Mission: Area Exploration

Past the bend in the path, the navis continued until yet another fork faded into view ahead of them. other than that, part of a platform to their right came into view: rounded, in appearance, suggest that the entire thing was circular.

Meanwhile, after several repeats of Aera's message, another voice answered the radio in response.

"We're h--------ou...barely. I ha---no idea where we a----ough. Looks li----ome sort of...ringed path. Aegir's he----oo."
After this, both navis could here Aegir's voice from the other end as well, saying "...ut up for a m--------o you hear that?"

"Say again?" Rainfall responded, "I can't hear anything except you two...." As she said this, however, neither her nor Machman had any need to hear what Aegir was talking about. Both could see a faint blue light out of the corner of their eyes, but had no time to determine where it came from before the entire area began shaking violently, much as the spiral staircase had done before. Rather than giving way, however, the network of pathways gave a sharp lurch upward, knocking Machman, Aera, and Rainfall to the ground before falling silent again.

As the tremors stopped, both navis could hear a faint cry of "Damn it!" somewhere to the east. Though they couldn't make out if it was one of the other two navis, there was a fair chance that it was: the signal had been lost.

They also could hear the chatter of viruses around them.

Mach and Aera were forced to the ground, but they quickly stood up and looked to the East.

They must be over there!

I agree, but first we have some business to take care of.

Mach raised his protective plasma shield, and Aera quickly raised hers as well before the viruses got within combat range. They were closing in quickly, so there was little time to waste.

Aera, try to distract those UFOs; don't let them get closer! Rainfall, engage the viruses to the North!

[Ba----chips uploaded! -------]

Aera had already charged her capacitors to full capacity, and kept them on the verge of overload as she took aim towards the closest floating saucer-shaped virus. Once she was sure of her aim, she purged all of the built up electrical power in her body in a flash of light and electrical discharges. This reaction sent out an invisible pulse of electro-magnetic energy towards the virus.

Aera looked back to Machman, who had his right arm drawn back; his right hand was in the process of transforming into a claw, and ready to grip the cube of stone that rose up from the ground. He then tried to sink his claws into the RockCube, and prepared to send it hurtling towards the viruses to the South. Aera nodded towards Machman and then faced the viruses to the North, with an interest in the closest Cloudier virus. As her arms started to ripple with electrical discharges, Mach took a step to the side before he dragged the rockcube across the floor and released it like a massive bowling....cube. Machman deliberately had his arm rise at the end of the throw, in an attempt to have the cube actually tumble towards the viruses, instead of a slower slide.

As the cube rumbled towards the viruses to the South, Aera set her sights on the Cloudier virus and pointed her arms towards it. Her hands were closed, but they quickly opened as a visible wave of electricity coursed down her arms from her shoulders and down to her palms. With nowhere else to go, the current leaped from her hands and traveled down a pair of magnetic "beams" that she had already projected from her arms as she aimed. The bright bolts surged down their paths literally in a flash.

Machman's clawed hand changed directly into a dark, elongated buster with a thin barrel that widened a little at the end, and a large fuel tank materialized underneath the base of the buster, and a pair of tubes snaked from the fuel tank; one directly to the barrel above, and the other to the end of the barrel, which fueled a small pilot light. Machman brought his flamethrower to bear and aimed it towards the southern viruses, centered on the quadrupedal BeeTank. Fuel was pumped down the long barrel and passed over the pilot light, which caused the stream of fuel to become a fountain of flames. He didn't have much fuel, but he managed to sufficiently coat the area ahead with immolated fuel. The light from the flames was intense, but the darkness just seemed to swallow the light up.

He still wasn't certain his barrage of fire and stone did not finish off the viruses, so he drew his normalized arm back, which then clutched a newly formed green boomerang. He aimed to send the curved blade straight down the path, slice up any viruses in the way, then return back to him. He then threw the boomerang and it zipped off like a blurry green disk. The boomerang flew down the path before it eventually passed by the viruses and climbed before it made a banking turn to make its return trip down the same path. As the boomerang made it's return, a small orb materialized in Mach's left hand. Mach quickly snatched the boomerang out of the air as it passed by, and it fragmented before it beamed back to the PET.

