Nervous Science

Entering the Scilab network, Cambiare seemed uneasy...like he was all the time. As he nervously stepped into yet another unknown territory, the navi immediately brought up a screen that showed Finny looking down into the PET. "T-this isn't fair! Why do I have to fight the m-moment I wake up?" pleaded Cambiare, still trying to reason with the 'unreasonable.' "Geez, even though I'm going through the trouble to help you become better."

"So I-I'm nothing but t-troublesome?"

"Professor said that he needed a bit more data before he could complete the next Program Drive...You said you wanted to become stronger, right?" Her words struck Cambiare's heart like a spear, causing the navi to shudder as he slowly nodded his head. "...Y-you're not gonna make this e-easy on me, aren't you.". Finny shook her head with her toothy grin. "Not at all~"

-BATTLE ONE, READY!-
As Cambiare reluctantly trudged through the Science Labs network, searching for some sparring adversaries, he found an intersection in the road that he was walking on. In front of him, some Champu seemed to be arguing amongst themselves in front of a sign. One of them looked like it was holding a small piece of paper, with some markings on it, waving it impatiently in front of the other two and presumably cursing in some viral tongue. This continued for quite some time before one of them noticed Cambiare nearby, and they decided amongst themselves to take out their anger on him!

"B-boxing viruses?"

Cambiare began to step away from the Champus as, like any other time, was intimidated by them. But anyone who is as weak willed as Cambiare would also have been intimidated by a pair of burning fists. The navi bit his lip as he tried to fight his cowardly impulses, fully prepared to improve himself no matter what stood in his way...even against a pair of burning fists. "Ohh? I like that look on your face! Get ready, Cambi!" Finny inserted the first Tenuto Program Drive into her PET, changing the navi's outward appearance and his combat style in a blink of an eye.

But just before Cambiare was ready to get into action, he looked down at his hand and found something a little different about his gauntlet. "Looks like you noticed the change. I had to overhaul couple of your sigs while you were asleep! Now lets see it in action!" The navi looked at his gauntlet in an anxious way, unsure whether the new change will be a good or a bad thing...But it would still be better than soaking in tiny amount of damage here and there. "Here I g-go!" Striking up both his arms forward, Cambiare tapped the two giant gauntlets against one another as it began to resonate with bell-like ringing. As the ringing became progressively louder, it also became visible to the naked eye and covered Cambiare's body in whole.

Though it was a strange defense, it was still more reliable than the one before. Cambiare was feeling much comfortable hiding behind the resonating barriers and lifted only his right arm forward for the next attack. "Finny, I need a c-chip!" The operator sorted through her small collection of chips and lifted out the one she received from the last battle. With a menacing grin on her face, Finny slipped the chip into the PET. "...I think you'll like this one." Without warning, Cambiare's right gauntlet opened up and a gigantic tank-barrel came out from within, clearly larger and longer than Cambiare's arm and the gauntlet itself. The navi struggled to keep it up, holding his right arm up with his left. "O-o-oh g-g-gawd!"

Cambiare didn't have fond memories behind this chip, remembering how he was beat up like a punching bag by the Catack viruses. And despite the damage, it was mostly the explosive noise that came with every fire that really got him. However, Cambiare saw this as a twisted form of payback, using the same weapon he endured from to inflict damage on his enemy. "Steady...Steady...N-NOW!" The navi fired the TankCannon at the Champus in an explosive display, causing dusts and debris to fly away from him just from the recoil of the gun. Speaking of recoil, the attack had also sent Cambiare back couple of feet and left his arm completely numb from the shock.

After he withdrew the tank barrel back into his gauntlet, the navi began to keep his distance away from the viruses...all while he tightly held his right arm up as it "recovered" from the attack.

Putting up a much more powerful defense than before in his Tenuto Form, Cambiare charged much more confidently into battle, releasing a large barrel of a cannon from his gauntlet with his first attack! The Champu were taken slightly aback, and Cambiare took the chance to fire the TankCannon, and took out two of them instantly, along with the sign behind them. The last one floated in front of him, stunned for a moment, before taking the chance to attack. Fortunately, Cambiare's defenses held, with no damage to his main body as a result.

"Waaah!"

