Both balls fired by Tennisman strike the Spikey, putting a decent dent into its HP. He then rolls a ringlog at both dogs. The first one leaps out of the way but the second, still a bit shaken from the previous attack gets hit with the weapon. Tennisman then works together with his SP to take down the Genin. He fires one last heatshot, which burns the spikey and the grass beneath it. The final virus then decides to get off one last attack and fires at Tennisman, striking him.

Deuce's beam pulled up another bugfrag from out of the cloud and sucked it into himself, absorbing it like he had done with the others. A lone Spikey had remained from his chain of attack, prompting Tennisman to fire off his Heatshot but he had underestimated its resilience. It survived the attack and counterattacked with its own Heatshot, the flames enhanced by the grassy terrain.
"Ungh!" Tennisman grunted.
His cry of pain alerted Deuce, who spun a little and quickly aimed his cannon at the Spikey.
"Sweet!" Deuce said, "One more for me!"
He let loose another yellow blast, recoiling him backwards a little. Tennisman was too taken by the Spikey's surprise attack to really focus but he was certain this time that Deuce was firing tennis balls.

The last of the viruses was finally deleted by a quick shot from Deuce's cannon. He wasted no time in greedily devouring the bugfrag left behind.
"So your name is Deuce?" Tennisman asked.
"I guess so." He replied, "Well... Seeya."
Deuce began to drift away from Tennisman, much to his surprise.
"Wait!" Tennisman called out.
"No, leave him." Desmond said.
Tennisman watched as Deuce continued to float away and the brightness from his green core fade. However, the distance building between them wasn't responsible for the dimness. The glowing light eventually flickered off and Deuce suddenly dropped from the sky, landing with a loud clank. Tennisman was confused.
"Deuce is kinda... Part of you, so he can't wander away that far or he'll just power off." Desmond explained, "I guess you could call him a... 'Support Program'?"
Tennisman wasn't sure how he felt about having Deuce as an ally considering how selfish and unpredictable he had been during the battle. He made his way over to the downed ship, hoping to revive him and get some answers.
"Why did you name him Deuce?" Tennisman asked.
"Oh! It's because you almost tied with him when you two were fighting before." Desmond announced, "I thought it was clever. You know, deuce, 40-40 tie..."
Tennisman nodded to his operator's interesting naming sense and knelt beside Deuce. His light was still off.
"Deuce." Tennisman called, tapping the glass bubble gently.
The glow returned slowly, along with his consciousness.
"Wargh..." He groaned, "...You again?"
"Deuce, you are a support program." Tennisman said calmly, "You cannot function if you dist-"
"GO AWAY!" Deuce snapped; the light flared up with his voice.
Deuce hovered up higher and jetted away yet again. Tennisman didn't give chase and watched as history repeated itself. Deuce had built up a lot of inertia and height this time, resulting in another crash more brutal than the first. Tennisman went to wake him up again.
"Deuce." Tennisman called, tapping on his dome.
"Ohhh..." Deuce moaned, "What the hell..."
Tennisman tried to talk faster this time, "If you try that again, you will crash."
Deuce didn't move or react at all.
Tennisman continued his explanation, "If you travel too far away from me, you will lose power. You were designed to support me."
"You!?" Deuce yelled in disbelief, "You suck!"
Tennisman tried to ignore his comment, "Be that as it may, you should-"
"Be that as it may..." Deuce mocked in a warped voice, "That's you!"
"Tell him there's bugfrags in it for him." Desmond suggested.
"I highly doubt that would work." Tennisman said.
"Bugfrags?" Deuce said, "What, seriously?"
"When I delete viruses, they do occasionally leave behind fragments." Tennisman said.
"So come on!" Deuce cried out with excitement, "Let's go!"
Tennisman still had a lot of questions, but they could wait. For now, he felt as if he had made a little progress with his new companion.
"Speed it up, jerkface!" Deuce said.
...Very little progress.

