Do they have tennis courts here?

Tennisman was anxious to see just how powerful his Ace Serve was and decided to test it out immediately. The Swordy virus looked as if it would make a nice target prompting him to launch up a cluster of tennis balls.

"Ace Serve." He said, initiating the attack.

Desmond was right. Each strike he made was definitely stronger and the balls were much faster than before, leaving behind longer trails as they rocketed towards the virus. However, as an unexpected side effect, his arm ached after using the attack. He didn't think he could do it again soon and clutched his shoulder.

"Powerful, eh?" Desmond said, "Okay, Moonblade time! I want to see this!"

A large ninja blade appeared in Tennisman's hand, which was still draped over his shoulder. He sheathed his racket on his back, much to his arm's discomfort and dashed in quickly towards the group of tall bamboo stalks. There were Kilbies hiding behind them and luckily for him, grouped close enough for one critical attack. The Moonblade chip provided him instinctively with the knowledge of how to use the weapon, requiring him only to wield it. He pulled his arm back and slashed the kunai forward in an enormous arc. The tip of the knife carved a curved glowing path around him, revealing the origin of the name, Moonblade.

"Yeah, we're using that one more often." Desmond commented.

The blade vanished after the attack leaving Tennisman in the midst of his attackers. He turned and crouched, raising his arm and transforming it into a cannon.

"Heatshot." Tennisman said.

He tried to aim for the pair of Bombcorns in a line to optimize his attack but there wasn't time to be picky. He fired and retreated a little, calmly calling for another chip, "Guard."

He needed his racket for this and pulled it off his back again. Again, his arm ached. The Guard chip loaded, adapting the racket's face and reinforcing it with a yellow hue. All he had to do now was return the next attack with it. Tennisman was so focussed on returning an attack, he didn't notice the excess energy he was pouring into his racket.

Tennisman slaps his balls all up into the swordy's face, killing the security guard. He then rushes the Kilbies and cuts through two of them with his Moonblade, sending the towers of bamboo toppling to the ground. He then turns on the bombcorn and taking aim with a heatshot, torches a pair of them. He then puts up a shield. The last bombcorn fires on Tennisman, though the damage is reflected. The swordy guard finally catches up to Tennisman and with a swing of his sword, he knocks the navi's racket away and tackles him.

Tennisman, caught completely off-guard by the unorthadox attack, struggled against the virus. He had been disarmed in the attack but he doubted that having a racket would help him now as he clutched the Swordy's stubby arms, trying to avoid getting stabbed.

"Get... OFF!" He shouted, giving one last push and clearing himself from the close quarters encounter.

He spun around frantically trying to find his racket and spotted it lying just out of reach. He clawed at the ground trying to gain some traction before his legs kicked in and launched him in an unstable dash to his weapon. He dove for the grip and snatched it up while rolling forward.

He turned to face his opponent with renewed vigor and boldly announced his next attack, "Windracket."

The air around his racket picked up speed as he charged forward and swung it in a wide arc in front of him. A wall of razor winds exploded from the simple wave wreaking havoc with the grass and everything else that wasn't bolted down. The gusts died down soon after the brief outburst, leaving Tennisman too spent to continue. He knelt and pressed his hand to the floor.

"Netplay." He whispered, giving himself a mesh barrier and a momentary reprieve.

The Kilby's spear punched through a hole in the net and stretched it to its limit, barely reaching his face before retracting. Tennisman didn't even have the strength to back away from the attack and had just managed to luck out. He blinked and got up after being given a moment catching his breath.

"Ohhhhh, that was CLOSE!" Desmond said, "Yo! I have a new chip for you to try."

"Where are you acquiring these new chips?" Tennisman asked.

"Mostly trades." Desmond replied simply.

Tennisman nodded and prepared himself for another new experience.

"Here it comes!" Desmond called out while slotting in the chip.

Tennisman channeled the chip data and felt something materializing in front of him. It was small and grey with stripes. More of it came together like a jigsaw puzzle being completed, adding more details. It had a large brushy tail and stubby little legs holding up its fat body.

