In Her Element

"Oh, you woke up," said Scarlet, as she walked back through the entrance hall, with a small plastic pack on a tray in her hands. She placed the tray onto the bedside table, and scooted next to Luke on the bed.

The man scratched his head groggily, and his eyes lingered over to the table. "What'd they get you? Doesn't look like French toast and coffee to me."

"Order it yourself if you want some!" laughed Scarlet. "And they accidentally forgot to send in a few more of the upgrades, apparently; I didn't even notice." She was about to continue, but a brief ping on her PET turned her attention to her screen. The earlier errors had cleaned themselves up, and a large "DATA ONLY - LINK STANDBY" text window was hovering before her. "Oh, the link's back up." Hastily going back into position, she began the work of reestablishing all the usual audiovisuals. "Terra, are you there? The link was severed."

"Scarlet!" "... Scarlet." The two girls responded in a somewhat disjointed fashion, but it was clear that they were both quite happy to see her. The reunion was halted rather abruptly, however, as the enormous bug rushed headlong back into the fray, and smashed into their readied defenses with a few frenzied attacks. While her SP worked to defend against the towering insect, Terra stumbled upon the flashing cube, which seemed to help them incapacitate the insect somewhat.

"Oh! Good job," said Scarlet, raising her eyebrows in surprise. It looked like they were fending for themselves rather well, even without her help.

"Alright!" cheered Carbide. However, her celebration was short-lived, as their enormous enemy then loomed over them, in order to try to bypass her stalwart defense. "Terra! Watch out!" she yelled, as she leapt in the way of the insect's stinger. It lanced its payload into her shoulder before Terra could react, locking up her body almost immediately as she convulsed on the floor.

"... Scarlet!"

"Hang on, you two!" said Scarlet, her fingers dancing across the holographic screen to send a few battlechips to her Navi. While she did so, however, the insect wasn't about to let up, and threw up its acrid poison at her. While her armor was enough to protect her from its corrosive touch, her clothes didn't seem to agree with it all too well, as some of her leotard began to seethe away around her flank and midriff. The armor was quick to restore itself, along with the usual protective barrier around Carbide. Terra herself, however, seized up slightly from the poisonous gas that was emitted, but was much quicker to recover than her SP. Scarlet's assistance came along not too long after, with a wireframe of a large candle appearing right above the black cube that had just fired the beam earlier. After it materialized, it fell onto the cube with a quiet thump, and began to restore some of their wounds.

Scarlet pumped her fist high. "Show that bug who's boss!" she cheered, as the second chip came in. Terra stomped on the ground in front of her, causing a large chunk of the earth to fly up in front of her. With a quick spin, she then kicked the clod of earth towards their enemy, which would ideally smack it in the face, hit the wall on the other side, and roll back towards the bug for a double hit. She was about to reach for Carbide, when the SP yelled out, "N-No! I'm fine! J... Just... let... me... do this!" Carbide roared as she struggled to move, against the will of her own body, while Terra could only watch out for her, as well as avoid any potential retaliation from the bug.

With her operator back but Carbide downed, Terra was left to face the bug as it reared and screeched in a state of unnervingly absolute silence. Even so, she restored some of her own defences and gave her temporarily incapacitated SP some extra protection as well. fortunately for the smaller program, as she struggled to will her body out of its toxin-induced torpor, the queen bug seemed to have disregarded her for the time being, focused solely on the threat that was still on her feet.

The candle landed on the darkened face of the cub and rested there with a solid immobility, beginning to pulse soothing warmth to both of them, and while it didn't immediately help Carbide shake off her paralysis, the extra boost was likely appreciated all the same. Terra had the benefit of the grass beneath her feet as well, and moved nimbly with her opponent as the bug twitched back and forth, bleeding onto the ground everywhere as it circled her in turn. The toxic blood corrupted more for the grass steadily as it moved, and a small jet from some ruptured blood vessel or other sprayed over Carbide's struggling form, but the barrier that Terra had provided stopped it from burning her.

After a few moments of lining each other up, the creature struck first, darting across the gap in eerie silence as it lashed out at her with its dripping mandibles, slashing ans swiping. Terra kept up with it easily to begin with, deftly avoiding its bites and claws, but the relentless fury came on, and she couldn't keep herself away from all of them. As the bug crawled directly over the top of Carbide's prone form, ignoring it while it focused on Terra, it managed to land a strong bite that crushed through her earthen armour in one bite. Unharmed, Terra responded, kicking a heavy chunk of earth back at the beast. Despite the difficulty of aiming such a move, Terra's assault was precise and accurate. Unfortunately the queen was equally nimble and slithered around and under it with an eye-bending flexibility. The sudden move left it reared directly over Terra, and a moment later she felt a small, sharp sting somewhere in the small of her back.

Its tail had curled around behind as it loomed over her, and a second, smaller stinger just below the first had managed to sneak in and nick her flesh. It didn't really hurt at all, for Terra, but there was a faint feeling of being drawn, like the needle was sucking as well, and then her eyes grew heavy and the world blurred. A toxic lethargy spread through her body and staying awake became a test of willpower that swiftly overtook the earth navi.

Not far away, Carbide managed to fight her way through her own sting-induced paralysis; the poison land beneath her had drained away the remainder of her defence moments after it had blocked the foul spray, but in her struggles she had at least managed to get out of the poison before it hurt her. She was able to get control of her limbs properly just in time to see her navi crumple, rather gracefully, to the ground while the massive insect reared above her, then curled down to scoop her up in a collection of its many smaller arms.

"Grrrrrgh... Aaaaargh!" roared Carbide as she slowly dug her fingers through the soil, breaking through the vice grip of the Corpus's paralyzing venom. While the poisonous blood had flooded all around her, she barely managed to roll off to the side and force herself upright. Her breathing strained, Carbide struggled to keep herself standing, and could feel her body being soaked by sweat from the exertion of fighting the venom. She choked down some bile as the spires on her arm expanded once again to form a spiked tower shield. Her sight was an indistinct blur, but as she caught her breath, she could see that there was one particularly green thing floating in midair in front of her. However, she didn't need the help of her eyes to know that it was Terra, and by the looks of things, she wasn't doing too well.

