To Hell with this

"Duke," Pianissimo said over a private channel as he reached the top of the stairs and took in the situation, "Get me any information you can about those weapons." Though as calm as usual, he tried to make evident a sense of urgency.

"Why?" Duke asked, obviously confused. "This looks like a forge or something to me..."

Pianissimo cut him off. "Looks more like someone's breaking them to me." He had begun to talk faster. "Just do what you can with them. Especially the one with the dead navi in front of it, that may be what our friend is after." He turned to look at the cleric. "And send something with a kick to it, we're working on a time limit."

In the real world, Duke went to work, slotting in several chips. Pianissimo brought up the data for each, nodding. The first one, at least, would be very useful indeed. He knelt to the ground, planting one hand right next to him then removing it. From the point where his hand had touched the ground, a candle rose as though reversing the burning process, then ignited itself. Feeling the warmth of the candle's regenerative energy, he gave another slight nod, satisfied. Following this, however, his body faded completely to black, taking the shape of, then sinking into the shadow at the base of the candle. A mere second later, he vanished, leaving only the restorative candle burning in his place.

He reappeared another second later, his presence signaled by a series of two slashes at the farthest of the sword navis. Following the attacks, the assassin landed behind it, already moving away. A small ball of what appeared to be metal with three cylindrical capsules attached to it appeared in his hand as he stopped moving, which he hurled at his previous target. As soon as the ball left his hand, however, he vanished again.

The second time he reappeared, he was an even distance between the original target and its closest ally. As he was still materializing again, he swung his katana between them, the blade glowing white with chip data. At the end of the swing, the blade flashed before settling on an orange aura wider than the weapon itself. Pianissimo traced back over the path of the stepsword swing, slashing at both navis again. After doing so, he flipped away, anticipating a counterattack, before skidding to a crouching halt several feet away.

Using Pianissimo's attack to his advantage, Duke brought up the battlefield on his computer, selecting each of the weapons mounted on the steel cubes and trying to get a reading on them.

6. WideBlade: 110 slashing to SwordNavis C-D
*Swordplay: Free dodge after two melee attacks
Duke's scans produced interesting results. The Old Broadsword and Relic Blade both turned out to be nothing but mere objects. The Ancient Sword had been swapped for a partially damaged LongSword battlehip with 5 uses remaining. The Azoth and Cursed Blade both returned complex signals akin to programs of a higher order than mere objects or battlechips. The Antique Pole-Sword likewise turned out to be an object, and a completely unusable one at that.

-------------

Just before Pianissimo executed his Cloak and Dagger signature move, he saw the female cleric he'd been accompanying parry both FireSword attacks directed at her with both speed and precision. As he began his shadow shifting teleport, he heard the cracking sound of swords breaking. Pianissimo reappeared behind his intended target, his blade quickly found its mark twice in rapid succession before the SwordNavi could react to it.

As Pianissimo stepped back from the SwordNavi, summoning an energybomb as he did so, the target looked back over its shoulder at him and began to turn to face him. That proved to be a fatal mistake for the SwordNavi.... As Pianissimo threw the bomb, a small, black, and sword-wielding form moved quickly and quietly into the assassin's view just beyond the SwordNavi. It ducked the sword slash and moved past knife thrust follow-up made by the other nearby SwordNaviEX with smooth, flowing motion.... Then with that same fluidity, it blurringly executed a counter attack, striking back once... twice... thrice at both Navis before either could act. Then the energybomb struck its helpless target, the explosion obscuring both it and the fast moving aggressor behind it.

The SwordNaviEX next to its bombed compatriot attempted to counter attack the threat to them both, and seemingly failed to connect with its FireSword. The Navi took another series of slashes for its effort before being hurled backwards through the air by a final swing from its adversary. The Navi Pianissimo had targeted likewise flew backwards out of the blast zone, and began disintegrating into deletion.

Pianissimo appeared next to the remaining (and airborne) SwordNaviEX, and executed the slash of his StepSword. The slash connected, and the Navi dissolved into deletion almost instantly. His follow up counter-crosscut, executed reflexively, passed harmlessly through empty air.

Looking out past where his terminated targets used to stand, Pianissimo saw the Cleric parry another sword attack by a third EX SwordNavi. She brought the burning blade of her FireSword down with the natural recoil from the parry. She then performed an instep and began to execute a passing slash with one fluid motion when a beam lanced out from the doorway they'd used to enter the room and struck her. Her burning blade dropped to the ground with a clatter as her form turned instantly white, then dissolved quickly into nothing. Just like that.

