Hospital:The Beginning

Suien nodded his head, thankful that he wouldn't have to make a trip back to the hospital before heading off to the NetColosseum for his little adventure. Returning Erin's smile with a slight bow and a friendly smirk of his own, he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out of the room. Turning in the doorway, he waved to Erin. "I'll come check in on you from time to time. I just got out of college, so I haven't had time to set up a personal email account that isn't connected to the school's..." he paused and shook his head, "...bastards never told me that they cut you off when you graduate... but when I do, you'll be the first to know."

With that, the tall, dark-haired netOp nodded his head and exited the hospital, chasing the bus to Science Labs down the street.
Hal arrived at the hospital outside the grounds: while the hospital had a helipad, he obviously wasn't authorized to use it and thus decided he'd be taking the usual rustic way of parking. Landing the helicopter, he wrung his hands anxiously as he the propeller blade came to a stop. He knew that it was simply the sort of help-the-less-fortunate task he always made his policy to undertake, but he couldn't help but feel unprofessional as he stepped through the gate and up the walkway, straightening his tie all the while, as he planned to go upstairs and trade battlechips as he'd done so many years ago.

He approached the front counter and ran a hand through the slick top of his hair, glad he'd come with his professional look. He flashed his usual grin at the front desk attendant. "Excuse me, Mam'," he began, keeping his hands to his sides now, "Can you direct me to the room of a miss 'Rein?' I have a delivery job for her"

"You mean 'Erin'?" the lady asked Hal as if he was an idiot.

"Erm, yes, um, if you have such a person that... er, you suspect may be needing my services," he responded, keeping his teeth clenched in his grin and shutting his eyes, keeping his fist at his side.

"Yeah, yeah," she answered dismissively, giving Hal the guest book to fill out and requiring him to carry a tag. She quickly sent him on his way.

"For crying out loud," Hal muttered under his breath as he entered the elevator, "Can she tell who I am? I'm a TV personality, for-" he began. He shut himself up as he realized he had company on the trip. First impressions, like always, took priority.

"First impressions,", he told himself, strafing confidently toward the room where he'd find the ailing and undoubtably sweet little girl curled up in her bed, presumably with a teddy bear or some such thing. "That's the ticket!" he reassured himself, pushing open the door and looking inside to find a girl possibly as few as three or four years younger than himself. He had formed a rather hasty initial opinion before entering that he would be catering to a very young child, but he had forgotten that he himself was barely entering the world of mature people. He ran his hand through his hair, straightening his tie as he entered. "Hello there, miss. My name's Hal Belfast," he said, handing forward his card as he approached the bed. "And how can I serve you today?"

Hal bit his tongue behind his clenched teeth, cursing how cheesily artificial his dialogue seemed to have become. Couldn't he communicate with a young girl roughly his own age without sounding like a fast food advertisement?
"...Thanks." Erin spoke, clicking a couple buttons on her PET's screen and establishing a connection between her PET and Hal's. One for business, she quickly established the trade and held out a chip, nodding to him as she acknowledged his presence.

"I'll be wanting the speed upgrade soon, and thanks for your help again." She said, smiling slightly, then resting back in her hend, snickering quietly at Seraphim's antics.
"Never fear: I'll return post-haste with your speed upgrade," Hal replied as heroically as he could as he accepted the chip from Erin. The manner seemed to have become embedded in his personality, whether TV cameras were around or not. "You just w-" he began, before realizing what a terribly insensitive thing it would be to tell a bed-ridden young girl to stay in one place while he was gone. "...W-worry about your Navi, whatever he's doing," Hal picked up the save, laughing as he darted out of the room.

"Huh, I don't know when I'm gonna get used to having to be the mature one... it feels like I'm caught between the two worlds," Hal said, banging on the side of the empty elevator with his fist as it carried him to the bottom floor. Still, right now he had a job to do. Within moments, Hal had signed out and taken to his helicopter, departing for the store in Sci-Lab.
After touching down outside the hospital, enduring the incompetence of the front desk help staff, and tapping his foot impatiently, Hal once again emerged in the room of the sick girl. His own eyes, showing dark rings beneath, were beginning to show that he may have been missing sleep in whatever timezone he was supposed to be in. Nonetheless, he adopted his same charismatic grin as he approached her.

"The total worked out, and here's the upgrade as promised," he said, producing the package dramatically from his pocket. "Thanks again for the trade. Here's hoping you have a great day, okay? Contact me again if you need me... um... I guess you can call Belfast Inc., perhaps," he commented, putting his hand to his chin, "but I don't have an e-mail to provide at this time. Well, you have my card," he concluded, turning and heading for the door.

Hal found himself struggling with positive words to give her... a child bedridden like this made things difficult. He couldn't simply say, "Hope you get well soon," or any such thing like that. He gave a final anxious glance back to see if she could tell if his confidence was faltering, but reinforced it himself with another winning flash of the teeth as he waved his hand farewell.
She smiled quietly, then replied, "Thank you."