"What is it?" Tennisman asked.

"I dunno," Desmond said, "The chip's called PickPocket1. It was busted when I got it but-"

Tennisman interrupted with real concern in his voice, "I am sorry. The chip was damaged?"

"Well, yeah, kinda..." replied Desmond sheepishly, "But you know, I TOTALLY fixed it so it's good! It's good!"

"Where did you learn how to fix damaged chips?" Tennisman asked.

"There was this chip modding site I found. You just have to crack it open with a screwdriver and all you need is like a soldering iron... I kinda messed up before but this time it's good."

Tennisman listened with horror, learning that his weapons were being tampered with in this manner. He looked back down at the compiling creature, fearful of what might spawn from Desmond's 'repairs'. Finally, the head finished forming and the thing turned around and stared at Tennisman for the first time.

It was wearing a large, heavily decorated, red festival mask. Tennisman was sure that something wasn't right and Desmond had made an error somewhere in his efforts. However, it idled about as if waiting for a command; Perhaps it was waiting for a target. Tennisman looked at it and wondered what could be the worse that could happen if he sent it out? Even if it exploded, it would be helpful if placed properly. There was nothing to lose.

Tennisman leaned in close and looked at the virus that had attacked him last and spoke as clearly as he could, "That Kilby," he pointed at it, "Go."

With no further delay, the plump creature bolted straight towards the virus must faster than Tennisman expected. It dove into the tall grass, rustling about as it did... Something.

Tennisman couldn't afford to just wait and called for a chip, "Cannon."

He turned and fired a quick round at the last Bombcorn virus having already weakened it earlier. He glanced back at the where the Kilby was and noticed the tussle was still going on among the shifting stalks. He pitied the strange creature knowing that he possibly sent it to its death like that, even if it was a simple program with no real intelligence.

"HP reading." Tennisman requested.

"Kilby virus, 90 HP." reported Desmond, "One Kunai chip should finish it."

It was still at full health meaning the Pickpocket chip had done nothing. Tennisman looked disappointed but at least he was still in good health and the virus had not healed. In retrospect, the chip was reported as damaged. It was not as if Desmond could really be expected to fix something as complex as battlechip circuitry on his own. The grass finally stopped shaking and Tennisman nodded, waiting for Desmond to send the chip.

A handful of blades appeared in his hand and just as Tennisman was about to throw them, Desmond shouted, "WAIT! Look!"

From out of the greenery burst the vibrant red mask of Tennisman's little minion, the feathers and beads trailing behind in the wind. It had survived and was rushing back to him, bounding the distance between them in short hops. The Kilby's yellow eyes hiding in the shadow of the underbrush looked furious.

Pickpocket... It's a thief!

Tennisman felt stupid for not realizing it sooner but the chip was intended to steal something, not to deal damage. He stared at the creature in awe but was even more surprised by Desmond, who seemed to have actually fixed the chip as he said.

"Oh shi- Look out!" Desmond yelled.

The virus was still alive but Tennisman would see to that. He flicked the trio of knives at the Kilby and prepared his arm cannon to finish it off.

At any rate, a Raccoon with a mask popped out of nowhere and scurried toward the Kilby, swiping at it while Tennisman shot the remaining Bombcorn down out of annoyance. It soon returned, carrying... a pitifully small amount of zenny. Oook.
The shadowy Bamboo virus screeched in annoyance before Tennisman silenced it with three expertly thrown Kunai and a Cannon shot.
The Bandcoon then bowed clumsily, popping out of existence.

"TOLD YOU I fixed it!" Desmond bragged.

"You did." Tennisman replied.

"Yeah, yeah... I know you doubted me you... Doubter." Desmond added

Tennisman nodded and went along with whatever his operator had to say. He had accomplished a fairly impressive task and deserved a moment to bask in his victory as Tennisman did in his. The small amount of zenny the Pickpocket had given him was meager, but every little bit counted.

"So we keep going or what?" Desmond asked.