"Ah nuts," Desmond said, "They're all over the place."
Having his opponents spread out like this didn't feel right to Tennisman. In addition to their awkward positions, there were two new breeds of virus he had never encountered before; one set appeared to be some kind of ronin while the other pair looked like a hive of bees. He tensed up while trying to track them all. He at least recognized the Totems, who were also all poised to attack him.
"Netplay." He said.
The weak net would barely provide any cover, but it was better than nothing. He prepared an Ace Serve to follow up and thought about who to target. Deuce scanned the field considering the same dilemma and made a series of lip smacking sounds despite not having a mouth.
"I MUNNA EET CHU." Deuce called out while jetting forward.
"Stop!" Tennisman commanded.
Surprisingly, Deuce complied and stopped dead in his tracks. Perhaps he remembered what happened to him the last time he ventured too far.
"Whaaaaat..." Deuce moaned.
"Those are viruses, not bugfrags." Tennisman said, "If you keep rushing into battle, you will be deleted."
Deuce growled, "SAYS YOU! I could take them ALL out! ALONE! BY MYSELF!"
"No," Tennisman said. He stalled for a moment before continuing, "You are weak."
Deuce made a muffled grunt and silence followed. Tennisman knew he would hit a nerve with that comment but it had to be said. He preferred not losing his support program to a stupid mistake. Tennisman couldn't afford to console Deuce right now and shot up four balls.
"Ace Serve." He said.
He knew his Ace Serve had just enough strength to take down a single Totem and arbitrarily targetted one of them.
"Hey, try that new chip we just got." Desmond said.
After he had served the last ball, Tennisman found himself equipped with a handful of tiny blades. He wasn't sure how to use them and simply hurled them all at another Totem. They shot from his hand in a chain, faster and straighter than he expected. He doubted he could have distributed each of them to separate targets and made a note of that.
"...I'll show you." Deuce finally said.
Tennisman turned in time to see Deuce shaking. His core's light had nearly doubled in intensity and tiny motes of energy were being drawn into him from everywhere. If Tennisman had to guess, Deuce was probably charging up an attack.
"MAIN CANNON FULL BURST!!" Deuce cried out.
An impressive sounding shot sounded along with a large amount of smoke and recoil, but Tennisman could still trace the trajectory of the tennis ball that was fired. Its speed hadn't increased at all. In a moment of pity, Tennisman readied a Reflex Volley to cover Deuce again. He looked spent after his overzealous attack. It reminded him of a quote.
"A candle that burns twice as bright," Tennisman said, "Burns half as long."
"...Not weak." Deuce replied.
1 - Netplay (1-hit shield + 60 heal)

3 - Kunai TotemB (3 x 30 damage + slashing)

Tennisman heals and defends. He then peppers a totem with balls, felling it. He then uses his new chip and takes down another. HIs little buddy also gets in a little bit of damage. The viruses then begin to attack. One Zemon takes a slash at Tennisman, though the attack is blocked and it recieves some damage back. A second one then moves forward and figuring him to be an easier target, it cuts the SP. And the bombers... just sit there. Staring.

