Network Hike

(I really need to take my own advice sometimes)

Fists alit in flames, Delta took the initiative to attack the Swordy charging headlong at him, but the Swordy would dodge out of the way just in the nick of time, barely avoiding getting burned away in the flames Delta held. But before he could turn to the Bandcoon, he already had viruses encroaching on him, including it. The small Racoon virus attempting grand larceny, but barely missing as the Skeeters had swarmed in on him, both swarms within biting distance of the navi

Though it wasn't long before the Bandcoon got a taste of the firehit it had attempted to steal, leading to it getting smacked across the face and sent out and away (120!), disappearing into a heap of ash. The Teddy was closing in and with it's claws out, raked across Delta's shield, causing the metal to crumple away in a useless heap, leading him to blow away the teddy with a point blank rocket to the face, deleting it on the spot (100). The two Skeeters would make their move as he had turned to the Teddy, beginning to swarm him and make their attempts to drain his energy, leading to one swarm getting lucky enough to prick away some of Delta's HP (30). Unfortunately for them, they were close enough that Delta would unleash hell on them, one swarm going down quickly under his attacks (20, 20) but the other would barely be out of the way of one of his shots, barely surviving the twin shots (20), but at the same time, the Swordy would get it's revenge as it teleported up towards Delta and swiped it's sword across his stomach (10) and give him a nasty wooden cut before moving back to where it was, within reach of Delta.

BandcoonBandcoon (Bandcoon)

Bandcoons are gray raccoon-like creatures, around 30 inches in height. They possess black stripes around their body, aside from their short, almost stub-like legs. Their faces are usually unseen, as they're covered in a red mask with string decorations. Their tails are twice as long as their actual bodies, and are usually curved into a question mark shape. At first this may seem like a simple design choice, but the tail is actually prehensile, and Bandcoon cleverly use it to steal chip data from Navis. Bandcoons' speed and small size combine to make them surprisingly difficult to hit while moving, and are even agile enough to turn sharply with little problem. However, if caught standing still, they're practically sitting ducks. However, when they're not using chips, they always prefer to move when possible. Their main tactic is to roll around and confound the enemy with their speed, then move in and swipe them with their tail, using it like a hook to grab data not directly tied to them, namely Battlechips. They can then use it themselves, at reduced power, as a free action. All other effects of the chips still apply, including pre-requisites to use the chip (i.e. Spice still needs Grass terrain, MachineSword still requires that the enemy be stunned). Higher level Bandcoon are aware of such conditions, and will try to satisfy the requirements if at all possible. If the enemy has no Battlechips, Bandcoons get extremely aggravated, and will ram an enemy in anger and desperation. However, they severely dislike doing this, and will only use this attack as a last resort for when they have no chips.

((EXPLOSIONS!))
The moment that the medical kit appeared, Delta popped it open to trigger its healing effect. Summoning another Shield onto his right arm, the netnavi evaluated the situation. Dancing backwards in an evasive maneuver, he spoke, "Sword please."

"Sword chip data incoming." Henry's response was swift, but Delta didn't activate the chip data immediately, instead turning his buster on the remaining mosquitos with two more shots. Then, he activated the sword, the weapon appearing in his hand even as his buster vanished. With that, Delta carefully approached the sword-wielding virus, ready to at least try and avoid any attacks that it made against him. As he reached it, the netnavi swung his weapon out, trying to end the fight decisively.

Delta was quick to heal up with his own medkit as he prepared his defenses, the navi would be ready to defend as the swordy rushed him again, a long slash barely avoided by the navi as he sent another duo of shots at the swarm of Skeeters, clipping them with one shot and missing with the other, but it was enough to send them spiraling down towards the floor (20) and end their annoyance. The swordy, watching as the last of it's allies were dead, quickly followed up as it moved forward, matching Delta's movements, swinging it's sword wide as Delta reciprocated, the Swordy's sword piercing into the shield as Delta in turn before getting sliced across it's chest, sending it falling backwards and ending the fight.

Battle 2 Win!