Cambiare instinctively raised his arms up to cover himself against the Champu's punches, but to his surprise, the resonating barriers held up against the attack. "H-haha...This is g-great!" The navi felt like he could take on the world after he was able to fend off one measly attack, looking down at the Champu right in front of him. "That's the spirit, Cambi! But let's finish this guy before we get too far ahead of ourselves."

Finny slotted her ever-trustful sword chip as it took form in the virtual world, causing Cambiare's versatile gauntlet to let out a neon green sword. "Cut him up good. Cut him up!" The nervous navi was already in action, spinning his body in a full circle before he swung it across the Champu, leaving a trail of green light in its wake. Though that should have been enough, Cambiare was still uneasy about the battle. "F-Finny, could you send me o-one more chip?" The request was simple enough, but the fact that Cambiare was asking a request surprised Finny on the spot. "...Ohohoh? Looks like this little man decided to grow up!" Watching her ever-nervous navi, who was always relying on his operator, taking the first step on his own had a strange mix of joyousness and bitterness for Finny.

The next chip was the shotgun, taking form on Cambiare's other arm as two gun barrels slid out from within. "C'mon, Cambiare, you did this before...S-steady..." In fear that the Champu dodged his sword and ran away, Cambiare hoped that this long-ranged attack would be just the right thing to put an end to this battle. As soon as he aligned the sights on the virus, the navi fired the gun with a spray of bullet!

The navi found himself in an awkward position when he fired his shotgun into absolutely nothing, making himself look like a fool as Finny began to laugh uncontrollably. "N..Nic...PFFFT! NICE AIM, CAMBI!" Cambiare was red with embarrassment as he covered his face with his giant hand, but he only made things worse when he tripped over something on the ground. "O-ow, what was that?" What the navi had tripped over was the broken pole of the sign that still stood after the explosion. Cambiare also found the sign it self, only to find that it was severely burnt off and barely legible.

"...Finny, do you have a-any idea?" said the navi as he began to twist and spin the sign into different angles. "Meh, how can I know? Looked like those Champus you dealt with was looking into it...So, I guess one way leads to nowhere and one leads to some virus-party they were trying to get to?" Cambiare began to sweat, trying even harder to decipher the impossible sign in hopes to avoid the hypothetical "virus-party." After finding a small remnant that pointed towards the right, the navi looked at his right and fell silent.

"L-lets go left."

Whether it was his instinct or fear that drove him, the navi dropped the broken sign and headed leftwards...

-BATTLE TWO, READY!-
As it turned out, the path which Cambiare chose led to one of the main roads of the Science Labs network, giving him plenty of walking room. However, as he went on, the people around became sparser, and he encountered some viruses that blocked his way forward. A couple of CanoGuard viruses, along with two Gunners, had blocked the road with a small encampment. A nearby Mr. Prog saw Cambiare's approach, and said robotically, "Excuse me, sir, but could you please clear the road? I have an important delivery to make."

Cambiare became much more relaxed when he found himself in company of navis rather than viruses. It wasn't until he realized that, after he had taken the right turn in the intersection, he became lost into a stranger part of the net. Turrets suddenly stood in his way, causing the navi to panic as he raised both his arms up in the air as a sign of surrender. "I-I've done nothing!" Finny sighed as she struck her hand against her face, watching as the small sign in the battle before that Cambiare was becoming more confident was simply a "fluke."

Few seconds of awkward silence hung in the air till a Mr. Prog drifted towards the frozen navi. "...C-certainly?" Still keeping his arm up in the air, the navi stepped to the side and cleared the path for the green robot. "E-excuse me, but w-where am I?...And what do you mean by an i-important delivery?" Seeing how the Mr. Prog was so calm, even in the presence of the viruses, Cambiare couldn't help but to be curious...
"I am not equipped with a sector location module, but I believe that we are en route to a private sector, as my task is to deliver some important data packets to one. These viruses are blocking my path forward, but they have not detected my signature as of yet, as it provokes less attention than a Net Navigator's signature. The Normal Navigator escort that I was assigned seems to have been missing since I observed his detour into the Net Square, and as such, I have no means of progressing forward," rattled off the Mr. Prog.

