Rass.exe

Name: Rass.exe (Rapid Assimilation and Synthesis System)
Gender: Male?
Type: Normal
Subtype: Summon
Background: Every major scientific discovery masks the countless failures that were needed to bring it about. Rass.exe demonstrates this principle in a way few would expect - he is a success composed of countless failures. Ever since Lan Hikari demonstrated great potential with the "soulcross" system back in the early days of the network, many organizations have tried to capitalize on the power, with varying degrees of success. The Sharo government was no different, and in the dark confines of a government research facility, several tests were run to splice together several navis - again, with varying degrees of success. One night, a group of rebels broke into the lab network, attempting to cripple the Sharo R&D program. Knowing that it would take far too much time to delete the files, they loaded up the core files from every piece of the network, placed them in the soulcross splicer, and set the device on overload.

...and thus Rass.EXE, the fusion navi, was born.

Appearance:

Rass stands only slightly shorter than your average normalnavi with a slender figure that seems to almost flow and move on its own. His default form features a two-toned body of pink and ebony, a long yellow scarf, and metallic black boots. His silver-visored helmet covers a round, black face with a pair of eyes and little else. Rass' voice is nervous and unsure, slightly higher than normal, and he tends to stutter a lot when talking.

The only other feature of Rass' body that deserves any mention is a trio of gemstones that line his back: a garnet, a sapphire, and a jade. Strangely enough, there is a fourth socket that looks as though it should contain something but doesn't. In reality, each gemstone actually corresponds to one of the fused systems that compose Rass' body. Gun systems are handled by Ishamel (the garnet), a red, one-eyed sniper unit whose systems were a prototype for the new cursor-types in circulation today. Support chips are handled by Tem (the sapphire), a cobalt-blue female system designed for what was supposed to be Sharo's next-generation tactical combat unit. Melee chips are the responsibility of Argo (the jade), a prototype green system whose successors eventually found use in the Sharo military's Einjerhar-class fighters. When Rass uses a chip, a corresponding system takes over the appropriate appendage necessary for its execution. If for example, Rass uses a sword chip, his normally black arm will become green, signifying that Argo's system has possessed the arm, enabling the sword's activation.

Personality: Simply put, Rass is four personalities integrated into a single body. Rass himself is a very submissive, doubtful, and worrisome navi who is constantly bullied by the other three systems. Ironically, despite his dominant position as the "core" unit, he finds himself making very few independent decisions. He tries his best to be confident during battle, but is oftentimes berated by the other systems for being "weak" and "helpless." As administrator of the Rapid Assimilation and Synthesis System, Rass was originally believed to be a cohesive software program, in charge of restoring systems for the body. However, Rass was later revealed to be the core of an overarching cohesive system, capable of generating, shaping, and controlling the versatile fusionist protoplasm.

Ishamel, the targetting unit, is actually the nicest to Rass, as he tends to ignores Rass entirely. With all of the subroutines going toward targetting opponents, there exists little room for personality or wit. Ishamel speaks only when necessary, and when he does, it tends to be in a dead, robot-like tone. "AFFIRMATIVE, COMMENCE FIRING" or "YOU ARE USELESS, CORE UNIT," pretty much sums up Ishamel's entire vocabulary. Lately, Ishamel seems to have taken to trying to be less robotic for one reason or another, quoting pop culture and speculating about finding a "support unit" for his operator.

Tem, the tactical system, is a calculating being at every level. She expresses absolute confidence in her own abilities to assess a situation and achieve her most desired outcome. Therefore, although she feels that she should be the core unit instead of Rass, who she deems incompetent, she is willing to work alongside him to ensure her own survival. Other aspects of her personality are unknown, but Argo swears that she's a horrible gossip when Rass isn't paying attention.

Argo is undoubtedly the meanest system to Rass, and he seems to actively go out of his way to berate the core system. Argo is a chauvinistic, arrogant, and confident individual who believes that anything other than melee fighting is a disgraceful endeavor. The flip side of this antagonistic personality, however, is Argo's honorable nature. He values a fair fight above all else, and will pressure Rass to intervene if he sees something he doesn't like.

Custom Weapon: Rass' body possesses mid-range busters on the palms of the hand.

