Do they have tennis courts here?

"Oh frig," Desmond said, "out of frying pans..."

Tennisman could tell that this was going to be a challenge. No one-turn deletion options were available and on top of that, there were two new viruses to deal with. What really caught his attention was how the group of viruses had completely incinerated the grassy area around them. However, he was still standing on the veritable field of fuel.

"Yo, those candles have HP." Desmond pointed out, "They're probably weak spots!"

Tennisman doubted that he could take out those angry-looking balls of flame just by putting out a few candles but they were probably important nonetheless. In any case, no amount of strategizing would delete these viruses for him. Tennisman gritted his teeth and psyched himself up for the grueling battle ahead.

"Ringlog and LilBomb." Tennisman said.

"Right," Desmond replied, "Go for the totem pole guys. You can kill them fastest."

Tennisman nodded and waited for the chip data to transmit. He had enough time to activate a Reflex Volley as the log took shape in front of him. The other viruses scuttled around, making them much harder to hit with a rolling log but the stationary Totems were a perfect target. They might as well have been designed as bowling pins. He shuddered a little, realizing he made a non-tennis sports reference. The log was given a firm boot and rolled to its targets.

"Run!" Desmond shouted.

The attack had drawn attention to him and all the viruses looked ready to attack him with a full barrage of attacks. Not even a Reflex Volley would be enough to stop everything. He had to make a break for it. The Totems wouldn't be taken down by a simple log and needed to be finished off. As he ran, Tennisman could feel the second chip in the queue. A Lilbomb appeared in his palm as he strafed around his targets. He couldn't stop to serve the bomb as usual and simply tossed it up high. He wasn't as used to simply throwing them but if it worked, it worked. He couldn't complain about results now.

"Right! Right right right!" Desmond blurted out.

Tennisman turned and tried to dodge out of the way.

1 - Reflex Volley (1-hit barrier + 20 damage)
2 - RingLog1 TotemA, TotemB, TotemC (50 damage)
3 - LilBomb TotemA, TotemB, TotemC (50 damage)
4 - dodge
Tennisman prepares his reflex volley attack by putting up a barrier before sending a massive rolling log towards the Totems. The log crashes into them, shredding itself into a mass of splinters. All three Totems turn around, revealing a set of 3 blue faces instead of red. One of the totems quickly activates it's power, healing itself completely. The LilBomb explodes next to the three Totems, deleting the 2 wounded ones and heavily damaging the last Totem. The Totem spins 180 degrees again and revealing its 3 red faces. All of the other viruses launch blasts of flames, some traveling across the ground and others tearing through the air. Tennisman is mostly successful in dodging the oncoming fire, only two viruses hit. The first hit drops his barrier and he counters with a tennis ball, and the second attack does minor damage.

"Shotgun." Tennisman said.

He locked his sights at the lead CanDevil, aiming to take out the candle behind it as well when he noticed something was off.

"One of the Totems is still alive." Tennisman said.

"Yep," Desmond confirmed, "Just barely."

"Did I miss?" Tennisman asked.

"Uhh... Not that I could see. That last one just healed." Desmond guessed.

It was then that Totem viruses earned a spot in Tennisman`s priority kill list. He fired off the Shotgun round at the CanDevil and quickly stared down the last Totem. Concerned that there was no time for chips, he instinctively activated his Ace Serve to bring it down quickly. All four balls might have been overdoing it but he still had some unfinished business with the CanDevil he had just been targetting. Four yellow streaks shot across to the two viruses in an unbroken chain. The CanDevil was undoubtedly still alive but there was a good chance the Totem had been cut down.

"V-Gun." Tennisman said.

The chip reconstituted his arm into Shotgun mode as he once again took aim at the CanDevil. He had already fired when he noticed the candles were in prime position to be struck by the excess shrapnel if it hit. Perhaps if all the candles were destroyed quickly enough, he wouldn`t have to learn about their effects the hard way as he did from the Totems.

