Layla became very excited as she viewed the interesting area through the screen of her PET, she wanted every thing that those crates held, small or large it didn't matter to her. Again, such as with the door, curiosity was digging at them both. "Don't rush in like usual. There's no telling what could be in here. Guard1 baffle chip, download!"

For once Frio didn't charge in quickly, however this time he carried the shield with his left arm, keeping it angled in front of himself for protection. The gate had to open. The shield seemed somewhat cautious, but Frio's mindset was more along the lines of act know, deal with the consequences later. He walked over to the old console, and started tinkering with the controls. The navi pulled the left hand lever to control the gate, and pushed the right hand lever into the upward position beside the green circle.

-Turn Splice-
As excited as his operator was, Frio moved a little bit more cautiously through the eerily lit chamber, the red light casting only poor illumination over everything. shield at the ready, he made his way over to the controls and began pulling the levers. Pulling the left one down sent a shudder and a series of hydraulic hisses through the machine, and set things rumbling beneath the floor. Even before he could set a hand on the right hand lever, however, pulling the left one without the correct code, which Frio had no way of obtaining, seemed to automatically cause the right lever to slide of its own accord, from the red spot to the green one.

The lights hummed and fritzed as it shuddered into place, then all flickered over to an equally dim, faded green. The room looked strangely different with the light scheme changed, but far more important than that was the fact that the ominous black rock hemispheres had begun to move. the sound of grinding stone accompanied each of them as, in unison, all five began to rise and uncurl themselves.

The light cast shadows over them, but what Frio could see as each one rose up was a vaguely humanoid shape and arrangement of limbs; two legs, a bulky torso and two long arms, reaching out forward with heavy, bulbous cudgels where they ought to have hands. The heads looked almost reptilian, with protruded snouts and rocky spikes for teeth in each open maw. When each stone shape reached a full standing position, a pair of glowing red eyes lit up in each one, and they were all facing Frio.

They were still waking up, it seemed, and none had made a move for Frio yet, but it seemed clear that, if these were part of the auxiliary system mentioned, then Frio was an unwelcome intruder as far as they were concerned. He probably dind't have long before they came right for him, red eyes standing out fiercely in the dull green light that now bathed the chamber. Behind him, the slow turning of metal and hissing of steam seemed to indicate that the main gate was indeed going to open, but it didn't seem like it would be a particularly quick process.

The statues, now seemed to be a lot more then just statues. The red eyes even gave them a sort of demonic feel at the moment. This peaked Frio's interest, since there wasn't much he could do until the gate had risen all the way. "Be careful, those rock thingies look scared." Layla blurted out while her navi walked towards one of the statues. His first instinct was honestly to punch the living crap out of it, but Layla's constant nagging about being carful was pulling at his digital brain.

Instead of punching the statue like guard, he chose to examine it. Frio walked right up to the stone figure to the right side of the entrance. Running his right hand across different parts of the guards body. Yep it was solid, solid as a rock, no surprise there. The lion put his face right up to the face of the rocky figure, and stared it directly into it's eyes. "YO!" He said with a huge grin.

Summary
3. Examine Rock Guard A
As the rock objects uncurled and unfolded themselves into fierce-looking defenders, Frio crossed the room back the way he had come, wandering between them to take a better look at one of the ones nearest the entrance. Climbing up the two large steps to get a better look at the one he picked gave it more time to unfold itself properly, and by the time he was face to face with it it seemed fully 'unpacked', standing ready with its eyes glowing and its cudgel-like arms raised.

It was definitely made of stone, or something like it. But there were some differences here and there; since he was taking the effort to look more closely, Frio could notice that, in the fashion that the creature had been curled up before, all of the outer-facing sides of stone had been very hard and thick, and designed to deflect and impacts. uncurled and awake, however, there were many places on it where the stone was simply more functional, and probably wouldn't be quite as resistant to damage as trying to harm them while they were at rest.

