Seraphim and Persephone

((This is your topic for the event. Post here when the confirmation is given.))
"So this is the place, right?" asked Persephone as she looked around. But Persephone stopped Area before she could answer by holding her hand out towards her. "Ehm..." muttered Persephone as she continued to look around and held her hand into the air. But instead of reaching into nothing, she managed to get her hand on the so-called floor. "What the..." she continued and looked upwards to see the ground almost directly in front of her face as she held her eyes closed for a half, "Typical. Ah well." She kicked off into the air and spun around to get her feet directed to the ground again as she turned her face towards Area. "This is the place?" she asked again, this time in a right position and floating slightly above the ground.

"...Could've been a scrambler," said Area out loud as she was thinking while Persephone spun around. The question made her snap out of her thoughts and nodded at Persephone as she started to speak, "This is it. You think he'll be around here?"

Persephone laughed softly and held her hand in front of her chest as she looked downwards at the gemstone which started to glow with a feint yellow light. A hologram standing on the gemstone appeared and looked around as well before turning to Persephone. The figure was of a slim woman with a bikini set on and assorted crystals embedded into her skin. "You sure he's still out there?" Persephone asked as she looked down at the figure, "Mithra."

The figure nodded and looked over her shoulder at the ravaged network. "This looks like a place he'd be at," Mithra said and turned back to Persephone, "All I know is that he survived that one time. But I didn't know you had a personal history with him."

"Some things are better kept secret," Persephone said and ended with a mere grin.

"Well... Even if he is here, do you think you'll be able to find him? This place is a mess," said Mithra and held her hand out at the various Navis fighting against each other of which none were seemingly recognizable.

Persephone merely shrugged and turned the hologram off as she held her arm next to her. "Only one way to find out, huh?" she whispered to herself and started to float forwards, not knowing that she had an ally that was about to come to her side.
"So we'll jack into Electown and go prowling around. The internet fritzed out again, so let's hope this wireless doesn't do it again." Erin had not received the message. Since they had 'conquered' Scilabs, she had simply decided to try Electown out next, with her navi, and see what challenges it offered. All she wanted, really... was a chance to relax. She didn't want to get into the 'epic' amount of fighting that had been handed straight off the bat to her navi. Erin sighed. She knew her navi desired more 'grinding' as he so bluntly put it... but she didn't want that, not right now. It didn't provoke her interests. Could she be growing just slightly bored with her navi? No. She didn't want to deal with it, that was more like it. She wanted to discard him like her parents had discarded her.

She fumbled with the direct link cable, plugging it into the port near the end of the bed, bending slightly over the bed to prevent it from kinking in any way. Erin scooted back, crumpling the sheets and opening the drawer next to her bed. She paused for a brief moment... then reached in, taking out a binder. Filled with chips, instead of filled with cards, she plucked one or two out, wistfully grinding the plastic that of another chip. She did want to netbattle with her navi again, though... but not in the way Seraphim wanted, just to level up right now...

"Seraphim, we're going to meet new people, I've given you a- 'new area word'," she supposed that was good enough. They'd never been to electown net before, "You've not battled there before, but we'll er- be emerging in a... Town." That was the word. He'd get excercise doing side quests, she half-joked. Smiling, she brought the menu down, sending her navi into the electown network.

Then- everything went cataclysmically wrong.

Wh-rp

The PET struggled to load the environment Seraphim was being transferred to, and it complained about the load for a full half minute, strange... Seraphim, on the other hand, was deep in contemplation. Being 'ported to this new 'Electown' area.. there was suddenly a glitch in the system. He fell from about a foot above the ground... Sideways. With an 'oof!' he slammed into the hard surface. Groaning slightly, the navi raised himself up and looked around. It was a battlefield. Not simply a place of refuge and sidequests, this place was a full out battlefield. The navi looked about. Was it an event-siege? That was probably it. He noticed ruined buildings all around. Doubtless, he'd have to go on sidequests afterward to fix them, and donate money in order to repair the broken buildings, collateral damage of the many navis strafing, fighting and being deleted.

"Erin, this isn't a town!" He announced, looking about.

"...I realize that, just a bit, y'know." She answered cynically, more upset that someone had interrupted her trying to socialize through her navi by making a warzone. Erin chewed on a nail reflectively, then sighed. She supposed normal busting was just as stupid as this war... maybe her navi could get to know someone off the bat here and find out what was happening? With a battle this large... it had to be something.

...Right?

"Seraphim, go bump heads with someone, get a party member, I suppose." She spoke somewhat sarcastically, as her navi looked around, then began to run in a random direction through the chaos, some swipes coming close as he neared the edge of it- luckily... and then ran straight into a scrambling wall. He stumbled backward, dazed... and ran full tilt into Persephone, literally falling on her.

"I really hope she isn't out to kill things as well. Er, do you know what's happening,-" she waited for a response, slightly miffed that she couldn't find the name straight off the bat. Seraphim- on the other hand.. Might have just gotten into the battle of his life, for all Erin knew, though. One of them, anyway.
(Dibs on modding)

As Persephone and Seraphim fell into an awkward situation, they were noticed by two netpolice officers hiding behind a barricade. "I don't know what you two thing you're doing, but this is no place for civilians to be making out! We've got a serious situation here! I'm going to assume you two are here by the special order we sent out, so get to work!" a relatively fat NetPolice officer barked, summoning a cannon onto his arm. "If you guys are going to be dead weight civilians to us, just hide behind this barricade and let me and my squad take care of this!"

"Hah! Look at your tax-payer money at work. Putting this guy, who belittles those he protects, into a leading position!? Why don't you do us all a favor and pop a cap in the back of his head right now?" a netmafia leader sneered, throwing a minibomb in the officer's direction. The bomb hit the barricade, blowing it to smithereens and leaving the officers defenseless.

"Dammit, help me out or get out of my way, you blockheads!" he shouted, preparing his weapon for combat. Another officer beside him gulped, watching the two with uncertainty.

"Boss, who ever said that they were with us? The NetMafia put out a message too, you know?" he asked quietly, but was simply ignored by the commander as he fired a few more shots unsuccessfully towards his opponents.

--BATTLE 1 START--
"Get off me, fool!" shouted Persephone as the one called Seraphim fell with his body on top of her. Right at that time she noticed the other Navis speaking to the two and something inside Persephone broke as she slowly analyzed what he had said. "What?" she calmly asked and an arm made of shadows came from the gemstone on her right shoulder, "...Making out?" A hand formed on the end of the shadow and grabbed Seraphim's back, pulling him upwards and off Persephone. She stood up herself slowly and placed Seraphim back on the floor, while her own body floated slightly above the ground. First she glanced at Seraphim and then at the person who had suggested the two were making out. "I already have someone I'm interested in and it's not this brat," she replied to him. Then she turned around to face the NetMafia Navis and sighed.

Area poked through her chip quietly and listened along to the conversation going on in the Net world. "Maybe they know... Persephone..." she suddenly notified her Navi of which just shook her head in return.

"Doubt it," she said, "They're lackeys. Henchmen. Disposable." She then turned towards Seraphim and squinted her eyes as she stared at him. "And what's wrong with YOU!?" she asked in a loud tone, "Suddenly running into me like a headless chicken! Don't you understand the situation!?"