"Twenty five grand richer with a single shot. Not bad." Came a familiar sounding male voice from the direction of the shot. "But fragging this punk too will really make my day."

Pianissimo looked at the source of the sound, and barely managed to avoid getting shot himself by leaping back and away. As he landed, he recognized the gunman from the previous battle, only this time he wielded a chip rifle.... And he'd brought help in the form of two red-and-black colored HeelNavis who stood before the sniper with Iron Shields.

"Ready for another round?" The gunner added as he slapped a fresh clip into his gun.

'Standard weapon objects. No further information.'

"Damn it," Duke muttered under his breath. He wasn't sure what he expected, though he had hoped for a little more information than that. Hoping for something else from the next, he selected the ancient sword. As he did so, however, he realized it didn't look quite as ancient as he had thought.

'Longsword battlechip. Integrity at 56%. Owner unknown.' the computer read. So, Duke thought, a standard longsword, and a dead navi in front of its pedestal. In that case, where had the blade that had originally been there gone? Pondering this, he moved on and selected the Azoth, then the Cursed Edge, each of which yielded the same result. Duke's eyes widened as he examined the signals from each, far more complex than any object or even any battlechip. 'Data patterns unreadable. Upgrade recommended,' displayed the computer.

"Shut up," Duke said again, closing the window. "Stupid computer, telling me to upgrade in the middle of a battle situation." He shook his head, selecting the last weapon object. His eyes narrowed again as it read out 'Standard weapon object. Unusable. No further information.' Closing that window in disgust, he turned back to the battle, just in time to see the gunner Pianissimo had dropped through the floor shoot the cleric he had assigned his navi to protect. One shot, and it was already over. "Damn it!" he exclaimed, slamming a fist against the desk...then pulling it away again to make sure he hadn't broken the fragile surface.

"Time limit indeed," Pianissimo heard Duke say. He closed his eyes for a second, wondering why he was so frustrated. He had practically had him protect the cleric on a whim, why was he now acting like it was so important?

"Duke?" he asked over a private channel, walking over to the fallen firesword and dropping to one knee next to it. "Shut up."

"Right," the netop said. Pianissimo muttered something that sounded like "finally", then glanced sideways at the firesword, keeping the gunner and his shields in his field of vision. Reaching out and grasping the hilt, he opened the line again. "Orders?" he asked.

"Kill them."

"By your command..." the assassin said.
___

*Tactical Movement: Approach the firesword, pick up the firesword.

-Splice-
Pianissimo picks up the FireSword. It, curiously, weighs very little, although the blade is larger then average (though not exaggeratedly so). As he grabs the sword, the sounds of a gun being loaded reach his ears, followed by a red dot quickly tracking across the floor towards him.

"Got it," Duke commented, sending the areagrab and a chip Pianissimo didn't recognize. "Traded the Magnum to some...rhyming looney...for this thing. Should help."

Pianissimo blinked, wondering why he was dealing with a 'rhyming looney'. Shrugging it off, he sheathed his katana, still holding the burning blade he had picked up behind him. It seemed strange, the blade was larger than average, but seemed...light. Lighter than even a normal, smaller blade. The scanners in his helmet were also picking up strange readings from it, HP readings instead of durability. Before he could consider what this might mean, he caught sight of a red dot tracing over the floor between the gunner and him. Markcannon, he thought instinctively, raising his now free hand. A strong wind blew into the entrance, forming into a vicious cyclone ending in his hand. Though he had to trust Duke's judgment on the unfamiliar chip, he saw why it 'should help'.

Before the windstorm could completely blow out, Pianissimo took a step to the side, and vanished. He reappeared in the entrance, just behind the gunner navi, firesword shifted to his main arm. Drawing it back, he slashed at the gunner one...two...three...four times, uncaring if the heelnavis or surviving sword users got in the way. They would just be caught in each slash.

