Eyes Closed

Rayner appeared in the Net in what first appeared to be a rather standard Jack-In breeze. At least it was standard until a large ball of electricity formed at the base and blasted outwards, leaving Rayner standing tall with the fluff around his neck ruffling and scarf swaying. The after effects of the explosion had barely ended when Rayner promptly started running forwards, looking for something to relieve his boredom.

(Searching for Encounter 1)
Rayner comes upon a large pathway of magnetic panels, flanked on each side by glass panels (showing all sorts of circuitry underneath). Defending the pathway were two machinegun-turret viruses and an electric capsule covered in a metal shell that floats above the magnetic pathway, drawing energy from it.

Rayner came to the path and gave the ground beneath his feet an experimental tap. He nodded in satisfaction at the terrain and then looked up to survey the opponents. The two Gunners shouldn't be too difficult, but the PulseBulb would prove difficult. He could hear Joan deliberately setting chips onto the table.

"Hey pretty lady, can I get a couple ships from you before you take your nap?" There was an exasperated sigh and the sound of chips clinking on the desktop was stopped.

"What do you want?"

"Our Cannons and the Guard1 chip would be wonderful. Thank you dear!" Joan scowled as she slotted in the chips, narrowing her eyes and then leaning back in her chair.

"Don't call me that." Rayner chuckled and raised his right arm, packets of chip information appeared as glowing white orbs that appeared and melted into the claw. The arm shifted into the form of a CannonDumb's barrel painted in yellow and black. Twin sets of targeting circles appeared in each eye, the distance between the circles narrowing and widening as the distance between Navi and the tops of the pillars was gauged. There was an audible whirr and then a click and the targeting circles stopped and tightened. There was a louder click in the gun and the gun barked a sharp report. Light flashed from the barrel and a large slug spun on its way towards the first Gunner.

Rayner twisted at the waist and moved his arms over a set pace. The targeting circles in his eyes revolved once more and targeted on the second Gunner. It only took a moment of focus this time and the cannon barked again. Rayner took a half step back as his arm became engulfed in chip data. This time the data grew cross-wise to his arm, building into a large riot shield with rounded edges. Matte grey in color it featured black edging and a large matte yellow cross in the lower center. Rayner held his riot shield in front of him and looked out the small shield at the PulseBulb. A pair of eyebrows appeared over his eyes and he winked teasingly at the virus to goad it into attacking.

Rayner once more proves the humble CannonDumb line proud, his initial shot slamming right through the fragile support columns holding the Gunner's giant turret up. The resulting explosion sets the neighbouring virus into a mad panic, sending its twin machine-guns into a shooting frenzy. The ground all around Rayner is peppered with ricochets and other wacky noises...and not accomplishing even a single lucky shot before Rayner's second Cannon hits. Critical existence failure sets in immediately, and the two Gunners are thusly deleted.

The Navi then sets up his riot shield, and grows a pair of eyebrows for the sole purpose of taunting. Needless to say, his audacity either impresses or infuriates the PulseBulb (hard to tell, really), and it dashes in with full intent of delivering a painful electric shock. Its nigh-impenetrable metal casing pops open, the satellite dish unfolds, and the electric pulse...rebounds right off the shield and back into its non-existent face. It shuts its case once again, retreats back to its Magnet terrain, and takes the time to bleep some manner of viral cuss at Rayner, hopping place in its anger.

Rayner kept his resolve despite all the crazy bouncing bullets and was rewarded. Apparently his opening call had been a good one, two of the three foes were ended and he had managed to inflict some damage to the last at least. He had a chuckle at what he assumed was a string of curses from the PulseBulb.

"Oi Joan, can I make a request or have you shut your eyes?"

"I'm resting. How many chips do you need?" Her voice sounded fainter than earlier, Rayner presumed she was leaning back in the chair now. Well he would just have to make the best of it.

"Two please." He could faintly hear a couple chips gently scraping as they were slid off the desk. The data hit and he felt a tingle of electricity along his spine that was accompanied by an odd buzz in his ears. The white light engulfed his arm, buzzing and flickering with graphical glitching. Two prongs bracketed a slot which crackled with electricity. Rayner took aim and waited for the PulseBulb to open up again. He'd blast the virus with a glitch-laden electrified disk as soon as the metal shell opened.

Rayner's arm glowed white and began to shift, rearranging itself into four claws of gleaming black and yellow. He ran didn't bother too much with dodging, he was just focusing on reaching his opponent's side.

