Man 'n Machine

+4 FXP

The two navis continued along Electown Net and came to a curious sight. Magnetic terrain surrounded a strip of Solar panels in the middle of a road. Floating above the Solar panels were three boxes with question marks emblazoned all over. Underneath the boxes was a Bunny, hopping back and forth. Wandering around on the Magnet terrain was a Billy, with its electrically charged lightning rod arms.

A pair of rumbling flames off to the west signaled giant metalic mouths rushing in to terrorize, including the boing, boing of a pogo stick virus.

Another earthly rumble came up from behind as their way back was cut off by a tank.

Finally, to the east, a Scarecrow seemed to materialize on the only patch of metal left here, anchoring to the ground. It began to bob and weave along with a multi-tiered cactus creature that shuffled up beside it. It got stuck to the Magnetic terrain and so was almost as immobile as the Scarecrow. Finally, the roar of an engine up in the sky to the east signaled a diving FighterPlane.

-- Battle 2 Ready? Start!! --
As the towering bat circled about Scourge, laughing and mocking her, and spouting some absurd nonsense with terms she didn't understand, Scourge bared her teeth in a clear wide-grinned grimace. Her eye twitched incessantly, as she tried to hold herself back from outright slugging the annoying Navi, while her bindings tightened about her in response to her tension. There was still time for her to simply walk away. She never wanted to meet anyone; all she asked for was a nice quick session of wanton viral destruction after being rudely woken up by a bad dream. She certainly didn't need some strange Navi talking down to her with terms she couldn't even understand. What even was an "NSD Navi", and what did being a "tsundere" have to do with it? It didn't help that the Navi seemed to like to flip between vocal tones in a confusing manner.

In the real world, Sofia was still as confused as her Navi was, with no more of a clue about the strange Navi's ramblings. As it seemed like Scourge was keeping quiet, she assumed that the Navi was in trouble of some sort, and resolved to try to help on her own. Then, out of the corner of her screen, she saw something that, to her, confirmed her lingering suspicions. "!! Viruses!" she whispered to herself. This Navi could have been someone from before she lost her memory, setting her up for an ambush. Thus, there was only one thing to do. "I gotta help her!"

Meanwhile, in the Electown network, Scourge's barely-restrained ire was interrupted when she heard the sound of something clattering nearby. Glancing towards the source of the noise, she noticed her operator pouring out the chips from her folder in front of her with a serious expression on her face, looking at them one by one frantically. Wondering why she was doing so only took her a moment, as she noticed the viruses around them creeping in one at a time. Two grew to four, to six, to nine. Suddenly, she felt one, two, three Battlechips asserting themselves in her processing queue; Sofia had already started slotting them in without having to refer to her. Awed briefly by how fast her operator was learning, Scourge caught herself. She had to focus on the present. Scanning the area, she narrowed her eyes as they darted about between the viruses and the stalker Navi currently circling her. Was she going to have to deal with them simultaneously, she wondered.

That question was asked swiftly when Critias swooped in and wrapped his long tail around her waist, saying something about an ambush. Unfortunately, she had no intention of even listening to a word that was said after that. "GET OFF ME!!" she growled in fury, as her fist launched into a straight uppercut, imbued with one of the chips that had been given to her by Sofia. The punch, while not being much of any help in dealing any damage, would infect anyone it came into contact with a debilitating weakness. As she had lost her sense of pain, she was unable to determine whether the punch connected, but she was quick in getting herself out of the bind regardless. A sudden burst of wind would engulf Scourge as her bandages rapidly extended to cover her in a shroud of wrappings, before they collapsed inwards into thin air--Scourge had vanished.

High in the air, a whirlwind of cloth erupted out of nowhere, revealing Scourge in freefall, with a massive black sphere above her. She brought her hand down, and the BlackBomb sphere launched itself rapidly towards the eastern group of viruses, while she herself fell down towards terra firma. Thankfully, the last chip that Sofia had given her would help with that as well. The ground directly beneath her split open abruptly, revealing a tall totem statue that shot up towards the sky next to one of the viruses. As she touched down on top of its uppermost head, its bottom-most face rapidly rotated itself towards the BlackBomb, and breathed out a plume of fire towards it in order to light up the battlefield. Standing on the Totem, she looked down towards the rest of those on the ground on the Electown crossing with a serious-looking frown.