After the fourth swing, the assassin stepped back, ready to dodge in case the gunner had any close range attacks.
___

1. AirStorm2 - Group 2 (80 each, draw towards Pianissimo)
2. AreaGrab behind GunnerNavi
3-6. FireSword(?) GunnerNavi and either HeelNavi that gets in the way (80? each)
*Swordplay: Dodge
Pianissimo triggered the AirStorm chip, pulling his enemies towards him while sending whirlwinds ripping along towards them. As the first whirlwind appeared, the laser sight from the GunnerNavi's rifle lined up on the assassin, the weapon beeped quietly, and the rifle fired. The shot passed through the trio of tornadoes and struck Pianissimo before the sound of the shot made it to the assassin's ears.

As Pianissimo teleported (narrowly avoiding a second shot), the tornadoes struck the defending HeelNavi's shields, weakening one and breaking the other. He reappeared behind the Gunner, and began swinging the strange FireSword. Having caught the target by surprise, the initial attack connected and dealt a punishing amount of damage to the GunnerNavi. The weapon left a quartet of delayed phantom images of itself and Pianissimo's arms, all red-hued and semi-transparent, which proceeded to slash in exactly the same arcs as the assassin's own strokes one after the other. They also seemed to connect as if real, one after another. The GunnerNavi was left with no time to react to the unrelenting chain of attacks from the burning blade.

Then the fire extinguished itself as the FireSword reached its limit after the third swing. However, instead of vanishing as most chips do, the sword remained fully intact within Pianissimo's grasp. The fire was quickly replaced with a soft, muted glow around the edge of the sword before the final stroke. It connected with spectacular results, sending the Gunner and both HeelNavis flying halfway across the room before crashing into the floor and coming to a skidding halt. The Gunner, showing amazing resilience, rolled with the landing, and stood up quickly while firing a spray of vulcan rounds in retaliation (3 of which connected).

The two surviving SwordNavis charged towards Pianissimo. One of them had it's torso twisted to the side, sword before it, knife behind. The other, only equipped with a knife, ran before it with the knife held in a loose guard.

That wasn't a firesword...that wasn't a firesword at all... Pianissimo thought, glancing at the large weapon he still held in his hands. As the fourth swing had connected, it had thrown all three navis across the room in a fashion similar to an airshot. Or possibly...an airsword? "What the hell was that?" he asked nobody in particular before noticing the two remaining swordnavis, apparently feeling ignored, advancing on him.

"You still here?" he asked in their direction, almost dismissively, bringing his own katana around to wield both blades simultaneously.

In a fluid motion, he advanced on the two sword-wielders, drawing his katana in a horizontal slice to catch them both in its swing, then bringing the other blade, whatever it was, over his head in a vertical slice aimed at the one he figured could still take more of a beating.

As he finished, he turned his eyes on the gunner once again, moving to the side in an attempt to dodge any possible incoming shots.

Meanwhile, in the safety of the real world, Duke observed the 'actions' of the sword the cleric had dropped. Upon noticing that the longsword he had scanned earlier had vanished from its pedestal, he selected the ancient sword in his navi's hand on his computer and attempted to scan it.
___

*Tac Movement: Advance on SwordNavis
1. WideBlade SwordNavis - 110 Each
2. AncientSword SwordNaviEXB - ??
3. Dodge
Pianissimo's first lateral slash was parried by the knife wielding SwordNavi, and deflected up and away. His follow-up over-head slash was similarly intercepted by the target's FireKnife... However, the knife shattered as if it were made of cheap glass, and the sword cleaved into the opponent. About halfway through the swing, the blade ignited, and a creacent wave of flame leaped forth to incinerate both the lead Navi and his partner. Both enemies vanished as the flames past.

Pianissimo then looked towards the GunnerNavi, and jumped sideways. He managed to barely avoid the first shot from the enemy's rifle, but the second iron spike, fired beside the first, hit him dead-on. The HeelNavi to the right threw his bomb, while the other raised his vulcan to fire.

--------

The scan data Duke got from the Ancient Sword was a baffling mess, and certainly far more complex than a simple object. The signals it was giving off were changing constantly, as if it were reconfiguring itself on-the-fly. When Pianissimo actually took a swing with it, the signals suddenly stabilized, but spiked wildly in intensity, causing the scanning software to overload, crash, and reboot. The PET wasn't quite up to the task of processing the sudden massive flood of data while running Pianissimo.EXE, it seemed.

"What the...hell?" Duke asked, reading the data from the sword. He couldn't make much of any sense out of it. The signals were changing constantly, something no simple object should be able to do. Or anything for that matter, as long as it was simply sitting there.