Half-Charged Shot: Rass charges one or both of his palmbusters with energy directly from his core. Although Rass' fusion core usually works full tilt ensuring that sufficient power is routed to each of the four navi signatures present in his body, he is able to channel the core's considerable resources to create a blast of disintegrating force. When Rass charges his palmbuster units, a white aura surrounds his forearms, and light can be seen emanating from the palms of his hands. The blast erupts forth in a large white globe of energy.

Charged Shot: Similar to the half-charged shot, but wider. The fusion energy no longer collects into a pure white aura, causing the beam and accompanying aura to appear iridescent. The force of the blast tends to knock Rass backwards.

Signature Attacks:

Fusion Restorer

As a result of his observations and studies of the fusionist protoplasm, Suien began to more fully understand why he had mistakenly identified Rass as a recovery-type netnavi. The body of the Rapid Assimilation and Synthesis System is fluid and amorphous, but possesses a surprisingly high degree of stability. By sending a series of electronic impulses across the surface of the fusionist protoplasm, Rass can transform the gelatinous mass into a reconstructive agent that regenerates damaged data and hardens into a tough "second skin" when the repairs are complete. The hardening process occurs independently of the recovery process, which means that the protoplasm can be discharged and used as an adhesive for a different target before it becomes tough and armor-like. Fusion Restorer repairs damage to Rass' systems by 45 HP, and creates a hard shell plating that can absorb attacks. The casing can be discarded and fired before it hardens such that it is applied to a different target, be it object, friend, or foe. This casing can further be used to fuse objects into other objects or navis by acting as a protective sealant.

Rassboard:

Following a near-complete desynchronization of the Rapid Assimilation and Synthesis System, Suien was able to isolate the true nature of the fusionist protoplasm not as an adhesive reagent, but as a constructive one. Unwilling to tackle the issues inherent with adhering navi-germinated programming directly to the fusionist protoplasm, Suien devised an approach that would take advantage of Rass' new designation as an summon-class netNavi. By charging the fusion core beyond its normal capacity, self-contained packets of energy can be manifest and imbued within remote objects — through a similar process previously used by Rass to heal fellow navis. The Independent Thrust-Energy Mechanism, Mark II — "ITEM 2" for short — was the first application of this technique. Using a small portion of his fusion core's system resources, Rass is able to summon a medium-sized personal transportation unit capable of aerial operations... a flying surfboard for a lack of a better term. The sleek pink-and-black oval-shaped transport possesses a trio of thrusters in the back, powered by the spark of fusion core imbued within. Two of the three rockets have a full rotational axis, allowing for a variety of different twists, rolls, and acrobatics. In addition, and perhaps most important to Rass, ITEM 2 operates as a separate independent entity with its own power core — which means that it can be imbued with a subsystem. Upon destruction of ITEM 2, the subsystem returns to Rass' body via an orb of colored light - probably shaken up, but otherwise unharmed.

Supporting Protoplasm (SP)

Element: Normal

Subtype: Summon

Overview:

The fusionist protoplasm is the mysterious substance that comprises Rass’ body. In addition to forming and reconstituting itself to generate objects across the battlefield, it is also one of the only known substances capable of allowing simultaneous processing of multiple electronic impulses. This latter function was primarily utilized by Rass’ subsystems to temporarily take control of portions of the protoplasm and independently execute movement, scanning, and energy transformation subroutines. In essence, the protoplasm operated as though it were a shared “body” for all four systems, with all the benefits and drawbacks it brought. Indeed, while Tem believed that a spare body could be encoded with core data from one of their subsystems, she later discovered that, like the other subsystems, she was bound to the fusionist protoplasm as though it were her own body data.

However, by converting the SP base into raw body data and reintegrating it into the fusionist protoplasm itself through a programming backdoor utilizing the “signature program” interface, Suien was able to dramatically increase the overall volume of the protoplasm. Through this minor feat of ingenuity, Suien Matsumoto was able to give the trapped subsystems something they had all, at some point, desired:

Freedom.

By ejecting a large clump of fusionist protoplasm sufficient to create a humanoid form, Rass can generate a fully autonomous body controlled by one (or more?) of his subsystems. Initially, however, only Tem is able to manifest herself fully within the Supporting Protoplasm. Perhaps with some way of adjusting the body data to suit the capabilities of the remaining subsystems, Argo and Ishamel may have a similar opportunity…?