"H-have a nice day." She said, struggling to get the words out, and watching Hal leave, she kept her smile for another few seconds bedfore lapsing into a sigh. Some people did help out, and some people didn't. At least some were trustworthy.
And here we are. It wasn't hard to find... Was Jared's thought as he looked at the room's nameplate next to the open door open door... it read "Erin Nagasaki". Thankfully, that nice (and pretty....) nurse I ran into earlier knew that "Rein" was a screen name. She also told me this person could be a bit prickly and proud, but didn't say anything else.... But at least this is the last installation procedure I'll need to perform. And then.... Then, I can go home and relax.

Jared smiled at the thought of finally getting to go home for the day... It had been a long day. First a short run to Netopia's network, where he'd browsed through the current events of his home network. They'd declared a new President and a new Prime Minister, both, duly elected to their respective offices. The Cheif Arbiter had welcomed his newly elected peers from the executive and legislative branches at their joint inauguration ceremony. NAXA had launched a replacement NetCom satellite to replace a damaged one. Aaand... that's all. The rest hadn't interested J.T. in the least.

Then there'd been the darkchip raid.... Jared scowled, his brow furrowing in thought. I'm not going to think about this now. I need to get this done, then get home.

As his thoughts returned to the final part of his last task of the day, J.T. smiled again, his dark expression evaporating. Right, this is the last installation... The word "last" triggered another thought... and Jared's smile slipped a bit on one side and became more fixed as a shadow crossed his brow... Please, God, don't let Erin Nagasaki be another Nancy Pinkerton. ...his right eyebrow twitched a little as he recalled the curmudgeonly old lady's name... 'Madame Nancy Margaret Pinkerton the third', ash she'd called herself, had given him enough hell in the... 28 minutes and five seconds, of installing her com gear (which turned out an actual world record time for the procedure) that he thought she's surely outlive him if the reverse of the ancient adage "Only the good die young" held true.... She's like to live forever. I wonder what blighted hand life dealt her to make her as I found her... Impossible.

...Broadside hadn't been thrilled either. But he'd held his peace until they were safely out of earshot...

He exhaled, using a calming technique a fellow NNCSI technician had taught him back in North Netopia for quickly ridding himself of stress after dealing with what he'd jokingly called 'special' customers or the occasional idiot brass. Jared had needed to use the calming technique a scant five times in the years since, a testament to his patience and easygoing nature more than anything, and this was the fifth. The technique wasn't anything really special or difficult, anyone could do it if they knew how. And it worked, as it had before, his smile returning as he remembered the other 3 residents of the hospital. Happier thoughts, all....

Jared knocked on the open door frame in his own fashion to warn the occupant of his impending entry before he spoke in a professionally even, yet genuinely courteous voice...

"Hello? Miss Nagasaki?" His words carried him through the door and into the room... He saw a young girl lying in a life-support bed, and smiled as he addressed her as he would have any other customer... "Miss Nagasaki? Good afternoon, I'm Jared Farnam. I'm here from Sci-Lab to install your new com-gear and update the software." He moved to stand near the table next to the bed, and set the three packages he'd picked up for her onto the tabletop. He then reached into his right-leg cargo pocket as he continued speaking "Those are your upgrades; three Navicust Expansions, I believe... And this..." J.T. paused for a short span of time as he drew out the card that Suitachi had slipped him... "...is from Suitachi., the store owner." He set the (unopened) card next to the stack of upgrades, within easy reach of the customer.

(He had pry-folded the inside tabs of the box with the thin blade of his knife, making the boxes much easier to open without actually disturbing the tamper indicator seal on each box, but he had no intention of admitting to that unless she brought it up. Especially since the (really cute...) nurse had warned him about Erin... after he'd done it, unfortunately.)

He then turned and made his way to the wall panel concealing the room's NTC-3 node box. He pressed on the sunken release mechanism, popping the handle out, and opened the door. Inside was another Netopian-made NNCSI unit, just like the other four he'd worked on today... and he mentally whistled for the 5th time today... They spared no expense when they outfitted this hospital. That makes my job so much easier.... As he took out a small rounded box with 4 stubby "legs" and a strange tool and reached into the little compartment, he spoke over his shoulder to Erin without turning his head, "Don't mind me. This procedure is easy, but time consuming. I'll be here for just short of an hour. Is that alright with you?"

He connected the small box to the building's power circuit as he spoke. After he finished speaking, he listened for her response as he drew out his PET, and set up a wireless connection to the NTC-3 node's BIOS and the temporary traffic bypass box he'd just powered on. He then looked at his Navi and spoke "Alright, Broadside, this is our last installation. Go ahead and switch the com routing and start monitoring the signal."

