Chip Calibration

((I didn't have any speed upgrades, but I did have a passive sig...That's getting replaced with a basic health recovery.))

Delta started moving to collect the zenny and frags left behind by the viruses...and then stopped, examining himself. "Um...Henry, look at my diags real quick. What happened to the self-repair subroutine?"

Henry stretched, looking at the already open alerts on his PET's screen, then spoke, "Not sure. Give me some time to lock down the issue. In the mean time, you don't seem to be too badly off. Do you think that you can keep going?"

"Yeah, I can keep going. That isn't an issue for now." The red navi responded, scooping up the data left behind by the viruses. "Keep me appraised on your progress while I look." With that, he started moving, searching out another group of viruses to fight. [color=red]"The chips have been working well at least.

((Initiate Search Routine; Target: Battle 3))
((No more passive signature, and the replacement hasn't been put together IC yet. Going to do without for one battle.))
((Edit: 2900z + 720z = 3620z, 82 BugFrags -> 94 BugFrags))

UPDATE: ((Signature update approved. Since this happened before the battle started, I'm going to update now, and just...not use the second signature attack for this battle.))
Continuing on despite his signature attack system's malfunction, Delta would soon find himself wondering into a sort of "testing" area, a more or less half and half field of Metal that echoed beneath his feet and lit up Solar on the other side from where he was, with a rather decent sized part of glass panels that could cause a "kill zone" of sorts should the right attacks hit them. Of course, before he could make his way past, a loud howl came out from around him, a quartet of pillars rising from beneath the paneling in each corner of the field and one near enough to him he could easily hide behind it.

Not a moment later, a Spikey roughly two or three times the size of one you'd find in ACDC would bound in, flames licking off it's body and escaping it's mouth as it stared down Delta, as a pair of viruses...a small Tank beginning it's advancement towards the navi, and a large gunner mount behind one of the pillars that had risen up, all three viruses trained on him and ready to delete the navi without a single qualm. Battle Routines flaring up and locking Delta to battle. If his op would take a moment to look at the viruses, the Spikey would be identified as a "Metavirus", three viruses rolled into one and taking on aspects of all three.

-- Battle 3 Ready? Start!! --
Delta stopped dead upon hearing the howl, already readying himself for a fight as pillars emerged from the terrain...along with a trio of viruses, one of which was definitely unexpected. "What on the net is
that?"

His netop's response came quickly enough, "A metavirus. A single virus with traits from multiple virus lines. Be careful."

Delta took two quick steps to the side as an evasive maneuver before responding, "...not really necessary to say that. That thing is...very dangerous looking." A shield formed on his right arm, ready to block an attack.

"Chips incoming."

Delta grinned as he lifted his left arm, the hand transforming into a bulky, cylindrical buster as he did so. The buster kicked, two fangs launching from the weapon towards the metavirus and turret. He didn't wait for a response, instead shifting position once again in another evasive manuver.

Finally, Delta turned to the tank, raising his buster and firing twice, sending two cannon battlechips downrange towards the virtual mechanized cavalry.

Delta barely had a moment to take in the situation before the gunner virus began to open fire at him, scattering a hectic spray of bullets between the pillars. Though Delta was prepared to take some cover and duck behind on of the obstacles, the hailstorm of fire proved intimidating, but less than accurate. None of the shots managed to find their way to their actual target.

A moment later, however, it became clear that this may have just been a tactic to pin the navigator down as the massive Spikey followed suite with a far more accurate blast of fire from its jaws. The fireball ripped down the line of pillars before exploding. Delta managed to dodge and cover, for the most part, though the initial blast was followed by three more stages of fire blast with increasing spread and coverage. Two, Delta managed to dodge, and one of the blasts burst in space he had already left, but one of them did manage to singe him; it wasn't a lot of damage, but it seemed like the massive virus was only warming up.

Not far from where Delta's quick dodging had let him take cover, another concussive explosion echoed between the metal pillars, buffeting him with a small shockwave; it had missed, but further out, it looked like the tank virus was beginning to trundle in closer to take a better shot.