Biding his time, Rayner waited on the hard-cased Bulb to try again. Infuriated at its failure the last time, the Bulb rushed up to him very quickly indeed, but, just as it opened its casing to blast the annoying navi, Rayner fed it a whole mouthful of electrical glitching pain. It still manages to fire off its sonic blast, but something strange seems to be happening to the virus as it does. The crown of its head tilts up, over, back... there's the sound of grinding parts and crunching gears from within, and the PulseBulb begins to emit a series of what can only be terrified shrieks. the sonar strike misses, flying upwards as the poor virus's whole body seems to begin reconfiguring itself in the most uncomfortable fashion. There are whirs and click, more crunches and the sounds of bending metal, before the process finally comes to a halt.

What has happened is quite amazing; All of the PulseBulb's delicate and sensitive parts are now full on display on the outside of the virus, while the hard metal shell has become internalised. The glitch seems to have, in quite a violent fashion, turned the whole virus inside out. It continues to make frantic, terrified sounds, beeping and squeaking madly, but for all that, seems to be very much still alive, and likely about to take this violation out on Rayner, if it can.

The navi readies his RageClaw in response. Those circuits look fragile.

Rayner was pleased to see his waiting paid off but the results were suprisingly disturbing, more than he had been aiming for. The Elec Navi grimaced and half-turned away from the virus. Sure the glitch was very helpful but for some reason this was worse than seeing Pyre's legs. Where that could be just a graphics problem, this was very obviously not the case.

"Uh, Rayner? You alright in there?" Joan sounded rather worried.

"Yeah, I'm... fine. Just had my plan work a little too well on the virus!" Rayner approached the virus quickly and eyed the internal bits on display, this was a rather unique opportunity to view the inner workings of a virus. The Navi snapped a few screenshots and moved around the PulseBody to get more angles in. Once he was behind the virus he lunged forwards, claw attempting to sever some important looking wires and hopefully take it out of commission.

Rewards: ElecPulse1, 300z
Rayner felt a little bad once he noticed the PulseBulb was trying to get away. Honestly though, even if he had let it run away it probably would have just been deleted by somebody else. The Elec Navi bent down to collect this new loot and then considered a new..difficulty.

"Heey Joan, I've got some chip data here that could sure use a new home on one of our blank chips. I don't suppose there's any way you could do me a favor and slot one in?" There was a load groan from his NetOp but he heard the sounds of her moving around.

"What part of 'I want to rest my eyes' don't you understand? Can't I just relax?" She whined, slotting in the blank chip and then setting the newly written chip with the jumble of other written chips on the table. Rayner put his hands on his hips.

"Hey, I didn't realize we were getting a new chip. You might as well set up the rest of the blank chips for easy access as well in case we find more. I'm sure you'll be able to handle that the same as slotting in the written ones." His voice went from stern to cheerful at the end in an attempt to encourage his NetOp to go along with it. He heard some muttering and then finally the sound of blank chips being dumped onto the table. He shook his head before turning to face the direction he had originally been travelling in and setting out once more. As he walked it occurred to Rayner that he was lucky to be an Elec type, the magnetic panels beneath his feet could have posed much more of a hindrance.

Having successfully passed his Artful Photography of Tortured Viruses 101, Rayner ventured deeper into the Dentech nets. The setting changed gradually, with the magnet panels forming themselves into more uniform lines, separated now by clear glass. In fact, it wasn't long before he was walking along the middle line of five long, straight strips of magnet panels, with nothing but glass between and to either side.

Just in front of him, a single trumpet-like virus was standing pride of place in the middle of the field and it began to glow as it blew a note to greet him. Up above, another layer of clear glass showed an assortment of musical notes, and as the Trumpy blew, all three of them jumped up, and crashed down, shattering through the ceiling to land variously about the field on Rayner's level. Come to think of it, the battlefield itself rather resembled a musical staff. If photography class was over... now, it was apparently time for Music.

Rayer was apparently picking off his electives first on this run. After a round of Photography mostly inspired by morbid curiosity, Rayner found himself in Music class!

The Elec Navi was fine watching the Trumpy, until the glass shattering above shook him from his attention. His attention was firmly on the new arrivals as they landed and he took a moment to appraise them. While they didn't appear hostile that probably wasn't going to last for long.