Wait, came a voice from within Persephone's mind and Divinis' image appeared, I remember him... He's an ally. I don't really remember about his tactics or personality though. It's all a blur. He assisted me fighting against Drauchen and I once encountered him when we were fighting this... Lame guy. Unimportant enough to forget his name. Divinis shook her head slowly and glanced through Persephone's eyes at him. He once grabbed the enemy to make an attack hit... He'll be useful.

"Hah," Persephone said quietly to the voice in her head and then turned to Seraphim, "The name's Persephone. Stick with me and you'll survive. For now we have to get rid of these." She pointed with her thumb at the NetMafia Navis with a slight grin on her face.

"I guess it makes sense," Area said quietly to herself, "Maybe we'll lure someone out by defeating a lot of these goons... Worth a shot." With a quick movement she moved her hand through the chips she had and picked out a few to initiate the first attacks. "Ready?" she asked as she glanced over her glasses at the screen.

"Anytime," Persephone replied and held her hands in front of herself, arms stretched out, as she glanced at Seraphim while speaking at him. "I hope you won't become a disturbance..." she muttered at him, "Just do what you always do." With these words she disappeared from trace and instantly appeared behind the NetMafia Navis and, while grabbing the hilt from the gemstone on her left hip, swung out a cutlass in a large arc. The gemstone on the gauntlet she held the sword's hilt with was burning with a fiery red and eventually a snake of flames came crawling out. First it curled around Persephone's hand, but then slinked over towards the sword to engulf it in flames. But as the snake was still crawling over its shining blade, Persephone had already gone into the second step as she swung the sword out in an arc again. Instead of wanting to hurt them with the blade, as she floated backwards slightly, she had propelled forth flames from the sword. The sword's blade had been molten by the heat still radiating from the attack she had used and Persephone tossed the remains on the ground while lifting her left hand. From the gemstone came a dark light that spread out in the shape of a shield and Persephone held it in front of her vertically as to protect her from incoming attacks. "And you!" she shouted from a distance, glancing at the NetPolice Navis over the top of her shield, "Don't EVER call me a 'civilian'. The name is Persephone!"

What's your idea!? Burning my sword! Divinis' voice echoed in Persephone's mind while she just snickered to herself.

Persephone's assault from behind was a rousing success, as she commenced to wipe out the mafia navis with a damaging combo after dropping the beguiled Seraphim to the floor and teleporting behind the mafia goons. The netpolice officers cheered, flanking the remaining mafia leader to run up to her. They took the liberty of finishing off the few goons that had managed to avoid the attacks using their own standard cannons.

"Way to go!" one celebrated.

"Awesome!" one shouted.

"She's hot!" one cooed.

"Little-!" the final voice growled, accompanied by a heavy, gloved hand slapping Persephone across the face [20 damage, bonus ego damage]. "What the hell do you think you're saying? Do you think it's YOUR place to decide who's a civilian and who's not?!" the netpolice commander barked in her face, his teeth clenched tightly with indignation.

The other officer looked at him in amazement. "Commander, she's reduced our casualties to 0% this far and has also helped to deplete the enemies numbers. That kind of violence is out of line!" he defended, stepping between the two.

Punching the other officer to the ground, the commander scowled down at the officer who'd intruded into his conversation. "Damn, has everyone forgotten their ranks around here? If you all are in my squad, show some spine and try to act like it! People get hit now and then, deal with it. Don't tell me what's out of line or I'll put you so far out of the Netpolice that you'll never call yourself a law enforcer again!"

The commander of the Mafia forces fired a shot, only to have it deflect harmlessly off of Persephone's shield. Frowning, he took another shot at the only navi who had not huddled behind the shield, but he managed to avoid the attack. As sweat rolled down his forehead underneath his heavy purple helmet, he fumbled around for a hand-held radio device on his belt. "We're going to need back up in the sector of this transmission, lots of it. Anyone who doesn't have their hands full, please respond. Some chumps are here laying themselves down in the mud so the Netpolice can walk over them, but the dame's damn good at keeping their feet dry."

'Whuuurk!" Seraphim uttered a croaking noise, as he gasped for virtual breath. The ghost hand jerked him off Persephone, then set him back down. he held his throat, for a second, closing his eyes as he coughed. This- this had to be the sulky black magic female character with a tragic past!

"I already have someone I'm interested in and it's not this brat," Persephone replied to the netpolice officer, and Seraphim's wildcard video-game theory was- further proved. She was obviously a side character he could acquire as part of the main quest! He'd have to make the appropriate responses to have her join, but did he want her to join? She would take up valuable time as they tried to accomplish the rhetoric of the main quest, and would have to undergo her own ultimate quest, but it would probably be worth it, as She would bring valuable magics to the team, and some of her items would undoubtedly be transferable. Rass probably qualified as a effeminate character enough to wear them, like some tactics games where certain characters could. He considered the possible accessories, such as an auto-res, or maybe even a 80% counter hit!

Well, his ally was already in motion, and simply decimating the opposition, Seraphim saw just how strong his unexpected ally was in that instant, and cheered her on for a brief instant before there was a 'thwack' as a heavily gauntleted hand struck his ally. Despite his wishes to keep a cool exterior, the heroic navi couldn't take that. That wasn't right! She had just helped those lame dudes out! Was this how the netpolice behaved? He listened to the comments of others while stalking forward, and drew himself up to his maximum height before the commander of the netpolice team. He was still a head shorter or so, so he looked up, trying to look imposing.

"H-hey, you shouldn't do that! You should pick on people your own size, you big bully!" Seraphim was slightly intimidated, but the courage within him rose up- and he winced, closing his eyes as he lashed out with his open, heavily gauntleted hand. Spinning around, he stared down the netmafia commander.

"You- you You! You're a part of an evil society, but I don't blame you for that, I'll stop you now and you can reform and possibly rejoin my party for a short period of time before sacri-" Seraphim stopped, realizing abruptly that either end would have a similar result, and pondered for a brief instant.

"Oh, Right, you get the benefit of being good and just! You won't be living in the nightmare of tyranny, and you shall find your way through life more easily! Yes!" Seraphim nodded to himself, his plan was picture perfect. The navi raised his hand, drawing out a somewhat malformed rifle, as it seemed to have the elements of a sword waywardly smashed into it. Raising the gun-mesh-sword, Seraphim blasted once. The giant explosion had an equal effect on Seraphim, as it literally snapped his arm back and sent him in the opposite direction. He floated through the air for a split second- floated wasn't the right word. Hurled. He was hurled through the air before smashing to the ground, slightly woozy as he raised himself up.

"Ta-sh watch yew-" Seraphim rubbed his jaw, snapping something back into place before finishing his speech, "get for being evil!" He spoke tenderly, which seemed to be caused by a bitten tongue. The navi pulled himself up, then pulled the hammer back with his other hand. The gauntlet had braced his wrist, preventing it from fracturing, but the navi still felt like something had compacted all the bones there. Seraphim fired one last shot, a streak of normal white to further stop the netmafia commander, and attempted to bargain.