In the moment that followed, Delta took his opportunity to release a spiralling twin fang back at his attackers. Both shots struck their targets precisely. The gunner, in the process of changing over to its piercing vulcan cannon, was deleted before it could cause further problems, but the fang that struck the Spikey only seemed to enrage it further as it took the damage. It locked eyes with Delta, then lunged forward. Its body curled up and the whole virus shifted into a blazing, fire-wreathed roll, shredding at the ground and columns with its spined hide as it came barrelling towards him with furious speed. At the last moment, the metavirus uncurled, and with a bestial growl slashed and bit at Delta with all of its sudden momentum.

The blow drove him back a foot, but Delta managed to catch the fierce strike on his shield just in time. Flecks of burning saliva scattered past the defence at him, but though the shield itself crumpled under the assault, Delta himself was spared from harm.

Still trying to handle the supporting viruses, Delta manged to find a moment to take two quick cannon shots at the approaching tank as well; the first went wide as the virus rolled closer, but the second impacted solidly, shuddering the tank and sending it up on one tread for a moment before it resumed its advance. The Spikey, unwilling to be ignored, threw back its head and released a baleful, near deafening howl while its body burst into renewed flames and seared at the space around it. Delta was able, just in time, to duck around the other side of the nearest pillar, and dodge away from the rolling wave of fire. It was an intimidating creature, but at least he seemed to be holding his own well enough for now.

Kill the Alpha Spikey to win!
Delta took a moment to reactivate his shield before darting around the pillar. Coming back into view of the enormous hound, he formed his rocket launcher, releasing a cloud of ballast from the back of the weapon as it fired at his opponent.

Henry took the chance to slot in a battlechip more suited for the now close range fight. "Sword coming in!"

Delta grabbed the hilt of the weapon as it loaded, then jinked towards the AlphaSpikey and to the side, hoping to evade any further attacks. Approaching the virus, he brought his blade around twice, hoping to finish the most dangerous foe on the field quickly.

Delta readied his shield again, just in time as it turned out. No sooner had he raised the defence, than the massive Spikey dug its claws in, curled up and presented its spines again, spinning into a dervish of fire and scoring spikes that blasted past and away from the navi once more, slamming him to the side and crumpling the new shield as well as leaving scorched red scratches along the length of the metal pillars in its wake. It uncurled with a leap at the far end of the row of columns, spinning to face and looked around for its target.

The moment that it held still was long enough, however, for Delta to dart around his covering pillar and line up a shot with his powerful rocket launcher. The shot streaked up the length of the are and impacted with a satisfying burst against the metavirus. A genuine sound of shock and pain was his reward, and even if it was immediately followed by a freshly infuriated growl of ire amidst the clearing smoke, at least it was proof that he was wearing the massive creature down.

Unfortunately, ill luck struck, and from his exposed position after taking his own shot, Delta found himself unable to dodge away in time to avoid a blast from the lingering catack virus – the shell itself hadn't struck him directly, but it seemed to pack a moderate blast radius, and the shrapnel from the explosion stung. Spiderweb cracks raced across the glass terrain beneath him where the shell burst, but Delta was already moving away from the damaged terrain. The sound of it collapsing behind him was just background noise.

Shaking it off, the navigator moved to close the distance between himself and the metavirus, dashing up the length of the increasingly damaged kill box. The Spikey snarled and began to launch a series of bursting fireballs in his direction one after another. Delta wove between the shots, drawing closer. One of the shots winged him as it exploded into a side-winding spread of fire, but he managed to avoid the rest as he closed to melee range and took a swipe at the virus with his freshly materialised sword. The first cut slashed deep, drawing another yelp of pain from the creature, but before he could land his seconds stroke the virus leapt back a few feet, away from the blade, before retaliating with a second volley of exploding fireballs. Its aim was more hurried this time, but still a nigh-on point blank shot; Delta managed to avoid two of the blasts, but two more scorched him as they exploded.

The Spikey growled and snarled, flame dripping from its jaws, but it was definitely damaged badly now; one more solid hit might be enough to end the fight.