The viral attack proved too much for Tennisman to hold off as one of the ronins slipped past his guard and slashed at Deuce with a quick strike. The blade left a deep scar across the metal frame, exposing some of the code within.
"Deuce!" Tennisman called.
Deuce yelped in pain and retaliated with a long rant of expletives at his attacker, a few of which Tennisman didn't even recognize. However, his attention turned to the virus and he immediately retreated to take care of it.
"Windracket!" Tennisman said.
Tennisman charged back and raised his arm with his racket held high, even before the chip had loaded. A whirling aura of air formed around the handle and wrapped itself around the face. He inhaled sharply as he slammed it down hard on the virus like a meteor. A powerful gale of wind followed along with the sound of the air rushing in to fill the vacuum.
"Dick!" Deuce barked, "I coulda taken him!"
Tennisman showed some signs of frustration but tried to restrain himself. He glared at Deuce, pointed at the Totem he had attacked and simply said, "Look."
The virus was still in good health despite Deuce's tennis ball attack. There was a tiny scratch above its left eye, presumably where it had been hit.
"What..." Deuce whimpered, "I shoulda deleted that! What the hell? WHAT THE HELL!?"
Tennisman didn't think he had to explain his point any further and looked at the remaining viruses. The bee virii hadn't moved since he last checked so he decided to ignore them for now. The ronins were still wandering aimlessly but the Totem seemed like it would attack soon prompting Tennisman to try and take it out first.
"Minibomb." Tennisman said.
Desmond chimed in, "Right. Hey, I'm sorry. I should've said something about that Zemon."
Tennisman let the chip data load in his palm and tossed it up before replying, "Zemon?"
"Yeah," Desmond said, "Those guys with the hats are called Zemons, 100 HP. The bee things in the back are Honeybombers, 110 HP, wood type."
The minibomb was served at the stationary virus as Desmond talked. Tennisman took in the information and planned out a strategy.
"Deuce, attack the Totem." Tennisman ordered.
"Why?" quipped Deuce.
"You can delete it," Tennisman said, "And harvest some bugfrags."
Deuce wasn't stupid and could easily tell Tennisman was patronizing him, but the allure of bugfrags was too great. He growled and let out a little yell before firing off another tennis ball at the virus.
"Boomer." Tennisman requested.
His racket charged itself again and glimmered with a green hue as the Boomer chip downloaded. Tennisman was about to go for a wide strike when Desmond interrupted, "WAIT! Not the Honeybombers!"
Tennisman shifted his stance for a shallow swing and swiped the racket, trying to heed his operator's advice and steer clear of the bugs in the back. It was a difficult shot to make since the arc of the Boomer chip was usually large enough to encompass the field. However, he had a lot of experience handling it and didn't doubt his skills. The green wave twirled out and made a sharp turn before spinning back.
"Oh nice," Desmond commented, "The Honeybombers mostly counter, so unless you can finish them off, don't try it."
Tennisman nodded and took up his Junk Ball defensive stance. It was all he could do for Deuce now, who still looked tired from his earlier charge attack.

The Zemon moves out of the way of the Windracket, only getting caught by the breeze. Tennisman throws a minibomb, which puts it in bad enough condition for Deuce to kill it. Tennisman then hits two of the Zemon with the boomerrang. One of them try to attack, though it gets blocked.

"You missed!" Desmond pointed out.
Tennisman saw the Zemon that he had tried to delete with the Windracket had managed to evade his attack. Fortunately, his operator's words came just in time as the virus tried to strike back at him. He raised his racket and parried the sword away, simultaneously launching off a tennis ball at his assailant. The ball barely missed the virus as it dodged and retreated a little. These were exceptionally skill virii he was dealing with.
"Desmond," Tennisman called, "V-Gun, Shotgun, Zapring, LilBomb."
"All out, eh?" Desmond said, "Fine, let's do this!"
Tennisman turned to Deuce, who seemed to have recovered a portion of his strength judging by his light, "Deuce, can you bring the Zemons closer together?"
"What do you think?" Deuce replied bitterly.
Tennisman didn't press the matter and simply said, "Do it."
"Doo it..." Deuce mocked as he fired off a beam of green at the farthest Zemon.
Tennisman took in a deep breath and aimed his right arm at one of the viruses. It flashed into a Shotgun form. Tennisman fired twice, shifting only slighty to account for his different targets. His arm changed again and discharged with a shower of sparks. The cannon then reshaped itself into a hand, allowing him to catch the bomb as it materialized in front of him. He tossed it up and saw that Deuce was still struggling to maintain his beam. He had to get this attack just right or it would be a waste of his support program's efforts. His racket charged with the familiar yet unidentified energy that he was so determined to avoid using. But this time it was too late, the racket struck the bomb and transferred something to it. A small concussion of force exploded from the contact point, recoiling the racket backwards and sending the bomb rocketing straight to its target.
"Rrghh... Ungh!" Deuce groaned as he broke off the tractor beam, unable to keep it going any longer.