"You look like a reasonable NPC, why don't you join up with me, and surrender to the forces of justice and law? We can defeat the forces of evil together!" He shouted over the cry of the weapons, the chaos going about.

Erin, on the other hand, was mostly off doing something of her own, known as 'surfing the 'net', which she found quite useful as she slowly read the report on the catastrophe that had occurred.

Persephone remained quiet for a few seconds, her head turned away from the Navis with which she had fallen into a battle after getting the gloved hand across her face. "...Did you just..." she muttered quietly and glared at the NetPolice officer that had done this. But before she finished her sentence, she glanced at Seraphim who had taken revenge for her in return. She became quiet again, but then started to laugh out loud as she rose to her feet and floated upwards. "I've really hit the jackpot, haven't I!?" she said through the laughing sound of her voice, "Two guys that hit like women." Quickly she moved to a side and returned to Seraphim's side while she glared at the Officer. "You ought to be happy I'll keep it by that... Don't humiliate yourself again." she muttered to him as an eerie light came from her eyes. She then turned her eyes towards Seraphim as he shouted things at the remaining guy of the NetMafia. "You're an idiot," she muttered and turned away as she noticed the weapon, figuring he was about to attack. "Divinis, who is this guy? You seemed to know him," she spoke as a hologram of Divinis appeared on the gemstone of her right gauntlet.

"I think his name was Seraphim... Memories of the Drauchen match are vague to me. Things will get back eventually though. I've told you most of what I can tell you about him," said the angelic Immortal and walked around on the gemstone a bit, deep in thoughts and trying to regain old memories. "As I told before" she suddenly started as she stood still and looked at him from a side, "He asked me to get him to the enemy once... He wanted to sacrifice himself so the attack on the enemy would succeed. That's the only 'strategy' I can remember."

"You're useless," cooed Persephone softly at Divinis and the hologram disappeared. By then she looked at the ground and noticed the ground looking differently than before. "An earth shattering impact, one might say," Persephone said quietly as she looked back at Seraphim who had been propelled backwards, "Don't give a boy the power of a man..." She looked over his movements and the words he uttered from his lips quietly. But as soon after he stopped talking over the request of the NetMafia goon wanting to 'team up' with them, she snapped her fingers and nodded at Area. "Seraphim is your name, right?" she said and glared at Seraphim, this time with a colder exterior than normal.

Area, in that time, started looking for chips that were suitable for this occasion. She tapped a few buttons and a hologram appeared standing close to the PET's screen, but it wasn't a hologram of Persephone. "Drackyre, ready for some fire power?" Area said as she looked at the hologram of the dragon Immortal.

"Just give me the sign and the chips. I'll do the rest," he said and saluted. The shouts of commands were heard as the hologram disappeared slowly. At that time, Area slotted in the two chips she had taken out.

Back in the Net World, Persephone continued to talk with Seraphim. "What are you trying to do?" she asked him, "Do you have any idea what is going on?" She swung her left arm out while she kept the right slightly across her back. "They're of the NetMafia," she said and the gemstone of the gauntlet held out towards the NetMafia officer started to shine in a bright red color, "He chose this path. And as such, he has chosen to take the risk of being deleted in his line of work. The law of battles." A snake made of flames came from the gemstone and tangled itself around Persephone's gauntlet while its head bobbed around while staring at the enemy with bright orange eyes. "If he chose to go our way, he'd be deleted for betraying his own kind," Persephone said and fired the first volley of flames at the enemy, the snake widening his jaws to propel the projectile of fire. "It's better for him to leave now... With a small sense of pride or honour," she said and fired another burst of fire at him.

"We haven't introduced ourselves yet..." sounded Area's voice from Persephone's side. Tapping a few buttons, she continued to speak to the Navi and the Operator that had accompanied Persephone, "The one before you is called Persephone.EXE. My name is Area Darkholme. Get your Navi's priorities straight. This isn't a game."

At that time Persephone held her right arm upwards behind her back with the gemstone turned towards the NetPolice Navis. Slowly it started to get brighter with a light and ready to form a shield if necessary. "We'll take it from here. There may be others that could use your assistance," Persephone said as she glared over her shoulder at the NetPolice Navis.

1. Dodge.
2. Heatshot [40 DMG; Fire Element; Splash; Ranged] @ NetMafia Goon A
3. Heatshot [40 DMG; Fire Element; Splash; Ranged] @ NetMafia Goon A

"You... You worthless-!" the commander scowled, materializing the cannon on his arm once again to go for Seraphim. The other enforcers held him back, despite his violent resistance. "I don't care about the damn mission, scum like you that doesn't respect the law don't deserve to be protected!"

As the netmafia leader continued to be attacked, he slipped onto a glass panel, falling face forward without dignity. Lifting himself up, he raised one hand in the air, making a waving motion. "I give! I know when I'm beat. Let me just get to my feet," he muttered, beginning to materialize a bomb weapon onto his one arm that was still hidden behind the barricade, "and I'll come quietly. Just a... second..." Before he could get any further, the heat blasts obliterated him, causing the bomb to roll off harmlessly to the side.

"Thank you for all of your help, citizen. Without your aid, this affair couldn't gone nearly so smoothly and we would have likely incurred several casualties. Your aid is greatly appreciated," the second enforcer reiterated, then placed one hand on his side, pushing the visor of his helmet down. "I don't know what got into the commander. He's always been a big netpolice advocate and demanded respect, but not normally in such a violent manner. Maybe it's just the stress of the situation? Who knows...?"

"At any rate, you two try to find another netpolice squad for your protection," the third told them, making a thumb motion in a random direction somewhat impatiently. "Or maybe you can take care of yourselves, I dunno," he corrected himself, thinking the two navis might take offense. "But at any rate, we can't protect you. Our commander is effectively incapable of reason currently, and without our captain, we can't function as a squad. Therefore, I'd like to assign you to a group with Commander Cranium in that direction." The navi pointed behind him, where in the distance, a heavy thudding noise was repetitively sounding out. "You'll be safe if you join him."

"WORTHLESS!?" Persephone immediately retaliated and lifted her fist up at the retreating NetPolice Officer, "YOU'RE THE WORTHLESS AND USELESS ONE!" She sighed and held the tips of her fingers against her forehead as she glanced at the ground. "You try to help 'em..." she said quietly, "And this is what you get..." Persephone turned around and looked at Seraphim. "See what being passive gets you?" she asked him as she squinted her sharp eyes while glaring.

"He was helping nonetheless," Area said as she looked down on the PET, but then footsteps were heard as she walked away from the PET. "Just lighting a cig!" shouted Area from afar, standing at the window and the flicking of a lighter was heard.

Persephone groaned at the first comment of her Operator and nodded. "True," she whispered to herself. She floated over towards him slowly and placed a hand on top of his head. "You did well," she said while averting her eyes from his face, "But remember these guys are on a different level than yourself. They won't 'join' us or something." Then a small lightbulb appeared in Persephone's programming and she continued to speak again. "I'm looking for someone in this mess of battles..." she said as she took off her hand from his hand and turned towards the crowds of fighting Navis, "Could you help me? Four eyes see more than one."

Don't tell me it's him you're looking for... sounded Celsius' voice from her mind, What good will hunting him down do? I thought you got over the whole 'revenge' thing. In fact, I feel more alive here.

