To Hell with this

"Kindness is relative," Pianissimo muttered, letting his eyes follow the retreating form of the cleric navi.

Duke, meanwhile, stared incredulously at the PET display as the battle data shifted do show that the fight had ended. In particular, his gaze was drawn to a line under the status of the rapidly distancing cleric navi. "Get: TFO?!"

"Something wrong, Duke?" Pianissimo asked.

"No, nothing. Just the status display being weird. Anyway, I think you should chase after her."

Duke's comment earned him a short pause, before his navi responded with a simple "Why?"

"Something I noticed during the battle. Not a single attack hit her. In fact, the only one that would have was blocked by something. Yet her HP reading dropped 20 points over the course of the fight." He sighed, double-checking the display. "Anyway, it's pretty obvious why she was in such a hurry, and we actually have defensive capabilities now, so I think you should chase after her."

"It's none of our business," Pianissimo replied, staring after her. At this point, it would take luck to catch up before she either reached her targets or was stalled again anyway. "I probably shouldn't have involved myself in the fight in the first place."

"Fine," Duke conceded. "In that case, I'm giving you an assignment, and that assignment is to assist that navi in any way necessary until she has recovered what was lost and her status returns to normal. Is your objective clear?"

Pianissimo stared so that Duke could see him, then adjusted the brightness of his helmet's eyepieces so his eyes were clearly visible, revealing a look that stated 'you have got to be kidding me'. Nonetheless, he let a sigh escape his lips, then took off after the female navi.
Pianissimo's reluctant delay in following the female Navi granted her a generous lead in the beginning, yet his longer stride was allowing him to slowly catch up. He had actually passed the large lava pool he'd seen in the distance, and had also exited the volcanic cavern too boot. He now found himself just outside of the cave, and standing on the slopes of a cyberspace volcano. A relatively small one, apparently... One need only look around from this relatively low vantage to see far larger red-rimmed mountains of fire. The hellscape stretched before him, scarred with rivers of lava, bubbling lakes of the same, and short erupting volcanic craters. Everything in view was cracked from frequent earthquakes, covered in ash and sand, or submerged in liquid fire.

Obviously, no sane Net Police sweeper squads patrolled this network (they did wish to live, after all), as the viruses off in the distance appeared to be quite numerous. Still, none of them were close by.

The sounds of battle made their way up the shallow slope to Pianissimo's ears. Looking down at the valley between this volcano and another, much larger volcano, Pianissimo could see the female cleric surrounded by four shadowy forms. Beyond her and the group of viruses was another cave entrance. But, before he could move to assist her, as Duke had ordered him to do, a pack of SpikeyEX's burst from the cave he'd just exited, and began fanning out to attack him as a pack...

((Battle 4: BEGIN!))
Pianissimo barely had time to marvel at the vastness of the area he had just walked into before he caught sight of the shadows beginning to surround the cleric navi in the distance. He knew that he would be able to handle them with relative ease, but what about the one he had been charged to assist? So far, all he had seen her do was fight using the weapons of her opponents and the environment itself. While it had been a sound strategy against those navis, and one he would have to try out himself sometime, but against viruses...as far as he knew, most virus weapons were integrated into their program, and thus much more difficult, if not impossible to steal.

As he pondered this however, he heard the snarl of wolves from behind.

Sure enough, as he turned his head, he could see a pack of spikey viruses approaching from the cave he had just vacated. Four of them in total, they had begun to fan out behind him. How unpleasant, he thought, acknowledging that no matter what he did about them, it would slow him down in some way. His arsenal of aqua chips was limited, and the best one he had would likely cause him to lose ground were he to stop and attack.

Turning forward again, his eyes rested on the bridge in front of him, spanning the length of the nearest river of flame. By all appearances, it wouldn't last longer than his crossing, if it was even that stable. If he could hold them there, it would allow him to take down all four while losing only minimal time...if he was lucky.

Pianissimo made no move to slow down as he reached the bridge, not stopping until he was on the other side of the lava river. That.. he thought, selecting some chips to request just in case, should be enough.