The V-Gun hits the target Zemon, as well as another off to the side. Then the Shotgun, followed by a Zapring, take out the two remaining Zemon. Then the bomb hits nothing, since the targets were all dead.

"WAIT NO MY BUGFRAGS!" Deuce cried out as he disengaged his beam.
The Zemons had already been deleted leaving behind a few bugfrags behind, but the Lilbomb had already been served. It exploded on target, engulfing the purple chunks in a ball of flame.
"NOOOO!" He moaned.
The smoke cleared and revealed the pieces were still intact despite the explosion.
"Huh," Desmond said, "I guess if you could just delete them, they wouldn't be a problem."
Tennisman nodded and looked at the remaining HoneyBombers. He had to take them out fast or suffer their fearsome counterattack, of which he knew nothing about. In all likelihood, they would shoot bees at him. He frowned at what he would have to do.
"Deuce," Tennisman said, "Please bring the right one in front of the left one. Desmond, 4 Heatshots."
"Hey, fu-" Deuce snapped.
Tennisman interrupted with a single word, "Bugfrags."
Deuce stifled his complaint and paused for a moment. He quickly relented and fired his tractor beam while mumbling something unintelligible.
Tennisman lifted his arm cannon up and waited for the inevitable shift to a Heatshot gun. The green square shape of his deafult cannon gave way to a sleek silver frame with a striped gauge on the side. He hoped it wouldn't overheat and took aim at the first HoneyBomber. He locked his reticle as well as he could and fired off a shot. The recoil made him lose his lock but he recovered his balance and fired the second shot. It burned. The second HoneyBomber was next. Tennisman gritted his teeth and fired at that one. The burning in his arm flared up twice as badly. He winced in pain not considering what the last shot would feel like. He took a series of short breaths and yelled, trying to divert his thoughts and focus on anything but the consequences of the last shot.
"RAAAAGH!"
He discharged the weapon one final time. It felt as if his arm had been hit by the Heatshot instead. The attack overloaded his gun; the meter on the side flashed red as it filled to the max. The metallic sheen of the weapon, now eminating a haze of superheated air changed back to a normal hand shape. Tennisman cradled his arm in agony and hoped that would be enough to finish the battle.
"Tennisman! You okay?" Desmond called.
"Pussy." Deuce insulted.

Tennisman fires the first shot, which hits a bomber, causing it to spew bees. His next hit finishes it off, and also hits the virus next to it, which does the same. As he preps the finishing shot, a few of the bees reach him, taking out his shield and then stinging him. Luckily, Tennisman takes out the final enemy before the attack is completed, making the swarm back off.

Tennisman plucked the stingers from his body as Deuce happily gorged himself on the bugfrags that had been left behind. While his support program was occupied, Tennisman activated his private communication channel with Desmond.
"Was Deuce's form your design?" he asked.
"Huh?" Desmond said.
Tennisman rephrased his question, "Did you make him into a flying saucer?"
Desmond laughed, "Hahahaha oh yeah, I thought it'd be cool. You don't think it's cool?"
"I fail to understand your reasoning." Tennisman said.
"Iunno. UFOs are cool." Desmond said simply.
A moment of silence followed before Tennisman nodded without further trying to understand his operator's feelings. Deuce returned sounding stuffed.
He burped, "That was great... Let's go get some more."
Tennisman wondered how Deuce could burp and decided not to go down that line of thought. There was nothing else to do here and the next battle awaited them. It was time to move on.

Tennisma comes upon another group of enemies. The Viney sit around the edges of the field, the EX being in the very back. The beetanks scatter themselves around the field, only taking brief pauses between movements. The Dragrin sit around the area in random location. Each side of the field is grass, with a big stripe of poison panels sitting in the middle.