Then Pianissimo took a swing.

The data patterns stabilized, but the intensity shot through the roof, flying completely off the charts.

Error: Data Overload.

"What? No. No! Bad computer, don't overload on me!"

Error: Unknown Error.

"Yes, yes, I saw that," Duke said, pressing several keys to try and fix the problem. "Damn it, this had better wo-"

"This program has performed an illegal operation and-"

"Bah, think you're so great? Take this, REBOOT!" Duke snapped, shutting down the scanning software and forcing a restart. He sighed. "Well, not doing that again."

Pianissimo shook his head, whipping his katana around in a wide arc. Blackness spread from the tip, encompassing the room in a shroud of surreal darkness. As long as Duke was fighting with the scanning software, he'd be on his own. He lunged, now invisible, at the gunner, thrusting the sword at it in a stabbing motion.
___

4. Call of Darkness (Surreal darkness illusion, invisibility, 1-hit barrier)
5. Tactical Movement: Advance toward the gunner
6. Stab Ancient Sword at gunner
As the room was enveloped in darkness and Pianissimo vanished, the vulcan wielding HeelNavi began firing wildly, obviously panicked. The Gunner Navi, on the other hand, leveled his rifle once more. The laser sight on the rifle tracked its thin red beam across the distance between, and eventually picked out the invisible assassin in spite of everything. The rifle emitted a hissing whisper as it fired the MarkCannon round into Pianissimo's defensive barrier at roughly the point where the sight shone upon him, destroying it.

As Pianissimo began to move forward, something behind him exploded, and the healing powers of the candle vanished. A couple of vulcan rounds whizzed passed, missing him by a foot or two. Unfortunately, the Gunner appeared to have more sniper rounds at his disposal as the laser sight's beam lit up in the blackness, and painted the assassin again. Before Pianissimo could reach his target, the rifle fired a second MarkCannon round with the same impressive accuracy as the first. However, the high-velocity bullet was intercepted by the appearance of a honeycomb of blue hexagonal panels mere inches from his face. The field appeared, deflected the bullet, and vanished in the blink of an eye, leaving the assassin with his head intact.

As Pianissimo entered melee range, he stabbed at the rifle armed GunnerNavi. The target responded by stepping back and out of range of the attack.... The Sword then responded by pneumatically launching a trio of stilettos into the GunnerNavi anyway, who shouted an incredulous "WHAT?!" as the assassin before him somehow managed to attack him with nothing but a sword.

"Seems like this sword doesn't like you too much," Pianissimo commented as the darkness began to dispel, leaving the assassin standing directly in front of the gunner. Before he could request chips, he felt data from some being sent already, and convenient choices they were.

He smirked, thrusting his free hand forward. As if driven by sheer momentum, a short burst of bubbles erupted as he opened his hand, shooting at the gunner. Following, a ball of electricity formed from the hand and followed the same path, traveling towards the opponent at an annoyingly slow rate for only having to move a few feet. Deciding to follow up before moving in again, he thrust the same hand skyward. A surge of electricity spread from a point in the ceiling above him, reaching outward in tendrils before falling to the ground in massive bolts on the surviving enemy navis.

"Game over," he said, drawing his own katana again. The blade became enveloped in a watery veil as the last of the wideblade data shattered, overwriting the long-since expended chip with the aquasword. The assassin stepped forward, delivering a horizontal slash from the aquasword, then a vertical from the strange broadsword that had already helped him immensely.

After both slashes, he darted to the side, staying just barely within attacking range before tracing one final lethal cut through the air with the ancient sword.

As the bubbler struck the GunnerNavi, he hissed in pain and glared at Pianissimo. Steam began to rise off of the red Navi's body as he raised his rifle, aimed straight for the assassin's head, and fired again as the assassin threw a thunderball. The cannon shot stopped just short of Pianissimo's face, and caromed off of another field of blue panels. The Gunner fired again immediately, but Pianissimo's stance had shifted, placing the assassin's arm between his face and the shot before it connected. Pianissimo was knocked backwards with the impact just as another volley of vulcan rounds passed through the space he'd previously occupied.

The thunderball Pianissimo had thrown earlier struck the GunnerNavi first, having snuck across the floor while the Navi was preoccupied with eliminating the assassin. The ElecReel's thunderbolt zapped the Gunner in almost the same instant as the Thunder1, causing electricity to arc over the Navi's form for a moment.