Rewards: 400z, 19 bugfrags, Skeeter Bounty+2

((450z -> 850z))
((131 BF -> 150 BF))
((Bounty: Skeeter; 1 -> 3))

Collecting the reward data, Delta looked it over. "Darn, no chips. I was kinda hoping to get something from that Swordy." With that said, the netnavi started looking for the next battle.

((Battle 3?))
Delta could feel himself being watched by the inhabitants of the area, in the grass and trees he could feel all eyes on him, while the buzzing noises around him only grew more and more intense and louder. It wouldn't be long however before the navi would find himself in front of a giant tree, boughs while high, were not insurmountable. But this would lead him to getting jumped again by the local virus population. A Shrubby and Metool duo popping up from the grass, even though the latter was trying to dig into the grass as some sort of faux safety. Flopping up from a puddle of mud nearby, a Mudfeesh would be seen in it's natural habitat ready to "play" as it were. As a Bombcorn would hop out from behind the tree and begin hopping towards Delta...and finally, that familiar buzzing noise would come out from atop the boughs of the tree, a swarm of Skeeters honing in on Delta's signature.

If there is nothing on the field to use as cover against an enemy, and the only other viruses on the field are Shrubbies or viruses that cannot provide cover against attacks, they will stop attacking and attempt to flee starting next turn. Delta activated his shield as the battle began, raising his buster to fire two shots at the skeeter with his other hand. That done, considered the situation before speaking, "I think a TwinFang and Shotgun would do well here."

"Got it. Chip data incoming." Henry didn't take long to select the chips, catching on to at least some of his netnavi's plan.

Raising his buster again, Delta unleashed the first chip, sending a pair of fangs towards the corn and fish. "Thank you." The netnavi sidestepped, moving to throw off any incoming attacks, before raising his buster again and firing at the metool. If the netnavi's aim was true, the shotgun chip should penetrate the metool regardless of whether it was guarding, and strike the bush behind it. Finally, he fired his buster's standard shots at any viruses that had yet to be deleted.

Summoning his shield to his side, the navi was quickly assaulted by the surrounding viruses, the Bombcorn coughed up a large kernel of corn in Delta's direction, the resulting explosion however just going too far and missing the navi entirely. The Shrubby would however be more adventurous and make an attempt on his person, sending a rolling log out...and completely missing as it just rolled harmlessly to the side. The navi, however, would get both shots off on his target, sending the swarm of Skeeters to the ground without a second thought (20, 20) and removing the airborne threat. The Met and Mudfeesh watched as the Bombcorn began to move, intent on evading his next strike. As the fangs flew at their intended targets, the bombcorn would get skewered through, but the Mudfeesh would flop harmlessly out of the way of the attack (70).

This lead the Met to make an attempt on Delta's life in turn, leading to his knee getting clipped mid-dodge, but, unfortunately for the met it's life was ended in turn as the shotgun clipped it and the Shrubby in turn (50, 50). This would lead the Mudfeesh to flop up to Delta and smack against his shield twice as it in turn got clipped by the resulting buster shots, Delta still coming out ahead as the Mudfeesh was on it's last legs whilst he was relatively unharmed. Minus the mud caking his boots and seeping into his feet, slowing his movements just a little bit...

Delta didn't even bother trying to dodge, just taking careful aim with his buster before firing two shots at the weakened virus as it flopped about. Just to be safe, he activated his shield program afterwards, holding the defensive measure between himself and the fish to intercept its attack if it survived.

Should the muddy virus somehow survive those shots, likely by avoiding them, Delta would repeat the procedure of taking aim, but keep firing after the first few shots, hoping to mop up with sheer volume of fire if nothing else.

If there is nothing on the field to use as cover against an enemy, and the only other viruses on the field are Shrubbies or viruses that cannot provide cover against attacks, they will stop attacking and attempt to flee starting next turn. Later versions of the Shrubby virus carry rockcube chip data, and will use that to make new cover when none is available.

"MudFlop. Honestly, I can't say that I'm enthusiastic about the idea of using a literal belly-flop to attack, but it at least comes with a terrain change." Delta put the chip in the pair's folder; it was at least something that they could use to change the terrain.