Appearance:

Technically, the Supporting Protoplasm is a black, humanoid, featureless mass of fusionist protoplasm. However, it may take on the characteristics and appearance of whatever system is designated as the “core” at the time. The Supporting Protoplasm’s default core system is Tem, the bossy female tactical subsystem who traditionally did the thinking for Rass, Argo, and Ishamel. Prior to being fused with the others, Tem was the version 1 prototype for the Sharo-produced Tempo series netNavi, from which TempoMan.EXE was ultimately derived. As such, she possesses a similar look to the small, cobalt-blue shop navi.

Tem stands slightly shorter than Rass, roughly at a 5’5” human equivalent. However, the combination of Tem’s aristocratic poise and Rass’ submissive slouching makes her seem somewhat taller – an illusion exacerbated by the large, blue fins that adorn either side of Tem’s helmet. Tem sports a white bodysuit with a gold trim around her wrists, torso, and thighs. Thin, cobalt blue armor surrounds her chest, pelvic area, hands, and boots, and Tem’s navi insignia, essentially a blue orb with eyes, is emblazoned upon her chestpiece. Tem’s body type is slender, but with undisputedly womanly proportions (much to the surprise of Argo and Rass). Her skin is somewhat pale, but not unhealthily so. Piercing cerulean-blue eyes and a long blonde ponytail complete the ensemble, giving the tactical subsystem a physique that is, at once, athletic and relatively comely.

Personality:

Tem has always been sharp, arrogant, and demanding – qualities that have, if possible, only increased since gaining her own body. On the other hand, Tem seems to have gained a slightly higher measure of respect for Rass, possibly as a result of her time spent as his sole subsystem in the Sharo Experimental Server. Thus, while she hasn’t given up on her goal to eventually become the core system, the newfound freedom seems to have at least temporarily satisfied this desire. Tem also seems to tolerate Suien’s occasionally questionable behavior more, although she still will not hesitate to voice her displeasure at his lapses of judgment. Tem’s defining characteristic, however, continues to be her strategic and manipulative nature. Indeed, thinking several moves ahead and processing a wide range of data to find the optimal solution has always been her forte.

While Tem’s personality hasn’t changed much, the transition from being an “inner voice” to a fully-autonomous entity capable of interacting with the outside world is not an easy adjustment. Used to making snarky remarks and snippy comments about the situation from within the fusionist protoplasm, Tem has discovered firsthand that old habits die hard. As a result, she is still prone to, among other things, giving vicious backhanded compliments and loudly criticizing the “incompetent” actions of virtually anyone she meets.

The largest unforeseen variable in Tem’s calculations is her new physique and its effect on male netNavis. While her first instinct is to simply use this feature another strategic element to be used in the pursuit of her master plans, Tem often finds herself flustered at the attention given to her by others.

Rass, and to a much greater extent, Argo, are also having a difficult time adjusting to Tem’s newfound “assets,” but for very different reasons. Rass has found himself feeling a bit of separation anxiety for his missing tactical subsystem, and has had to adjust to handling his own diagnostic functions which were previously handled by Tem. Argo, meanwhile grapples with the fact that his fellow subsystem, – who he had teased, taunted, belittled, and generally made an ass of himself in front of – is actually an attractive female. This, in turn leads to Argo taking almost an awkwardly overprotective stance toward Tem, acting in many ways like something between a jealous ex-boyfriend and an overzealous older brother.

“Equipped” appearance:

TemSoul - Due to the large amount of time working at internally synchronizing with each other (and perhaps, some vestigial data from the soulcross research that ultimately generated the Fusionist Protoplasm) Rass and the subsystem inhabiting the Supporting Protoplasm can “soul unison.” Characteristic of the early-version soul unisons, the Support Unit is placed into a catatonic state and reintegrates itself into the Fusionist Protoplasm. Its energies are then transferred to Rass, who undergoes a physical transformation.

While in TemSoul, the pink coloring of Rass’ protoplasm retreats into the core, leaving his body jet-black. Over the fusionist protoplasm, however, Rass gains cobalt blue boots and armor that covers his hip, torso, and hands. His normally-pink helmet becomes a matching blue color, with a pair of fins jutting outward and upward from the sides. Despite being called a “soul unison,” however, Rass does not undergo any sort of synergistic transformation or boost in power, given that the Supporting Protoplasm is inextricably bound to Rass’ own body in the first place.

Buster Appearance:

Tem extends her arms, revealing mid-range buster units on the palms of her hands. Though she does not use them often due to the limited generator output of the SP module, she is capable of firing off bursts of blue-and-white energy.
