Healbot 2: Heal Harder

The BMD would begin to unfold as soon as Eternalis willed it open, inside the wet and slippery BMD was a bit of chip data, a bigger, badder version of the standard Blizzard chip available in the normal nets.

"What is with these ice chips in the middle of Hades?" muttered Harke in puzzlement as the chip data appeared on his display. Scratching his head, he shrugged as he swapped out one of his original chips to place it into his current folder. "Well, it's a good chip regardless, but I'm still really confused. Maybe that Prog's been transporting more than just you two. I assume you guys are going on until you're satisfied?"

"Yeah, I'm not nearly tired yet. These arms were made for busting!" said Eternalis, attempting to lift his gooey arms to show off, though it only resulted in him looking rather silly. Harke rolled his eyes with a tired grin on his face, while Aurora giggled in amusement as she set off on her own. Eternalis was left with mixed feelings as he jogged up to her to explore further in. "Hey, wait, c'mon, don't leave me out in the cold like that!"

The crashing and crunching noises continued to grow in loudness as the two of them continued to go through the network, soft sand below their feet as they scoped out the field ahead of them as Furnace, Metal and Lava ahead of them, the metal panels half melted from the lava against it and the sand hot and arid from the Furnace ahead of them. Two Zemons ahead of them on the Furnace, alongside an OldHeater, the latter battered, beaten and all around, even half melted on the left side. A Whomper2 hanging from the non-existent ceiling, dangling from a string that had caught fire. A red spotted egg with four holes, two on each side, showing a scaly leg on each side, tail wagging slowly as two beady eyes stared at Eternalis and friend from inside the egg. and finally a Fullfire hopping around worridly as it had no cover for it to hide out in, worried it would be the first target of Eternalis' rage.

LizeggLizegg (Cregg)

The Cregg version is a brown scaly egg with red spots. Most notably, it possesses a long gray tail that extends from a crack in the egg's rear, which is constantly on fire. It moves around by emitting flames from cracks in the scaly shell, trying to hit an enemy. The Lizegg is the same, but grows four gray scaly legs and feet that pop out of the egg and two holes at the front for two shining yellow eyes. It retains the tail from its weaker form, though the flames are a bit more intense. The egg grows slightly. Its scales also become stronger which allows it to pop back in for a defensive action. The Raptegg's hind legs grow more so it can stand on them. Its head, similar to that of a raptor but gray, pops out of the egg too and a long gray scaly tail that moves behind him frantically, which is covered in roaring fire. The egg grows slightly again. Same as the Lizegg, it can also pop everything back in for a defensive action, though it is better than its lower version at this.

For all of the background noise befitting the network based on a volcanic island, the silence between the two network spelunkers was surprisingly protracted. However, judging from the cheerful humming coming from Aurora's end, it likely wasn't due to the awkwardness that had plagued them during their trek through the Sharo network. Still, one thing did bother Eternalis slightly as he jogged to catch up to Aurora's side. "Aurora?"

Aurora briefly halted her humming for a moment. "Mm?"

"You mentioned something earlier in that BBS thread about your past life, right?"

"Ah, right. I kind of did want to bring it up at some point but there really hadn't been any good opportunities. Sorry," said Aurora, averting her eyes as she started to look at some far-off lava flow. A dry chuckle escaped her lips. "It's a little hard to just bring it up out of nowhere when it's the reason I was put in deep freeze, you know?"

"What exactly happened? I figure Karen's your old operator, judging from how she talks about you so much?" piped in Harke.

"No, actually, it was Serena," said Aurora. The name caused Harke's heart to sink-- it was his mother's name. "Can't imagine a better operator. May she rest in peace... Actually, Harke, how much do you know about her job?"

Tilting his head, the operator tried to dig through his memories. "Mmm... I think Dad told me a long time ago she did some kind of military work. Didn't say much else."

"I see... Well, you can somewhat figure out what my line of work was from my camouflage unit. I wasn't her main Navi, but I was more involved in... logistics, let's say that. Her main Navi was... mmh, my old partner."

Eternalis' interest peaked slightly. "Oh, what was your partner like?"

"Well, he--" started Aurora, before she abruptly stopped walking. A brief double beep preceded the appearance of a small window in her peripheral vision, with some text rapidly scrolling across its height. It was evident that she wouldn't be quite able to finish her story, with the viruses appearing one after another in front of them. The statistic window mirrored itself in front of Eternalis after processing it for brevity.

"I guess we're saving story time for later," said Harke, as he loaded up the more frequently-used chips. "There you go, anything extra?"

Aurora nodded. "Triggering the Boiler with the new Blizzard should work for the Zemon." The fairer half of the pair wasted no time in utilizing what had been given to her. Behind her, the red Tromby virus twirled in place as it was summoned, its headphones flying in the air before neatly landing back on its head. After its fancy arrival, it wasted no time in playing the song of its people, filling the area with a soothing jazz number.