"Well, we can always try trading it out for something else." Delta only responded to Henry's statement with a noncommittal hum as the netnavi examined the tree at the center of the battlefield. The skeeters in this battle had come from the upper branches of it if he remembered correctly, and he wanted to at least try and see if there was anything else there.

((Examine Tree))
Within the branches, there was nothing that would indicate anything worthwhile, but as he searched around the tree he could see a small GMD within the tree's trunk, thankfully, within jump height. It was just barely sticking out enough that he could claim it's rewards, but, it looked a bit...fucky...red lines along the GMD's surface, it was hard to tell if it was openable in it's state, but there was always the chance he could touch it and deal with the consequences later.
Delta pondered the quite frankly suspicious looking GMD in front of him for a few moments, then pulled out an untrap chip and pushed on the surface of the mystery data with it.

((Attempt to use Untrap on GMD))
With caution proving the more sensible course, Delta pressed the untrap program to the nearest surface of the crystal. There was a brief moment where the red, fibrous veins twisted and writhed, but then they began to curl back free the data crystal and relinquish it, seemingly safely. As it came from from the trunk of the tree, the rest of the opening process worked through without issue and the data unpacked itself to deliver a small packet of chip data into Delta's waiting hand. He was able to step back with it, unharmed, and the tree seemed no worse for wear now either. Crisis averted, perhaps.

"Oh I like this one..." Delta grinned as he saw the contents of the GMD. "Wood Tower battlechip." Still smiling, the netnavi started searching for the next group of viruses.

Continuing on through the foliage and the surrounding forests, the buzzing of the Skeeter viruses growing more and more intense as he continued on. Bushes and foliage scattered about on his little (mostly) unhindered walk through the forests before being stopped by an admittedly hilarious sight. A Mushy, the little "ninja" mushroom virus, hopping across a checkerboarded field of grass and soil panels with a Momogra digging through the terrain as usual, the mole virus popping up from it's hole every so often as it was looking for the very badly hidden Needler in a bush. Unfortunately this little sight would be cut short as the Momogra would spot Delta and quickly warn the other two in turn, shovel in hand and gesturing towards the navi. At least the Skeeter virus he was hunting down would come down from the surrounding treetops and hovered above the now annoyed Mushy, battle routines beginning for Delta.

Momogras move by tunneling through the ground. They poke their heads up just far enough from time to time to see where the enemy is, but they are still protected from most forms of attack. Drop attacks, Bomb attacks (which fall out of the air after being thrown), and Ground attacks damage them in this state. Other attacks executed from a high angle/altitude also work. All movements performed by a Momogra are considered a dodge, as they occur underground, and out of sight. Momogras only attack in response to having an attack launched in their direction, and only if they have an action remaining for that turn. Momogras attack by instantly tunneling to the panel behind the enemy, popping out of the ground, and striking with a shovel. A Momogra is completely vulnerable to any form of attack during its own atack, and until it moves again following that attack. The movement prior to the attack does not require an action, but movement afterwards does. The attack cannot execute if the panel behind the target is a liquid terrain type, Metal, Broken, or Missing. The attack also will not execute if there is something currently occupying the panel they would be attacking from. If the attack cannot execute, the Momogra will not move. In the case of Glass and Cracked terrain, the Momogras will still attempt to attack, but suffer the consequences of doing do as those panels will break and damage the Momogra, also causing the attack to fail. Momogra get 1 free movement per turn at the start of the turn before their first action.

-- Battle 4 Ready? Start!! --
Delta examined the quartet of viruses before him, but swiftly decided on a course of action. Raising his hand, the netnavi formed his buster, aimed straight towards his bounty target. Firing twice towards the swarm of insects, before his netop called out.

"Let's try one of the new chips, WoodTower in."

Delta nodded in assent before allowing his buster to vanish, the navi's hand starting to glow slightly with a green light. Lifting his hand slightly before dropping to slam his fist into the ground of the battlefield. As his knuckles impacted the grass, a massive stake emerged from the ground in front of Delta...and then another, and a third, and so on, marching towards the mushroom.

