, but the wreckage of the turrets still remained in the positions where they had been destroyed. The destroyed turret system still sat in the middle of a magnetized section of the ground, and the holes torn through the network by the Bashers continued to give Broadside a partial glimpse of a sector below the homepage.

The smoke obscuring the background of the homepage had lifted, but instead of a standard background Broadside could see across to other areas of the harddrive it was stored on, though none of these other areas appeared accessible.

In his absense, a single small turret and six viruses had appeared on the homepage, but either hadn't noticed the other or had dropped the act, as all were sitting idly before Broadside arrived. The viruses likely were downloaded before the network connection was cut, but as Broadside watched a second turret appeared on the opposite side of him from the first.

After the new turret appeared, a "0" flickered above the ruins of the larger system. Magnet panels and rubble broke apart and were cast aside as a new, undamaged system rose up to replace the old one.

>BATTLE START<
As Broadside surveyed the scene, he processed the current situation through a set of filters... Those filters were his 'orders' and 'intelligence data' he'd received from Jared. As he did so, his external armor casing materialized over his frame, and the barrier generator pulsed a defensive field around his SP, Ro. By the time the defenses were up, Broadside had come to a decision about how to best carry out every aspect of his 'orders'. Which meant he had only one question to ask his operator: "Jared, is there any data on this sector of the hard drive that could be considered critical to the client?"

----

Jared hesitated a bit before answering. He actually double checked the drive diagnostic tool before finally uttering a cautious "Err, no?" He then tabbed through the menu with practiced quickness, read the specifics of that drive sector, and answered again with a bit more confidence. "No, there's actually nothing in the area but you..." As Jared finished speaking, he hit the [Send] key, and transmitted the half dozen chips he'd loaded into the PET earlier. I think I'd better mute the speakers....

----

"Good." Broadside said as he deployed hos tower shield and launched a trio of his H/K's to harass some of his enemies. The remote weapons took to the sky, and flew quickly over the enemy formations. They then swooped down upon both of the cloudy viruses and the main turret system, opened, and fired a bubble trap's glass shell from their miniature rain guns. The remotes pulled up and away with speed only small unmanned craft were capable of, and quickly returned to their docking slips in the hangar upon Broadside's back.

Broadside, meanwhile, took a half step back, and deployed the anchors in his feet and lower legs to secure himself firmly to the ground. Ro heard the anchor mechanisms working, and retreated quickly to the area behind his Navi master. No sooner had he darted away from the viruses, than the H/K's had returned from their strafing runs and began docking. It was at this time that Broadside raised his coffin-like weapon arm, and pointed the blunt end at the towering structure that was the main turret for this drive sector. The forward two thirds of the weapon arm split horizontally, and separated vertically; wide enough for a metool to stand comfortable between the two halves of the deploying weapon. The two pairs of rear safety locks that kept the weapon from operating sprang into view, and the cannon's split tines extended to double their original length. Another two pairs of glowing blue locks deployed, and the Deletion Cannon's weapon system came fully online.

Time seemed to slow as the energy collection grids opened at the back of the arm, and the giant cannon drew in power from the computer's own supply. The space between the cannon's split barrel halves began to glow. As the glow intensified, the light of the virtual space and everything around it seemed to dim. The charge peaked... Time halted...

The cannon fired.

----

Jared's view screen flashed and died. The video drivers had gone into safe mode temporarily, and were now in the process of rebooting. I am somehow glad Jeff didn't see that.

The new turret system wasted no time firing on Broadside, breaking his armor as soon as it was refreshed. Before it could get off another shot, however, he had raised his tower shield and the turret itself, as well as the two cloudy viruses, were encased in bubbles from three of Broadside's H/K units.

As he anchored himself to the ground, the two turrets fired on Ro. Both hit, but their weak shots did little more than collectively destroy the barrier cast on him. He retreated behind Broadside, but not because of the attacks. Rather, he was smart enough to get the hell out of the way while the oblivious viruses tried to attack. The Bashers only managed to heavily dent the tower shield, while the Shellgeeks fired at where Ro was before moving and, of course, missed.