Mach tossed the orb in the air in front of him, the small golden dynamo-shaped protrusions flickered in the light of the flames. As Mach turned completely around to face the northern viruses, he caught the orb with his right hand. He made sure none of this allies were amongst the viruses ahead, and he threw the orb in a somewhat low arc. The orb hit the floor and exploded with wire-laced fluid, all connected to the orb's core generator. It quickly activated with a powerful electric shock, capable of damaging motor function and causing paralysis.

"Hurricanes, no problem," Rainfall said to herself as she got back to her feet. "But one little earthquake and you're on the ground. Good job, Rainfall. Amya, I hope you've fixed the rain problem, I'm going to need it here."

There was some static from the other end, of which even she could only make out the words "not yet." Sighing, she turned to face the north group of viruses which Machman wanted her to take on. "Just send me chips and keep working on it, then."

On the other side, Aera opened the fight with an electromagnetic blast to the nearest UFO virus, which sent it into an irregular flight pattern. Machman followed up by summoning a Rockcube and throwing it toward the UFO. The confused virus veered out of the way and almost flew off the path, causing the rockcube to miss, fall into a tumble along the ground, and hit its counterpart, deleting it and destroying the cube.

"He-----y this," came the voice of Rainfall's operator, barely audible to Aera as she faced and attacked the nearest of the cloud viruses, deleting it in two shots. Almost as soon as Aera's attack and the wisps left from the cloud vanished, more lightning erupted all over the field, spreading from under Rainfall's feet to points under the viruses that rested above the ground of the path, then ripped through the air. The second Cloudy and the Swordy took hits, though the remaining UFO was unaffected by this as well. The swordy, badly weakened by the lightning, attempted to retaliate, only for Rainfall to sidestep the swing and counter with a swing from her own umbrella, which strangely enough cut through the virus.

Machman followed up his rock throw with a flamethrower, then a boomerang, both of which damaged all their intended targets (or the ones that were still alive, at least), including the awkwardly flying UFO. The beetank fired off two bombs in response, but both missed, falling off the path and dissolving into the void. The Bombwork summoned and began pushing a bomb, and the N.O. fired off a beam of its own, which destroyed Machman's shield.

On the north side, the Brushman painted a Holy panel under itself, and the Melody squished its body slightly in preparation to jump...right before Machman lobbed a magbomb at both viruses, stunning them. Rainfall followed up after Mach's attack and thrust her umbrella forward at the Melody. The umbrella spun and grew into a drill as it made contact, boring a large hole through the music note before ripping it apart into nothing.

Alright, just a handful left.

Machman's shields raised again and he shifted focus towards the stunned Brushman virus. He noticed the Holy panel underneath the oddly shaped virus, and devised a quick plan. He turned back to Aera, and gave her his instructions.

I'm going to draw that virus off it's protective panel, and once I do, hit it with everything you have!

Aera had already started to charge up, and her arms crackled with electricity.
Ready when you are!

Mach extended his right hand towards the stunned Brushman, palm open. A bolt of electricity coursed from his hand and towards the virus, hopefully to have "tethered" the virus to his hand. Machman then closed his hand into a fist and pulled back quickly in an attempt to drag the virus off it's protective terrain. On cue, Aera extended her own two hands towards the Brushman virus, but she had her hands touching, side by side. Electricity poured from her shoulders and down her arms before it congregated in a bright, swirling mass before it was unleashed in a flurry of lightning bolts, 3 in all.

As Aera displayed her impressive display of electrical firepower, the thrusters on his wings began to glow cyan and they primed up with a high-pitched whine. Machman clenched his fists as the thrusters ignited in a multitude of cyan flashes. And then, he was gone, only to have materialized several dozen feet away, and perched above the southern group of viruses. His right arm was already drawn back, his fist was more of a pale blue than it's original navy color, and mist oozed from the surface of his fist. He aimed down and towards the center of the viral group before he thrust his arm down and opened his hand. The thin layer of ice that had already formed over his fist shattered into a million shimmering pieces as he opened his hand, and a white torrent of super-cooled air and frost cascaded from his palm and over the viruses' positions. The howling roar of the miniature blizzard lasted only a second or so, and the frost quickly dissapated to reveal the floor beneath had been coated with ice.