Standing up, Delta activated his shield program, shifting his other arm to hold the defensive measure in front of him. A moment later, his left arm came up, the buster already covering it again as it was raised to fire towards one of the bushes. The netnavi shifted on his feet, ready to move out of the path of an attack or two that might come in retaliation.

With his main quarry in sight, Delta was the first to act, taking two quick shots at the swarm of buzzing skeeters that had started to cluster around the Mushy's head – seemingly much to its increased agitation. One shot connected but the other didn't seem to hit the swarm entity cleanly, leaving the remainder to buzz and shift with an increased whining.

From one of the bushes, a sudden burst of thin, wooded flechette rounds fired out directly towards delta; they made a broad spray as the Needler appeared to be having some slight issue aiming from inside its hide-away, but there were enough of the tiny darts that a few still managed to connect with the navi. Barely a scratch.

Delta had a far more powerful wood attack to launch of his own, but it proved unwieldy for him to get a handle on. The wooden towers erupting in their line certainly looked impressively dangerous, but a lack of control meant they couldn't seem to connect with his intended target, or anything else. Still, it was his first time using the chip; maybe it would get easier with practice.

The remainder of the skeeter swarm choose the wake of this destructive, yet derailed attack to fly in and attempt to drain some of Delta's delicious navi data, but the navi was able to raise his shield in time and, by the wonder of net physics, fend of the insect swarm with it well enough. He barely had a moment to manage this, however, before the sneaky Mushy Virus was suddenly in front of him, teleporting across the field in a blink. Its eyes glinted with, before its whole body compressed, expelling a noxious cloud of dizzying spores around itself. Delta got his shield up to this attack as well, but despite the defence holding off the damage of the attack, the synapse-scrambling, confusing sensation of the mushroom spores still managed to infiltrate his body.

A moment alter, the Mushy was gone again, teleporting back to its original position, but on the bright side, Delta could notice that the virus seemed to spare no love for the nearby skeeter swarm in the process of its attack on Delta; the remaining mozzies had dropped out of the air as the spore cloud engulfed them as well, and were giving their last dying twitches now. Something in the Mushy's expression carried a note of 'good riddance' to it.

The momogra that had been watching this all unfold from the safety of its burrow took this particular opportunity to find an even safer vantage point, and burrowed away quickly to hid in another one of the bushes dotting the field while Delta turned his attention on the Needler virus, and the bush it was hiding in. Two quick shots deprived the turret of its leafy protection, and though it fired back rapidly Delta was ready this time, and successfully dodged the entire spray of wooden darts that came his way.

Progress was being made, but as Delta tried to assess his next move, the creeping, crackling dizzy feeling from the mushroom cloud's spores was growing bad enough to make his vision swim, and simple tasks like even aiming his buster were swiftly becoming an uncoordinated fight against twitching limbs that didn't feel like they were responding quite right. The Mushy watched for a moment, then teleported again, this time to a comfy hiding place inside the other remaining bush.

Delta's arm shook as he raised his buster, the navi attempting to steady his shot with his other hand after a moment. With his vision shaking as much as it was, he couldn't be sure that taking aim was doing much good, but he didn't have a way of more effectively fighting the spores.

His head swam as he fired on the now exposed needler. As irritating as it was to be chipping away at his foes with his buster, the netnavi wasn't sure that he could afford to risk wasting battlechips while he was so discombobulated. Ste...well, okay, stumbling to the side might maybe help avoid an attack, but it could just as well send the navi in to one.

As he mostly regained his balance, Delta attempted to activate the shield program again, hoping that the defensive option would help him to avoid an attack or two even while he was unsteady on his feet. Shifting his right arm to more firmly plant the barrier between himself and the viruses, the netnavi raised his buster and opened fire on the needler with a barrage of shots, hoping to make up for inaccuracy with volume of fire.

