SINNBAD's Trials

Ding.

There was a chime on Destin's PET. This was followed by a flurry of typing. Followed by loading screens and another chime.

Ding.

Destin had spent a few minutes exchanging emails with a man named Soryu. Soryu was the Chip Shop owner. He had put up a holiday special. He asked for operators to send in a single chip, for another chip of greater value. Destin sent in his DoubleBomb and got something almost three times as lethal. He received a DoubleNeedle.

"SINN, I have just received a new chip from a trade. This should be useful in the coming battles."

SINNBAD barely gave a grunt as he plodded along.
It had been more than a few minutes as SINNBAD continued to skate along in ACDC Net. Destin was beginning to think that the current virus population in ACDC had been fully terminated. There had been a lot of traffic in ACDC Net as of late, so it was possible. As such he was busy pursuing the Chip Trader BBS in an effort to buy/sell. Unfortunately he had little money to trade with, and many people didn't want the chips he tried to sell. Thankfully someone was willing to sell a Sword battlechip for a good price. Though the act of buying the chip did deplete Destin's funds enough that he probably wouldn't have enough to buy upgrades for SINN anytime soon.
Alas, SINN wasn't going much anywhere at all with his walk, as he seemed to have wandered into something akin to a blank space in the ACDC network. It was quite possible, though, that this place was abandoned for a reason. After some time, SINN came across what looked like a very strange thing to be out in the middle of nowhere: a cart. The cart's tracks seemed to lead into an outcropping that looked like a dark cave of some sort.

...Yeeeeeaaaaah.

Cart: 250HP

Terrain: 85% Normal, 10% Tracks, 5% Missing (Cave entrance)

SINNBAD: 130HP
SINNBAD blinked as he came to a halt behind the cart. His head craned around as he scanned over the area he had stepped into. Another blank space. Was ACDC Net full of these blank spaces? Or, since these blank spaces always seemed to be accompanied by mining operations or irate malformed miners, that these widespread enterprises were removing all the datum and leaving 'holes' in the Net. If this was the case, ACDC Net would have to be patrolled a lot more in order to shut down these most likely illegal dredging exploitations.

SINNBAD reached out his hands and rapped on the cart, listening to the sound it made. He was testing to see if it was made of sturdy stuff. If it sounded like it was made of a solid metallic substance, he would know that the miners were at least well supplied. Most likely satisfied with what he heard, he placed his hands firmly on the edges, and pushed. If it moved he would jog a few feet to get the mining cart rolling and then jump in. It was time he rode a trolley.

Destin watched on.

Summary
1. SINNBAD pushes mining cart down tracks and gets in as they both disappear into the cave.
2. Float Shoes [NaviCust]: Disabled.
Having rolled the cart into the shaft entrance, SINN rode it boldly into the dark hole, where he was quickly greeted by a line of small lights to his sides, forming a rather small corridor for his cart to ride through. Didn't take long, however, for the cart to reach a spectacularly huge cavernous area, lit up by the same lights he saw earlier in the corridor. The tracks led straight through the middle of the cavern. Looking around, SINN saw that the cavern was populated by Miner viruses, chipping away at the cavern walls, mining for shiny green stuff.

In other words, green mystery data.

The scale of operation he saw was decidedly huge, with Miners everywhere he turned, all toiling away, hard at work at making their lives more meaningful. Explosions could be heard as the Miners also set down explosive mines to open up more potential for data mining. Seems that if he was to attack any of these viruses, he'd probably be dead faster than you can say, "Fire in the hole!". In any case, however, the cart was approaching a crossroads. Straight on, if he chose to do nothing, one of the tracks led to an gigantic unlit hole, exuding ominousness like it was going out of style. The other set of tracks, should he decide to turn right, led to a particularly heavily-populated section of the mine. Populated with Miners, of course.
SINNBAD quickly weighed his options as the cart rolled toward the intersection at a brisk speed. As he got within a few meters, he opted for the gigantic, ominous, unlit hole. His argument was sound, there were too many miners to fight, and riding into the midst of a large group of them would most likely end up bringing down the weight of the whole army upon him. His eyes lit up as strings of code scrawled across his vision, detailing every chip in his arsenal. He would need to be ready with that information when he descended into god-knows-what.

Summary
1. Float Shoes [NaviCust]: Disabled.
2. SINNBAD rides cart straight. Heading towards large, unlit hole.
Deciding to avoid the obvious dangers and go for the unknown, SINN rolled down in his cart, looking out for any dangers along the way. There could be heard some noise from behind him, most probably viral shouts from the Miners. However, it quickly died down, and the cart continued to roll on without fanfare. One welcome thing was that there were a few lanterns set up along the way, but they were a bit far-spaced from each other. Suddenly, SINN's auditory receptors picked up on some sort of noise, echoing throughout the large tunnel. A look around revealed nothing of interest, but then, the lantern just up ahead from his position was knocked down forcefully, sending a crashing sound from the breaking of glass reverberating through the tunnel.