Seems that was the case... At least the viruses were still simply looking his way, instead of firing on him. That was something. Perhaps they were put there by someone?
"...Did ya get that, Cambi?" said Finny, not paying any attention towards what the little green program had to say as she began to check her nails. "The j-jist of it. We still have to d-deal with these viruses, Finny." Cambiare seemed disappointed by Mr. Prog's story, hoping that the Mr. Prog was a 'friends' with the viruses and pass the menacing turrets without a fight.

"Then this sounds like a great time to get into our next Program Drive!" In a blink of an eye, Finny swapped the green drive at the top of her PET with the red Brio drive, giggling at her own impressive feat. Cambiare's body switched into the offensive Brio form, but the navi began to panic at the change. "W-why did you change? That new defense was working fine! L-let's keep on using it!" said the navi as he became completely reliant on his new signature defense. "Hush! You'll be free to whine AFTER you see the new change!" Finny replied with an annoyed tone of voice. "Besides, I already changed it. You want me to change it again and make you crash right now??"

"W-why Finny. Why...."

Before the navi even realized, the stripes on his body began to glow as energies was flowing through his body. "...Woah, w-what is this?" Cambiare began to inspect his body with strange fascinatio while Finny chuckled with a wide smirk on her lip. "Go ahead, try it yourself! First, focus on those turrets without the shield!" With two chips loaded, the navi's arms changed into a buster and a sword in an instant, prompting Cambiare to aim his buster at the Gunner viruses. However, he was unsatisfied with his current angle as he was unsure if the blast would be enough to take out the two at once. "If I could only move over there...H-huh?" The same glow that covered his body began to focus down at his legs as Cambiare felt like he was light as a feather. Rather than questioning it, the navi used his new advantage at work as he began to move into an optimal position for his attack.

"T-this is so weird! Everything feels so...precise!"

Cambiare's vision was clear and defined, also thanks to the boost of energy, allowing him to fire his TankCannon with better accuracy than he was able to before. As the explosion set off after his attack, the navi took off with the help of his boosted legs and moved behind one of the unsuspected CanoGuard. "H-hiiya!" Cambiare brought his sword straight down on the virus like some amateur trying to do a proper judo chop, but at least the very least, wasn't trying to cut through solid steel with his bare hand...

Changing into his newly-reprogrammed Brio form, Cambiare started to eliminate the viruses with ease, as his better aim landed him a solid hit on the Gunners with his TankCannon, deleting them both in one swoop. After that, his sped-up movement processes allowed him to flank one of the CannonGuard turrets before it could swivel his way, and he sliced it apart. The turret's comrade swiveled around at him to blast him away with some shell shock, but due to some divine intervention or other, the normally accurate turret's attack missed Cambiare!

Cambiare froze in place when the bullet buzzed right passed him, slowly tilting his head at the lone CanoGuard with its smoking gun. "Snap out of it! Just finish the job and freak out after!" The navi shook his head and focused back into the battle, holding up his sword hand as he approached the virus. However, Cambiare looked quiet confused as he inspected his body once again, noticing that the glow on his body had disappeared. "W-wha? Where did it go?" He failed to realize that the glow was actually a temporary boost to his performance, not an effect that would stay with him all the time. The navi felt lost without his new power, but with only one enemy, even the most nervous navi of all navis thought he wouldn't have too much trouble with it.

"Here I go!"

Approaching the same tactic as before, Cambiare ran to blind-side the CanoGuard and attack. He ran as fast as he could in order to evade a direct lock from the turret, even if it was a waste effort, and brandished his sword when he was closer to the virus. Rather than a swing, the navi threw his sword into the turret as if he was swinging it for a punch, attempting to stab and gut the turret. "O-one more time!" Cambiare pulled his arm back and threw another sword-punch at the CanoGuard, double-tapping to make sure his enemy is taken care of.

((TOPIC INVASION GO))

"Well, now... You're pretty new to this, aren't you?" A soft, teasing voice reached Cambiare seemingly out of nowhere. "Not to say you aren't effective, I guess. I mean, c'mon, not a scratch on you! And slipping behind someone to attack... That's a good move." Warm breath puffed gently against the navi's neck as the voice chuckled, finally betraying her position. She strode nonchalantly into view on bare feet, her arms resting behind her head, sharp teeth bared in a devilish grin. "Now, let's see..."