"Oh, I am looking for him... Indeed," Persephone spoke out loud, even though it seemed as if she was talking into thin air, "But this time it's for a different reason." A grin appeared on her face and she glanced at Seraphim again. "Are you with us or against us?" she asked quietly, with the illusion of a second voice following her words like an echo.
"She kinda sounds suspicious, Seraphim." Erin commented, her voice only slightly perking in interest, most of her attention still focused on the announcement. She had to convert this into a way Seraphim would understand. A small revelation occurred, and she began to speak.

"Okay, er, it seems this giant battle is a pivot point in the plot. You need to decide between Netmafia and Netpolice in order to uh, um, determine whether your ending is one of the multiple evil or good ones." She improvised on the spot, then awaited his response, hoping it would be Netpolice. After all, she couldn't exactly run from the law. Although, if the Netmafia decided to try assassinate her- No, they wouldn't try to kill such an insignificant navi/person, but the netpolice would probably would arrest her for joining the Netmafia anyway.

"Oh! I see!" He spun around to Persephone. The other navi couldn't have read the text at the bottom of the screen, so he'd have to explain the situation to her. She didn't like being trapped in a game, he supposed she was a reluctant NPC who wanted to be a PC, then? And with her sidequest, she could become a real character!

"Okay, er, I have to follow the main quest, so let's go to Captain Crazy, and I'll do your sidequest later! We can do it when the world is about to end!" Seraphim didn't listen to Persephone's probable response, and followed where the other Netpolice navi's arm was pointing.
Persephone sighed and glanced at Seraphim as he continued on his way to the group they were directed to. "This journey had better be good..." she groaned to herself quietly, half annoyed at the idiot she was teamed up with, "World about to end...? And what the hell did he mean with 'sidequest'? I wish he'd take this seriously..." Persephone drooped her head slightly as she started to float after Seraphim, careful of incoming attacks from all sides in the battlefield.

"Call me when something appears, Persephone," Area said as she looked out of the window while smoking her cig. "I wonder if your target is near," she said to herself as smoke rolled over her lips into the air.
Up ahead, three NP officers were standing pensively behind a shield, trying to decide what to do in their situation. In the distance, a NetMafia barricade was set up. A large pair of dark wings stood out from over it, as if the person attached to them either wasn't aware they were showing or wasn't competent enough to hide them.

"Oh, hey, I just got a radio message saying that you guys might show up. We've got a bit of a situation here, but I'm pretty sure you'll be safe," a large navi in a black skinsuit spoke up. The navi's body was covered with silver plates at certain joints and across the chest, and atop his head, the upper half of his skull was coated with the same silver metal. Beneath, however, his mouth was still human, although his skin had a pale gray cover. No eyes or pupils were visible in the two representative black holes in his head-plate, however. Suspecting the two would stare at his appearance, he sighed and turned back to view the situation. "Heh, yeah, I'm with the police, even if I don't look like it."

Another navi in a similar blue skin suit with white plates over the shoulders and down the spine and ribs raised his thin eyebrows, extending out his hand. His black hair was fairly unremarkable, but his lower jaw was covered by a mask with a skeleton-like row of teeth carved onto it, making it impossible to make out his mouth. "I'm Commander Cranium's second in command, Officer Spine. I'll try to explain the situation to you folks. You see, taking refuge behind that barricade are four mafia members. We aren't sure how dangerous they are, but we've been told three of them are new mafia recruits and therefore could still potentially be warned of the hazards of joining such an organization. Therefore, Commander Cranium is attempting to come up with a solution to our dilemma. Do we attack, or do we negotiate? Which one is the mafia veteran? None of this is clear to us. Have you come to a decision, Commander?" he asked again in a muffled voice, tilting his head to an awkward, near -90-degree angle.

The navi rubbed his chin with one of his thick hands, shaking his head slowly. "No, though I'm racking my skull," he responded, shrugging his shoulders. "At least they're not attacking yet." Suddenly, as Cranium finished his sentence, a thrown quake projectile dropped, smashing the barricade. "Get down, you two!" he shouted, falling to the ground himself.

A red navi with a large horned helmet and an enormous, spiked club spoke out from behind the barrier. "You Netpolice officers better scram! I'm taking in a fresh wave of new recruits, and if you try to stop us, we're going to crack your spine and skull so badly that you guys aren't gonna have names any more!" he taunted, spinning the club and pointing it out toward them menacingly. "Our mission is a justified one! These navis, like myself, were thrown out unjustly by their creators!" he shouted, waving his other arm down towards them. The navi's ogre-like face and aggressively spike-covered armor made it hard to believe that he could have good intentions, however.

"We have the names now. That one that's speaking now is MaulMan. We don't know much about him, but apparently, he's the veteran. The other three are... Guy Bates, Dark Angel One Zero One Five, and... ManMan," Spine continued on, raising one eyebrow progressively higher as he read each name. His eyes twitched for a moment, then he closed them and let out a heavy sigh. "Are navis like that even worth considering? Perhaps its best to just delete them after all."

"Nonsense. Use your head. You can't judge their character by their names. A guy like that's bound to have mislead them to believe that the Mafia is the path of the unfortunate and abused. I hear stories like that all the time," Cranium informed his ally, still rubbing his chin. "Well, we have to do something, he's gotten aggressive now. At the very least, take out MaulMan."

"What, you think I'm bluffing? We're all victims here!" MaulMan shouted, raising his club angrily. "You all just hold still while we escape! If you try to chase us, I'm bashing your tiny brains in, dammit!" he shouted. "No, wait, we can't run. They're like bloodhounds, those NP dogs! They'll chase all three of you down and tear your throats out. The only way is to destroy them! Pound them into dust!" he roared, waving his club through the air.

A plane looking navi in a blue jumpsuit with dark black hair stood up, raising a rageclaw into the air. "He's right! Let's fight for our future!"

The other two navis stood up, one a female with dark black armor, dark black hair, and dark black wings, and the other a navi with a black skin suit, brown armor, and a tall, masculine build. "Yeah!" the guy shouted, raising his fist into the air. "We're not letting you stop our escape."

"If you are abandoned by your operators, this is not the way to find a new home! Come with us, and we'll offer you a chance to be paired up with a new operator," Spine encouraged them, trying to look friendly.

"Ha! Listen to yourself!" the man retorted, creasing his brow angrily. "You think I'm going to buy that? I've heard all about how you guys work. You take in abandoned navis and delete them, assuming it's what the operators would have wanted! You've only got their best interests in mind, not ours!" he replied, looking furious.

"What garbage! Is that what he's told you?" Cranium yelled back. Looking to Persephone and Seraphim, he gave another frown. "You guys don't trust that rubbish, do you? We aren't going to delete them. What could we possibly get out of that?"

Spine looked at the ground, unsure of himself. "Wait, no, commander, it makes sense. The Net's so overcrowded already. Furthermore, I've never heard of any kind of 'Netpolice sponsored adoption agency.' What if he's telling the truth? What does the Netpolice or even the general populous gain by saving them?"

"Get a grip on yourself!" Cranium barked, looking severe. "Do the Netpolice not mean justice any more? Are you honestly suggesting we'd operate only within the frame of our own interests?"