Tennisman had taken his time in aiming his attacks as always and it usually cost him precious seconds that could have been better spent dodging. He had enough time to ready a Junk Ball and that would spare him from a single attack, but there was more than one enemy. He braced himself for the worst.

1 - Shotgun CandevilB (50 damage + spread 1)
2 - Ace Serve TotemC, CandevilB (2 x 20 damage)
3 - V-Gun CandevilB (50 damage + spread 2)
4 - Junk Ball (1 hit barrier + 10 drain)
Tennisman destroys one of the CanDevil viruses and the last Totem. He also damages the other two CanDevils with his V-Gun. The damaged CanDevils automatically activate the candles behind them, partially healing them. All of the viruses attack, the first attack bouncing off his barrier and subsequently hit with a vampiric tennis ball. The other attacks hit Tennisman, doing large amounts of damage!

((If the CanDevils can heal for 40, where did the Junk Ball damage go?))

Bracing himself was not enough.

"Tennisman!" Desmond called out.

The full force of the attack had knocked him on his back but he was still alive. He considered himself fortunate that he was still in one piece and that he wasn't standing on a grass panel when he was struck. He laid there for a moment wondering how he could continue.

"TENNISMAN!" Desmond called again. It was an angry voice. Why was he angry?

It wasn't so bad right now. Tennisman was still in pain but that didn't really matter. He didn't have to move or shoot things or save pretty girls. He could just lie here. Maybe if he waited long enough, he could lie here forever.

"GET UP!!" Desmond screamed, "GET UPPP!!!!"

Why was he doing this anyways? Zenny? Chips? Fame? He had forgotten why he fought so hard. Why he endured all of this. To what end was he battling?

"ARGHHHH!!" Desmond growled, "I can't BELIEVE I'm doing this! NETNAVI OVERRIDE CODE: PUSHER ZERO ONE."

Tennisman got up. His movements were rigid and not entirely his own. He knelt and pressed an open palm to the ground. A familiar sensation pulsed down his arm and spread into the ground in front of him. A tennis net appeared in front of him.

Netplay!

He hadn't decided to use it. In fact, he didn't decide to get up. Tennisman was confused and felt like a puppet. He tried to swing his arm. It swung freely as he intended. This was slightly different than losing control.

"TENNISMAN!!" Desmond shouted one more time.

Tennisman blinked and responded, "Yes."

"Frig... I thought you died or something." Desmond said.

"I..." He said, trailing off into nothing.

"Do you KNOW what a pusher is?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman replied in a textbook fashion, "A pusher is a player who does not try to hit winners, but only to return the ball safely..." His voice trailed off again but for a different reason.

"I don't care if you lose." Desmond said, his voice losing its forcefulness, "Just get out safely."

But I care if I lose. I want to win.

Tennisman shook himself loose of the invisible bonds that moved him. He didn't fight for any sort of material gain. He fought to win. Feeling returned to his legs, allowing him to strafe around the viruses. To him, victory was its own purpose. His head felt less numb and his focus returned. Each win for him was another loss for them. His pain subsided. Each loss for them was another life saved.

Desmond sighed, "Welcome back."

"Boomer." He said without breaking his stride.

No oversized boomerang appeared in his hands but the chip data still flowed. It went down his left arm and into his racket. The overlapping strings filled with lines of green until the entire face glowed. The net was still up so a direct attack was out, but Boomer1 wasn't a direct attack. With a well executed forehand swing, the green energy from his racket was literally whipped out in the subsequent follow through. It spun wildly to the edge of the field and circled around back. It picked up speed, slashing through the Dragrin ranks.

"Nice!" Desmond applauded.

"Minibomb." Tennisman called out next.

The round blue explosive appeared and was quickly served at the Dragrins again. The CanDevils could wait until he fully understood their abilities. For now, he would bide his time.