About at that moment, however, the eyes of the creature flared brightly, signifying that all five of them were fully online, and with a lurching, grinding of stone, it raised both fists as though it was about to slam them into the unauthorised intruder. Behind him, the gate shuddered, as though it were about to begin moving open, but it wouldn't be getting there any time soon, at the current rate.

Being so close to what was now obviously an enemy, Frio knew the spoils wouldn't come easy. Having examined the guards body he was able to see the sudden change defensive stature. As the Rock Guard in front of Frio prepared to attack, Frio would attempt to weave it by ducking out the way quickly. The duck put him in perfect position to release a quick frosty uppercut that would hopefully demolish this first defender.

The lion looked across the tier he was on, locking eyes with the other enemy on the same floor level. Frio wasn't sure if he was in range for an indirect attack or not, but he didn't wan to risk it. "Send me a long range weapon." His request came quick, as did her response. Layla easily located the second chip of the battle and slotted it in for her navi to use. It was the weapon that a CannonDumb virus would use. The large blaster digitized itself into Frio's left hand. He wouldn't waste time admiring it, instead he fired off a fast blast towards his new target.

Although Frio's attention was mostly focused on the rock creature nearest him, and its suddenly swinging fists, all five of the guard began moving rapidly to converge on the explorer with the heavy sound of thudding footfalls. He ducked away from the first set of blows, swinging around and socking the creature with his freezing upper. Rather than a shower of rock chunks, however, the blow made the creature shudder as a wave of diffuse energy passed out across the room and the other rock guards creaked in response.

A moment later, the next one reached him; it had jumped down a level from the far side of the room, then in a running leap, crossed the floor to land beside Frio, its own heavy stone fists slamming forward. Though the intrepid navi got his shield up to the blow in time, the sheer weight and force of the fists shattered through the guard and kept going, striking him hard in the defending arm.

Frio's response was quick, as he released a cannon shot from his other arm to blow the attacking guard off the edge of the raised section they were on and back down to the ground level below, but as before the creature wasn't destroyed, instead sharing the damage in a ripple of diffuse energy with the other protectors in the room. Further misfortune still, the space opened up by his ejection of the new attacker was quickly filled as a third one raced along the second step and jumped up, leading with its fists in an almost mechanical aggressiveness. Frio wasn't quick enough to escape the continued assaults, taking this one across the shoulder as well.

Though the others hadn't reached him yet, a glance would show Frio that even the two guards that hadn't manage to attack him themselves were running towards him, heavy feet hammering the ground as they came on, arms out. they'd been completely inert before, but now seemed absolutely relentless in pursuing their task. It was unfortunate that, as long as they were awake, their task appeared to be pummelling Frio into submission.

The gate was beginning to open, while the levers on the console were set to raise it, but it was shuddering at an achingly slow rate, compared to the speed with which the guardians were attacking.

It seemed that these now awakened soldiers would stop at nothing in order to rip Frio to shreds. Two of them were still a little ways off, but they too would be upon him shortly. It was weird though. Frio's punch was strong... In his mind, it should have been strong enough to destroy one of the ancient pieces of rock into dust.

Frio wasn't to sure how, but it seemed as if the damage he landed, was being split between the enemies. That had to be what that sudden wave of energy that spread through the room was. "I think they share health." Frio explained. "If that's the case, I just need the pummel the absolute hell outta one of you." He cracked his knuckles with a large grin. Layla listened, and grabbed two chips that would hopefully help her navi finish this problem. "Shotgun, Shockwave, download!"

The Cannon had vanished from his left hand but now his buster appeared. It was locked and loaded with one shotgun blast, that was fired right at the first statue that landed a blow on him. If that chip connected, it's ricochet could possibly hit another statue that was close by behind it. That would be the best case scenario, especially if the guards actually were sharing damage.

The navigator didn't have much time before he was surrounded. So his next step was to evasively jump backwards as far as he could. This would hopefully prevent him from getting socked in the arm again.

