Returning the way they had come didn't take Terra and Carbide terribly long. They were back-tracking soon enough that no new viral threats had crept into the area since their destructive passage earlier, and the the trip back across the lava field was pleasant enough that they could likely shrug off the feeling that they were walking away from an interesting encounter, and possibly even answers to the over-populous Jelly mystery, just beyond the hill. Still, that wasn't really what they were trekking through Hades for in the first place, so the pair struck out in a fresh direction once they'd managed to return to their original jack-in point.

The rock ground in this new direction soon gave way to baking desert sands, interrupted with long, flat stone stretches and the occasional scalding metallic vent that jetted boiling steam into the sky. It was as they were crossing one of these long stone plinths that an ancient-looking Skarab virus shuffled up out of the side a short way off to the side, getting its bones in the right order while it locked onto the pair of interlopers. Another one rose from the sand to the right, a little further on, and a third, directly in front but a fair distance off.

A rumble in the ground announced the rise of a small volcano, complete with a small pool of fresh magma encircling it, directly behind the pair, and as it crested and settled, the flow of magma surged and snaked through the sand further, splitting the ground as yet another HeatJelly rose from the molten depths. The crack in the stone also gave off, at its very corner, a faint green glow of light, which Terra and Carbide would certainly be able to guess the source of by now.

HeatJellyHeatJelly (HeatJelly)

HeatJelly are floating, jellyfish-like viruses, that seem to simply float nonchalantly, yet are deceptively difficult to combat. Fortunately, their rarity ensures they they never appear before a Battle 6, and there are never more than 2 in a single battle. While their horizontal movement is terrible at best, they can easily adjust their altitude as needed. By default, however, they tend to hover a couple of feet above the ground. The exception to this is when they attack. HeatJelly attack by launching large waves of magma at enemies The attack cycle of HeatJelly is 2 actions long. It requires one action to charge before firing. If they are stunned or otherwise temporarily disabled, they resume their attack cycle where it was halted once the stun wears off. When they attack, they drop to the ground in order to pump out as much liquid as possible. This allows them to harness the power of certain kinds of terrain to boost their attacks, but it also makes them immobile and vulnerable to ground-based attacks for the duration.

"... Whoops," muttered Terra, as she gingerly hopped from slab to slab of a giant field of flat stone slabs.

"I thought you were going to leave, Terra?" asked Scarlet.

"... I only mentioned wanting to walk back to the entrance," she replied, hopping over another gap between the slabs just as it spewed out a powerful jet of steam. "Whoa!" exclaimed Carbide, holding on to Terra's back for dear life as they did so. The steam vents were far and few in between on the sandy spots, but thus far they were able to avoid all of them, most likely thanks to Terra's hidden senses. Their travels didn't go uninterrupted for too long, however, as they started to be surrounded by skeletons and volcano monsters and jellyfish galore.

"Heads up, Terra, I don't think we can go with the usual route on those skeletons. From what I've read, they have recovery methods, so we'll need to take them out with one good hit," said Scarlet, who began queuing up chips on her screen as she spoke.

"... We'll proceed on your chips, then," said Terra, as the first batch of chips appeared. Or didn't, as it were, since the first few were simply defensive chips. With Carbide raising her self-made shield, Terra raised two of her own, with the AntiFire chip manifesting as a glowing red rune under her feet, and a sturdy iron tower shield swirling to life around her left arm. She raised the tower shield to bear in front of her as Carbide whistled in response, as naturally, her rather small buckler-type didn't quite match up to the sturdily constructed battlechip-type variant.

"Gotta get me one of those, too," said the diminutive fighter, getting ready to use her own shield for Terra. Things then proceeded rapidly, with Terra marking her spot on the stone slab that she had found herself on by widening her stance. The red rune under her feet glowed in response, as a microscopic crack appeared underneath two of the skeletons. The crack in the slab proceeded to belch out an impressive wall of pyrotechnics, thoroughly roasting any bones that would happen to have perched themselves above it. Slightly nearer to her, the skeleton sitting to Terra's left would also be receiving a surprise of its own, with an electrical current snaking towards it ever so slowly to give anything in its path a few nasty million volts.

