First deployment?

Broadside and Ro saw the terrain suddenly shift to Glass, and worried them both. Glass was one of the deadliest terrain types in existence, but it wasn't really a big deal unless you had Break attacks or Bombs flying around. In this case, there were two bomb-spitting candy bags jumping about just ahead. For Broadside, this was potentially dangerous, as his barrier could absorb much, but there was still the potential of a lot of shrapnel getting through and seriously injuring him. Which means....

On the other hand...

For Ro, this was outright deadly. Ro had no means of evading the viruses attacks and the resulting fountains of deadly glass shrapnel. And the thought of him trying to stave off the rain of death with his riot shield was laughable. Which means....

Knowing they had no other options, the two, almost as one, quickly raised their rifles, picked a target, and fired as quickly as they could. Broadside ejected his now-empty chip clip the moment his shot was away. Ro just prayed.

Broadside and Ro manage to clean up the rest of the viruses with a one two combo of their Zapring and Gunfire, causing a GMD to fall onto the ground, spinning around, and splashing zenny onto the navi and SP...I think there is also Chip Data in there...

Broadside was more than a little surprised when a GMD fell out of the sky and promptly hosed him down with Zenny data. This was certainly an event not covered by his thinking, at all. Ro, on the other hand, avoided getting clobbered by a volley of bugfrags by ducking behind his shield. The two collected the prank rewards, and ventured further into the network.

Broadside came across three brightly lit glass terrains, standing on a single patch of ground that wasn't. Even before the navi could take a step further, a noise of a gear rolling was humming on the ground below and the terrains began to shine with different colors. First, the left screen stopped on red, then the middle on white, and the right on yellow. In just seconds, the screen transformed into real terrains and viruses appeared as well!

-BATTLE FOUR, START!-
"What kind of network is this?" Jared said with a mixture of surprise and unhappiness in his voice as he watched as the very network itself not only spawned hostile terrain types out of the blue, but also generated viruses. This was anathema to the Netopian Net Tech. I just watched the network generate viruses. Generate them! That's not supposed to happen. Ever. Which means someone or something hacked the local network... As these thoughts raced through his mind, he grabbed an assortment of chips and slotted them into the PET. Jared hit the [Send] key with neither a word or a spare thought about it as he was too preoccupied with the ramifications of what he'd just seen.

Broadside, meanwhile, had a rather different perspective on the problem than his Operator did. For starters, instead of being worried about the possibility of the network actually generating viruses and how that could be a global problem and so on... No, he was more concerned with the possible damage this batch of viruses could do to him and Ro right this second, and how to destroy them before they could inflict said damage.

Of the viruses present, Broadside only recognized two groups of them. One group was composed of Gaias; an especially tough class of virus that was generally able to take and shell out large amounts of damage, but moved both slowly and rarely. The other group he recognized was composed of KillerEyes, which were similarly movement impaired but made up for it with a devastating, and fairly accurate, plasma beam attack. He did not recognize the third group at all, which appeared to be a bunch of half melted candles with evil-looking faces. Even if the third group proved to be almost harmless, the other two were anything but.

And Broadside was not about to assume they were. He turned his head to glance back at Ro, and said simply: "Concentrate on staying functional. Do not attempt to engage this enemy."

"Roger." Ro responded with a nod as he back-pedaled to give Broadside more space. The SP then began to watch the enemy in an unfocused manner as he instead concentrated on watching for signs of movement from them that might result in an attack.

Broadside quickly looked back towards the enemy as he formed a chip clip and loaded his rifle. His Aegis Defense protocol switched itself on as he assumed the same cross-body firing stance he'd employed in the previous battle, and turned to face the group of KillerEyes. The rifle was aimed right at the lead virus when, instead of firing, he shifted his aim to the right, switched the gun over to rail-fire mode, and elevated the barrel roughly 60 degrees. Broadside then, in what appeared to be an act of madness, pulled the trigger while the gun was aimed at empty air. The MagBomb launched from the barrel and proceeded to fly in an arc towards an area of open ground in the middle of the KillerEye formation.

Broadside planned to let the blast handle the rest as he shifted his aim over to the group of Gaias. He then repeated his mortar attack on the hammer-wielding viruses, and aimed to catch the group in the blast zone rather than try to tag one directly with what was an unwieldy, and at-best inaccurate, projectile. This tactic was born from prior experience in his largely unsuccessful attempts to hit anything more advanced than a Metool with these weapons.

Broadside grimaced as he swicthed the weapon back to standard operating mode, and turned to face the first of the strange candle viruses. He aimed his Guard Rifle directly at the virus this time before pulling the trigger. The Guard Rifle let out a hissing cough as it sent a glassine orb filled with bubble-trap data towards the half melted virus. He strafed his aim over the remaining two viruses and fired an identical glass ball at each of them.

As soon as Broadside placed his Aegis Defense around him, the terrains under the viruses changed into a solid color once more. The navi prepared his MagBomb and fired it towards the KillerEyes, but while it was in mid-air, the viruses was swallowed by the colors underneath and began the roulette once more!!