"Terra!!" howled Carbide, as she desperately held her hand up in front of her to prepare an attack. A sudden surge of strength began to flow into her as she did so, with the earth around her crackling loudly, and the grass under her feet glowing with life. The energy appeared to be flowing into her from under her feet, with a green ball of light gathering in her palms. Carbide let out a ferocious cry as she released the energy, in the form of a sizable light beam, aimed straight for the creature's face, right above its mandibles.

Whatever the vile creature had been about to do to Terra, it was blind-sided before it could act by Carbide's desperate assault. The bolt of green energy struck it squarely in the head, twisting its upper torso of the side and eliciting another spray of corrosive blood that splashed back at Carbide, who caught it on her shield. The defence repulsed a small burst of energy, and while the needle-thin response did strike, it didn't manage much. More importantly, of course, was that this shock was accompanied by a bellowed screech as the queen dropped Terra from its smaller legs and reeled back. Terra awoke, albeit groggily at the impact with the ground. The toxin still made her feel drowsy and sluggish, but now that she'd broken through it wasn't able to have any real effect on her for now. to her fortune, the navi landed just barely on the edge of the grass, without rolling into the spreading pool of poisoned blood beneath the bug, though she'd want to move very quickly if she wanted to avoid contact with it.

The sudden piercing shriek of the insect, combined with her being dropped most unceremoniously onto the ground, resulted in Terra's intense sleepiness being averted. As she laid crumpled on the grass, her limbs spasmed uncontrollably, as a result of her trying desperately to regain control of her body. Then, the noxious fumes from the blood leaking from the insect's body hit her, giving her just enough will to roll away from underneath the pool of purple. Loose soil was thrown around all over the place, as she utilized the momentum of her rolling away to pull herself back upright, nearly running straight into Carbide in the process. The young girl scrambled to her partner, who stuck out an arm to be pulled back up.

"Terra! You're okay, right?!" blurted out Carbide.

"... Mm, thanks," smiled Terra. She wasted no time in focusing her attention back on to the Corpus. She lowered her stance, and tapped the ground with her boot. Almost immediately, the grass around her feet turned over into the soil, and was rapidly replaced with a hard metallic surface. A gleam of light encased Carbide, and steel armor pieces materialized themselves on Terra's limbs and back.

"... Scarlet?" quipped Terra.

"Don't worry, that metal paneling's all I need to see," said Scarlet, as she preempted her Navi's request with two chips in her repertoir, sent through the PET with little more than a few quick taps and swipes on her holographic. Terra nodded curtly as the power of the battlechips infused her with life. A thunderclap echoed throughout the chamber, and then a flash of light. As the light rapidly receded, crackling around her were some very large electrical arcs, curving up from between the cracks of the metal panels. The energy curved and arced into her palms, gathering into two large coalescing spheres. One of the spheres was raring and ready to go, so much so that it escaped her fingers before she could release it, headed straight for the Corpus. The other was a little more controlled, and Terra pointed her palm at the giant insect, releasing the energy in a crackling bolt of lightning.

Carbide was quite mesmerized by the light show, but as she stood in awe behind Terra, she remembered the black cube that had saved them once before. Looking back at it, she saw a few more piles of refuse around the area, and an idea popped into her head. Perhaps there were more things to discover, she thought, as she knelt down to another pile of refuse near her feet, and tried to dig through it to find anything that she could use.

[Ca.2] Act: Search Refuse Pile B (RP)
The pair took a moment to regroup as Terra recovered her senses and raised some more protection for herself and her SP. the queen, thoroughly enraged, just in case it was capable of becoming more so, turned on Carbide in response to the smaller program's interruption, unheeding of the rapidly changing terrain beneath it. As it closed swiftly in on the girl, Terra's firs attack careened wide, missing its mark by a wide margin, but the energy remained, regathering itself to strike again.

It reached out, as though to slash at Carbide with its claws for striking it, but another convulsion wracked its body as it did, and instead of a flurry of claw swipes, Carbide had to deal with a sudden torrent of corrosive, bilious fluids ejected with great force and volume from the creatures mouth, thoroughly covering her. She didn't get quite as drenched in the destructive effluvium as Terra had before, but at the same time, there was notably less of carbide, so it might seem like far more to the smaller girl. Either way, she was soaked from head to toe and scorched badly wherever it touched her skin — her barrier had crumpled almost instantly under the torrent, leaving her undefended. As much as the acidity burned her skin, it was likely having ill effects on the integrity of her more protected areas too — Carbide was not having the most positive fashion day, it seemed. Equally out of luck was Terra's earlier rocky attack, which swung back at the queen a second time, but failed to hit is mark.

Winding back, Terra struck again, more accurately this time, as she sent the full force of her elemental rage crackling across the small space between herself and her target. Unfortunately, despite its size and injuries, the bug continued to move with an infuriatingly sinuous weaving, and twisted its body around and out of the way of her attack. It did seem to offend the bug greatly, though, and it turned back from Carbide, the smaller program forgotten again, as it reared up and screeched defiantly at Terra. The same fuzzing crackled seemed to shroud her connections for a moment, but it didn't manage to take hold, and though the cry left both of their ears ringing, her connection to her operator remained intact.

Despite her dousing, and the lingering dizziness that accompanied being effectively vomited on by a giant bug, Carbide managed to rifle the next nearest refuse pile quickly. there was obviously something useful in it, after Terra had restored the terrain and cleared out most of the rubbish, but what Carbide uncovered was interesting. It looked like a gun mount of some sort, with a small seat and hand grips for directing it. There looked to be some power left in the system display — maybe enough for two shots. The display, when Carbide managed to examine it, proclaimed that it had a 'mag binder' ready.

