The First Folly

((You assume right, just running for RP reasons. (^-^ )b ))

Whenever Torrent got into one of those reflective moods, when the world appeared to slink away, leaving one with their thoughts, she often considered her existence. As a being of digital information, what she would consider her "humanity" was nothing more than a simulation, an imitation of reality. When she was alone in her PET, listening to the electric heartbeat of her internal programs, she would smile and relish the feeling of being truly alive, more than just bytes and clever code.

Now however, she cursed the authenticity of her simulated body, aching in the chest from the constant running, her legs sharing the pain of effort. Still the ever-present threat of elimination loomed behind her and it seemed, in Torrent's personal opinion, that to keep running would be an excellent use of her time.

She weighed her options. As Hippie had so playfully pointed out, her meager munitions could barely take out the encroaching enemies. If only she had something that recharged - that she could work with. As she was now, the newly wrought Rolling Log looked to be her best bet, a multi-use weapon that could upset multiple targets at once. However, as the previous battle had proven, the weapon was highly inaccurate to someone who had no experience with it. She needed an edge.

She saw the cave.

"Hippie-"

<<The cave, yes! That looks to be our best bet, Torry!>> Torrent could almost feel her operator's grip tightening on the PET in gleeful yearning.

She put her head down and wished to have been designed with a more aerodynamic shape, pelting toward the opening with a will borne by self-preservation. The relative safety of the cave seemed so far away. She dared a glance over her shoulder and immediately regretted it. Through the film of her shield she could see saliva and fangs, wire and sparks, smoke and cinders, too close for comfort. Her pupils dilated and she almost stumbled when her weight suddenly shifted. To Torrent's surprise, her right hand was forming into the semi-spherical bulb of her cannon chip. In her distraction, she had missed the telltale Twang! that notified her of incoming weapons.

<<Try and slow them down, Champ!>> cheered the sender. If she was trying to make Torrent feel better about the situation... well, it worked. A little.

The green and blue blur dug her feet into the ground, panel particles clouding up from the impromptu skid. The decrease in speed allowed for a moment of inspection, in which Torrent, turning, selected a target. The Beetank was the one of her enemies most capable of ruining her at a distance, a method of warfare she was precariously lacking in. Sighting along her straightened arm, the limb resting on it's opposite, Torrent angled the cannon at the open barrel of the virus' gun. Hoping for some internal damage she breathed out, listened to her instincts, and fired.

The slide hadn't even begun to slow when she pirouetted back onto her path and legged it for cover.

Torrent ran towards the cave, the viruses in hot pursuit. The Bunny launched a ring of electricity at her, but missed. Torrent spun around and launched a Cannon blast at the advancing Beetank. The recoil launched her back through the entrance to the cave. The Beetank groaned and fell back, it would need a turn to recover from having its turret struck by such a force. It would come back online in the coming turn.

The Spikey, however, pursued the fleeing Torrent into the cave. Hot on her heels it breathed a gout of flame at her back as she ran. But she managed to pass by a stalactite and the flames struck it instead, causing it to explode in a hail of rock and debris.

((Noted. The little cannon's all grown up now. :'D))

Stumbling from the shock of her sudden and unexpected method of entry, Torrent scrambled into cover within the relative safety of the cave. Peering over her temporary refuge, Torrent took a brief moment to take in the new environment and gauge the situation.

<<Okay we're here. Time for the counterattack!>> Hippie declared, twanging a chip into Torrent's possession: the Rolling Log.

She recalled the near useless result of her last attempt. She wasn't particularly adept at using weapons that didn't naturally form on her arm. Still she'd learned and had an idea of how to improve her aim. She stood up and stretched out her left arm.

"Gonna have try something a little different", she surmised, smiling a little at Hippie's resultant playful gasp and excited applause.