Critias swiftly dodged the punch, assisted by his NetOp. "looks like she doesn't want to listen to you."
Critias scoffed. "Tch. I try to warn her and I get punched in the face. "

Yusaku shrugged. "Eh, You can't be friends with everyone. Deal with these viruses and then we'll let them do their own thing. There's no reason to worry if we're just going to be an annoyance.

"Right. Battle Routine, Execute."

Critias's defensive systems flared to life, his scales hardening and a barrier popping out. Thanks to the unruly little undead he had to take extra care. "If she does it again I'm snapping her in two like a twig."
===================
Action 1: Dodge
Action 2: 20Hp Casing
Action 3: 20Hp Barrier.
With the sight of fresh viruses approaching, it seemed as though Scourge didn't take too kindly to the condescension from the other navi... her first reaction to the uninvited physical contact was to slap her theoretical busting partner with a nasty debuff that sapped a good portion of strength from his limbs, and move free of him. It seemed she was taking the sarcastic challenge of dealing with the fight herself somewhat seriously now...

Independent of each other, the pair raised defences, while the Bunny hopped directly upwards, bumping the block above it with the tops of its ears. A chime sounded from the solar panels, before the spinning question mark disappeared and the bock jumped up another foot in the air on its own, before settling back. Something that vaguely looked like a stylised red flower sprouted from the top of the box, and the bunny seemed fascinated by what it had discovered.

The Billy virus was less impressed and more focused on the pair of navis that had shown up, sending two lances of electricity towards them. Its main focused seemed to be on the large bat-like navi, who looked the more immediately intimidating of the pair, but Critias dodged away from the bold easily enough. The second zap missed Scourge by a wide margin without her needing to avoid it at all, which was fortunate, as her focus was on other things at that moment anyway.

As she made her plans quickly, the Catack trundled forward, curving around them in a wide arc as it drew into the centre of the area and launched a bomb. Its treads hit the edge of the magnet a moment later, however, and it stopped still, stuck. The bomb landed between Critias and Scourge, or rather, between Critias, and where Scourge had previously been; as the blast send spider-web cracks through the ground underneath them, Critias wore the attack on his barrier without harm, and Scourge had teleported away in the nick of time.

She appeared above the Volgears on the western side of the area, and they both turned in place at her sudden arrival. The pair immediately blasted flames up at her, but one acted a bit too pre-emptively, and she navi hadn't reached the ground yet before its fires were spent, while the other didn't quite manage to line up her dropping trajectory well enough, and the flame column erupted just a hair's breadth to the left of where she actually landed.

Unable to see what was going on between the columns of flame, the scarecrow opted to face itself towards the bat-navi instead, and called a small bolt of lightning onto itself, which it redirected outwards towards critias in a sizzling line. It shattered his armoured casing, but fortunately left the navi himself unhurt.

The next stage of Scourge's plan involved summoning her intimidating black bomb near the clustered group of viruses across the field from her, carefully judging the range as best she could. The FighterPlane seemed to recognise the threat this represented and dived on Scourge, swinging low to strafe her with its guns. Scourge herself was in the process of summoning her next tool, and though most of the tracer shots would have been accurate, only two of them actually connected with her, as she rose up on her familiar totem, away from the line of fire. The plane saw the totem's leering face and tried to bank away, but the fire erupted from its mouth a moment later and scorched through the plane, as well as incinerating the pogo stick, which had looked like it was about to try to pile-drive both Scourge and her tower. More importantly, the flames passed by the now-central Catack, just barely, and instead managed to lick at the casing of her bomb.