As the chip data was received, he extended one hand, allowing the first of it to appear before him. A large candle rose from the ground and ignited, sending a wave of regenerative energy through Pianissimo and, if he was lucky, the cleric navi as well. Turning around, Pianissimo tapped the air facing the bridge and a cross of red light spread from the spot until it formed a shield defending him in case any of the spikeys decided to go for ranged attacks.
___

1-4 + *: Tactical Movement: Approach and cross bridge
5. Candle1: 100HP Object, grant Regen to self and allies
6. Guard2 facing spikeys: Reflect up to 120 damage of next attack
As Pianissimo dashes across the bridge, a fireball burns past his head a little closer than any Navi would have liked. Ahead, he could see the cleric ducking and dodging the attacks dished out by the shadowy viruses, but not making any attempts to return their assaults. Before he could contemplate her unarmed approach further a second fireball actually hit him.

He summoned his Candle1 as he spun around to bring up a Guard2 in defense. This allowed him to see the bridge he'd crossed collapse into the lava, taking a SpikeyEX with it. However, one of the remaining Spikeys struck the shield with yet another fireball, and was struck in return by the shield's counter-beam.

The liberal use of fire had turned a good portion of this side of the river into Glass...

Pianissimo now stood just opposite the pack of spikeys. The sand and ash beneath him had melted and fused together into black glass, scorched by the fires of several heated attacks. What bothered him, however, was how fast they had caught up to him.

No time, he thought, requesting an aquasword chip. No time to try and outwit them, they're too close.

His katana glowed blue within seconds, surrounded by a veil of water and mist. He would only have a few seconds before being hit from all sides, so he would have to make the most of it.

Stepping forward, he executed two slashes in quick succession, each catching the middle wolf virus and one other in its intended arc. He ducked to the ground afterwards, then spun the blade around and swept it at all three...

Pianissimo's quick reaction time barely saves his skin as the first SpikeyEX leaps forward, trying to knock the Navi over, and is cut down mid-air. The second is similarly struck down by his continued sword combination. The third SpikeyEX manages to belch a fireball at the assassin, but misses as he ducks it. Pianissimo's rising spin cut slays the third SpikeyEX... Just in time for the fourth to climb back out of the lava and charge a fireball to launch at him....

Behind him, he can hear the Cleric shuffling about, trying to evade the attacks of the shadow viruses surrounding her.

Amazingly, his blitz attack worked. Quick action had served well as the watery blade cut effortlessly through the wolf pack. "Send the areagrab," Pianissimo called to Duke, watching the fourth, and final spikey scramble its way back out of the river.

And immediately prepare to launch a fireball.

He had hoped to use the areagrab to close the distance between him and the cleric navi, but necessity now compelled him to use it for the more immediate problem.

Before the fireball could be launched, Pianissimo vanished. Less than a second later, he reappeared next to it, and immediately delivered a downward slash at the creature's neck. Almost as soon as he finished the swing, he was away again, attempting to finish closing the distance between himself and the cleric navi.

Pianissimo vanishes, leaving only the Cleric and the Shadows within it's view. He re-appears next to it, and lashes out at it as it belches a fireball off into the distance. The sword strike connects, deleting the SpikeyEX as it cleaves clean through.

As Pianissimo turns to dash off towards the other 4 Viruses and the Navi they surround... He caught sight of the black clad female Navi dodging the fireball launched by the SpikeyEX, then ducking a Nightmare's sword slash by falling over. As he advanced towards them, he watched as she managed to avoid a falling ax attack from a Shadow by rolling out of the way.

The sand didn't seem to hamper her at all as she jumped back up on her feet and resumed a... useless unarmed fighting stance. That's when another Shadow teleported beside her, in the shape of a sword, and stabbed at her. The attack almost looked as if it had connected, but instead of her reacting to it normally, she vanished. A moment later, she appeared behind the sword-form shadow, and dove desperately for the hilt of the blade. She appeared to have managed the feat, her eyes lighting up as her hands closed around----

No luck. The cleric's hands passed through the virus harmlessly. She face-planted into the sand as her recovery move from the jump assumed she had the sword as a counter weight... and she didn't. She propped herself up, and muttered something most un-lady-like at her failure that Pianissimo didn't quite catch.

Well, that's not going to do much good, is it? Pianissimo thought as he finally approached the shadow viruses. Looks like I'll have to support her after all.

Pianissimo made his usual selection, this time also selecting an extra sword chip to pass off.