A filmy sphere that sparked with liquid electricity bubbled up from the palm of Torrent's upturned left hand, an emerald essence swirling within. With the nozzles on her fingertips keeping the bubble steady, she grabbed its surface with her right hand, pulling it back over her shoulder. Contrary to common sense, the bubble failed to burst as it was stretched, the film holding together as it fought to retain its spherical shape.

Torrent turned the opposite side of the crackling bubble toward the cave entrance, the film in her other hand pulling taut like rubber. Just as they had anticipated, the viruses were forced to enter through the tunnel, narrowing her field of fire considerably. Still, Torrent had to focus ere her shaking knees threw off her aim. She centred the bubble upon the approaching wolf-virus, considering it her most valuable target. The shape of the wolf blurred beyond the electrified lining of her makeshift weapon, but a few internal tweaks turned the crackling, yellow lines into an energetic crosshair.

"H-here goes!" Torrent stammered, failing to stop a shiver from snaking up her spine. "Bubblepult: R-rolling Shot!"

She released her grip on the bubble's film which rocketed back to it's natural shape, the force ejecting the green battlechip data out of it's centre. The emerald energy erupted as it left Torrent's digital space, spreading itself into the cylindrical shape of a heavy, fast moving tree trunk which thundered onto the ground and rolled toward the cave entrance.

"B-b-bubblepult: R-r-r-r-r-r-rolling Sh-shot!", Torrent quavered as she let loose a second salvo of projectile bark at her opponents. The bubble popped as it was dismissed, ammunition spent.

"That was so cool! Torry, you rock!" Hippie cheered, helpless under the grip of an easily-excitable enthusiasm. "Now hide your precious noggin before it gets toasted!"

Realising she was still in the open, Torrent shrieked and dove for cover as the viruses continued their advance.

[2]: Double Attack - RollingLog1 (50dmg + Ground Attack + Wide Attack (2), Wood, C) -> Roll Toward Cave Entrance (Bunny)

[3]: COWARD CROUCH! (Dodge -> Behind Stalactite)
Torrent hid in the cave and began rolling logs toward the entrance. The first log hit the fiery canine as it entered the cave in pursuit, bowling it over. The second one missed though, as the Spikey got to cover behind a stalagmite. The Bunny, finally managing to catch up to the cave, was summarily squashed by the two logs rolling out of it.

The Beetank approached the cave as the Spikey jumped out behind a rocky outcropping to breathe a gout of flame. The flames exploded on Torrent's cover, awashing her in searing flame and rocky shrapnel. Thankfully her barrier held it back.

Torrent cowered with her back to the tall rock and her arms over her head. She shrieked as her cover melted and pummelled her warping and flickering barrier with fire and stone, the force sending her rolling away from the Spikey. At the sight of her failing protection, she scrambled away on her hands and knees burbling "Hydro Power! Hydro Power! Hydro Power!" Her glass backpack boiled to life as it churned out the liquid electricity necessary to recharge her barrier.

At some point in her frantic crawling around the rocky outcroppings of the cavern floor she found herself facing the cavern entrance, a moment of lucky respite ruined by the approaching Beetank, weapon repaired and ready to rend.

<<Woah, watch out Torry,>> Hippie warned, <<That thing's got a clear target to shoot at, and it'll tear up that cave if it's not stopped!>>

"W-w-w-well wh-what can we d-d-do?" Torrent was having a difficult time remembering what options she had left. Did she use her taser weapon already? Should she try her buster? Or run away?

She was answered by a Twang and the replacement of her right forearm with a sleek, curved, semi-translucent claw.

<<Torrent, listen carefully. Slice up one of these rocky things and throw it at the tank.>> Hippie advised with gentle insistence. <<I know you can do it. You're the greatest sniper this side of the virtual world, right?>>

Torrent glanced at a particularly sharp looking stalagmite to her side, and nodded. She trusted Hippie not to lead her astray and took a swing at the stone formation with her claw arm, the blade slicing easily through the hard rock with little resistance. The pointy length tipped off of its base and Torrent caught it in the crook of her claw.