"And this one for good measure..." muttered Scarlet, sending in the last bit of insurance to Terra. The last attack manifested in the form of a tiny green serpent, which coiled around in front of Terra, tentatively waiting for her to give it the go signal. Still, she held it judiciously in reserve, waiting to see if any of the Skarabs had survived her attacks, before unleashing its grassy might.

After quickly summing up their options, Terra prepared herself to meet and counter incoming attacks, while Carbide was ready to defend. In the time it took them to prepare the three Skarab viruses all launched spinning bones in their rough direction. Rough, because only one of the three bones was remotely on target at all. Carbide leapt up to catch the projectile on her shield before Terra's own more masterful defences could be put to the test, but the concussive recoil of the bone striking her shield left the little SP momentarily dazed and confused. The other two bones curved on their spinning paths and began to return.

After the other two projectiles flew past, Terra retaliated with fire for one, and lightning for another, but her final attempt saw the eagerly released serpent shoot past the remaining bone virus without connecting. It circled back trying to reach it again, but ran out of terrain-changing energy before it could make another pass. The Jelly, as Terra and Carbide would have been able to predict by now, started by rising higher and drawing in energy, while the Volcano started to launch a flaming eruption towards the duo, only to have the heat drawn in by Terra's countermeasure, and turned back on it in a roaring inferno that charred the virus from the net.

"Just a few more to go," said Scarlet, the screen in front of her pinging multiple times within her rapid operation through the chip screen.

"Geh!" blurted out Carbide, as the spinning bone struck up against the shield, causing it to knock up against her head. Her vision began to spin as Terra hopped over to the spot vacated by the Volcano virus, thanks to its earlier implosion, while making sure her tower shield was still pointed towards the still-spinning bones. As soon as her brown boots touched down on the molten earth, their defenses were restored, with a dim red glow washing over both of them, and a crimson carapace building up under Terra's leotard. However, the carapace continued to build itself up to Terra's arms, forming a large barrel that continued to build itself up to a couple of feet long beyond her free hand.

"Bwuh? Wha's goin' on?" muttered Carbide.

Heedless of her support's addled quips, Terra leveled the cannon towards the HeatJelly, with the weapon whirring to life as it absorbed the energy from her barrier. Brief moments passed before it expelled its charge, a deep red ball of energy launched upwards towards the floating virus. The barrel then rotated, clicking into what appeared to be another charge. Her target shifted over to the cross-legged Skarab, and the cannon yawned to life once again, this time with a deep red glow akin to that of the lava beneath her feet.

The ball of energy this time was much brighter, a testament to its increase in potency. Unfortunately, with the second shot, the cannon on Terra's arm swiftly disintegrated, leaving her without much else to use. "Just a moment," she then heard over the voice link, followed by two beeps in the background. Right on cue, her trusty Bandcoon companion leapt to attention at her feet, standing tall on its hind legs and saluting its master.

However, Terra felt no more chips arrive in her queue, causing her to tilt her head in slight confusion. Her unspoken concerns were answered soon, when the Bandcoon took out a small datasphere from inside its fur, and tossed it towards the ground. It then leapt up in the air and kicked its tiny legs around in a spin, upon which two chunks of earth were launched in rapid succession towards the Jellyfish virus. Craftily enough, it was also riding on one of the chunks. Surfing on kinetic energy, it reached its tiny thieving paws out, hoping to snag something nice with them.

[Ca.1-2] Act: Mumble meaninglessly: Filler RP
With only a few viruses left to clean up, and her SP currently in an adorable state of confusion, Terra skipped over to the small pool of lava behind her, moving past the mystery data embedded in the ground and crossing the sand in order to let her planar protectives reassert themselves. that done, she made her first attack on the HeatJelly that was right in front of her now, angling up to shoot it with her empowered attack. Just as she fired the shot, however, the Jelly dropped suddenly to the ground, avoiding her efforts as it pumped out a thick wall of lava in her direction.