"Give me the WideShot too," added Eternalis. The screen in front of his face lit up with crosshairs as he started his own offense, with cracks forming beneath the volatile earth. Steam hissed out violently before geysers sprayed out wildly beneath three of the viruses. In the chaos, he drew back slightly and raised his right arm, which began to swirl about into an arm cannon. The cannon bulged at its base before it erupted with a slimy LittleBoiler payload. The blob of goo landed with a splat on the heat-baked dirt, followed by a second blast. The second round was much more short-range, but its contents was akin to that of a shotgun's buckshot, spraying high-velocity goo everywhere. Where the goo landed, an unnatural frost began to form, until the area in front of Eternalis was covered in sheet ice.

As the Boiler would be erupting soon, he then joined hands with Aurora, who had already started up her camouflage, and warped out of sight. If one were to scan the area, they would see the two reappearing high in the air, roughly above the battered-looking furnace virus. With the advantage of the element of surprise, Eternalis released his last attack from his cannon, blasting out a blade made of water straight down towards his last target.

With their careful discussion of past difficulties being rudely cut short, aurora and Eternalis quickly discussed a strategy and got right to work. Their first effort was to lock down all of their prospective targets from moving, and as the smooth jazz spread across the scorching field, small crackles of restraining energy began to spread through each of the viruses — even the Whomper as it whisked up its string out of sight, and the FullFire that tried to shield its ears as it dodged behind the Old heater, finding no other suitable cover. It would be a moment before they were all locked down properly, but Aurora could rest assured that her tactic had taken root.

In the mean-time, the egg-creature rushed forward, spraying gouts of forceful fire from the many cracks in its shell; it made for Eternalis, but stumbled part way as it transitioned from the lava pool onto the softer sand, and didn't manage to scorch him at all. The aqua navi's answer was equally forceful as he raised a line of geysers from the ground: the Whomper had zipped away out of range, but lining up the egg nearby, and the FullFire a little further off also let him catch the heater as well, while the caster virus hid behind it. The first pulse of water jets vaporised the egg virus instantly, though none of the initial water bursts struck the other two. The second, however, even though it wasn't quite as strong, successfully nailed both viruses and thoroughly quenched them both, creating a localised cloud of vaporised steam that hung in the air where they had been.

Occupied as he was with this deletion, the two Zemon took a chance, each warping suddenly to positions next to Eternalis and Aurora one after the other. The first, opened with a broad sweep of its blade aimed to slice both of the explorers, though he only managed to connect with Eternalis, missing Aurora. It followed with a second stab that drove inwards, piercing through the slime navi more directly. This left it struggling to free its blade for a moment, which Eternalis might or might not find amusing, depending on how he felt about having just been stabbed. The second virus warped in closer to Aurora, lining up to drive a long stab that Aurora dodged and Eternalis most distinctly did not, before following it with a slice that missed Aurora. As if attempting to capitalise on the surprise, the Whomper dropped down again into a gap nearby, lined up to blow its cone of fire over the two navis without clipping either Zemon in the process; they both took a nasty fire wash, though Aurora seemed to be suffering the worse for the damage at the moment.

The sand beneath them crystalised and hardened into solid glass, red hot to the touch, then melted further, into even more lava, but the pair didn't plan on sticking around long. Eternalis threw down a parting gift between the two sword-wielding viruses, then backed off just enough to blast them, and the volatile blob, with an icy cone of more freezing cold goop. The turf war continued as the recently lava-changed panels were now converted into ice instead, and the cone froze one of the Zemon solid. The other escaped harm, and the Whomper was just a hair too far away for the short-range cone to hit it, but most importantly, the boiler blob began to react in a very volatile manner.

That was, of course, the cue for them both to leave and Eternalis got them both clear of the blast zone with a quick teleportation, while aurora went stealth to help save herself from any further damage. The two Zemon looked about, taking a moment to find out where their quarry had gone, and when they found Eternalis they began to move towards him for another round. Unfortunately, they weren't quick enough to get out of range as the boiler detonated with a tremendous, explosive thump of impact. The remaining three viruses were scourged from the net in an instant, leaving the two navis alone again and with a moment to catch their breaths.

Once again, it seemed that victory was theirs, and the spoils remained for the claiming; amongst the zenny and other miscellaneous data fragments, one of the zemon's weapons had remained quite fortunately intact, and could easily be resolved into reusable chip data.

As the Hades busting duo landed gingerly onto the ground from their final attack, they surveyed the area, satisfied with the complete purge. "Ugh, that smarts," said Aurora, holding a hand to her side where the Whomper's fiery breath had grazed her. The suit's consistency on her flank fluctuated oddly as it shifted from flesh to slime, and then back again. It didn't help matters that the transition from arctic temperatures to hellfire was still quite jarring.