By the time the Gunner recovered, Pianissimo was already moving into range for his next attack. The assassin's AquaSword struck the target, caved into the armor with ease, and left a deep gouge the Navi's torso armor. The follow-up attack with the Ancient Sword connected, and sheared through the GunnerNavi's rifle as it attempted to shoot him again. The rifle exploded in the Navi's hands as Pianissimo side stepped and struck the Gunner one final time, finishing it off.

Pianissimo's sidestep allowed him to avoid another burst of Vulcan fire from one of the HeelNavis. However, the other managed to catch him in the blast radius of a thrown bomb. The assassin's armor took the brunt of it, but....

Pianissimo certainly felt that last one.

Pain.
Armor beginning to deteriorate.
Error messages flashing behind the eyes of his helmet.

HP CRITICAL.
DELETION IMMINENT.
RECOMMEND JACK OUT IMMEDIATELY.

"Shut up..." the assassin rasped through the pain, his voice distorted by the damaged systems. He smacked the side of his helmet, only causing a light static to fill his vision momentarily. He turned around, hurling the aquasword data at the bomber navi with an overhead swing, as though throwing a tomahawk. They were too far for melee attacks and he wouldn't be able to approach them without taking another hit, so the weapon was useless. Still, he hung onto the ancient sword. It had shielded him and proved useful as more than a sharp pointy object to swing around before, so he wouldn't just throw it away...whatever it actually was.

Outside the net, Duke repeatedly tried to get his navi answer, only to receive no response. "Damn...communication must have been damaged," he said, instead opting to jam chips into the PET and hoping not to break anything in the process.

He didn't. The assassin received the chips, and immediately threw a trio of needles forward, one at the bomber and two at the vulcan-wielder. He then rolled forward, expecting another retaliation, then rolled again at an angle in case it tried to lead off a shot on where he would move to, taking care to not drop the sword or slam it against the ground in the process. It still had an HP reading, so he wasn't sure what hitting it against something would do. He stopped in a kneeling position, slamming his fist into the ground and raising a column of purple energy around the last target, hopefully finishing off.

Pianissimo's sword throw misses it's mark as the curve of the long katana-like blade causes it's flight path to wobble to one side. However, it does cause the HeelNavi he threw it at to jump sideways out of reflex. Before the HeelNavi can recover, it is pegged by an aqua needle, and deleted.

Pianissimo then threw another pair of needles at the remaining HeelNavi, managing to strike it with both. The target then returned fire; its burst of vulcan rounds narrowly missing the dodging assassin. The Heel Navi adjusted its aim and fired again, only to miss as Pianissimo's strategy paid off.

The HeelNavi was in the process of reloading its gun when Pianissimno's PowerBolt attack blasted it with a column of energy from below. When the column dissipated, the HeelNavi was gone.

With the enemies defeated, the flames surrounding the Ancient Sword died down and extinguished themselves. The white glow of sword's double edges then died, and the weapon went dormant.

System failure imminent. Recommend immediate jack-

"Shut up," Pianissimo rasped again, struggling to his feet. For a moment, he only succeeded in straining himself even more, before feeling healing energy wash over him.

((Energypack used.))

"Much better," he said, not from relief from the pain so much as from the disappearance of the error messages and jack-out warnings. He got to his feet, hefting the ancient sword over his shoulder. For a moment, he considered swapping it out for the cursed edge. It fit his fighting style better, for one.

"R..,eekjsally thpoughh," Duke's voice crackled, interrupted by static as the communications repaired itself. "Next time, just drop him back into the lava or something, I'm not made of subchips."

"He was the same gunner as a couple rooms back," the assassin commented. "Repeating tactics would have been a stupid idea. Besides, the lava is just under the floor now, and probably not all that deep." He then rolled his eyes at the subchip comment. "Fix that."

"Whatever. By all rights I should have jacked you out. The gunner deleted our charge, we failed as it is. Anyway, you going to keep that thing?"

"Probably," he said, still looking at the cursed edge."

"Just take both of them," the netop said, following his navi's eyes. "You've got two hands, don't you?"

"And taking both would make three swords, plus any other chips I may want to use. I don't see it," Pianissimo responded. "What did you say the katana was again?"

"Cursed Edge. Other than that I don't have a damn clue. The software kept bothering me to upgrade it."