It was too dark to tell, but SINNBAD probably had himself some unwanted company. A glimpse of a shadow seemed to be following his speeding cart, moving at incredible speed. It would be indicated that his stalker had a none-too-friendly viral signature...

???Virus: 200HP (Moving to right of cart)

-BATTLE FIVE, FIGHT?-
SINNBAD calmly brought up his Buster arm and leveled it upon the right side of the mining cart as it sped along. The click, clack of the spools on the track was quite audible as the sound reverberated off the tunnel walls. The sounds were joined in chorus by crashes, shatters, and heavy thudding footfalls. A virus of unknown size and capability was fast approaching the cart-riding SINN, knocking down things in its way, creating quite a clamor. The cart was moving at a brisk pace, but the creature was quite obviously sprinting to intercept, and seemed fast enough to do just that.

SINNBAD was festooned in darkness. He had been illuminated occasionally by the overhanging mining lanterns, spaced out across the ceiling above the track. However, they were spaced quite far apart, and so there were a few moments of bleakness between fonts of flame. SINN was not concerned with the periods of shadow, as they were short. But that soon changed when a flame was snuffed out and the black enveloped him fully for longer than a moment.

And so he aimed as best he could over the side of the mining cart at the unknown virus, as both shuffled along. It was hard to pinpoint exactly where the virus was at any given point. But then there was a detectable snap as a flicker of sparks kindled away from the barrel. A great gout of roaring flame leaped from SINN's Buster and torched the surrounding area moments later. The blaze consumed the starboard side of the tunnel as SINNBAD rolled onwards, roasting all that stood before it. The great blaze would leave left behind whimpering, charred soil.

Immediately following the show of infernal might, SINN turned his left hand off its duty, staying his right, and pointed his palm behind the cart he was riding in. The air wavered in front of his hand, seemingly collecting semi-invisible particles together. Then suddenly a wave of force shot forth to catapult the cart and its rider further along the tracks toward the light. SINNBAD did not want to fight in darkness. He could not see in darkness.

As he descended deeper into the mine, SINN began weaving his hands at the walls ahead of him. His hands pushed and pulled at something invisible. It was only moments later that something did happen that was visible. The raw datum being mined here began to bleed off from the tunnel walls in ropes-like strands, snaking out toward SINN as the cart jostled along. SINN began collecting the cords upon reaching them, absorbing them into his body through his hands. It was strange to behold, SINN sucking up noodles with his hands as he sat in a speeding cart.

There wasn't much space between the cart and SINN's enemy, so the burning shot he took hit dead-on. It seemed relatively unharmed, however, as it sped forward in a great dash. Suddenly, as it passed through the area lit by a lantern, it disappeared off into a hazy mist. Strangely enough, however, the little glimmer of light, even though it was brighter than the darkness it had just left, revealed nothing about the virus: it seemed to be nothing but shadows. SINN then entered the lit area, speeding away with his mining cart, seemingly relieved of the mad little virus.

However, a closer look forward would reveal that the monster wasn't giving up on its prey just yet...

Nothing.

The virus vanished into nothing as it passed through the lantern light. Was it all an illusion? A trick of the mind and shadow? Perhaps there was a slight earthquake which caused a lantern to fall and shatter. Perhaps there was nothing to worry about, here in the dark.

SINNBAD turned to face the front again. His eyes caught a figure down the track a ways. So perhaps he wasn't seeing things. But if that was the case, then the speed of the creature was unreal. Or perhaps it jumped from shadow to shadow, like some sort of ghost. It would be quite a problem trying to fight something like that down here in the mine.

Regardless, the virus was tearing up the tracks in front of him. SINN would not stand idle and watch himself get derailed. He raised his left hand, and pointed it behind him. Another pulse of energy behind the cart propelled it forward with even greater velocity. The 'wind' whipped by his face as he sped along down the tracks toward the virus. He held fast to the sides of the cart as he flew, the loose straps of his armor flapping excitedly. SINN had set himself on a collision course with the virus, at speeds that were quite unreal.

Within moments he would collide with the virus, had it stayed anywhere near the tracks. The Guard1 battlechip data formed in SINN's mind and his body began to glow faintly with the collected power. The datum began to entangle itself around him just before he would strike. If he was thrown from the cart by the impact, he would activate the Guard1, protecting himself from the rather nasty battering he would get from the fall. Or he could use it if he was in danger from the cart, or the potential derailing... It was all up to fate now as he hardened himself to the next moments.