"Oi Joan, chips please." There was a grumble of assent and he heard two chips being scraped along the table's top before making their way into the PET. He sighed and shook his head as the data filtered in, forming around his arm. "With how spread out these guys are these two are almost useless.." He muttered quietly as the double barrels of a shotgun materialized. He'd have to make due.

Rayner began moving, carefully treading across glass and metal to line up his shot. His aiming reticules popped int existence, sweeping back and forth across the enemies as his targeting algorithms tried to map an aiming solution in the background programs of his very being. It was only a matter of angles, as long as the third point was movable one could always draw a line through two points. In this case he used the Trumpy as one end of the line, really more of a segment, and one of the Melodys as his midpoint. The reticules in his eyes flashed from blue to green and he fired quickly, twin flashes of light leaping from the barrels of his gun. It might be unlikely that he would hit both, but at least one of them would be hurting.

Once the Elec Navi had given his opening salvo he was quick to begin moving around the field, watching for the lit-up panels that heralded the dropping of the Melody viruses. The gun on his arm did not leave, it instead shifted slightly, vents forming higher up an discharging small wisps of flame and smoke from the loaded HeatShot chip.

Moving easily over the Glass and Magnet, Rayner isn't inhibited at all, though he slid a little on the glass. Unfortunately, the Melody notes, having dropped down, aren't quite so lucky. The magnet panels pull at them, and the glass makes them slide any time they touch ground. The one that landed directly on a magnet panel tries to bounce off again, but its base sticks tight, and all that happens is that it appears to wiggle about furiously. A clear musical note plays from all sides as it does.

A second bounces wildly towards Rayner... vaguely towards him, any way. Its first jump crates a second clear tone, lower than the first, as it lands on the glass between two lines, then another as it bounces a little higher, into the next gap. The third jump creates a tone, predictably between the two, as it lands quite close to Rayner, beside the first, but on the magnet strip it had jumped over before. This time it seems to stick and hold.

Meanwhile, Rayner himself makes a careful line up, just as the third Melody jumps at him. It lands just short, missing him, and creates another musical chime as it, too, gets stuck to a magnet line. The pretty note is interrupted by the less musical roar of his shotgun. Large and fat, and right in front of him, the note takes the full bore of the shotgun's pierce, but the distance is too great for any of it to reach the Trumpy at the back. For now, the Trumpy itself seems to be taking a breather, puffed out from its earlier playing.

Rayner was good at math! He just, hadn't considered the ramifications of a Melody jumping to directly in front of him. Welp. Half of the blast from his shotgun struck true, knocking the music note into low HP. The Navi had found the changing music notes amusing, too bad he hadn't thought to sit and listen before resorting to attacking immediately. Ah well, the Melodies were stuck now anyways so he didn't expect to be hearing much from them. In fact, he might as well make some noise of his own even if it wasn't the most musical. Flames erupted from his gun-arm with a roar as he attempted to scorch the Melody directly in front of him off the face of the Net.

"Hey Joan, another chip!" Rayner took a step back from where he had been, eyeing the magnetized Melodies with a rather predatory look in his eyes. He could hear chips being shifted around on the desk as Joan flailed for one, and then finally there was the tell-tale click of the chip finding the slot. The gun on his arm faded away to leave behind his usual claw. New chip data began forming between the 'fingers' of his claws, twin spheres of matte dark grey with a bright green stripe formed and began to float in the magnetic field in the interior of his claw. Rayner was glad the magnetic field seemed to auto-generate when summoning the DoubleBombs, he'd hate to drop one of those on his toes. The Navi scooped up the bombs in his left hand and then easily tossed them to land between the two Melodies that were further back. Maybe with a little luck the bombs would land dead center and hit them both. Rayner wouldn't complain if he only caught one virus in the blast though.

Bombs well away, although still mid flight, Rayner began moving along the lines of the musical score he had found himself on. He'd watch out for any stray Melodies that survived his assault, and also for whatever the Trumpy was up to.

With its breath caught, the Turmpy inhaled deeply to prepare for its next overture, and Rayner followed up his shotgun blast with a scorching shot of note-destruction. A moment too late to save its comrade, the Trumpy started to play. It was a quick tempo, upbeat tune, and in front of it, the two remaining melodies began to glow a bright, happy green.

This seemed to inspire the notes and they both began to bounce around with wild abandon, uncaring of who or what was around them. Initally they both jumped towards each other, and bounced off, then one bounded forward, towards Rayner, and the other went back. The back note landed on the space in between the score, but promptly slipped over on the smooth glass, and slid onto a magnet, which held it tight again, while the other bounced enthusiastically, but inaccurately around Rayner once, then away again.