"Urrrrgh, gross!" exclaimed Carbide, as the creature's corrosive fluids drenched her from top to bottom. The sound of something sizzling could be heard as the blood dripped off of her (relatively scant) clothing and ate away slightly at it. Her crop top began to have a little less top, though with Carbide's level of chest mass, there was still a bit of room left for dignity. That said, her arms still crossed over her chest once she realized what was going on. Her shield formed over her arm, covering up a bit more of her, though it really wasn't much of a covering. However, before she realized it, a double layer of defenses started to crop up over her, with a thin layer of metallic armor covering up her less decent areas.

"T-Thanks!" she said to Terra, who had tilted her head slightly towards her to check on the damage done. The Navi nodded briefly, before she turned back to the Corpus. Most of the damage they had done to it was a result of either having its attacks reflected back at it, or simply just taking it by surprise. She'd have to ambush it in order to take it down, but there wasn't quite enough running space to do so on foot alone.

"Scarlet, I'd like the swords, please," said Terra.

"Both of them? All right, good luck," replied Scarlet, sending in both of the bladed battlechips they had. Terra focused onto the giant Corpus looming over them, before she suddenly let herself fall to the ground, her rear facing upwards, like a predator ready to pounce onto their prey. Suddenly, she leapt off from the ground with a powerful kick directly towards the Corpus. ... Or at least, that was how it appeared to the enormous insect. In reality, the image of Terra leaping towards it was merely an afterimage, and she herself was traveling through the ground at lightspeed in energy form, and shortly re-materialized directly above her foe.

On the ground, Carbide turned back to the machine she had just uncovered. The effects of the poisonous blood were still taking its toll her, making it feel rather sluggish for her to move. Nevertheless, she managed to fall over somewhat into the seat of the mounted weapon, and took hold of the grips that would control its direction. The screen lit up, proclaiming, in loud red letters on a black background, "MAG BINDER LOAD - 2C". She gawked rather dumbfoundedly at the words, having no idea of their meaning. "Looks good, but... how the heck do I use this thing?" she asked nobody in particular, as her thumb rested on a button on the handgrip. Suddenly, the button clicked-- to what result, she would find out soon enough.

Meanwhile, back in the air, Terra's body armor crumbled rather quickly, as her contact with the ground was severed. She stretched out her arms wide, two chunks of rock materializing in her palms. The chunks suddenly extended abruptly into some impressive spires, one slightly larger than the other. Wielding these spires, Terra then spun into her attack, using the larger spire first to strike at the insect's blind spot. Though its size was larger, the spire was broken up almost immediately after she swung it. Left with one remaining spire to wield, Terra plunged down with it, and stabbed downwards with as much force as she could muster once, and twice. Amazingly, the smaller weapon seemed to be more durable, as it retained its shape after the repeated attacks, though whether her attacks were even effective at all would have to be seen.

As Terra evaluated her options, it seemed clear that the bug was always going to do its best to avoid being attacked directly — and that it was surprisingly good at doing so, amidst the erratic twitching and sinuous movements of its damaged body. She devised a more cunning plan instead, and sent Carbide some defences while the candle warmly pulsed its last to the pair.

Executing her diversionary teleport, Terra disappeared while it looked to all the world like she was assaulting the creature head on. At the same time, the bolt of energy from her remote plug, earlier, lanced out of the ground towards its target. As both of them might have anticipated, the bug reared and twisted, hissing as it curled its body away from the attack, but there were yet more prongs to this attack and a moment later, Carbide triggered the weapon she was on to fire. Rather than a weapon, it turned out to be some kind of electro-static grapple. A beam of light shot forward and caught the queen in the back, causing loops of glowing energy to ensnare and cover its form in rings that tightened and constricted it. The gun mount shook and wobbled as the queen thrashed, screeching and spitting. Its blood-shot eye beads found Carbide and it reached out its claws towards her, unable to stretch that far from its bindings, but a moment after it opened its mandibles wider, made a series of gurgling clicks, and then launched a volley of hot, wet blasts of some unknown fluid at carbide instead.

The spray was made up of four distinct streams, and three of them managed to strike the girl, each one peeling off a layer of her protections. The one that hit her shield caused a reflection of energy, striking back at the bugs face even as it recoiled from spitting, and causing another slim gout of poisonous blood to sear back at carbide in turn. Down her defences, there was little she could do to avoid the small spray of additional blood this time, but though it burned and stung a little bit, and likely did more damage to her clothing besides, it didn't really hurt that much, compared to some other things.

Closer in, Terra's decoy came in for a kick, and unable to dodge any more, the bug simply swiped madly at the image with its fore claws, cutting it out of the air. If it had been less livid from pain and rage, it might have been confused by the way it simply disappeared, but the queen seemed beyond noticing such details by this point. The master stroke of Terra's plan, though, came as the navi herself came striking down from above, unseen and with precise accuracy, her weapons striking true as she landed on its back and finally laid in some satisfying damage. it reared and thrashed, screaming in pain as several of its limbs and scythe-edged pincers tried to reach back and tear the woman off. Terra, however, rode her mount nimbly, and avoided every one of its swipes and claws, until, from behind, she felt the sharp jab of its tail stinger scoring a sudden, piercing stab. Immediately, she felt the same sensation that Carbide had experienced earlier, a toxin flooding her system and causing her body to being seizing up. She managed to hold onto her mount for now, but doing so, as her body stopped responding, was going to be difficult. Worse, it didn't look like the binding net was going to hold for much longer — the magnetic bands restraining the bug were flickering the more it thrashed against them.

"Ugh!" grunted Terra, as the stinger's toxin began to take control of her body, seizing it up quite hard. She fought fiercely to stave off the paralysis but as much as she tried, her extremities were already numb to her will, and were limply hanging from the spire she had stabbed into the Corpus. Without being able to move, all Terra could do was fight off the toxin while desperately hanging from the spire, which might not even be hanging from the Corpus's back all too well, judging from its hardened armor.