"It's settled then. And while you're sitting around there, try writing a sheath program for this thing." The assassin turned away, walking toward the exit.

"That sword crashed my software, though."

"Cursed blades are called cursed for a reason, Duke."

"And who ever heard of an assassin that used a broadsword?"

"Me. Just now." The assassin shrugged, moving onward.
Pianissimo walked through the exit in the back of the room, and through a long, narrow, winding passage. Sometime later, he reaches a partially blocked entryway to another room... that wasn't a room. He was, in fact, standing at the mouth of a tunnel that emptied onto a shelf carved into the side of the stone shaft the center of the volcano.

From his current position behind the boulder that blocked half of the entryway, Pianissimo could see several more boulders dotting the broad crescent shaped floor just beyond the door. The stone ceiling paralleled the floor a few meters above the tops of the rocks, and extended all the way to the point where the floor gave way to the volcanic abyss a dozen or so panel lengths beyond the entrance. Looking out from there he could see the stone walls of the inner cone of the volcano as lit by a reddish-orange glow rose from the magma chamber far below, and estimated the shaft to be scores of panels lengths in diameter. The edge of a metallic platform suspended in the vertical shaft above the magma chamber could be seen through the space between two obstructing boulders.

Pianissimo could hear the echoes of someone speaking somewhere on the other side of the boulder, though it didn't seem very close by....

"...But I'm telling you, this is all we could get before those lunatics wrecked the place." A panicked female voice explained.

A young male voice added: "We grabbed what we had from our workstations and bolted here."

An older male voice yelled "Enough already!", which silenced the others. "This'll irritate our business partners, more'n likely. Nothin' we can do about any of that now, anyhow. Just put 'em in the capsule, and let me do the talking."

The sounds of something metallic being dumped into a container with more haste than care could be heard.

"Now, we jes wait for 'em to show up, an--"

The high-pitched sound of something beaming in... make that two somethings as the sound was interrupted and overlapped by an identical noise was heard. The sounds of metallic footfalls on metal paneling rang out as the newcomers stepped away from their transfer point (whatever that was).

A heavily modulated voice echoed strongly through the cavern... "You're early."

"Early, yes, good business strategy there," Duke rambled over a private line. "Always be early to meetings. Bet he did really well in business school, that one."

Pianissimo shook his head, turning the communications off as he edged around the rock blocking part of the entrance. He kept moving until he could see the metal platform more clearly, though hoped to remain undetected by whoever was on it.
Looking around the rock, Pianissimo was able to see the metal platform suspended in the middle of the volcanic shaft. A metal catwalk, all of 2 panels in width, stretched out from the edge of the cavernous shelf and connected with it. Standing out there on the platform were the five red and black Normal Navis that had fled the previous battle, what appeared to be a fairly strong red and black Heel Navi, and... a pair of armored figures that could only be two Executioners.

"This is a surprise..." One of the armored figures began, almost lightly. "...To what do we owe the honor?"

"Hmph." The second Executioner nodded, then added.... "I only like surprises at parties. So, you will tell us..." The armored figure's voice dropped menacingly. "Now... Before we find out on our own."

The HeelNavi took a moment, then responded with surprising honesty: "Our facility was invaded just now. Our Guild was almost completely wiped out."

"By whom?" the first Executioner asked bluntly.

"Two custom Navis. One is a female we've had trouble with in the past. She was finally eliminated, but she got our Sword Master before then." The HeelNavi paused, as if collecting himself before continuing. "The other is a sword wielding male assassin that she brought with her. We've never seen him before. He cut down as many of our SwordsNavis as the demoness did, and we haven't heard from our Gunner and the two guards we sent to support him for several minutes."

The two Executioners turned their armored heads to look at each other, and then back at the HeelNavi. "In other words, these two Navis fragged your code."

"To my knowledge, myself and these five surviving technicians are all that remains of our Guild." The older HeelNavi held out a sealed data capsule to the closer of the two armored figures... "This capsule contains about 80% of your latest Emblem order."

"Do you really expect us to pay you for failing to fulfill your contract?"

"Absolutely not." The old Navi responded quickly. "With our leader dead, the contract is void anyway. I propose a deal instead."

The armored figure furthest from the HeelNavi crossed it's arms then said: "Go on..."

"We'll trade what we have in this capsule, not for large sums of Zenny, but for safe passage." The HeelNavi offered flatly. "You let us through the gate, and the Emblems are yours. The price doesn't get cheaper."