1 - Netplay (1 hit shield + 60 heal)
2 - Boomer1 DragrinA, DragrinB, DragrinC (60 damage)
3 - Minibomb DragrinC (60 damage)
4 - dodge
((Fixed HP values))
Tennisman erects a Tennis net in front of him, effectively protecting himself from enemy attacks with a special energy converting "shield" that can change an enemies attack into restoring energy. Tennisman's newly earned Boomer1 chips works its magic ((one of my favorite chips, btw)) and slices the 3 Dragrins. Tennisman then launched a Minibomb out of his serving cannon and whacks it into the chest of a Dragrin, blowing it to tiny bits. The CanDevils continue to heal up and launch lines of flame towards Tennisman. The fire streaks across the ground and under the net! Tennisman looks like he is in trouble, but he was already on the move, flanking the viruses. Unfortunately for the Dragrins they had already attacked as well, the first spiral of flame hitting the net and being absorbed. As Tennisman continued to flank the viruses, he feels the energy gathered from his net flowing into his body and making him feel more loose, faster, and energized.

"Good, good, keep moving." Desmond cheered, "and use Junk Ball again."

Tennisman agreed that restoring his damaged systems was more important right now and he figured the CanDevils would just shrug off the small damage from a Reflex Volley anyways. With a fair number of the viruses deleted, there was a lot less pressure and a lot more room to breathe.

"Cannon, Minibomb, and Zapring." Tennisman said.

"Back to the basics?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman nodded and raised his gun to the weakest-looking Dragrin. Its once bright red flames had dwindled into a pale orange. One well-placed shot would extinguish them for good. He lined up the Cannon reticle and fired instantly. Next, the Minibomb flashed into existence only to be struck towards the other remaining Dragrin and explode into nothingness. Data came and went in a cycle of creation and destruction.

Metal coils replaced the default cannon setting on his arm, charging a zapring in between. The CanDevils could endure a weak attack like this but would their candles be able to cure them of paralysis? This was a good time to test that question. Tennisman swiped his arm and pitched the electrified halo at the closest virus and took up a return pose with his free hand. The coils disassembled and reformed into his right hand, allowing him to grip the racket with it. A double-handed return would be stronger but still give him the control he needed for a Junk Ball. He wouldn't be able to dodge very well like this but if he was right, he wouldn't need to.

1 - Junk Ball (1-hit barrier + 10 drain) + 10 non-drain damage untapped potential

Tennisman brings up a barrier before blasting one Dragrin with a cannon and blowing up the other with bomb. He finishes his 3 hit combo with a ZapRing, stunning a CanDevil. The other CanDevil attacks, only to have its attack nullified by the barrier and counter attacked with a tennis ball. In the mean time, the stunned CanDevil was healed back to full strength; the other one's candle had already died down before it was thwacked with a tennis ball.

The endgame had finally come. Only two CanDevils were left from the original troupe but Tennisman's options were limited. He still had his Windrackets but using them both was exhausting and he didn't have the strength to pull that off right now.

"I'd send you an Energybomb but those guys don't look like they'd sit still for it to go off." Desmond said.

"Send it." Tennisman said.

"I'm assuming you have some kind of super genius plan that doesn't involve blowing yourself up." Desmond remarked.

Tennisman held out his palm to receive the bomb. The data flowed from his fingertips and converged to form the Energybomb, only to be gripped tightly. The vibrations from the lumpy ball travelled up his arm and to his shoulder. He needed to use it fast.

"Court change." Tennisman said, punching his racket through the floor.

A trail of sand coursed up and under the pair of CanDevils and spiralled outwards. Through cracks and between the panels more and more sand erupted until the localized desert was complete. An outline in the sand whitened into a border around Tennisman and the CanDevils. The soft landscape made it difficult for him to move and he hoped that the viruses would have the same problem. The vibrations from the Energybomb were too much, forcing Tennisman to serve it quickly at one of the viruses.

"It can still heal!" Desmond reminded Tennisman.

"Cannon." Tennisman said.