Angling herself in relation to her target, she lowered her claw arm to gauge the weight of its load. With a quick moment of calculation to get a rough idea of the rock's flight distance, Torrent swung an overhead pitch towards the Beetank, launching the stalagmite from the claw in a similar manner to a lacrosse ball.

The effort to heave the rock was a little more than she had anticipated, fatiguing her to her knees. Heart pounding, she didn't even get a chance to see if her attack had hit its mark. A low rumble from behind reminded her that there was another problem to deal with. Turning, Torrent whimpered pitifully as the demonic wolf approached her over the remains of a paw-shattered rock formation, wet flames spilling from it's growling muzzle, staring at her hungrily with its eyes of fire.

"Agh! Hippie!" Torrent cried, falling over and scrambling backwards, the Rageclaw forgotten at her side. She backed up helplessly until she found herself corned between a rock and a hard place, namely the cave wall. The virus leered as it padded heavily towards her, a tongue of embers lolling out of its blazing maw. Hippie was probably speaking to her, but the beating of her digital heart and the terror of impending doom drowned her out.

"Stop, wait, hold on, don't eat me!" She blubbered, tears in her eyes. She had her left hand outstretched to instinctually ward off danger. "HIPPIE!!!"

She closed her eyes as the heat of her demise washed over her. Her entire life flashed before her, a virtual play-by-play of her past. There was much she hadn't done yet, so much to accomplish. She had dreams, dreams of glory and adventure and friends and happiness. But they would never see the light of day, torn asunder by fire and teeth. She would die alone, devoured by a hellish hound in a nameless cavern.

But then, she wasn't alone, was she?

Torrent brought her barrier up to full strength with a shout. Just fast enough for the Spikey to leap upon her with a flaming breath attack at almost point-blank range. However, Torrent had a good hiding spot and the attack passed right by her.

Torrent scrambled away and then formed a giant bear claw and ripped a stalactite out of the ground and hurled it out of the cave at the approaching Beetank. Currently ignoring the beast at her heels. The rocky spike sails out like a javelin and skewers the tank in the face, causing it to explode spectacularly.

Then Torrent turns to confront the Spikey as it moves forward to toast her again. In her panic she fires off a Shotgun blast in its face. And is successful in filling the creature full of holes. It slumps to the ground, dead.

~Battle 3: Victory!!~
Rewards: HeatShot, 360z
The fiery hellhound burst into char, stricken by Torrent's lucky shotgun. Its body collapsed before the whimpering green navi, slowly burning away before her eyes as it's data lost cohesion. A fragment of it stayed together, allowing Hippies's PET to download it and develop a usable battle chip. The rest of the Spikeys body either flickered away in whisps of ash or remained on the ground, becoming Zenny data.

Torrent was frozen in place, her shotgun arm rattling as it pointed aimlessly at the space previously occupied by the virus. Her eyes were shut tight and her teeth clenched solidly in a stasis of endless fear.

<<Torry...>> whispered Hippie, attempting to prod the navi out of her shell shock.

Torrent's eyes snapped open and she dropped her outstretched arm, dissipating the Shotgun and the Rageclaw. Her eyes darted back and forth, confirming the lack of enemies. Assured of her immediate safety, Torrent slumped back against the cave entrance wall. Her knees curled up to her chest and she held her head in her hands. The action of the past few minutes had caught up with her; the fleeing, the rolling around, the various cuts, bruises and burns she had suffered today must have exhausted her to her core.

Guilt swept through Hippie's heart. She had pushed Torrent because she knew that the cowardly navi had dreams of being strong and famous, a hero. She so wanted those dreams to come true, that was why she had forced this confrontation. Now it seemed to have gone too far, and she dispaired at the thought of having driven a wedge between them due to her carelessness.

Torrent sobbed. It was a ten-foot harpoon through Hippie's soul.