There was still a lot of Yumland Net that was still unexplored and he was still no closer to finding the source of the virus increase. Tennisman sighed and continued hoping his next battle would bring some answers.

((Battle 9))
Tennisman moves on and comes accross a bigass pit filled with Pungi. One the other side sits a line of Totem. Sitting on top of their heads is a Zemon. Then, to make things even move unpleasent, on each side of Tennisman, a Spikey approaches. Also, across the pit some green mystery data floats back and forth in the middle.

"Oh... Crap," groaned Desmond, "Keep your racket handy."

Tennisman felt overwhelmed at the enemies not know which would strike first and feeling all the more vulnerable while wading through the grass. He felt like a sheep in a lion's den amongst the fire viruses. It was hard to formulate a strategy knowing that whatever he didn't delete would attack right away. He had no time to stall and needed chips right away.

"Zapring and Guard." He said.

With a quick flick of his wrist, he fired off the paralytic charge at one Spikey while deftly spinning his racket in his free hand. The Guard chip activated, causing it to flash yellow before his hand clasped the grip tightly. He turned to face the Spikey on his left with his racket, confident that his Zapring had done its work. As he considered how he would attack it, he instinctively snapped a quick peek down into the pit before recoiling at the stench.

"What's in there? More grass panels? Killbies?" Desmond asked.

"I have no idea but it smells terrible." Tennisman replied.

Tennisman turned his face away from the smell but his eyes retrained themselves on the Spikey.

"Wait, is that more mystery data over the pit?" Desmond asked.

"Yes," Tennisman replied, adding his next request, "Heatshot and Shotgun."

"So lucky!" cheered Desmond, "And we just got a Guard too!"

Tennisman had more pressing concerns than reaping the rewards of a battle not yet won. His back straightened up and he turned to the side to minimize his surface area presented to the virus. He charged the Heatshot in his arm cannon until it was ready to fire, but he continued to hold it. More power spilled into the round chamber powering it up further as Tennisman traced his target's movements.

Desmond was impatient, "...What are you waiting for? Shoot."

The energy built up to a critical point and a thin trail of smoke rose up from the barrel. He couldn't hold it any longer. The gun suddenly fired a bolt of fire, charring the air black as it shot towards the virus before culminating in an impressive explosive burst.

"Wow that was awesome, how come you don't do that more often?" Desmond asked.

"It is draining." Tennisman said, turning around and firing off the Shotgun at the second Spikey.

Tennisman, not sure about the trench in front of him, wisely decides to deal with the more pressing issue of the two dogs trying to pincer him first. He first shoots the spikey on one side with a zapring, leaving in no position to attack for at least a little while, and he then materializes a defense over his racket. He then turns around and, with the aid of the very ground he stands on, deletes the second spikey with a single firey hit. He then spins around yet again to finish off the stunned enemy, leaving his side clear. Of course, on the other side of the field, things aren't so honky dorie. Two of the Zemon stick their swords inside a totem mouth and pull it out flaming. They then throw them at Tennisman. The one he smacks back, severely burning the virus. The other goes wide and lands a few feet away from the navi, burning up the grass. Then, in a move that just screams, "You dick!", one Zemon sneaks to the edge of the pit and, reaching out with its sword, pokes the mystery data. What a bugger.

"AHH! THE MYSTERY DATA!" screamed Desmond.

His voice rang in Tennisman's ears making him wish he had more volume control when his operator talked to him. But they did share a similar concern. That Zemon had to be stopped before it destroyed that data.

"I have an idea," Desmond said.

It was a phrase rarely appreciated by Tennisman but he had no reason to argue. He nodded and waited for further instruction.

Desmond explained, "Let's try a little misdirection. I'm sending a bunch of bomb chips. Get your racket ready and load the bombs into your cannon clip."

Tennisman already had his racket in his hand and only waited for the chips to form. The transparent clip above his cannon showed a Minibomb, which was pushed up by a pair of smaller bombs he had never seen before. Finally a Lilbomb popped up at the bottom of the tube pushing the other three up higher. With exactly four of them, he felt obligated to try an duplicate his Ace Serve. He aimed his arm up but was stopped.