The navis bombs did, in fact, neatly clock one of the Melodies, and exploded right in its face, but when the smoke cleared, the virus seemed utterly unfazed. The Trumpy's green aura had temporarily protected the two notes from all harm, though it was probably worth noting that the Trumpy itself hadn't benefited from the protective tune. The green glow faded away again as the Trumpy stopped playing, exhausted for another few seconds.

The smoke cleared and the Navi perked up, eager to see what result had been. Behold the slump of his shoulders and the humorously disappointed look on his face! Somehow he managed to convey the distaste and sorrow he felt at being bomb-blocked with the eyes and pixel eyebrows alone!

Seriously though, Rayner found that incredibly unfair. Sure, it wasn't /really/ unfair, but it was annoying. So much for a fast track through the University's Net. At least this was proving more interesting than sitting around in his PET. Well, he'd still need chips anyways.

"Chips please!" He paused, waiting a moment and then began to move around, one more trying to keep track of the multiple lit-squares that heralded the landing spots of the Melody viruses. He could move freely on Magnet and as long as he was paying attention he wouldn't slip on the glass. Luckily none of the glass was broken or cracked so all he had to do was move.

Rayner's expressionw ent from focused to annoyed as he abruptly realized no chip data had appeared. "Oi Joan! Joan! Joan! Chips please!" He increased his volume with each repeated instance of his NetOp's name. Maybe she had fallen asleep? That would make his fighting much more difficult. There was a quiet grumble from the other end of the Pet's voice line.

"Yes..yes, here you go." Joan sounded sleepy, perhaps she had been napping. Rayner just sighed in relief as he felt the chip data enter his system. His right arm formed into the disk shooting gun he had taken to use MaruBlaster with. Two prongs bracketed the slot that fired the disk, all of which crackled with electricity. Rayner took aim, the blue crosshairs appearing in his eyes. They tracked the Trumpy and then flashed bright green as the targeting solution was resolved. Rayner braced himself and then fired. A disk charged with electricity went racing through the air towards the trumpet inspired virus. That done Rayner dismissed the remnants of the Marublaster data and reached for the next, white data packets formed in a cloud just ahead of him and swarmed towards his outstretched claw -

only to simply sink in and cover his entire body in a pleasantly warm weak green glow. Rayner's face under his mask was surely priceless as he froze completely for a moment in disbelief. Well, at least now he had proof his NetOp really was picking chips with her eyes closed.

Despite his ill fortune against the Trumpy's timely tunes, Rayner continues to press his bouncy and boppy foes, singling out the irritating Trumpy as his next target. One of the Melodies tries in vain to jump at him, but its base remains firmly stuck to the magnet line beneath it, causing the poor thing to repeat it's earlier awkward wobbling ad straining. Poor thing. The other, closer note, has a proper go, bouncing towards Rayner, then to the side, and finally back to where it started as it tries to land on him. It doesn't do a very good job, and the one time it actually gets a little close, Rayner is more than ready to dodge past it and out of its way.

This leaves him in perfect set up to sent a crackle of corruption at the Trumpy as it tries to rest and regain its breath from the last tune. He strikes true, hitting the instrument hard and causing some small amount of visual damage. In particular, he seems to have messed up one of the lowest valves on its body. But was that the damage... or the crackle of corrupting code that races over the virus? It starts around the damaged valve, but quickly spreads to encompass the whole virus, the colour of the static turning darker and darker, with flashes of pink in some places. Gradually the static resolves, but what it reveals is a very different-looking Trumpy. the curve of its body has changed a little, and, stranger by far, it now seems to be... wearing a suit? tailored for a curved horn, of course, but definitely a smart, black two-piece suit. Just below its head, the tall collar of a bright pink shirt emerges over the suit's top, and, on the whole, the Trumpy seems quite pleased with is new duds. Its B Flat is still gone though. No B Flat for this Horn Freak.

Rayner's other chip was not, as expected, very much use for the already quite healthy navi, but such is life when your Op is slotting blind.