The result was predictable, and excessively loud. The explosion engulfed the entire eastern side of the area, and much of the central space between the virus groups as well. Of the Scarecrow and Cacty, nothing was left. The Catack, too, was caught in the range, as was the Fighter, its tail destroyed by the edge of the blast wave, sending it crashing into the ground not far from the base of Scourge's totem.

Critias wobbled aroud. "F-fuck...Yu, I can't move right. That bitch is so gonna get it if she does this again."

Suddenly, the bat wyvern's body stiffened. "Calm down now. It just means I will have to fight in your place. Might not be 100% optimal, but I'm sure you'll move better when piloted. Plus, I get to test how the FullBody Feedback Suit reacts while under stress."

Critias simply noded and went limp, his netop now controlling the bat's body. "Sorry. You know how it is. I get more feral at night if I don't keep myself in check all the time."

The bat, rather...Yusaku, sprung westbound to pull off another sonic blast. For Yusaku this was a whole new experience. With the costume he invented he could feel what it was like to be in Critias' paws, which meant that he too felt the sting of pain of the debuff. But it was fine, he had set some pain inhibitors on his navi. While pain always revealed itself to be a useful tool, with a navi it could be made so it would not get to debilitating levels. Now he was Critias, and he had to be careful. This was a real battle, and they were at a disadvantage. He needed to move swiftly to avoid deletion.

The combined firepower of the BlackBomb as well as the Totem brought a satisfied grin to Scourge's face, with the light of the flames reflecting off of her eye. The wrappings that had protected her from stray attacks were slightly torn up, but they were quick to repair themselves, and she was once again at full fighting power. An oddity in the form of a red flower caught her eye briefly atop the question marked-box, but her attention was directed elsewhere when the smoke cleared, as she saw that the attacks had been quite successful, wiping out over half of the battlefield's enemies. "Heh, heh. Alright, not bad. Not bad at all. Good chips, Sofia," she chuckled, looking quite elated as she turned towards the private feed's screen next to her.

"Thank goodness..." said Sofia in relief, though worry still painted her face as she looked past Scourge, towards the towering bat that was a little further out. "What about that guy, though? I sent you those chips because I was afraid that he was going to hurt you or something, but... it looks like he's not doing anything."

Scourge turned towards the other Navi, who seemed to be weathering the indiscriminate virus attacks relatively well, but was otherwise looking a little weak; her uppercut earlier was working its intended effect. Still, while she had done so half out of impulsive rage, Sofia's insight did seem to be paying off, as it looked like he wasn't directing any attacks towards her. Perched atop the towering Totem pole, Scourge was amused at the reversal of who was looking down at the other. "Yeah, it looks like he's just trying to keep himself out of firing range of the viruses. Guess I kind of did a number on him," she said, her eyes narrowing at the sight of Critias's figure, as she saw his defenses going down on both counts.

"I kind of feel bad for him now..." murmured Sofia. "Maybe he was just trying to help?"

Scourge's expression darkened. "I don't need help from someone who looks down on me like that. If it's someone like that Martia girl, who I can fight with side by side, then I'm fine with it," she said, as she turned back towards the remaining viruses, standing tall against them. Her lips didn't move as the private link read from her thoughts, while she gave her operator a glance from the side. "If he thinks I'm all that weak, then he can feel free to see me prove him wrong."

Finding herself at a loss for words at first, Sofia only nodded quickly with a determined face. "Okay. I'm with you."

A small sense of camaraderie came over Scourge as she displayed a brief smirk, before she turned her attention back towards the viruses. "Give me the CornShot and the Synapse... and the MachineGun, just to be sure," she said. Sofia's response was quick, and Scourge raised her hand against the far group of viruses towards the north before the chips had even fully loaded. A green swirl of energy began to encircle her wrist rapidly, before coalescing into a solenoid of energy in front of her palm. The energy ejected itself towards the Billy, and Scourge turned her attention down towards the Volgears at the foot of her Totem pole.

