Hunting by numbers

When Lyntael arrived from the transit link, a slim yellow bolt of light dropping her off without any fuss or fanfare, she stepped aside for a moment and looked around to make sure she was in the right place. One hand gripped nervously at her opposite elbow and she swallowed before approaching the... actually rather crude-looking bounty station, if that's what it was. she still wasn't entirely sold on the idea at all, even though it was what Rogan wanted, and this place wasn't really allaying her worries that she had the wrong place, or that something shady might be going on. Cautiously, she addressed the program behind the counter, trying not to look at its ridiculous cowboy hat.

"Ah... hi! My name's Lyntael, and my operator sent me to pick up a bounty hunt request. Is... Is this where I need to be?" She paused for a moment then pushed on. "I need one for the normal networks, and, um, we'll be hunting in Sharo, if that's possible, please."

Tipping its hat with a tilt of its head, Wrangler twirled about with a little dance as Lyntael stated her business there. "Darn tootin' ya came to the right place! This here's m'shack o'dreams, and you're in luck, missy, we gots a few huntin' targets in Sharo right NOW!" The little slot in front of Wrangler's stall then stuttered to life, printing out a small list of viruses.

Wrangler then leaned in slightly, causing the brim of its hat to obscure part of the Prog's perpetually-smiling face, giving it a bit of a sinister hint. "Heh, heh, heh, I gots a game for ya though. Yer gon' hafta guess which one's makin' a ruckus up in them wintery ways." Its voice then lowered to a small whisper. "Lemme getcha a hint though; it probably ain't them fiery fellas. Heh heh!"

Looking over the list, Lyntael read the names, trying to guess. She bit her lip, fingers on one hand tracing slow circles around her emblem, before picking the only two that sounded vaguely cold or snowy-related that she could see. One Bluegon, and the other was Pengi, which was making her think of penguins. Both had chip names after them that references water and ice. She reached out to touch the top one. The chips beside it claimed they were rarer, so, that might be more valuable to Rogan in the end as well.

"Um... This one. Bluegon. Is this one in Sharo?" Her eyes flicked up, uncertain while she pointed to the list.
"Right you are, lil' missy! Congratulations, hee hee!" said Wrangler, as a second list emerged from the printer slot, detailing the reward list for the hunt. "Now if you're right sure about that bounty, you just take that lil' list right there, scurry on out and get to huntin'. We'll know how many y'all done wrangled when ya come back, so don't worry yer pretty lil' head about that. Got it?"

Nodding softly, Lyntael took the list, then looked over it. Briefly, her eyebrows drew down, lips tweaking into an unsure frown, but she brushed it away again after a moment. The chip rewards must only come from doing a great many of the bounty targets, but the staggering climb of numbers sent an uncomfortable flutter through her stomach as she thought about it. She'd been thinking one or two, maybe a small handful, but... the sheet went all the way up to fifty... Swallowing again and working some moisture back into her throat, she nodded a second time and looked up.

"Thank you. I'll come back later then."

She returned to the transit pad quickly, bare feet darting lightly across the floor as she rushed back to Rogan to see what he would say.
It was a day later by the time the young, yellow-clad girl returned, looking no worse for wear than when she'd first arrived at the bounty stall. She darted quickly to the counter.

"Hi! Ah, I need to hand in the bounty I've currently got active. It was for Bluegons, in Sharo." She paused, waiting for the Wrangler to process her request and tally up, while nervously preparing what she needed to say next.

"Thank you. Um, also, could I please get a fresh listing... I've promised to meet some friends in Yoka, but they want to take me to a deeper net layer, the rogue nets. I'm a bit nervous, but I want to be sure I get the right one." Trying to smile, one hand that had been clasped at her waist had crept up to run a finger around her emblem, tapping it occasionally, in a subconscious, nervous fidget.
As Lyntael came up and asked for her reward, a small sack of zenny would materialize into the air, dropping onto the counter for her. All 1680z of it. "Rogue nets huh? Goin for more powerful prey I see. Alright, let me see what I can wrangle ya up!" He said, his hat producing a piece of paper with a list of viruses in the rogue nets for Lyntael.

Lyntael sent the currency away in a string of data quickly, then took the list and looked it over. Most of the names were unfamiliar to her, though some of them were obviously related to ones she did recognise. She didn't know if any of them were supposed to show up in the area where she was meant to meet up with Aurora, though.