"Ha! Look at those fools, ignorant of their own injustices! What pitiful little dogs!" MaulMan bawled with laughter, mockingly pretending to wipe a tear from his eyes. "Guy, Angel, ManMan, join me in the offensive! We'll show these fools justice! You two, if you claim to be righteous, why don't you aid us in our escape? In fact, can I interest you two in a mafia position?" he asked, his shifty eyes trembling with anticipation as he got ahead of himself. "Do it! Kill them and you're in the mafia! That's all you have to do to preserve not only your own lives, but the lives of these innocent navis!" Dark Angel looked at him a little uncertainly, but then readied herself into combat mode. "Don't judge us by our appearance or our faction, you two," MaulMan asked the navi pair, smiling ominously. "Things aren't always black and white, are they?"

"It doesn't matter!" Seraphim announced, with a flash of shining teeth. He seemed rather more charismatic all of a sudden, and his grin seemed wider than normal. He ran a hand through his hair, and it suddenly seemed slightly longer, and far spikier than normal. The oversized antennae-like forelock hung dramatically over his face, and he threw his head backward, laughing. His gauntlets crackled and several 'clanks' and 'ratcheting' noises emitted from them as they reassembled themselves. He tore off his half-cloak-shirt, and shook it out, the color changing and shifting to a dark blue, a shining skull with a flame surrounding it. The flame shifted in its colors, a slightly less than ever-changing rainbow hue. He threw it over his shoulders, the half-cloak now more like an overcoat without sleeves. The navi grinned at his potential allies, then nodded to his 'enemies'.

"We can be all part of one big gang, y'know?" His tone was friendly as the navi looped an arm around Persephone, his grin looking slightly like a leer, but far more inviting than discomforting. He quickly lifted his hand from her shoulder as he waved it in the air, the analog clock showing "00:00", and pointed to himself.

"I mean, what's the big problem? It's all so simple!" The navi displayed those shining pieces of virtual calcium again, "I'll answer that for you! There's no problem at all! You dudes can join my group or be smashed by the fist of justice!" His statements followed mostly by exclamations, Erin sighing with exasperation in the background as 'Seraphim's' grin widened even further, seeming like it would simply come off the ends of his virtually animated face if it came any further.

"So, how about it?" The navi raised a gauntleted fist, and vented steam from it, he'd get more members for his party, and he'd be able to face the obviously huge final boss at the end of this mission with multiple characters, battling to orchestral music in a dramatic and epic clash between good and evil, thrashing out their differences under the last level, the near-end of the world.

It would be awesome.

After listening carefully to the man, although ignoring the command to duck for cover as she felt it was unnecessary, Persephone looked at the four NetMafia Navis in the distance. "So that's what going on..." she muttered to herself and glanced at Seraphim who started to speak. Nodding to herself, she figured this was the best time to talk to Area for a plan of action. "This isn't going well," Persephone started as she switched to a private channel with Area, "Instead of guiding us to someone we could use, we've got more pests. What do we have to do to get to some guy in charge?"

"There is something odd in this scene though..." Area muttered to herself. Persephone couldn't hear her as Area was still standing at the window with her cig. She tossed the cig out of the window and turned around to walk back to her PET. "Persephone," she started as she sat down and took the PET in her hand again, "You've spent time alone without Soryu monitoring you constantly, right?"

"What are you aiming at?" Persephone replied with an eyebrow raised while glaring annoyedly at Seraphim who had just looped his arm around her. She bared her teeth at him, but shook it off and continued to speak at Area, "Yeah. He did sometimes. It wasn't really a bother."

Area glanced over the battlefield and continued to speak to Persephone, while her eyes were directed elsewhere, "So why should it be so important for those guys to have Operators...? Remember the Rogues? They didn't have an Operator too... Like Drakkas and that guy Jophiel or what his name was. I don't think we should pity them or hook back up with an Operator. The same thing will happen after all."

"You've got a point..." Persephone softly muttered and turned the private channel back to local. She glanced at the NetPolice agents and then turned back to the NetMafia guys and girl still behind the barrier.

"So, how about it?" Seraphim had shouted while raising his gauntlet and Persephone slowly floated over to him and held a hand on his shoulder this time.

She floated closer towards his face and whispered to him, "I'll take it from here, boy." Persephone moves sideways and started to shout at the NetMafia Navis. "This guy here is right!" she started and held a hand out at Seraphim, "But he got one thing wrong!" With a big swing she pointed at the NetMafia and continued to shout, "You won't achieve freedom without fighting! As long as the NetMafia and the NetPolice remain in existance, they will continue to fight! To achieve true freedom...!" And with those words Area had plugged in two chips for Persephone, causing a small grin on Persephone's face although less sparkling white than Seraphim's. "...Is to eliminate the opposing side!" she shouted out loud and disappeared from sight in less than a second. Persephone then reappeared crouched behind the NetPolice Navis with her claw-like gauntlets having grown longer, bigger and deadlier. With a great swing of her two arms coming from behind she attempted to get both NetPolice Navis in one go and throw them in front of the the NetMafia Navis so they could have a clear target to attack. She then stood up and pointed at the supposedly 'enemies' and shouted at them, "What good is becoming a lackey of some guy you don't even know!? You'll be weak and you'll have to do whatever they tell you! And what if you get thrown to a side again!? On the other side you'll be free and grow stronger than your wildest dreams!"

She then pointed at Seraphim while she stared at him with her sharp eyes. "And you!" Persephone shouted again, "You speak of justice, but have you ever thought about what they want!? We are in no position to decide for them! You want them to return to Operators so they can be thrown to a side again or something!? RIDICULOUS! You wish to be part of one big gang, boy!? THEN JOIN 'EM!"

"But still..." sounded Area's voice quietly as she glanced at the Navi Seraphim.

"Yeah..." she said calmly and held her hand vertically in front of her face with the fingers stretched. "If you think otherwise, then show me your determination." The gemstones on Persephone's armor shattered and started to produce a metal liquid from the remaining holes that spread over her body rapidly. Eventually her entire body had become metallic and protected temporarily while the ground below her feet had become metallic as well, shining with a beautiful silver color. A soft laugh came from the metal form of Persephone and her silver eyes glared at Seraphim as she spoke at him, "Think of me what you want. I've got my reasons to do this, you already know that. But don't think of me as an enemy. Not yet."

Spine went sailing away somewhat comically into the gathering of netmafia recruits, but Cranium grabbed Persephone's arm with an angry look. "Listen to yourself, woman. I'm on the verge of lumping you in with that mafia scum over there," he growled, pointing at MaulMan with a look of extreme disdain. "Are you trying to say it's okay for navis to go unoperated? Those examples you gave, Jophiel and Drakkas... those were both foolish criminals who nearly got themselves killed! You can't guarantee your own safety on the net without an operator. If you get too big for your britches and try to go it alone, or if your operator for some reason rejects and abandons you, the price is your ability to operate in combat. The Rogues were rare exceptions; don't go thinking everything is peachy and simple for an unoperated navi!"