<<Oh Torry, I'm so sorry! I'm so, so sorry! I knew this was a bad idea and that you didn't want to do it and now I've ruined everything! I put you in a dangerous position and scared you to bits and I'm so sorry! I've really let you down and I'm a terrible friend but please don't hate me even though I deserve it and->>

Torrent sobbed again. But this time it didn't sound quite so dispairing. In fact, it sounded a bit like...

Torrent let her hands fall from her face. She was laughing, not the laugh of hysterical terror, but one of exhausted relief.

"Did... Did you see that, Hippie?" Torrent asked, eyes wet but bright with hope. "It wasn't just a fluke. I can really beat these guys. It took a lot, but I did it."

She chuckled a tired song as she rested against the wall, and it was music to Hippie's ears.

<<Oh Torry, I'm so glad you're alright. I'm really sorry I forced this on you. We don't have to go on, we should call it a day. You deserve it, you... wonderful, wonderful person!>>

"Maybe..." Torrent murmured, strangely reluctant to agree. She was obviously tired, but there was now an odd, steely will in her gaze.

<<Torry?>>

The navi shook her head. "Alright, I suppose we can go."

She let herself recover a bit before getting to her feet. Torrent stared off, a little longingly, into the darkness of the cave interior. But just as she was about to turn and leave, something caught her eye. Something she didn't expect to be exceptionally friendly.

--VIRUS BUSTING, BATTLE 4, READY--

From out of the darkness of the cave, another Bunny hopped up to the Navi. This Bunny didn't seem like an aggressive virus though. It was carrying a wicker basket with many eggs inside. The Bunny stopped near Torrent, stuck a ear into the basket, and presented the Navi with a green mystery data in the shape of an egg.

TAKE THE GIFT AND OPEN GMD: Y/N?

After delivering the present, the Bunny hops off back into the deep, dark cave from whence it came.
Torrent had expected monsters and demons.

Torrent had expected fire and swords and teeth to charge out of the darkness.

Torrent had expected hellish forces of unimaginable horribleness, masses of foul shapes and maws to descend upon her and ravage her meek form until naught was left but pixels and dust.

Torrent hadn't expected the Easter Bunny.

<<Oooh! Lucky break!>> Hippie cooed, her excited applause clearly audible. <<What's inside? Is it a machine gun? A teddy bear? A machine gun in a teddy bear with a cherry on top? Open it already!>>

"Uh... Oh, r-right, sure..." Torrent murmured, reluctantly reaching out to brush the surface of the green container with a single finger.

The GMD opens to reveal...

A light instrument of death lay in Torrent's grasp. The dark blue handle resolved in a flat puck-like shape, from which a number of tapered blades protruded. White lining fanned between the sharp stilettos, a small breeze swirled up from the weapon at even the slightest movement.

<<Holy heck, Torry! There's some serious anti-data software in that thing!>>

Torrent considered the melee weapon with trepidatious alarm, holding it at arm-length away from her, lest she accidentally delete herself.

"Y-yeah... Sounds like a tonne of fun..."

Dispelling the weapon back into Hippie's collection, Torrent looked off deeper into the cave. The helpful rabbit had disappeared off into the shadows, which must mean that the wide entrance lead to deeper, darker places.

"Hippie, would you mind if I went and had a look around inside?"

<<What? And let you miss out on adventure?>> Hippie chuckled, Christmas bells ringing in her mirth. <<As if! Get your keister in that dank dirthole, missy! This is probably where all that nastiness mucking around with our customer service is coming from.>>

"Oh... yeah! Wickerman and Melvin could never find out where it was coming from..." Apparently they just had to run willy-nilly all over the place. Maybe those two weren't even really trying?

The pair of them considerably brightened at the thought of one-upping their co-workers. With a short delay for preparation, Torrent approached the darker parts of the cave, left arm held high with her new Heatshot equipped. The weapon was shaped like a Spikey's head with fire lit in the muzzle, a shabby light source but enough to see the floor by.

Together, they would find this disturbance and prove once and for all that they could be relied on to solve a crisis.

...Even if that led to crying and running for help.