"Thank you... ah, just a moment..." She stepped back from the counter and took a few minutes to search for more information; thankfully it dind't take her long to find a public record of known viruses and their general habitats and she quickly cross-referenced the list she'd been given. with only two to pick from, she selected at random and stepped back up to the counter.

"Sorry about that, um... I'll sign up tor this one, please." She handed back the list, pointing out the listing for Karma viruses with an uncertain grin.
"Right you are! We got these little critters playin' their hockey all over the damn place! Here's yer sheet, lil' missy," said Wrangler, hopping as he produced yet another printout for Lyntael to parse through.

She nodded in return, accepting the print out and looking it over properly. The numbers for pay were much larger this time, though the idea of the tally going all the way to fifty still unnerved her. At last she nodded once more, then with another briefly murmured 'Thank you!' she darted away for the exit transit.

A pale yellow beam of light left Lyntael standing not too far from the wrangler's stand and she darted over quickly, giving the program a small wave as she jumped the last couple of feet to stand directly in front of the counter.

Hi! Ah, I've got a bounty contract for Dharmas, but I've got to hand it in for now. I don't think Rogan wants me to get another one just yet, but I got... seven, I think.” She paused for a moment, wondering how to prove it, before her eye caught sight of the sign, and she recalled that the strange little prog could tell regardless. She waited, hands behind her back for an extra moment, then realised something else was missing. “Oh! Um, just in cash, please, no chips. Thank you.”
"Seven of them, eh li'll lady? Then here's yer well earned reward, sweetie!" Wranger would reply quickly to Lyntael as she came back with her bounty, the program swiftly bring up a decent sized bag of zenny for the navi to transport to her operator just in time for his purchase. "If'n y'all change yer mind sweetie, yer always welcome to come back and try yer hand at another bounty!"

Lyntael get: 4200z
Lyntael grinned and nodded her head as she acepted the payment, letting it convert to a slim data string that chased up her arm to her emblem then disappeared as she sent it back.

"Thanks! I'm sure Rogan will have me back here soon enough. Bye for now!" She gave a small wave to the prog, then stepped back a few paces. A moment later the smae column of yellow light whisked her away.

A pale yellow beam dropped Lyntael into the warmer Netfrican environment that surrounded Wrangler's booth and she immediately began to feel like she was going to start sweating again in the dry heat. It was a good thing her clothes were made to be light and breezy - though the thought did occur to her that she was going right back to the misty north again soon, if the network space there was anything like its real world counterpart. She brushed the thoughts aside and darted up to the counter with a few light steps, looking for the wrangler prog, and gave him a small wave.

"Hi again! I was wondering if you had anything that needed extra hands in the netopia networks today? Ah, rogue layer, it'll be, please."
The prog would quickly turn around, having been doing something behind the booth, jumping up with a startled yipe. "Oh dear! You startled me! Was just taking some notes down about virus populations! Anyways, y'all wanted Rogue? Gimmie a sec..." He continued, a ticker next to him spitting out a list for Lyntael to look at. "Pick one'a them and we can square y'all away! Hopefully ONE of them is in Netopia!"

RedDevilRedDevil (Shadow)

Shadows do not dodge, and they only move by teleporting before and after attacking an enemy. Shadows have permanent Shadow, except in their bladed weapon forms. Teleporting before and after their attacks does not require an action. Shadow viruses assume the form of bladed weapons when they attack. Shadows attack a single target only each turn, and will attack that target as many times as they have actions. They will only abort their attack if the target is defeated before the turn ends, at which time they will teleport back to their staring position and float there passively until the next turn. The range and reach of their attacks depends upon the type of weapon they become when attacking, and the accuracy of their attack depends on where they attack from. Attacks from in front of the target are C-Rank, sides are B-Rank, and back-attacks are A-Rank.

ThunderDragon2ThunderDragon2 (ThunderDragon)

This high tier virus is only encountered after battle 5. A PotDragon's pot is stationary during battle, as it remains above the panel the virus appeared on until battle is over or the virus is deleted, and will not fall even if the panel below it should be destroyed. PotDragons have two main attacks, each geared towards either ground or aerial targets. When executed, the pot tilts or falls over, and the dragon charges at the enemy before looping back and returning to the pot. When threatened, they will duck into the pot, which is both indestructible and capable of shielding them from all damage and effects except those that manage to fly into the mouth of the pot. Even Beam Attacks and Blast damage won't leave a mark.