Bracing himself for impact, SINN abandoned the safety of the speeding cart, and instead opted to save himself by using a Guard. The Navi's vehicle quickly approached the break in the tracks that the shadow virus had made, which sent it tumbling off into the darkness. SINN, meanwhile, was saved by his Metool-driven shield, but now he had a different problem. The shadow virus now took the form of a rabid dog of sorts, but still immaterial. It leapt towards the lantern in the area and knocked it down quickly, plunging the world into darkness. A small smidgen of light on either side of the tunnel indicated that there were still lanterns in the tunnel, just really, really far away.

...Makes you wish you'd stayed on the cart, no?

Cart: WHOMP OFF TO NOWHERE LOL
SINNBAD abandons the mining cart as it careens toward the shadowed virus, jumping earlier than intended. In fact he didn't even plan on jumping out of the cart unless it derailed, such as hitting the virus or flying off the tracks. However, some mysterious force caused him to leap from the speeding cart moments before it... kept on rolling. It seemed that the space of broken track was just a slight bump on the road; as the cart continued onward into the distance, unphased.

SINN conjured a shield of golden light as he completed the arc of his short hop and began to fall toward the ground. He ended up landing on the ground, softly, sliding across the soil like water. This was due to the shield, which was underneath his feet, acting like a surfboard. SINN bounced upon the initial impact with the ground. But he bended his knees and brought himself close to the board. So he managed to keep his balance as he 'surfed' to a stop. The shield dissipated upon reaching a stop, seeping into the soil, probably ending up messing with the ground water. Some ecology nut would give the navi an earful later.

Immediately upon SINNBAD's boots hitting the ground, the dirt around SINN dispersed in a tiny dust devil, radiating outward from the navi's feet. SINN rose up about a foot off the ground, almost bringing himself to the height he had while riding the cart. He extended his Buster out to point toward the beastly virus in the darkness. At least, as well as he could given the circumstances. His hand retracted as he readied his weapon for battle.

Datum covered his eyes, lighting them up like two bleary torches. Letters and numbers scrolled across his vision like trains, coming and going at all times of the day, on many different tracks. Within moments of the start of the confusion, the chaos stopped. His eyes returned to normal, and the world re-encapsulated in pitch once more. Hiding both the virus and the navi dimly in its veil.

The world flared to life suddenly, parting the bleakness that had formed once more. A shining blade had appeared without warning, sticking straight out of SINNBAD's Buster. The sword was the size of a broadsword, approximately three feet of blade that was about three inches wide. It was a straight sabre made for cutting, but capable of thrusting like a straight sword. However the sword was not really designed for that purpose.

The sword waved about a few times as SINN tested its weight, making feint humming sounds as it sliced through the air. When he was satisfied, SINN turned his attention to the shadow creature, obscured by the shadows. SINN's blade cocked at an angle as he pulled it back toward his side, ready to slash it through the air at a moments notice. His feet shifted in the air just slightly. He was getting ready to dodge the virus' initial charge. His counterattack, a cleaving cut across the creature's side as it sped past, would show it the error of its challenge. Assuming he could see it coming...

SINNBAD's sword glowed in the darkness of the mining tunnel as he readied himself for a counterattack. The shadowy virus seemed repulsed by the light emitted by the energy blade, and sought to destroy the source. And its wielder, too, for good measure. Lunging at the Navi, the shadow took one, two, three stabs, two of which were easily dodged, but one not. (40) It got a taste of delicious sharp sword as SINN made his counter, causing the virus to shriek in an unnatural pitch that made his processes shake.

It then proceeded to leap off in retreat to lick its wounds... but it would be back, judging by the viral signature's presence still hovering around in the tunnel. However, the virus now had the advantage of the element of surprise... he'd have to be extra-careful.

SINNBAD held his sword up as the light began to twist and falter. The shadow beast had retreated to lick its wounds and prepare itself for another attack. Tendrils of murky obscurity slowly crept from all around SINN, curling around him like a mass of black snakes. The navi became clouded in his own shadows. However, once more the brightness of his blade drove back the encroaching darkness. The warrior was illuminated again, held in a halo of radiance.

SINN shifted his body from side to side slowly, drawing trails with his feet, kicking up tiny clouds of dust. He weaved himself an invisible protective sphere of awareness, ready at a moments notice if the air around him was disturbed. He brought up his blade for another strike. He waited patiently for the enemy to come to him. He would cut a strong gash into the side of his foe if it was foolish enough to attack him.

After dealing with its own problems, the virus began to circle around SINN, trying to find an opening for attack. The Navi watched his surroundings closely, ready for a quick counterattack. A showdown between exterminator and pest. Then, the virus made a feint towards SINN's side, but then dashed off to his back to deliver a slash! SINN barely managed to escape being mauled as he cut another gash in the shadowy body of his prey, causing it to howl in pain once more. Desperate for retaliation, the beast lunged its body at the Navi anyway and dug its... er, teeth, or whatever sharp thing it had, into his arm! (40)

Pain.