As these were sent, the assassin once again used his own shadow as a point to fade into, sinking into the ground as the small patch of darkness swallowed his body. It rippled as his head passed through, then shrank into nothing. Seconds later, he reappeared, near the farther of the two armed shadows, but hopefully not in a position that he would land on the cleric. His katana whipped forward, black against black as he thrust it at the nightmare virus's head.

Drawing it away, he spread his arms, activating both chips he had requested at once. Enveloping his katana was now an orange aura, much wider than the blade itself. Appearing in his left hand, a relatively thin, azure-bladed longsword. The second blade pulsed lightly, before Pianissimo tossed it, blade down, into the sand next to the cleric navi.

Pushing his feet against the sand and hoping it would create enough of a surface to kick off of without getting him stuck, he then dashed towards the other Nightmare. Bringing the wideblade-enhanced katana around, he swung it hard at the shadow creature, hoping to bisect it.

Pianissimo heard a surprised gasp as he literally leaped out of the Cleric's shadow (directly in front of her), stepped forward, and stabbed his blade clean through the Nightmare that had been about to take a swing at the black-clad female. The virus seemed to fade out of existence, its shadowy form evaporating into the air as the sword dealt it a fatal blow.

As Pianissimo withdrew the black blade from the slain virus, and spread his arms out, his body reverted from a pitch black shadow to his normal coloration. He turned as he channeled the Wideblade data into his katana and summoned the Sword (in the form on a glowing blue longsword) in his other hand, only to see the cleric sitting on her legs, her expression shocked, and with her arm raised and bent across her face as if she expected him to strike at her. His leaping out of her shadow and slaying of a virus had obviously rattled her a bit, as she sat there staring at him with an expression that all but shouted 'what are you?!' for the Cleric. As Pianisiimo threw the sword into the sand next to her, he saw recognition begin to flicker across the other Navi's face, her guarding arm lowering somewhat... "Y-you?" She sounded genuinely surprised.

Pianissimo didn't stop to respond, and turned towards the other Nightmare. He ran towards the virus, the sand slowing his movement somewhat. The virus, however, obliged him by teleporting in front of him, and preparing to swing at him. Pianissimo was just a hair faster on the draw, and connected with the target first, causing it to fade out of existence as the previous virus had.

His foe dispatched, Pianissimo turned to see how the other Navi was faring, and caught sight of one virus already fading into oblivion. The Cleric sidestepped the second, and brought her borrowed blade flashing upwards to slice through the ax-form of the second, using her movement as a guide for the rising slash. She then planted her other foot on the ground at an angle, and used it to spin herself back around to face her victim, sword already returning to a guard position across her body as she turned. When she saw her foe wouldn't require a second strike, she allowed her guard to drop, her sword arm to falling to her side.

The viruses had been defeated.

As the last shadow virus faded, the orange glow of Pianissimo's wideblade went out, leaving only his katana. The candle burned into nothing as well, though it had all in all been rather useless for what he had tried to do with it.

Sheathing his weapon, the assassin glanced over at the cleric navi. "You okay?" he asked, rather simply.
As the battle ended, and Pianissimo's battle routines shut off, the Sword he'd given to the Cleric lost resolution and disappeared as well. The Cleric sighed as she held the sword before her and watched the blade vanish, obviously wishing it hadn't. When Pianissimo spoke to her, she turned and looked back in his direction... She responded to his question with an equally simple "Aye." as she allowed her now empty hand to fall back to her side. "T'wasn't a problem with an edge at hand."

She seemed torn for a moment, looking back and forth between the entrance to the cave and Pianissimo, eventually turning towards the cave entrance. It almost seemed as if she was about to walk away again when she hesitated, and turned her head to look back at Pianissimo "I have no right to ask this of you, but circumstances demand otherwise...." she began cryptically, as she completely turned to face him. "Wouldst th... " She stopped herself immediately, and coughed as if to clear her throat before she reluctantly started again, her speaking mannerisms completely different this time. "Pardon, but could you assist me in retrieving that which was stolen from me? Although...." She closed her eyes before she continued. "I have nothing to offer you as payment in return." Her shoulders slumped as she finished speaking.