The chip had already finished materializing before Tennisman had finished his thought. He aimed it at the Energybomb's impact point and fired - the sound of the shot coinciding with the last of the bomb's cascading explosions.

There was one last virus to contend with. Tennisman dredged himself through the sandy terrain to get closer and said, "Wind... Racket."

Each step he made was a pain and he couldn't imagine trying to fight something normally under these conditions. One more virus and he'd be free of it, if only for a while. The chip data took effect, along with a mild tornado that wrapped around him. The tiny gusts made things hard to see but the warmth eminating from the virus told him he was close enough. He grabbed the handle with both hands and pulled it back. This was it.

"WINDRACKET."

Tennis swung the racket diagonally upwards, sending a magnificent burst of wind at the CanDevil. The sand raged against the virus, worsening the destructive nature of the attack twofold. From behind the veil of silt and the CanDevil's frame, Tennisman could still see the flicker of the candle's flame barely hanging on as it suffered the wall of wind that pushed against it.

Burn no more.

Tennisman stood silent as the storm died down revealing the aftermath of his attack.

3 - Cannon CandevilA
4 - Windracket CanDevilC (100 damage) x 2
((I probably won't be able to mod you until late tomorrow. I will be away from the computer all day.))

Tennisman uses his expert throwing and swinging technique to destroy both viruses with relative ease.

"Game set." Tennisman said before falling back onto the small remaining bed of sand behind him. It was warm.

"Ohh.. New chip data." Desmond said.

Tennisman didn't move.

"...There's some zenny too." Desmond continued.

Tennisman rubbed his nose a little and stretched out his arm again. He was content to take a small break as he had promised himself earlier.

"Oh yeah, don't get up. You know, I'll just go get that for you." Desmond added in a sarcastic tone.

The chip data and zenny disappeared from sight, not that Tennisman was looking.

"Heatbody1 and... 150z." reported Desmond.

That was good enough. Tennisman stretched again while he pushed himself off the tiny dune. His hand sank into the soft earth. It was warm inside too. In this tranquil environment, he could focus on himself again and slowly realize how much pain he was still in. He guessed he would have to use Netplay soon to restore himself.

"You sure you're okay?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman nodded and got to his feet. His first few steps were gimpy hobbles but he took a deep breath and quickly resumed walking normally. He really needed that Netplay.

((Battle 5))
((Engaging Mod Lock))

Tennisman continues to walk deeper into the net, scanning the area for additional viruses. He takes a step, and hears a... squish? Tennisman looks down at his feet, and sees his right foot has stepped in some gooey white substance with the consistency of gelatin. He attempts to remove his foot from the blob-like mass but can't seem to pull his foot away. The white goo suddenly hardens around his foot and shoots up like a mouse trap, flinging a tumbling Tennisman into the air. The white mass is joined by similar looking white goo and they form into a larger puddle. The puddle then rises to about half the height of a normal navi, and the faint green glow of a floating orb can be seen through the Unknown Data's skin... stuff.

-<Battle #5! Tennisman vs. THE BLOB! Ready, Serve!>-
"Ungh!" uttered Tennisman while crashing into the ground.

Luckily for him, the area here was completely grassy and the impact wasn't as bad as it could have been. Still the unexpected trap managed to knock the wind out of him. Was it a trap? Tennisman turned around to check out his mystery assailant.

"Yo, you okay?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman nodded and got back up to his feet. Green grass stains covered parts of his outfit but he was otherwise uninjured. The strange mass of gelatin didn't look that threatening but it had managed to catch him off guard.

"Maybe you should run." Desmond suggested.

Tennisman was shocked, "What?"

"That... Thing has 1200 HP!" Desmond said, "That's over 900!"

"What? Over 900?" Tennisman repeated.

"Yeah, I know! You haven't handled anything like this before and you're not even fully healed!" Desmond argued, "ALSO! Also, we have no idea what that is."