--VIRUS BUSTING, BATTLE 4, READY AND PUMPED?--
Up ahead, a warm glow lit a nearby cavern. A pair of coal stoves burned brightly, being fed by a humanoid creature with a coal miner outfit. A trio of beady eyed bats hung above them, basking in the warmth of the two coal stoves.

But then they noticed the Navi and gave off a terrible shriek. Their eyes glowed red and sinister. The miner turned around just as the coal stoves themselves grew scary faces! Terrifying was the scene before Torrent. Knowing she would have to battle in this deep, dark cave in order to survive.

~Battle 4: Start!!~
Torrent stumbled through the dark cave, her toes in constant danger from wide rocks that escaped her meager lightsource. One particularly bad stubbing resulted in a barrage of light curses that became amplified by the echoey rock walls, and the green navi looked up to discover that she'd interrupted an entire cavern full of wild, vicious creatures of decay and destruction.

Torrent froze, trembling on the spot, the old fear returning to stand strong in her digital heart. Fist clenched, she forced herself to look them in the eye. She had proven it before, she had the ability to deal with these cretins. She had feared for so long that she would never reach the lofty heights of stardom, resenting the terror that chained her to cafeteria tables. But now, now that she had actually survived not just one fluke encounter but three dangerous battles for survival...

She felt as though she had a chance.

I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared. She repeated in her mind, willing the fear to make itself scarce and let her face the viruses without a mental handicap. She tried to attempt a 'Hydro Power', but the words refused to get out of her throat and enjoy the fresh air. The protective shield still emerged though, throwing up a defence that was looking increasingly flimsy compared to the number of enemies before her.

Twang!

As green weapon energy coursed through Torrent's system, it became clear to her that the sent battlechip was Hippie's way of reinforcing the navi's blossoming ability to fight.

<<Are you ready for this Torrent?>>, Hippie asked cautiously, worry wavering her voice. She seemed to be pained by her earlier insistence and was making an effort to prevent a repeat offence. <<I will be here to help you, push you and make you stronger, but there will always be the option to let go. All you need to do is let me know and i'll work hard to get you out.>>

Torrent still trembled, the threat of death was rudely unhelpful in that way, but the companionship of her focus-frazzled friend was way more reassuring than it had any right to be.

"Th-thanks Hippie, you-"

<<Okay, enough chittery-chat! Go smack those ghoulies into lame-ies!>> Hippie interrupted with reckless enthusiasm for the soon-to-be ensuing carnage.

"Ah, y-y-yeah."

Torrent still had her Heatshot arm equipped, but the Spikey-shaped barrel was still able to hold her 'bubblepult' in its filmy jaw. She grabbed the green bubble filled with RollingLog energy, took the proper stance and stretched the sphere as far as it would go.

Her arm was shaking.

"I... i'm n-not... I'm not a-afraid of you." She stuttered faintly at the assembled viruses. Then, hearing how quietly she had said it, shook her head and squeaked "I'm not!", in what could pass for moderate speaking volume.

<<Torry, there's only one thing you should be saying to these bozos!>>

The green navi nodded and bit her lip, quelling the jitters a little. She opened her mouth and, trying to sound just the teeniest bit heroic, croaked:

"B-bubblepult: R-r-r-rolling Shot!"

...And let loose.

---TORRENT'S TURN SUMMARY---

[2+]: Snipe (+ Seeking, Negates Invisibility and High Altitude)

[3]: Double Attack - RollingLog1 (50dmg + Ground Attack + Wide Attack (2), Wood, C) -> Stove Group (Miner, Oldstoves)
Torrent put up her signature barrier and engaged the viruses with a few RollingLogs. The Miner took its shovel and quickly dug underground. The logs rolled over him, but still managed to miss. However, they struck the two OldStoves. The Stoves were barreled over by the huge treetrunks, crushing them and plunging the cave into darkness again. With only the head of a Spikey for illumination.