"You have a deal, old man." The Executioner furthest from the old HeelNavi said as it uncrossed its arms and nodded to its partner.

The closer of the two accepted the capsule with one hand, and handed the Heel Navi a piece of key data in return with the other hand. The armored figure then motioned towards the telepad with it's helmeted head. "Get moving."

The HeelNavi nodded, and the small group of red and black Navis turned and began shuffling towards the telepad.

The other Executioner held an armored hand up to the side of its helmeted head, and spoke to no-one in particular... "This is Red Two. We're ready for pickup."

Pianissimo pressed himself against the rock, listening to the conversation and trying to hang onto every word.

"Make a note, Duke," he said once the exchange took place, making sure his voice couldn't carry more than a couple feet in the net as he turned the comm on again. "Armored figures are probably...what did they call themselves again, Executioners?" He paused, hearing typing from the other end. At the same, he tapped the side of his helmet, and the information he was dictated began tracing itself on the inside of the eyepieces and then vanishing...a saved record. "Emblems. Navi emblems, most likely. There was some sort of contract...emblems for money. Why Executioners want navi emblems...yet to be determined. Best not to provoke them for now."

The data finished writing itself, and seconds later he heard the typing over the line stop. The assassin sighed, making a run for one of the other rocks. He was grateful, in that moment, that the metal catwalk was a ways off still, and that his boots were designed to make absolutely as little noise as possible. With any luck, what little noise there was would coincide with the shuffling and the "pickup". There was little he could do about the emblems or Executioners, so he would have to, instead, gather as much information as he could and, if possible, follow.

Possible being a matter of practicality vs suicide. If following meant provoking the Executioners, he would have little choice but to let them go, taking with him only the overheard conversation. Still, he couldn't help but wonder what the emblems were for. He remembered back to Broadside, whose working with them in the first place had something to do with his emblem's removal, and Arcaster, who had no emblem and whose appearance looked almost...dead.

1-6 + passive: Move to position behind Rock E
As Pianissimo quietly advanced behind the cover of the scattered boulders, the surviving guild members stepped onto the telepad and warped out one after the other. The Executioners stood by silently as the guilders left. They obviously intended to keep their word and allowed the survivors to depart.

However, after the last one had exited through the warp, the Executioner that had identified itself as "Red 2" stepped over to a spot near the telepad, and held out an empty hand. A small disc-like device materialized in the Executioner's grasp, which the armored figure laid carefully on the panel adjacent to the telepad. The armored Navi stood up again, and began walking away from the object.

Nodding to its partner, the Executioner holding the capsule commented: "Quick thinking."

"It was necessary." 'Red 2' added as it shrugged. "I really hate improv."

"I certainly can't complain about the results though." The Executioner held up the capsule admiringly for a moment. "Twenty-something Navi Emblems for processing, and it cost us nothing." It slung the capsule over its shoulder and drew its weapon. "How long do you figure it'll take the NP to scoop them up?"

"Given the tips our man left for 'em... I give those poor bastards seven minutes at the outside." 'Red 2' shrugged, readying its rifle as well. "I'll bet money they talk immediately. Takers?"

"Nuh-uh." The Eecutioner waved a hand before itself. The armored figure allowed its hand to fall to its side again before continuing. "Not that it really matters... Their testimony will seem like a raving lunatic's flight of fancy, and spun by petty criminals trying to lessen their sentences no less." 'Red 1' shrugged. "All that's left for us to do is cover our tracks and ensure the NPs find nothing to support their charges' claims."

"Covered, love." 'Red 2' said as it pressed a button on its forearm, causing the device it had set to activate. The strange device emitted a buzzing sound as it covered a line of metal panels across the platform with electrical currents that bled into the framework that supported them. The framework vanished into deletion, which caused the platform to break into its component panels and drop into the lava below, taking the telepad with it. "God help the sods that try that gate now."

"Think we aught to track down that swordsman they were talking about?" The Executioner carrying the capsule asked.

"No, we've a job to do." The other responded, movig to stand next to his partner. "We wait for evac and deliver that capsule to the boss man."

"Speak of the devil..." The capsule carrying Executioner remarked as the sound of jet engines echoed its way down into the volcano, and began gaining in volume....

Both Executioners looked up expectantly.