"Ha ha ha! I'm not a fool, you know. I know damn well we have to fight to be free! That's why I'm going to trash this punk you've so graciously handed over to me, heh," MaulMan smirked, walking over and standing imposingly over Spine, lifting his enormous club and smacking it up and down against one open palm. "Night night, sucker!" he roared, slamming the club down on Spine's chest. A sharp crack was accomponied by a loud yell as Spine tried to free himself from beneath it, to no avail. "Netpolice scum! She's right, you know. We don't need operators; all we need is freedom." Grinning, he twisted the club, boring its spikes deep within Spine's chest.

As the Netpolice officer gritted his teeth in pain, he attempted to struggle out from beneath the club. Finding himself unable to move out from under it, he instead grew his metallic spine up from out of his back. The spine curved upward, then lashed out at MaulMan, attaching a strange, rib-cage like holding around him. "Cranium, help me! I'm doomed!" he cried out in his muffled voice, still trying to move the club from on top of him with no success.

Before Cranium could help out, however, Guy and ManMan had him occupied, each smashing him with a basic chip attack. "We lost the initiative here. I'm going to have to use force against these guys!" he growled, bracing himself to fight as he got back up from the attacks.

"Wait, you guys! I... shouldn't we consider..." the dark, gothic-looking angel from earlier asked, looking less eager to join. "I mean, what's this deal of having to fight to be free? I didn't want to be against the netpolice, I just didn't want to be abandoned! Maybe... maybe we should team up with this navi? He offered us friendship... alliance, I mean," she explained. Her rhetoric seemed to go mostly ignored, as her voice was very quiet and distinctly lacked the impact of the speech that Persephone had used to rile the mafia against the net police.

Even if her words would have had some effect, it didn't matter. Before the situation could continue to develop, Cranium materialized a sword on one arm, gravely injuring the one named Bates. As he fell back wailing in terror, ManMan backed off as well, less courageous than he had been earlier. Next, the officer turned to Persephone, taking a swipe at her that she still managed to dodge. "The situation's changed. I was misinformed; you're not a civilian. So far as I'm concerned, the two of you are netmafia associates now," he told her, looking gravely into her eyes with his own black sockets. "That means you're now on my hit-list." Finishing his speech, he broke off running, attempting to reach Spine. "You're not going to take my second-in-command, dammit!"

"Try and stop me! Ha ha ha!" MaulMan laughed, baring down hard on the end of the club.

"Heh. Well, I'm not going to let some two-timing skank take my commander!" he grinned, launching out a zapring from one of his free arms, hitting Persephone. To his amazement, however, the attack seemingly did not effect her at all, and the electricity fizzled out uselessly with the ring rebounding off in a random direction. His arm fell back down to the ground, and he seemed incapable of acting any further. He groaned in pain as MaulMan lifted the club out of him, held in place by the spine attack but not fearing Cranium's assault.

DarkAngel 1015 continued to look uncertain, unable to decide which side to fight and similarly unable to decide which opponent took priority.

"No, you're wrong..." Persephone quietly said as she immediately went into the next attack, "Don't pretend you know us only because I attacked you." A small grin appeared on her shining silver face as all gemstones on her armor re-appeared on top of the silver metal. "He's innocent," Persephone said as she held her thumb out at Seraphim over her shoulder while the gems started to glow with a beautiful orange color of the flames kept within it. "Your only problem here is me," she continued as she her grin became wider, her pupils staring at Cranium as wide as they could, while flames stormed out of six gemstones in the shape of snake-like dragons. The flames engulfed Persephone's metallic body and in the end nothing could be seen from her actual body except a feint silver shine and the flames that had taken over the shape of her body. "I'm glad you haven't started running away yet, but it was really dumb to stick close to me," Persephone's voice came from within the flames and she brought together her two hands, grasping them together. Two wings appeared on her back and started to beat, giving Persephone a sudden burst of speed as she attempted to plunge her fists into Cranium's chest.

"Hahaha..." whispered Persephone's voice as the flames started to dwindle, but after all the flames disappeared entirely there was nothing left of her actual body. "HAHAHAHAHAHA!" she laughed out loud. Slipping over the floor was a liquid puddle of metal of Persephone which she had become after heating the metal. "Fools," she said and re-appeared from the puddle away from her last target.

"Hrm..." Area's voice sounded as she looked at this combination of abilities, "First there was Raikeito and Inazuma... Now Inazuma and Drackyre. Are their abilities capable of creating combinations? It really is true that they are one."

"I'm taking those guys along with me," said Persephone as she pointed at the NetMafia Navis and then turned towards them, as she changed the direction of her finger towards Seraphim, "Don't attack him. He remains an ally of mine even though he may choose the other side. But feel free to attack him if he attacks you. Just remain on guard." And with those last words, she eyed Seraphim and sighed. "Don't be stubborn," she quietly said, making it impossible for him to hear her words.

On the PET's screen, Area checked the surroundings of the field and the health data of each Navi on the field. "Persephone," Area started and began to look for a useful chip, "One of them is injured. We need to do more to gain their trust, unless you want this idea to backfire tremendously."

Persephone nodded silently and pointed at the Navi known as Maulman. "You with the mace! Finish the job!" she shouted and pointed at the one below the mace, "And the others, try to keep your guard up in case they call for back up!" A chip was slotted into the PET, causing Persephone to receive the energy in her gauntlets. A miniature tesla coil came from the gems in the gauntlets, collecting electric energy between the gauntlets as she held them together to form a ball of energy. Small sparks came from her metal skin now and then as she kept forming it. "You over there!" she shouted and looked at the Navi known as Guy Bates. She swung her arms to her sides and released the ball of electric energy towards the Navi. "This'll soothe your data!" she continued to shout and looked at Area.

"OK," she said quietly and started to go through her chips, while speaking to the PET but not at Persephone. "I've seen you before with my Navi Divinity," she started speaking at Seraphim through Persephone, "As a team we took down Drauchen with some other Navis too, like Druidman. And after that we assisted you when you were set on sacrificing yourself by holding the enemy. Divinity is a part of Persephone now. If you saw her as a friend, then see Persephone as one too. Mafia or Police, you're all Navis. Oh, found it..." Area stopped as she stumbled upon the chip she was looking for and turned her eyesight back to Persephone, "Use this if something goes wrong."

The chip was inserted and tesla coils appeared from her shoulders, two on each side, each sparking wildly with electric energy. Persephone crossed her arms, the tesla coils that were on her gauntlets had already disappeared. She glared at Seraphim quietly once, then turned her eyesight back to the middle of the battlefield while keeping her defenses up.

'Seraphim' flinched visibly. His eyes were wide as he simply stared at Persephone. How- How could she do something just to conform, just to be with the group, in order to get allies... such a method... He flinched as he thought about it, then brought up his hands, lacing the fingers and flexing them. There was a series of cracks as he did the same with his neck, and looked coldly at Persephone for a second before bringing his fists apart and smacking them together. Steam vented from them, and the analogs no longer read 00:00, but 00:10. He set off with a single foot pounding into the ground, trying to outrace Persephone's attacks.