On the ground, Carbide was repulsed slightly by the sudden launching of the mag binder's net, though it seemed to have good results all the same. "Yeah!" she cheered, as the net restrained the enormous insect with impunity. The text display changed to display "MAG BINDER LOAD - 1C", though Carbide was much too excited about her hit to be reading any of it. Unfortunately, at the same time, the Corpus then hacked up some of its internal fluids, eliciting a panicked yell from her as she put up her hands. Most of the fluids were deflected off, but she was still drenched with some of it in the end, with the corrosiveness of the unknown mix of liquids burning through her clothing, her senses, and her indignation. The torrent of attacks also had obscured her from the attacks that had just struck Terra, and so she had no idea of the predicament that had just befallen her partner.

"Uuuugh, it stinks!" she complained, as she waved her arms about to get some of the stinky fluid mix off of her, along with using the spires on her arm to regenerate her shield. In doing so, however, she accidentally clicked on the button to launch the second binder. The gun mount whirred to life once again, before firing another set of electromagnetic restraints. "Whoa, whoa, whoa!" exclaimed Carbide, as the little girl was put off balance by the sudden activation. Her blunder caused her to unintentionally dismount from the little turret's seat, rolling across the metallic floor towards the multi-colored cube that was standing not too far away.

Unfortunately, her roll was only stopped as she hit her head on the cube, causing her to yell out in pain. "Owwwwww, what the heck?!"

As her body locked up, Terra managed to hold herself on in such a way that the rigor helped keep her in place, and saved her from falling off into the pool of poisonous blood below. It was about all she could do for now, however, and as it struggled and thrashed, their foe was determined to get her off its back. As it writhed, a small jet of heated blood shot from the injury Terra had made moments ago, but even prone as she was, the strew flew over her head. The magnetic bindings failed a moment later, however, and the queen righted herself, rearing back to screech in fury and triumph. Terra found herself far too close to the source of the static-inducing shriek this time, and her connections to Scarlet fuzzed over.

Right in the exultation of being freed from its binding,s Carbide fired the second net, slamming into the bug's mid-section and locking it down once again in afresh set of magnetic coils. It was, to suggest a phrase, not happy about this. the queen stretched and curled, rolling over in is struggles to thrash free, and Terra was stuck dealing with the brunt of its slamming body; incapacitated as she was, she couldn't really do much to avoid being crushed against its spikes and the rest of its weighty body. Amidst this, The queen's tail curled around and jabbed outwards towards Carbide. It may have seemed like she was out of range, but the reticulated shell segments of its tail seemed to stretch out, even to the point of exposing fleshy hide beneath for a moment, as the tail tip reached out to spike her.

While the smaller girl's shield caught the attack, the tiny needle beneath the main stinger still managed to push through enough to nick her arm. It was a sting light enough that she didn't even really feel any pain from t at all, but the numbing, drowsy effects soon began to flood her body. Despite this, she stumbled into the black cube and, upon contact, again caused it to hum quietly and rise form the ground. It spun rapidly, the different coloured faces whirling by, until it stop again, this time with the green face pointing directly upwards. A moment later, small bolts of green energy shot out from the cube, sinking into both Carbide and Terra, and, for a wonder, both of them began to feel the lingering toxic effects of the queen's various attacks being purged swiftly from their systems. Carbide's drowsiness faded before it could properly take hold, and Terra's connection to Scarlet established itself with a strong signal, ready to receive uploads again. At about the same time, Terra would also feel her body beginning to respond again as the paralytic effect faded away. She was still mounted on the bug for now, and the magnetic binding was about to give out again, so her ride was about to get a lot more mobile — although, if she could stay in position where she was, it would still have a hard time avoiding any of her attacks.

The helpful cube settled back to the ground again, the green side now fading to solid black, like the purple face had. That left four faces still lit up with Red, Blue, Yellow and Orange, respectively, and two dark, black faces. The mag binder was now out of power, but there were still two more objects to be uncovered in the ruins of the hive around them.

"Are you all right, you two? I think it's almost down," said Scarlet, tensing up on her bed. The large insectoid's attacks had done a lot of damage to Terra's systems in the fight. Maybe she should try to redirect some of her excess processing power into something more restorative.

"Hanging in there! Ow ow ow," Carbide called out, rubbing the back of her head as she stood back up, lifting her shield to bear. Terra simply grunted wordlessly in the affirmative as she began to recover from the paralysis effects, thanks to Carbide's earlier shenanigans. While she was still mounted on the Corpus itself, it would take a bit more effort to attack it without having it throw her off its back. Though she ran the risk of being forcefully dismounted, it was still an excellent position for her to take advantage of her surprisingly nimble opponent. Closing her eyes, she set up a private audio link, so as to not alert the insect of her plan.

"... Carbide, try to distract it while I attempt to take it out. Scarlet, I need a MarkCannon," she said.

"Leave it to me!" "Coming right up."

With the giant bug now locked down by the second round of electrical net, Carbide grinned confidently as she widened her stance, feeling the strength of the metal paneling underneath her. Terra's defensive processes came back to life once again, with the steel under her feet giving her a protective yellow energy sphere, as well as a thin metal overcoat. "Eat this!" she exclaimed, thrusting out her hand towards the bug. Around her hand, a few small spires of rock spontaneously materialized. Most of the spires shot themselves forward towards her target, but a few stayed to revolve around her hand to form a rocky shield.

Meanwhile, still on the bug itself, Terra grasped the Sword-imbued rocky spire that she had created, as she received the chip she had requested from her operator. Trying to find the most stable footing she could, she activated the MarkCannon through her hand. Bright green lines snaked through her upper arm into her rocky bracers, before a powerful energy blast was shot forth from her palm down at the bug. The shot rocked her footing slightly as she held onto her Sword. Then, she went about rapidly thrusting the hardened spire into the insectoid, aiming to incapacitate it through sheer force.