Ragged as Delta might be, the Alph Spikey was doing worse. Panting and salivating fire, it roared one more time, then curled up one more time, tearing its way towards Delta in a dervish of fire. The attack was wilder, and more out of control as it bore down on him, and the navi was ready for its assault. The beat uncurled to land before him, snapping and biting with gouts of flame, but Delta managed to weave in around the attacks and deliver a quick and decisive strike with his sword. The Spikey staggered to one side, then collapsed with a last snarl of dying rage, before its data-leaking wounds sapped the last of its strength and it stilled, beginning to break down into loose data.

Further off, the one remaining virus paused in its tracks, taking in the scene, and the victorious navi at its centre, then promptly turned in place and retreated as fat as its tank treads could take it. An unexpectedly tight battle, but at the end of it Delta had won through, and was able to claim a well earned reward, along with some slightly less common data from the felled metavirus.

Gunners attack every action, if able. They don't bother attacking enemies they can't hit or enemies they can't damage, but they can select Objects as targets. Their accuracy with the machinegun attack is bad because it scatters everywhere. They are aware of this. They are also aware of the fact that their Vulcan attack pierces objects.

Delta winced as he collected the rewards from the fight. "Henry, what's the status on my repair system?"

His NetOp took a moment to respond, "I have things working again, but...maybe we should call it a day? That fight nearly went badly, We could grab an upgrade and some subchips before...

"I'll be fine, I'm not that hurt." Delta interrupted, beginning to scan the area around the battlefield for other viruses.

Henry took the pause as a cue to continue speaking, "About the repair system...I don't know exactly what happened, but I couldn't get it to run exactly as it was...you're going to need to actively use it, rather than just letting it passively heal you."

Delta seemed unperturbed by this revalation. "Even without healing, I think that I'm good for at least one more fight. Let's give the new system a test drive, shall we?"

"...If you insist. We need to see how it works anyway."

((The answer lies in the heart of Battle 4!))
Victorious and undaunted, Delta insisted on pressing on just a little further to get the feel for his new system updates, and explored deeper into the less-travelled areas of the SciLab network. His search for something to engage led him into some of the dingier alleys that saw less traffic, and it wasn't long before network areas that were less cared for began to come to light.

One particular alleyway between two high-rise towers, promised the conflict that Delta was seeking; just ahead of him, hemmed into by the alley walls, a series of piles of discarded junk data were being picked over by a scattering of scavenger viruses, and just behind, twinkling near the top of a particularly large pile of junk, the promise of valuable data in the form of a glowing green crystal.

To his left, a pair of insect-like magneakers chittered amongst themselves and picked at a data pile, but looked up first as Delta entered the alley way. Their wings buzzed and flickered as they turned to face the threat encroaching upon their scraps. Further squeaks and viral chattered answered as three ratty viruses poked their own heads up from behind some of the other piles of junk.

MagneakerMagneaker (Magneaker)

Magneaker viruses move and dodge slowly. Magneakers attack by launching MagBombs by default. When there is a stunned enemy on the field, however, they will instead charge at the stunned opponent with surprising speed. They are quick to react to the presence of stunned enemies, and execute this attack with very little delay. The DashAttack counts as a dodge against opponents attacking from any angle except dead-on or from directly behind the Magneaker. Magneakers do not charge at un-stunned enemies, unless there is a stunned target in-line with them. Magneakers have Omnishoes while executing a charge attack.

The familiar weight of his shield program settled onto Delta's arm as he activated the defensive program. At the same time, his netop spoke, "Okay, so the self-repair system works more like your rocket now. It needs time to cool down between uses, but you'll get more of an effect when you use it."

"Excellent." With that, Delta activated the repair system, creating an emergency medical kit. Opening the kit, he grabbed some bandages and began to unwind them- at which point the entire kit, bandages and all, vanished as Delta's injuries were repaired.

Already aware of his risky position against the viruses, Delta stood and began moving to avoid attacks. Fortunately for the navi, Henry had already sent two chips. Raising his buster, Delta fired, launching a blast that swiftly expanded into a wide blade of energy towards the insectoid viruses.

Once again dodging, the navi examined his second chip. After a moment's thought, he activated it, summoning a turret onto the field. The weapons platform promptly opened fired upon the ratty viruses, sending a barrage of spikes downrange towards the unfortunate rodents.