A small, electronic beeping sound could be heard from underground in places before the Miner re-emerged from the ground. By the sputtering light Torrent could see a large metallic disk in its hands with a tiny, pulsing, glowing light. If she knew what an explosive mine was, she would probably be scared to take another step. It seems the Miner had seeded a portion of the battlefield with mines.

However, she might need to move as the PulseBats flapped down on her and unleashed sonic shrieks in her direction. One of the three struck her barrier, causing it to ripple against the effects of the terrible noise. The bats began to flap harder after, looking as if they plan to gain altitude and get high above the battlefield.

The floor is now lava!

Torrent was, indeed, terrified of taking another step, lest that be the last step her foot would ever have the pleasure of taking.

<<Don't worry Torry, mines are easy!>> Hippie advised in her lilting locution, <<Just crawl over them!>>

"Which is, of course, exactly what I won't be doing, thanks." Torrent groused with no small amount of exasperation.

Suddenly, the world became a wild tempest of wings and fangs and high pitched shrieking. So startled by the batty assault, Torrent barely registered that one of the screams was her own. She flailed aimlessly at the offending atmosphere as her barrier deflected a particularly brutal shock, rippling in displeasure.

<<What would you call that? A batstorm? Baticane? Batnado?>>

"If I could be so rude as to interrupt your extremely important musings for a moment," Torrent cowered beneath her worryingly wobbly ward, "could you bloody well give me something to deal with this already?!"

Torrent felt her arm becoming weighed down with the reassuring mass of...

...that savagely dangerous, could-kill-me-if-I-drop-it-on-my-toes, fan-sword thing.

Torrent grasped the blade's handle with the sort of gingerness one would employ to hold a leaking stick of dynamite.

"Holy mainframes, Hippie! I could kill myself with this!"

<<Well it's either death by that or death by them!>> Hippie admonished with an air of cheerful bluntness, <<Go on, Sissy Lissy! Give it a swing!>>

The bats, perhaps sensing the terrible power hidden within the bubble shield, decided that now would be a brilliant time to relocate to a higher altitude.

"Alright, fine!" A little hysterical, Torrent caved in to her friend's eager persistence.

Oh please, oh please don't let it hit me in the face!

Torrent grasped the large fan and swung it twice in an arc, up and around her person, with as much strength as her trembling body could muster. A massive blast of swirling, tearing wind exploded out at the trio of bats circling her head. The backwash of the blast pushed down on the navi forcing Torrent onto one knee, but not before she hastily held the fan weapon away from her precious personage.

<<Sweet, sparkling silverbacks at a Sunday shindig!>> Hippie expressed her admiration with enthusiastic fervor, <<That was amazing! Do it again!>>

"Like hell!" Torrent cursed, tears of fright and shock terrorising her eyes. "I've survived almost dying so many times today that I'll be damned if I end up killing myself with a damn paper cut!"

As if to visualise her exclamation point, Torrent gracelessly flung the WindRacket away from her with shaken severity. And the weapon, although feeling a little insulted, dissipated harmlessly. Hippie pouted a bit at missing out on further windy mayhem, but brightened up to offer Torrent something a little more familiar. The navi rubbed her flooded eyes and damp nose with her cherished Marublaster which, although not entirely reliable, felt comforting on her arm and added a few fuzzy lines of mirth to her rather ragged features. Taking a deep breath, she propped up the electric weapon with the barrel of the Heatshot, steadying her aim and giving herself some light to see by. Torrent had her sights set on the humanoid-ish virus that had scared her stiff with it's furious vendetta against working legs. Paying attention to its movements, she was careful to preserve the electrical charge for when the Miner next appeared from below the ground, taking the shot as it popped into view.

Swinging the large fan-like weapon above her head, Torrent managed to strike one of the bats dead on, deleting it. She missed another with her wild flailing, and the third managed to dodge out of the way. Both remaining bats were pushed further towards the ceiling by Gust-driven power, reaching their High Altitude without much problem. Soon enough though, they would drop back down again with their horrible screeching.