Eternalis picked up a nearby Zemon sword, allowing it to disappear as it was transferred into battlechip data, and turned to Aurora. "You all right? I'll patch that up for you," he said, producing a patch of blue slime from his hand. Aurora raised her eyebrow, taking the patch from her partner and holding it up questioningly.

"I guess I just put this on like a band-aid?" said Aurora.
"However you want to put it on," shrugged Eternalis.

Without much else to go on, Aurora applied the patch. The slime absorbed itself into her side, and her body visibly relaxed. "That's better," she sighed, feeling the effects of the healing already taking effect. Eternalis grinned as Aurora stretched a bit, before turning around to start off the exploration once more.

"C'mon, I still haven't finished my story."

After all the incredible changing-terrain battlefield of the last fight, Eternalis and Aurora came upon a barren plain of normal tiles. Spread out in front of the two was a literal horde of viruses of various types. A brown scaly egg with red spots, four gray scaly legs and feet that pop out of the egg, and two holes at the front for two shining yellow eyes started off the group. A guy in a bandana holding a heavy iron ball, a flying head wrapped in a fiery aura, two guys holding beeping explosive mines, a giant mole, and a large red stone golem.

It was going to be a strange fight.

Drop attacks, Bomb attacks (which fall out of the air after being thrown), and Ground attacks damage them in this state. Other attacks executed from a high angle/altitude also work. All movements performed by a Momogra are considered a dodge, as they occur underground, and out of sight. Momogras only attack in response to having an attack launched in their direction, and only if they have an action remaining for that turn. Momogras attack by instantly tunneling to the panel behind the enemy, popping out of the ground, and striking with a shovel. A Momogra is completely vulnerable to any form of attack during its own atack, and until it moves again following that attack. The movement prior to the attack does not require an action, but movement afterwards does. The attack cannot execute if the panel behind the target is a liquid terrain type, Metal, Broken, or Missing. The attack also will not execute if there is something currently occupying the panel they would be attacking from. If the attack cannot execute, the Momogra will not move. In the case of Glass and Cracked terrain, the Momogras will still attempt to attack, but suffer the consequences of doing do as those panels will break and damage the Momogra, also causing the attack to fail. Momogra get 1 free movement per turn at the start of the turn before their first action.

MetalCraggerMetalCragger (Cragger)

Craggers are pretty easy targets, given their size. They also move very rarely, and when they do they move slowly. Their dodge rate is abysmal. They generally rely on their HardBody defense, which reduces non-break damage by half, but doubles break damage. They have high attack power and AoE, but their accuracy is generally bad as their attacks are easy to follow and take time to deliver. Their attack is executed as a Drop Attack, and thus attacks from above, and not head-on. Targets caught underground within this attack's AoE range take an additional 50 Null damage that ignores all defenses.

"Seems like this part of the area's fairly clear from the lava."
"Almost makes it seem like some kind of park."

Moving further through the area, the two stumbled upon what appeared to be a rather benign area of cooled lava-base soil. The black soil seemed to spread out for a good while, a welcome respite from the volatile explosions of the island's network. Eternalis walked side-by-side with Aurora as the recovery patch restored the damage done by the earlier burst of fire. With the patch in full force, it was easy enough for Aurora to move about unabated, and even add a small spring to her step as she reminisced.

"Hm... Alright, where were we? Right, my old partner. So he was Serena's old Navi, employed for Sharo's 'internal logistics', with me as support. The job wasn't easy, but it was decent enough. We had a bunch of slip-ups, him and me both, but we always managed to pull each other out of it somehow. Of course, that is, until we didn't," said Aurora, looking off into the smoke-filled skies with a wistful air. "Serena brought in a new upgrade one day, told us that it was some kind of new 'detection system' for him. Our work tended to be a bit on the secretive side, we had to do some 'permanent removal' a few times on witnesses. Still, it's never at all possible to catch every witness, and the cleanup work after those kinds of incidents nearly got both of us 'removed' ourselves by the higher-ups. That upgrade was supposed to... eliminate that problem. Essentially, it detected any attempt at resolving his identity data as a hostile threat. If the data wasn't scrambled in time, it immediately boosted his statistics in order to intercept the data and eliminate the threat."

Aurora cleared her throat. "Basically, if you managed to look at his face, it turned him into a cruise missile."

Harke's expression turned into an incredulous confusion. "W-What? But won't that just delete everything in sight?"

"His internal code normally had an execute-permission setup that didn't allow him to access any network that wasn't thoroughly checked and authorized for, and the upgrade itself had an extensive whitelist. Like I said, we were involved in internal logistics, not external, so the area we were operating in was tiny. But, well..." Aurora hesitated, clutching at her chest with a pained expression.