"I suppose I don't have much choice either way," Pianissimo responded, bowing his head. "My operator has already given me orders to do so."

Orders aside, his initial objection to doing so in the first place had been that it was none of his business. Now that the navi had specifically asked for assistance, however, he had been drawn in even if Duke were to take back the order.
Her eyes opened in surprise when Pianissimo said he'd accompany her. She arched an eyebrow at the mention of his orders... "Did he now? I suppose I owe your Operator my thanks, too." She sounded rather pleased as she returned Pianissimo's earlier bowing motion. She straightened up and said "Shall we away, good Sir?" with a wave of her arm to indicate the entrance to the cave. She then turned, and started in.

Pianissimo didn't respond, merely followed. His footsteps barely made any sound as he walked, leaving the cleric only to trust he was following as the assassin entered the cave as well.
A short time later, Pianissimo enters a large stone underground chamber. The entrance he'd just come through was halfway along the near wall, and another exit could be seen in the far left corner along the far wall. Oozing down the textured corners of the cavern were rivers of molten rock. Bars of steel had been set up around the lava flows to prevent particularly uncoordinated Navis from somehow winding up incinerated in the deadly heat. It was obvious that the floor was suspended above a lake of the magma, as one needed only look down to see it through the occasional crack in the floor (which also explained why it was ridiculously hot in the room).

However, the room also featured several Navis, all bearing the same red-and-black torso markings of the group Pianissimo had ambushed earlier. This lot was a ragtag bunch indeed, consisting purely of generic Navis with some of the old Style customizations applied to their frameworks. Three of them resembled black-and-red NormalNavis with an arm-mounted sword instead of a buster. The middle of the three was also lightly armored, and better armed than the others. In the center of the room was a large, heavy-build rust-colored NormalNavi with large, powerful arms the size of tree-trunks, and a black visor over its eyes. Another was a red-colored HeelNavi; in the place of its left arm was a vulcan-esque weapon, and a scope sat in the socket was supposed to have held its left eye. The one near the back was a red-colored generic GuardNavi with shield projectors attached to its forearms. The Navi behind it was another NormalNavi with a mix of pink and red for color, and a tattered red scarf wrapped around its neck. And all were apparently armed with whatever they could find.

"It's the swordsman!" the GunnerNavi shouted. "The swordsman's here!"

"Delete that Navi." Commanded the GuardNavi as it took up a defensive position before the unarmed Navi behind it. As the others spread out, obviously clearing for action, he added "My Op offers a purse of 25,000 Zenny to whomever brings that demon down."

"We will crush them." announced the super-sized GigasNavi in an echoing bass as it motioned to someone behind it. As it began its looming advance, the SwordNavis sprinted around it, blades ready. The Navi Pianissimo had seen standing silently in the back shrank back behind the Guard Navi, its back to the wall, and vanished from sight. Meanwhile, the GuradNavi brought up a Shield before him from one of his arm projectors, further obscuring his view of them. The Gunner took off running to one side, and slapped a chip-clip into his vulcan-arm....

The Cleric, who had been standing silently beside Pianissimo, finally spoke. Her voice was only just loud enough for him to make out her words.

"Twenty-five thousand.... I daresay a sword in the right hands holds worth beyond their limited imagination." She smiled, apparently amused. "Their ignorance is criminal. Shall we educate them, good Sir?"

More of the same, huh?

Pianissimo surveyed the ragtag batch of navis that had been hiding in the room, curious. All bearing the same marking, but still a group thrown together, likely with little training. Three swordfighters, a gunner, one with massive arms, a defender, and...a normal one? I'll be that one's the weak link. Unknown power, but HP readings indicate he's likely the most fragile. That and the defender is guarding him... Even before knowing for sure their intentions, he was analyzing them, looking for the weakness he believed he had just found.

"It's the swordsman! The swordsman's here!"
"Delete that Navi. My Op offers a purse of 25,000 Zenny to whomever brings that demon down."

It seemed to the assassin that one question had been answered. Twenty-five thousand...a rather pathetic amount. The cleric's words were, after all, correct. Skill with a blade was not a measure to fit a monetary equivalent to. Either it was enough, and priceless, or not enough, and worthless. "We shall," he responded, his own voice only projected enough that the cleric could hear. A thin longsword with an azure, glowing blade appeared in his off hand. "Take this if you want. I'm going to hit them from behind...we'll attack from both sides."