SINNBAD flinched.

Intense pain.

SINN's Buster arm was bleeding cloudy datum as a pair of huge jowls clamped down upon it. The beast had SINN in its grasp, in its massive maw. Rows of razor sharp teeth pinned SINN down, it took him almost all his strength to hold fast against the virus. The glow of the sword cast a sickly light on the whole dreadful scene. Both SINN and the virus bared their teeth for one reason or another, but it was clear that in each toothy grin, there was a deep hatred for each other.

SINNBAD's sword arm was disabled while in the mouth of the virus. Gritting his teeth and forcing his other hand to move, he placed his palm near the virus' face. SINN's eyes grew dark and cold, like the shadows that played off the two combatants in the flickering, ghostly illumination. Their usual vibrant glow gave way to sickening blackness, enveloping his vision as if his retinas were burned out of their sockets. His eyes becoming like two lumps of coal in his head. The outsides suddenly began to slowly bleed out, as if he were possessed, or extremely ill.

Tendrils of force sprouted like vines from his upper arm, winding and twisting their way down in a most unholy manner. It was as if SINN was sprouting roots, rotting from the inside out while he was still alive. The bleeding, smoking energy traveled down his arm to his hand, poised close to the enemy. There it collected, forming a blazing ichor of darkness, an aura of damnation. SINNBAD's voice came through then, graveled and echoing, as if a choir of monks were singing in a storm.

"That was your last move."

BANG!

Having a virus bite into your arm is not a very pleasant experience, as SINN discovered. Angered by this sudden turn of events, SINN fires off a few rounds at the virus with his buster...

...only to have the whole lot absorbed by the body (or lack of one?) of the virus. It was very similar to the results of the burst of flame he had thrown at the virus earlier. No visible effects. The beast continued to chomp down on delicious arm, but it seemed to have lost its gusto from earlier, only dealing a bit of damage. (10)

Bright blasts of energy, swirling with strings of raw datum, slammed into the virus. The shots streamed and belted the beast, shelling it with dozens of bolts, shredding its form. However, the immaterial nature of the virus caused it to receive no damage. The blaze of shells and spears passed right through the monster as if it was made of the very shadow that encompassed the tunnel. Needless to say, if SINNBAD wasn't distracted, he would feel quite unmanned by his inability to kill his opponent with that massive display of firepower.

SINNBAD howled as he was gnawed upon by the shadowed virus some more. The jagged teeth raked across his bloodied arm, spurting a few tiny gouts of gray datum. SINNBAD was unable to bring his sword to bare against the virus as it held his arm fast. Reflexively, SINNBAD reached out and tore the battlechip support from Destin's PET. SINN's eyes bled twin rivers of obsidian ichor as his left hand twisted and contorted.

SINNBAD's hand cracked and mutated. The digital bones snapping as they elongated and caused his hand to expand. His gauntlet covered fingers' grew taught and sharpened, changing composition to something not made of flesh and leather. Shining blades taloned from his hand ready to rend. Which he then thrusted, claws gleaming, into the shadowed beast... again, and again, and again.

Again and again did SINN hack away at the viral threat on his arm, making sure that it was dead. Once all of its HP integrity was lost, it dropped to the floor, lifeless, writhing as it changed into junk data. The data congealed into battlechip form, and became inactive.

Okay, now he was safe from the threat of the dreaded shadow beast. Now what? His cart went off to nowhere, and God knows where he was under the ACDC network. For all he knew, he might even have crossed into another network. However, he wasn't in the dark any longer, as his energy sword emitted its cool blue light on the tunnel's interior. Perhaps a look around would be productive?
The shadows part at the dim light of his sword. SINNBAD breathed heavily as he collapsed to the ground. He continued to pant as he wobbled to his feet moments later, holding his left hand on his mangled right.

Destin had received a lot of static since SINN started, probably due to the tunnels. However the deletion of the virus had cleared it up. But the dim illumination left in its wake made it hard to watch over his navi.

He pulled up the status screen and noticed he was at a third of his capability. Slotting in his last MiniEnergyPack, he brought the navi back to fighting status. Destin didn't know what to do at this point, as SINNBAD was deep in tunnels unfamiliar.

"As long as we are here, we may as well do some reconnaissance."

SINNBAD began to heal as the healing datum repaired his arm. His stance became more solid as his wobbling slowed. He raised his right arm as his sword stayed lit, using it as a torch as he tried to figure out which direction he was pointing.

Eventually he picked a direction, one that was probably the one he came from, and followed the tracks toward who knows what. The Rageclaw1 fades. The Sword does not.

Summary
1. MiniEnergyPack [Subchip]: Heal 50 HP to SINNBAD.

SINNBAD is now at 90 HP.