Without warning, the girl thrust her face up close to Cambiare's, the grin replaced by an appraising look as her bright eyes burned into his. She withdrew with a curt nod after what seemed like an age. "Wasn't sure what to think about that jumpsuit and helmet... I mean, no offense, but you pretty much look much like you just came out of a box." She shrugged, suddenly flashing him a radiant smile. "There's more to you than that, though, isn't there? I can tell, because I'm fantastic! And so I'm gonna keep an eye on you for a while. It'll be an adventure, yknow?"

Smiling sweetly, the strange navi extended her hand to Cambiare -- her left hand, wrapped up to the shoulder in pitch-black silk. "I'm Cheshire. You haven't heard of me, but trust me, you're really lucky to have me in your corner like this."
Cambiare nodded his head as Mr. Prog thanked him and flew off on the road. "Hmm. Wanna follow that Program and see where he's heading?" Finny suggested as she closely inspected the new chip in hand. "I-I guess there's no harm in doin...g...so..." Cambiare's speech slowed to a halt, standing still as if he was frozen stiff. "...Cambi? What's wrong, you don't look so hot." said Finny, unaware of what was going on. "A-a-a-a v-voice..."

The warm breath on his neck only served to send a chill down the navi's spine and finally found the source of the mysterious voice when it appeared before him. "It's...Ha...hahah...hhihhayhhahah..." What Cambiare saw was a navi, a strange looking one, but definitely a navi. But whether it was the strange patterns or the even stranger silks that was 'covering' her limbs, Cambiare was starting to freak out. "E-erm, uuuh, eeeh...H-hello." Out of courtesy, and a little mix of fear, the nervous navi simply greeted with the navi in front of him.

Because of his panic, Cambiare couldn't quiet hear everything that this strange navi had to say about him. Though it seemed obvious that she wouldn't attack him out of the blue, unlike the HeelNavi he faced some time ago, the navi was still on his guard. "F-follow me? An a-adventure?...C-Cheshire?" Cambiare seemed to be swept up by Cheshire's direct way of speaking, but shook his head when he finally had something to say on his own. "I'm Cambiare...But w-why me? Please go and f-find someone else, I'm no good!" On the side, Finny sighed as she shook her head in disappointment, watching as her own navi began to belittle himself...
Cheshire let her hand fall to her side, an overly theatrical look of disappointment on her face. Her lips thrust forward in an exaggerated pout. "It's polite to shake hands when you first meet someone, you know. The whole stuttering-my-name thing is cute, but try and be a little more cordial when you're speaking with a beautiful girl, yeah?" She suddenly brightened up, giving the awkward navi a friendly smack on the arm with her free hand. "I'll let it slide for this time, though, since you're obviously just stunned by my presence." She casually returned her hands to rest against the back of her head, obviously enjoying the effect she was having on this new 'victim'.

She regarded the retreating form of the Mr. Prog as Cambiare tried to debase himself. Even though her eyes were fixed firmly (and, perhaps even a little hungrily) on the shrinking shape, she couldn't help but chuckle a little at his assertions that he was 'no good'. "That's true! I could tell as soon as I first looked at you! But that's the thing -- Everyone's lame on their first time. Even me!" She suddenly turned to lock eyes with Cambiare. "And that's why I'm here, yeah? To help you stop sucking so much. You've got potential! I can tell. But you'll measure up to it faster if you have someone around to keep you from dying right as things get hard."

"Anyway!" She spun smoothly on her heel, once again facing the journeying Mr. Prog on the horizon. "You said you were gonna follow him, right? We'd better get going, unless you want to miss him." She started off without waiting for another word, flashing a devilish smile back at the navi behind her. She'd leave it up to him whether or not he wanted to come along, but unless he wanted to give up on his curiosity it wasn't really a choice.

[READY FOR A BATTLE JUST LIKE THE GUY BELOW ME]
All of Cambiare's pleads just seem to phase through Cheshire, flinching as the navi gave a friendly smack at his arm. "Argh, no, I-I didn't mean to be rude or anything..." Once again, Cambiare was taken hold of the head-strong navi's way, almost like he's always being led by Finny. Nonetheless, the way Cheshire continued to say how 'special' Cambiare was to her eye really made things ease up for the nervous navi. Nonetheless, the veiled navi wasn't pulling back when she began to point out the bad part of him. "S-suck? D-d-dying?...Finny, am I really that bad?" The operator shrugged and replied with a rather disinterested look in her face.