The Miner dug back under the ground again and planted some more mines. When it appeared, Torrent had her trusty Marublaster1 ready. She shot at it with her high accuracy and struck it dead center. The Miner twitched violently and made viral sounds of pain as it was shocked heavily. After a moment of smoke coming off its body, its face cracks and falls off like a mask, revealing the face of a cat!

((Ack, thanks for setting me straight. I assumed it was a sword chip for some reason.))

...Cat?

Torrent looked upon the miner virus with bewilderment, and then at her fading Marublaster with concern. She started to wonder that, although she had great faith in the little electric cannon, perhaps it could be a tad... cruel.

<<Oh my gooooooosh!!!>> Torrent cringed, clamping the sides of her head to protect herself from the excitable, piercing squeal. Hippie obviously found the weirdness to be rather thrilling. <<Cute kitty! Kitty cat cat!>>

"Um. Maybe I should... put it out of its misery...?"

<<What!?>> Another vociferous shriek tore through Torrent's audio receptors, followed by the tinkling crash one would associate with a dropped glass of liquid. She hoped Hippie hadn't gotten her hands on anything sugary, for both their sakes.

<<Don't you dare lay a finger on it missy! I bet it loves being a cat!>>

Torrent eyed the miner virus. It appeared quite stunned, if not traumatised, by its sudden transmogrification.

"Somehow I doubt it."

Something large and leathery flopped onto the top of Torrent's rapidly thinning bubble shield. It slid off the crackling surface, flopping wetly onto the floor before her. Once she had stopped screaming, Torrent uncovered her eyes to see the torn, pixelating remains of one of the PulseBats as it dematerialised into wasted data. It sent a shiver up her digital spine and she fervently wished that she hadn't gotten that awful fan blade.

<<Woah. That took a long time to fall! It must have been blasted up by the windy thing!>> Hippie supplied, more intrigued than horrified.

Torrent looked up. The bats that had managed to avoid the deadly wind flittered among the stalactites on the dark ceiling. Torrent imagined them swooping down and tearing her head off... And then tried of imagine happier things like ice cream and fluffy bunnies because Oh God!

<<Looks like we'll need all the firepower we can get. Here, Torry.>>

Torrents right arm bubbled into the shape of a Shotgun, whilst her left remained activated with the Heatshot.

<<Those two have spread, which means you can hit two things if they're behind each other!>> Torrent was pleasantly surprised that her focus-addled ally had contributed something useful. <<But they can't both be behind each other, because that means there'd be infinite copies of them all in a row! And then you'll end up with a Bloody Mary old time!>>

Well, navis can dream.

Spreading her legs into a power pose and stifling her errant quivering, Torrent took aim with her two weapons. She had to draw upon every gunner's instinct she could muster if she was going to make these shots. The bats were small, quick, far away and in cover half the time. If she were to score hits to both of them with both weapons, she would have to be either extremely lucky or... Well, actually, that was the only way.

Exercising patience and control over her breathing (and shaking body) Torrent had to take a risk and wait for the bats to make a mistake, if they either flew too close together or came charging down at her. Letting her instincts judge the ideal moment, Torrent opened fire with both her weapons.

Not one for taking chances, Torrent summoned her rusty, round shield. Once upon a time this was the only thing that stood between her and oblivion, that is until she was eventually given the tools to fight back (much to her chagrin) and developed her own bubbly means of protection.

Later Torrent would say she was defiantly holding her ground, but really she was so terrified her legs had locked in place.

---TORRENT'S TURN SUMMARY---

[1]: Shotgun (50 dmg + Spread 1) -> Pulsebat (PulseBatB)
[1+]: Marksmanship (+1 Shot Accuracy)
[1+]: Snipe (+ Seeking, Negates Invisibility and High Altitude)

[2]: Heatshot (40 dmg + Spread 1) -> PulseBatB
[2+]: Marksmanship (+1 Shot Accuracy)

[3]: Shield -> Aimed Toward PulseBats
The freshly-feline Miner yowls in displeasure as it disappears under the ground to plant more mines; the ambient beeping within the cave increases ever so slightly as yet more terrain is compromised. The PulseBats drop down from the shadowy ceiling, one of them immediately jumping the gun and sending a sonic screech...very literally screaming through the dark cave towards Torrent. The attack connects with her Barrier, dispelling it with an annoying high-pitched ringing.