With her precarious position secured as well as she could make it, Terra braced herself to deliver the final blows to their infuriatingly evasive opponent while Carbide did her best to distract the furious beast. The small Sp's efforts worked well enough; her first rock made the queen slither and twist around it, drawing closer to the girl, just as Terra punched her heavy-hitting blast of energy squarely into its back. The bug reared back with a scream, writhing in shock and beginning to rip and tear furiously at the woman on its back. It was all she could do to hold on while it assaulted her, and despite scoring a series of shredding slices on her, it didn't manage to dislodge her from its blind spot.

Carbide's next rock struck it in the side of the head, striking just perfectly to crush one of its eyes and making the bug shriek again. Its head whipped back to the smaller program, distracted again as it jerked towards her. About to strike, it was at that moment that Terra's rocky spire pierced its already crushed shell, sinking deeply. Rather than actually attacking, the creature lurched and collapsed down, almost on top of Carbide, vomiting a corrosive stream of bile and other damaging fluids. More clearly than ever now, the bug was finally dying, though the wash of foul liquids crashed over Carbide again, dissolving and stripping back the layers of her defences and burning her body. Terra struck again, and with a few final twitches, the great creature went still.

Burning, toxic blood flowed freely from the insect's destroyed body, but with its life extinguished the fluid seemed to be rapidly cooling, and the acrid smell of the poison faded within a minute. By the time Terra was able to dismount from her slain foe, the previously poisonous ground had degraded enough to no longer be damaging to her, and it would only take a small effort on her part to put things right again. Carbide was quite worse for wear, perhaps even more so than her navi, but there was no question that the little SP's valour had given Terra the edge she needed in the final moments.

As the creature's body degraded into junk, a small object remained at the core; it eventually resolved into a small seed; dark and malignant, perhaps; it was black streaked through with lines of purple, and it pulsed slightly, but there was no questioning that it was a seed even so, and still slightly alive. It would probably be much safer in Terra's keeping than left on its own.

As Terra landed with a roll onto the hard metal she had produced earlier, she and Carbide watched the enormous creature disintegrate into junk. The dead insect's carapace almost appeared to sizzle back into the ground as it coalesced into a small black seed. Terra bent down to pick it up, and sensed the malignant forces of the swampy earth that had resulted from the creature's corrosive blood. She could never replicate such an unabashedly violent force with her terraforming, but the little seed might. As the black seed pulsed with purple lights in her hand, she allowed it to be transferred to the PET as Battlechip data.

"We did it! Woohoo-- ugh," cheered Carbide, before she stumbled on her feet. Luckily, Terra was quick to catch her before she fell. The SP simply grinned as she leaned on Terra, clearly looking quite exhausted. Bruises and cuts dotted her all over, and her legs looked like they were about to give out at any moment. "Wow, that fight took a lot more out of me than I thought," she laughed. "You think we could call it a day, Terra?"

Terra furrowed her brow briefly, before she smiled. "... Yes, let's retire for now," she said, as she activated Carbide's jackout process, letting the SP disappear back to her PET in a flash of light.

"Hmm, PoisonSeed, huh," said Scarlet, reading up on the data as she received it. "Are you sure you want to use this, Terra?"

"... It might be useful somehow," said Terra, as she drew herself back up, and started to restore the area from the creature's corruption. As she did so, the sight of the earlier "monster" nagged at her. Though to say it was a monster felt a bit weird. It was more of a... primal force, than it was a monster. Her instinct felt like it was pulling her towards it, tugged at her heart incessantly. Before she knew it, she was walking towards the area where it disappeared into the wall earlier.

"Terra, you're not thinking of going further in, are you? You're really beat up," said Scarlet.

"... I want to follow the thing from earlier. I need to find out for myself what it was." Her eyes were hardened with determination as she said so, and Scarlet sighed in resignation. Looking through her folder, she found a small subchip tucked in a forgotten corner. It wouldn't patch Terra up completely, but at the same time it wouldn't let her be a sitting duck.

"Don't get in over your head," said Scarlet, as she activated the subchip, and recovery energies washed over Terra. The Navi closed her eyes, allowing the subchip to work its magic. As she did so, she also let the world before her talk to her senses, trying to sense where the enormous mass of earth from before had gone. Sure enough, there was an unmistakeable huge mass of residual energy, and she allowed herself to be drawn by its allure as she walked forth.

[Battle 11 - Ready!]
[Terra.EXE: 90 HP.]
After sending her exhausted SP back home to get some rest, Terra was drawn onwards by the compulsion to follow the great entity she'd had such a strange close encounter with. Before that, though, she took some time to restore the area where they had fought the bug, and, in the process, revealed the remaining two objects hidden in the remnants of refuse. One appeared to be a device that, when triggered, would bath a large area in status-restoring waves indiscriminately. It had enough juice for three uses, apparently. It might have been nice to have found this one earlier. Oh well. The other pile revealed something more immediately valuable, in the form of another data crystal.

As if on cue, though, there wasn't much time for Terra to check it out, or get on with her search for the being that had moved onwards; a grizzled bellow thundered out of one of the lower tunnel entrances in the direction her senses were telling her to head, and it belonged to a truly massive bear. Its fur looked like it was mostly a dull white, unlike other bears she'd encountered in this area, though one had to wonder.. why more bears? This one dwarfed the other ursine foes she'd come across today, and would easily stand well over three times her own heigh on its hind legs. It demonstrated this fact as it reared up, roaring again with a volume and force strong enough to send a physical shudder through the watching navi.

More viruses were edging out of other tunnel ways now as well, now that the fighting had stopped. A trio of white-capped ghosts drifted from an upper tunnel on the same side and began to float slowly down towards her, tongues hanging out; one of them looked a fair bit smaller than the other two, but all three had their eyes on Terra. Meanwhile, off to the right, two metools peeked out of another ground floor tunnel. Only one of them had its signature pickaxe, though, and the other offered a slightly variant reading to Scarlet's PET. Finally, a flash of green and yellow came from far overhead as an overly animate cob of corn tumbled down the full heigh of the chamber to land with an exceptional crash on the moss below. The bear seemed unperturbed, any more than it already was, though if this bear was anything like others she'd encountered in the past, the corn might just find itself converted into a projectile weapon if it wasn't careful. It picked itself up and began bouncing in place, looking around at its new surroundings in a daze.