Meanwhile, Broadside unveiled the massive Deletion Cannon and aimed at the trapped turret system. Time slowed to a stop as the weapon charged....then fired.

While Jared's display was rebooting, residual electricity from the blast arced across the ground, spreading from the targeted turret system to both satellite turrets and all of the viruses. When it had nowhere else to go, it went into the ground itself, shattering the surface and collapsing it, dropping everything to the level below.

When the smoke cleared and the arcing electricity faded, Broadside found himself deep in the harddrive and face to face with a glass cylinder taller than he was, stretching as high as where the ceiling would have been had he not shattered it. Inside was a column of machinery with fiber optic tendrils spreading through the ground to other areas of the had drive. The turret system above had fallen into the glass case, and as Broadside watched the trojan core fed data into the turret. It disintegrated, and rematerialized on the ground outside, the damage it took from the Deletion Cannon only partially repaired. A second turret system rose from the ground on the opposite side of Broadside, fully functional but looking somewhat unfinished. Two smaller turrets also appeared, just beyond a pair of prism objects flanking the glass casing.

WARNING: AREA IS FILLED WITH SENSITIVE DATA

Chips refreshed. FINISH THIS THING!
As the floor gave way, Broadside retracted his anchors and returned the Deletion Cannon to its closed storage configuration. This spared both the anchoring system and the cannon from sustaining unnecessary damage from flying debris. It also served to make any potential landing less likely to be a bad one, as the anchors would have struck first and most likely been broken and mangled beyond repair. The same went for storing the Deletion Cannon, as having that weapon deployed would have badly dislocated Broadside's center of gravity. The potential negative effects of landing badly on it were something Broadside earnestly hoped to avoid.

The Navi and his SP plunged to the floor below....

----

Meanwhile, in the real world...

----

Broadside's memory banks performed a data dump in the aftermath of changing sectors in the hard drive. His systems had temporarily exited battle mode as he crossed the threshold... He was slightly less than happy to discover his combat protocols had come back online again, as it most notably did so with an empty chip register. When the smoke and EMI cleared, Broadside discovered he'd really been stuck with the short end of the stick. Still, he was fully prepared to fight with what he had available to him, and was just about to do just that when a flood of fresh chip data entered his memory banks. The new chips included a pair of MagBolt1s, a pair of BubbleStar1s, and a pair of Heat-Vs.

Bless the man! An unbidden thought all but cheered in the back of Broadside's mind. Jared really comes through for you in the crunch, big guy.

Indeed. Broadside wasted no time in feeding the BubbleStar1s to all six of his H/K attack units. As soon as the first three were loaded and ready, he designated the core and both of the larger turrets as targets and gave the order to launch. The remotes dropped out of their hanger slots in a wave, stopped just short of striking the floor, and took to the sky. Once they had a clear line of sight upon each of their targets, the split barrel rail canons that made up the front two-thirds or so of each of the flying weapon platforms opened up. The rail drivers charged up, and each H/K spat a single glassine shell filled with the aqua based substance that would form a bubble trap around and of the targets they managed to hit.

As the H/Ks launched and attacked, Broadside charged up his Gigas Fist with MagBolt1 data and deployed the rollers he used for ground dashing. As the remotes finished their attack runs and began retreating to the hanger, he deactivated his tower shield, and returned it to its storage position at his side. Once the shield was no longer blocking Broadside's right arm, he raised his glowing right hand towards the Core, and allowed the strong electro-magnetic pull to draw him forward. Unless something went horribly wrong, Broadside would glide forward on his rollers, and his enormous mecha fist would plow right into the tempered glass structure surrounding the Core.

As the Navi lurched forward, the second wave of H/Ks were fed targeting data and launched. This wave was programmed to strafe the Core and both of the smaller turrets flanking it once Broadside's initial Magbolt attack ended. As soon as the remotes completed their attack runs, Broadside planned to charge his fist with the second MagBolt1, haul off, and strike at the Core with everything he could throw into it....