"Wait!" Interrupted Desmond, "Lob them."

Tennisman objected, "Even if the Totems are stationary, lobs will give the Zemons time to dodge them." he pointed out.

"Hurry! It'll be fine!" Desmond replied.

Tennisman's face gave away his distaste for this plan but he went through with it regardless. The tip of his barrel spat out the Lilbomb like a cheap spring loaded toy. Tennisman's arm swang low and caught the bomb at the base of the arc, sending it soaring into the sky. He knew it was going to land in the dead center of the viruses if they decided to not to flee.

"Nice! DublBomb the end two next!" Desmond said with excitement.

The pair of new bombs were also launched into the air with slight changes in their trajectories. The Lilbomb hadn't landed yet when Tennisman served up the last Minibomb at the Zemon that had attacked the mystery data. There was a definite lack of satisfaction knowing that it was entirely futile gesture but he had faith that this was part of Desmond's grander scheme.

Suddenly Desmond blurted out "GO! PICKPOCKET!"

A red and grey blur darted past Tennisman's feet. Partially formed paws and a compiling tail made him realize the Pickpocket chip had activated. While Tennisman could hear Desmond's voice loud and clear, the viruses could not and were probably looking to the sky after his obvious attack.

"Sorry, I had to use the 'Pusher' program to run Pickpocket." Desmond said, "I needed it to be a complete surprise."

"Why is stealing a few zenny from a Zemon so important to you?" Tennisman asked.

"Hehe, I'm not trying to steal its zenny." Desmond chuckled, "I'm trying to steal its sword."

Tennisman throws a bunch of bombs, the angle being high enough to avoid hitting the Mystery Data. They come crashing back down all over the other side of the field, some having better results than others. The first hits a pair of the Totems. The next lands on the one Zemon still standing on its totem, blasting the both of them, though their neighbors stay safe. The last one simply hits what it is supposed to. A raccoon then goes charging ahead and falls into the pungi pit, dying horribly. The Zemon who missed with his throw last time pulls out another sword and using a Totem, he lights the weapon on fire again. Then, taking more careful aim this time, he launches the weapons and sets Tennisman afire, for a few seconds anyway. The Zemon who is now without his base gets pissed, runs to the edge of the trench, and slashes at the Data twice. The first one reaches, but the second one proves more wide than long and it instead causes the Zemon to fall into the Pungi. The others seem content to just chill.

"Okay, that failed. My bad." Desmond admitted.

That was when one of the Zemon slashed at the mystery data again before falling into the pit. A clear fissure could now be seen on the crystalline structure.

"The mystery data is close to deletion," Tennisman pointed out, "One more hit will completely destroy it."

"ARGHH!!" Desmond yelled in frustration, "Ace Serve the pair on the left!"

Tennisman complied and immediately executed the quadruple serve. One ball shot straight to the Totem while the other three targetted the Zemon above it. Just before the final ball was struck, Tennisman suspected there wouldn't be enough power to delete it. He focussed his hidden resevoir of power into the last serve, smashing it extra hard.

"Boomerang them all!" Desmond continued.

Tennisman channeled the chip into his racket as usual but noted a definite change in Desmond's personality. Although he was usually this excited he was also being reckless. It was subtle but Tennisman felt obligated to say something.

"Calm down." He urged his operator.

"THE MYSTERY DATA!" Desmond blurted out.

"...Might as well not be there." said Tennisman, "I want to save it as much as you but rushing in without a plan will not help anyone."

Desmond let out an anguished cry, "RAAAARRAGHGHGHH!"

"Kunai." Tennisman said.

"ARGHHHH BLARGH CRAP!" yelled Desmond before he inhaled sharply, "Okay!"

Tennisman tilted his body over to his left and swiped his racket up to the side, launching the green Boomerang wave around the pit. As it circled around the mystery data and threatened to cut down the viruses, Tennisman raised up his other hand. In between his fingers, three kunai spontaneously sprouted and were thrown at a Totem with a flick of his wrist.