Scarlet had suggested that Terra not not push too hard, but it seemed like the area was pushing back quite hard enough as it was.

"Wait! Hold on, Terra," said Scarlet, as a small warning sign appeared on her screen. The Navi suddenly halted in her tracks, while Scarlet pulled up the warning to read it. The notice alerted her to the possible presence of more viruses in the area, but just as she was about to relay the information to Terra, the Navi spoke first. "... Scarlet, there are a few more viruses incoming. Is it particularly important?" she said. About her, her defenses began to start up, enveloping her with a low green hue, as well as encasing her with similarly-colored armor.

Scarlet giggled slightly. "Ah, no, I was just about to tell you about the viruses. Do you want the usual?"

"... Please do," said Terra, as she looked over to one of the items that she had uncovered earlier. The trance that she was in had distracted her enough from a shimmering green crystal that rotated in place. Her attacks would definitely destroy it in one if she was to leave it alone, but she didn't exactly want to decrypt it there and then. Still, there wasn't much of a choice, so she reached over slightly and rapped on its surface with the back of her knuckles. The crystal began to fall in on itself slowly, decrypting its contents to the world. Whether it was going to be beneficial to her or otherwise, she couldn't tell, as she was already focusing on the other viruses.

There was quite a sizable spread, coupled with a rather intimidating-looking bear virus. At that moment, she felt the chip data being sent over from her operator, which was her cue to move. Terra crouched down low to the ground, touching the grass beneath her feet with her fingers, feeling the beat of the world through them. Then, she suddenly vanished in the blink of an eye, traveling through the earth as an incorporeal mass of data. Before anyone noticed, she was already behind the enormous Kodiak virus, her foot lifted high in the air in preparation for the attack. Letting gravity take hold, Terra spun around with the flair of a ballet dancer as her leg crashed down onto the ground, causing a deep rumble through the cave. Under her feet, the earth caved in on itself, and a mass of red-hot magma burst forth, flooding the entire area with molten rock.

As Terra tried to open up the Mystery Data, a loud, piercing shriek of anger shot out from it at her. Slowly but surely the MD was a mimic! Splitting off from the middle of the pyramid-like data and tendrils of inky black darkness splitting off from the four corners of the virus, wriggling and waving about as two beady red eyes poked out from the middle of it's body. And as it finished coming out of it's shell, a loud, klaxon sounded out in the room, the mimic flailing it's tendrils all about, trying to summon new viruses to the battle to make Terra's life more difficult.

Washing over the battle field, untold dangers would be wrought, the two operable machines in the area melted into a healthy pile of molten slag and the empty metal crate would withstand the attack from Terra, but looked very unstable and singed to hell and back. The Kodiak was splashed and burnt by the lava, the BombCornEX just -barely- avoided total destruction by barely jumping over the lava and the two Metools were drowned by the attack, leaving only charcoal black helmets. The mimic it's self taking a hit as it summoned the viruses to the battle, a various cavalcade of new monsters being summoned to the battle, alongside a Gaia look-alike that hovered above the ground, wielding a giant hammer with a red and yellow color scheme. The Kodiak, angered at Terra for her terror against the viruses, turned to face her, lunging at the navi and taking a swipe at her body, which was blocked by her wood-elemental barrier, the Kodiak immediately regretting it's decision as the lava burned at it's feet, turning it's feet charcoal black. And as all that happened, the Spooky viruses slowly floated down to the ground, tongues hanging out as they prepared to lash out at the murderer of it's kin.

Watching the Mystery Data crystal decrypt itself into a Mimic trap, Terra clicked her tongue as even more viruses started to pour into the area. The blaring klaxons heralded not one, not two, but seven additional adversaries for her to worry about. Machines, bugs, shells, statues... and even a giant clam, for whatever reason. It'd be one rough day for the green girl. "... Scarlet, I'm not sure if I can handle this many at once," she said. Her operator's brow furrowed as she scoped out the area. Certainly, there were quite a few enemies around the area. Scarlet rested her head in her hand in deep thought for a moment, before her fingers danced across the holographic keyboard merrily.

"Alright, hold on, Terra. I'm uploading a program that might help you with them, along with a chip or two. You're free to use it as you see fit, or you can get out as soon as you can. I'm sending it now," she said, punctuating the statement with one last tap of her keyboard.

Back in the Okuden network, a dim light began to glow from the center of Terra's bosom, spreading out warmth through her body as the program fused into her. She put her hand against her chest just as the warmth subsided, and the Kodiak lashed out against her barrier uselessly. While the dim hum of the barrier reinstating its protection began to echo through the chamber once again, Terra grasped her raised hand tightly, a resolve born from within her. "Understood, Scarlet, I'll do my best," she said, her boots scraping against the soil beneath them as she reevaluated her stance.

The scraping sound quickly gave way to the distinct sound of metal against metal as Terra's power took hold once more, transforming the paneling around her into a shiny metal finish. However, that wasn't all that was happening. One of her hands went to the side, while the other pointed forward towards the Kodiak virus, with two fingers extended. Her stare was intense as she beckoned to the virus in a challenging "come-hither" gesture. Her challenge wasn't unfounded, of course. Between her two live defenses, her very skin was now being infused with the power of the metallic paneling beneath them, turning them into a literal iron defense.

Meanwhile, her other hand, extended to the left, was silently gathering energy as it did so. Loading the battlechip that Scarlet had given her into her systems, she incorporated the power that had been infused into her to draw her energy from the ground beneath her. Near-silent crackles of energy were the only obvious signs that something was happening, but if one were to look closer, they would see a distortion in the air extending far off from her fingers, which were now "gripping" something invisibly. Would any of the viruses take her up on the challenge, she would wait for the ideal moment to catch as many as possible in the line of fire, before spinning around to release all of the pent-up voltage in a brilliant circular lightshow of electrical grandeur.