A brasso voice, at low volume, responded from the PET "Affirmative."
Someone- Had just walked into her room, and started working on something, she didn't have a single idea what he was talking about, besides the fact that he had given her her items, which she installed, and then glared daggers at him. Who was he to come into her room and begin working on something, muttering some technical jargon to complete her confusion and vulnerability, hell, that was the modem he was working on! He was probably installing some bugs in there to inhibit her navi while providing excuses to-

"You there!" She called out, anger and frustration evident in her voice as she slapped a chip into her PET, flinging out a hand with another chip between two fingers accusingly.

"Who the hell are you, and what the hell are you doing?!" She called out, and- started her rant.

"It's impolite to come into other people's rooms without permission, much less giving them weird jargon to tell them that you're probably installing viruses in my modem! You're harrassing me, and I want you to get out of my room right- kahakk!" she was suddenly thrown into a violent coughing fit, throwing up little bits of red onto her palms as she doubled over, hacking out blood.
Another tirade... Wonderful... She's going to give me no end of trouble just like the last customer. was JT's thought as Erin started in on him with her complaints. He sped up his work the moment he heard the beginnings of her discourse of displeasure... I suppose they didn't tell her I would be here and why... Still, I really don't need this while I'm working. I'll have to bring that up with the staff when-- His thoughts were cut short as he heard Erin begin to cough... a lot. He turned his head just in sime to her convulse, cough up blood, and double over in pain.

His eyes widened a bit... OH SHIT!! She's having some sort of attack! Wait... Wait... Help. She needs help. Now where is...? JT began to cast about the room for the emergency switch all hospitals had installed on the walls in each room. He spotted it on the wall next to the short entry hall he'd walked through when entering the room. Found it. He stepped quickly over to the covered button, flipped the cover up, and then slapped the switch to summon medical help. Good, help will be here shortly... but... now what? I'm not a doctor... Not knowing what else to do at this point, he spoke to Erin, his voice as worried as his expression... "Hey, hang in there. I've called for help." And wordlessly added to himself: Which is about damn all I can do... Helpless to do anything else, he stood there and waited for the medical team to arrive.

And completely forgot about his Navi for the moment...

Less than a minute later, the medical team arrived at the room. And all J.T. could give them was: "I'm sorry. She got bent out of shape by my being here, got overloy excited, and had an attack of some sort." Jared turned to the accompanying large and unsmiling male orderly and showed the man his Sci-Lab ID... "I'm Jared. I'll finish up my work here and be on my way, as requsted by the hospital director. I'll be out of here in another 5 minutes."

The orderly nodded and stood by Jared, keeping an eye on him just in case while he continued his work. J.T. cut a few corners, pulling data configurations from the other units he had already installed, and snapped the fully programmed chip in. He closed the case, rerouted the com signal through the new box, and packed up his gear.

"Alright, Broadside, we're done. Jack-out." His Navi responded "Affirmative. Logging out." ...then returned to the PET. Jared nodded to the orderly and left quietly, glad to be done with his duties...
Erin collapsed, first falling to her knees before hacking out more dark blood onto the sheets. As Jared hit the button, she faintly noticed she couldn't breath, the only thing that was coming from her throat was blood. As the medical team rushed in, she blacked out, her hand grasping the sheets, in a vain effort to reach her PET to help her navi, a kind act quite unlike her, but futile nonetheless, the hand flopped over as the medical went to work with deadly precision, quickly isolating the problem, the throat had almost literally sloughed its skin, basically swelling up extremely, while making her choke on her own blood. Fortunately, she hadn't gone further in her speech, and hadn't damaged her throat much further, which would have probably killed her before getting to the source of it. One slapped a mask on, and began his work, taking out a long white remote and shifting the control, pressing the button as a needle came out, and jabbing it into the closest vein. He removed it after it had injected its green, slightly luminescent load, then switched it to another, a laser needle, which stitched and fused the flesh of her throat back near-seamlessly, as the man stood back and sighed, the medical team watching.

"What are you waiting for? Replace the sheets, and replace the drip for her. Start the dialysis early. This girl won't die until we let her, and that, I'm not about to let happen." He snapped off the gloves as he finished his little speech, and began to take of his mask as he stalked out.
The girl stirred on the white sheets, her hand reaching up to her face and wiping away sweat on her forehead, grasping for the sole light in the room, upon the nearby cabinet. She flicked it on after a bit of groping on the lamp, and looked about the room. She- remembered pain. She brought her legs up to her chest and shivered, looking about the room with tear-blurred eyes. She... Could have died. At that very moment, she could have died. Choking on her own blood. On her own- She shook her head. She was forgetting something...

Her PET!

She quickly scrabbled about on the bedsheets, looking for a place where it made an impression, then looked to the door. There stood the doctor that had saved her life earlier, holding her PET and chips. He slowly walked over and placed them on the bed, in easy reach.