Tennisman immediately assessed his situation given the horde of viruses in front of him. There were too many to deal with all at once and he needed to slowly reduce their numbers. Tennisman thought the Beetanks looked the easiest to take out and aimed for them.
"Shotgun, Lilbomb, V-Gun." Tennisman said.
"Those vine guys are Vineys. 80 HP and wood element." Desmond reported, "I picked up a sword on the BBS earlier so you can use that later."
Tennisman nodded and lined up his gun with the strafing Beetank. His arm still ached from the Heatshot barrage from the last battle and he didn't want to strain it too much. He fired and felt the recoil reverberate through his sensitive arm. He waved it a bit to shake out the feeling as his fingers reformed themselves.
"You sure you're okay, man?" Desmond asked.
Tennisman replied, "I am fine."
"I still think you're a pussy," Deuce retorted, "Watch me take out that big guy in the back."
Tennisman held out his arm, catching a LilBomb in the air and also barring Deuce's line of sight.
"No, do not draw unnecessary fire." Tennisman said.
"What!? You ARE a pussy! You afraid I'm gonna show you up, you pansy-ass?" Deuce yelled.
Tennisman didn't reply but struck the bomb at another Beetank. There was no pain this time, only the crisp followthrough of a nicely executed serve. He really needed more bomb chips in his folder. His free hand took up the shape of a gun again and he shot at the last Beetank virus. Again, the pain shot up past his forearm but faded just as fast. It was feeling better but not fast enough.
"You got no balls for a guy called Tennisman." Deuce continued.
"Deuce, you know I can delete your speech functions, right?" Desmond threatened.
Deuce grumbled but made no further insults. Tennisman made a small sigh and contemplated if Deuce was actually worth his keep.

The shotgun hits the Beetank and a viney that happened to be behind it. Then the bomb thrown hits Tennisman's target by caching it in the blast radius and it also hits a Dragrin. The V-gun takes out the last tank and also hits the same Dragrin. In resonse, the enemy attacks the pair, though both Tennisman and his companion dodge. After this, though, vines come out from the ground and catch the navi, holding him in place.

So that's how they attack...
Tennisman would have appreciated the newfound knowledge if only he were not under attack. The vines snaked up his feet and held him fast. He tore away at the tendrils only to have each one replaced by two more. When they reached his neck, they all constricted tightly. He continued to fight back, uprooting the shoots and struggling all the while. His air supply dwindled but he refused to give up. Thorns stabbed him for each movement he made but he could feel the vines loosening.
"Tennisman!" Desmond yelled.
With one final jerking motion, the final cord snapped and he was free. He stumbled forward, still covered with a few loose vines. Instinctively, he tapped the ground and activated his main defence.
"Netplay." He said.
The net sprang up from the grass and through the noxious line down the middle. Fresh poison dripped down from the middle of the mesh reminding him of the ever-present danger on the field.
"Chips?" Desmond asked.
Tennisman shook his head and readied an Ace Serve. His strikes scattered balls to different targets, each shot directed for a specific purpose. Two to finish off the weakened Viney, one to delete a Dragrin and the last one to draw more attention to himself.
"I'll ready the Sword," Desmond said, "Just in case."
Tennisman prepped his Junk Ball defence and waited for the inevitable counterattack. He had a plan to strike hard but he needed to bide his time for now. The viney attack had left him a little disoriented and he had to track his opponents again.
Meanwhile, Deuce had been tired of simply dodging attacks and couldn't help himself. He had never broken his sights from the big Viney hiding in the back and tried to draw it closer.
"...Munna eetchu..." Deuce whispered as he steathily activated his tractor beam.
1 - bound
2 - Netplay (1-hit shield + 60 heal)
3 - Ace Serve DragrinA, DragrinB (20 damage), VineyB (2 x 20 damage)
4 - Junk Ball (1-hit barrier + 10 drain)
Deuce - Gust VineyEX onto poison

Tennisman breaks free and then puts up a net. He then fires off some balls, which take out one of the Dragrin and also a Viney. He finishes up by placing one last defense. Deuce tries to drag a Viney forward, but with it being rooted into the ground, it doesnt work. A Viney tries to sneak under the net, though it catches the junk ball instead. One of the Dragrin, shoots out some flames, which takes down Tennisman's net.