Desmond sounded more calm and spoke with more clarity, "Drop an Energybomb on the Zemon and put it out of its misery."

The bomb appeared in Tennisman's hand a second later. He looked down and could see it struggling amongst the grime-encrusted spears. He held his breath and chucked the explosive in. As it left his hand, he realized the explosion might not only delete the virus but also blast the foul-smelling filth everywhere. Tennisman darted away quickly right before the bomb hit the bottom of the pit.

"Oh right." Desmond said as he noticed it too.

There was an explosion and a sudden eruption of broken spears and unidentfied fetid substances. It was all tossed up high into the air and rained down in a disgusting mess. Tennisman shielded his face but couldn't shield his nose well enough to protect him from the overpowering stench.

"Okay, that failed too. My bad." Desmond said again.

Even though his netop freaks out, Tennisman manages to stay clearheaded enough to serve balls accross the pit and avoid hitting the Mystery Data in the process. Desmond then picks a bit of a problematic chip, a Boomerrang. Tennisman throws the Boomerrang and in its first pass over the trench, it misses the Data. On the other side, it slices through first the totem, then its neighbor, than a Zemon in front, before it starts travelling back to Tennisman. As it crosses the pit yet again, the Mystery Data sadly begins moving in that direction as well. Whether is hits or not is going to be close, about 50/50. ((Flips coin, gets tails)) The weapon then crashes through the Mystery Data and then disappears a few seconds later. Tennisman then throws a blade into the last Totem, whic promptly ends the threat of being consumed by flames again. He then looks into the pit and sees the Zemon. It prepares to jump out of the pit, but before it can, a bomb is tossed into it and its deleted. On the other side of the field, the two remaining Zemon look around weakly. Their confidence wanely, one half heartedly throws a sword at Tennisman, though it misses.

Both Desmond and Tennisman could see the Boomerang on its return course with the mystery data swinging into its path. The two connected and the crystal shattered into a million pieces.

Desmond was the first to let out a disappointed groan, "...Ugh, damn."

Tennisman managed to keep his focus and avoided being skewered by a flying blade but the attack was half-hearted. Tennisman assumed the deletion of all their comrades must have demoralized the last remaining Zemons. He would have pitied them more if they hadn't been attacking him the whole time. Around them were bugfrags that Tennisman didn't want to leave unchecked.

He called his operator, "How is Deuce?"

"Him? He's pretty good now, I think." Desmond replied.

Tennisman nodded and decided to bring him in for clean-up. A beam of light pierced down from the sky and configured into the brash saucer.

Not two seconds had passed before the first comment was dropped, "God, why can't you do anything on your own?"

A frown passed over Tennisman's face as he answered, "There are bugfrags around that I do not want to-"

"Frags? Where?" Deuce interrupted.

Tennisman tried to continue, "They are scattered around the premises, but there are still two-"

Deuce cut in again, "Seeyuh!" before floating away to scoop up his fill.

Tennisman sighed vehemently before requesting his chips, "V-Gun and Aquaneedle."

"Hey, run Netplay while you're at it," Desmond suggested, "You could use a health boost while your battle routines are still set."

He had a point. They were much deeper in Yumland Net than they had ever been and there was no telling when he might have the opportunity to rest again. Tennisman reached out to one of the Zemons and let flecks of data converge on his arm, turning it into a modified shotgun blaster. He fired a compressed burst before dropping his arm back down to bring up Netplay.

"Looks like you'll have to kill your own net to heal..." Desmond added.

Tennisman didn't like that idea but went through with it anyways. He activated the Aquaneedle, assigning targets as he did. One spire dropped straight down over his net while the other two dropped over the last Zemon in quick succession. However, something caught Tennisman's attention.

"Did you hear something?" He asked.

Desmond replied, "Iunno." while Deuce was too busy feeding to care.

The strange sound that had distracted Tennisman in the final moments of the battle still had his full attention. Desmond and Deuce tended to the spoils as usual.

"I guess that Pickpocket didn't steal the sword like I wanted but at least we got this!" Desmond said triumphantly. "Ta-da! Katana1 chip data!"