As he was landing though, he chose to digitize the pick axe for his next attack. Right when Frio's feet touched the ground, the pick ax's point slammed into the ground, releasing the Metool's own shockwave attack. The wave slowly made its way towards the same Rock Guard that had been his target before.

Crowded around by the large creatures, Frio was forced to dodge away from one set of pummelling fists even as he tried to bring his next weapon to bear. No sooner had he raised the shotgun at one of them, however, when a painfully solid rock fist impacted with his side and his gun arm was flung upwards, sending the shot into the ceiling. A scattering of rock and earth showered down over them, but none of the stone golems seemed to notice at all.

As he backed up along the upper ledge, another one swiped at him; this one didn't manage to connect thankfully, and he found a moment to release his shockwave attack back down the line. It struck the first guard as it rushed forward towards him, and the damage spread out amongst all of them once again, but the creature didn't even slow down, pushing through to catch up with Frio and punch hard into his chest. The shockwave itself had travelled through, and looked like it was on line to strike a second guard, but it slipped by, veering slightly, and didn't manage to connect.

He'd back up about halfway down the room now, but even so, the stone guardians weren't giving him an inch to breath, the rapid, heavy thunder of stone feet hammering against the ground as they clustered in around him with unwavering single-mindedness. Red eyes glowed in the green lighting as their rocky shapes filled much of his view. At his back, and down at ground level, the gae had risen by a handful of inches, and was slowly working its way up.

Layla could only watch from the real world as her navi was being torn apart by the Rock Guards. "Recover30, RageClaw1 battlechips coming to you now Frio!." The chips were slotted in hopefully giving her navi more of a fighting chance. On the battlefield Frio had made a very slight separation by flipping backwards. a small light white showered the lion navi, but just as it appeared it vanished. The light left him feeling slightly refreshed.

After gaining a second wind, Frio knew that the attackers would stop at nothing to bring him down. "What if I do this?" With a snap of his finger the navi customizer program "Set Ice" was activated once again changing his surroundings into a frozen wasteland. Frio could traverse the icy terrain with no problems... is enemies however, would hopefully struggle when it came to this front. Being extra careful and not just relying on the terrain he would slide to the right a little bit hoping to dodge any attacks that would do him further harm.

Having recovered, changed the battlefield, tried to dodge, what was left? It was time for him to attack. After he dodged to the left, Frio bore his new claws and attempted to dig into the closest ancient defender. If the attack landed it would put the navigator, and operator closer to their goal. Their goal of opening all those tasty looking boxes.

As his many foes hemmed Frio in with blows from every side, the snow-lion received from reinforcement from his operator, as well as fixing up the terrain to be more to his personal liking. The rock guards came on still, no matter how he tried to make space, but the heavy tramp of their feet fell just that little bit out of kilter with their movement as they slid on the ice. The next set of hammer blows that came crashing towards Frio slammed into the wall beside him instead, and nimbly, his own feet not sliding at all, Frio managed to curve himself out of the way of the next as well.

Launching his counter blow, claws extended, proved to be more difficult than anticipated, however; Frio himself might be steady on the ice, but the security golems were not, and his swipe fell shy of connecting with his target as it faltered unevenly on the too-smooth ground. It looked like two of the creatures had hung back slightly this time, hunkering down for a moment, their eyes glowing brightly, but at least for now he'd managed to get some healing, and avoided any further damage, too. His assorted back dodging along the upper platform had moved Frio back almost all the way to the back of the room now and he was almost hemmed into another corner. The gate was continuing to open; it was high enough that he cold probably roll under it now, if he needed to separate himself from the creatures for a bit, but it would still be a while before it opened all the way.

Frio's decison to change the setting both benefited him, and hindered him alike. The enemies missed the navi, while the navi missed the enemies. First their attacks wiffed, follwed by his. The battle couldn't drag on much longer. The duo's folder was running low. Only things left were a very inaccurate whip, along with a flimsy shield that already failed once this battle. Luckily the claws on his paws where still fresh. What was the next move?