Just before the bomb hit the ground, the pattern was now yellow, red, and white, and the three gaias rose up and took the stunning hit from the bomb. Another one was lobbed, and the grounds started to spin and the gaias was placed right in front of the bomb again, taking a even more devastating hit!! Just when things was strange, even the Bubblestar made its mark on the Gaia when it switched its place!

While all the shots was mistakenly focused on the Gaias, it gave the rest of the viruses for an assault on the navi, destroying the powerful barrier into shreds.

Terrain: 1% Normal, 33% Normal*, 33% Lava*, 33% Magnet* [* Randomly switches terrain/viruses every turn!]

Broadside: 200 HP [Barrier Destroyed!]
Ro: 40 HP
"What the...?" J.T. blurted as he watched the terrain shift. This was nothing terribly unusual here in NetVegas' Network, as he'd observed something like this before. What was unusual, however, was the terrain took the viruses with it when it shifted.

Broadside tried watching the pattern of the terrain shifts, but the sensor beams striking his barrier and the columns of flame that burst from the ground around him made it impossible to tell exactly what was happening. The direction of the beam strikes seemed to change a time or two, but it was still hard to tell where they'd come from since all he could see in the sea of flames was the point of impact with his barrier. "Did I hit anything?"

Jared had never seen anything like this, and frowned as he watched the majority of Broadside's attacks barely nick the Gaia viruses' stone forms as they shuffled about. "Just the Gaias. The good news is they're out of commission for a while. The bad news is you didn't damage them very much."

Then the barrier gave out... Now we're in trouble.

"Scatter." Broadside commanded as the barrier disintegrated. He immediately took his own advice and boosted to the right, towards the Magnet terrain. He leaped into the air as he reached the border where the normal terrain ended and the roulette began, all the while hoping he wasn't about to take a lava bath.

Ro reacted at the same moment, but instead made a bee-line for the edge of the lava. Unlike Broadside, he had seen the terrain shifting about, and had a general idea of how the shift's timing went. I have no idea what the pattern is, but so long as the Lava isn't there when I arrive, I don't care. With that thought, he performed the same sort of booster-jump Broadside had executed before him.

After Broadside landed the jump, a new set of chip data appeared in his memory banks. The data consisted of a pair of Shotguns, a pair of ElecReel1s, an Airshot1, and a Guard1. He'd just begun to sort out the chip data as he materialized a chip clip and proceeded to load it into his rifle when a random thought popped into his mind: Talk about gambling with our lives... What is this, slots? He ignored it and went back to trying to figure out how to hit what he shot at when the voice added: As long as we're playing slots, I wanna spin the reels too~

Broadside froze in place as an idea it hit him. Hey... that's not a bad idea. With that thought, he figured he'd stopped in place too long and kicked on his jets again while accessing his memory banks again. He queued up both ElecReel1s, activated the satellite uplink protocol, and uploaded both chips as he dashed about.

A moment later, the first of a double barrage of satellite-fired particle beams rained from the sky...

Unfortunately for Broadside, when he moved towards the magnet panel, the terrains started to shuffle again and the panels became lavas! After stepping onto the hot lavas and receiving minor damages around his leg, Broadside proceeded to evade the attacks thrown by the candles near him. He jumped the moment the slots changed again and landed on the calm Normal terrains along with the stunned Gaias. The satellite strike covered the entire area with blue lights, constantly raining down the beams on the viruses. Even the switching couldn't save the virus from the imminent attack as the group suffered a devastating loss! The surviving Killereyes locked onto the navi and fired couple of beams and a single pegged the navi right on the right shoulder.

Broadside: 170 HP [Stun!: -1 Action]
Ro: 40 HP
Broadside suddenly took a hit to the right shoulder from a KillerEye's sensor beam. Electricity immediately began to surge through his body, which caused his arm to spasm and drop his rifle involuntarily. As he started to fall forwards, he clenched his teeth, and focused on suppressing the currents so he could regain motor control. Preferably before I face-plant into the floor.

Broadside managed to regain enough control of his subroutines to take a strained step forward with his left leg. He managed to avoid falling flat on his face, and slowly knelt to the ground while he regained the rest of his motor control. While true that he needed to do so to pick up his rifle and continue the fight, the reality was he wasn't able to remain standing at the moment even if he wanted to. Not that he'd tell anyone that....

----

Meanwhile, Ro managed to avoid a stray beam of his own that'd missed Broadside entirely. He heard a beam connect with something, and whipped his head around to see what... And that what happened to be Broadside. A quick glance told the SP it could have been worse. The shoulder armor had done its job in dulling the beam strike enough to prevent it from lancing clean through the Navi's shoulder. Even so, the beam left a small burn mark as a souvenir. He was about to take a step towards the Navi and help Broadside back to his feet when the Navi's kneeling form dipped low enough to bring a lone Haunted Candle into view. I don't remember seeing any signs of flames erupting from the ground in the last minute or two, which means this virus should be all primed and ready... Ro acted quickly on his thoughts. He raised his guard rifle towards the virus, and fired a pair of snap shots (one from each barrel) over Broadside's kneeling form, hoping to snuff the threat before it could burn them.