Startled but not dissuaded by the sudden influx of extra viruses at the unveiling of her tricky mimic, Terra keep a cool head and assessed her options for dealing with such a large crowd of dangers. While she restored her barrier, however, the enraged Kodiak didn't much care for giving her time to think. It reared up to its full height and let out a tremendous roar, which reverberated around the massive chamber and shook Terra to her core, and then it began charging out of the lava towards her, unheeding of the way its feet burned.

From where it hovered, further off, the massive Sledge statue raised up its hammer and hurled it in Terra's rough direction, though to her great fortune, it was only in her rough direction, and the strike itself flew past her by a long way. Where it landed, a secondary pulse of electrical energy exploded outwards, but mercifully it wasn't in range of anyone worth mentioning. Terra prepared the the next stage of her precautions as the BombCorn bounced up and launched another projectile her way, but it, too, suffered a bad case of poor aim, allowing the earth navi to enact her transformation unhindered.

The ground beneath her rippled as the metal terrain spread outwards, and almost as though responding to this, the nasty Mimi opened up enough to spew a crackling ball of glitch-ridden electrical energy towards her. It moved slowly, winging past her left hand side by a fair margin, but best not to forget it was there — the crackling ball began to curve around and home back again. Regardless of this, Terra's changes wrought their essence on her own body well, anchoring the woman and hardening her form to be night impervious. It also gave her a shiny, reflective surface too.

The heavy, slow Armadil was gradually moving up to make a straight line with Terra, so it could attack with impunity, but meanwhile, the other lesser viruses all seemed drawn to her shiny new look. The spookies wanted to have a taste, the skeeters wanted to try some too. The Kodiak, well, the Kodiak really did just want to tear her to pieces, but regardless of motive, the horde descended upon her just moments after she got her protectives up. So busy were they in the frenzy that none of the viruses noticed her preparing an energy-laden strike, drawing just enough strength from the metal panels around her without compromising them — it was a deadly combination.

Within the flurry of attacking viruses, they did manage to wear down both her barrier and casing effectively, but when the Kodiak's claws struck a mighty blow down on her unarmoured body, its claws simply scraped off without damage. It wasn't pleased, not at all, but before it, or any of the other viruses could realise their peril, Terra retaliated with a broad, encircling sweep of her electrically charged blade, sending sparks arcing through the panels all around her as she struck. anything she hit, singed — even the behemoth Kodiak, caught with just the wrong combination of factors, couldn't stay standing as her blade eviscerated him, then send shocking pulses of lighting through his insides. It looked like it was about to strike at her again, but couldn't muster the strength, and toppled backwards with a thundering crash, smoking and charred. Two of the spooky ghosts had managed to avoid Terra's death-bringing blade, though they looked horrified and shocked by what had just happened all around, and perhaps the pair were beginning to question their attack on the navi standing before them.

While this had been going on, the Needler platform had lifted off the ground, and now made a swift attack run on Terra, hoping to surprise her with a concentrated volley of needle fletchets, but, as predicted, they dind't manage to so much as scratch her metallic skin. Dejected, it hovered around a little more, before beginning to move back towards where it had started, but the Sledge had been watching, and it decided to try a different approach. Rather than attacking directly, it eyed the metal panels underfoot, as much as a statue could, then raised its hammer up high, causing a a shock-wave of electrical energy to roll outwards, calling down secondary lighting strikes in its wake.

Unfortunately, while the idea of trying something different might be clever for your average virus, in this particular case, it didn't pay off so well; The lighting wave struck Terra, certainly, but it had no effect on her metal body. The all-pervasive wave of force, however, didn't pass over just Terra alone: The Mimic took a double jolt from the indiscriminate wave, and both of the spookies near Terra took some shocks between them the needler avoided the wave and the lighting bolts that followed, and the ShellGeek was safe in its hard shell, but the slow old Armadil had to weather a pair of small jolts as well. The Sledge, deep down somewhere in its viral cores, realised that that wasn't actually too clever, and resolved not to try that attack again today.

At the end of this mayhem, Terra's iron defence faded away, but she was swift to replace it with a refresh of her planar armour, sheathing her body in electrical-elemental protection.

A Mystery Data bisected horizontally, with a shadowy core binding the halves together. Two menacing red eyes leer out from the shadows in the crack between them, and a swirl of dark energy of the same color as the data whirls around the entire virus constantly. A Mimic only spawns if an MD is present, and the roll to check contents comes up as a Trap. The MD then becomes a single Mimic. Mimics do not ever appear otherwise. Once triggered, a Mimic either mass summons Viruses, Navis, or other Battle Programs for the next battle number, or mass teleports all allies to the location of the next battle (which is always within the same network area), and the battle begins immediately. These mass summon and mass teleport abilities are unique to Mimics, and cannot be emulated. When a Mimic is defeated, it reverts to MD form. At this point, it becomes ethereal, and cannot be damaged in any way.

These viruses appear to be dire polar bears with anger management issues, muderous claws, and the beastly strength to hurl ice cubes or whatever else comes to hand like it was fired from a cannon. Kodiaks are massive, easily 6 meters tall when standing up on their hind legs. Their roar is enough to stun a Navigator in cold fear.

The crackle of electricity faded as quickly as the steel in Terra's body, stuck in the middle of the slashing motions. The last remnants of the electricity exited through her feet, though it took her a bit more than the usual time to recover, with the Kodiak's earlier roar having shaken her more than she had expected. The energy then echoed back up through the surface of the panels, encasing her with her usual yellow protective wall of light.

Scarlet was quite ecstatic; the first trial-by-fire of her newest signature program had gone swimmingly well. Still, Terra hadn't caught as many viruses as she had hoped in her gamble, but even having struck a little fear into her enemies' hearts was enough. "That was amazing!" she exclaimed, causing Terra's face to flush slightly, though she didn't quite show it.