"We only have to outlast them a little longer. Frio ran straight towards his next target. traversing the terrain with ease he came face to face with the closest of the Rock Guards. Right when he was in close range he slashed out with his right hand hoping to further injure the five stone soldiers.

Frio needed to stay on his toes here. These guys weren't any sloutches. If luck was on his side, the ice would help more then hurt in this instance as he slashed out again. This time with his left paw claw combination, Even if both attacks were to connect, the lion would need to get out of dodge because it wouldn't be enough to finish them off.

He used all his might to sling himself to the left. If the timing is we right, any oncoming attafer was sure to slide right by him. "This is hard." Frio panted. "You need to feed me some good upgrades if we make it out of this one!"

Desperate to finish the fight before the fight could finish him, Frio ducked and wove on the ice, lashing out with his claws in amongst the crowd of stone bodies pressing in against him and attempting to pummel him with their stone bludgeon arms. Each strike he landed sent out a fresh diffusion wave, rippling between the creatures, but as his second strike landed, there came an echoing cracking sound, and a shift of grinding stone as each of the rock guards paused for the briefest of moments, before resuming their assaults.

Nimble amongst the attackers and steady on the ice in a way that the stony guards were not, Frio was able to avoid the first two sets of heavy fists that came his way, but just as he avoided one attack, one of the creatures that had hung back gathering energy before suddenly rushed forward through a gap in the bodies and drove its fists directly into his ribs. This blow hurt far more than the previous times he'd been struck, and it knocked the wind from the treasure-hunting feline. Reeling from that strike, Frio wasn't able to get out of the way as the other one that had waited leapt forward as well, picking its moment to slam its own charged up strike into the back of his shoulders. the crushing impact was enough to stagger him badly, but in stumbling away, Frio was at least able to extricate himself partially from being pinned into the corner.

The green flickering lights of the room made their red eyes seem more sinister as the five bodies turned to keep facing him. The guards certainly didn't have much keeping them standing, that was clear, but that didn't seem to have weakened their attacks in any way, and Frio himself didn't have much left in the tank either. Worse, perhaps, their movements were no longer completely in sync like they had been before, and they looked like they might be operating at least partially independently now, rather than completely linked.

Frio momentarily fell to both knees. He had to use his left hand to prop the rest of his body up. He was at his utter limit. "Has everything up until now been pointless." The navi tried to take a moment to think.

His operator had been watching the last few segments of battle very closely. Was this it? She replayed every traded blow since the battle began. Since it began! That had to be it... the old machine caused the gate to start rising... but it also caused those statues to wake up. "Frio! Stand and fight!" Layla snapped, trying to boost him up. "You have to get to the console... hit the switch again, if I'm right then the statues will stop moving all together!"

"It might be a little to late for that Layla." Frio coughed as he made it up to his feet. The lion was completely surrounded. His undershirt would allow him to maybe survive 2 more strikes, and if his operator was wrong about the machine.... well let's just say she'd lose more then just the prizes in those boxes.

Whatever Frio's operator said, goes. So it was time to show off some of his nimble cat like athleticism. The navi did a twisting front flip to hopefully avoid any attacks that the statues unleashed in order to keep him from reaching the console. Unless he was finished off during his fancy dodge attempt, he would land just outside of the circle of enemies that had previously surrounded him. With every ounce of power he had, Frio pounced towards the ancient console as directed. His direction of movement was more of a quick scurry to the left, then to the right. Back and forth until he finally reached the destination in mind.

The navigator did his best to remain calm. He knew that the guards would be on him in an instant... "What do I do... What do I do" Frio scanned the surface of the console looking around. The green light caught his eye. The same green light seemed to emit from above. Maybe that was a key, seeing as the light was red up until he touched the machine the first time. Finally tinkering with both levers, he grabbed the right one and tried to push it back into the slot with the red light.