00:09

"I'm glad you haven't started running away yet, but it was really dumb to stick close to me," Persephone said, as 'Seraphim's' eyes flared, and he reached out a hand, blasting it forward and slamming it in into the metal panel in front of Spine, bringing himself to a halt before hauling his fist back as hard as possible. The speed of the gauntlet created a sharp whistling sound that started low, stopped, then suddenly started and spiraled up. With a 'fwoom', the steam in the gauntlet boosted the fist... and a crack sounded as energy was released in a bullet-like nimbus at Maulman, as 'Seraphim' clenched his teeth, and turned his head away from the ensuing explosion. He looked down confidently to see that the former metal panels were turning into a clearer form... he whipped his cloak-coat off, throwing it over Spine as best he could, baring his manly chest to all. Muscles rippled as a gauntlet rose... then was pounded down into the panels, producing a shockwave-like effect throughout the glass panels, shattering most- to all of them.

00:08

"That Bitch!" Erin exclaimed, catching up as she drew out a chip, then tabbing through Seraphim's 'Attacks'. He had just utilized his 'Mach Speed!' move, what else.... What- There were still his original signature attacks he could utilize, she realized. How- how could Seraphim stop that sadistic bitch and her attacks? Those metal panels... Seraphim had (a)bused them in the past to deal quite a bit of damage to the opposition. They multiplied the effects of fire attacks as well as electrical ones, and Seraphim had quite aptly prevented that, but he was now probably going to fal into the hole he had created. He had also wrapped Spine in his protective gear, lending a bit of healing power... Producing blitzing shocking waves couldn't be good for him either, she realized as Seraphim shook the gauntlet out on the hologram, jumping and making it onto the normal panels. Cracking the gauntlets again, the navi glared at Persephone.

00:07

00:06

"Do you mess with all your men this way?" He asked, saluting her with one finger, no prizes for guessing which. 'Seraphim' gestured to the misfit navis and roared out more words, "Do you get a kick out of messing with them too? Is this how you treat everyone, you sadistic bitch? Seraphim and Divinity were against the dragon together! She played music for that poor fool, she helped them out! You just play with people's minds. How can you call that 'Trust'?! And then you tell them not to attack me? Don't be stubborn? That isn't the way of any ma- Navi! That's no way to make friends at all!" The navi swept his gauntlet through the air, continuing to glare.

00:05

00:04

00:03

"You may say that Divinity is a part of you-... But we're all responsible for the sum of our parts. One person who used to be a separate being won't stop me..." The navi slammed the gauntlets together, continuing his speech, "My burning soul can't let your injustices go!" The navi charged at Persephone, a ball of whirling energy growing in one of the gauntlets. He hurled the ball before him, and a blast of wind burst forth, rupturing the air in its path before it as it went. The navi pounded forward, his feet moving faster and faster, it was all the navi could do to keep the feet in constant motion and not stumble as he lunged for Persephone. He wouldn't let this one get away with her crimes. Betrayal of another without a signle thought, tossing their dreams and hopes away, giving them hope against the odds and stealing that away with a shove. How could he forgive her? She was silencing Spine's dreams, his memories... What about Spine's operator? If a character died, his party would be hurt! Friends weren't made to be thrown away, they were allies, companions.

"You're just evil." He announced, as he continued the charge.

00:02

"Their dreams are real! My Dreams are real! I can't be fooled-" He whipped his fist through the air, seemingly ennunciating a point, but also sending fiery energy at the other navi in a nice set of four. The chaotic blasts lurched their way at Persephone, a quartet of lasers seemingly influenced by some quantum occurence as they twisted and churned through the air. The navi yelled out one final statement, as he skidded to a halt behind Persephone somewhere. He turned around slowly and began to speak, his expression surprisingly grim for the normally vibrant and at times, morbidly cheerful navi.

00:01

"I'll protect whatever I want to! What my morals tell me to protect! Not what the world tells me to!" The navi pointed at the misfit navis, "So they don't have an operator, what makes them so special? They're just havis like us all. What makes us more special because we have one? Most of all... What stops you guys from getting one?" He asked, clenching a steaming gauntlet. "Do you know what she intends to do with you dudes? If you murder and kill, what do you think will happen to you? If you attack others without the power of righteousness, what do you think will happen to you? " The navi finished grimly as the gauntlets clicked down- to

All eyes were rooted on Seraphim as he started into a big dramatic speech, flying into the air like a rocket above the battlefield. "You know, talk like that isn't fighting, kid! You're not going to protect anyone with idealistic words and theatrics! Ha ha ha! Nothing but words!" MaulMan laughed, raising his hammer to smash Spine underneath its weight. Unfortunately for him, before anything of the sort could happen, a bullet shot straight through his chest, passing through his first layer of armor and data, then quickly re-emerging on the other side. It wasn't just a tiny wound that the projectile had left; MaulMan now found himself with a gaping hole in the middle of his chest, leaking data at an alarming rate.

The hammer fell out of his hands with great momentum, as if he was still raising it with his arms, then flew backward, cracking the glass that had appeared underneath the navi with a hard thud. "You... You son of a- Hurgh!" he coughed, spitting up data and covering the hole with his left hand while searching for his hammer gropingly with his right. Guy Bates and ManMan looked on in horror as their supposed savior tottered on the brink of death, felled by just a single shot from the justice navi. "You're not netpolice at all, are you, kid? They ain't got nothing like you! But... but we have powerful officers in our ranks! Great allies! Stronger than me!" he muttered, unable to find his voice again. "Why don't you... leave the policemen to die and... come with me too?"

As MaulMan spoke the words, he realized that Seraphim had no intention of doing anything of the sort. The navi approached him with blinding speed, wielding a sword in one hand. "The netpolice have no future! They're going to die! In the end, that's the way it will work! They'll die and I'll-!" he screamed, shielding himself with his arms as Seraphim rushed by him. A brief, wild grin spread across his face as he believed Seraphim had missed, but in reality, the navi had hit its target. With a sounding shatter, glass flew from the floor, cutting Seraphim but more severely wounding MaulMan, who now fell unimpeded through the floor of the net. "Hurting others, isn't it? You like it too, eh? I'm in... so much pain-! Just like all of the ones I killed! I hope I caused them all this much pain!" he shouted out. The voice ended as his body sounded out a sharp thud beneath, accompanied by the light tinkle of glass shards.

Cranium and Spine's eyes were wide with astonishment. The one called Dark Angel looked completely amazed. Guy Bates and ManMan looked as if their very souls had crashed through the floor with MaulMan just then. But Persephone wasn't at all distracted by the event. Instead, she fired a phoenixshot for Cranium, who took the shot in the back with howling pain. "Graaah! This isn't over yet! She's still with them, I nearly forgot!" he reminded the others, bracing himself and gritting his teeth.

"That guy saved me! W-We've gotta get him on the force, Commander!" Spine shouted ecstatically, looking eerily obsessed with Seraphim.

"This isn't the time, dammit!" Cranium barked at his underling, preparing a weapon to attack Persephone.

"Hey, hey! You want to be a netpolice officer, don't you? Cranium's good at getting people past the inspections quickly, no background checks needed! I've seen him do it before. That's how he got me in way back... wait, I get it now!"