"Aurora..."

Eternalis had a similarly pained expression on his face, though likely more out of concern than painful memories. He hesitantly reached out for her shoulder, but before he could do so, a loud thump demanded their attention. As they had been walking about, it seemed like a horde of viruses had materialized out of thin air.

Jettisoned out of her reminiscing time, Aurora shook her head to clear it, and sighed. "These viruses really don't know how to read the mood, it seems."

"No kidding. You guys sure you don't want to do this in the PET or anything?" said Harke. "Well, here's the usual. Anything else? AquaTower looks decent here." A set of four chips inserted itself as the operator gave the command through his floating touchscreen.

"Yeah, that and MediumCloud. I'll wipe 'em out nice and easy," said Eternalis, readying himself as the chips came into their processing queues.

Aurora had already put her hand forward, activating the first of the chips. The familiar red Trumpy floated into existence in front of her. It let out a few viral toots before it set to work on playing its melody, this time going for a powerfully patriotic rendition of the Sharo anthem. While Aurora's summoned virus set to loudly extolling the virtues of the military nation, Eternalis summoned his own little helper, with the KillerEye virus hopping in with a cheerful beep of its own as it scouted forward for intruders.

He then held back his arm, gathering a small blob of slime in his hand before pitching it hard towards the viruses. The blob landed with a wet smack and sprouted a pair of iridescent blue eyes, looking around with wonderment at its surroundings. Unfortunately, it wouldn't have much of a time to appreciate them as the ground beneath it crackled open and a powerful geyser shot forth, slicing apart anything caught in its path.

The Sharoan duo then blinked out of the way before the Little Boiler could do its work, with Eternalis reappearing high above the sky. As they hovered briefly, the ground rumbled loudly, and another geyser appeared to wreak havoc on the viral ranks. This one covered a much larger area than the previous one, but its spread was also much slower. Observing the battlefield from high above, Eternalis waved his arm to separate a part of it from him. The separated blob halted in midair before it turned a murky grey and expelling a stormy rain towards the enemies below.

Taking a quick chance to patch themselves up (+72 to Aurora, +18 to Eternalis), the duo got to work, Aroura summoning the ever so wonderful Timpani, it's low brown note inducing note immediately held all the viruses to the ground without a second thought (To-All Hold). Each virus roaring in anger at the duo as they did everything they could to avoid whatever they could. The MetalCragger, unable to escape, took the attack from the Sensor without a second thought, but it's bulk made the attack do less than satisfactory damage (-50, Stun1) as Aurora immediately went undercover, cloaking herself from any sense of possible sight. The two Miner viruses quickly began to summon up mines, disappearing underground for a brief moment, laying down their mines all over the field (+10% Mined field).

The Megalian-F2 shooting it's head at the Timpani that was summoned and tried to crash through it, just -barely- missing to the side as the Breaker tried to hop up into the air, but firmly rooted to the ground, was unable to attack for the brief moment the Timpani was on the field. But as soon as the kettle was thrown onto the field, the MetalCragger smashed it's fist onto the ground as it stood motionless for the moment, the fist smashing into the Kettle with little difficulty, cracking everything to the sides of it and heavily damaging the weapon (90+Break, 10% Cracked Field)...but then, exploding all around the viruses that it surrounded (205 Aqua+Blast3), everything but the Momogoro and Cragger was immediately deleted by the scalding water of the attack, leaving little more than a scalded field all around where the kettle existed, the Cragger just barely alive by the virtue of it's HardBody (105). The Momogoro popping it's head up to see that it and the Cragger were the only things alive and soon enough, they weren't. With the WaterLine attack would finish off the fight quickly enough, neither virus able to move out of the way and were subsequently erased from existence. Afterwards, only a pile of (very wet) zenny could be gathered up, as well as what looked to be some sort of GIANT ROCK FIST. Maybe Eternalis could convert it to chip data?

"Phew..." muttered Eternalis, landing on the ground as the last of the viruses was wiped out cleanly. One of the giant rocky fists still remained on the field, but not for long, as it warped up into the PET to be printed out into battlechip data. Beside him, Aurora's body shimmered back into visibility. The SP wiped her forehead as she scouted the surroundings, which seemed rather barren now. The story she had been telling echoed inside her mind, but the sudden shift into battle mode had tired her out.

"Maybe Harke's right, let's just take this to the PET. I think that mood whiplash took all the energy out of me," she sighed.
"Good idea. I think we've had enough busting for the day... Harke?"
"I was wondering how long you guys were going to last... Sure, let's get out of here and I can take a walk or something."

With all of them in agreement, the two raised their fists into a quick bump before warping out of the fiery area.