----

Broadside reached out to grasp his rifle when a ri-- no, two electric rifle bolts flashed past just over his head. At the same time, Jared spoke to him over their com link... "Get moving again, Broadside. You've only got a few moments before those KillerEye recharge."

"Acknowledged." Broadside responded as he stood up again, and activated the DBLBeam1 chip data that had just appeared in his memory banks. As soon as the remote weapon platform appeared high in the sky overhead, Broadside took off in a sprint along the patch of Normal Panels. He then loaded his Guard Rifle with a fresh chip clip that included the Airshot1 and both of the Shotguns Jared had sent previously, as well as a freshly received ElementalRage1. By now, the randomizer was at work again, shuffling the battlefield and everything on it. "Jared, I need you to help me spot the viruses as soon as the randomizer stops. I'll only have a few seconds to engage them with my weapons before they vanish again."

----

"Will do." Jared said as he switched to an overhead view of the field, and zoomed out. Rather than try to keep track of individual viruses, he noted what color the terrain was under the KillerEyes. He then settled in and watched for that and the standard gray of Broadside's patch of Normal Panels instead. Once the reels stopped, it would be a simple call of 'left' or 'right'.

Jared sat there and waited for a dozen or so seconds until the terrain suddenly stopped changing. When it finally did, he quickly identified where Broadside and Ro's colorless slice of terrain was, and the glowing yellow patch where the KillerEyes resided. He tapped an input key indicating which side the viruses had appeared on, and watched as his Navi kicked on his boosters to continue traveling in the same direction while turning to engage the KillerEyes with his now-loaded rifle. Broadside opened fire; shooting a silver colored beam at each of the viruses one after the other. As the Navi exchanged beam fire with the viruses in the brief moment between randomizations, the weapon platform loaded with the DBLBeam1 reached attack range, unfolded, and added its 2 cents to the light fight with bewildering precision.

This is actually kinda fun to watch.... Jared thought to himself as the light show played out on his screen.

Ro was able to shoot down the last HauntedCandle moments before the Slots reeled again, sending the last batch of viruses all over the place. Though Broadside was temporarily vulnerable, the slots had some effect on the viruses as they couldn't get a perfect lock on the navi. When he was able to shake off the paralysis, Broadside was able to get in the action and ready the rifle towards where the Killereyes stood. The slots rolled again, but with Lady Luck by Broadside's side (LOL), the viruses didn't move from their original spots and felt the wraith of the rifle shots.

The double beam was activated and the two separate beams became a single blue pillar, treating Broadside's previous injuries.

As the exchange of beam fire ended, and the randomizer kicked in again, Broadside reversed course and began sprinting back the other direction. As he moved, he remained alert for another signal from his operator that would indicate which side the virus had appeared on when the randomizer stopped. The moment that signal came, Broadside turned towards the virus, leveld his Guard Rifle, and fired an enhanced Shotgun blast in the virus' general direction while boosting sideways. If necessary, he would attempt this again....

----

Ro, on the other hand, did as little as possible to attract attention. He stood by and waited for any signs of him being targeted by the remaining virus; fully prepared to evade if necessary. After witnessing that brief exchange between Broadside and the KillerEyes, he was certain he wanted none of it.

Broadside easily dodged the lightning fired by the lone virus and prepared his Guard Rifle for a clean shot. Just as before, the terrain slots moved again and the viruses stayed at the same spot! Finally, the viruses was taken care of with a single shot...but the slots was at a constant spin. It stopped momentarily, revealing MD crystals hovering in the middle of each of the terrains, and began to roll again.

Fortunately, a small control panel rose up from the ground with three buttons, A, B, and C...This must decide which MD Broadside could acquire... [NO RNG FOR THIS!]

Press a button and get a trap, maybe.

Aww, don't be that way. A moment went by then another random thought added You want that one. while the metal reel highlighted itself in Broadside's vision.

Broadside sighed, walked over to the console and pressed the "B" button.
After the middle button was pushed by Broadside, the slots began to slow down and eventually came to a stop. The two MDs on the side disappeared the moment it became visible, while the sole MD stood quietly for Broadside to claim...

Behind Broadside was a navi, dressed with a red tux from head to toe and a thick hat that covered his face with a looming shadow. A small light lit up within the shadow, but too minuscule that the face couldn't be visible, and a cloud of smokes was vented out into the air.

"You have patients, execution, and an actual brain that you don't see everyday..."

The navi tilted his head up, shortening the shadow to reveal only his smiling mouth, biting onto a lit up cigarette. "My name is...No, Just call me Psycho. That's what everyone calls me by.