FlashorFlashor (Flashy)

This virus is only encountered on battle 6 or later. This virus has the ability to fly, and its presence on or near panels does not trigger traps or cause panels to break. It is also more difficult to bury or submerge this virus. The virus is smart enough to counter a long-range attack it can see by teleporting out of the way and attacking. It does not do this at close range, and opts to dodge normally and attack with RingZap instead.

Honeybomber2Honeybomber2 (Honeybomber)

Honeybomber viruses do not dodge, as they instead counter attack against hits taken. They are actually capable of moving from place to place with great speed, but rarely chose to do so. When they do move, it is always to interpose themselves between an opponent and one of their allies, although this doesn't always happen. Honeybombers only attack when struck by an attack, and even then, only if they survive the hit. This counter attack is not prevented by Impact, and may execute the same number of times as a Honeybomber has actions in one turn. The Honeybomber may elect to target different enemies for follow-up swarm launches after the first target has been attacked once that turn. While Honeybombers do have OmniShoes, and are constantly flying above the ground, they still enjoy the benefits of wood-based terrain regardless of altitude.

Special: Status Guard: This chip blocks debuffs.

CannonGuard2CannonGuard2 (CannonGuard)

CannonGuards are automatically in guard mode unless they are attacking. When guarding, the turret is protected by a shutter that will stop any and all non-breaking attacks from the front. This shutter cannot be destroyed, even by a breaking attack, so long as the virus exists. The shutter does not protect the turret portion of the virus against attacks from the back or sides. The base of the virus is also immune to non-breaking damage.

Lyntael flipped the print out around to look at it, then glanced up at the Wrangler again with a soft frown on her features.

"You're the expert, aren't you? Can't you tell me what needs taking care of in the place I'm going?" She sighed and studied the sheet again. Progs would be progs, and eccentricity seemed to run strongly in many of them. What would she be likely to find... One hand rose unconsciously to nestle against her chest, rubbing with her knuckles just below her emblem as she thought about it. Netopia as a network wasn't strongly elementally aligned, as far as she recalled... so it would be less likely to be any of the obvious elemental viruses, maybe. Something neutral and common might be her best bet to find it where she was heading. It would be wonderful if he'd just tell her 'hey, there's been an outbreak of bunnies over there', or something. She shook her head and brushed the thought away. The prog had his system and she wasn't going to change it.

"Umm... Let's go with.... The Handy bounty?" As she peeked up at the prog from the list, turning her head and lifting an eyebrow a she looked for some kind of hint that she was on the right track.
"Sorry 'bout that, I don't exactly getta choose what viruses come up! Its a whole thing and not much can be done about it. ANYWAYS. Here's ya list!" He spoke, as a second ticker would come out for Lyntael, a list of rewards and kill counts.

"Here ya go! Y'know the deal, two virus kills and ya can come back for a new one, more gives ya increased rewards up to and including the next chip tier up! Dunno how they're fundin all'a this, think it's some collaborative world-wide gubbernment thing, they always seem to have infinite money."
The answer was about as she'd suspected, and Lyntael nodded with mild relief as she read the bounty hunting areas for the virus she'd picked. That meant there would be an upsurge of them where she was going, provided Rogan had her in network spaces that weren't completely sterilised. She collected the print out and converted it quickly to a slim string of data that slipped away up her arm and across to her emblem, then nodded once more to the Wrangler

"Alright, wish me luck then!" She stepped back from the counter and waved, before stepping to the nearby transit and disappearing in a soft yellow beam.

((To => Covert Reconnaissance))
((From => Stormy Weather))

As the light beam that delivered Lyntael to the netfrican bounty stand withdrew, it left a girl clearly preoccupied with her own thoughts. She approached the small stall with a furrowed brow, but took a breath and focused herself after another moment, offering her usual smile and small wave to the Wrangler at last.

"Hey, I just need to end the bounty I've had active. It was for Handy viruses, the rogue variant. I should have five on record... just in zenny please." Despite the smile, her voice still gave signs that she had a lot else on her mind, but she clasped her hands politely in front of her and waited for the prog to confirm and process the request.
The sole prog had been caught asleep at the register, but immediately woke up as Lyntael had come to him asking for her bounty. "Wawawawa. S-sorry b'out that puddin, been a bit slow these past few days!" He quickly spoke, readjusting the hat on his head really quick, clearing his throat. "Ah, five ah them? Sounds good to me, let me just hit this..." He continued as he hit something underneath the desk, a small bag containing her rewards soon dropping from the sky onto the counter in front of her. "Count em up, should be fourty-two hundrid there to the last zenny! Please come again!"