With his senses scrambled from the mushy's befuddling spore cloud, Delta opted to stick to his buster for the time being, and not risk worse malfunctions with other chips. There was the sense that what he was seeing as he aimed his buster carefully might not be exactly accurate to what was actually in front of him, with occasionally fuzzing shifts in the terrain and the surrounding viruses.

A brief salvo of wood shots came at him suddenly; some missed and some landed, and though they were barely enough o cause a scratch, they a least confirmed for Delta where the actual needle turret was and he took a couple of quick shots – or tried to; a crackle of uncomfortable sensation accompanied his buster firing and it only released one burst of energy, rather than two, though the shot itself clearly connected and let Delta know that he'd found his mark amidst swimming vision.

His further attempts at evading the surprisingly hostile mushy didn't mount to much more than an ungainly stumble, but it seemed that in this particular moment, Delta's luck was in; his movements were perhaps a bit more erratic than anticipated and when the mushroom virus teleported close to release another blast of spores around itself, it misjudged where Delta had stumbled to, and its dangerous cloud missed him.

The needler was not dissuaded, however, and tried to capitalise on the navi's temporary vulnerability; it rushed forward in a sudden charge just as Delta raised his shield, which to good fortune, actually worked properly. The impact was solid but the shield held as the force of the collision shoved Delta back several feet. The needler completed its charge and took a couple of quick shots, trying to pin down its target now that it had him in sights, but only one of them was on target; it struck the shield, knocking it out of commission once more, though it had done its job all the same.

In the close-quarters face-off, Delta raised his buster to take another series of shots at the needler; more trouble with the weapon prevented one of the first pair from firing, but both shots in his second salvo went off without trouble; the debilitating status ailment was finally clearing from his system, it seemed.

The mushy was having none of this, and warped in close, right in front of Delta again as his vision finally cleared. He got a look at the vindictive malice glinting in its eyes as it readied another spore cloud – seemingly with complete disregard for the other virus that was also right by it, once again. By some fluke of fortune, Delta had enough time in the moment to stumble back from the cloud of spores just as it rolled outward, managing to cover himself from it and stop any of the nasty attack infiltrating his systems, just barely... The needler, unfortunately for it, was not so lucky. Already badly damaged by Delta's successive shots, the mushroom fumes wafted over it and settled with a vaguely glitchy crackle. Sparks jumped, gears ground, and with a couple of brief sputters and whirrs the needle turret went still. A small plume of grey smoke began to rise from it as the rest of its form began to crumble into data. The Mushy seemed to shrug, if a virus with no real shoulders could be said to do so, and teleported back to the hiding spot of its grassy bush, watching Delta with calculating malice. It really seemed to think the other viruses here were just so much dead weight.

While the exchange was going on, it seemed like the momogra virus was, for the most part, staying well clear of the altercation – it watched and waited from the safety of its burrow, but didn't seem to want to risk an attack without prior aggression directed at it first, especially with the Mushy acting as unilaterally violent as it was.

MushyMushy (Mushy)

Mushies only appear in battle if 15% or more of the terrain is Grass. Mushies can only move across Grass, Mud, and Soil terrain types. If, for any reason, none of these terrain types exist on the field, these viruses will be unable to move until the end of the turn. Mushies will then attempt to change the terrain to Grass, or flee if they cannot. Mushies move by teleporting.

Delta hadn't really taken notice when the Mushy had fragged the Skeeter swarm, given that he had been hit with the same cloud of spores, but he noticed the Needler go down to another cloud...and picked up on the pattern. "That Mushy is killing the other viruses?"

Henry slotted in a FireHit as he responded, "Yeah, I was vaguely aware that something like that could happen, but this is definitely the first time that I've seen it. FireHit one incoming."

Delta didn't wait for Henry to finish speaking, shifting his footing even as he threw a punch, sending a flaming fist hurtling towards the offending virus. Unfortunately for it, the Mushy's own aggression had left Delta with only it and the Momogra for targets...the Momogra which had yet to so much as fire upon the navi, and was burrowed deep enough that most attacks would miss anyway.

Delta followed up by dancing to the side, hopefully avoiding any more confusion inducing spores from what was seemingly the only hostile virus remaining.