Beaten badly and stumbling, and with no sign of the aggressive security letting up, Frio seemed to be in dire straights. There was no doubt that he'd almost broken the statues attacking him, but his odds of outlasting them, even down to this narrow wire, weren't great. It was in that moment that his operator came up with a new plan, and following it, the battered navi summed up the best of his remaining agility and made for the console just below him, near the gate.

One rocky fist swung as he leapt away, crashing into the earthen wall of the chamber where he had been standing, and a second one took a swipe at him as he passed over it, but by good luck and Frio's speed, didn't connect. He landed neatly and took the remaining steps to the console, even as the other rock guards turned and converged on him again, heavy feet hammering in a stampede.

The level that rested by the green dot, which had snapped up when he'd pulled the one to open the gate, moved with a heavy grinding when he pulled it now, but it did move without resisting. When it hit the bottom position, by the red dot, the lights in the room all flickered over to red again, washing out the green, and a sudden silence fell on the room.

If he looked one way, Frio would be able to see that the gate had, indeed, stopped opening now — the gate level had shifted on its own when he pulled the lighting one back — but glancing in the other direction might give the feline more of a shock. Less than a handful of inches from his head, one of the stone bludgeon arms was frozen in place, stilled mid-swing by the guard creature that loomed right beside him. Its eyes had faded and washed out under the red lights, and looked blank, like stone, now. Behind it, the other rock creatures had also frozen completely still, mid stride.

About a second later, a hiss of steam and machinery sounded as the gate began to swiftly close down the distance that it had opened. Annoying, but likely not the end of the world. More interesting was the way that each of the rock creatures stabilised their stances, then lowered their arms and began crouching down and curling up, accompanied by the sounds of grinding stone, until they had all returned to the compact, rounded and faceted rock shapes that they had been when he first entered the room. If nothing else, Frio had a breather now to think about the situation... but the effort he'd put in so far wasn't going to waste. The guards were once more fiercely resistant to damage in their curled up forms, but not completely invulnerable to it, and in his melee so far, Frio had managed to damage all of them to a point where they might reasonably be destroyed, even while dormant, if he didn't mind taken a little bit of time to be safe about it.

Frio collapsed as soon as it seemed like it was safe to do so. The navi lay exhausted, and panting. "Whew... good call Layla. Guess that's why you're the operator." The whole atmosphere had completely changed. Getting to his feet, he awaited for the next directions.

"Try and destroy one of those statues, then check one of those small boxes and see whats in it." Layla commanded.

Frio was again surrounded by the guards, except now they weren't moving. It looked as if they would be a little tough to destroy. Frio turned to the one closest to him. Taking a quick breath, he threw two consecutive, small snow balls at the stationary rock figure. The snowballs appeared out of no where, and wouldn't do much damage... but hopefully it would be enough to make one of the statues fall.

After his quick attack was over, Frio walked over to one of the small boxes. "Time to see what you are holding." The lion picked the box up and gave it a light shake. Curiously, he shook the box again, this time beside his ear. Still unsure of what it contained Frio just ripped the top of the box open to reveal....

With a moment to breath, Frio caught his breath and calmed down. The room remained eerily quiet, after the resounding thuds of movement before, and the injured navi made the cautious experiment of attacking one of the curled up guards. In their defensive form, his attacks did next to no damage, but each construct was on the verge of falling apart already, and it only took the quick snowballs to break up the last of its integrity, even protected as it was. nothing else responded as the guardian he targeted crumbled and broke apart at last.

Under normal circumstances, it might have taken Frio years of his life to chip away at all of these creatures and remove them from consideration while they were dormant, but he'd brought all of them down to breaking point already, so it would no longer be that much extra effort to break them each apart in safety, while they couldn't retaliate. As long as he left the lights red, it seemed, the danger was passed and he could destroy the security constructs at his leisure while examining the boxes and crates outside the main gate.