Caught off guard for a moment, Terra's efforts at avoiding the wave of lava were a bit too slow, but as she took the brunt of the wave against her freshly formed barrier, it was probably a good thing — the Mystery Data in the crack in the ground just behind her was spared the Jelly's molten wrath.

Shrugging off the assault, Terra's next target was the remaining bone virus, just winding up to launch another bone her way. Her shot struck it just before it could, and it collapsed, beginning to disintegrate rapidly. the other two bones that had been curving back towards her make their second passes as she fired; one missed a second time, while the other broke the last strands of her barrier, but had no other effect thanks to the status protection her shield provided.

The trusty Bandcoon had control of Terra's next chip, though it struggled to keep good control of the two chunks of net terrain as it rode one of them towards the HeatJelly. They were mostly made of loose sand, given where the data had activated, and the results were a little unpredictable. The Bandcoon itself leap free just before impact, landing on the HeatJelly and beginning to scrabble around for prizes. The two splashes of sand sprayed wide as they reached their target, and it was hard to tell exactly what was counting as a hit and what wasn't. The Jelly did get liberally covered in sand, however, and began to turn about in place once it rose from the ground, apparently unable to see where its foes had gone.

"... Scarlet, swords!"
"On it!"

With the hostile enemy count reduced to one, Terra called out to her operator for some backup, as she crouched slightly in preparation. Scarlet's response was prompt, and her Navi took action. The fiery ground beneath her lit up, before Terra vanished into it in a wisp of light. Almost instantaneously, she re-materialized atop the Jellyfish virus, joining up with the Bandcoon she had sent up, which gladly greeted her arrival with a squeak. The red carapace under Terra's leotard was already disintegrating, having been disconnected from its power source. Still, she managed to make good use of it by forcing all of the material into her arm, shaping it into a short red gladius of sorts. A sharp exhale followed, before she began to strike repeatedly at the Jellyfish, with her flanking ambush giving her the advantage of surprise.

"Uuuuugh, that smarts," said Carbide, who had been left behind on the lava, her Navi off carving up giant red jellyfish. She looked around to see whether anything else warranted attention - and indeed there was. "Ooh, there's something!" she said, skipping over to where the green Mystery Data crystal was hiding in the crack under the slabs, and reaching down towards it to see if it had anything interesting.

[Ca.1-2] Act: Examine and open GMD: RP
The HeatJelly began to rise into the air and charge its attack as Terra teleported above it and went to town with sharp swords. The virus was diced to ribbons. Then Carbide went and opened the GMD.

Unfortunately it was no reward at all, but a beady-eyed mimic. It laughed as it summoned a whole bunch of viruses. Two viruses with swords for arms appeared in the sand. A cloaked virus with a wide-brimmed hat appeared on a furnace vent. A large virus with a hammer and a virus with flaming fists appeared on the line of grass.

Also there was another HeatJelly. It popped up next to Terra on the Lava. Floating over the corpse of the previous HeatJelly.

If Terra and Carbide were going to claim that reward that the GMD held, they would have to pry it from their cold, dead, data ports.

Landing on the ground after having eviscerated the HeatJelly with her rocky blade, Terra smoothly rolled to a stop, just as Carbide touched the data crystal. The Bandcoon landed neatly next to her as well, peeking into the same crack to see what secrets it held. However, when the crystal decrypted itself to reveal a plume of black smoke, and the sound of maniacal laughing started emanating from the crack in the floor, the Bandcoon yelped, dropping its spoils as it fled the scene. When the smoke cleared, it was nowhere to be found, and the crystal was now above ground, along with a host of freshly summoned viruses.

Carbide felt a gloved hand grab her shoulder, and turned around to meet Terra's face, framed with an incomprehensible smile. "Uh... oops?" she said, grinning sheepishly.