The Navi retaliates with a Shotgun just as the second PulseBat descends, catching the both of them in the resulting blast. Her Heatshot, unfortunately for her, goes winging right by the viruses, the fireball sending a ring of light shooting deep into the cave before guttering out. In reply, the second PulseBat goes on the attack, only for it to be stopped on Torrent's rusty shield. The cave is silent thereafter, but for the ominous beeping of the hidden Mines.

The pair had done what they could. The number of enemies they had faced stretched the meager supply of ammunition available to them. Torrent, a new study to the field of war, had been flailing and using her chips sub-optimally. And now she had to rely on the dregs of her arsenal. This was what she had been most afraid of. Without the means to fight, there was little left in the way of an untimely deletion for her.

Twang!

<<Last chips, Torry! I know you can make them count!>>

The Heatshot was gone, replaced with the basic Cannon chip. The loss of light made the viruses even harder to spot, but that was just how the chips fell. Torrents right arm morphed into a set of exceedingly sharp talons.

<<Make me proud, girl!>>

The shrill shriek of the wounded, yet still absolutely terrifying bats, compelled the cowardly navi into reflexive, nervously-vibrating action.

"H-h-y-y-d-d-r-r-o-o P-p-o-o-w-w-e-e-r-r~!"

The broken bubble barrier burst into life once more. It wasn't going to last long and neither would her courage; they were both a finite resource.

Merciless, the bats swooped in to feast on her digital blood, or whatever her body's equivalent possessed. Still rooted to the spot, Torrent lined up her last remaining ranged weapon and tried her best to keep it between her and the viruses.

The cannon's recoil shuddered along Torrent's arm, the shaking merely adding to her own practically vibrating nerves. The clamor of the shot echoed around the cavern, shaking stones loose from the walls and probably alerting every virus within the cavern depths. Torrent broke into a cold sweat as the cannon chip faded from her arm. Without a reliable gun at her side, she felt even more vulnerable than usual.

<<Alright, Torry! Just like last time!>> Hippie coached from her enviably safe position on the other side of a jack-in port. <<Grab some stones and get tossing!Three points if you hit them in the eye!>>

Torrent, cowed beneath her bubble barrier, was fortunate to have an abundance of stone within arms reach. The keen-edged claws sliced easily through a nearby stone formation. It wasn't the ideal solution, but lobbing rocks was all Torrent was left with. Throwing was nowhere near her specialty, especially with the intended targets flitting about near the cave roof.

[3]: Rageclaw, Throw Stalactite (20 dmg + Impact, B)-> PulseBatC

[Cooling] Hydro Power, 2 Turns Left
Torrent's barrier springs to life, promising protection against any attacks lacking in NorthWind or Impact properties. The PulseBats, upon realization that their brand of attacking lacks either quality, promptly escape to the ceiling, where they would attempt to remain in relative safety.

Relative, of course, being the keyword, as Torrent's Cursor-augmented Cannon laughs at the first PulseBat's attempts to flee, and pegs it right between its luminous red eyes. The sound of complex image graphics fading into little streams of 0s and 1s may be the most wonderful sound the fearful Navi had ever heard up to that point...at least, until a masterful throw with a RageClaw some seconds later causes the second virus to let out a most undignified squeak, just before it's annihilated by a fear-fueled mass of rock to the face.

And thus, the only virus left in the cave is the feline Miner, who growls and hisses at Torrent for all it's worth before diving back underground, planting a mine somewhere in the cave for want of anything else to do. And what, the question begged, would Torrent do now that it was up against a sole, mostly-defenseless virus?