Quick to set up his only defense, it turned out Delta would was right on the money with that needed defense as a Magneaker would quickly fire a bomb his way with a puff of air, a metal crackling bomb flung haphazardly towards him and missing quite definitively as it landed far beyond his position, whist one of the Ratties would quickly shoot a bomb out in turn, but the tracking bomb went wide of it's inital target, but wasn't done just yet as it would make a turn around soon.

With Delta quickly patching himself up and getting some extra endurance under his belt, the two other ratties would make sure to send out a duo of bombs at the solo navi, one just missing him as it was passed by him and beginning to turn around for a second shot at the navi, the other would blow up right in his face, but just barely blocked by his shield, leading to it crumpling under the blast and shrouding him in smoke briefly.

The Magneakers would wait as the smoke cleared from the blast, but, would quickly get a blast of highly pressurized water shot at them, one dodging out of the way as the other would be blasted out of existence (70) and deleting the junk pile. As the Ratties watched on, they would begin to fire at him again, one after another...and the bombs honed straight in on him, one after another, but by some amount of dumb luck, he managed to avoid getting clipped by them, between one missing and the other two...this time blowing up in his face...and sending him right back to where he was at the start (30x2). Delta would make sure to summon some help in the form of a Needler, the weapons platform shooting a spray of needles at the trio of Ratties and managed to tag two of them twice, sending them to hell where they seemingly belonged (30x2, 30x2), while missing the last entirely...it was down to the wire for the viruses...and thankfully with the destruction of two Ratty viruses, two of the bombs would defuse entirely, but there was still one headed right for his ass.

Delta turned, opening fire with his buster at the bomb that was still tracking him along the ground. At the same time, his turret fired on the remaining viruses.

Returning his attention to said viruses, Delta felt the weight of his rocket launcher settle into place as he formed the weapon, taking aim at the magnetic grasshopper. Firing at the virus, the navi swiftly activated his shield, the defensive program taking form to block an incoming attack, even as he addressed Henry, "Okay, what have you got for me?"

"Candle, battlechip in. Cannon, battlechip in."

Stepping out of the path of an attack, Delta activated the candle chip, causing a giant candle to form on his side of the field. Without missing a beat, the navi then brought up his buster and fired, sending the blast of the cannon battlechip downrange towards the Ratty (or whatever had survived his barrage so far at least).

((The 'Ping' is our way of denoting an exact delete; it's a minor hat tip to the game series, where a little sound would play on perfect deletes. If you delete a virus with exact damage (i.e. dealing exactly 30 damage to a target that has 30hp left), you get a small bonus of extra bugfrags.))

Two quick shots from his buster let Delta take care of the remaining ratton missile still skittering between the junk piles towards him, while his needle turret continued to lay down fire with precision accuracy. The final ratty was pinned by two shots and deleted, while the Magneaker was winged by one of the shots as it attempted to pepper Delta with another stun bomb. Thrown off by the needler's dart, the bomb sailed wide and exploded with a crackle of static, off to Delta's right, giving the navi a clear shot to finish the battle with his rocket launcher. In the screen created by the weapon's smoke, Delta prepared other defences just in case, but by the time it cleared away he could see that further action wasn't needed for now; the battle was won.

All that was left was to claim his spoils, as the viruses broken down into salvageable zenny, and one of the neakers left behind something that cold be converted into chip data. There was also the green crystal, nestled near the top of the largest refuse pile, even if climbing up to it seemed like it might be a bit unstable.

Magneakers do not charge at un-stunned enemies, unless there is a stunned target in-line with them. Magneakers have Omnishoes while executing a charge attack.

Delta sighed and stretched as he walked up to collect the spoils. "Well, the system works...I don't know how good an idea it is to keep going without subchips though."

Henry hummed thoughtfully before answering, "Well, we have a decent amount of Zenny now...we could always grab some subchips and upgrades on the way home."

Delta reached the large refuse pile, and began climbing up to the GMD, "That actually sounds good. Let me grab this data and we can go." As he reached the GMD, the netnavi steadied himself, examining the mystery data, before attempting to open it where it was.

((Open GMD))
Opening the GMD, Delta would soon find it full to the brim with zenny. Albeit in small amounts, mostly 1s and 5s, but all together the pile that sloped out onto his feet would add up for a decent little bit of pocket change.