"... Wait for me in the PET, okay?" said Terra. Before Carbide could get a word in edgewise, the SP's body turned into a translucent image, and promptly vanished. Standing up, she brandished the shield in her hand, having discarded the short blade in her other hand earlier. A dim red glow appeared to envelop her as her defenses started back up. Taking a deep breath, she allowed herself to relax, visualizing the area about her in her mind. Through her battle processes, a set of familiar battlechips started coming in one by one.

"There we go... Any reason you sent back Carbide? She seems pretty confused about it," said Scarlet, reconfirming the chips that she had sent.

Terra blinked, before tilting her head slightly in thought. "... Sorry, needed some time to think. I'll be heading back to the PET soon myself," she said, looking down at her hand. A small purple energy ball had gathered there, slowly increasing in size as time went on. Then, looking upwards, she saw yet another red Jellyfish, risen from the corpse of the one she had just torn apart. She lightly tossed the purple ball in her hand, which drifted up towards it lazily.

The atmosphere in the battlefield suddenly became heavier, as a powerful gravitational force slammed down on everything, pinning them to the ground. Simultaneously, the lava pool beneath Terra's feet began to widen rapidly, with bits of earth being sucked into the melting red rocks from the sudden gravitational shift. The ground then began to vibrate, with its intensity rapidly increasing, until finally, the cracks in the ground yawned open, revealing lava veins all over the area. The vibration crested at a crescendo, graduating into a full-blown earthquake as the lava veins erupted with great force.

Terra stood in the middle of it all, her stance resolute as the eruptions happened about her, with her "body armor" slowly beginning to build itself back up as the earthquake began to die down.

Seeing the fresh wave of viral enemies emerge in response to the Mimic pouncing on carbide's attempt to open it, Terra retained a somewhat distracted look in her eye and calmly sent the confused SP home. Truthfully, she didn't seem to be paying too much attention to the foes arrayed around her; the elementalist navi apparently had her mind elsewhere. The whomper dropped in to blow a stream of fire over her, trying to capitalise on her distraction, but it merely washed over her barrier, barely seeming to scratch it. It also spread the lava pool beneath her further, and Terra continued with her almost absent minded clean up, first slamming all of the viruses down into the ground hard, then setting the magma bubbling.

The whomper crashed down first, closest to her, and the HeatJelly that had been trying to rise up to charge was also brought down into the lava with a splat. The Mimic drew in on itself, its mist covering the crystal facets with a barrier of its own, but the first wave washed it away again, along with a good number of the other viruses who failed to avoid the crash of molten rock. the two Zemon had picked themselves up and moved in to attack just before the wave broke over them, but even between their flurry of slashes, they only managed to dissipate her outer barrier.

Elsewhere, some viruses survived and some didn't, Terra wasn't really paying attention as the second wave rumbled. It rolled outwards, burning through more of those that remained, and, in a moment of perfect timing, the Champy warped through it, swinging quickly. One blow went wide and the other hammered without effect on Terra's shield, before the third wave obliterated it, and everything else that remained on the field. When the lava settled, An incorporeal representation of the data crystal that the mimic had sprung from remained, and began to unpack itself. Chip data, turned out to be the result, which Terra was able to collect along with her other spoils at last; perhaps some of those might hold her attention in a way that none of the second wave of viruses had even remotely managed.

With the area cleared of viruses, Terra scouted the vicinity for a spell before she materialized something in her hand -- a piece of paper detailing the Jellyfish that she had just deleted seven of. Bringing her hand up to her ear, she started talking as she began to collecting the spoils of battle. "Scarlet, do you know where this 'bounty' thing that Carbide got came from?"

"Netfrica, I think," came the reply. "It's a relatively new setup. There should be a direct link nearby."

As fate dictated, in a small branch in the road ahead lay a small teleportation pad, with a tiny wooden sign nailed to the ground next to it. Scratched onto the sign was "Bounty Shop" written in scrawled writing. "I think I see it, I'll head in," said Terra, finishing up her gathering and heading towards the telepad.