"... Thank you, Scarlet. Still a few more to go. I'll be relying on you still," said Terra.

"Okay, I'm sending in a few more chips. Tell me if you want anything specific, okay?" replied Scarlet, as her chip display set out to send in two more chips to support her Navigator in battle.

Terra scouted out her surroundings. While one of the main high-integrity threats had been neutralized, there was still the issue of the Sledge virus. She didn't quite like the look of it, what with its intimidatingly large hammer. Still, it didn't really look like it had too much of an impact as long as she stayed well outside of its range. A more pressing matter was that of the more mobile viruses, especially the hardy-looking Armadill. Energy gathered up from underneath Terra's feet as she formulated a follow-up to her attack.

Focusing on the armadillo virus, she gestured with her neck to beckon it towards her, exhaling sharply as she did so. In her peripheral vision, she kept her other primary targets in mind: the remaining high-integrity Sledge, as well as the dangerous Mimic crystal. Her plan was to cause the Armadill to charge towards her once more, then sweep over to the side to catch it right after it revealed itself from its tightly-packed roll. Though she could just as well leap over to the virus itself right then and there, she couldn't guarantee a clean line between her and her other priority targets, though if it came to that she could just as well execute that angle of attack.

It didn't take long for her to sense the right timing. With a duck and a roll, Terra gathered up the energy from the electrically-aligned paneling below her, picking up a sizable electric charge. Yellow sparks flew from between her fingers as she thrust her arms forward together, discharging a lightning-quick bolt towards her targets. Then, towards the end of her rolling maneuver, she kicked off from the ground back to a standing position, activating the second chip in the process.

The ground flipped about from the point of her kick like a magician's trap door, turning over to reveal an oddly angular yellow-white metal dumbbell. The dumbbell then rumbled before it rolled over to a few of the viruses, aiming to crush through their ranks with its undoubtedly intimidating size. Watching her summoned ally roll about merrily, Terra stopped for a bit for a breather, refreshing the integrity of her armor in the process.

While her operator enthused over the effectiveness of her navi's efforts, Terra herself was more focused on what remained. The two Spookies that were up in her face still were a concern, but before she had a chance to deal with them and their tongues, the Sledge winged its massive hammer in her direction again. It was, it had to be said, having no luck with that throwing arm, however, and the projectile spun away to the side, where it exploded in an electrical cloud, harmlessly. The large statue rumbled, and one of its eyes turned to the side, looking towards the Shell virus nearby.

Terra repositioned slightly, trying to set up her next attack, though thankfully she didn't need to move too far. It was enough, however, that her subtle movement left the returning ball of glitch energy to drift by her a second time without connecting. A moment later the Shell virus opened up, caught sight of the Sledge glaring at it, and seemed to understand. If anything, it actually seemed a bit nervous, all things considered. Rather than its normal weaponised harpoons, the virus launched a star-tipped arrow that curved and whizzed through the air, connecting with the Sledge's back and pushing it all the way up into Terra's personal space. Up close, she would be able to feel the meta-virus' almost tangible electrical aura, crackling with power. It clenched a fist and recalled its hammer to hand.

The Mimic spun its facets, and with a dark chuckle sent a cloud of hazy mist to surround one of the remaining spooky ghosts, while the other took time out to heal itself. Emboldened by its new defensive barrier, the second spooky tried to assault Terra again, but this time its tongue just flailed aimlessly in the air near her, and failed to connect.

A moment later, the Armadil was finished lining itself up and it rolled towards the small cluster of enemies. Despite her best efforts to avoid it, Terra was more focused on getting her line just right, and was caught by the quick-moving virus as it careened by her; the blow crushed through her barrier, but it was enough to divert the creature from delivering any further harm.

As the Armadil uncurled, however, Terra was ready to retaliate and unleashed all of her rage in a searing line of elemental energy, drawn from the ground beneath her. The electrical blast was enough to char the Armadil out of existence, and it shattered the mimic, further off, with a sharp shriek like breaking glass. On the way, the bolt struck through the sledge, dangerously close to hand now, and while it seemed to bore through the electrical field surrounding the statue, the virus itself wasn't harmed.

Somewhere off to the side, the BombCorn launched another corn shot, seemingly at nothing in particular; it concertina wasn't anywhere near Terra. It bounced happily regardless, and seemed to feel like it was contributing to the battle.

The needler, by this time, had lifted off again ,and seeing that its fletchet attack had no effect, it tried to nail Terra with its heavier guns. It was only able to line one of them up with her for a quick double round of fire, but between them, the two shots managed to tear up the remainder of her armour. As it settled back to the ground beside the still open and steaming ShellGeek, Terra attacked the two with her swiftly summoned metallic dumbbell, managing to smash both of them cleanly, despite the difficulty that manoeuvring such an object presented. It wasn't quite able to connect with anything else, but the needler was scrapped and the ShellGeek wasn't too much better off. The dumbbell itself remained at the end of its attack run, ready to swing back again in a moment.

It was at about this moment that the Sledge swung its great hammer down on the much-assaulted navi with tremendous force. Tired of missing with its long range attacks, it tried to hammer her down directly with a bone-shattering strike, but in the last moments before the blow landed, Terra managed to restore enough of her planar armour to catch the brunt of the strike. It was still powerful enough to drive her to her knees, and the freshly reformed armour crumbled away again, but she was safe from the strike itself. the same could not be said for the surrounding cluster of viruses and a pulse of electrical energy washed off the hammer in all directions, amplifying through the panels as it went. Normally, the Sledge wouldn't worry about hurting itself with such dangerous strikes in close range, but in this particular moment, its aura was depleted, and the backlash of the shock wave scored it lightly. The two Spookies were also too close to the point of impact, and the one that had healed itself took a fresh set of scorching, while the other had a portion of its new protectives worn away by the sparks. A moment too late to save it, Terra felt the Sledge's aura reassert itself, crackling back to life around the potent virus.

Green MimicGreen Mimic (Mimic)
