Hyaaaaaaaaagh!

Memoriam rolled from the fall-- not that it really helped, just to keep moving-- and immediately started running again. Kazu wondered if the Navi ever got tired. What would it mean for a Navi to get tired anyway?

[Battle 4 is up next]
Bump
Memoriam was stopped by the sound of a heavy beat, almost like drumming. It wasn't long before he could see the source approaching him. It was a triangular formation of Kabutanks with a Spooky riding atop the lead one. Following behind were a well organized group of Melody viruses jumping in an alternating pattern. However, as soon as Memoriam was spotted, the Melodies immediately scattered, bouncing everywhere while the Kabutanks maintained their positions.

Memoriam suddenly-- skidded to a halt, and raised his arms to the heavens. And he stood there.

Kazu was dumbfounded by this extremely uncharacteristic strategy by his Navi. What are you doing? Stammered Kazu's voice, jittery as always. You want chips? I already gave you--

Memoriam suddenly gave out an ear-piercing shriek, as if he had fallen victim to some horrible malfunction that was overpowering his virtual body, forcing him to pour his life energy out through every orifice until it materialized in walls of blue-white energy that exploded with a terrifying shudder from the Net's surface, and reached as high to the invisible ceiling as the eye could see. The wave of power rolled slowly forward from all directions, tearing up the virtual Net-space as it advanced from all sides, threatening to tear asunder the Net itself and anything unfortunate enough to be trapped in its path...

Oh.

The illusionary wave engulfed Memoriam itself and moved forward ahead of him, obscuring his location and continually shrinking the apparent size of the arena.

Memoriam's favorite weapon materialized in his hand. Once the waves came together, to a size where the enemies inside would certainly be forced close together, he dove forward into it and took his first sweeping cut, plunging into the illusionary wall and driving a line of yellow through it with his sword until he exploded out the other side. The arena shrunk more-- he dove from another angle, emerged backwards and airborne, ready to take his final sweep.

He leapt into the air in a high arc, his face more than a little happy, a picture of grace and deadly precision. He passed more gently through the illusion wall this time, then dropped from the air once within to cut down his enemies with a circular spinning slash, a complete 360 degree twirl around his body that took up nearly the entire arena within the blue-white walls.

The illusion did its job and startled the Melodies and Kabutanks back into a tightly-knit cluster. The lead Spooky didn't appear affected and tried to regain control over the group but was mostly unsuccesful. As Memoriam dove into the fray, a hitch seemed to arise in his plan. The Melodies began hop around faster trying to escape from the phantasmal armageddon. The first slash from his sword deleted only one Melody as the nearby ones hopped into the air, unwittingly dodging the attack. The second strike deleted two while one Melody bounded off of Memoriam's energy shield, dissipating it. His final attack deleted one, but one Melody managed to evade all his attacks through sheer luck and responded by bounding off his head. By this time, the illusion was beginning to fade and the Kabutanks reared around under the Spooky's command. One fired a bomb, but as it was still disoriented and confused, it missed.

Memoriam recoiled from the head blow, but within nanoseconds he had recovered enough to jump in the direction his attacker had bounced off in. With a quick movement of the hand and torso, he tried to kill the virus for the insult with a mid-air swipe that drew a bright yellow arc around his body.

Memoriam landed in a crouched martial artist stance in front of the three armored enemies. His face was equal parts resolve and amusement as he considered his enemies' HP levels... the battle options available to him, and the possibility of ending it now without even using the ample ranged arsenal that Kazuhiro had generously supplied via PET.

Kazuhiro, too, evaluated the situation, but with an expression that even a Navi would find difficulty reading. Memoriam would compete in the open soon. Could Memoriam know that it would be his last fight with the same Operator? Kazu had gone through three Navis now; perhaps four depending on how you looked at it, but at least this would be the last time he had to see the "NO DATA" displayed on his PET. At least it would finally be over. Time to live, time to be an adult, a married man with a job. Somehow, the idea was pleasing.

Kazu knew that his Navi would have no trouble with the transition as he watched the next events transpire on-screen. Memoriam's head snapped up to look his enemies dead-on... and then he was gone. He flickered into view once, twice, three times, each time to deliver an earthshattering vertical kick to the undersides of the three trundling viruses, with enough force to launch a RockCube. Then he was airborne, twirling and striking in the air as naturally as if he were still grounded. The dance of weapon-data rose into the air, then ended abruptly as Memoriam ended one final spin by slinging his sword at the last virus with a flick of his wrist.

Memoriam makes quick work of the Melody, before bursting the three Kabutanks into the air, he nails two with his Elecsword on the first swing, and finishes the group off with the second, the sword not quite reaching the Spooky, who has zipped quite far away. Memoriam lands on the ground, weapon shattering.

Some people might feel sorry for the last virus.

You got this?

"I got this."

Memoriam calmly crouched, and poised his hands in a line pointed at the small, unimposing virus, in a position that mimicked holding a rifle. For several seconds, he just sat, with his hands in a ridiculous kung fu-esque position, pretending to line up a sniper shot.

Memoriam--

"I said, I got this. What, you think I couldn't stand fighting without you?"

Kazu started to say something, but he was interrupted by a barrage of weapon fire eminating from Memoriam's rear hand, continuing past where his front hand marked where the imaginary muzzle would be, and screaming up towards the Spooky. When his hands finished spitting fire, Memoriam's invisible gun cooled for only a half-second before it let loose one last, thunderous bass drumbeat of victory.

Memoriam, I have something to tell you.

"Don't bother."

What?

"Jack out, Kazu! We have a tournament to get to."

And with that, Memoriam was gone.