Its face was already about ready to breathe out its plume of fire yet again, but Scourge was ready to preempt it, loading up the Synapse into her systems. A small headache overtook her, as arcs of electricity crackled out from her temples, before leaping out from them as a singular white bolt, worth several million volts. Throughout this, she kept an eye out for any stragglers from the four viruses remaining, and didn't lower her arm just yet. The swirl of energy began to manifest itself once again around her wrist, but this time in a cluster of several smaller bandages rapidly encircling her hand--they would only be released once she found any more survivors.

Critias dodges as Scourge wraps herself in more linen and launched a bolt of green energy at the Billy. It misses the Billy but then explodes and sends a bolt at the Bunny. The Bunny was still so fascinated by the flower that it is tagged by the bolt and deleted.

Critias sends a sonic blast at the Volgears, but misses really badly. Scourge aims at them as the Billy retaliates, sending a Thunderball at Scourge. It strikes her true, and blows up most of her enhanced wrappings, shocking her code.

Critias dodges again as the first Volgear launches a line of fiery pillars at the navis. The ground underneath Critias collapses under his evasive movements and he is dumped into a hole as the fire passes over him. Scourge and her Totem get burned, stripping the navi of the last of her protective coating, and changing the Totem from its Fire Element burnating side, to its Wood Element healing side. Scourge retaliates with a electricity from her mind. Her mind storm electricutes both Volgears into deletion.

An amazing six out of nine small bandage shots connect against the Billy, deleting it.

With the viruses routed, the area turned into a peaceful zone once more--at least, that would be what normally would happen. Beneath Scourge's feet, the Totem slowly lowered itself into the ground, vanishing as she touched down on her own two feet. Once she came up to Critias, she stopped in front of him and crossed her arms, looking up at the tall bat-wyvern Navi. The wide, extremely forced smile she displayed before came up once again. This time, however, it seemed to exude a sense of smugness, rather than the annoyance she had displayed prior to the battle. "So, I did what you asked me to. Care to explain why you're so concerned about me that you're following me around?" she said, tilting her head slightly.
Critias quickly grabbed the ledge and pulled himself up after a cool handstand. "I've fixed the debuff problem." Yusaku informed his navi. "It was...harder than I thought." The man added, his navi's expresssion turning into a puzzled one. "Uh? Really? I thought you were an amazing programmer." The navi commented while stretching around. The numbness was gone indeed.

"I have only three fingers, Critias."

That explains it. "Right, right. The haptic suit..." Critias folded his hands together as best he could without hurting his wings. "...why did it have to look like me though..." he thought out loud. Then, all of a sudden, the navi's extremely sensitive ears twitched, catching Scourge's voice. Looking down, the immensa bat-wyvern found himself staring at a smug grin. Now very frustrated, the navi leaned to the small girl's eye. "Please..." he started, swiftly booping her forhead with his tail, this time with just wee bit more force. "Exuse me for being considerate." he dryly cut the conversation short. "Allow me to cater to your own request though."

Turning around, the tall wyvern walked deeper in the net at a slow pace.
Recoiling slightly from the tap on her nose, Scourge's wide smile quickly dissolved into confusion as she watched Critias simply walk away. Was he just going to walk away like that? Her operator had roughly the same reaction as she scratched her head. "What was that about?" said Sofia. Scourge watched the other Navi's back, until he disappeared from her sight. She exhaled, and mirrored her operator's confused head scratching.

"No idea," the one-eyed girl said, turning around to go in the opposite direction. "What a buzzkill; I was just getting fired up, too--hm?" Something by the side of the road caught her eye; a small sign showing a graphic of a NormalNavi and a horde of Metools. "Wrangler's Bounty Shop... now open in Netfrica Net," she recited off of the sign. Below it, the sign detailed something about hunting down virus hordes for profit, which led to a raised eyebrow from Scourge as she cradled her chin in her hand in thought.

"Hey, that looks interesting. Sounds like you can beat up some viruses, do some good, and get paid for it," said Sofia, who was also reading off of the sign from her screen. "It says there's a link to the shop nearby."

Scourge punched her palm with an excited grin. "Nice, that sounds right up my alley. I'll check it out," she said, walking off in the direction of the link to find a transfer pad, before disappearing in a beam of light.