He closed his right hand, then slightly numb from the cold, and prepared to deliver his 2nd dose of pain from his left. His left fist was drawn back by the act of using his first attack, so his right arm and hand, covered in electrical discharges, was ready to go. He thrusted his arm down and opened his left hand, and unleashed a flurry of lightning bolts that darted from his arm in rapid succession and blasted scorch marks in a rather wide area on the ground.

Machman then throttled up, and boosted away from the viruses to return to his comrades. He weaved and rolled as he did so, to keep himself from being an easy target for any surviving viruses.

Great work back there, Aera! You're really getting stronger.

Aera smiled and gave him a wink.
Just give me a little bit of time, and I'll be even stronger than you!

Machman beamed the zenny and battlechip data to the PET.
Heheh, we'll see.

He then turned back to Rainfall and started to gesture ahead.

Rainfall nodded, following Machman as they proceeded. She attempted radioing Arachne and Aegir twice more as they walked, but both times were only met with indiscernible static. "Tremors must have messed with the signal," she noted.

Up ahead, the path curved to the right once again, causing it to look more and more like the ring path Arachne had mentioned. Branching off into the middle, just close enough that the navis could make out the edges, was another path that looked like it connected to the circular platform they had seen the edge of before the latest tremor. Meanwhile, another path faded into view above them, part of an upper level.

As Mach and Aera continued forward, they drew level with the path leading into the center. From their new vantage point, it was clear that the path did in fact connect to a circular platform, but what was on it, if anything, was still unclear.

The path they were on, meanwhile, continued to extend into the darkness ahead of him.

In the distance ahead of them, flames from a battle flickered through the darkness, followed by the sound of rushing water, before both were swallowed up again.

Mach and Aera saw the flames of battle, and though continuing forward, they proceeded with caution. Aera continued to attempt to contact Aegir and Arachne, though the signal was very unstable before.

ACTIONS:

Almost predictably by this point, the path curved to the right again ahead of them.

The signal was still choppy and almost indiscernible, but Aera was able to make out the words "dead end" and "broken path" from Arachne's response, as well as, for some strange reason, "Netfrica" in Aegir's.

Rainfall took a few seconds longer to catch up with Mach and Aera, and was holding a dull gray piece of what could have been an old Security Cube in her hand. Being just a corner, however, they couldn't be sure. "Hey, Mach, any idea what this is?" Rainfall asked.

Mach and Aera stopped as Rainfall approached.

Hmm?

He looked at the corner of the broken cube, and looked back up at Rainfall.

I dunno. Where did you find it?

Aera approached the pair and relayed what she heard on the radio.

I wasn't able to get much, but Arachne was saying something about a dead end, and a broken path; while Aegir said something about Netfrica... I think we should try to find some sort of dead-ends or something.

I agree, lets continue forward and continue to try to contact Aegir and Arachne.

"Oh, it was hanging off the edge of the path back there," Rainfall pointed back to where the path had last split. She held it up and turned it around so that Mach and Aera could clearly see that the broken side was pitch black, with the texture of melted nylon. "Looks like the rest of it melted away or something."

She blinked at Aera's report and called the other two navis over the radio herself. "Sorry, what was this about Netfrica?" she asked, speaking slowly in hopes that they would hear more of the message.

"We...found...a...signpost...pointing...down...a...broken...path......... -post...said...'to Netfrica'," was Aegir's response, following the same slow speech as Rainfall's.

"I think I've found their signal," Rainfall said, pointing her umbrella down a side path ahead of them.

Mach pondered about the odd piece of debris Rainfall had, then they heard Aegir's communication. Aera also overheard Rainfalls explanation of the object, and heard the radio conversation. Mach stopped mid stride as Aera's eyes grew wide with the shock of realization. She turned to Machman, and her voice trembled slightly.

No... this place, it's a...
A network zone. It seems the void contains more than what we thought... Rainfall, get Aegir and Arachne over the radio. Tell them to move west and we'll meet them there.

