Anyone read any of the novels in Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files?
I read White Night a few months ago and fell in love with the series. I managed to pick up the rest of the books, san Small Favor, last month and caught up to myself. Which means that I've read eight books in 33 days or so while working, going to school, watching t.v., hanging around here, playing video games and other random crap. Perhaps that'll illustrate just how damn good this series is. If you've read some of the series, discuss. If you haven't, then pick it up and read it...All of it.

So...No one has read anything from the series? Did anyone watch the show that was on SciFi?

I am interested in reading the series, but I'd like some more info before I invest my money in the series. Can you tell me more.

Well, the first book is called Storm Front and the author, as stated before, is Jim Butcher. The series is written in a 1st person perspective from the point of view of the main character, Harry Dresden. Dresden is a wizard, think Merlin and such, who lives in Chicago. He works primarily as a private investigator, giving the series a heavy mystery feel, though he also works as a consulant for the police. He helps solve crimes designated as "Special Investigations"...Kind of like the X-Files, but with less aliens and more vampires and demons. It is a contemporary fantasy, set in Chicago. The books are all around 300-400 pages with the later novels being slightly longer. I think the last one I read was near 500 pages. Uh...Any specific questions?

Hmmm, is he more 'magic is suport' or 'magic replaces my gun' or 'magic replaces my battle tank, my jet fighter, and my giant robot' type powerful with his magic?

It depends on the situation really. He's a full fledged wizard after all. His main attacks are a jet of fire, which he uses a focusing rod to properly control, blasts of kinetic force, gusts of wind and he can make a shield to protect him from force-based attacks (Ex: Bullets, swords, giant fists). Other than that, he has plenty of other tricks up his sleeve if he has the time to prepare...Summoning, location spells, potions...Other things.

Ok, so it's at 'replaces gun' level but not at 'I'm a walking military arsenal' level. That's good. I'll give the series a look this weekend, see hwo the first book works out.

Storm Front followed by Fool Moon and then Grave Peril. You have to at least read the first three to get the jist of the series.

Really, why? A lot of info, slow development, or do you need to read all three for soem other reason?

No, not really.
Storm Front introduces you to the series.
Fool Moon, while awesome, has little to do with the events of the series as a whole. It has an awesome werewolf though and introduces some important characters.
Grave Peril...The beginning of the major conflicts within the series, plus it introduces some more very important characters and ideas. Plus...Super Bad Ghosts!