----

Ro, meanwhile, realized there really wasn't a whole lot he could do in this situation except pray he didn't get shot to pieces. He'd already observed how the smaller and larger sized turrets operated. And with two of the larger variety on the scene, the Support Program knew he was terminally screwed if even one of them decided he was a target worth shooting at. Evasion was completely pointless at this range. Instead, the SP stood there quietly for a few moments, and hoped letting the much larger and more immediately threatening Broadside act first would spare him from 'viable target' status. Once Broadside began to act, Ro raised his rifle quietly and took aim at something more his size... namely, the closest of the smaller Turrets.

The smaller turrets opened their fire on Ro, seeing it as a weaker, and therefore easier target, but were thwarted by the projected barrier Broadside protected the SP with. (DefenseEX down) The Turret Systems were about to unload their bullets on Broadside, but were suddenly trapped, as Broadside's H/K units fired their shells at the systems, trapping them without much difficulty. (20 to Glass/SystemA/SystemB) Then, charging his Gigas Fist with a healthy dose of electrical power, Broadside slammed into the glass protection that enveloped the core, sending a crack straight across its cylindrical length. (110x2 to Glass) The core seemed to object to this, as a tendril of fiber optics sprawled out from behind Broadside, and took a pot shot at him. Fortunately, that, too, was averted, by Broadside's thick armor. (10 to Casing) Then, Broadside launched another wave of H/Ks of the same design as before, which sent their shells towards the small turrets instead, as well as the core. (20 to Glass/TurretC/D) Then, his gigantic electrically-charged fist crashed forth on the trojan core once more, finally breaking the glass protection on the core. (260 to Glass, 70 to Core) The trojan core responded in anger, its many lights turning red, sprouting ever more of the fiber optic tendrils. Screens appeared around it, stating for all to see in bolded red: "DELETION THREAT. INITIATE ELIMINATION MODE."

Meanwhile, Ro, trying to look as small a target as possible, shot one of the turrets to deletion with ease.

As soon as the glass shattered, Broadside took half a step back, and shifted his right shoulder cannon to the ready position. As soon as the barrel locked into place, the Navi loaded the Heat-V's data into the magazine's firing queue, and aimed the weapon at the Prism to the right. As soon as the cannon's barrel aligned with the target, the cannon fired a volley of flaming fragmentation rounds at the Prism. If all went well, the Prism would redirect the entire barrage at the nearest target.... namely the Core.

With the Heat-V away, Broadside raised his weapon arm to point at the Core. The weapon split horizontally, and separated vertically to reveal the Rail Driver, which was already charging. The Mecha Navi queued up a MK-II Bunker Buster shell, and loaded it into the weapon's 'chamber'. The shell floated into the space between the two electromagnetic rails, and hovered there, locked in place by opposing forces while the driver finished coming fully online. Once the rails were fully charged, the Rail Driver fired the shell at the core at point blank range, at speeds approaching C. There wasn't even enough space between the cannon and the target for the usual brilliantly glowing streamers of smashed subatomic particles to properly show up in the wake of the shell's passing. The range was simply too short.

Almost immediately after the cannon fired, the second stage warhead had already triggered. The ground rumbled, and the terrain beneath everything in a large radius around the Core changed to Magnetic. If this didn't kill the Trojan off, it certainly would make life more difficult for it....

----

Ro, meanwhile, took aim at the newly appeared turret behind Broadside, and fired a couple of shots at it.

Launching a few fiery threats at a nearby shiny rock, Broadside refracted all the power of the Heat-V into the Prism, causing it to fire a massive laser beam at the trojan core, damaging it heavily. (280 to Core) Already, vital parts of the machine were falling off, and becoming inactive mush. Just as it was about to do something about it, it was staring down the barrel of Broadside's Rail Driver, charging to fire one of Broadside's many heavy artillery choices, the MK-II Bunker Buster shell.

The surroundings rocked with the force of the blast as a large hole was bored into the trojan core. The turrets and their respective systems, which were about to fire, immediately stopped working, whirring down and exploding, in typical cyberpunk style. The tendrils of fiberoptic lay still on the ground, their master completely destroyed into pieces. The core's numerous lights and beacons were all unlit. Finally, after some time, the core absolutely fell apart, disintegrating into minute junk data that spilled out on the floor like some misplaced caffeinated drink.