Mach continued forward to make the turn down the path, and Aera followed behind him. Though he may have appeared to be acting coldly to the idea that this desolate area was once a bustling network, but his mind was wracked with questions. "How did this happen?" "What did this?" "Will this happen again? If so, where?" "Is there a source, an origin?"

As Mach and Aera turned down the path, Rainfall relayed their message and followed.

"Hey, I th.......an see you guys fro...ere," Aegir responded. "We'll..e ri.......hold on..."

The path split again just as the ringed path they had been on faded into the darkness, each branch of the fork curving east just at the edge of their vision. Which one to take, however, was the least of their concerns as the darkness surrounding them shifted to the appearance of old TV static, complete with a soft hiss. Out of the static floated an incomplete navi. Whatever it was before, none of the navis could tell, as only a gray nondescript torso was visible, extending into a head only as far as the eyes, after which the body disappeared into the very same static. The arms and legs of the navi followed the same pattern, forming only vague approximations of actual limbs within the haze.

Rainfall, who hadn't noticed the navi yet and remained focused on the darkness-turned static, continued trying to contact the other two navis. "Are you two seeing this?" she asked. "It's like an old television screen here."

She only managed to pick up the words "don't see anything" from Arachne before two more navis floated into existence from the opposite side of the first, well within her field of view. She took a step back, turning around to alert Mach and Aera only to see the first one. "Oh..." she said.

As all three 'navis' came into view, the static background faded back into the darkness of before, leaving only Machman, Aera, and Rainfall surrounded by the three.

"Thibztsme --mory is noKSSHT YOurs to s-e-e-e-EEE," spoke the first navi in a distorted voice, raising one arm. The faintest of yellow glows appeared along the trip of the otherwise grayscale form of the navi, and eight muted orbs faded out of the static of its arms, encircling the navi and orbiting slowly.
"Be-EEEEgo-one, imPUzzrities."

Mach and Aera looked on as the "navi" appeared before them. Mach's curiosity was quickly replaced with "battle mode" as he saw the other two appear on either side of him.

Three hostiles identified! Engaging!
[Roger that! Chips uploading now!]

Mach and Aera's protective shields raised as a saucer-shaped wire frame appeared next to Mach. He glanced downwards to see the object get filled in with data, and take the form of a UFO virus.

[The Catcher chip... Well, let's see what it does.]

The UFO's gaze stopped on the first Navi and it quickly zoomed towards its target to steal any offensive data and return it to Mach. In the meantime, Aera charged her body up with electricity, and turned to face the navi to her immediate right. Her capacitors quickly overloaded, and she unleashed a flash of sparks as she sent an invisible pulse of magnetism towards the enemy.

Rainfall, focus on the other Navi! We'll try to take care of the other two!

The UFO zipped back towards Machman and hovered behind him, awaiting orders as Machman prepared a newly formed BubbleStar launcher over his right hand. He aimed his hole-covered buster towards the lead Remnant Navi and fired the launcher. The cluster bubble projectile sailed towards the Navi and exploded in a spray of sticky, and highly conductive fluid. Machman quickly deactivated his bubblestar launcher and followed up by sending a magnetic pulse towards the Navi with his open left hand. He closed his hand tightly and drew his arm back in an attempt to draw the Navi closer.

As soon as he brought his arm all the way back, he glanced down to his right arm, where his 30mm vulcan cannon had just finished materializing and already had started to spin up with a high-pitched whine. Machman aimed directly towards the Navi's chest and opened up with his vulcan as he started to strafe backwards. The vulcan's roar shattered the relative silence of the network, and the bright, continuous muzzle flash illuminated more than just Mach's body and intense look on his face. Mach continued backwards as he attempted to pass the other Navis who were surrounding him, all while pouring the last of his ammunition on the leader. Aera saw Mach fall back, and retreated in a similar fashion while she took aim at the lead Navi and fired a bright bolt of electricity towards it.

Mach's vulcan ran out of ammunition and disappeared from under his arm as he paused in the air in front of Aera. His wings left his back and crossed in front of him, which acted as a base for the large yellow guard shield that formed over top and provided a defensive barrier between the strange remnants and the pair of Navis.