"Netbattling isn't a healthy sport for you. You could easily overwork yourself like you did yesterday." He turned around, and slowly walked away, waving before he opened the door, closing it tight, leaving Erin there a minute, staring at the PET, obviously off, before touching it and bringing the item as well as the bag into easy reach. She booted up the PET, and slipped out the chips. She needed to save her navi. The words of the doctor already forgotten, she clicked chips into the slot with ease.
Wes entered the hospital and stopped in at the front desk. Asking for information on a patient, he was then escorted to the room containing the person he was seeking. With a polite nod of thanks, he then entered the room and looked at the contact. He then looked over the occupant of the room. Seemed she was in worse shape then he could have predicted. After a few moments, he spoke, "So, are you the one who made the request on the BBS? My name is Wes. What did you require?"
Someone was at the door. She tilted her head, bringing the door into proper view. She brushed her hair impatiently back as she waited for him to say something.

"So, are you the one who made the request on the BBS? My name is Wes. What did you require?" he asked her, as she stared back at him rather cynically. She sighed, and canceled out of her view of Seraphim making a miniature speech upon the meaning of life and how it could all be translated into helping him defeat the monsters and the boss, his assistants, and such. She touched her way to her bank account, staring at the hefty sum there and wincing slightly.

"Okay, I'd like to buy a Speed upgrade, it would be my third one for Seraphim.exe, my navi. I'd obviously be providing the money, so thanks, if you'd do this for me." She finished up with what she seemed to think was a charming smile, which turned out to be a grimace. She had problems with trusting this person, but he was the only one that had responded so far, and she'd have to get this speed upgrade in a hurry.

"So, I'll send it to you so you can make the purchase." She said, this time actually smiling. Her navi, however, was doing no such thing, still on his lecture.
"A third Speed upgrade? Aren't those things 15000 zenny? And you'd loan all that to a stranger, so he could buy a part for you? That seems a bit risky." Wes pulled out his PET and popped up a few holograms with various information on it, "Before doing something like that, you should at least check up on your delivery service to make sure they are reliable. For example, as I've already said, my name is Wes, though that's still sort of vague. My navi's name is Soulman_Junior.EXE. You can see his image here." Wes brought up his navi's data file, showing his appearance, "With information like this, you can easily track us down. Now then, any thing else you'd like to know before I carry out this favor?"
"That's true." She said reluctantly, sighing as she stared at the navi, submitting it to memory. She'd have to be more careful in the future, that was true. But at least this person was showing her his navi before doing anything. Of course, he could be a con artist simply doing it to get her trus- No, she was reading into things too deeply. Forcing a smile, she spoke.

Wes? My name is Erin Nagasaki, and this is my Navi, Seraphim.exe." She held up the PET of her own, showing an image of her navi slapping a hand down on an unseen table while pointing dramatically with the other.

"He's an eccentric sort." She shrugged in explanation, "No, there's not really much else. Well, I don't want to take too much of your time up, anyway."

Send:15,000z to Wes
"Don't worry about time. The only other thing I have to do today is operate my navi and he's strong enough to bust solo. Plus, he has a partner so at the moment so my assistance is unrequired. I'll return shortly." Wes said, nodding politely. He exited the room, then the building and headed off to the shop in Scilabs.
Wes made his way back from Scilabs. He walked into the rom and placed the requested upgrade on the side of the bed beside Erin. He nodded politely, "This is what you wanted, correct? I do have one suggestion for you, though. Zenny can be sent quite easily over the net and if I remember correctly, Suitachi does have an e-mail for the shop... perhaps sending money that way would be safer. All you'd need would be someone to pick it up. That'd discourage anyone thinking they could simply collect the zenny from you and then scram. Of course, if you can find someone reliable to buy stuff for you, that solution would be better still. Hmmm..... anyway, did you need or want anything else?"

((Hands over Speed Upgrade 3))
Wes's PET began making weird noises. Alarmed, he pulled it out and looked over the problem, "Shit! These PU's are breaking up. It seems Junior's abilities should still be in tact since he isn't connected to this right now but... damn, better cash in on the warrenty at Suitachi's before I reestablish contact." Wes annoyedly disinstalled all his Process Upgrades and put them in a pocket. He sighed, "Well, looks like I have to head back over there. If you need anything else, let me know now because I don't feel like making a third trip."
"Uh, no, I just- Seraphim's data is turning weird. Huh." Erin commented on the flux in the data, tilting her head sideways as she stared at the program setup, which looked something like a 3d 2d tree, multiple paperlike trees with branches, which linked to other trees, some smaller than others, in layers.
"Weird? What part of his system is acting up? I can always get Suitachi to look over it if you give me a copy of the data to show him." Wes stood poised, ready to go.