Pianissimo tossed the sword into the air above him...

...and then vanished from under it.

Just below the ceiling on the far side of the room, the assassin reappeared, falling just short of allowing his helmet to scrape. Directly above, perfect, he thought, drawing one hand back to the wall. Claws extended from it, digging into the material enough to, at the very least, slow his descent. In the other hand, a small metal sphere appeared, with three explosive caps on the surface. He let it roll out of his hand, where it would land on the head of the unarmed navi.

Following this up, he reached into the folds of his scarf and extracted a trio of ninja throwing knives. Rather than simply letting these fall, however, he slung these downward, knowing there wasn't enough room to kill a target merely by dropping them. He then released his hold on the wall by cancelling the RageClaw, then attempted to guide himself to a landing between the guard navi and his previous target. As he landed, he drew his katana, activating a WideSword chip as he brought it around in a spinning slash.
___

1. Toss sword chip to Cleric Navi
2. Areagrab above SummonerNavi (high enough so Pianissimo's helmet falls just short of scratching the ceiling)
3. Rageclaw wall to slow descent
4. Drop energybomb on SummonerNavi's head (40x3)
5. Throw Kunai1 at SummonerNavi's head (30x3)
*Tac Movement: let go/attempt to direct self to land between summoner and guard navis
6. Swing Widesword in a circle while landing (80 to summoner and guard)
As Pianissimo summoned the spare Sword in his off-hand, the Cleric's eyes were instantly drawn to it. A smile crept across her face as he shared his game plan with her. He tossed the blade into the air and vanished just as the sword Navis entered melee range....

Pianissimo reappeared above the Summoner Navi, equipped a RageClaw, and struck at the wall, digging his claws into it to slow his descent. Sure enough, the trick worked, and somewhat better than planned. When the claw all but anchored itself in place, Pianissimo wound up dropping and slamming against the wal. He wound up hanging from it while it jerkily carved it's way down the wall in fits and starts through the softer than expected rock. He eventually managed to push away from the wall with his legs, finally adjusting to the unexpected to a degree.... He couldn't use his other hand for this task, as it held a rather dangerous explosive within its grasp.

The Navi below him had not been idle during those few precious moments, and managed to conjure up a couple of RockCubes in the middle of the room by its much larger associate. It did its job efficiently, already beginning to summon yet another object by the time Pianissimo regained his balance. The GuardNavi was actively looking about, obviously trying to spot the assassin, but hadn'e managed it quite yet....

Pianissimo, sticking to the original plan, simply dropped the bomb on the Navi. It had no idea the attack was coming until it landed on the Navi's head, and promptly exploded. The trio of spherical energy blasts completely enveloped the Summoner, and startled a surprised yell from the GuardNavi, who spun around to face the new threat out of reflex. Before either of them could do anything meaningful to stop him, Pianissimo drew a trio of Kunai, and turned the Summoner into a human dart-board.

As the SummonerNavi collapsed, its body beginning to disintegrate into deletion, Pianissimo dropped to the floor, banishing his Rageclaw in order to do so, and prepared to draw his blade....

The GuardNavi didn't let him.

Pianissimo collided with the GuardNavi's shield as the latter braced against the back of it and surged forward to tackle the assassin. Pianissimo was slammed bodily against the wall, but was spared any serious injury by his armor. As the GuardNavi backed away slightly, the assassin drew his blade....

As he squared off against the GuardNavi, a tiny dot of intensely focused red light shone from somewhere, directly into Pianissimo's right eye for a moment....

Crap, Pianissimo thought, noticing the light. Random red lights in the eyes on the battlefield could only mean one of two things: distractions or targeting. Either way, not reacting would turn out very bad for him. Abandoning the guardnavi for the moment and kicking off from the ground, he dashed to the left, losing the edge of having all the navis between himself and the cleric. It was unfortunate, but easily rectifiable. All he would have to do is make the guard navi his next target and take him out quickly.

Silently, he wished he hadn't already used the rageclaw chip. It would have made the rest of this battle a bit easier.

"Duke, I've got a defending navi here that I'm going to need to take out fairly quickly. Advice?" he said over a private channel.