"You knew... you know about it all now, eh?" Cranium sighed with a slight smile. "Yeah, it's true that the Netpolice normally would simply take guys like these in as prisoners, tie them up in the system until we figured out... something to do with them. During that time they'd become good for nothings with no future," he remarked, shaking his head wearily. "But from time to time, I pick up one of these NetMafia recruits who think they've got nowhere else to turn... Since I'm in charge of recruitment for my sector, I just put em into a pencil pushing position, and they stay there till they're hammered out. It... keeps them out of trouble."

Guy Bates lit up in rage as the Netpolice officer described his plan. "What the hell? That's rubbish! You're sending monsters after us! L-Look at what he did to MaulMan! What if that had been me?!" he shouted, his teeth chattering between sentences.

"Calm down! MaulMan was not like you, he was a dangerous navi with a history of crime!" Cranium shouted, looking irritated. "You guys all have a clean slate. Don't think you have to end up like he did!"

"So you're intimidating us now!?" ManMan piped up, trying to look brave. "You gonna sick your freaking attack dog on us?" he growled, readying a cannon on one arm. "Whether I have MaulMan to guide me or not, I'm not going to let you guys take me in!"

"Don't do anything stupid!" Cranium shouted out, but it was too late. Before he could get any other words out, ManMan blasted away the cloak around Spine with his right arm cannon. As the Netpolice officer prepared to defend himself, Guy Bates whirled around, throwing a tornado weapon at him that blew him harshly into the air, with a loud crash sounding his fall somewhere in the distance.

"Gahahaha! Secret weapon! Bet you didn't think I had a chip like that!" Guy Bates guffawed, clutching his ribs. Although ManMan looked as if he was suddenly struck with regret and Dark Angel looked horrified, Guy Bates face was lit up with ecstasy at the effect of his attack. "Did you see the look on his face?" he cackled as Persephone healed him. "Delightful! Definitely my favorite part!" As he turned to smile at Persephone, a look of madness gleamed in his eyes. "You're our new rescuer, aren't you, ma'am? I'll follow you anywhere..."

Cranium looked unable to continue fighting at the astonishment of losing his second in command to the thugs. "Dammit... He's gone. That jack-out barrier must have killed him, the poor bastard... And you all! It's your fault dammit! You scum are criminals now! You hear me Bates!? A criminal!" he roared savagely.

Seraphim prepared to punish the navis, readying a weapon and firing it out at Persephone. The attack blew her shield away from her and pierced her body, creating a wound at her hip. Seraphim charged up for another powerful shot, then released, but Guy Bates let out another shrill laugh. "Oh no you don't! I'm keeping my losses as low as I can get them, and she's far too precious to me!" Grabbing ManMan, the navi gave another chilling grin, seeming like a far cry from his previous fearful attitude. "We're equals, I think, but I really don't think she needs both of us!"

The darkly-dressed angel navi cried out to try to stop him, but Guy Bates succeeded and managed to pull ManMan in front of Persephone with a wide grin. "GUY, YOU DIRTY RAT!" he roared, then coughed up data with two shots. Ironically, two continued on past him as he fell limply to the ground. One shot whizzed harmlessly by, barely missing Persephone, but the second connected with her. She attempted to nail her attacker with a magbomb, but he dodged nimbly out of the way.

Cranium healed himself with some sort of regenerative program, looking resolutely toward Seraphim. "I can take care of myself, but we've got to finish this. I don't care about the safety of the two recruited navis any longer, do whatever you need to. They want to be criminals? We'll finish them properly then."

Dark Angel whimpered, pointing towards ManMan's data, which was now traveling upward through the data stream. "How could you have killed him! After we came all this way, Guy! We all worked hard together... to try to-!"

"Are you a weakling too? If you're a weak fighter like him or MaulMan, perhaps it's best that you just die too?" he smiled back at her. "I've got another chip left too, would you like to see it? I'll show your little savior there what his conviction gets him in just a moment!" he grimaced. "I've been feeling it this whole time... This one's special... It wants to get out! I feel that MaulMan was right! I want to hurt all of you Netpolice scum and weaklings! Only my strong guardian angel and I will survive this!"

"Guardian angel?" Persephone commented, holding a hand close to her mouth to prevent her from laughing out loud at this statement, "You idiot. You think this is power? Egh..." Persephone lifted her head to the sky and executed a private link with her Operator to talk. "Area. This has gone on for too long," Persephone whispered.

"What do you mean? Wait, I think I know what you mean... Are you really that determined to find them?" Area asked as she executed some programs on the PET's screen. A few text files popped open besides the window that held Persephone and Area scrolled through them, her eyes moving from left to right swiftly. "Look..." Area started, but stopped as she heard Persephone's voice.

"No. You look at this," Persephone said and moved her head as she gazed over the battlefield she was in, "I have to go on now. I can't go back. I am one of 'them' now." She then looked back at Area, although only from a side, and continued to speak, "I'm pretty sure you haven't realized it, but... Your personality has been going through some strange changes. It also happened with Soryu before. It doesn't feel like you're the Operator anymore, it feels like I'm the Operator and Navi." Persephone sighed as she said this and nodded thoughtfully to herself as she closed her eyes. "I've been dragging you along on this wild chase," she whispered.

"You're not being yourself," Area said as she glanced at Persephone. She sighed as well, but then a small smile appeared on her face. "Don't we all have roads to take?" she said as she looked away from the PET's screen, "Even I have a road to take." Her gaze changed from looking at nothing to the papers scattered upon her desk. Written upon them was a script for a movie Area was asked to cooperate with. She then looked back at Persephone and continued to speak, "But what about Soryu?"

"He'll understand," Persephone said and laughed silently, "Haha, I think he already expected this to happen. Well then..." She slowly raised a hand into the sky and started to generate a surge of data identical to her body's code and smiled slightly. "I guess this is goodbye, Area. Send my greeting to Soryu and thank him for the days I spent with him," she said as a small tear rolled over her cheek. With a quick movement she plunged her hand into her chest and pulled out a piece of coding shaped like a program. Quickly changing to the public channel of speech, she shouted at Seraphim and the others. "You recognize this!?" she shouted out loud, holding the program out towards them in her claws, "This is the program that ties a Navi to an Operator!" And with those words, she shattered the program.

"I guess this is it," said Area softly as the PET's screen instantly changed into a snow storm of static black and white dots after the program was destroyed. "I'll return to school to walk my own path. You walk your path, Persephone." Scrolling through the menu of the PET, she went to the button that had 'Shutdown' written on it and tapped it once. The PET's screen went black and all Area could see was a faint reflection of herself in it, smiling at herself.

Back in the Net World, Persephone closed the hole she had made in her own body and turned to Seraphim. "Hey you..." she said as she glanced at him, "You'd better keep alive." Persephone slowly raised her arms and shook her head from left to right as she continued to speak, "I know you look at me as your opponent. I won't deny it, I am. But I ask... No... I plead you to let me go for now. This is your victory. And maybe if we're lucky... We may meet again. In a 'sidequest' perhaps, as you said before." Persephone turned around with these words and slowly floated away, taking to the sky slightly. "Oh, and another thing!" she shouted without turning towards them first, "Do me a favour and delete that delusional fool that called me a guardian angel! My ride out just appeared." And with those words she fixated a piece of her powers on a weak spot of the jack-out barrier and escaped through it.