Tennisman took up a fighting stance which, coincidentally, was also his neutral tennis playing stance. Racket at the ready, he tapped his free hand to the ground and activated Netplay. The tennis net rose from the grass, separating Tennisman from his opponent. He could still easily see the blob easily through the mesh. The green glow of its core pulsed, taunting him.

"...No chips?" Desmond asked.

"...No." Tennisman replied, shaking his head, "Not yet."

The air was thick with tension but there was no anxiety to start on Tennisman's part. He had enough focus to prepare a Junk Ball knowing full well that he would need every unit of health he could get for this battle. He continued to stare at the blob, waiting for it to make the first move.

"You're serious?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman nodded, his eyes never once breaking away from the white mass.

Let's play.

1 - Netplay (1-hit shield + 60 heal)
2 - Junk Ball (1-hit barrier + 10 drain)
3 - dodge
4 - dodge
Tennisman readies his damage converting net, and prepares for the Unknown Data to make a move. The blob... just sits there. Huh?

Unknown Data: 1200HP

Terrain: 100% Grass

Tennisman.EXE: 120HP [Netplay] (1 Hit barrier + 60HP heal)
Tennisman wasn't ready to give up his sense of readiness just because that blob had the same strategy as he did; if it had a strategy at all.

"I could send you a Minibomb," said Desmond, "You know, serve? Boom?"

"Ace Serve." Tennisman said in reply.

He shot up his four tennis balls and rapidly served them all at the blob. He had started the attack and he had no doubt that it would trigger some kind of counterattack. He could either bulk up his defenses now or continue with his barrage.

"Minibomb." Tennisman said.

He picked up the explosive and tacked it onto his chain of attacks with another powerful serve.

"Again." Tennisman said.

Another Minibomb flashed in his hand and shared the same fate as the bomb before it. It soared over to the enemy, just barely clearing the net he had set up. He felt he
could have dealt another blow but he decided not to go all to forsake his well-being as he had done in the previous battle.

1 - Ace Serve (4 x 20 damage)
2 - Minibomb (60 damage)
3 - Minibomb (60 damage)
4 - dodge
Tennisman serves a volley of 4 tennisballs, hitting the Unknown Data. It retaliates with an energy blast emanating from its glowing core, only to be blocked by the net and heal Tennisman. Tennisman serves a Minibomb towards the Unknown Data and hits, then serves a second directly behind it. The blob swats away the bomb with a hardened appendage and retaliates with a firm punch to Tennisman's chest.

Unknown Data: 1060HP

Terrain: 100% Grass

Tennisman.EXE: 140HP
((That punch impacted through my junk ball barrier? *Heatbody1 isn't listed in the RERN database but it does 110 in the official game))

He saw the arm shoot out from the blob and he had managed to block a direct hit with his racket. However, he didn't expect there to be so much force behind the blow. It pushed against him with the same amount of force that had tossed him across the field like a ragdoll. It easily overpowered him and the Junk Ball shot he had prepared and knocked him on his back again. Whatever this thing was, it was powerful.

"What the hell happened?" Desmond asked, "You totally had that!"

"Boomer and Heatbody." Tennisman snapped. He was angry.

Tennisman charged at the blob with a fierce dash and quickly channeled the green boomer data into his racket. There wasn't that much distance between them so he needed to act fast. Tennisman swung his charged racket at the blob, propelling the green wave outwards. It sliced through the air threatening to bisect the creature where it pooled. Tennisman was close now, more close than he had wanted to get when this began. Four more steps and he would be in range. His foot hit the grass again. Three more steps. The Heatbody chip infused itself in his lithe frame. Two more steps. The air around him ignited. One more step. The grass beneath his foot incinerated into nothing under his weight.

He leapt.

Spinning through the air, Tennisman sprayed the area with an intense fire that spiraled around his body. He should have hit the ground earlier, but his perfected dive technique combined with the explosive burst from the chip kept him afloat a second longer. That single second was more than enough to inflict the damage he intended.

"OHH!!" Desmond cheered.