Tennisman remained silent.

"Hey," Desmond called out, "You listening?"

There was still no reply from Tennisman as he continued to watch the horizon, searching for something.

"S'matter," Desmond asked, "You see something?"

Tennisman pressed a finger up to his lips and ushered a quick, "Shh!" before slowly lowering his hand back down. Something wasn't right. He could feel a lot of the system resources being diverted to run something close by, but he couldn't pinpoint the location. Everywhere he looked, minor programs looked drained of memory. Grass was glitching up and he could see pixels of lag in the wind. Whatever this thing was, it was big.

((BATTLE 10))
Tennisman is right, but the footsteps he hears are too far into the distance. Curious, he goes to investigate.

The sportsman treads carefully, looking for the sign of the disturbance, Deuce floating close behind him, before he smacks his head into something.

Rubbing his face, the navi was about to protest to the thing in front of him when he saw what is really was.

"MEH-TOOOOOOOOL" the giant Metool virus roared, stomping its left and right feet rapidly, making quite a few panels drop around them. The grass seemed to have scattered away from the virus' presence and the terrain was clear and normal.

"TOOOOOOOL!" Metzilla bellowed, narrowing its eyes at Tennisman.

Gulp.

-BATTLE 10-
-GO!-
As much as he didn't wish it to be true this one time, Tennisman was right. An enormous Metool virus wobbled before him, rendering him speechless. Looking around, its flailing had already converted the battlefield into an island. This would be a death match with only one of them being able to leave.

"That virus source you were looking for?" Desmond asked, "I think we found it."

Regaining his composure, Tennisman shook his head, "This virus is likely the result of bugfrags that were left unattended. I believe there is something much more sinister at work here."

Desmond suddenly blurted out, "IT'S COMING! GET READY! BATTLE ROUTINE SET!"

"Game start." Tennisman said, straightening up his back.

He immediately began by slamming his racket into the ground and integrating with the data. There was a small tremor before the previously normal panels quickly dessicated under his influence. Rather than a slow conversion into sand, the panels in front of him literally burst under the stress and instantly covered the ground with a fine white silt. He pulled his racket from the ground and retreated a step back onto the few remaining normal panels.

"Heatshot and Energybomb" Tennisman called out, "Deuce, blind him."

There was no snarky rebuttal which troubled Tennisman for a moment, but he quickly rationalized it as a sign that Deuce was as focussed on deleting this enemy as much as he was. He loaded up his Heatshot round while his support program gathered up a large heap of sand in a ball and launched it at the giant's eyes.

Not letting up in the slightest, Tennisman aimed at its large feet and unleashed a fire bolt.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU AIM HIGHER?" Desmond yelled, "AT LEAST GO FOR ITS FACE LIKE DEUCE IS!"

The energybomb appeared in Tennisman's hands as he pointed his racket at the point of impact. The sand, once coarse and grainy, had been heated to the point of melting and formed a layer of something clear and shiny.

"What? What is that?" Desmond asked, "Glass? Did you know that was going to happen?"

Tennisman didn't reply but quickly served his energybomb directly at the same spot. The first explosion created a small fissure in the panel but the bomb's second and third explosions exploited that weakness, spraying shrapnel upwards in an eruption of razors. He shielded his face as he made another step back, making sure not to overstep the bottomless boundaries of the field.

Tennisman switches the field to something more to his liking and Deuce takes advantage of it by blowing sand into the Metool's eyes. Bellowing in rage, the giant Metool jumps upwards as Tennisman launches a fireball at its foot, missing, but certainly creating some glass terrain. Descending back toward the ground, the unfortunate boss hits the glass as Tennisman makes it explode, dealing ridiculous amounts of damage to its left foot, and making it get stuck in the hole in the ground. The shockwave that resulted was a bit less harmful than if the virus had landed on something normal, but it still hurt, a lot. The MegaMet struggles hopelessly as it tries taking its foot out. Now! Hit its weakpoint when it's distracted!... If it has a weakpoint that is.