The PET communications crackled to life as his operator answered. "Only thing we have to break through shields is that Magnum we got from forcing Havoc to retreat," he said, flipping the chip over in his hand. "Seems a bit out of your field of expertise, but..."

Wonderful. Joy. Let the happy begin. These thoughts and more passed through Pianissimo's head, each more thoroughly drenched in sarcasm than the last. As practical a fighter as he was, using a massive cannon like that went completely against his fighting style. If any of the other fighters were still looking for him rather than being distracted by the swordswoman, they certainly wouldn't be looking for much larger. Yet at the same time, it would tear through his target's shield and create an advantage for later. An advantage that would allow him to strike several points on the battlefield at once.

Not to mention having an easy way to erase the biggest reason to not do it other than not liking to resort to huge guns.

Instead of continuing to the left, the assassin jumped back up the wall, slicing through the air as he switched his sword arm. The rushing of sound leaving the room was heard, then, as he dug his weapon into the wall to brace himself, nothing.

Silence.

His gaze went from the defending navi nearby to the heavy-armed navi ahead. If he was designed as such for the reason Pianissimo thought he was, the two rockcubes the unassuming summoner had managed to conjure could be a problem. But hitting him directly was a bad idea. Raising his right hand, Pianissimo focused the just-sent Magnum data into it. Four arm cannon sections appeared surrounding his arm, then closed around it, creating an oversized, three-barrel gun.

Scoping out his targets, he let one stray thought enter his mind.

Let's not do this again.

Two shots erupted from the bores. One targeted the guard navi, the other would, if he was lucky, smash through the ground directly behind the gigas navi. Taking a second to observe the status of the rest of the battlefield, Pianissimo pulled the blade out and let himself fall again.

I'm a bit open here now... he thought, depressing the symbol on his left wrist and requesting a barrier. The protective bubble spread from his wrist, enveloping his body.

Pianissimo dodged to the left, a cannon shell exploding in the space he'd just previously occupied confirming one of his theories about the light. He followed up his evasive maneuver with an upwards leap as he heard someone beyond the GuardNavi shout frustratedly in his direction. On his way up, Pianissimo activated his signature move, Enjoy the Silence, which both killed all sound in his vicinity and flooded his systems with a surge of reserve power. At the apex of his jump, he then stabbed his sword into the soft rock as an anchor, and managed to brace himself halfway up the wall.

However, the silence was a double edged sword, as a series of countless staccato flashes from below... almost directly below... accompanied a trio of medium caliber bullet impacts into his torso. He looked down to see the GuardNavi eject a clip from his custom pistol weapon, apparently a full-auto pistol with an extended clip and a curved blade for close combat, and started to reach for another.

Pianissimo then shifted his gaze outward towards the GigasNavi, just in time to see the big Navi heft a rockcube above his head with one hand in a not-unexpected yet still impressive display of strength. Pianissimo saw the Navi hurl the rockcube straight at the Cleric he'd partnered up with, who was fighting a pair of SwordNavis. She locked blades with one of the Navis, and the two spun about... It ended with the SwordNavi being clobbered by the flying cube, and the Cleric's (apparently stolen) LongSword being broken as the cube snapped the blade off.

Pianissimo then summoned the Magnum's heavy tri-barrel cannon, and looked back down at the panel behing the GigasNavi just in time to see a buster shot pass before him from left to right, and strike the wall about a foot to his left. As he charged the gun, a second buster shot from the same source connected, damaging his torso armor slightly, but did little else to faze him.

The Magnum fired.

The first shell blasted clean through the floor, and kept going while leaving a large jagged hole in it's wake. The heat from the pool of lava below warping the air above it as it all but rushed upwards through the newly created vent.

The second shell punched through the GuardNavi's shield as if it were made of wet paper, and shattered it like glass as it hit the Navi behind it. The round exploded, engulfing the Navi in flames and smashing the floor with a concussion blast strong enough to crack it.

Pianissimo banished the cannon, pulled the Widesword from the wall, and dropped to the floor. He noted that the sword hadn't fared well being used as an anchor to support his weight as he landed. He then activated a Barrier, just in case, as he caught a fleeting glimpse of the Cleric, who seemed to be a little worse for wear....