Rayner evaded the Melodies, smug in the knowledge that he had their patterns on lock down and he could dodge them every time. Granted, it was a rather obvious pattern on their part but that didn't change the fact he could handle it. He quickly got over his heal chip being used and raised his eyebrows at the Trumpy's new outfit, he even gave it a small nod of approval for the sharp dressed virus. The sound of Joan scrabbling at the pile of chips drifted into the PET's microphone and a moment later Rayner's arm was engulfed in a cloud of chip data. Sensing no other chips were coming Rayner split the data between both hands for more effective use of the RageClaw data. The mechanical arm was broken apart by the data and rebuilt with a shuffling of cubes of data. Three of the claws were changed to be facing opposite the forth, the fragile metal struts were strengthened and expanded and forged into sharp metal tips. All matte black and bright yellow with dark grey highlights the arm had kept its original colors.

Rayner's other hand shifted in the glow that engulfed it, his fingers became claws and the fabric of his glove seemed to act as a second skin for it surely wouldn't blunt or dull the sharpness of those points. Rayner flexed his hands then narrowed his eyes before abruptly whirling around and lashing out with both claws at the Melody behind him, reaching out in an attempt to score vicious hits against the bouncing virus's face. Whether he connected or not Rayner would turn to face the other two viruses and walk calmly towards the Trumpy, casting a smug glance at the stuck Melody as he passed.

Rayner acted quickly, making a quick slash at the note behind him before anything else could happen, and scoring three damaging tracks across its stem. Unusually, they left trails in the air behind where he'd damaged the note, bleeding inky blackness. Before he could connect the second blow, however, the sharp-dressed Trumpy had gotten its breath back, and begun to play again, bringing up the infuriating green glow around the remaining melodies. His second slash, therefore, had no impact.

In response to being raked, the Melody behind Rayner began to jump around madly, sailing clear over his head, then downward to the side a little, then... no wait, it got stuck to the magnet and didn't manage to make its third jump after all. The other Note bounced towards Rayner as well, managing to break free of the magnetic strip holding it, only to land on the next one up and get held again.

As the navi walked calmly past the befuddled notes, the Trumpy ran out of steam again, stopping its furious playing to pant for breath once more, and the green glows faded away.

The Elec Navi failed to obliterate one of the Melodies but he was next to the Trumpy now. A flick of his wrist sent his claw slashing at the well dressed virus, his eyes narrowed in mix of a look of self-satisfaction and a predatory gaze. Well, as much as one could pull off a predatory gaze without any pupils or irises. At least the pixel-thin eyebrows helped a bit with that but Rayner did miss having an actual face.

There was the sound of fingers skidding chips across the surface of the desk as Joan fumbled through the mess in front of her, spreading the chips even farther apart. The NetOp grapped three chips and slotted the first one in.

"BLEEP."

Joan startled upright as Rayner's put his hands over the emblems over his ears. That noise was annoying! In the real world Joan was reading a warning that flashed on the PET until she picked the 'do not show again' box and accept, turning a bit red with embarrassment in the process.

"You slot in a chip you already used this fight, didn't you?" She sunk back into her chair at her Navi's questions and mumbled something that sounded vaguely like an affirmative. She considered the two chips in her hand, biting her lower lip. She had no way of knowing if she had already used these chips yet without slotting them in. After a brief moment her eyes began aching again and she sighed, shrugged, and slotted them both in. The first went with no problem but the second...

"BLEEP."

Rayner cursed in surprised, he had just taken his hands off what passed for his ears!, but began sprinting towards the already damaged Melody virus. The look on his face was one of anger at the obnoxious noises and he reached out to slice and dice the stuck virus into data. Unused chip data danced around in a cloud a short distance above his head, buzzing slightly in its eagerness to be used.

As Rayner closes in on the recovering Trumpy, it apparently seems to believe it can stop the navi from approaching it, simply with a few notes from its horn. This is probably also a result of its strange glitch, since it is quite mistaken in this assumption. Its notes cut off in an undignified squeak as Rayner finally slashes it out of existence.

Behind him, after who knows how many failed attempts now, the injured Melody finally manages to line up a bounce that does not get stuck to the magnets, is accurate enough to hit, and doesn't get evaded. It lands squarely on Rayner as he approaches it, and sits on him happily for a moment, so exceptionally pleased with itself for finally managing to make its target. It feels like it's jigging up and down with glee on his back, but its joy is short lived; Rayner retaliates with another rake of his claws, deleting the musical note once and for all.

Further back down the score, the other remaining Melody bounces away from Rayner, hopping at random until it lands on the lowest magnet strip, and sticks firm.