"...Sooooometimes."

The navi let out a sigh of relieve as he was relatively alright with the unsure answer, satisfied with not receiving the heart-breaking 'Yes, you suck' as an answer. However, he looked up at Cheshire and down at his own hands, seeing that their powers were clearly apart from one another. "W-what should I do, Finny?" Said Cambiare as he clenched his hand into a fist. "C-can I improve myself by going along w-with this navi?...C-Chesire, I mean, not some navi!" The operator was silent as she pondered about the question, but quickly turned her serious face into a smirk as she nodded. "I don't see why not? More the merrier, right? Playing solo is fine, but things really get better when its a duet, you see what I mean?"

Cambiare also nodded his head and finally looked up to give his answer to Cheshire's offering. "O-okay, Cheshire. I'll do i...t...?" Before he realized, the mischievous navi had already taken off to follow the Mr. Prog. "W-wait!" Cambiare ran to catch up with his new 'instructor', trying his best to make himself look good...or at least, try not to make himself look like a fool even more.

-TEAM BATTLE ONE, READY!-
Moving through the Science Labs network with the rather mysterious Cheshire, Cambiare meekly went along, finding some viruses to bust. The road slowly became a less glowy metal road, and their surroundings turned to transparent glass paneling. Not long after their trek started, they came across a small group of charged viruses, which had started to charge the floor with large surges of electricity in a simple act of relieving ennui. Of course, shortly after, they had two much better targets to take out their slow day on.

Cheshire stretched lazily as her gleaming eyes darted between the insignificant viruses lined up before the two of them, passing the time with some minor mischief. Hmm... Wouldn't make a bad snack. "Hey, Iris, are you asleep?" She called, folding her arms casually. "I had to... Had to make a phone call. Who's this other navi?" Iris' voice was calm and detached (as usual! She needed to learn how to have some fun with life, in Cheshire's opinion), but Cheshire got the feeling she'd caught her by surprise, all the same.

"Oh, that's Cambi! He's sort of new to the scene, so I'm helping him out." Cheshire lifted her chin and thrust her chest out, her hands proudly resting on her hips. "Well, well. Aren't you the humanitarian." Iris remarked warmly, taking a second to sip some coffee. Cheshire nodded emphatically, directing the shadow of a wink over at Cambiare. "I'm full of surprises, after all. You know that, don't you?" Iris responded with a faint, throaty chuckle.

"... I feel bad for him already."

Cheshire took a position next to her partner, giving him a quick, friendly nod. "I'll take the bigger ones, alright? You just worry about the rabbits." She shifted her feet over the metal plating beneath her. "This, though... This could be a problem." She smoothly dropped into a crouch, bracing herself against the metal with her right hand. She drew her left arm back slowly, the black silk seeming to slither for just a second before --

"RrrrRRAAAAH!"

-- the girl plunged her fist into the ground, her smile replaced by a look of grim focus. Slowly, tiny black blades of glass spread out from the small hole her fist had created, encircling her and Cambiare and then rushing out to cover the ground nearby. As she withdrew her fist, the grass slowly faded into a more natural colour.

"Much better." she purred, dropping into a lower, more mobile stance. She stood on the balls of her feet, knees bent, leaning forward almost imperceptibly. "Now, let's see... Oh, hahaha!" She drew herself up to her full height and brought her foot down firmly on the grass beneath, two short wooden logs materializing from the ground and flying into the air from the force of the shock. She struck them with the base of her silk-wrapped palm, one after the other, sending them flying at the viruses with slightly different trajectories.

"Still standing, Cambi?" She called to her companion, eyes darting between him and the viruses he was assaulting. "Remember, now's your opportunity to impress me!" Her eyes sparkled as she teased him. Without looking back at the viruses she had been trying to hit, she dropped down to her knees, grabbing a fistful of grass and soil and wrenching her arm upwards, a pleasant breath of heat and the violent fwoosh of a new flame responding to the gesture. With that done, she tumbled to Cambiare's side, watching the remaining viruses intently. If they tried to make a move on him, she'd be ready.