He would need to turn the lights green again to get the gate open and get to the real spoils of his encounter, but as long as he dismantled the security creatures first, there would be no more danger. The first small box that Frio looked into had mostly mining equipment in it; this one had pickaxes in it.

((Consider combat effectively dropped at this point; you can take as many actions as you like to continue breaking up the rock guards while they're dormant using whatever chips and buster you have available still, without worrying about round restrictions. Feel free to continue examining the outer chamber if you want; the battle will conclude formally when you open the gate and can get at the loot.))

Having seen the first Rock Guard fall to his almighty snowball attack, Frio let out a sigh of relief. "Whew you guys ain't so tough without your red light huh." The playful lion stuck out his tongue at the now frozen enemies. After opening the first small box, he was underwhelmed with his first "prize". "What the hell am I supposed to do with this pickax? What do I look like? A Metool?"

Deciding to save all the boxes for later, he refocused in on the stand still statues. One by one he attacked with a flurry of snowballs. Frio flung them in twos towards each rocky persona, hoping to dismantle them in the same way as the first. Once this one sided snowball fight ended, it was time to check through the other small boxes. He had high hopes of finding something useful out here, though the real prizes were sure to be hidden behind that gate. The navigator hurriedly searched the smaller boxes in the main room before returning to the ancient console.

"Damn ancient machine... and ancient enemies..." Frio mumbled as he triggered the device once more. The lights were sure to flash to green again, but hopefully this time, there were no threats to keep him from entering the gate.

As slow as the gate seemed to rise before, this time felt even slower since the heat of battle had long cooled off by now. Navi, and operator were both at the edge of their seats... well Frio didn't really have a seat... but he was at the edge of it anyways. What did they come all this way for? What did Frio risk deletion to win. "WE DID IT BABY!" Layla exclaimed, "Now go get our treasure!"

As soon as the gate had risen enough the ice lion pounced towards, then slide under the gate, not wasting anymore time to see what was in them.
It didn't take Frio too long to carefully dismantle the remaining constructs, in between searching the boxes in the main room. Once they were all destroyed, one after the next, he was able to move the lever on the console again and set the gate to opening up without any danger. The lights flickered over to green and the iron began to rise at its slow pace, but no further attacks came and it seemed Frio was in the clear at last.

Searching the remaining boxes outside revealed mostly more mining equipment, power lines, sounding tools, weighing and measuring devices, and even more picks and shovels, however, in one of the boxes the last one he searched, Frio did come across a series of compact pile-drivers, likely for putting in support struts, and the first one he touched immediately collapsed and re-coalesced into chip data in his hand. No such luck for the rest, but one freebies was still pretty nice.

Soon enough, the gate had opened enough to let the victorious navi slip under and examine the storage room beyond. Most of the crates here held personal effects that had never been claimed, but one of the smaller containers seemed to be a cash box that held six hundred zenny, while a series of schematics underneath a clipboard on the main desk released another set of chip data as soon as he examined it. The only other thing of note in the chamber now was a tiny, dusty snow-globe on one corner of the desk, that contained a diorama of six miniatures, figures just like the rock guards he'd just taken a beating from, all chasing each other in a circle. When the light inside the little snow globe was green, they stood up and chased in a circle around the globe, and when it faded to red, they stopped and curled up again. It was actually kind of cute, in a creepy way, when compared to the system he'd just fought through. Frio would be free to take it or leave it as he wished.

"What a haul, what a haul!" Layla cheered as her navi uploaded the prizes to her PET. The money, two chips, and the snow globe were all added to their respective holding areas. "Thats enough for this area, head over to Netfrica and lets get us a target. Then we will hit the bed for the night."

Frio did as he was told, and headed to see the bounty giver program, Wrangler.
Frio's snowball animation brought him back to the slightly familiar area that was ACDC net. He decided to head in a different direction then the last time he entered this area. "I'm itching for a fight, time to get tough so I can head back to Okuden." Frio threw a soft Jan with his right into his left palm. "Oh viruses... COME OUT TO PLAYYYYYY"