He broke out of the dive, catching the ground with one hand, flipping over and landing on his feet, albeit in a crouching position. He was on the opposite side of the entity, still within close range. The grass was gone but he didn't intend on ignoring any tactical advantages, especially ones that he could generate himself.

"Court Change." He said, pushing the racket into the ground.

The terrain browned in a wave of decay but he couldn't wait for the effect to finish.

"Windracket!" Tennisman called out.

His racket was still pressed into the panel in front of him. The sand began to form, tossed up by the minute winds generated from the Windracket building up. If he didn't strike now, he might lose his chance or worse yet, get knocked out of his position. He could feel the racket loosening from the ground as the sand gave way to the mesh. The granules poured through easily between the strings as he lifted it with increasing power. The winds stopped.

NOW.

Desmond chimed in, "WINDRACKET!"

Tennisman focused all of his energies into bringing the racket up in an airy uppercut. He could just imagine the impossible heights a tennis ball would travel if he used this much force on a moon lob. The sands were blown away even as they continued to expand from the point of origin. The desert twister exploded upwards and churned for a moment before dissipating into nothing again. The attack ended with the subtle sound of tiny sand grains raining back down from the sky.

Tennisman was out of breath and he despaired knowing that wouldn't be nearly enough to take out his opponent.

You'll definitely will have the chance to use it again this battle. I saw your question on the "everything you need to know" thread, {and I remember the chip from the game} so it will be 110 fire damage until someone says otherwise.))

The blob was hit by the boomerang, provoking a sweeping appendage to rake across Tennisman's body. It also suffered a great deal of damage, since Tennisman's body was on fire! Tennisman changes the area around him into sand, and used the terrain to his advantage by sending a torrent of air and sand hurtling into the Unknown Data. The Unknown Data then retaliates by spraying a mass of needles at Tennisman.

((Netplay is a shield that is weak against break and Junk Ball / Reflex Volley is a barrier that is weak against impact. I'm not sure if that matters but I thought I'd bring that up for possible future reference.))

"There it is!" Desmond remarked, "It's on grass again!"

Without asking for it, Tennisman was given a Heatshot in the spur of the moment. Desmond had read his mind and saved him a few more seconds. He raised his arm and noticed a few needles still embedded in his suit from the unknown data's last attack. They stung but wouldn't keep him from opening fire. A loud bang and puff of smoke gave away his weapon's discharge.

"Get up! Move, move, move!" Desmond barked.

Tennisman tried but the sand around him held him fast. If only the wind had blown away all of the sand, he wouldn't be in this predicament. If he used another Windracket, he'd be freed easily but that would be a waste he couldn't afford right now. However, a better idea came to mind.

"Court Change." Tennisman said.

"Again?" Desmond asked in disbelief.

His racket's face disappeared back under the sand and reversed the desertification he had just caused. The white lines from his previous Court Change still outlined the fringes of his influence. The sand seemed to moisten and darken into an earthen brown. The tiniest blades of grass protruded from from the enriched ground that soon gave birth to a green carpet of new life.

Life and death... Do I really control it that easily?

Tennisman broke out of his trance to find his racket still firmly embedded in the floor. He had forgotten to pull it out and now it was stuck. It wasn't as yielding as the sand before it and wouldn't relinquish his racket.

I guess not.

With a firm twist of his wrist and putting most of his weight behind it, Tennisman freed his racket, along with several large clumps of dirt and grass. He tried to shake it clean but it was a lost cause for now.

"Zapring and Energybomb?" Desmond asked.

Tennisman didn't have any better ideas and that combination usually served him well so why not? He nodded and took aim at the white blob again. There was no bang or puff of smoke this time, but a cackle of electricity and a sharp popping noise. The Zapring shot across the freshly formed grass, straight to its target. His racket was temporarily out of commission until he could clean it better. He grabbed the Energybomb anyways and hurled it at the blob in a simple underhanded toss. It wasn't very satisfying. At least not as satisfying as serving it.

He tapped the racket hard against his foot. A few more clods came loose.
